his demise, describing it as wicked and reminded those behind the story of their own mortality. There were reports early in the week that, Daura, a

nephew and confidant of President Muhammadu Buhari was allegedly flown abroad for urgent medical treatment. But his son, in an exclusive engagement with THISDAY

yesterday, dismissed this, saying the stories were fabricated. In a statement sent to THISDAY, Mohammed said: “Today is the 21st of August,

UNILAG: FG Suspends Babalakin, Ogundipe, Sets up Special Visitation Panel Bennett Oghifo in Lagos and Kuni Tyessi in Abuja The federal government yesterday directed the ProChancellor/Chairman of Council, University of Lagos, Dr. Wale Babalakin and the

sacked Vice Chancellor, Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe to step aside from their official duties pending the outcome of a Special Visitation Panel set up by President Muhammadu Buhari to resolve the crisis rocking the institution.

The President, as visitor to the University also removed Prof. Theophilus Soyombo,

the Acting Vice Chancellor appointed by Babalakin and tasked the panel to come up with workable solutions and peaceful resolutions.

The spokesman of the Federal Ministry of Education, Ben Goong, who made this known in a press statement, said the President also directed that the panel set up yesterday submits its findings and reports within two weeks.

Mali’s elected President, Ibrahim Keita, was overthrown on Tuesday by mutinying soldiers, who took him, and Prime Minister Boubou Cisse, as well as other senior officials into custody. In a related development, the United Nations said yesterday that it had gained access to ousted President Keita while rebel troops said they had released two other detained leaders, in developments that followed mounting international

pressure on the new junta. The coup sent shockwaves around West Africa, sparking fears that one of the region’s most volatile states, and a frontline in the fight against jihadism, could collapse. Diplomatic sources confirmed that the new ECOWAS delegation, led by Jonathan, is expected to arrive in Bamako today (Saturday) with plans “to negotiate the immediate release of Keita and to also ensure the restoration of constitutional government.” Jonathan, who is ECOWAS Special Envoy to Mali, alongside 14 other leaders in the region, will meet with the junta leaders, including Assimi Goita who had declared himself the head.
