NESO: Nigeria Generates Only 15.6% of National Electricity Requirement As NERC updates list of meter providers Emmanuel Addeh in Abuja The Nigeria Electricity System Operator (NESO) has revealed that at its peak, Nigeria’s power sector was only able to
generate about 15.6 per cent of the total projected national daily requirement of 28.880 megawatts. NESO, a semi-autonomous arm under the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) is
responsible for operating the transmission system in a safe and reliable manner. The TCN network spreads to all parts of the country and across the border to several neighbouring countries. Nigeria
is a net exporter of power. A trend analysis of data released by the system operator and compiled by THISDAY, indicated that despite the various financial interventions by the federal government, mostly through the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in the last seven
years, only a paltry average of 4,500MW was actually generated every day. To make matters worse, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), which is fully owned by the federal government, is able to wheel the entire generation to Nigerian
homes, sometimes, due to dilapidated infrastructure. The data released by NESO showed that the country needs approximately 28.880MW, but is barely able to push 5,000MW for use by homes and business concerns in the country. Continued on page 40

PDP Caucus: NCC Misled House on e-Transfer of Results Udora Orizu in Abuja
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Caucus in the House of Representatives has called for criminal investigation and prosecution of officials of the Nigerian Communications

the officials lied under oath while appearing before the House on Friday to explain the possibility of having results of elections transmitted electronically from across Nigeria. Following a stalemated consideration of the report on the
Electoral Act 2010 (Amendment) Bill over the controversial Clause 52(2), Speaker of the House, Femi Gbajabiamila, had called for the suspension of the exercise and summoned the NCC and the Independent National Electoral Commission to appear and guide
the lawmakers on Friday. While INEC did not show up, officials of the NCC led by the Executive Commissioner (Stakeholder Management), Adeleke Adewolu; Executive Commissioner (Technical Services), Ubale Maska, and two others
appeared before the lawmakers. Maska, however, answered all the questions asked by the lawmakers. In the statement titled ‘NCC Lied to Nigerians on Electronic Transmission of Votes and Should Continued on page 40
