Afreximbank Delivers Impressive 2023 Results Amidst Challenging Operating Environment

Nume Ekeghe

The African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), yesterday, released the consolidated financial statements of the Bank and its subsidiaries for

the year ended 31 December 2023. Largely propelled by the Bank's and its subsidiaries' growth, the Group's results for the financial year ended December 31, 2023, demonstrated a strong and resilient

performance, surpassing prior year results and well ahead of expectations.

According to a statement, the Bank remained steadfast in implementing its sixth Strategic Plan and delivering

value to stakeholders, and this resulted in the Group ending the year, once again, achieving a solid performance and attaining an exceptional financial position.

The performance was enhanced

by the Group's ability to successfully execute its four strategic pillars focused on Promoting Intra-African Trade, Facilitating Industrialisation and Export Development, Strengthening Trade Finance

Leadership and Improving Financial Performance and Soundness. The results showed that the Bank’s net interest income reached

Despite the public outcry trailing the recent 230.8 per cent rise in electricity tariff for premium power consumers nationwide, the federal government yesterday, hinted that it plans to extend a similar measure to every Nigerian who has access to on-grid electricity.

The government said it would convert the entire power sector into a single band from the current six, with cost-reflective prices being fully implemented in the next three years.

Speaking during a weekly briefing organised by the Ministry of Information in Abuja, the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, said the recent development was the first step in government’s plan to completely remove subsidy payment.

Also, yesterday, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) sanctioned the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company

FG: Digital Infrastructure Fund to Improve Internet Quality, Affordability Nationwide Coming

Seeks to create a framework to govern, utilise AI

The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, has revealed plans by the federal government to introduce a Digital Infrastructure Fund aimed at enhancing internet quality and affordability nationwide.

Speaking during an interview on Arise News Channel, Tijani also underscored the necessity of prioritising and providing leadership in leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) to accelerate progress in critical sectors.

He also noted that the National

This initiative, set to be launched soon, he noted, underscored the government's commitment to revolutionising digital infrastructure across Nigeria.

Artificial Intelligence Strategy Workshop slated to hold from 15th to 18th of this month in Abuja, would be attended by leading experts from top technology companies such as Meta, Google, Microsoft, and MasterCard, accentuating Nigeria's commitment to shaping the future of AI and technology on the continent.

Speaking on the digital infrastructure plans of the federal

government, he said: “If you look at the things that we've set out in just seven months of my coming into office and about 11 months for our dear President.

“There are certain things that we're doing that people should get excited about. Some of these activities don't become something that you can feel in touch with in two months or three months.

“Today, the President has instructed that we activate but also accelerate the deployment of proper utilisation of technology in government. And in Nigeria, we already have the foundation for it, which is our digital ID under National Identification Number (NIN), we already have a solid payment infrastructure through the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBBS).

“The only thing that we lack to allow us to fully leverage technology is what you call data exchange, which is the ability for different departments and parastatals in government to be able to exchange data. And that's something we're now building with the support of the World Bank. We are very optimistic that that is going to be in place in the next six to eight months.

$1.4 billion at the end of the 2023 financial year, compared to $910.3 million in 2022.

The 58.67 per cent increase was driven by the growth in interest income, which in turn was driven primarily by the growth in the Bank's portfolio of loans and advances.

Net Interest Margin grew to 4.96

per cent compared to the prior year's level of 3.83 per cent.

Due to global inflationary pressures and investment in human capital to support increased business activities, the Group's total operating expenses were $304.5 million, which was 34.93 per cent higher than 2022.

The capacity expansion and rise in

expenditures were envisaged in the five-year Sixth Strategic Plan, which is currently under implementation until December 2026.

The Group's total assets grew by 20.12 per cent to $33.5 billion (FY2022: $27.9 billion), largely on account of increases in net loans and advances to customers and cash

and cash equivalents. The Group shareholders' funds, which largely mirrored the Bank's shareholders' funds, recorded a solid growth of 17.55 per cent to reach $6.1 billion as of December 31, 2023, compared to the FY'2022 position of $5.2 billion.

Accounting for this growth were the $546.8 million retained income (which is net of appropriated 2022 dividends) and the $349.8 million fresh equity raised during the year as shareholders supported the GCI II programme, which aimed to raise $2.6 billion paid-in-capital (US$3.9 billion callable capital) by 2026.

TARIFF HIKE: FG HINTS OF PLAN TO MOVE ALL ELECTRICITY CONSUMERS TO BAND ‘A’ IN THREE YEARS

(AEDC) for violating its order on customer classifications.

However, the Northern Elders Forum (NEF); former Vice President and the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 election, Atiku Abubakar, and President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, have faulted the recent increase in electricity tariff by the present government led by President Bola Tinubu.

In a separate document seen by THISDAY, the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), stressed that with the increase in tariffs for Band A customers from N68 to N225, it has succeeded in saving about N1.4 trillion from what it stated was the projected N3.2 trillion subsidy for 2024.

At the current price of N225, it argued that premium customers would be paying less than half of what they would otherwise spend if they deployed other alternatives like diesel-powered generators.

But Adelabu maintained that it no longer makes sense for the government to continue paying close to 70 per cent of electricity subsidy for Nigerians, explaining that to ensure the current economic downturn does not harshly impact the lower wrung of the society, government would embark on the gradual phase-out of underpayments for bands B-E and then lifeline.

Adelabu, said the federal government had spent about N2.9 trillion on electricity subsidy.

He said the government was still subsidising 85 per cent of electricity supply in the country despite increase in tariff for Band A customers.

He said the government remains pro-poor in its power policy because it is subsidising nothing less than 67 per cent of the cost of producing, transmitting, and distributing electricity in Nigeria.

He said the government is not ready to aggravate the sufferings by refusing to adopt 100 per cent withdrawal of subsidy on electricity

“This tariff review is in conformity with our policy thrust of maintaining a subsidised pricing regime in the short-run or the short-term with a transition plan to achieve a full cost reflective tariff for over a period of, let us say three years.

“It is because of government sensitivity to the pains of our people that will not make us migrate fully into a cost-reflective tariff or to remove subsidy 100 per cent in the power sector like it was done in oil and gas sector.

“We are not ready to aggravate the sufferings any longer which is why we said it must be a journey rather than a destination and the journey starts from now on, that we should do a gradual migration from the subsidy regime to a full cost-reflective regime and we must start with some customers.

“This is more like a pilot (scheme) for us at the Ministry of Power and our agencies. It is like a proof of concept that those that have the infrastructure sufficient enough to deliver stable power, those enjoying 20 hours of light should be the ones to get tariff added,” he pointed out. Adelabu, argued that anybody that goes into any business intends to first recover cost, then if possible, make some profit, explaining that the moment a business cannot cover costs, the sustainability of such business is doubtful and will be run aground. He observed that if the federal government was to pay the about N3 trillion subsidy for this year, it would be more than 10 per cent of the national budget for 2024.

“The power sector is just a single sector out of so many sectors that government has to attend to. We have works, we have housing, we have education, we have health, we have defence and so on that are all competing for this meagre revenue from the government.

“So it will be very insensitive on our part to force or compel government to continue to subsidise at that rate of almost N3 trillion for

the power sector alone. We just have to be realistic and considerate. We also must ensure that the regulators are independent and there is consequence management,” he stressed.

With a little above 12 million registered electricity customers nationwide, Adelabu said the recent increase would only affect about 1.5 million customers.

The remaining 10.5 million customers, he said, would continue to enjoy government subsidy at about almost 70 per cent, until it is gradually phased out.

He emphasised that if the Discos are able to comply with the service level agreement, which is 20 hours for Band 'A’ at the minimum, it is still far cheaper than the alternative source of diesel and petrol generators.

“You will agree with me that the average cost of generating a kilowatt hour of power today, using diesel and petrol generator is not less than N450 to N500 because of the capital investment of purchasing the generator, the daily operational fuelling of the generator and the intermittent servicing of these generators.

“The cost is not less than N500. So, if we are putting the tariff at N225, I believe it is more than 50 per cent cheaper than running alternative power sources,” Adelabu maintained.

He stressed that for the first time in many years, government was taking a bold step to address the fundamental issues confronting the power sector, including liquidity and pricing challenges.

The minister emphasised that the sector had been deprived of the required liquidity to keep it running on a sustainable level and is therefore no longer attractive to investors.

“Even the operators don't have enough liquidity to invest in enhancement of their infrastructure. The generator companies cannot pay the gas companies, which is the raw material that they use to generate power. The generator companies cannot service their equipment.

“It got to a level that they cannot

have told reporters.

“In terms of our operations this is a routine earthquake … Immediately we knew this would be of high interest and important to people who don’t feel earthquakes a lot.”

People reported feeling the shaking as far north as Maine and as far south as Norfolk, Virginia, following the quake, according to USGS.

Scientists said those in the affected area should listen to local emergency officials and be prepared to seek cover if aftershocks occur.

“If you feel shaking, drop, cover and hold,” Earle said.

No major disruptions or damage was reported in New Jersey or New York.

"We have activated our State Emergency Operations Center. Please

do not call 911 unless you have an actual emergency," said New Jersey Governor, Phil Murphy.

President Joe Biden spoke with Murphy about the earthquake, saying White House was monitoring the situation.

“He thinks everything's under control,” Biden told reporters before leaving the White House for a trip to Baltimore. “He’s not too concerned about it, the governor of New Jersey, so things are all right.”

New York Governor Kathy Hochul, said the quake was felt throughout New York, and officials were assessing impacts and any potential damage.

In Yonkers, New York, Mayor Mike Spano, said City Hall shook

but no injuries were reported.

"A few moments ago our entire house shook for about 25 seconds or so here in Mendham, NJ," former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said. USGS is still investigating the exact fault line at the center of Friday’s quake, and said it occurred in a region with dozens of fault lines that were more active millions of years ago.

Sara McBride, a scientist with the USGS Earthquake Hazards Program, said the agency has recorded at least two aftershocks related in the first few hours after the quake struck. The agency continues to refine its aftershock forecast for this event.

“There’s a three per cent chance of magnitude five or greater in the next week related to this earthquake,”

even pay the salaries of their workers because of the accumulated debt in the sector due to lack of liquidity and commercial pricing.

“And I believe that previous administrations have shied away from addressing this. It is a tough conversation, but we must have it at a point if we are serious about stable power sector in this country,” he added.

He assured that it might be painful in the short run, but the gains will come very soon and will be permanent.

At the moment, he stated that all Nigeria’s gas pipelines are bad as a result of vandalism, leading to a lack of adequate pressure in the gas pipes.

NERC Fines Abuja Disco N200m for Failing to Comply with Prescribed Customer Band Classifications

The NERC yesterday sanctioned the AEDC for violating its order on customer classifications. This is coming on the back of the recent announcement by the power sector regulator of an increase of over 230 per cent for customers in Band 'A', that supposedly enjoy 20 hours and above electricity supply daily.

In a statement released in Abuja, NERC also directed AEDC to immediately begin the refund of customers that were unjustifiably moved to Band 'A', stressing that the process of reimbursement must be completed by April 11.

"NERC has taken enforcement action against the Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc for noncompliance with the Supplementary Order to the April 2024 Multi-Year Tariff Order (MYTO) 2024 for AEDC.

"AEDC has been fined N200,000,000 for failure to comply with the prescribed customer band classifications for the tariff billing," the commission said.

It added that the decision followed a detailed review and customer

McBride said during a news briefing. USGS scientists also said informal observations can be a big help in understanding earthquakes, especially in a region where they’re less common.

“We encourage people to fill out the ‘Did You Feel It?’ reports on our website,” McBride said. “This citizen science project is critical in terms of building our knowledge around earthquakes.”

By mid-afternoon on Friday, the agency said it had received more than 161,000 reports, and extrapolated that the quake had been felt by millions of people. McBride acknowledged that earthquakes can be nerve-wracking for people who don’t live in seismologically active regions,

feedback, which revealed that AEDC had applied the new tariff to all customer bands, contrary to the order, which was designed to ensure fair billing practices.

Many customers of the Disco had since the increase of premium power consumers' tariffs from N68 to N225, complained of many infractions, including that those previously in Band 'B' were moved to the higher Band 'A' without any form of explanation.

Also, some complained that even in the same compound, different flats were having different classifications, an anomaly, while others said that they were being made to vend for N225 (Band 'A') when they rarely have power for half of the approved hours of supply.

But the AEDC on Thursday had acknowledged the discrepancies and distortions in billing, blaming 'system glitches'.

"This was due to a system glitch caused by the reclassification of some Band 'A' customers who have now been downgraded to Band 'B' due to the number of hours of electricity supply enjoyed over the past few weeks. These erstwhile Band A customers who vended were charged the new tariff of N225 per kilowatt hour.

"Our team is working to identify the customers affected and all excess charges will be refunded. The situation also saw some Band A customers who are now charged N225 vend at the old rate. Once the glitch is resolved, this category of customers will now recharge their meters at the new rate of N225, which will ensure they enjoy a minimum supply of 20 hours daily," the power distribution firm stated.

But not convinced, the industry regulator in the statement, came down hard on AEDC, ordering it to show evidence of compliance to the new directives latest April 12.

and said knowledge is power in combatting that discomfort.

“The best thing you can do to relieve any unsettling feelings you might have is to learn how to protect yourself during shaking and how to prepare for earthquakes in the future,” she said. USGS officials also said that even smaller-magnitude quakes are more likely to be felt more widely on the East Coast than similar size quakes on the West Coast due to the rock properties of eastern soil.

"The surgeon sort of froze and all of us kind of seemed a bit confused," Justin Allen told USA TODAY. "Even when the surgeon said 'that’s gotta be an earthquake,' I thought he was joking."

Vice President, Mr. Denys Denya, said: "During the 2023 financial year, the Afreximbank Group exceeded the budget and significantly surpassed its 2022 performance. This outcome was mainly driven by the Bank's and its subsidiaries’ achievements. Our focus is steadfast on fueling industrial growth, boosting trade within Africa, and promoting exports with added value, which are crucial for the continent's prosperity.

“We will continue to maintain a cautious balance between profitability, liquidity, and safety to ensure a decent net interest margin and deliver profitable and sustainable growth and quality assets. We are delighted to report results well above forecasts for the financial year ended 31 December 2023, and look forward to delivering stronger financial outcomes in 2024."

In 2023, the Bank was ranked number one in all three categories in the Bloomberg Capital Markets League Tables Report for African Capital Markets – number one Mandated Lead Arranger, Bookrunner and Administrative Agent for Sub-Saharan Borrower Loans. This is a testament to the Bank's leadership role in facilitating capital from within and outside the continent.

Additionally, its subsidiary, the Fund for Export Development in Africa (FEDA), received multilateral support from Zimbabwe, Kenya, Congo, Chad, Gabon, Sierra Leone, and São Tomé and Príncipe, who officially signed the FEDA Establishment Agreement. This collective support is pivotal in the Bank's mission to provide lasting financial support to African economies.

The Bank also celebrated a key milestone — its 30th anniversary, marking three decades of financing and supporting trade in Africa and highlighting the need for Africa to enhance intra-African trade and integration amidst the challenges stemming from the global shocks caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the adverse economic ramifications of the Ukraine crisis, and other global conflicts.

“Moreover, the Bank inaugurated its Afreximbank Caribbean Office, a pivotal step in supporting the implementation of the Partnership Agreement between Afreximbank and the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) member states. This expansion solidifies Afreximbank's commitment to promote and develop trade between Africa and the Caribbean, aligning with its Diaspora Strategy and the African Union's designation of the African Diaspora as Africa's sixth region.

“Despite Africa's economic challenges and constraints, Afreximbank's management and team demonstrated a focus on supporting member countries by offering customised programmes and facilities designed to address the continent's distinctive needs.

“These efforts and interventions assisted member countries in meeting trade finance commitments, assessing crucial imports, boosting food security and commodity production, alleviating supply chain bottlenecks, and adjusting to challenges arising from climate change,” it added.

Minister, Nyesom Wike, yesterday, said the Abuja Light Rail Scheme would be inaugurated next month after attaining 97 per cent completion. He gave the assurance during an inspection tour of the renovation and rehabilitation works on the network from Metro Station to Airport Train Station.

He expressed satisfaction with the rehabilitation exercise, describing the metro line as very important to developing the FCT's economy.

“We are almost 97 percent. All the works are going on to make sure that May is a reality. I want to say that as of yesterday (Thursday), Mr. President has approved the schedule for the commissioning of projects for his one year in office.

“This is a very important project. Those of us who rode on the metro line, you will see that it’s more convenient to use the metro line than even the vehicles to go to the airport.

“So, I’m really impressed with the contractor, CCECC. They have assured us that all the renovation works will be ready before the commissioning date.

“I believe this will be the first project that Mr. President will like to inaugurate because it is very key to the development of the economy, particularly as the FCT is concerned,” Wike said.

He described the progress of work on Abuja Light Rail as “dream come true” while expressing happiness that after all said and done, the metro line will be in use for Nigerians come May 2024.

Edo Impeachment: Panel Ends Sitting as Shaibu Remains Absent

Adibe Emenyonu in Benin

The panel set up by the Chief Judge (CJ) of Edo State, Justice Daniel Okungbowa, to investigate the allegation of perjury and leaking of government secrets levelled against the deputy governor of the state, Mr. Philip Shaibu, yesterday rounded off its sitting.

The sitting was part of the impeachment processes initiated against the deputy governor by the Edo State House of Assembly.

The seven-man panel headed by Justice Stephen A. Omonuwa (rtd), had on Thursday, ruled that it would adjourn for the last time yesterday to give ample opportunity for the respondent, Shaibu, to defend the allegations levelled against him before the panel.

The Thursday's ruling by the panel was sequel to the absence of Shaibu and his counsel when the panel sat on Thursday.

Shaibu, who was represented by Professor Oladoyin Awoyale (SAN), at the Wednesday inaugural sitting of the panel, had told the seven-man panel that he would not continue with the panel's proceedings on the ground that an Abuja High Court had asked that all the parties before it in a case of enforcement of fundamental human rights instituted by him to come on Monday, April 8, 2024, to show cause on why it should grant or not not grant the the reliefs sought.

When the panel overruled the objection, Awoyale, sought the permission of the panel to excuse himself.

He said though the cost was quite expensive, it was also important to ensure that there is a balance between saving cost and safeguarding the interest of the FCT.

slain officers and soldiers in Abuja.

While saying that a transparent investigation should be conducted to fish out the real culprits of the heinous crime, he said innocent citizens should not be made to suffer any further.

“I am very happy for this meeting taking place here today in Warri. Most people who spoke about the issue did so out of ignorance because they lacked the true knowledge of the facts of what happened. Setting up this Board of Enquiry is a good one.

“In my MORE Agenda, we said we are going to ensure peace and security, and for the first time in a long while, we celebrated Christmas without any hitches and I must thank security agencies in the state for a job well done.

“In Delta State, there are two bodies we don’t play with; the Advisory and Peace Building Council

and the Peace Building and Conflict Resolution- because they are doing a lot to ensure enduring peace in the state.

“I told the Secretary to State Government to invite the Okuama/ Okoloba people. So, l made it mandatory that the Chairmen of Ughelli South and Bomadi Local Government Councils to be in attendance, the members of the State House of Assembly who are representing the constituencies should also be in attendance and the Presidents-General of the communities should be in attendance.

“That meeting was held on the 7th of February and they signed a peace accord. So, we were not expecting anything negative when the military went there for a peace mission.

“In Delta State, we don’t encourage crises. So, we want to assure you that which ever information you people want, we will give it to you and we

will also come with our position paper to submit to you people before you leave.

“That will also guide you on the role that we have played as a state because if we don’t come with this position paper, you will not know the role that the state has played,” the governor said.

Chairman of the Board of Enquiry, Air Vice Marshal David Ajayi, had said the Board was in the state to investigate the unfortunate incident that happened at Okuama.

“We are here as a fact- finding mission and not to apportion blame. We are here to gather facts from security agencies, community leaders and community dwellers.

“This report will also help to ensure healthy communication that will enhance civil-military relations and ensure that economic activities thrive again in the affected communities,” Ajayi said.

FG Backs Mining Firms Implementing Local Content

Folalumi Alaran in Abuja

The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr. Dele Alake, has expressed the commitment of the federal government to support mining companies that place premium on local content in their operations.

Speaking during a site tour of the Segilola Resources Operating Limited (SROL), an indigenous gold mining company in Ilesha, Osun State, the minister lauded the extensive work that has gone into the facility, expressing delight that over 95 per cent of its staff are Nigerians, urging other operators to take a cue from them.

He advised mining companies to emulate the international best practices of the Segilola gold project to develop the sector.

Commending the high Nigerian component of the project, Alake remarked that the firm has applied local content in its procurement and employment policies.

The minister praised the company's tenacity of purpose and efficient methods deployed to push through with its vision, despite daunting challenges at inception.

Stressing that his focus has been to redirect local and international

attention to the mining sector, Alake revealed that the implementation of his 7-point agenda is to reposition the mining sector. "I have made sanitising the security of mining environment one of the critical points of my 7-point agenda. Recently, as part of the process of actualising that policy, I had to unveil the creation of a mines marshal. They have a

base in all the states of the country.

Emphasising the imperative of harmonious relationship with host communities, Alake lauded SROL for overshooting its community development targets, urging mining companies across the country to follow suit to ensure safer, unfettered operating environment which will culminate in maximum beneficiation for both operators, the

host communities and government.

In his remarks, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Segilola Resources, Segun Lawson stated that the company is a world-class project powered by Nigerians, appealing for support from the federal government to enable it to scale up, and contribute better to the economy of the country.

Falana Slams Governors Clamouring for State Police

Chuks Okocha in Abuja

Renowned human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, has slammed state governors demanding State Police but cannot pay the minimum wage of N30,000 to workers.

Falana, spoke while at the maiden edition of the Yinka Odumakin Interfaculty Debate and Public Lecture held by the Student Union of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State.

The human rights lawyer warned the President Bola Tinubu-led Nigerian government not to allow state governments that are currently struggling to pay N30,000 minimum wage to their workers to create state police.

Falana, argued that the creation of

state police is not the lasting solution to the security problems in Nigeria.

The lawyer added that the “governments should acquire the vital security equipment to track kidnappers, terrorists and the so-called unknown gunmen. Nigerians should not be deceived into believing that the establishment of state police is the panacea to insecurity in the country.

"A state police that is not well equipped and adequately funded can never confront and contain insecurity.

State governments that cannot pay the national minimum wage of N30,000 per month should discard the idea of setting up state police.

“We must also realise that a wellequipped and well-funded police service cannot address the crisis of insecurity if mass unemployment of youths is not addressed.”

Falana equally berated the lack of political willingness of state governments in the country to improve basic education.

According to the human rights activist, “I was a member of the Alliance of Progressive Students (ALPS), a student socialist group. Yinka was also a member of the ALPS. I was the Public Relations Officer of the student union during the 1979/80 academic session.

“We must avoid a situation whereby members of a state police service are owed salaries and allowances for several months. Therefore, the salaries and allowances of all security officials should be deducted from source and paid to them directly.”

Don't Panic, Says NNPC as Fuel Queues Resurface in Lagos

Marketers demand sustained product supply from national oil company

as the sole importer to get products.

The marketers also expressed hope that the situation would soon be over as the supplier makes more products available to them.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) yesterday said it had fixed the glitch in petrol supply in the past few days in Lagos.

This was just as ensuing shortfall in petrol available at petroleum depots and filling stations generated human and vehicular queues at many retail outlets in Lagos and adjoining cities as residents struggle to buy the product.

A statement by the NNPC spokesman, Olufemi Soneye, explained that the problem emanated from one of the depots around the city.

It cautioned motorists against panic buying of the product so as not to exacerbate the supply challenge, assuring that effective today, the situation would be normalised.

"The NNPC Limited wishes to inform the general public that the tightness in Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) supply witnessed in some filling stations in Lagos was as a result of an issue in one of the depots in the area.

"The NNPC Retail Limited, our retail arm, has since resolved the issue and effective tomorrow, normalcy in supply shall be restored within the affected area.

"The NNPC Limited calls on motorists in Lagos to avoid panic buying of PMS as all hands are on deck to sustain sufficiency in the supply of petroleum products in the area," the statement added.

Meanwhile, petroleum marketers yesterday, blamed the development on the inability of the NNPC to supply the required volume of petrol to them since they all depend on the company

THISDAY gathered that several petrol stations, even those owned by the NNPCL, and the major marketers were in short supply and were either not dispensing or recorded long queues.

For instance, at the MRS filling station at Alaka, in Surulere, Lagos, there was long queue of motorists trying to buy fuel with no success. It was same thing at all the filling stations at Awolowo road, Ikoyi and other areas in Lagos.

It was speculated that the cause of the product shortage was due to the NNPCL's inability to pay its subsidy backlog to oil traders since November and December last year.

Although some marketers said the supply hiccup had nothing to do with the said subsidy backlog, they however, said the subsidy regime was

A marketer whose company is a member of the Major Energies Marketers Association of Nigeria (MEMAN) formerly MOMAN, told THISDAY that they were waiting for more supply from NNPC, which is the

only petrol supplier in the country. He said they had limited product in stock which led to the panic buying and queues at the filling stations.

He said he had no clue as to why there was shortage in supply, saying he was only reading in the news that it had something to do with subsidy backlog.

"I really don't know what the problem is. What I know is that we

have not seen normal supply that we need. I don't know the cause of their inability to send us enough product.

I only read in the paper that subsidy backlog is what is causing the supply constraint", the marketer stated.

He, however, confirmed that NNPC had given his company some volumes yesterday, which will keep them busy loading throughout this weekend.

Nine Months After, Obazee Concludes Investigation into CBN,

Related Entities

The President thanked Obazee for answering the call of duty while wishing him success in his future endeavours.

Two days after signing the Student Loan Amendment Bill into law, President Bola Tinubu yesterday approved the appointment of three qualified Nigerians to serve on the management team of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND). According to a statement issued by presidential spokesperson, Ajuri Ngelale, the new appointments was in line with President Tinubu's determination to secure Nigeria's socio-economic future by ensuring sustainable higher education and critical skills development for all Nigerian students and the youth. NELFUND's new management team include Mr. Akintunde Sawyerr, Managing Director/CEO; Mr. Frederick Oluwafemi Akinfala, Executive Director, Finance and Administration abd Mr. Mustapha Iyal, Executive Director, Operations. With the appointment of the management team, the President expects that the necessary apparatuses are expeditiously put in place for the effective take-off of this pivotal Fund for the immediate and lasting benefit of Nigerian students and families in all parts of the country.

The Jim Obazee-led team set up nine months ago by President Bola Tinubu to investigate the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and other related entities has concluded its assignment and turned in its report to President Bola Tinubu.

Tinubu had on Wednesday signed the Student Loans (Access to Higher Education) (Repeal and Re-enactment) Bill 2024 into law, expressing his determination to give education the proper attention.

Alleged Unlawful Sack: Former Chief Risk Officer, Adekanye Sues NIBSS, Demands N1.4bn Compensation

Alex Enumah in Abuja

A former Chief Risk Officer of the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS), Mr. Temidayo

Adekanye has dragged NIBSS before the National Industrial Court in Lagos, over his alleged unlawful removal from office.

Adekanye, in the legal action filed on March 21, by his lawyer, Mr. Wahab Shittu, SAN, is asking the court to void his sack from office, on the grounds of victimisation,

adding that the management was misled in taking the decision.

While on one hand seeking his reinstatement to his former position, the claimant on the other, is asking the court to order the NIBSS, which is the sole defendant in the suit to pay him a whopping sum of N1 billion “for wrongful termination of employment and for breach of contract of employment.”

Adekanye who was relieved of his appointment in January this year said he joined the company as the

Chief Risk and Compliance Officer on January 15, 2021; a position he had effectively held until his alleged unlawful sack.

According to him, throughout the period of his employment, he served the NIBSS “diligently and was never involved in any disciplinary misconduct of any kind.”

He observed that trouble however started when he had cause to report certain governance and transparency issues to the Board Audit and Risk Committee.

This was just as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) would on Monday, arraign a former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, at the Lagos State High Court, Ikeja for alleged abuse of office over allocation of billions of United States dollars.

Tinubu, according to a statement issued yesterday by his Media Adviser, Ajuri Ngelale, lauded Obazee for the dedication and professionalism he exercised in handling the complexities of this critical national assignment.

With the conclusion of the assignment and submission of a final comprehensive report, and with the winding up of all apparatuses used during the scope of the task which terminated on March 31, 2024, the investigation has formally closed, with all appropriate law enforcement and regulatory agencies already conducting follow-up action.

However, the President appreciated the former Chief Executive Officer of the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRC), Obazee, for his services as the Special Investigator of the CBN and other related entities.

Tinubu had last July appointed Obazee, as Special Investigator of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and other related entities.

In a letter addressed to Obazee dated July 28, 2023 and personally signed by him, the President had explained that the appointment of Obazee was in line with his administration's commitment to fight corruption and in accordance with provisions of Section 15 (5) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

Meanwhile, the EFCC would on Monday, arraign Emefiele at the Lagos State High Court, Ikeja.

Kaduna Debts: PDP Urges Sani to Probe El-Rufai’s Administration

The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kaduna State, has called on Governor Uba Sani to set up a Judicial Commission of Inquiry to investigate the huge debts and contractual liabilities left by the administration of Nasir el-Rufai. Sani had at a Town Hall meeting with stakeholders in Kaduna on March 30, 2024, opened up on the huge debts left behind by his predecessor, saying

that he will not be able to pay salaries without borrowing.

In a statement issued yesterday in Kaduna, Abraham Catoh, spokesperson person of the party in the state, said the PDP was not suprise with Sani's revelations at the Town Hall meeting. The statement maintained that the governor's revelation is a scratch on the surface on the real issues and urged him to go full fledged in his show of transparency.

"Though it did not come to us as a surprise, we believed that this revelation is just a scratch on the surface on the real issues, therein; we encourage him to go full fledged in this show of transparency.

"We, as opposition party, are in full support of any plan by the government that would bring development to our dear state, bearing in mind that we shall always kick against anything short of that," the PDP said.

Hope of Getting Fair Trial Zero, Kanu's Lawyers Cry Out

Alex Enumah in Abuja

Lawyers for the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, have cried out that there is no way that their client can get a fair trial, owing to Kanu's continued detention by the Department of the State Services (DSS).

The lawyers lamented that it is difficult for Kanu to effectively defend himself against the alleged treasonable felony and terrorism charge when he can hardly access his lawyers or have any discussion without interference by operatives of the security agency.

Kanu has been in custody of the DSS since 2021, when he was arrested in Kenya and forcefully brought back to Nigeria to continue his trial. He was first arrested in 2015, in Lagos, shortly after he entered the country on a visit and was later

arraigned in 2016, alongside four others on offences bordering on treason.

However, trial judge, Justice Binta Nyako, of the Federal High Court, Abuja, in 2017, admitted him to bail in the sum of N100 million and three sureties in like sum, on health grounds to enable him prepare adequately for his trial.

The bail was however revoked in 2019 and a warrant of arrest issued against him, for jumping bail in late 2019 and abandoning his trial.

But Kanu has maintained that he did not jump bail but fled for his life after soldiers attacked his family's home in Abia State, killing several persons in the process.

Although Justice Nyako had at the resumed trial struck out eight of the 15 amended charges filed against him by the federal government, she however refused to admit Kanu to another bail.

Endangering the Lives of OAU Students

It is disturbing that the federal government is endangering the lives of students and staff of Obafemi Awolowo University.

For some weeks now, the media space has been awash with the issue of unregulated mining in OAU, but the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals has turned a deaf ear to it despite the fact that it is life-threatening.

Just last Monday, it was reported that a group of Ife indigenes invaded the University land with a bulldozer beside Poplat Fuelling station. According to them, they have been mandated by Ife community to build a fence to demarcate Ife land from that of the university. Meanwhile, this land has a-three block students’ hostel in it. The hostility of some unscrupulous elements in Ife community has not permitted the university to utilize it since 2018. Now, they want to go ahead to erect a wall around a hostel which was built with taxpayers’ money with a claim that it is their land. The said land also has the university sawmill which has been there since 1972.

For context, the hostel was constructed to house both boys and girls through TETFUND intervention. Unfortunately, when it was to be opened for allocation to students, there was threat of fire and brimstone by some elements in Ife community which forced the university management to halt the exercise. In fact, the then Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ogunbodede and his convoy was attacked right on the land by hoodlums.

All indices suggest that the university is under the mercy of some elements in Ife. But the federal government must understand that if this issue is not tamed right now, a serious violence will soon ensue between the Ife community and the University.

In fact, I was expecting that the university management would have issued a statement as regards this latest issue of encroachment but it seems the management does not want

to offend some elements in Ife.

Encroaching on a land that has been allocated the university by the federal government suggests that these people do not bother about town-gown relationship. The hostility is not healthy for teaching, learning and research. The federal government must act swiftly.

President Tinubu must come to the aid of students and lectures of OAU. I am particular about this because I am aware of the dangers and brutality associated with unregulated mining and encroachment on a university land. The university management must also stand its ground and stop being an onlooker.

Kudos, Ya’u Idris

Ihe reappointment of Dr Yau Usman Idris as the director of Nigeria Nuclear Regulatory Authority for the second term by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu did not come to us as a surprise. Since his appointment by the immediate past administration of Muhammadu Buhari in 2019, Dr Idris, has been transforming the agency to the best of his ability. His first tenure in the agency witnessed various innovative policies and strategies geared towards accelerating nuclear programs that will keep the country at same pace with its contemporaries. Idris efforts led the agency to secure €1milion grant from the European Union (EU) for the implementation of an international nuclear safety cooperation project for the safe management of radioactive waste in Nigeria. Nigeria has been granted a significant opportunity.

This opportunity arose after the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed that Nigeria has established a robust system for nuclear safety and security.

Yau Idris, an experienced nuclear regulator and radiation protection expert, is a pioneer staff of NNRA. He joined the agency in 2004 as chief regulatory officer and rose to the rank of director. He has a PhD in Applied Nuclear Physics from the Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, M.Sc. Physics from the University of Ibadan and B.Sc. Physics from the University of Maiduguri. Before he joined NNRA, he served as commissioner for environment and natural resources, Kaduna State. He was lecturer/researcher in physics in Ahmadu Bello University and University of Maiduguri for 15 years. Currently, Dr Idris is chairman, African Commission on Nuclear Energy (AFCONE), Bureau of Conference of States Parties, acting chairman, Forum of Nuclear Regulatory Bodies in Africa (FNRBA), having served as vice chairman and secretary of the Forum. He is advisory board member, Africa Nuclear Business Platform (AFNBP) and board chairman, Nigerian Association of Medical Physicists (NAMP).

Bombs Hurt

Wminor article about yet another unexploded WW2 bomb being detonated on Britian’s Jersey’s coast is a great source of worry.

The second world war finished nearly 80 years ago and yet bombs are still being found, and the Vietnam war finished about 50 years ago but it is estimated there are still three million unexploded landlines left behind.

What is the future of Ukraine and Gaza when, and if, there is peace? There must be peace as soon as possible and please no more wars, they aren’t necessary if we are sane and lead by sane leaders but that might be difficult to achieve.

Corruption Allegation: Stop Using Diversionary Tactics to Cover Your Failures,

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, has called on the Governor of Kano State, Abba Yusuf, to stop using diversionary tactics to cover up for his alleged failure to deliver to the people of the state. His reaction may not be unconnected to the decision of the Kano State government to file criminal charges against him over alleged bribery of $413,000, and N1.38 billion.

Ganduje, in a statement issued yesterday, by his Chief Press Secretary, Edwin Olofu, described the latest antics of the governor as unfortunate. He added that it was also a sorry attempt to shift public glare from the fact that there was really nothing on the ground in the state to justify the sharp increase in statutory allocations to the state since the inception of the President Bola Tinubu-led administration in May 29, 2023. The chairman added that the latest attempt by the state to drag his name in the mud would fail, adding that it spoke volumes of the level of crass ignorance and disregard

for the rule of law by the Governor Abba Yusuf-led administration.

Ganduje, who governed the state between 2015 to 2023, also described the decision by the administration to set up two committees to probe him over alleged misappropriation of public property, political violence and missing persons in the state as a welcome development.

He, however, observed that it would have been in the best interest of the state to extend the dateline of the probe to flag off from 1999 to date.

Ganduje noted: "In their desperate attempt to malign me and my family,

Ganduje Tells Yusuf

they either forgot or probably cannot conduct themselves by the dictates of the law.

"They failed to take judicial notice of the recent pronouncement of the Federal High Court in Kano which ruled that the so-called offence I am being accused of is a federal offence that can only be prosecuted by the Attorney General of the Federation and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

IG Promotes 10,581 Inspectors, Rank and File

Kingsley Nwezeh in Abuja

The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, yesterday, ordered the promotion of 10,581 deserving junior officers of the inspectorate cadre, and the rank and file.

Following the directive, the Deputy Inspector-General of Police overseeing the Department of Finance and Administration (DIG DFA), Bala Ciroma, was tasked with coordinating efforts alongside the Commissioner of Police (Welfare) to commence the promotion process promptly.

A statement by Force Headquarters said the breakdown of the promotions showed that 9,831 police constables slated to be promoted to the rank of corporal, 81 corporals to advance to the rank of sergeant and 669 officers set to progress from the rank of sergeant to inspectors.

The statement signed by Force Public Relations Officer and Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP)said the exercise will ensure effectiveness and sustain the ongoing manpower development

not dump the party. He gave this assurance Thursday at the Abia State PDP caucus meeting held at the party's new secretariat at Ogurube Layout Umuahia, during which party leaders and stakeholders discussed ways and means of rebuilding the party. initiatives of the Nigeria Police. He, however, reassured that promotions in the force will be solely on merit.

Ikpeazu, who left office on May 29, 2023 after completing his second tenure as governor, has been heavily linked with possible defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The speculation gained currency last week when some of his past aides, including the former Chief of Staff, Prof. Anthony Agbazuere, moved to the APC on the eve of the party's South-east stakeholders meeting at Owerri, the Imo State capital.

The defection of his former aides and allies sparked speculations that the immediate past Abia governor had sent forerunners to prepare the way for his eventual waving

of broom.

But Ikpeazu, who was attending a public function in Umuahia for the first time since after his party handed over control of Abia to the Labour Party, told the Abia PDP caucus that he has no plan to leave the former ruling party.

He said that he would rather stay put to rebuild the party that gave him the platform to be the chief executive of Abia for eight years, adding that the exit of his former aides to other parties was their personal choices. "I will remain in PDP and will never be found wanting in my responsibilities to our party and its rebuilding process.

Speaking at Apapa District Women Ministry's rally recently, Chukwudebelu, urged women to prioritise financial literacy, citing its relevance for both personal, family and communal well-being.

Apapa District Women Ministry is a department in Assemblies of God Apapa, being coordinated by Reverend Adanma Hope Chukwudebelu.

Precious Okoi: Iroko Speaks of Beauty, Simplicity Through Our Designs, Fashion

Iroko , a ready to wear fashion brand that specialises in beautifully designed female clothes and hand bags, made its debut in the Nigerian fashion scene at the last Lagos Fashion Festival, showcasing its African inspired pieces. The founder and creative director, Precious Okoi speaks on the brand, its designs, the inspiration behind it and the outlook, with a vision to be a household name in Africa. Ferdinand Ekechukwu brings the excerpts:

Tellusaboutyourbrand,Iroko?

Iroko is actually where ‘Artmeets Fashion’. We are a ready to wear brand that produces beautiful and exquisite handmade clothes and hand bags. Why we say ‘Art meets Fashion’ is because most of our pieces have hand-painted designs on them that speak to our African roots and that also appeals to whatever aesthetics that we want. So, our collection has African-inspired pieces that speak to our roots designs. We also have our handmade bags of beautiful cowhide leather and it also has hand painted designs on them.

Thecollection/pieces;aretheyallonshowcase today?

Yes, they are all here. We are showcasing them at our exhibition boot and we are also on the runway today. One other major thing to also note about our brand is that we are very sustainable-conscious. We believe so much in sustainability. That is the bedrock of our brand. It isn’t just a buzz word for us at Iroko. So, we source our materials in ethical manners and we also make a whole lot. We do a lot of up cycling and a lot of recycling as it were. So, there are some, for our bags for instance, we use a whole lot of leather that people would have said ‘ok I will discard this as it were’, in the industry’, so, we upcycle it to produce our bags. And in terms of sourcing, we are very conscious of sourcing ethically for all our products and materials used.

Whoareyourtargets?

Everyone is our target audience. Fashion is an expression. So, and this is an art. Everybody loves art one way or the other. You don’t have to be a connoisseur to say okay. One way or the other art is in everything; in the bags you carry, in the shoes you wear, in everything. So people, anyone who loves art, would love our pieces. Because our pieces are more art inspired. Anyone who loves their homeland would love our pieces because our pieces also call you home, gives you a deeper meaning, gives you a sense

Wale Ojo Wears Wole Soyinka’s Garb in ‘The Man Died’

Renowned Nigerian-British actor, Wale Ojo has taken on the character of Wole Soyinka in an adaptation of ‘The Man Died’, a memoir of the famous writer’s prison experience initially published in 1972, two years after the Nigerian Civil War ended. The book chronicles the author’s thoughts when the government held him as a political prisoner during the war in the late 1960s.

The award winning actor had acknowledged after the release of the movie trailer recently. ‘The much anticipated ‘The Man Died’ will premiere in July 2024, coinciding with Wole Soyinka’s 90th birthday anniversary. Speaking on the historic movie, Wale Ojo, said it’s an honour, and one of the high points of his career, to have played Wole Soyinka.

The Breadth of Life star in a post on social media wrote, “Ladies and Gentlemen I present to you ‘The Man Died’. It was an absolute in literature that Nigeria has ever produced, as well as a man who has made a huge impact

upon the politics and people of his generation.” He added that the movie is a “Must Watch”. Produced by Femi Odugbemi and directed stars Nollywood legends such as Sam Dede, Norbert Young, and Francis Onwochei, alongside a host of other brilliant actors - Edmond Enabe, and Segilola Ogidan. Others are Simileoluwa Hassan, Christiana Oshunniyi, and newcomer, Abraham Amkpa.

of belonging. So, our pieces appeal to everyone. We are majorly a female ready to wear brand for now.

Well, we are not in competition with anyone. trajectory. We are on our own path. We are on our own journey. And we are not in a hurry. We are taking it one step after another. And quality will always speak for itself. The design will always speak for itself. So, those are the key things that will stand us out. We are looking inwards to always improve on ourselves. Where we were when we started is not where we are now. And we keep improving and keep getting better. It’s a continuous journey.

Formost,there’salwaysabackstory.What’s yours?

For me, I’m the daughter of a tailor (laughs). Yes, my mum. I grew up in the house of a tailor. But I didn’t toe the line until very recently. But I have always been fashion-conscious. I have always loved putting things together and coming up with something unique. I believe so much in minimalism and simplicity. So, why I now decided to take this further is I saw a niche that story to tell in Africa. Our story is so vast. So, I felt one way I can tell a part of the African story is through expression in our designs, which is why I said our designs are artistic in nature. So, if you check the ones we have which is the elephant design that has the strength of the African elephant you will see the beauty and simplicity

of it in the design.

Let’stalkaboutthedesigns,consideringthe weather,howfriendlyarethefabrics?

Yes, our clothes are light weight; our fabrics are lightweight, because we are already in a very climatic region in Africa; Africa is not a cold region. So, our fabrics allows for a lot of air. So, it’s not heavy. Even with how hot the weather is, our fabrics will still be comfortable bearing any of our designs because we put that into consideration. Even in our designs, our designs are not bulky. One other keyword for us in terms of the brand is ‘less is more.’ We are a very minimalist brand. So, we don’t believe that you have to put the entire world in the design for it to come out beautiful. Once you see our designs you would know that less is actually more.

WhereareyoubasedinLagos?

Our factory is in Ogudu, on the Mainland. Right now we are strictly an online store. But soon because we are working hard towards that.

You know price is relative. What I will call so expensive’. So, I believe in value. If you value something, irrespective of the price, you would pay for it. But in terms of looking at it in naira of pricing and considering what it is that we are quality of the designs, and the intricacies in the art designs on it, even in the material sourcing because we ensure that all the fabrics we use in the production are all topnotch.

Review of Linda Eroke-Okafor’s Book: Revealed!

9 Ways I Overcame Depression On Zero Budge BOOK REVIEW

Thomas Hobbes, the 17th-century philosopher once said: “Without government, life will be solitary, brutish, and short as a result of violent competition for resources. “

While it is true that we have a government in Nigeria, it can be said that Nigeria has no government if the essence of government is to produce well-thought-out policies and programmes which benefit the people. For many decades now, Nigeria has not enjoyed any appreciable level of development. Even worse, we have gradually become complacent and indeed complicit in accepting this jungle existence where nothing works.

We have worsened from erratic power supply to almost weekly national grid collapses. Our national currency has worsened from parity with the strongest in the world to two digits, to three digits, and now to thousands to one. We have nose-dived from brain-drain of professionals to entire families fleeing their homeland as if we are at war. Whichever way one looks, life is Hobbesian - solitary, brutish, and short.

It is therefore natural that in the daily struggle to make ends meet, some things must suffer. The primary and worst casualty is health. And one of the most recurring is depression. Unfortunately, as a result of the terrible conditions of our health service sector which continue to take a heavy battering, we may never know the frequency of occurrence nor the number of fatalities from depression.

In her 6-chapter e-book, Linda Eroke-Okafor states “The World Bank in its 2023 report on Nigeria said 130 million Nigerians are living in multidimensional poverty. The report added that with the removal of fuel subsidy by President Bola Tinubu’s administration in May 2023, more Nigerians will sacrifice their health care to adjust to the rising cost of living. This is disastrous and needs increased attention by all, including The Church.

“Revealed! 9 Ways I Overcame Depression On Zero Budget” is a practical book that is easy to read. Indeed, it can be read from start to finish in one sitting. The language is very simple and unpretentious such that anyone with an average education can easily digest this book. Its 9-way approach on zero budget makes it even more streamlined.

Chapter 1 titled “Understanding Depression” covers the definition of depression and statistical representation, why depression is more prevalent among women, the causes and symptoms of depression, importance of self-awareness, and dealing with stigmatization and discrimination that comes with depression.

Here, the author explains what Depression is. She employs the WHO’s view of it and then brings it home to our immediate Nigerian experience. She writes: “Depression is a challenging mental condition affecting millions of people worldwide. Specifically, the World Health Organization (WHO) has said that an estimated 3.8% of the world population experience depression. That is approximately 280m people in the world.

“In Nigeria, the situation is worse given the numerous challenges that the population is faced with daily. These challenges include rising cost of living, poor electricity, deplorable road network, and inadequate water supply among other difficult living conditions that have been compounded by an economy that is on a tailspin. Given this scenario, depression can be suffered by anybody irrespective of age and strata in society.” One very gripping part is where she explains why women are more at risk.

L-R: Assistant General Secretary in Charge of President’s Office, Nigeria Labour Congress, Onyeka Chris; Commu- nications/ Media Relations Manager · Dangote Industries Limited, Okey Nwankwo; author and former THISDAY La- bour Correspondent, Linda Eroke-Okafor; wife of the Pas- tor in Charge of Redeemed Christian Church of God, Fruit- fulvine Parish, Ago Palace Way, Lagos, Sharon Osa-Daniel, and Chairman of the occasion/ CEO, BRANDish Media, Ikem Okuhu, during the launch of the book authored by Eroke- Okafor in Lagos…recently

In chapter two, the writer takes us through a concise summary of “My life before the sad event,” which covers “Blissful Marital Life,” “Fulfillment at Work,” and “Joyful motherhood.”

Chapter 3 holds “The event that changed my life,” with the sub-themes “A bitter experience,” “Another attack and doctor’s advice” and “Financial constraints, Determined to succeed.” She recounts how it all started suddenly. In the midst of this, she writes: “Moreso, my voice wasn’t clear enough as people found it difficult to hear me whenever I tried to communicate. I cried and cried asking myself if that’s the way my life will come to an abrupt end. My situation was made worse as nobody understood what I was going through. People look up to me for help but now I am helpless, nobody to turn to.

“I was frustrated and I experienced feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness, and helplessness. I remember telling my sister to take care of my children should anything happen to me. I was in my thirties and had a lot to achieve in life. More importantly, I was doing my Master’s degree programme at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and was in my last semester.

“You see, it came to a point in my life when I thought that I was not going to make it, having suffered two stroke attacks. However, in the midst of all these, a voice whispered to me that I shouldn’t give up on myself so quickly, noting that God is not through with me yet and I will not die but live to fulfill my destiny.”

Chapter 4 covers “Venture into Alternative Medicine”, “A Ray of Hope”, and “The August Visitors.” In Chapter 5, she explains “How I overcame depression without spending money” and details the 9 ways. Should I name them?

Conclusion:

The concluding Chapter Six provides “Tips for Success” and “Never stop trying.”

I will quote one of many very inspirational statements in this e-book: “There are times in our lives when we wonder why some people seem to make it effortlessly while others are left struggling without getting positive results.

“This is partly due to our mindset and failure to take adequate steps to succeed. Often, we make wrong decisions and we are not patient enough to learn from our mistakes.”

First, we must thank the author for the effort to write this book. Her journalism experience may have likely helped, yet

the discipline of writing is becoming very scarce indeed. Moreover, books don’t always make so much money. If the writer is solely focused on income, he or she may be well advised to look to other ventures for faster turnover and return on investment. Little wonder, some in this generation are quick to ask “na who book help?” A very idiotic question, at best, but deeply reflective of how low our societal values have sunk.

Thirdly, having written this book from a near-death experience, we will do well to join her Thanksgiving by buying the book and sharing it with others. In this way, we will be further evangelism for God.

As a people, we are not very renowned for reading. Malcolm X is quoted as saying: “If you want to hide something from Black people, put it in a book.” Hopefully, Linda Eroke-Okafor’s labour will encourage us to read more, starting with this book, and to write more. For us Christians, it will be consistent with the truth that “all we have come from God, and of Your own do we give you.” Posterity will record and celebrate her contribution to public health and societal well-being, especially out of adversity.

James 1: 2 – 4 states “My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, 3 knowing that the testing of your faith produces [a]patience. 4 But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be [b]perfect and complete, lacking nothing.”

James 1:2-8 NKJV - - Bible Gateway

Linda Eroke-Okafor has done marvelously well in penning this recount to God’s glory. I call upon us all to support this work, also to God’s glory. There is a saying that “All good work on God’s earth, is God’s work.”

Julius Osibamowo: An Icon with Legacy of Giving

Ibilola Adefope

On the 25th of November 2023, Chief Julius Osibamowo passed on to the great beyond at the grand old age of over 97 years. He lived a long and fulfilled life, an unsung hero in the history of Nigeria, and like his ancient namesake Julius Caesar “he came, he saw, and he conquered.” He was born in Ikenne in Ogun State on April 11, 1926, to the family of the Late Pa Joel and Late Mama Mary Efunsola Osibamowo in Ikenne Remo. His parents were hardworking and well esteemed in the community, despite relatively modest means. He had numerous sisters and brothers, all of Blessed Memory.

EDUCATION

Julius Osibamowo was an exceptional student right from his primary school days at St Saviour’s School in Ikenne up to his secondary school at the Baptist Boys High School Abeokuta (BBHS) which he attended and, was until his demise endowed as the life patron of the school. Of note, at the BBHS 100th anniversary celebration held in 2022, he was acknowledged as the oldest surviving old boy of the school. In 1946, the very clever young Julius Osibamowo won a scholarship via a competitive examination, where he scored the fourth highest mark nationally. He then travelled overseas to study civil engineering at Glasgow University in Scotland. He later completed a master’s degree in municipal engineering (now called environmental engineering) at the highly esteemed Imperial College in London, UK.

FAMILY LIFE

During his educational sojourn in UK, he met Miss Theresa Osilaja in London. Theresa of Blessed Memory was the daughter of the renowned Chief Ignatius Washington Osilaja, an indigene of Ijebu Ode ordained under the order of the Knight of St. Slyvester, was one of the few converts instrumental in bringing the Catholic Church to Nigeria and was the first and largest indigenous commercial printer in Nigeria at the time, and her mother who was a princess from Ile Ijosi, Ilesi Ijebu Ode. Julius Osibamowo married her in 1956, greatly reaping the benefit of her strict Christian upbringing confirming the scriptures that “a husband of a good wife is a fortunate man, he has found a good thing and obtained favour from the Lord”, this reality he regrettably only acknowledged in toto shortly before his passing. They had three children in the United Kingdom, Babatunde, Efunbo and Oluyemi and returned to Nigeria on the sponsorship of his very wealthy father-in-law expecting their fourth child Ibilola, and thereafter Folasade and Olaleke were added to the devout Christian family fold. A very ambitious, entrepreneurial and a highly motivated young man, Julius Osibamowo established his own civil engineering company EFBIKO Engineering Ltd in 1964. EFBIKO being an acronym, made up of the first letters of his name, his wife’s name and the names of his six children in the following order - Efunbo, Folashade, Babatunde, Ibilola, Kofoworola, Olatunji, Oluyemisi and Olaleke. He was blessed with a devout Catholic, very hardworking and generous wife who devoted her life to being a sacrificial wife, caring mother and erudite business partner, together they raised highly successful children from their union; all professionals in different fields namely a Civil Engineer, Medical

Doctor, Medical Doctor, Lawyer, Architect and Civil Engineer. Their union has been exceedingly and abundantly blessed with numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren, who are currently all resident in the UK and USA.

PROFESSIONAL CAREER

On his return to Nigeria, Julius Osibamowo first worked at the Lagos City Town Council as an assistant town engineer, becoming the only chartered municipal engineer in the council and probably in the entire country. After leaving Lagos Town Council, he joined Dorman Long Ltd where he was the first professional Nigerian engineer on their staff roll. Recently, when Dorman Long celebrated their 75th anniversary, he was invited and again honored as the longest surviving ex-employee of the company. Impressively, he was a key member of the first set of professional civil engineers in Nigeria and, eventually became the President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, as well as the Vice President of the World Federation of Engineering Organisations; positions he held for several years.

EFBIKO Engineering rapidly grew to become the largest indigenous civil engineering company in Nigeria, regularly competing for projects with the foreign giants such as Julius Berger, G. Cappa etc and became foreign partners with the billion dollars organisation, Camorati Italian Construction situated in Milan in the early 70’s. Some of the notable projects completed included the original Ikeja Airport, sections of Tin Can port, the roads and residential infrastructures in Festac Town, the Kaduna State Water Scheme and numerous other multimillion naira projects nationwide. EFBIKO Engineering constructed numerous residential properties throughout the width and breath of Lagos; they pioneered the development of numerous properties situated in the Lagos Mainland, in particular the highbrow suburbs of Okupe Estate in Ikeja in the 80’s; of particular note is “in recognition of the laudable contribution to the development of Okupe Estate”, the prime street was re-named “Kofoworola Crescent” after his wife Theresa Kofoworola Osibamowo of Blessed Memory.

WORK EXPERIENCE

He was a Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers (M.I.C.E), a Member of the Institution of Public Health Engineers (M.I.P.H.E.) and a Fellow of Nigerian Society of Engineers (F.N.S.E). His career spanned over six decades, as he worked literally till the very end having started as a Senior Assistant City Engineer of Lagos City Council, as Project Engineer at Dorman Long and finally as the Chairman of EFBIKO Engineering Limited. He undertook executive tasks with numerous professional associations namely as a Member of the Governing Council of Yaba College of Technology for eight years; the Nigerian Representative for the World Federation of Engineering Organisation for ten years and attended Seminars, Symposiums and Conferences in Leningrad, Washington, Ottawa, London, Paris, Budapest, Cairo, Tunis, Jakarta and Casablanca. Unrelenting in his pursuit of excellence in industry and a desire to make an impact in Nigeira, in the public sector he accepted appointments as Member of the Industrial Committee for Ogun State and Ogun State Committee on Export Promotion; Member Advisory Council of College of Agricultural Science, Ogun State University; Chairman of Committee on Relocation of Medical School to Ikenne Remo and as the Chairman of Gateway Transit Ltd, Ogun State and Member of Ogun State Polytechnic Governing Council. Meanwhile in the private sector, he was appointed the President of Ogun State Association of Standard Hotel Owners; Life Vice-President of Ogun State Council of Chambers of Commerce; President of Ogun State Council of Chambers of Commerce, Industry,

Mines and Agriculture; National President of Baptist Boys’ High School Old Boys Association; Member of Rotary Club of Ikenne and Patron of Remo Local Association of Boys Scout of Nigeria; Member of Governing Council Nassarawa College of Technology; Grand patron of Friendship Badminton Club; Chairman of Excelsior Continuing Education Centre, Ikenne; Chairman of Body of Governors of United High School, Ikenne and Chairman of Association of Tourism Practitioners of Nigeria, Ogun State Chapter. At the height of his professional success in 1982, Julius Osibamowo being a thoroughbred patriot decided he was going back to his hometown in Ikenne, Ogun State to contribute to the community development of the town. At the time, the family could not really understand his decision to leave the thriving business environment in Lagos to permanently relocate to Ikenne, but he prudently reasoned that a man cannot be rich and completely fulfilled, if he was surrounded by so much poverty in his community. He then began what can only be described as one of the largest and most altruistic distribution of great wealth to literally all and sundry; family and non-family members inclusive, and fondly got nicknamed “Baba Scholarship” in Ikenne, and the whole of Ogun State.

He practiced the biblical ethos of being his brother’s keeper showcasing “whoever gives to the poor and needy is in reality, giving to the Lord” and in so doing, was blessed to live to the highly remarkable “near-miss by 2 years” centenary mark as the date of his funeral was his 98th birthday. Whilst in Ikenne for a duration spanning over 40 years, he laboured tirelessly and established numerous types of businesses in Ikenne with his main objective being not-for-profit, but to provide gainful employment to the indigenes of the town.

Adams Oshiomhole: An Uncommon Leader

On the auspicious occasion of distinguished Senator Adams Oshiomhole’s 72nd birthday, it is expedient that quality time is taken to celebrate and honour the remarkable life and accomplishments of this esteemed figure in Nigerian politics. This milestone birthday serves as an opportunity to reflect on his journey, contributions to society, and the impact he has made on the lives of countless individuals.

Senator Adams Oshiomhole’s life story is an inspiring tale of resilience, determination, and a commitment to public service. From humble beginnings, he rose to prominence through hard work and a relentless pursuit of his goals. His journey from being a factory worker to becoming a prominent politician and leader is a testament to his perseverance and unwavering belief in his ability to bring about positive change.

Throughout his career, Oshiomhole has demonstrated strong leadership qualities and a keen understanding of the challenges faced by the Nigerian people. He has been a steadfast advocate for the rights of the common man, consistently speaking up for the downtrodden and marginalised communities. His tireless efforts in championing pro-people policies and initiatives have earned him the respect and admiration of many.

Being a firm protagonist for this pro-people policies and initiatives was the highlights of his time as the Chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress. I have no doubt that his excellent show of integrity and alignment with the dreams of the common man contributed immensely to earn him the faith and trust of the good people of Edo state, enough to choose him as Governor between November 2008 and November 2016. Two solid terms of unprecedented growth and developments for the state, the likes of which are sorely missed in recent times.

The same trust and confidence in his ability is what propelled the people of Edo North Senatorial district to ensure with their votes that he represents them in the Red Chambers of the National Assembly in the 2023 general elections. A decision that has proven to be fruitful not only for the people of Edo North or Edo State but in fact for the whole nation. He has championed the fight against corrupt practices especially as regards budgeting and financial allocations while also maintaining and showcasing the pros of leaders with steadfast integrity. The dogged comradeship mentality he ever so displayed as labour leader is clearly enshrined in his DNA more so that despite being of the ruling party he has championed the scrutiny of various government agencies and parastatals to ensure transparency and integrity in their

dealings. This has earned him the respect of his peers in such a short time, indeed a distinguished Senator and the people have taken notice.

Representing Edo North Senatorial District, Adams Oshiomhole has captured the attention and gained admiration for his vocal and impassioned speeches on the floor of the senate. Known for his eloquence and ability to articulate his positions effectively, Oshiomhole has used his platform to advocate for policies and initiatives that would drive economic growth, enhance social welfare, and promote good governance.

One of the remarkable aspects of his leadership as a senator is his commitment to integrity and honesty. He has consistently

displayed a strong moral compass, advocating for ethical conduct within the political sphere. His dedication to upholding high standards of integrity has earned him the respect of his colleagues and constituents alike. Placing focus on promoting accountability, transparency, and good governance has been a cornerstone of his leadership. He recognizes the importance of a government that is accountable to the people and works tirelessly to ensure that public officials are held responsible for their actions. Through his speeches, Oshiomhole has highlighted and emphasised the significance of citizen participation in decision-making processes.

Having attained commendable leadership positions in the country, one would expect the man to always be sandwiched by a host of aides and security personnel as political leaders of our time are accustomed to even at work premises. On one of my visits to the National Assembly, I inadvertently ran into the man and I needed a few minutes for my eyes to convince my brain to actually agree that it was him. There he was walking majestically into the buildings with an aura of simplicity and accessibility. Without any aide or security personnel in sight.

This simplicity and down-to-earth nature shows his trust in the democratic process, accessibility to constituents, and commitment to transparency and accountability. By embracing a minimal aide and security approach, Senator Oshiomhole epitomises the qualities of a dedicated public servant who prioritises the needs and concerns of the people he represents. He recognises the importance of being in touch with the realities faced by ordinary citizens, and by interacting with them without a significant security presence, he demonstrates a willingness to directly engage with their daily experiences.

Oshiomohole’s impact extends beyond his accomplishments in politics. He has also been actively involved in empowering the youth and advocating for education and skills development. He recognizes the importance of equipping the younger generation with the tools they need to build a prosperous future. Through various initiatives, he has worked tirelessly to create opportunities for young Nigerians and inspire them to reach their full potential.

As we celebrate Adams Oshiomhole at 72, it is essential to acknowledge the positive influence he has had on the nation. His leadership, integrity, and commitment to the welfare of the people have left an indelible mark on Nigerian politics. His vision for a better Nigeria, coupled with his determination to effect change, has inspired many to work towards a brighter future.

On this special day, let us come together to honor Adams Oshiomhole’s achievements, commend his lifelong dedication to public service, and express our gratitude for his unwavering commitment to the betterment of society. May his birthday be filled with joy, gratitude, and the knowledge that his contributions have made a difference in the lives of many. Happy 72nd birthday, Oshio Baba!

Make Nigeria’s Highways Safe for Travellers, Transporters Urge

The National President of the Association of Luxury Bus Owners of Nigeria (ALBON), Mr. Nonso Ubajaka, has bemoaned the rising cases of robbery and kidnapping targeted at members’ vehicles on various routes across the country lately.

Ubajaka, was reacting to an incident on Good Friday night when a vehicle, an Abakaliki-bound 59-seater luxury bus that belonged to an ALBON member, Ifesinachi Transport Nig. Ltd., was robbed at Ijebu Ode in Ogun State, and set ablaze with the passengers on board.

The luxury bus took off from Maza Maza in Lagos, on Friday, March 29, and was on the way to the Ebonyi State capital when the hoodlums struck, robbed the passengers and locked the vehicle from outside before setting it ablaze.

“But, robbing and burning a luxury bus with 59 passengers on board is unprecedented. This is no longer robbery. It is terrorism,” Ubajaka said on Sunday.

However, all the passengers were reported to have escaped after they smashed the windows and climbed out of the bus before it was completely consumed by the raging fire.

The management of Ifesinachi Transport Nig. Ltd also appealed to the federal government to secure the nation’s highways and make them

safer for the travelling public.

Commenting on the incident, the Managing Director/CEO of Ifesinachi, Prince Emeka Mamah, said: “This new dimension to armed robbery which is now accompanied by terrorism, is shocking.”

Calling for proper investigation of the Ijebu

Ode incident, both Mamah and Ubajaka appealed to the government and the security agencies to urgently tackle the spate of robberies, abduction and now arson, on the inter-state routes.

A passenger who narrated the incident early Saturday morning in a video recording that showed

parts of the long bus still burning, confirmed that no life was lost, though, according to him, some of them sustained injuries.

The passenger, who like many other victims, lost his shirt and other personal belongings to the robbers, narrated, “This is the night bus (showing the charred remains of the 59-seater vehicle) in which we were travelling home for Easter on Friday.

“The armed robbers attacked us at Ijebu Ode, and dealt with us: They stripped us of our dresses and belongings and beat us mercilessly. Some of us have Matchett wounds

“They forced us back into the bus and set it ablaze. But, we are grateful to God that nobody was burnt to death, because we all managed to escape from the burning vehicle alive.

“Though some of us sustained only injuries, we all lost our belongings because the robbers took everything with them, including even the clothes some of us were wearing.

“We have been stranded here since 2 am (Saturday morning): Men, women and children who are innocently travelling to the east to celebrate Easter.”

To the Managing Director of Ifesinachi, that armed robbers now operate like terrorists is a terrifying dimension that should worry all and sundry, including the government, because nobody knows who will be the victim next time.

SOCCER Will He Ever Get There? Ethan Nwaneri
GLOBAL

Ethan Nwaneri Will He Ever Get There?

At 15 years and 181 days,he remains the youngest player to ever play in the Premier League and only penultimate week he signed his first professional contract forArsenal. Though,Gunners’manager, MikelArteta,is of the opinion that theAnglo-Nigerian is ready to rough feathers with the big boys, but the football world has witnessed manyArsenal’s promising Hale Products that turned out to be big flops. The big question now is ,will Ethan Nwaneri rise to the occasion?

Bukayo Saka, Eddie Nketiah, Reiss Nelson and Emile Smith Rowe are just a few players that have made the transition from the Arsenal academy to the first team look easy in recent years.

Mikel Arteta has followed in the footsteps of George Graham, Arsene Wenger and even Unai Emery in putting his faith in the club’s young players.

But while a number of Arsenal academy graduates have gone on to become world class stars, others though have failed to live up to the hype.

Promising stars like Chris Willock, Fran Merida, Arturo Lupoli, Wellington Silva, Gedion Zelalem and David Bentley were players whose names were sang to high heavens while at Hale, but never had success with Arsenal senior team.

Ethan Nwaneri, the youngest player in Premier League history, formalised his commitment to Arsenal by signing his first professional contract at the club.

Arsenal fought off serious interest from some of the Premier League’s biggest sides to keep hold of Nwaneri, who last year agreed to stay in north London.

Having turned 17 years last month, Nwaneri has now put pen to paper on a deal that is believed to be one of the most lucrative contracts ever offered to a youthteam player at Arsenal.

Nwaneri, an attacking midfielder, was only 15 when he made his Premier League debut in Arsenal’s 3-0 win at Brentford in September 2022. He made another senior appearance earlier this season, as a

substitute in Arsenal’s 6-0 victory at West Ham United.

The England youth international is the youngest player to represent Arsenal’s first team, and has scored 14 goals in 14 appearances for the club’s academy sides this season.

Per Mertesacker, the former Arsenal defender who is now the club’s academy manager, said: “Ethan has a strong ability to master the ball and dominate possession, this is what we are all about at Arsenal Football Club.”

Nwaneri is held in high regard by the senior players in Arteta’s first-team squad. Some of those first-team stars actively encouraged Arteta, during the game at West Ham, to throw Nwaneri into action.

“There is something that you have to have in your team, and that is the trust of the teammates,” said Arteta after the game. “And I had two things: one, the players on the bench whispering to bring Ethan on, which is a great thing to hear, and the other one your teammates want to give you the ball all of the time.

“If they do that, it’s because they really trust you and you only have to see how many times he was involved. So it was a great sign.”

Arsenal’s progress in recent seasons has made it harder than ever for talented youngsters to take the step from academy football to the senior team. To play in midfield for the first-team, for example, requires a player to be as good as Declan Rice (£105 million), Kai Havertz (£65 million) and Martin Odegaard (£30 million).

The levels are astonishingly high, and the vast majority of academy players, even the very best players in the youth ranks will never make it at Arsenal. Indeed, there is an expectation that some of the more exciting young talents of the past few years will probably leave the club this summer.

It says so much about Nwaneri, then, that Arsenal were so desperate to secure his long-term future. This is a rare talent, even among rare talents, and there is a feeling at the club that he might have a real chance of making the grade, if everything goes to plan over these next few years.

Nwaneri has already earned the respect of his team-mates, who called for Arteta to bring him on against West Ham earlier this season. They can see, up close, what kind of technical ability and creative talent he brings to the pitch. The Arsenal fans got a glimpse of it, too, when he did make it off the bench against West Ham. This new professional contract was agreed months ago but the formalisation of it, now that Nwaneri is 17, is an important milestone in the England youth international’s journey.

Gunners’ manager has indeed urged Nwaneri to make the most of his opportunity at Arsenal after signing his first professional contract last week.

Nwaneri made his Premier League debut on 18 September 2022 against Brentford at the age of 15 years and 181 days, becoming the youngest player to appear in

the top flight of English football.

When speaking about Nwaneri, Arteta said the youngster was ‘very close’ to the first team and challenged him to secure a regular place in Arsenal’s matchday squad.

‘I was really happy for Nwaneri signing a professional contract,’ he said. ‘He had a great day, he had all his family and important people around him.

‘A really proud moment to see another academy graduate signing his pro contract. He is very close to the first team. The opportunity is there, now he needs to take it.’

Arsenal academy manager Per Mertesacker said: “We are extremely proud of Ethan and his journey, from pre-academy to Hale End, then a seamless transition to Sobha Realty Training Centre and then making his first-team debut.

“Ethan’s journey now continues, and we will all be there alongside him to support his development. Ethan has a strong ability to master the ball and dominate possession, this is what we are all about at Arsenal Football Club.”

Nwaneri has been turning out for Arsenal’s youth teams this season, scoring 14 goals in as many appearances while getting the occasional opportunity with the first XI.

Nwaneri’s journey to the brink of first-team football has been nothing short of remarkable, capturing the attention of football enthusiasts worldwide.

As anticipation mounts among fans and pundits alike, Nwaneri’s imminent graduation to Arsenal’s first team heralds a new chapter in the club’s storied history, promising an infusion of youthful energy and talent into the Premier League.

However, there can be no telling whether he will ultimately be good enough for a club that is competing for the Premier League and Champions League. To do so, he will n eed to wring every drop of talent out of himself. But it is clear that Arsenal believe he might one day reach those levels, as Saka has done since his own graduation from the academy.

Liverpool Cross Man Utd Path again in Title Quest

The two most successful clubs in English football-Manchester United and Liverpool will tomorrow at OldTrafford go head-to-head in what is expected to be a classic with the teams coming to the encounter with different mission. While the visitors will be aiming to establish their position at the top of the league, the host will be pushing for a top-four spot. Both teams are, however, coming to the encounter from perception, while the Devils will be looking for a response after their dramatic 4-3 loss to Chelsea on Thursday, Liverpool will be boosted by the 3-1 win against Sheffield Wednesday

Three weeks on from butting heads in an engrossing FACup quarter-final, long-time adversaries Manchester United and Liverpool cross paths once again on Sunday, squaring off at Old Trafford in the Premier League.

Erik ten Hag’s men prevailed 4-3 when the two behemoths locked horns in a knockout setting, but the Red Devils astonishingly found themselves on the wrong end of such a seven-goal scoreline in midweek.

Flash back to March 17, when the seldom-seen Amad Diallo sparked Old Trafford mayhem with a last-gasp winner

to send Man United into the FA Cup finals at Liverpool’s expense, thereby crushing Jurgen Klopp’s dreams of departing with an additional four medals in his suitcase.

However, the Red Devils were incredibly handed a dose of their own seven-goal medicine on Thursday evening, where a 3-2 triumph over Chelsea was ostensibly on the cards at the end of a frenzied battle, only for Cole Palmer’s second penalty of the night to precede an extraordinary 101st-minute clincher, the latest winning goal on record in the Premier League.

As Chelsea roared in delight, Man United cast their heads down in dejection at setting a new unwanted Premier League record - no side had ever gone on to lose a game in the tournament after leading so late - and Thursday’s reverse might be the biggest blot on Ten Hag’s notebook just yet.

With the eagle eyes of Sir Jim Ratcliffe observing his every move, the underfire Ten Hag has limited recovery time to play with for the sixth-placed Red Devils, who are nine points behind Tottenham Hotspur and have an 11-point deficit to make up to Aston Villa, albeit with a game in hand on the Lions.

After making an exceptional start to February with four top-flight wins on the trot, Man United return to play in front of a shell-shocked Old Trafford faithful with just one victory to show from their last five Premier League battles - taking a mere four points in that time - but they have already upset the apple cart to upset the Reds once in 2024.

While FA Cup glory is now a pipe dream owing to last month’s pulsating quarterfinal loss, Liverpool are still in control of their Premier League title destiny owing to an expected triumph over Sheffield United, albeit one which did not come as easily as many foretold.

A comical Darwin Nunez opener was cancelled out by a Conor Bradley own goal as the Reds were briefly made to pay for their lethargic performance, but Alexis Mac Allister’s piledriver breathed new life into the Anfield crowd before Cody Gakpo made sure of maximum points.

On account of their third home win on the bounce in all competitions, Klopp’s charges enter the weekend with their two-point buffer over Arsenal and three-point lead over Manchester City still intact, although both of their title rivals can knock them down the standings by prevailing on Saturday.

The Reds have not taken to the road in any tournament since March’s FA Cup heartache, but six of their last seven Premier League games on rival turf have ended in victory, and it has been just over 12 months since Klopp’s men last failed to make the net ripple in a top-flight away contest.

Furthermore, no other team in Europe’s top five leagues can match Liverpool’s unrivalled 16 victories and 59 goals in all tournaments in 2024, and despite being held to a drab goalless draw by Man United at Anfield earlier in the season, they have not failed to score in both of their Premier League meetings with the Red Devils since 2007-08, offering hope of an immediate slice of vengeance.

Super Falcons Gets Slight Advantage over Banyana Banyana, Win 1-0

A goal from the team captain, Rasheedat Ajibade was the breather as Nigeria emerged victorious over the Banyana Banyana of South Africa at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja, yesterday.

Coach Randy Waldrum called Pachuca forward, Chinwendu Ihezuo, into the Falcons’ starting lineup as Asisat Oshoala couldn’t complete the team’s training sessions due to late arrival.

Ihezueo came close to breaking the deadlock inside five minutes after a ball from Jennifer Echegini found her in space, but her effort went wide. She headed towards goal from a Chidinma Okeke cross in the 18th minute, but the outcome of her attempt was the same as the first.

Her resilience paid off with four minutes left before the half-time whistle. A mazy run from the 26-year-old

striker saw South Africa’s Niko trip her in the box.

Atletico De Madrid Femenino winger, Rasheedat Ajibade, stepped up to take the resulting spot-kick. The Nigerian winger sent the ball to the right-hand side of the goal. South Africa’s Kaylin Swart got a hand to it, but it wasn’t enough to keep the ball from going in.

The second half started with Nigeria piling the pressure on. Ajibade sent Uchenna Kanu through on goal in the 52nd minute, but the Racing Louisville FC striker sent her attempt wide.

As time went on, the 11-time WAFCON winners started to play it safe to avoid conceding any goal and prevent silly mistakes that could cost them when they face South Africa next week.

Waldrum was without two of

his important players in defence and he will be glad his team held the forte at home, leaving the fate of the tie to the return leg in South Africa when both sides meet again on Tuesday.

Nigeria will hope their one-nil advantage is enough when they travel to the Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria to take on Desiree Ellis’ team on Tuesday, April 9.

Prior to this encounter, the Super Falcons had struggled to overcome South Africa in their last five meetings, with their previous victory dating back to November 29, 2016, when they secured a 1-0 win.

Despite securing a narrow victory over South Africa in Abuja, the Super Falcons’ performance in front of goal left much to be desired.

The Banyana will fly back to Johannesburg this morning while the Super Falcons will fly out of Lagos tomorrow night.

NPFL Powerhouses Battle Relegation Live on StarTimes

2024 seems a tough year for some of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) giants like Heartland FC, Akwa United, and Gombe United.

In a shocking turn of events, as the 2024 season of the NPFL enters matchday 29, these giants find themselves embroiled in a desperate fight for survival from the dreaded relegation zone.

For supporters of these clubs, it’s a bitter pill to swallow. Akwa United, the upstarts who stunned the league with their 2021 title triumph, now find themselves scrapping for survival. Gombe United, the perennial playoff contenders, haven’t tasted that

ultimate glory, but their consistent presence in NPFL instills fear in their opponents. Now, both face the unthinkable – a plunge into the relegation abyss. Even Heartland of Owerri, a club with a decorated past and a history of strong league finishes, isn’t immune to the struggle.

The fight to avoid relegation will be a fierce one. Every point counts, and the pressure will be immense. But these are clubs with a rich history, a winning mentality, and a passionate fanbase behind them. They haven’t forgotten how to win.

The weekend will be a test of

character for these fallen giants. Akwa United will be away to Remo Stars. The match will air live on Beta Sports, channel 244 on StarTimes at 5:30pm. Before then, Plateau United will host Doma United at 3pm also on Beta Sports channel. Another match that will air live to fans across the nation this weekend is Lobi Stars versus Enyimba International tomorrow at 4pm.

Two other teams fighting to escape the relegation zone, Heartland FC of Owerri will host Sporting Lagos while Gombe United will be away to Niger Tornadoes tomorrow at 4pm.

PSG Pull Clear of Arsenal in Race to Sign Osimhen

Victor Osimhen is a highly sought-after player, and some Arsenal fans are hopeful that he will join their club.

While the Gunners have been the highest scorers in the Premier League this season, it’s widely acknowledged that they still require a leading striker.

This is why they have been linked with moves for Victor Osimhen and Viktor Gyokeres, among others.

Mikel Arteta’s side is determined to secure one of several high-profile strikers available on the market in the summer.

Arteta is currently working with the options available to him

and maximising their potential, but Arsenal is expected to sign a proven goalscorer when the season concludes.

However, it appears Osimhen may not be headed to Arsenal, as a report from Corriere dello Sport suggests that PSG is now leading the race for the Nigerian striker.

Osimhen has reportedly been identified as the primary target to replace Kylian Mbappe, who is set to depart the French side in the summer. Osimhen has been one of the best strikers around for several seasons, and it is not a surprise that a top club like PSG wants him.

GOtv Boxing Night 31: Baddo Vows to Punish Apata Roro

Fast-rising boxer, Raheem “Baddo” Animashaun, has vowed to punish the more experienced Samuel “Apata Roro” Moses, in their national welterweight challenge fight at GOtv Boxing Night 31.

The boxing showpiece event, scheduled for the Molade Okoya-Thomas Indoor Sports Hall of Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos, on May 1, will feature seven bouts, including a West African Boxing Union (WABU) title fight between Adeyemi “Spirit” Adekanla, and current champion, Segun “War” Adeyemi, both of Nigeria.

Speaking ahead of the fight, “Baddo” said he has the box of tricks to see off his opponent.

“I took this fight to show how good I am. People talk of experience, but I will show that age is just a number in boxing. How long can he go? How strong is Apata Roro? I have what it takes to beat him, and I will shock him,” he said.

The Ibadan-based Apata Roro has a record of two wins, one draw, and nine defeats, while Baddo has two wins from his two professional fights.

Also scheduled for the night is a national flyweight challenge fight between current champion, Sifon ‘Best’ Iwatt, and Sikiru Ogunyaju. The national lightweight category will see Emmanuel Abimbola square up against Azeez Ayobami; Afikun Gbenga will square up against Adewale Oladeji in a super welterweight challenge fight; Hammed ‘Ese’ Ganiyu will confront Yusuf Ogunbumi in the light welterweight category, while Sikiru “Omo Iya Eleja” Shogbesan and Arabambi “Power” Ojo will slug it out in the super featherweight category.

Over 3,000 Athletes for MTN Season 2 Champs in Ibadan

Kemi Olaitan in Ibadan

No fewer than 3,000 athletes are expected in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, at the season 2 of MTN Champs, Nigeria’s Premier Schools’ Athletics Championship. The event is an initiative by MTN Nigeria to nurture competitive spirit of young athletes across four distinct age categories namely Cadet (U14), Youth (U17), Junior (U20), and the newly introduced senior (no age limit). The General Manager, Segment and Devices, MTN, Mr. Idowu Adesokan, while speaking at a press conference in Ibadan, said the initiative was borne out of the need to meet dreams and aspirations of young Nigerians who intend to marry athletics with their education.

According to him, the four-day event which started

yesterday, would end on Monday, April 8, noting that MTN is set to invest on young Nigerians so that they can discover their talents and make use of them.

The Founder, Making of Champions, Bambo Akanni, in his remarks, lauded the Oyo State Government for its effort towards uplifting sport activities in the state.

He said with the event, Nigeria has begun to wake up as a sporting nation, adding that it would assist the country to discover its numerous talents being one of the top three athletic nations in Africa.

He described the event as a nation building and life changing exercise for kids, stating that one of the aims of the event was to support Nigeria core values and making future of the country in Olympic brighter.

The state Commissioner for Youth and Sport, Wasilat Adegoke, on her part, commended the commitment of MTN for the social economy and emancipation of youths across Nigeria. She, however, urged well meaning Nigerians and private organisations to leverage on the ease of doing business in the state created by Governor Seyi Makinde and partner with the state government in the area of sports while thanking Governor Makinde for his love for sports

The state Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Salihu Adelabu said the state government don’t joke with extra curricular activities, especially sports in schools across the state, noting that sports remain one of the veritable tools that bring development, unity, and love to the society.

Zinchenko Ready to Fight in Ukraine if Called up

Arsenal footballer Oleksandr Zinchenko says he would leave the UK to fight in Ukraine if he was called up.

The 27-year-old told BBC Newsnight he has donated about £1m to help people in his home country since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022.

He said Ukraine has become a “shield” for Europe and called for more support.

On Wednesday, the country’s president signed into law a bill lowering the military mobilisation age from 27 to 25.

This would allow the country to call up more people to replen-

ish its reserves and comes after President Volodymyr Zelensky said in December that the country would need 500,000 more soldiers to be mobilised.

BBC Newsnight asked the footballer whether he would answer a call-up to fight, if he saw more value in that than staying to play football in the Premier League. “I think it’s a clear answer. I would go [to fight]”, he said. He added that he had former school friends fighting on the frontline.

“It’s tough to understand that just recently we’ve been in the

same school, we were playing in the playground or on the football pitch, and now they have to defend our country,” he said.

“And, honestly, it’s so hard to accept this, but it is what it is. We cannot give up.”

Zinchenko said the situation in the country is “super tough” but he and his family were “proud of our president”.

“I know maybe some people might think that it’s much easier … for me being here (in London) rather than being there (in Ukraine). I really hope that this war will end soon,” he said.

Nadal Withdraws from Monte Carlo Stating Body Not Ready for Competition

Rafael Nadal has withdrawn from the Monte Carlo Masters as his struggles with injury continue.

The Spaniard, who won his maiden ATP Masters 1000 title in Monte Carlo 19 years ago, has not played competitively since January and stated his body won’t allow him to play at the ATP Masters 1000 event which will take place from April 7-14.

Nadal has been crowned champion 11 times in Monte Carlo in his career and has previously said he expects to retire after the 2024 season.

“These are difficult times for me sportingly-speaking.

Unfortunately, I am not going to play in Monte Carlo. My body just won’t allow it,” Nadal wrote on X.

“And although I continue

working and trying my best every day with the hope of being able to compete in tournaments that have been very important to me, the reality is that today I cannot.

“I have no choice but to accept the situation and try to look towards the immediate future while maintaining hope and desire to give myself the opportunity for things to improve.”

Indestructibility of Living Arts Moneybags, Not ‘Moneybag’

Arts are a lifetime preoccupation. Imagine any professions that lure you to operate at your evocative height even at the age of 70, 80 and beyond. That is the grace almost exclusive to the creative concourses. Devotees of performative art forms are largely blessed with increasing acuity and flourishing temperament even as they age and endure. Outside of debilitating ill health or devastating physical disability, nothing else - sans Divine intervention - is able to stop the creative mind from adapting and cavorting to the demands and devotion that human creativity engenders.

Such is the grace of the truly talented and gifted acolytes of music, acting, and such expressive engagements. “Actor no dey die” is a mantra we associate with the inevitability of the performer’s indestructibility: we trust that he or she would return to us in another form, script and screen some other time, again, and again… ad infinitum.

That is why we return to the grotto of adulation every year on the 3rd of April to serenade one of the utopian offspring of the Muse who shares this space and moment with us: Ebenezer R mil kun Ar mu Olasupọ Fabiyi - the one we fondly call Chief Commander Ebenezer Obey!

Last year, when he turned 81, we were able to conscript him via modern tele-call technology to share his thoughts and reminiscences with us on our weekend radio show. So, I told my mother, ‘if that is all you want, I promise you, I would go to music, I would not smoke...I would not drink... I would not do all those things that scared you’. And my mother prayed for me.

“But one thing my mother didn’t tell me...she didn’t tell me about the temptations of ladies (all laugh)... She didn’t tell me that! When I entered music everything was going on fine for me... I kept my mother’s promise... but when the temptations came... (more paroxysms of laughter)

“God made the process of life for us to pass through experience. It is the most important thing in life… I refused to smoke hemp... I refused to take alcohol… everything my mother told me...

But there’s something in music... about the attraction of ladies... I don’t know how to explain it… All artistes will tell you about this issue... But God knew where He was taking me

to...so that for every mistake I made, God helped me to quickly be able to correct myself.

“I’m saying this to let our listeners know that the experience of life... God has planned it all.. He knew that we would go through all these experiences... So, in summary, God has a purpose for our lives...because He has a plan for us. And at the same time, the devil also wants to snatch us from God... It now depends on everyone… most especially, the yo unger ones, they must not allow the devil to snatch them away from God.”

It took his parents a few years to notice traces of musical robustness in him after his birth in 1942. Ebenezer Olasupo Fabiyi however, had to wait 16 years to start what has turned out to be a most illustrious career. He toiled with the “rave-ofthe-moment” Lagos bands of Ade Ade, Akibo Salvage and Fatai Rolling Dollars between 1958 and 1963.

Right after leaving Rolling Dollars and founding his own International Brothers Band, Obey released a delightful debut, Ewa Wo Ohun Oju Ri. From a repertoire in excess of 200 original compositions, Nigerians of the 20th and 21st centuries have been titillated by the sonorous philosophy and lingering didacticism of this Idogo, Ogun State born maestro. Almost 25 years ago (in late 1999 when he was aged 57) and at the dawn of the incoming millennium, I caused the following concluding statement to be published in a multi-entry series of articles dubbed ‘Millennial Mementos’: “As this century winds up with Obey-Fabiyi devoting his incredible talent to the ministry of God, we salute this astute businessman, devoted father and creator of Miliki music.”

Today, (akin to the Phoenix) in glorious fulfillment of those thoughts, and with massive admiration for an uncommon living legend, in the art and craft of knitting words, faith and fun in a musical contraption that keeps people of all tongues, tribes, creeds and strata on their feet, gyrating to the power and pungency of the invisible force of Juju music… we wish the ageless creative Commander, and iconic lamp holder of edifying minstrelsy… a benevolent and peaceful 82nd year on this side of the universe.

Long live the Chief Commander!

Long live the MFR…!

Hearty Felicitations!

Airpeace and the Isi Agu Controversy

Now, wasn’t that a really commendable move by Airpeace? “Something unique from Nigeria” is the message. The sewing and finishing of the outfit and the seamless, mature simplicity presents a uniqueness that is at once pleasant and compelling. Good taste, elegance and a firm bearing signposts the now-in-the- news outfit of Airpeace airhostesses on one of its international routes. Then, you have the graceful carriage of the wearers! Behold, the bold move of a Nigerian airline, as it inflicts a breath of Naijarama on the rest of the world.

And this is only a beginning. Other Nigerian varieties from Kano, the Kanuri, the Tiv, Akwete, Eko, Bini and much more should, and will yet, hit the international aviation superhighway.

Airpeace staff carried it off with a boldness and artistic self-certainty that stands out in bold relief. Think of the outfits of staff of other airlines, both local and international. What, for instance, confronts you in Ghana besides the “Akwaaba” greeting? Kente material is synonymous with that country, but let us get on with the business of the day.

Isi Agu means “Head of a leopard”. Is that what the Airpeace staff were seen wearing? Isi Odum means “head of a lion”. Is that what Airpeace staff were seen wearing? Come, let us go back to a piece which appeared on this page on April 15, 2023; wherein the Isi Agu matter was the subject of great concern and interest. The said piece will be reproduced here in large measure, to put the issue in perspective once again.

“Remember President Muhammadu Buhari’s visit to Imo State? The presumed Igbo garment he wore on top, which the state governor the then Ohaneze President-General and the “Igbo leaders and dignitaries” present also wore, is the issue here. To all Nigerians, and the world at large, the Igbo leadership elite turned up in Imo State, decked out in the traditional Igbo outfit of Efe Isi Agu, to receive Buhari on behalf of Ndigbo.

But were they really dressed in the right attire? I think not. And the reason is simple: The clothes they wore had the head of a lion (Odum) and not the head of a leopard (Agu) emblazoned on them. Thus, they saw themselves as wearing the traditional Igbo outfit for the highest possible occasion in the land on that occasion, when they were not. They would not have dressed the way they did if they knew better.

The point to note, and which is being made here, is that anyone parading the material that is routinely paraded everywhere today as the Igbo traditional attire, especially for men, should be told that Agu is not Odum, and Odum is not Agu. It is as simple as that. With the nascent, and even possibly pubescent, Igbo elite totally unaware of what they have walked themselves into, we now have about two generations of the young and old who do not know that Agu is not lion. Poor cultural education and the emergence of upstarts as

cultural and leadership icons in Igboland are to blame for this.

That is why, everywhere today, the predominantly red background of this unduly thick material, within and around which is embedded the head of a lion, is the major defining motif for Isi Agu dress. But then, you also now find the head of a horse, or a dog with a hairy head area, donning the red material. And these still get passed off as traditional Isi Agu dress. Who knows, we may yet find one with the head of a snake, a drowning fish, or a wounded porcupine, as Efe Isi Agu”.

The article under reference went further thus: Umahi wiped the subsisting shame of Igbo cultural bigwigs, intelligentsia, and political elite when he and his people wore the correct Isi Agu (leopard head) outfit to a rally of the APC held in his state. Igbo leadership, including Ohaneze chieftains, received Buhari in Owerri dressed in the wrong outfit of “Isi Odum” (Lion Head), which over 90% of the Igbo population actually assume is Isi Agu.

Look wherever you may, the story is the same. This goes for Ndigbo in the Diaspora, where the situation is much worse. Our dear brother and friend, Alex Oti, the man whom I believe will bring Abia State to its long overdue glory, has an official picture where he is seen donning the same material, with the head of a lion (Isi Odum). Oti is a double-rated lion in the business and intellectual circles in his own right. So, he may wish to substitute the Isi Odum with Isi Agu, to send out a signal that will guide his ailing and failing political and elite peers – as well as the youths.

But, wait a minute! Where, how and why did all this confusion spring up? If the word “isi” means head in Igbo language, does “Agu” mean the head of any and whatever animal you can print on a piece of cloth with red background? Certainly not!

And that raises a simple and straightforward

question: “Which animal’s head should be on the red background material for it to be rightly called Isi Agu dress; which would thus make it the authentic Igbo attire it is claimed to be? The confusion in this regard is further compounded by the fact that some men whose traditional title is “Ogbu Agu” (Leopard Killer) introduce themselves in public as “Lion Killer”, when translating the meaning of their title into the English language. Back then, what you found hanging on the wall of any man who bore the revered, and partly dreaded, title of Ogbu Agu was the skin of the leopard he killed.

I say nothing about the fact that Igboland now has many Ogbu Agus (leopard killers) who cannot kill a limping rat in their backyards. You also have many with the title of “Ochi Agha” (War leader, or General) who can neither defeat a sick man in a wrestling march, nor fire a catapult at a stationary object with anything but appalling inaccuracy.

In three particular instances, I saw the title “Agu Nze” (literally “Man of Heroic Integrity”) translated as “Royal Lion”. And this by people to whom the younger generation of Ndigbo are looking up for guidance. Therein lies a deep and serious problem that says more than is apparent at face value. So, let us place it on record that Agu is Leopard and not Lion. But, let us also still take this conversation further.

Every part of the world has its giant cat. The biggest of all cats is the Tiger (Panthera Tigris) of which the Siberian Tiger is said to be the largest, at 660 pounds and measuring ten feet from head to tail. We call the Lion “King of the Forest”. That cannot be true for every forest. Even for the forest in which the lion resides, it is not king of every part, like the rivers within the forest. In the latter, the crocodile is often the king – and a king dreaded by lions, hyenas, antelopes, buffalos and even elephants in the area.

The lion thrives best in semi-open plains, unlike the leopard; which is a climber and

stealth hunter. Even in its favorite habitat, the lion cannot hold the title of king if the tiger turns up. Thus, the lion is not the king of any forest where you have even one full-grown Asian Tiger.

Lions are only known for their exploits, extravagant show of dominance and frolicsome independence in the plains of Africa, parts of the Savannah, the Serengeti and other places. They do not thrive in marshlands and wet zones, which is what we have in the more southerly parts of the country, or our Rain Forest belt. Thus, the giant cat of the Rain Forest belt, also extending a little into the Savannah, is mostly the Leopard.

Lions were not common sights in the South East, but they were known and were seen when they strayed from the middle belt Savannah into the outskirts of the Rain Forest area from time to time. The Igbo saying “Odum na-egbu agu” (The lion is more powerful, and can demolish the leopard) is intended to induce caution in people who overrate themselves in one way or another. To further see the denotative and connotative nuances of the concept of Agu, among others, in Igbo thinking, let us examine a few things.

The crocodile is called Agu Iyi; which literally means “leopard of the river”; or the largest and most dangerous predator you can find in any body of water. Then there is another Agu, apart from the crocodile. That is the cunning Agu Owulu, or fox, the dreaded sneaky hunter with a lot of hair around the head area, which will snatch up your chicken in the dead of night with incredible stealth.

Let us look at another Igbo word and how it is sometimes used as a qualifier, the way agu is used as qualifier in an environment. The word “Ugbo Ala”, is translated as “car” in English. Air plane is translated as Ugbo Elu. Ugbo Nmiri is boat, ship or water going vessel. Then you have Ugbo Aja (the trough, or receptacle, with which you carry the offering, or sacrifice). So, what is the meaning of the word “Ugbo” itself? A receptacle, perhaps? A means of conveyance? That in which something is carried from one place to another?

Just as there is the ugbo for carrying people on land, on water and in the air, you also have the Agu, as the representation of daring, heroic courage and dominance in any environment. That is the basis of the Igbo saying “Ebube agu n-eche agu”, (the very aura, strength and agility of the leopard serves as its shield and protection)”.

So, going back to the Airpeace matter, let us simply acknowledge the wisdom of that move. It is one of many Nigerian trademarks that can be put out there. Now that another Nigerian airline has also gotten clearance to go global, we should expect another Nigerian-based outfits to hit the international aviation space.

Let’s have more. Kano, Kanuri, Efik, Tiv, Akwete, Eko, Bini and many others have much to project about us, as Nigerians. Lest we forget, the use of Asoebi (which I believe is of Yoruba traditional origin) for celebrations, knows no ethnic or religious boundaries in Nigeria today.
