Dangote Petroleum Refinery Commences Production Peter Uzoho Dangote Petroleum Refinery has commenced production of diesel and aviation fuel.

President of Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, elatedly thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his support, encouragement, and thoughtful advice towards the actualisation of this project.

Dangote also thanked the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Limited), the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) and Nigerians for their support and belief in the historic project.

“We thank President Bola Tinubu for his support and for making our dream come true. This production, as witnessed today, would not have been possible without his visionary leadership and prompt attention to details.

“His intervention at various stages cleared all impediments thereby

accelerating the actualisation of the project. We also thank the NNPC, NUPRC and NMDPRA for their support.

“These organisations have been our dependable partners in this historic journey. We also thank Nigerians for their belief and support in this project.

We have started the production of diesel and aviation fuel, and the products will be in the market within this month once we receive regulatory approvals.

We are delighted to have reached this significant milestone. This is an important achievement for our country as it demonstrates our ability to develop and deliver large capital projects. This is a game changer for our country, and I am very fulfilled with the actualisation of this project,” a statement yesterday, quoted Dangote to have said.

The refinery has so far received six million barrels of crude oil at its two SPMs located 25 kilometres from the shore. The first crude delivery was done on December 12, 2023, and the 6th cargo was delivered on

January 8, 2024.

The Refinery can load 2,900 trucks a day at its truck-loading gantries. The products from the Refinery would conform to Euro V specifications. The refinery design complies with the World Bank, US EPA, European emission norms, and Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) emission/effluent norms. Employing state-of-the-art technology.

IBB: I Tried to Make Gani Fawehinmi My Friend But Failed Sunday Ehigiator Former Military Head of State of Nigeria, General Ibrahim Babangida, has made a controversial revelation about his relationship with late civil rights lawyer and activist, Gani Fawehinmi, stating that during his tenure as Head of State, he employed all possible means to make the deceased his friend.

Babangida who said Fawehinmi was a good man, explained that

while his efforts failed, a friend of Fawehinmi and member of his ministerial cabinet, Mr. Alex Akinyele, also tried in vain to spark a friendship between them.

Making the disclosure during an interview on Channels Television yesterday, Babangida added that in the process of formulating many of his policies, he always queried members of his inner circle on the reaction he would receive from Fewehinmi.

Fawehinmi, a legal luminary and

one of the most loved Nigerian social activist until his demise, was one of the most outspoken critics of Babangida's government at the time and was detained no less than 17 times by Babangida's administration which ended in 1993.

Nigerians would remember the human rights lawyer for many things among which were his fierce commitment to upholding the ethics of social responsibility and his many acts of selfless service rendering

professional legal services to many of his clients for free.

According to Babangida, “He (Fawehinmi) is a good critic and he doesn’t want to be seen with someone that people already perceived as ‘an evil genius’.”

YOUR JUDGMENTS ON KANO, PLATEAU, ZAMFARA, PERVERSE, SUPREME COURT BLASTS A'COURT'S ELECTION PANELS Chuks Okocha, Alex Enumah, Adedayo Akinwale in Abuja Emmanuel Ugwu-Nwogo in Umuahia, Ahmad Sorondinki in Kano,Seriki Adinoyi in Jos, Okon Bassey in Uyo, Benjamin Nworie in Abakaliki The Supreme Court yesterday berated some justices of the Court of Appeal over the quality of their judgments in the governorship election petitions brought before them.

Delivering judgment in governorship appeals involving eight states of the federation, the apex court described as perverse the judgments of the appellate court that nullified the elections of governors of Kano, Plateau and Zamfara States.

In three separate judgments the appellate court justices had voided the election of Governors Abba Yusuf, Caleb Mutfwang and Dauda Lawal on grounds of alleged unlawful nomination and sponsorship and deduction of alleged illegal votes.

Justices of the apex court including John Okoro, Emmanuel Agim and Helen Ogunwumiju regretted that despite several decisions of the Supreme Court that tribunals and courts lacked the jurisdiction to dabble into the internal matters of political parties, some justices could still go ahead and sack a winner of an election on grounds of political parties' primaries, nomination or sponsorship.

Kano State Delivering judgment in the appeal

by Yusuf, a five-member panel of the apex court led by Justice John Okoro, in reversing the sack of the New Nigerian People's Party’s (NNPP) governor, held that the Court of Appeal was wrong in affirming the judgment of the tribunal which held that Yusuf did not win majority of lawful votes cast at the March election in Kano State.

The apex court in determining the case raised two issues: whether the lower court was right in deducting the 165,000 votes and whether the lower court was right in entertaining the issue of membership of political parties.

According to Justice Okoro, the tribunal was wrong in deducting votes accrued to Yusuf at the election on grounds that the ballot papers were not signed and stamped by officials of INEC. In addition, the court held that Section 71 of the Electoral Act relied upon by the lower court to deduct the alleged disputed votes does not apply in the instant case.

"The provision does not refer to any regulation or action at the polling units," he said, adding that the provision was to the exclusion of ballot papers.

Having so held the apex court went ahead to restore the deducted 165,616 votes to reinstate the victory of Yusuf at the governorship election.

"The decision of the trial court cannot stand, all the ballot papers are hereby restored", adding that the evidence did not show that the appellant interfered with the ballot papers not signed.

On the second issue, the apex court also faulted the Court of Appeal for holding that Yusuf was not a member of the NNPP as at the time he contested the election, adding that the issue of nomination and sponsorship were pre-election matter and outside the jurisdiction of the court.

Besides, Okoro observed that contrary to the appellate court, the tribunal never held that Yusuf was not qualified to contest the poll but that his name was not in the NNPP's membership register submitted to INEC. The apex court subsequently set aside the judgment of the two lower courts for being perverse and restored the electoral victory of Abba Yusuf.

INEC had declared Abba Yusuf of the NNPP winner of the March 18, 2023 governorship election in Kano State, having won majority of the lawful votes cast at the election.

But, the Kano State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal in a judgment in September last year, voided Yusuf election after it deducted over 160,000 votes accrued to the NNPP on the grounds that the ballot papers used for the poll were not signed and stamped by officials of the electoral umpire.

The deduction then gave Nasiru Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress (APC) the lead and was subsequently declared the duly elected governor of Kano State.

Besides affirming the judgment of the tribunal, the appellate court went ahead to void Yusuf's participation in the March 18 governorship election, which INEC declared winner on grounds of unlawful and illegal nomination and sponsorship.

Yusuf and the NNPP in their appeal had urged the apex court to set aside the two lower courts decisions because the tribunal erred in law when it deducted his over 160,000 votes on account of not been signed and stamped by INEC officials.

Besides, the appellants further faulted the judgment of the appellate court, arguing that the issue of nomination and sponsorship was a pre-election matter, which the appellate court lacked the jurisdiction to entertain.

They therefore urged the Supreme Court to nullify and set aside the concurrent judgments of the two lower courts and affirm his election as duly elected governor of Kano State.

Plateau State Similarly, the apex court also set aside the judgment of the Court of Appeal, which voided the election of Governor Mutfwang of Plateau state.

A five-member panel of the court reversed the decision of the appellate court for being perverse on the grounds that the issue of primary election that produced Mutfwang was outside the jurisdiction of the lower court.

Besides the apex court pointed out that the validity of nomination and sponsorship were not valid ground to void an election.

“The court of appeal lacked jurisdiction to entertain it", Agim said, stating that besides, the issue of sponsorship had elapsed long ago, as the law stipulates that a person challenging the nomination or sponsorship of a candidate for an election must institute the legal action within 14 days from which such illegality was said to have been made.

The apex court in addition explained that the petitioners not being members of the PDP have no locus to challenge the primary election of the PDP. "Since they are not members of the PDP, the tribunal and Court of Appeal have no right at all to look into the issue."

On the issue of whether the order of the Plateau State High Court could affect the National Executive Committee (NEC), the apex court held that the appellate court was wrong in holding that the order affects the NEC. Besides, Justice Agim stressed that the issue of primary was an internal matters of political parties which both the tribunal and Court of Appeal lacked jurisdiction.

Agim, also pointed out that contrary to the claim of the petitioners and the judgment of the appellate court the order of the Plateau High Court was not disobeyed by the PDP as evidence showed that a fresh primary was conducted.

Agim, warned the legal profession especially "the bar and bench to wake up," or else would soon render itself irrelevant.

"The judgment of the Court of Appeal is set aside, the election of the appellant is restored and the judgment of the tribunal affirming the election of the appellant is hereby affirmed,” he added.

Meanwhile, Presiding Justice, Okoro also reacting, lamented that, "a lot of people have suffered" because of the wrongful judgments of the appellate court which had sacked several legislators who won elections under the platform of the PDP. Justice Helen Ogunwumiju also berated the appellate court for going

into the issue of nomination and sponsorship despite several decisions of the apex court to the effect that a political party cannot challenge the primary election of another.

INEC had on March 20, 2023, declared Caleb Mutfwang of the PDP as the winner of the Plateau governorship election after he scored 525,299 votes, against the 481,370 votes of the APC and its candidate, Nentawe Goshwe.

In its judgment in last September the three-member panel of the Plateau tribunal had affirmed Mutfwang's election and dismissed Goshwe's petition for being incompetent and lacking in merit.

Not satisfied the petitioners proceeded to the appellate court where the three panel voided the judgment of the tribunal and ordered the sack of Mutfwang as governor on grounds of illegal nomination.

The appellate court had agreed with the appellants that the primary election that produced Mutfwang as candidate of the PDP was illegal, unlawful and constituted in violation of a court order.

The appellate court subsequently ordered INEC to issue a fresh Certificate of Return to Goshwe after withdrawing the earlier one issued to Mutfwang.

Dissatisfied, Mutfwang had approached the apex court to set aside the judgment of the appellate court on grounds that the issue of qualification was a pre-election matter, adding that the party did not at any time violated the order of court regarding organising fresh congress.

Zamfara Like Kano and Plateau, the apex court also restored the election victory of Dauda Lawal at the March 18 governorship election in Zamfara State for not being in tandem with the law.

Delivering judgment in the appeal by Lawal, Justice Agim, who delivered the lead judgment held that the judgment of the appellate court which nullified the judgment of the tribunal that affirmed election of Lawal as governor was perverse and ought to be set aside.

"The judgment of the Court of Appeal have no evidential foundation and it is hereby set aside. The order setting aside the judgment of the tribunal and order for fresh election are hereby set aside.

"The judgment of the tribunal dismissing the petition of the petitioners for lacking merit is hereby affirmed," Justice Agim held.

According to the judgment the petitioners never provided sufficient evidence to prove allegations of irregularities non-compliance, corrupt practices, adding that petitioners failed

to call relevant witnesses such as polling agents, party agents or people who witnessed the election.

Besides, the apex court pointed out that relevant materials like the BVAS, voter register, forms EC40G amongst others were also not presented before the court to prove petitioners case.

INEC had declared Lawal of the PDP governor haven scored a total of 377,726 votes to defeat then incumbent governor Matawalle who scored 311,976 votes. Lawal's election was also affirmed by the Zamfara Election Petitions Tribunal last September, after dismissing Matawalle's petition for being incompetent and lacking in merit.

Besides the tribunal awarded a sum of N500, 000 fine against the petitioners for filing the petition.

However, a three-member panel of the Court of Appeal led by Justice Oyebisi Folayemi, nullified the return of Governor Lawal as the winner of the governorship poll.

Justice Sybil Nwaka had ordered INEC to conduct a fresh election in three local government areas of the state, where elections had not been held previously or where results from various polling units were not counted.

Dissatisfied Lawal had approached the apex court to set aside the judgment of the appellate court and affirm the judgment of the tribunal which affirmed his victory at the poll.

Lagos, Bauchi, Ebonyi, Abia, Cross River Meanwhile, the apex court affirmed the elections of the governors of Lagos, Bauchi, Ebonyi, Abia and Cross River States.

The apex court affirmed the elections after dismissing the appeals against them for being incompetent and lacking in merit.

The apex court held that it found no cogent reason to deviate from the concurrent judgments of the tribunal and Court of Appeal which held that they were lawfully elected as governors.

Reacting to the development, constitutional lawyer and rights activist, Professor Mike Ozekhome, called for a review of the law that restricted National and states houses of assembly elections to the Court of Appeal.

Ozekhome who pointed out that the judgments of the apex court faulting the decisions of the appellate court on the 2023 general elections have vindicated him over his call for reforms in the judiciary, He lamented the fate of the legislators who lost out because their case ended at the appellate court and was not privileged to get the wrongful judgments against them reversed.

The Appeal Court had sacked legislators of the PDP on account that

they emerged from a faulty primary held in disobedience of an order of the Plateau State High Court.

However, the Supreme Court in its judgment held that the appellate court was wrong to have looked into how they were sponsored by the PDP, adding that the order of the State High Court which they had anchored their decision was made outside jurisdiction and therefore of no consequences.

Besides, the apex court added that evidence before it showed that the said order of the High Court was complied with when the PDP went to conduct a fresh election.

Otti Restates Resolve to Make Abia Excel Reacting to the Supreme Court ruling, Abia State Governor, Mr. Alex Otti, yesterday, reiterated his commitment to make the State take its rightful place among the best states in Nigeria and beyond.

Speaking at a press conference at his Nvosi country home, following the affirmation of his mandate by the Supreme Court in Abuja, Otti said good governance has come to stay in Abia.

He assured Abians that he would work to restore their dignity and make them proud of their God's own state.

Otti, who has apparently heaved a sigh of relief, expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu "for remaining firm to the resolve that the judiciary should be independent."

He noted that by making good his promise not to interfere in the affairs of the judiciary, the President has engendered positive outcomes in the country.

"If he (Tinubu) did not do that, perhaps, some of the judgments and verdicts that were given today may have been different," Otti said.

"I want to encourage him to continue in that light. I believe that his non-intervention in the judiciary has produced positive results in the country today.”

The Abia governor, stated that, "because the rule of law has prevailed, people who were getting ready to burn down some places have been compelled to sheathe their swords."

He lauded the judiciary for standing firm against the sinister plots of "desperate politicians" to thwart the will of the people, thereby proving that it remained the last hope of the common man.

Having faced a hot challenge by hid opponents, Otti gave kind words to all the governorship candidates that did not drag him to court, saying that they have been supportive.

He said: "I want to invite everyone including my opponents who were in court with me to say now that the battle is over, you have no choice but to sheathe your sword.

He said: “We have a big marine economy, and I do not see why we should not have the marine police. We will have the same in solid minerals to keep the scavengers away. I am ready to invest in security. We will buy our own minerals and keep them in reserves, especially gold, which will be effective in our foreign exchange reserve."

He also used the opportunity to

implore governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to design and implement policies that prioritise all Nigerians and to always consider the national interest above political affiliations.

The President said development policies would only find full relevance in people’s lives when there is inclusivity, ownership, and sustainability.

Tinubu told the governors that

one of the biggest challenges the nation faces is divisiveness, but that the governing party must work towards healing and unifying the country by ensuring a collective national vision, and channelling energy and resources into nationbuilding.

Shettima: National Philanthropic Office Will Be Huge Success Under Tinubu Inaugurates NPO local implementation committee

Vice President Kashim Shettima has given an assurance that the success and positive impact of the newly established National Philanthropic Office (NPO) was guaranteed under the President Bola Tinubu administration.

According to him, the President has been a firm believer in giving back to society and as such, his enduring spirit of bettering the lot of the citizens is enough guarantee for the NPO to make a huge success and impact.

Shettima disclosed this yesterday, at the inauguration of the Local Implementation Committee of the National Philanthropic Office (NPO) at the Banquet Hall of the State House, Abuja.

The NPO, an initiative driven 100 percent by the private sector, with full support from the government, is part of efforts by the Tinubu-led federal government to raise alternative funding for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMSEs) and other vital economic programmes through collaboration with the private sector.

The office is saddled with the

responsibility of ensuring the establishment of 12 industrial value-chain hubs and accelerators for startups and small businesses across the six geopolitical zones in Nigeria.

Delivering his speech titled, "Philanthropy and Our Shared Responsibilities," during the inauguration of the Local Implementation Committee of the NPO, Vice President Shettima disclosed that the NPO is set to raise $200 million in grants and non-financial investment through local and international teams to provide support for start-ups in key sectors of the country's MSMEs space.

According to him, "this initiative proposes to raise $200m in grants and non-financial investment, through local and international teams, to provide support to start-ups in the key sectors within the MSMEs space that drive job creation in Nigeria".

The development was conveyed in a letter by the Managing Director of MOFI, Dr. Armstrong Takang, a copy of which was obtained by THISDAY yesterday. The letter captioned, "Re: Equity Holdings of the Federal Government of Nigeria in Electricity Distribution Companies," was addressed to the Chairman, Board of Directors of the Electricity Successor Companies and was copied to the Vice President, Kashim Shettima, who is the Chairman of the National Council on Privatisation (NCP); as well as the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun and the 11 respective Discos.

In the letter, the MOFI CEO directed that the BPE nominees on the board of directors of this Discos be withdrawn with immediate effect, and share certificates issued in the name of the privatisation agency immediately withdrawn and cancelled He recalled that by virtue of the statutory mandate in Section 9 of the now repealed Electric Power Sector Reform Act, 2005, the BPE had been the holder of record of the equity interests of the Federal Government of Nigeria in the Discos.

According to him, in this regard, since the privatisation of the Discos was completed

on November 1, 2013, BPE had nominated various persons to be directors and managed the implementation of the various rights and obligations of the FGN in the company.

Also, under a Power of Attorney (PoA) granted by the Minister of Finance in 2012, Takang explained that the BPE was appointed the lawful attorney of the MOFI to implement the decision of the National Council on Privatisation (NCP) to privatise the Discos via a sale of shares.

He noted that the responsibility thereby conferred by the finance minister was subsequently completed with the successful privatisation of November 2013.

Nigeria, Benin, Niger, Others Pledge to Deliver on 913km West Africa Power Project Emmanuel Addeh in Abuja Members of the West Africa Power Pool (WAPP) project yesterday vowed to deliver on the 913-kilometre electricity project expected to span 14 West African countries.

The members include: Benin, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, The Gambia, Togo, Senegal, and Sierra Leone.

Chairman of WAPP, Sule Abdulaziz, who is also the Chief Executive Officer of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), while speaking at the 7th joint supervision committee meeting in Abuja,

stated that the project would redefine the region’s energy landscape when completed.

The regional interconnection initiative, encompassing the construction of 880 km of 330 kV and 33 km of 225 kV high voltage transmission lines, Abdulaziz said, will catalyse efficient energy trade, encourage commercial exchange agreements, and bring electricity access to communities along the transmission line.

“It stands at the forefront of a multifaceted effort to break the shackles of energy poverty and elevate the living standards of our communities.

Beyond being a paradigm shift on how we approach power

generation and distribution.

It is a lifeline for those living in areas with limited or no electricity access.

“This visionary initiative prioritises underserved regions, aiming to bridge the gap in electricity access. It's about bringing power to schools, clinics, and businesses that have long operated in the shadow of energy scarcity.

“The North Core Project is a beacon of hope for these communities, unlocking their full potential, and promising not only a reliable power supply but also a catalyst for socioeconomic progress,” he stated.

According to him, the goal is to ensure that the North Core Project delivers on its promise of reliable, sustainable, and affordable electricity for the people of the region.

“It's a colossal task, but it's one that we are well-equipped to handle, armed with collective wisdom and a commitment to progress,” the TCN CEO added.

In his remarks, WAPP Secretary General, Siengui Ki, said the North Core Project had recorded significant progress, with the foundation, assembly, and lifting works for the lines having commenced, while fencing and levelling of substation sites were in progress.

Lagos Catholic Archbishop Seeks End to Killings, Urges Govts to Tackle Corruption Ferdinand Ekechukwu The Catholic Archbishop of Lagos Diocese, Most. Rev. Alfred Adewale Martins, has attributed the myriad of challenges facing the country to leadership problem.

The clergy, while speaking in an exclusive interview with THISDAY, in Lagos, highlighted the danger of corruption, inefficiency and lack of transparency to any society.

He stressed the need for leadership to address the issue of good

governance by leading people in the right direction and make the required sacrifices for the nation.

Archbishop Martins said there was need for the political will to deal with inappropriate use of government resources.

According to him, lack of transparency on the part of leaders cast doubts upon the shared aspiration for peaceful co-existence.

“Leaders are supposed to lead by example in directing people towards that which is best, the practices

which are best, to attain common good. In other words, leaders who expect the followers to make sacrifices in other that goals be achieved must lead by example.

“As it were today, the economy is in a very bad shape; there is hardly money for people to do their normal things. Even for a sick person to buy drugs, simple malaria drugs and the rest of them are becoming more and more difficult. Yes, sacrifices are supposed to be made. But I believe the leadership also has a

responsibility of making sacrifices to the people,” he added.

Speaking on the killings in some parts of the country, especially Plateau State, he said, “The way things are now, seems to me we are going towards the precipice again as a nation. And unless we decide to begin to do things differently, than we have been doing, we will talk and talk about the killings that are going on all over the country at this point in time.

“The fact that those killings

happened and there are no consequences that anybody can point at is gradually driving people to the edge. And I believe that as we are beginning to see peaceful demonstrations going on, for example in Plateau State, if this is not taken seriously, very soon, people will begin to take laws into their hands.”

Komolafe Seeks Police Support to End Oil Theft in N’Delta Emmanuel Addeh in Abuja The Chief Executive of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), Gbenga Komolafe, has said that enhanced collaboration with the police in Nigeria was necessary in the country's efforts to curb oil theft.

Edo Seals Deal for State-wide Deployment of Electric Buses, devt of 175MW Wind Energy The Edo State Government has entered a new partnership with leading renewable energy company, Oando Clean Energy Limited, for the deployment of electric buses to enhance the State's transportation system.

This is just as the state government also sealed a deal for a wind energy project with a capacity of 175 Megawatts.

The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Edo State Government and Oando clean energy took place at the Government House in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

Obaseki, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Osarodion Ogie, said the state government was committed to giving every community in the state access to clean energy.

According to him, “Clean energy is here to stay. We are happy to be one of the front runners among other states.

“We have found a partner in Oando Energy. We are happy, and we will make sure that we keep our side of the agreement.”

The Edo State Commissioner for Mining and Energy, Dr. Ojeifoh Enaholo, said the electric

bus scheme which will be rolled out in phases will commence with five buses for the take-off phase, while the wind energy project will also commence with a pilot scheme in a bid to revolutionise the electricity sector in the state.

The Commissioner noted that charging stations for the vehicle batteries would be installed with all necessary facilities.

According to him, the projects were part of the quick wins and finishing strong projects of the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration to support the existing structure in the area of power generation.

University of Kigali Appoints Ogechi Adeola as DVC The Governing Body of the University of Kigali (UoK) has appointed Prof. Ogechi Adeola, a Professor of Marketing, as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor – Academic (DVCA), effective January 11, 2024.

Adeola holds a Doctorate in Business Administration and a Master of Business Administration from Alliance Manchester Business School, United Kingdom.

Bouyer, according to the statement, affirmed that the company has an outstanding track record in Nigeria and has developed key oil and gas projects in the last 10 years.

Some of the projects, he explained, were in deep water, as well as shallow water, adding that they created Nigerian Content

"We recommend them for removal from the scheme and we have reported them to the appropriate authority for the discipline and punishment they deserved. We found out that they received money and they will not prepare meals for our school pupils.

"Some of them are also not doing it in line with the guidelines. All these things, we have our report and we have given appropriate punishment. We have also made arrest of some people who commit fraud in the various local governments concerning other interventions from the government to cushion the hardship in our country.

Jan.15 and Unity of Ex-Servicemen

anuary 15, Armed Forces Remembrance Day, is a day set aside by the federal government for Nigerians to remember their fallen heroes.

Members of the armed forces, through pre-independence, during the civil war to ECOMOG and AU, are making supreme sacrifices. Nigerians should not forget their efforts in making sure we sleep with our two eyes closed. Thus we should reciprocate to ensure the families they left behind are taken care of by the Nigerian Legion which is the umbrella body that oversees the welfare of all ex-servicemen.

The Nigerian Legion is the only statutorily recognized body that oversees the welfare, enhance and speak on behalf of ex-servicemen.

Established since 1964, the Nigerian Legion has, through the Act establishing it, Section 11, provides that federal government should fund it but unfortunately nothing has been done.

Funding is a huge challenge. There has been no take-off grant, so funding is required to be provided by way of annual budgetary provision so that there could be impact on the lives of military widows, orphans, retirees and dependants. The Act establishing the Nigerian Legion has made it possible to establish legitimate businesses through which funds could be realized.

This underscores the relevance of funding.

It is in the light of this that we have put up a request through the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to enable the Nigerian Legion to set up a Microfinance Bank that would allow its members access soft loans that would be devoid of the usual commercial banks encumbrances.

This would greatly assist our members.

The Legion also wishes to establish a trauma centre for the treatment of its members who are affected by post- traumatic stress disorders.

A seed fund is required to address the funding challenge; this will eliminate the need to go cap in hand periodically to ask for donation from the general public through the sale of emblems.

Patronizing our emblems is a way of responding to our consciences to donate to those who put their lives in the line for you and I. Monies realised from sale of emblems are barely enough to cover even the overhead costs of the Legion with its 36 state chapters and the FCT. Though the Nigerian Legion is the only

statutorily recognized body of ex-servicemen, this is without prejudice to the right of individuals to form associations, but we should not sow the embers of disunity. There are about 15 other association of veterans, they each operate within their articles of operation. Some of these operate as if they’re labour unions devoid of the discipline that the military is known for.

Such unpatriotic individuals by calling for picketing through uncivilized manner or carrying of placards are exploiting the sentiments of the junior ranks in the military through misinformation about security debarment allowance.

Thus, there is the need to review the activities of the Nigerian Legion, hence the bill seeking to establish the Veterans Federation of Nigeria (VFN) would soon be sent before the National Assembly. And a database will soon be set up in order to assess the number of ex-servicemen in Nigeria. A remembrance emblem had earlier been launched by President Bola Tinubu which signifies an appeal to Nigerians to donate generously to the fallen heroes in order to take care of their orphans and widows.

According to the announcer, people should send the evidence of payment to this Whatsapp number+2349071587096. Advocates have called the number to confirm this event, but the organiser is not answering calls.

The public is warned not to participate in the event or patronize this fraudster and others who prey on desperate, vulnerable, and gullible folks. The Nigerian public should realize that there is nothing like spiritual spouses. This claim is utter nonsense. To have a spiritual spouse implies that there is a spiritual marriage. Is that not absurd?

These charlatans attribute family problems, including health issues, to spiritual attacks. And as in this case, they ask the people with these ‘spiritual challenges’ to pay huge sums of money for prayers and exorcism. Many pastors and other self-styled men and women of God are notorious for instilling fears and fleecing individuals and communities in the name of delivering them from spiritual spouses or for neutralizing spiritual attacks.

The waste disposal crisis, which has been ongoing for months, is not only an aesthetic problem but also a health and environmental hazard. The piles of garbage, which ȱ ¢ ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ Ĵ ǰȱ ȱ ȱ ¢ȱ ¢ǰȱ ȱ ¢ȱ ȱ ȱ ȱę ȱ ǯȱ ¢ǰȱ ȱ ȱ ȱ Ĵ ȱ ȱ ȱ ǰȱ which could pose a threat to nearby residents.

Some residents have taken to burning the garbage in an attempt to reduce the waste, but this has resulted in toxic fumes and smoke billowing through the air. The burning also poses a risk of fire spreading to nearby homes and businesses. Besides, the burning of plastic and other non-biodegradable materials is releasing harmful toxins into the air and water which can have long-term consequences for the local ecosystem. In addition, the burning is depleting the region’s already limited supply of clean water. The combined effect of these factors will create a serious environmental problem in the area.

President Bola Tinubu has approved the sum of N683, 429,268 billion as the 2024 Intervention Funds for public tertiary education institutions in the country.

Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Sonny Echono, disclosed this yesterday, during the Fund’s strategic planning meeting with heads of beneficiary-institutions in Abuja.

He also disclosed that each university shall get for 2024 intervention cycle, a total sum of N1,906,944,930.00, each Polytechnic N1,165,355,235.00 while each College of Education

shall get N1,398,426,282.00.

So far, this year’s intervention witnessed a boost as compared to last year's, which saw the disbursement of over N320 billion.

It would be recalled that the 2023 intervention cycle saw each university receiving N1,154,732,133.00; Polytechnic

– N699,344,867.00, while each College of Education got N800,862,602.

The Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Ola Olukoyede has vowed to revisit the probe leveled against the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Mattawalle over alleged N70 billion money laundering while he was Governor of Zamfara State.

Olukoyede, made this known in Abuja yesterday through the Commission's Acting Director of Public Affairs, Wilson Uwujaren, who spoke to the media, following a protest by Zamfara Alternative Forum at the EFCC Headquarters.

The Zamfara Alternative Forum had stormed the Commission's Headquarters yesterday in protest, urging the EFCC to revisit the probe of Matawalle over his alleged N70 billion money laundering during his tenure as the Governor of Zamfara State.

Speaking during the protest, the group's spokesperson, Mahmud Abubakar said, "The Zamfara Alternative Forum urges the EFCC to resume its investigation of former governor Bello Matawalle over the N70 billion fraud uncovered by the commission during his tenure as governor of Zamfara State.

American Multinational, BlackRock Acquires Ogunlesi's Global Infrastructure Partners for $12.5bn Deal to make GIP one of world's biggest infrastructure investors Company appoints Ogunlesi into board Peter Uzoho American multinational, BlackRock Inc. has acquired Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP), a leading independent infrastructure fund manager owned by Nigeria's Adebayo Ogunlesi, for about $12.5 billion.

The transaction has created a world leading infrastructure private market investment platform.

According to a joint statement issued yesterday, BlackRock will pay $3 billion in cash and about 12 million shares, worth about $9.5 billion at Thursday’s close, and the deal is expected to close in the third quarter of 2024.

The deal has launched BlackRock, the world’s biggest money manager, into the top ranks of investors that make long-term bets on energy, transportation and digital infrastructure. GIP manages $100 billion.

The deal is also expected to make GIP one of the world's biggest infrastructure investors.

However, subject to completion of customary onboarding procedures, BlackRock has agreed to appoint Ogunlesi, who is currently the Founding Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of GIP into its board at the next regularly scheduled board meeting following the closing of the transaction.

Afreximbank Confirms Initial Release of $2.25bn from NNPC’s $3.3bn Crude Prepayment Loan Emmanuel Addeh in Abuja The African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), a pan-African multilateral financial institution, yesterday confirmed the disbursement of an initial $2.25 billion under a syndicated $3.3 billion crude oil prepayment facility sponsored by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC).

In August last year, the NNPC said it had secured the crude oil repayment loan from the Cairobased bank that will support the government's reforms to stabilise the exchange rate market.

Describing it as "relief for the naira", the NNPC had announced that the loan will “immediately” see the disbursement of funds to support the government in its ongoing fiscal and monetary policy reforms.

But in a statement, the bank described it as a landmark financing agreement, stressing that it is the largest syndicated loan ever raised by Nigeria in the international market and one of the largest syndicated debts raised in Africa in recent years.

The facility, the Prof Benedict Oramah-led bank said, will enhance Nigeria’s macroeconomic stability and long-term economic growth, while enabling access to raw materials and trade development efforts.

According to AfreximBank, raising such a significant amount at year end when many financiers were closing their books represented a vote of confidence on Nigeria and Africa.

“African Export-Import Bank has successfully arranged a syndicated $3.3 billion crude oil prepayment facility sponsored by the NNPC. An initial disbursement of $2.25 billion has been made. A second tranche

of $1.05 billion is expected to be disbursed subsequently.

“This landmark financing is Nigeria's largest crude oil prepayment facility and one of the largest syndicated loans raised in Africa in 2023,” it added.

AfreximBank stated that investors were keen to consider ticket sizes of $250 million and $500 million amid current headwinds and year-end pressures in the loan markets.

The five-year facility, it said, carries a margin of 6.0 per cent per annum above the three-month Secured Overnight Financing Rate (SOFR).

“The transaction structure has an embedded price balance mechanism where 90 per cent of all excess cash from the sale of the committed barrels (after debt service) will be released.

“The balance of 10 per cent will be used to prepay the facility, effectively shortening the final maturity of the facility and freeing cash flow from future pledged cargoes for use by Nigeria,” it stated.

It listed the initial participating lenders as Afreximbank, Africa’s multilateral trade finance institution, Gunvor International BV, a Genevabased multinational energy and commodities trading company and Sahara Energy Resources Limited, an African-owned, leading international energy and infrastructure conglomerate.

Afreximbank said its extensive structuring and technical experience in arranging similar complex oil & gas financing facilities in Angola, Republic of Congo, South Sudan, Chad Egypt, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, among others, was brought to bear in the successful closure of the facility, notwithstanding a very challenging market environment.

Also, Ogunlesi, a former Credit Suisse executive and one of the founding partners at GIP's management team, has also been appointed to lead the combined, highly complementary infrastructure platform.

The GIP is the world’s largest independent infrastructure manager with over $100 billion in AUM and a strong reputation for driving operational improvements in its portfolio companies and proprietary origination.

The transaction, the statement explained, created a market-leading, multi-asset class infrastructure investing platform with combined client AUM of over $150 billion across equity, debt and solutions and strengthened deal flow and co-investment opportunities.

The statement added that the transaction was structured for leadership continuity and alignment with BlackRock’s stockholders, with a substantial majority of total consideration to be paid in

BlackRock stock.

A $1 trillion market today, infrastructure had been forecast to be one of the fastest growing segments of private markets in the years ahead. A number of long-term structural trends support an acceleration in infrastructure investment.

These include increasing global demand for upgraded digital infrastructure like fiber broadband, cell towers and data centers; renewed investment in logistical hubs such as airports, railroads and shipping ports as supply chains are rewired; and a movement toward decarbonisation and energy security in many parts of the world.

Further, large government deficits mean that the mobilisation of capital through public-private partnerships will be critical for funding important infrastructure.

Tinubu Suspends National Social Investment Programme Olawale Ajimotokan in Abuja President Bola Tinubu has suspended all programmes administered by the National Social Investment Programme Agency (NSIPA).

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) Senator George Akume said this yesterday in a statement signed on his behalf by the Director Information, OSGF, Segun Imohiosen.

He said the suspension

was further to the ongoing investigation of alleged malfeasance in the management of the agency and its programmes.

He stated that all the four programmes administered by NSIPA, including; N- Power Programme, Conditional Cash Transfer Programme, Government Enterprise and Empowerment Programme and Home Grown School Feeding Programme have been suspended for a period of six weeks in the first instance.

"President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has also raised significant concerns regarding operational lapses and improprieties surrounding payments to the programmes' beneficiaries.

"He has therefore constituted a ministerial panel to conduct a thorough review of the Agency's operations with a view to recommending necessary reforms of the NSIPA," the statement added According to Akume, during the period of this suspension,

all NSIPA-related activities, including but not limited to all distributions, events, payments, collaborations and registrations are now frozen.

"The President wishes to assure the stakeholders and all Nigerians that his administration remains committed to a swift and unbiased process that will ensure that, going forward, social intervention programmes will work exactly as intended, to the benefit of the most vulnerable Nigerians," he said.

Tompolo's Firm, Tantita Arrests Vessel with Stolen Crude Oil in Bayelsa

The private security firm contracted by the federal government in the fight against crude oil theft, Tantita Security Services Limited (TSSL) has arrested another ocean going vessel with thousands of metric tonnes of stolen crude oil Offshore Bayelsa State.

The vessel named MT Kally was apprehended by a joint operation by the officials of TSSL, owned by a former militant commander in the Niger Delta, Chief Government Ekpemupolo, alias Tompolo and men of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).

THISDAY gathered last night that the vessel was arrested barely

24 hours after the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla launched "Operations Delta Sanity" in Warri, an exercise aimed at checkmating crude oil theft and maritime criminal activities in the Niger Delta region It was learnt the arrested vessel had been anchored at an NNPCL location in Oporoza in Warri South West Local Government area of Delta State.

Sources said the crew of the vessel and their local accomplices were allegedly loading loading illegally crude oil from Offshore Sokebolou field in Bayelsa when they were caught by operatives of Tantita in conjunction with the

NSCDC personnel.

According to the security sources, preliminary investigations indicated that the first manifold of the vessel was been filled before the intervention of the security agents.

It was further gathered that the management of the TSSL had intimated the National Security Advisor, Mallam Shehu Ribadu and the Management of the NNPCL with the arrest.

From a video clip received by THISDAY, the Captain and Engineer of the vessel, Adeboye David and Promise Eze, and some of their accomplices, who were members of some oil communities in Bayelsa state, were kept on board the vessel

further investigation into the incident.

Adeboye and Eze, who were interrogated of officials of TSSL in the video said the vessel was hired from Lagos to load crude oil illegal from Offshore locations in Bayelsa State.

They said they departed Lagos State for the job following assurances from their boss, whom they refused to identified and that all security agencies had given him (Boss) assurances of an unfettered access to the manifold.

Director of Operations of TSSL, Captain Warredi Enisuoh, confirmed the arrest of the vessel and the crew members as well as local accomplices.

Bringing this into realisation could be initiated through investment in incubation centres, in each state (dispersed based on the requirements and geographical advantages of the state); preparing one-unit warehouses of approximately 5,000sqm per cluster, having 10,000 of each unit/micro industry in each state including the federal capital territory, Abuja. Leveraging on international connections In addition to the above, Nigerian government can invite specialists and international machine manufacturers from China, India, among others, to train our graduates in vocational skills and provide crucial technology transfer through the sale of machineries and equipment for daily need products in exchange for local minerals via the use of a barter trading system. By opting to further facilitate local manufacturing of products, the government can consider onward sales of the above-mentioned machines to the youth on a long-term basis. The government should protect our industries by imposing strict prohibitions of imports and policing the markets to enforce the ban on importation. With these, I believe we can conserve our precious foreign exchange, increase the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and strengthen our local markets and producers.

Effects of improved electricity on youths and existing industries Power supply should be made available to our youths and other existing industries. If small-scale factories could work without generators, it would solve the majority of the country’s crippling problems. Requiring each unit to adhere to contemporary demands of sustainability, preservation of natural capital and utilisation of renewable energy will ensure longevity and create backups to the national grid power supply. Incorporating training to pre-empt and prevent environmental degradation and learning from the case of China. This will provide practical experience that would give our youth a strong sense of belonging, and a promise of hope. It is our duty as Nigerian seniors to help our youth the truth to know.

Thoughts on wealth creation and urban migration Ultimately, promoting urbanisation in the rural areas of the country and stemming rural-to- urban migration by wealth creation in our rural communities will prevent overcrowding in urban areas.

Keeping our youths off the streets by encouraging them to get housing and job opportunities. We need to instill a sense of pride and dignity through respectable labour in our youth. The creation of varied and sustainable industrial cities will be pivotal in the national stimulation of progress. All this could be financed in the government budget with the aid of private sector investment schemes and the youth could be required to pay back within 10 to 25 years, and enjoy grants to support them. This will unleash and enable patient capital required to catalyse economic growth, jobs and entrepreneurship for our youths.

Better to light the candle than curse the darkness. Give light and the darkness will disappear. This vision enacted would enable us have a better Nigeria.

To ensure the success of this proposed economic remedy, Nigeria, the economic powerhouse of Africa should embrace a propensity of population utilisation, to supercharge the entire African continent. I believe more technical details and possibilities have to be discussed on the above ideas.

y position was straightforward: since we were on police bail from the same Milverton, and had visited their offices many times after the bail without problems, they knew our office, houses, telephone numbers and even pager numbers (this was years before GSM); there was no need for another invitation. They could just call or page (remember the pager of the mid 90s?), and we’d be there, if there was no mischief in the bakery. Thirdly, and more importantly, after concluding their investigations, the police had arraigned us before the Chief Magistrate at Igbosere (Lagos Island) on a five-count charge, and we have been granted bail by Chief Magistrate Kotun (Court 1).

Moreover, we had been attending proceedings at all times, until the complainant (FAME) wrote to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) asking that the matter be moved to a higher court, and the proceedings were suspended until the DPP’s further advice. Even then, the case had always been mentioned, and we (my former partner and I) were always attending. In fact, the next adjourned date [was] later that month, (and by the Special Grace of God, we would be there).

These reasons provoked me to be on the side of anxiety for my safety. And of course, my entire family was around to witness the naked show of power. And mischief. Well, I refused to see them, and they refused to go without seeing me.

ON MY HONOUR: After over two hours of waiting for my lawyer (Mike had already gone to make the telephone call down the road; incidentally, our line chose that day to pack up), and arguing to and fro, the dark Hausa-looking man who obviously was the leader (he told me he is called Dutse) brokered a truce: asked me to sign an undertaking that I would be at their office the following day. Enugu 2023: Time for Edeoga to Move On Lawrence Madu

I

n September, I published an article, which I titled “Valid Reasons Why Ndi Enugu Rejected Edeoga.” I highlighted reasons the Labour Party (LP) governorship candidate in Enugu State during the 2023 election cycle lost to Dr. Peter Mbah of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who emerged governor. That intervention, which was spurred by the misinformation and poorly reasoned arguments churned out by Edeoga’s supporters, was supposed to be my last on the subject of that governorship election. The number of calls and messages I received in regard also affirmed to me that the issue of the 2023 governorship election in Enugu State was sufficiently and convincingly addressed in that article. The Court of Appeal and Supreme Court validated my arguments as it concerns the law and conduct of elections.

Is Edeoga entitled to contest the outcome of the Enugu 2023 governorship election? Yes, of course; and he has exercised it to the fullest, pursuing his case up to the Supreme Court, the highest court of the land. In fact, even when he committed his matter to the jurisdiction of the court, Edeoga and his minions didn’t refrain from inflammatory and fallacious statements and claims on a matter that was sub judice. And he is a lawyer. But one should have expected him to know that there is always an end to every process and that with the Supreme Court ruling affirming Mbah’s election, the curtain effectively dropped on the Enugu 2023 governorship contest.

But Edeoga and his party’s national chairman, Julius Abure, a lawyer also, would have none of that. Only this week, they regaled Nigerians with how Edeoga supposedly won the Enugu election but was purportedly rigged out and how the Election Petition Tribunal, Court of Appeal, and Supreme Court allegedly denied him justice. This is so unbecoming and makes it imperative to remind Edeoga and his party why they failed in that election.

The truth is that the odds were highly staked against Edeoga in that election. Forget about the fact that the Peter Obi tsunami ferried some political nobodies and neverdo-wells to victory in the February 25 National Assembly elections, gifting LP in Enugu with eight out of the seven National Assembly seats (with three now upturned by the court) and two out of the three senatorial seats. While I shall return to this much later in this piece, it needs to be stated unequivocally that the dynamics and sentiments that underlined the presidential and National Assembly elections on 25th February, 2023 were quite different from those that

underpinned the gubernatorial elections.

Number one, Enugu people had grown weary of professional politicians, who had built nothing to their names and had only lived on political offices and patronages. So, Peter Mbah’s entrance with his private sector pedigree and credentials as the founder of Pinnacle Oil and Gas Limited, which he nurtured from the rear to the number one in Nigeria’s petroleum downstream subsector was like a breath of fresh air to Ndi Enugu.

What has Edeoga built? He was Deputy Chief Press Secretary to Dr. Okwezilieze Nwodo as the governor of Enugu State, Council Chairman of Isi-Uzo LGA, House of Representatives Member, Special Adviser to Deputy Senate President, Special Assistant to President Goodluck Jonathan, and Commissioner for Local Government and Commissioner for Environment in the former Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi’s eight years administration. Yet he cannot point at anything in his constituency or any brilliant performance to his name. Enugu was the dirtiest under his tenure as Commissioner for Environment. But even more remarkably, he built nothing to his name outside government patronage.

Again, I doubt that anyone devoid of primordial sentiments, who watched or listened to Mbah and Edeoga media interviews or during public engagements during the campaigns, and who really meant well for Enugu State would choose Edeoga over and above Mbah. One was flat and bereft of ideas, while the other displayed brilliance and an understanding of how to turn the state around. In fact, whereas Mbah launched an ambitious manifesto with clearly stated promises restoring water in Enugu city within 180 days after over 20 years of acute water scarcity (which he has fulfilled, increasing water production from the occasional two million litres to 120 million litres daily), making Enugu one of the top three states in term of GDP, growing the state’s economy from $4.4bn to $30bn, achieving zero percent poverty headcount, etc, Edeoga repeatedly and boldly told Ndi Enugu that he had no manifesto and didn’t need one to make a good leader. He even claimed in one of his radio programmes that he has more leadership experience than Obi, as Obi was nowhere in politics when he became a local government chairman and a member of the House of Representatives. In fact, speaking on Mbah’s pedigree, the no-nonsense Monsignor Obiora Ike said: “Dr. Mbah is not a politician. He is a technocrat; and at certain points, we need a technocrat, who comes to salvage the society.”

Again, although denomination had played no significant role in the emergence of governors of Enugu State, Edeoga, who is an Anglican, shot himself in the foot by

introducing religion. He attacked Anglican priests like Archbishop Emmanuel Chukwuma, Bishop Onyeka Onyia, etc. for allegedly betraying the Anglican faith by supporting Mbah, who is a Catholic. On 4th March, 2023, an online medium quoted him as saying, “Be it known unto us today that an Anglican has never been a governor of Enugu State; all the past governors were either Catholic or Methodist adherents, who conspired with Pentecostal churches to marginalise Anglicans.” The import of that statement was that virtually everything, including the Catholic Church, that worked for Obi and LP’s victories on 25th February, worked against Edeoga in the 18th March gubernatorial election.

Importantly, Edeoga and Ugwuanyi’s mother are from the same family in Obollo-Eke, but married off to Eha-Amufu in Isi-Uzo LGA and Orba in the same Isi-Uzo until Udenu LGA was carved out of it in 1981. They are cousins. Meanwhile, whereas Isi-Uzo was carved into Enugu East Senatorial Zone from the old Nsukka Zone during transition to civilian rule, Edeoga did not pretend about the fact that he was a candidate for his Nsukka cultural zone rather than Enugu East Senatorial Zone where power was supposed to rotate to, based on the zoning principle. In fact, prior to the primary election, the likes of Chief Nnia Nwodo, Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo, Chief Okey Ezea, Senator Chuka Utazi, etc. openly canvassed that Ugwuanyi’s successor must come from the old Nsukka Zone to give it a straight 16 years. But this was contrary to the existing zoning principle.

But if anybody from the other zones was still being deceived that Edeoga’s candidacy was about Peter Obi and LP or that after all Edeoga hails from Enugu East Zone geopolitically, the declaration and incitement by the then Senator-elect, Okey Ezea while addressing a crowd of people from Nsukka zone at his residence, Ichi in Igbo-Eze South Local Government, after his victory cleared it all.

He said: “The March 11th (governorship) election is a straight fight between Nsukka and Nkanu…. So, you must prepare very well. You must make sure the directive goes round. This is about Nsukka. Young men, please, you must prepare yourselves very well. We are going into a war on March 11th, and it is a do or die affair.”

This viral comment, which Edeoga failed to condemn, became an eye-opener to the rest of the state, who thought they were doing Obidient Movement and “EluPee” with Edeoga. It was perhaps the last straw that broke Edeoga’s back.

It also advised prospective students outside Nigeria to notify Wigwe University via - “contact@wigweuniversity.edu.ng”, of their intention to apply so that instructions on how and where they can sit for the examination abroad can be forwarded to them.

It further said that WU is poised to shape Africa’s future as a leader in global education with its innovative approach to higher education and strong commitment to research, community engagement, and academic excellence.

“The institution’s blend of home-based and foreign faculty members promises to instill a sense of purpose, foster creativity, and inspire a new generation of well-rounded fearless leaders who will make a significant impact on the world,” the statement said.

WU is the second private university in the state but unquestionably would be one of the best on the continent when fully completed and streamed. Founded in 2016 as a non-profit organization, by the Herbert Onyewumbu Wigwe (HOW) Foundation, which is the special purpose vehicle through which Dr. Wigwe executes his numerous philanthropic activities. The HOW Foundation focuses on the critical arenas of education, youth empowerment through leadership and mentorship and health.

Wigwe University will offer courses in Science; Technology (AI, Robotics programmes and other futuristic niches); Engineering; Arts (Creative Arts and science-based Art

Programmes such as Gaming and Computer Creative, etc) and Mathematics (STEM); Management and Social Sciences at the start.

It would then subsequently offer courses in Medical Sciences; Medicine; Law and Post Graduate Degrees. It will have linkage relationships with top foreign universities that would facilitate students’ exchange programs. The thrust of the university is to create leaders and entrepreneurs who will, upon graduation, be focused on creation of jobs, as opposed to job-seeking.

Although there are many universities in the country, they have not substantially filled the void that exists in the nation’s tertiary education. WU is therefore being deliberately and carefully designed to fill these gaps, some of which are outdated curriculum; poor funding; decrepit facilities and infrastructure; poorly paid and motivated workforce.

In designing the academic and nonacademic programs at WU, Dr. Wigwe has hired academicians from top US universities and European institutions to work with experts from across the world, including Nigeria. Undoubtedly, the people of Isiokpo community are enthusiastic about the huge investment coming to their town.

With the 37 newly licensed private universities, there are now 238 universities in the country, of which 147 are private, 43 federal government-owned and 48 state governments-owned. But graduates from these institutions face prolonged periods of unemployment because the jobs have dried up and they were never equipped

with entrepreneurial skills.

According to Wigwe, WU is “A university that would create a new generation of fearless leaders and also be one of the best universities in the continent” and the institution which will have a 24/7 power supply within the campus and contiguous environs and set new continental standards of excellence.”

Wigwe is today one of the most fearless African financial sector leaders astutely superintending the monstrous growth of the Access Bank Group from a mere commercial bank straight to a continental financial behemoth on its way to merited global recognition.

The Wigwe University cited in his hometown Isiokpo, would have a 60% local and 40% expatriate faculty population, with about 200 buildings spread over 400 hectares of land. A very unque, exciting dimension is the announcement that students of the university would spend one year abroad getting international exposure.

The University will also undoubtedly spark a great infrastructural development in and around Isiokpo. This will consequently open up not only that region but the whole of South-south to international attention.

Nigeria is facing a staggering skills crisis.

One in every five of the world’s out-of-school children is in Nigeria, according to the United Nations Children’s Fund, while just 11.8% of the nation’s working-age population earn a wage. Last two years, Nigeria spent about 96% of its revenue servicing debt, leaving little for education.

Significantly, the lack of funding is attracting investors to the sector. As many as 147 private universities have been established since 1999, compared with 115 state-run institutions.

According to Bloomberg, wealthy Nigerians send their children overseas for higher education.

At least 44,195 residents were studying in UK universities in 2022, the highest in eight years, according to the UK’s Higher Education Statistics Agency. Only China and India had more students studying in the UK. Canada and the US are also popular destinations for Nigerian students.

But significant changes are afoot. The UK, Canada, US and swathes of Euro-Asia are experiencing waves of new nationalism that is pushing them to review their migration policies and even conditions governing how Nigeria and African students can study in their countries.

This scenario makes Dr. Wigwe’s unique educational sector intervention very important.

Hear him: “The school will be hybrid.

Technology can help the university achieve the same quality of education as US and UK University and “I don’t need 100 years or billions of dollars to achieve the same quality of education as we find in those schools. India is churning out a lot of developers through a single building.”

Just as he was hoping to replicate his club’s stellar performance at the international stage, injury struck.

ust as soccer loving Nigerians were still trying to recover from Wilfred Ndidi’s absence from the Africa Cup of Nations through injury, the Super Eagles suffered another injury blow after Bayer Leverkusensensation,VictorBoniface was ruled out of the biennial competition due to injury he suffered in Nigeria’s training camp in Abu Dhabi and has since been replaced by Nice striker, Terem Moffi.

The 23-year-old has been in good form for his German club Bayer Leverkusen with 10 goals and seven assists so far in the Bundesliga this season, and is in the running to be named the Bundesliga rookie of the month for a fifth consecutive time.

He shared his disappointment with his followers on X, having also previously missed the Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations through injury.

It is not the first time Boniface would miss a major tournament on the eve of the event. The 23-year-old was forced to withdraw from the 2019 CAF U20 Nations Cup in Niger seven days before the competition kicked off.

Taking to social media on Monday, Boniface lamented his misfortune while confirming he would not be available for

the Super Eagles.

Writing on X (formerly Twitter), the striker said: “U20 nations cup got injured 7 days before Nations Cup. Super Eagles got injured 6 days before Nations Cup. Only God knows why.”

Nottingham Forest’s Taiwo Awoniyi however responded to Boniface’s post with a cheerful message urging him to look forward to many more engagements with the Super Eagles in the future.

Awoniyi himself is not in the Nigerian squad for the AFCON due to a groin injury that required surgery.

Still, the Nottingham Forest man was enthusiastic when he wrote to Boniface: “My guy mafo……. We gallant for that green white green. We go again…..no one fit kill light. Imole ma tan last last.”

Interestingly, Nigerian legend, John Obi Mikel has labeled Boniface a complete striker and has backed the Bayer Leverkusen star to shine at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations just before he was injured.

Boniface has had a remarkable start to life in Germany after transferring from Belgian outfit Royale Union Saint-Gilloise in the summer, registering 24 goal involvements in all competitions.

The 23-year-old did not arrive at Bayer Leverkusen as an unknown quantity as he was the UEFA Europa League top scorer for 2022-2023 and was also named to the Team of the Season.

Mikel highlighted the qualities of Boniface as he praised the Super Eagles number 24 ahead of Nigeria’s opening game at the Africa Cup of Nations against Equatorial Guinea.

Speaking on The Obi One Podcast, Mikel stated: “He’s a complete striker when you watch him play. He scores goals, he’s good on the ball, technically very good, holds up the ball and also quick as well which is something you need from a striker. So he’s doing really well.

“All I have to say is that the sky will be your limit if you continue playing like this and keep working hard. I’m pretty sure you’ll do well in the Nations Cup and bring the trophy back home.”

The 6’3” attacker, who joined the Bundesliga giants last summer, left for Europe in 2019 from Nigerian youth club, Real Sapphire, but suffered two ACL injuries before the age of 21.

According to Eurosport, Boniface, who will miss the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations

with Nigeria through another injury setback, disclosed he had given up on football after his second ACL injury.

“When I saw the doctor, he told me something bad happened and I tore my ACL again. It was hell. I spoke to the coach; I said I wanted to go back to Nigeria.

“I was thinking, ‘what shall I do after football?’ At the age of 21, and 22, I had two ACL injuries. It was so terrible for me.

They said I had to do surgery, but may not need it for a few months. It was 14 months in total. I almost gave up.”

Boniface would eventually bounce back from his injury setbacks, excelling with Bodo/Glimt and Union SaintGilloise before sealing a big move to Bayer Leverkusen last summer.

Meanwhile, former Super Eagles captain, John Obi Mikel has clamoured for Premier League giants to sign the fourtime Bundesliga Rookie of the Month.

The Nigerian legend is rooting for his 22-year-old compatriot to become one of the best forwards in the game and would love to see him sign for the Blues when he finally leaves Leverkusen.

Meanwhile, Leverkusen has confirmed Boniface had undergone successful “Victor #Boniface was successfully operated on today in Berlin,” reads a statement on the club’s X handle.

“The striker will return to Leverkusen later this week to start his rehabilitation process.”

The 23-year-old is expected to be sidelined till April. His absence will be a major setback for the Super Eagles after an outstanding run for the Bundesliga table-toppers, Bayer Leverkusen.

Nigeria begin their quest for a fourth AFCON title in a Group A game against Equatorial Guinea tomorrow and will also face hosts Ivory Coast and Guinea-Bissau in the group stage.

Boniface now joins a growing list of Nigeria players who have been forced to miss AFCON 2023 through injury, including Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi, Leicester City midfielder Wilfred Ndidi and Real Sociedad strikerSadiq Umar.

On paper, one would expect the Super Eagles to get the maximum points against Equatorial Guinea and Guinea-Bissau, which would ensure a ticket to the knockout stage.

But betting on a side that could not defeat Lesotho and Zimbabwe in World Cup qualifiers leaves much to be desired.

To add to the team’s challenge is the spate of injuries between the ranks. Ndidi that was dealt a big blow through injury, and just when fans were recovering from the Leicester City midfield blow, news flittered in that the country’s best performer in Europe this season, Victor Boniface got injured at the team’s training camp in Abu Dhabi. As if that was not bad enough, on Thursday, Real Sociedad striker, Sadiq Umar, sat out Super Eagles training in Abidjan to heighten fears amongst the country’s football stakeholders that Nigeria may begin the AFCON 2023 campaign against Equatorial Guinea with just Victor Osimhen as the only out and out marksman.

It was later confirmed that Umar has been ruled out of the AFCON 2023 because of the injury he picked up from the Nigeria friendly with Guinea last Monday in Abu Dhabi. He’s ruled out of action for three months while Southampton on loan player at Trabzonspor in the Turkish league, Paul Onuachu has been drafted as his replacement in Jose Peseiro’s 25-man squad.

With Taiwo Awoniyi long ruled out of the competition and Kelechi Iheanacho yet to fully regain fitness since he got sidelined early last month at Leicester City only Osimhen is the striker in the squad without an issue ahead of tomorrow’s opening game against Equatorial Guinea.

Terem Moffi, a last-minute replacement for the injured Boniface, will only join up tomorrow and it is not certain now what Eagles handlers are going to do to ameliorate the dire situation.

“I believe in this group, we have a bunch of talented players to execute the job, fingers crossed and we are going to do so well. The most important thing for us now is to go to Ivory Coast and win the tournament,” Osimhen had said.

Interestingly, the team’s midfielder, Alex Iwobi is of the believe that the three-time African champions have the potential to go

far in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations.

“It has been very good. We’ve got a couple of friendlies to warm up for the Africa Cup of Nations. We’ve seen the ability and quality that we have in the team. From each man that’s in the squad and even the ones that didn’t make the squad there’s a lot of talent in Nigeria.

“We have confidence that we can go far in this competition but we have to prove it to ourselves and the first thing that I can assure Nigerians is we are going to give one hundred percent to make sure we make the nation proud,” Iwobi said.

Meanwhile, Super Eagles Chief Coach, José Peseiro has highlighted the offensive pedigree of the team ahead of the start of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations this weekend.

Nigeria qualified for the biggest African football event as the highest-scoring team during the qualification series, notching 22 goals in six games with Mali who scored 15 being the closest to them.

Peseiro in a recent interview highlighted and boasted about the offensive proficiency of his team, reckoning that his side is one of the best attacking teams in Africa.

“We qualified and had the highest number of goals scored (22) among all the pools because we are one of the African teams with a more offensive game plan,” Peseiro told Lusa agency, via Portuguese daily sports newspaper O Jogo.

“We had the best scorer (Victor Osimhen, with 10 goals) and one of the best assistants (Moses Simon, with three).”

Earlier, the Presidency gave Nigeria’s quest for a fourth AFCON title a big boost after President Bola Tinubu approved N12 billion for the payment of outstanding salaries and wages for the various national teams, including the Super Eagles.

Peseiro’s men will open group play at the 2023 AFCON against the Nzalang Nacional of Equatorial Guinea at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium, Abidjan, tomorrow, followed by a meeting with hosts Ivory Coast, January 18 and conclude with a game against Guinea Bissau at the iconic Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium, Abidjan on January 22.

The Super Eagles will need an outright win in the game to boost Super Eagles confidence ahead of their big game clash with host, Côte d’Ivoire next Thursday.

Nigeria’s opening game will be live on pay TV channel StarTimes. It promises to air all AFCON 2023 matches live on Sports Premium, channel 252 or 246 and on StarTimes, as well as on StarTimes-ON app.

Aside from winning the Africa Cup of Nations thrice, Nigeria have been third eight times and second four times.

It however remain to be seen if the Eagles can, against all odds, be African champions again in Cote d’Ivoire.

Leicester Coach Clashes with Peseiro over Iheanacho’s Fitness Ahead of Super Eagles first match against Equatorial Guinea, Leicester City manager, Enzo Maresca has frowned over the keeping of Kelechi Iheanacho with the Nigeria national team in spite of his injury issues.

Speaking to reporters at the pre-match press conference before his side’s Championship clash versus Coventry City, Maresca made it clear that Iheanacho is not fit to return to action.

Nigeria coach Jose Peseiro claimed on two different occasions this week that the striker had gotten a clean bill of health from Leicester City’s medical

team and would link up with his international teammates in Ivory Coast today.

Iheanacho has been nursing an injury which has prevented him from being called up to the Leicester City squad since the 1-1 draw at Ipswich Town on Boxing Day. Iheanacho was not spotted in

Group Condemns Propaganda against Emefiele

The Agbor Stakeholders Forum (ASF) has decried the continuous propaganda against a former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Godwin Emefiele.

In a press statement made available to the media by Kanene Kachikwu for ASF yesterday the group stated: “We have watched with alarm, the seeming intention of the federal government under the charge of President Bola Tinubu, to hunt down and destroy our son, Mr. Godwin Emefiele by any means possible.

“Recall that we, his kinfolks and stakeholders in his Agbor homestead have had cause to cry out last year after he was detained for over six months without bail.

“Though he was finally granted bail, we are moved to cry out once more in view of

the relentless propaganda and media assault the federal government has unleashed on Mr Emefiele in the last couple of weeks.

“We are worried that since the beginning of this administration, one man has been subjected to the investigation of the Department of State Service (DSS), the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and a Special Financial Investigator, Mr. Jim Obazee, yet no charges against him has been able to stand in the face of the court.

“As we chronicled in our first appeal, our brother has been charged with over half a dozen offences and all of them have failed in different courts.”

Furthermore, it stated: “The DSS first accused him of financing terrorism. After a thorough search of all his residences, all they got was a little gun, more like a toy

gun.

“Then the EFCC took over and combed through all his financial records. They went to press that N7.1 trillion was missing.

This was to later turn to N1.2 billion official vehicles procurement irregularity allegedly perpetrated by Emefiele and a female colleague. This too didn’t stand in the court of law.

“Most recently, the EFCC claimed it is probing forex transactions of the CBN spanning the last nine years (2014 - 2023).”

The group added, “Why is the EFCC probe different from Special Investigator, Obazee probe.

Finally, Obazee told the world in its leaked report that Emefiele had interests in three bank necessitating the takeover of the banks. But when the bank’s management was changed a few days ago, different

reasons were adduced.”

The forum further went on to state that according to the CBN, the infractions of the three banks (Union, Keystone and Polaris banks) ranged from, “regulatory noncompliance, corporate governance failure, disregarding the conditions under which their licences were granted, and involvement in activities that pose a threat to financial stability, among others.”

The statement added, “in all of this, the CBN didn’t give specific details of what makes up infringement and noncompliance.

“Our point and also our grouse is that these probes, investigations and reports therefrom are all politically motivated attempts to ‘destroy’ our brother for his alleged role in former President Buhari’s naira redesign policy.”

Chikelu would insist that records of expenditure should not be mistaken for evidence of beneficial impact of government programmes on the welfare of citizens. Some ministry personnel who were astounded by his disposition and orientation even openly opined that “a serious Minister” should not be looking into the routine “chop and let others chop” culture in government. “Afterall, it is not anyone’s father’s money is involved”.

As was said on this page five years ago, and 10 years after Chikelu left office as Minister of Information and National Orieintation, “The ministry got a totally new approach to a lot of things under him. He explained that it was an efficient information machinery, and not the high visibility of government ministers, that made the US, UK, use behind the scenes efficiency to maintain effective global communication”.

Chikelu predicated most of his submissions on the simple fact that there were Best Practices in all human affairs, including information management and public communication. He would argue that “Modern nations build, develop and sustain government communication as part of the overall social process”.

His tenure brought into the very idea of the job of Information Minister an agenda for national reorientation on what to expect from, and demand of, that office and other institutions of state. Like the current Minister of Information and national Orientation,

Chikelu did not think that every critic of the government was automatically an enemy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

He held that government communication should not strive primarily to please the powers that be.

His methodical approach to his job was consistent with what would be expected of any member of his generation anywhere in the developed world. He recognized the following three problems in the job of national information management, namely; (a) How to procure authentic information and use credible persons and platforms to present and project it; (b) How to separate useful information from idle charter and ego-massaging government rhetoric; (c) How to make credible information available to his various publics, in such a way that even those he does not win over will, at least, not swell the ranks of those who would not bother to listen at all.

That is why, while dealing with the job of national communication, he also focused on: (i) Developing personnel skills and strengthening structures and processes in the ministry; (ii) Restoring the government’s institutional capacity for distilling useful information; (iii) Synchronising the activities, programmes and projections, of the information ministry and related agencies for unity of purpose and to avoid duplications and wastages; and (iv) Showing that public office holders have a duty to insist on the right paradigms and not play to the gallery, even if uninformed public opinion wanted it otherwise.

Given recent national events, I repeat what was said at the beginning of this article: “The mantra: ‘Give the young ones a chance’ is right. It is wrong when “young ones” is defined strictly, and only, in terms of the biological age of individuals and groups – rather than the age of the ideas and aspirations people are aspiring towards.

CHIKELU: BIOLOGICAL VS IDEOLOGICAL AGE back to the days of Nigeria’s founding fathers, the age of those who negotiated the nation’s independence; as well as the age of those who threw up the grand economic, human capital and overall regional and national development programmes and initiatives.

They contrast remarkably with a large percentage of the biologically younger ones, of the same age, of today. What is the age bracket of those who have been governors and House of Assembly members in the states? Have majority of them performed, or are performing, spectacularly in the positive sense? Many who have had a go at leadership positions apparently did not wash their hands well enough before stepping forward and dipping. And it is not that they are unintelligent in the academic sense, or incompetent; even from the angle of enlightened self-interest.

But enough of that!

Let us, dwell on the profile and tenure of a Nigerian who became a minister in his thirties, and who left an incredible record of probity, integrity and forwardlooking paradigms. That was in 2004, exactly 20 years ago, under President Olusegun Obasanjo.

We are talking about Chief Chukwuemeka Chikelu.

He was Minister of Information and National Orientation. He was simple, focused and methodical. His constant refrain was this: “Excellence, national interest and a commitment to the Best Global Practices should characterize everything we do here; because this is service to God, by serving human beings and our fatherland in the right way”. As minister, he was always on the lookout for informed opinions, professional advice and policies with measurable impact. He did not at any time allow the melodrama of “authority” to colour his outlook.

In his first meeting and briefing with the ministry’s leadership and staff,

he informed a somewhat confounded audience that the was reporting to work as a minister was to work with them in serving the people and the national interest. Chikelu remained his sober, decent, simple and unpretentious self throughout his tenure as minister. He deliberately ensured that there was no separation between Chukwuemeka Chikelu as a person living his normal life, and Chukwuemeka Chikelu as a minister going to work like every other citizen who is reporting for duty elsewhere.

He lived in his private house throughout his tenure as minister. He drove in his own car and only occasionally used the assigned official car for purely formal events, where his car would be inappropriate mode of transportation according to the state protocols. The rent, and other personal expenses, of all his aides were borne by the aides themselves; and not the ministry.

And he was a brilliant young man by every standard. with very pronounced personal preference for orderliness, clear targets and easily measurable results.

As would be expected of a young man who is guided by 21st century leadership and service paradigms, the questions Chikelu often asked when presented with any proposals, whether from within or from outside the ministry, are the following: (1) How will this advance our job here and also benefit the people and the nation? (2) How do we measure the positive results, if indeed there is much to be expected from it? (3) Can we justify the proposed costs? (4) Would we gladly spend this amount of money on this project if we were paying with our own personal resources? (5) Can we work out the cheapest possible figures for this project and scale up from there?

He was that meticulous.

Chikelu would not or propose approve anything that violated any clear policy frameworks, or administrative guideline.

He paid close attention to every public

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF TINUBU’S FIRST WEEK OF 2024 the President visits a state for instance like his recent visit to Lagos during the Christmas/New Year holiday, during which he decided to observe the Jumat at the Central Mosque in Lagos Island, the long stretch of vehicles noticed in his convoy are not entirely his own.

Some dignitaries in Lagos, top security officers, top traditional rulers, political associates and many others simply joined the entourage to the mosque at no prompting of the President.

The importance of cutting the number in the President’s travels apart from the concomitant reduction in total cost of the trip is unmistakable. First, it is in tandem with the demands of the present challenging times when prices of goods and services have skyrocketed owing to what many tie to the prevalent foreign exchange rate.

Second, by slashing the presidential entourage, President Tinubu has again

demonstrated leadership by example. He has shown he fully understands what the people are experiencing at present and shares in their pains, which he says will be temporary, following his New Year Day speech.

Indeed, the cost of governance and administration in Nigeria is high and it has become imperative to bring it down. Every possible avenue must be employed to do this. It is estimated that the country mostly spends over 75% of her federal budget on recurrent expenditure, leaving less than 25% for capital expenditure. The present administration is set to change this governance narrative. For instance, in the N28.7trillion 2024 budget, recurrent expenditure was pegged at N8.7tr and capital expenditure at N9.9tr. This trend is expected to continue going forward.

Chikelu: Biological vs Ideological Age

O

ur people say that an experienced elder who observes the dance steps, and footsteps, of a young man who got the traditional Ozo title at the age of 20 will know whether the young man will live to old age. If the young man in question is so caught up with his self-celebration that he does not care whether he is stepping on people’s toes, or stirring up a lot of dust and making too many people to sneeze in the village square, then he has the wrong things coming for him, down the road.

It is also a well-known saying that “It is only the child who washes his hands very well that is allowed to dine with elders and titled men.” This statement is a metaphorical way of saying that the person who is biologically young, but who exhibits, or exudes, a level of maturity/personal grooming, that befits an adult of full value, earns himself the honour of being among the leaders and knowledgeable trendsetters in society despite his biological age.

The mantra: “Give the young ones a chance” is right. It is wrong when

“young ones” is defined strictly, and only, in terms of the biological age of individuals and groups – rather than the

age of the ideas and aspirations people are aspiring towards. We must, therefore, re-examine the ideological orientation, guiding values and general motivation of many young people who aspire to leadership, or who are holding leadership positions in Nigeria today.

When we consider that largely the same people have been the principal actors in our national life for the last 40 years, the question we must ask is: ‘Is the leadership of the federal Republic of Nigeria some kind of hereditary chieftaincy for them”? Most of these people should have since given way to a well capacitated Replacement Generation that is properly situated within contemporary 21st century leadership, governance and developmental paradigms.

But before we hurry off to sweep everything ‘old’ away, we must ask and answer the following questions: (1) Can someone be biologically young in age, but ideologically old in his orientation, because of his beliefs and values? (2) Do we have ample evidence of a direct positive relationship between biological youth and great performance in public office in the last 23 years of democracy

in Nigeria? (3) What should we do when the presumably young and newly bred re-enact with great aplomb the worst forms of malfeasance perpetrated by their elders?

I ask the above questions against the background of recent developments in our national life, wherein the supposedly young, intelligent and upwardly mobile do not espouse the 21st century leadership, followership and service values.

If, as the constitution says, the primary purpose of government is to cater for the welfare and security of the people, it should be the younger generation in particular that would demonstrate this at every opportunity; because it is their world we are talking about. If the primary business of anyone in public office is to focus on everything that would strengthen the welfare of the people and ensure a more secure nation, then it must also be expected that young men and women who have held, and/or are still holding, public office in Nigeria would be beacons of hope.

The Significance of Tinubu’s First Week of 2024

T

here couldn’t have been a better predictor of what to expect from President Bola Tinubu in 2024 than the way and manner he began the New Year. For the President, 2024 started on a business like, work-filled note. While many were still savouring the New Year, the Nigerian leader cut short his Christmas/New Year holiday in Lagos on January 1, returned to Abuja to sign the N28.7 trillion 2024 Appropriation Bill passed by the National Assembly.

It was his first assignment in the New Year. The way he did it demonstrated the seriousness and patriotic commitment he brings unto the exalted job.

For him, nothing must stand on the way of the onerous responsibility bestowed on him. Senate President, Godswill Akpabio and House of Representatives Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas were shocked to learn the President had returned to Abuja and ready to sign the budget.

Since that first day of the year, it has been one impactful governance step and important decision after another. Indeed, it was one week of 2024 to remember.

It reminds me of a song by Canadian rock band, Barenaked Ladies with the same title “One Week”. The song was released as the first single from their 1998 album, Stun. The song is unique for its significant number of pop culture references, and remains the band’s bestknown song. According to Wikipedia, the song reached No.1 on the US Billboard Hot 100.

In one week of 2024 to remember, President Tinubu made pivotal and landmark decisions which have been widely applauded.

Critic-turned-admirer of President Tinubu, Reno Omokri, catalogued some of these important decisions and developments in a recent tweet.

The decisions include the suspension of the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Beta Edu, and Coordinator of the National Social Investment Programme Agency, Hajiya Halimotu Shehu, for alleged financial transgressions and the ongoing investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to determine their guilt; the summon by the

President of another minister alleged to be involved in a controversial contract; the drastic reduction in the entourage of the President’s domestic and international travels; the banning of the money-fordegree universities in Benin Republic, Togo and other countries; and the clearing of the N12billion outstanding allowances and other arrears for the Super Eagles, taking part in the African Cup of Nations tournament beginning this weekend. Arrears owed other national teams were also paid by the President.

In that preceding week, the Bola Tinubu administration embarked on the payment of wage support benefits to civil servants, the disbursement of N105.5 billion for emergency repair of 266 roads across the country, the launch of the automated passport portal and the unfolding of plans to build a new Chinese-funded steel plant in Nigeria following on the heel of a visit to China by the Minister of Steel Development, Shuaib Abubakar Audu.

The swift suspension of Betta Edu, one of the visible ministers at present, pending the full investigation of the

alleged scandal in her ministry not only demonstrates there are no scared cows in the anti-graft crusade, it will also serve as deterrent against others who may otherwise believe the present government is business-as-usual.

However, as some have argued, the minister should not be pilloried until after the full investigation of the allegations and her culpability or otherwise established.

Perhaps, the most exciting of the President’s decisions during that important week, in my view, is the resolve to cut the cost of governance by drastically reducing the number of people in his entourage on local and international trips. President Tinubu directed that top government functionaries, dignitaries and aides on his travels be slashed by 60 per cent, more than half.

On local trips, the President, for instance ordered that, in the area of security, his team should rely more on the capacity of the security establishment and existing protocols in the host states.
