NLC Mobilises to Shutdown Kaduna Monday Onyebuchi Ezigbo in Abuja Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has started mobilising its affiliate unions and civil society organisations to join the strike in Kaduna State, scheduled to commence midnight Sunday, May 16.

NLC had threatened to mobilise workers in both public and private sectors to shut down economic activities in the state over what it described as obnoxious anti-worker policies: arbitrary and illegal declaration of redundancies; premature

compulsory retirement of all officers on grade levels 14 and above, by the state government. In a circular issued by its acting General Secretary, Ishmail Bello, NLC instructed the leadership of all its affiliate unions to ensure that the strike

commences from midnight, Sunday, May 16. "We write to communicate to all affiliate unions of the NLC to fully mobilise all their members in Kaduna to a complete and indefinite withdrawal of services until a counter directive is issued

by the leadership." The circular also urged allies and affiliate unions in neighbouring states to mobilise to Kaduna to support the strike. Already, one of the allies, the Centre for Labour Studies (CLS) has offered to give

total support for the planned shutdown of economic activities in Kaduna State A statement signed by its Director, Femi Aborisade said that other unions, including the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Continued on page 6

Parents Panic as Abductors of Kaduna Greenfield Varsity Students Cut Contact Interactions severed 8 days ago after demanding fresh N170m ransom N60m earlier paid by parents ignored Charles Ajunwa in Lagos and John Shiklam in Kaduna Parents of the remaining 16 abducted students of Greenfield University, Kaduna State, have been thrown into further confusion, following the decision of the kidnappers to cut further communications with them. Bandits invaded the school on April 18 and abducted 22 students and a staff. They initially demanded N800 million for the release of the students. However, to push their demand for ransom, they killed five of the students on two occasions, when negotiations were still ongoing. Sources said the last time the kidnappers called any of the parents was on April 8, eight days ago, during which they made fresh demand of N10 million ransom on each

of the 16 students and a staff of the university still being held, which comes to N170 million. Prior to this, the parents had collectively paid N60 million ransom without getting a result. The decision of the kidnappers to cut communications for days has been causing great anxiety among the parents, with some of them afraid for the lives of their children. “We don’t know what is happening again. We don’t know what is happening to our children. They (kidnappers) are not talking to us again. You know they have been threatening to kill them if we don’t pay more and suddenly we are not hearing anything again. We are so scared and praying that God will touch Continued on page 6
