Report: Nigeria Losing Billions of Dollars to Underdeveloped Art Sector

Nigeria may be overlooking one of its most promising non-oil growth sectors as inadequate policies, weak institutional support and poor infrastructure continue to prevent the country's

thriving visual arts industry from evolving into a major contributor to economic growth, employment and foreign exchange earnings, a new report has revealed.

The report titled: “Can Nigeria Turn Art into an Economic Asset?

Lessons from the UAE,” by the

Financial Derivatives Company Limited, warned that despite the global acclaim enjoyed

by Nigerian artists and the growing popularity of events such as ART X Lagos, the country has yet to develop the policy framework required to transform

its artistic assets into a globally competitive creative economy capable of supporting economic diversification.

According to the report, while Nigeria continues to search for sustainable alternatives to oil revenues amid mounting

fiscal pressures, the visual arts sector represents an underutilised economic opportunity that could significantly expand tourism, attract foreign investment, create jobs and boost export earnings if properly developed.

It noted that ART X Lagos

alone has attracted more than 700,000 visitors from over 170 countries during its first decade, underscoring the growing international appeal of Nigerian contemporary art and its potential to generate substantial economic value.

2027: APC CONFIRMS SHETTIMA AS TINUBU’S RUNNING MATE reports suggesting he could be replaced on the 2027 ticket, the All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday moved to end the uncertainty by unveiling him as President Bola Tinubu's running mate for the next year’s general election.

Their efforts, she said, led to their continued existence. In the company of the other teachers and students, she prayed for God’s blessing for all who contributed to their rescue.

She said, “Hello sir, our father, we are grateful. The president sir,

we are grateful. We understand your commitment to our safety and we appreciate all you did for us. We could see your hand.

Thank you very much.

“And all the security operatives, they tried so much and that is why we are still alive now. We are very grateful unto you. Thank you. Thank you very much. Thank you sir. God bless you sir.”

The others, who were apparently excited too chorused “Thank you sir. God bless you sir.”

The Presidency said the victims were rescued through a coordinated operation involving the military, the Department of State Services (DSS), the police and other intelligence agencies, stressing that no ransom was paid and no prisoner swap was carried out to secure their release.

Presidential spokesman, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, who announced the development in a statement,

said the operation also foiled the kidnappers' demand for the release of one of their detained leaders, who is currently facing prosecution.

"In the course of the rescue operation, eight of the kidnappers were arrested and are now in DSS custody, while some of them were neutralised," Onanuga said, dismissing reports that the victims were freed through negotiations or any form of exchange.

“There was no quid pro quo in the rescue as one of the terrorists, a kingpin, that the kidnappers demanded his release, is being prosecuted for his atrocities, the security agencies will give full account soon," he added.

According to him, the rescue followed weeks of sustained military and intelligence operations that gradually weakened the terrorists' network and compelled them to abandon the captives.

Reacting to the successful operation, President Bola Tinubu expressed profound delight over the safe rescue of the children and teachers, describing it as a major victory for the nation's security forces. Tinubu regretted the anguish that the children and their teachers, as well as members of their families and the entire nation, have experienced since the sad occurrence.

The President however commended the military, DSS, police and other security agencies for their professionalism and resilience in ensuring the victims were rescued without collateral damage.

He also praised the Oyo State Government for its cooperation throughout the rescue efforts and directed relevant emergency agencies to provide medical care, trauma counselling and other relief support for the rescued victims.

THISDAY findings from the stock market showed that the likes of Dangote Cement, MTN Nigeria Communications Plc, Aradel Holdings Plc, Airtel Africa Plc gained significantly this week as the market capitalisation of listed companies on the Nigerian

Exchange Limited (NGX) closed for trading at N156.547 trillion, which was a N9.3 trillion or 6.4 per cent increase compared with the N155.586 trillion it opened for trading.

Consequently, the NGX All Share Index closed for trading this week at 243,798.76 basis points, a growth of 14,558.42 or 6.35 per cent increase from 229,240.34 basis points the market opened for trading.

Key market indices also gained significantly in the week under review. Specifically, the NGX Industrial Goods Index led the chart with 10.46 per cent WoW to close at 10,713.01 basis points.

The likes of NGX Banking Index gained 4.78 per cent WoW

to close at 2,149.14 basis points, while NGX Oil & Gas Index advanced by 8.11 per cent WoW to close at 5,255.03 basis points.

The MD/CEO, Globalview Capital Limited, Aruna Kebira, in a chat with THISDAY, stressed that investors were taking position ahead of second quarter ended June 30, 2026 corporate earnings.

S&P Dow Jones Indices had stated that its potential reclassification of Nigeria was based on the improvements in the country’s regulatory environment and market integrity.

The decision, announced in S&P DJI’s annual Country Classification Watchlist recently

released, positions Nigeria among markets under formal review for a possible change in classification next year.

While the announcement does not constitute an immediate upgrade, it signalled that the country’s recent regulatory and structural reforms were gaining recognition from one of the world’s leading index providers.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s external reserves have continued its steady rise, increasing uninterrupted for two months to reach $51.74 billion as of July 9, 2026, reflecting stronger foreign exchange inflows and an improvement in the country's external position.

Data from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) showed that the reserves grew from $48.32 billion on May 6, 2026, to $51.74 billion as at July 9, 2026, representing an increase of $3.42 billion, or 7.1 per cent, over the two-month period.

The latest figure also represented a significant improvement from the $37.33 billion recorded on July 9, 2025.

This translates to a year-on-year increase of $14.41 billion, or 38.6 per cent, underscoring the steady rebuilding of Nigeria's foreign exchange reserves over the past year.

The sustained rise in reserves comes amid ongoing reforms in the foreign exchange market,

In the meantime, the naira closed the week on a mixed note, recording a marginal depreciation at the official market as well as the parallel market.

At the NFEM, the local currency closed at N1,379.60/$1 yesterday, compared with the N1,378.40/$1 it closed on Thursday, representing a marginal decline.

The parallel market also recorded a modest depreciation during the week. The naira, which traded at about N1,420/$1 at the beginning of the week, weakened by N10 to close at N1,430/$1 yesterday.

The federal government has evacuated another batch of 284 Nigerians from South Africa, making it the fifth flight operated to bring back the citizens from the hostile African nation.

Piqued by the recent mass repatriation of Nigerians from South Africa, a former Nigerian Ambassador to Japan, Ambassador Mohammed Gana Yisa, has said that it was high time the federal government initiates policies that will be more attractive for Nigerians to stay at home and be doing their businesses.

The flight, which was operated by Air Peace, arrived at the Hajj/Cargo Terminal of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos late Thursday where officials of the Nigeria Immigration Service documented the new arrivals.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the airlift was part of an ongoing governmentsponsored repatriation exercise designed to help citizens who feel endangered by recent xenophobic tensions.

Out of the five evacuation flights to bring in Nigerians from South Africa, Air Peace operated four times, bringing a total of 1, 085, which include 262

“With the successful completion of today's mission, Air Peace has now safely repatriated 1,085 Nigerians across

four humanitarian evacuation flights, having previously evacuated 262 Nigerians on June 11, 271 on June 30, 268 on July 3, and 284 on July 9. The milestone further reinforces the airline's enduring readiness to deploy its fleet and operational capabilities in the service of the nation whenever duty calls.

“More than an airlift, the ongoing evacuation exercise reflects Air Peace's unwavering humanitarian philosophy; one rooted in compassion, patriotism and an abiding commitment to ensuring that Nigerians,

Dangote Cement Donates Cottage Appeal Court Rules Publication Alone Does Not Establish Defamation Hospital to Obajana Community

Wale Igbintade The Court of Appeal Lagos Division has ruled that the mere publication of an allegedly defamatory statement is not enough to sustain a claim for libel, holding that a claimant must produce credible evidence showing that the publication actually lowered his or her reputation in the eyes of rightthinking members of society.

The court made the pronouncement while dismissing an appeal filed by the Chief Executive Officer of EbonyLife Group, Mosunmola (Mo) Abudu, against the judgement of the Lagos State High Court, which dismissed her libel suit against child rights advocate, Oluyemisi Wada.

In a unanimous decision, the three-member panel held that although Wada admitted publishing the disputed article,

Abudu failed to establish a crucial element of defamation because she did not call any independent witness to testify that the publication negatively affected their opinion of her.

The panel, comprising Justices Folasade Ayodeji-Ojo, Muslim Sule Hassan and Polycarp T. Kwahar, delivered its lead judgment through Justice Hassan.

Abudu had sued Wada for libel, seeking N100 million in general damages, N100 million in aggravated damages, an order compelling Wada to publish a retraction and apology in THISDAY, two national newspapers and online platforms, as well as a perpetual injunction restraining further publication of the alleged defamatory statements.

In her defence, Wada denied liability and relied on the defences of justification and fair comment.

The Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has dismissed the death threat alleged by the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, insisting that he would be alive to contest and fail again in 2027.

The leadership of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) yesterday urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to disregard what it described as attempts by its expelled former National Chairman, Shehu Musa Gabam, to rely on a Federal High Court judgement to reclaim the party's leadership.

The party insisted that the judgement cannot override an

earlier decision of the Supreme Court.

The party maintained that the Federal High Court judgement being relied upon by Gabam was founded on a Court of Appeal decision that had already been set aside by the Supreme Court.

It argued that any attempt by INEC to act on it would amount to undermining the authority of the nation's apex court.

In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary,

Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, the SDP said its attention was drawn to a letter dated July 9, 2026, purportedly written on behalf of Gabam by White Chambers & Co. to INEC, forwarding the judgement delivered by the Federal High Court in Abuja on June 24, 2026, in a suit instituted

by Salawu Adeniyi Mustapha Adeoti against INEC and three others.

The party disclosed that it had already appealed the

judgement and that the matter was pending before the Court of Appeal, urging the electoral commission to maintain the status quo pending the final determination of the appeal.

According to the SDP, the plaintiff in the suit was neither its governorship candidate in Osun State nor a participant in its governorship primary election, stressing that Dr. Ajala remained the duly nominated candidate of the party.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), through the West African Health Organisation (WAHO) yesterday, handed over 10 fully equipped four-wheel-drive ambulances and critical medical equipment to The Gambia in a major effort to strengthen the country’s emergency response capacity and bolster regional health security.

the African Development Bank (AfDB) under the COVID-19 Exceptional Emergency Project for Low-Income ECOWAS Member States, represents an investment of approximately $3.4 million in The Gambia out of the project’s overall $22.3 million regional budget.

The medical equipment includes oxygen concentrators, haemodialysis machines, X-ray machines, anaesthetic machines, patient monitors, diagnostic tools, biomedical engineering

Speaking at the handover ceremony in Banjul, President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, described the intervention as a landmark demonstration of regional solidarity, stressing that the investment extends beyond the COVID-19 pandemic to building resilient health systems capable of

Major Opposition Parties Boycott Edo LG Election, Cite Lack of Confidence in Process Felix Omoh-Asun in Benin

Major opposition parties in Edo State will not be participating in the local government election holding today.

Although, the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC) on Thursday, said 12 parties would take part in the election, indications on ground show that it is an affair of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the ruling party in the state.

The Chairman of EDSIEC, Hon. Jonathan Aifuobhokhan, had maintained that 12 political parties were vying for councillorship and chairmanship positions in the 18 local

government areas, covering all wards and 4,519 polling units, but the reality is that no major opposition parties are participating in the election.

Aifuobhokhan disclosed that the accredited political parties participating in the election include, the All Progressives Congress (APC), Accord Party, Action People’s Party (APP), People’s Redemption Party (PRP), All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), and Allied People’s Movement (APM).

In a petition addressed to the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, and signed by the ACPN Chairman, Ambrose Eze, the association described the Bill as unnecessary and

a duplication of existing regulatory framework.

In the document titled, ‘Stop the National Health Facility Regulatory Agency (NHFRA) Bill in National Interest’, ACPN argued that Nigeria has sufficient statutory institutions to regulate healthcare practice. It further posited that professional regulatory councils established by Acts of the National Assembly already discharge the functions as proposed in the NHFRA. According to ACPN, the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria, Medical and

Dental Council of Nigeria, Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control regulate their respective areas of specialisation, insisting that these institutions have operated within clearly defined legal framework and mandates for several decades.

Police Arrest, Arraign Three over Viral Torture Video of Delta Youth In Emevor

The Delta State Police Command has arrested and arraigned three suspects in connection with the viral video showing the alleged torture and humiliation of a resident by a community leader and members of a local vigilante group in Emevor Community, Isoko North Local Government

The police said the suspects, acting in concert with others who are currently at large,

unlawfully apprehended the victim and took him to a hotel in Emevor community, where he was allegedly subjected to severe humiliation, physically assaulted, inflicted with bodily injuries and threatened with death.

Following the conclusion of investigations, police arrested Lucky Okeremu (48), Chairman

of Emevor Community, Okiemute Oyibo (46), and Karo Akamakusi (45).

The three suspects have since been arraigned before a competent court on charges bordering on conspiracy to commit felony, assault occasioning harm, conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace and threatening the life of

the victim, contrary to Sections 516, 355, 249(e) and 86 of the Criminal Code Law, Cap. C21, Volume I, Laws of Delta State of Nigeria, 2006.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Nigeria’s anti-narcotics agency, has arraigned an alleged drug kingpin, three Mexican nationals and six other suspects over what authorities describe as one of the largest clandestine methamphetamine production facilities ever uncovered in the country, with drugs valued at more than N480 billion on the international market.

NDPHC Hands Over 225MW Gbarain Power Plant for Rehabilitation

The Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) has officially handed over the rehabilitation of its 225MW Gbarain power plant to a joint venture comprising TILT Energy Limited and Schneider Electric for the replacement of the plant's burnt Power Control Module (PCM).

Speaking during the ceremony, NDPHC's General Manager, Generation Projects, Ginsau Idris, said the PCM was extensively damaged by fire, making its replacement imperative,

While expressing confidence in the contractors, Idris noted that all parties clearly understood their responsibilities and were committed to delivering the project successfully and within schedule.

For his part, NDPHC's Executive Director, Generation, Abdullahi Kassim, recalled that the PCM was destroyed in November 2020, just months before the plant was due for commissioning, describing

the incident as a major setback to the project.

He commended the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Jennifer Adighije, for championing the revival of the project.

Kassim also disclosed that complementary infrastructure, including access roads and support buildings, is under construction, describing the Gbarain power plant as a strategic asset because of its proximity to gas supply.

BAFTA-winning Director, Akinola Davies Jr. talks about the journey of ‘My Father’s Shadow.’ The conversation traces the journey of the film: from its start as an arthouse project, to becoming the first Nigerian film selected for official competition at Cannes, sweeping five awards at the AMVCA 2026, and its selection as the UK entry for the Academy Awards. aking My Father’s Shadow: Mainland Lagos, Film Stock, and a Whale Davies Jr., who grew up on the Lagos mainland, shot the film almost entirely there, focusing on parts of the city that rarely appear on screen. The production had five weeks of preparation and a six-week shoot on film stock, which naturally slowed the pace and required more considered decisions across departments. He describes a production approach that treated crew members as artists with proper time and resources, paying overtime, holding extensive rehearsals, and giving costume, sound, and production design the space typical Nollywood schedules often cannot. This helped the film feel more substantial than its budget suggested, as money went further in Nigeria. The most challenging sequence was the whale on the beach, which combined practical elements like boats to block sightlines and a physical fin with CG work. The team had almost no useful visual references.

He repeatedly credits the entire crew, many based in Nigeria who has never left the country, and pushes back against the industry habit

Why can’t Nigerian cinema do that?” he asks. “That’s not even just with us. That’s for everyone, our journalists, our critics, our actors, our crews, our publishing, our PR.”

Davies Jr. explains that almost all financing came from the UK, with an Irish co-production partner involved, and that it would have felt disingenuous to turn away from those supporters once the film gained attention. The team had originally expected a Nigerian submission, but BAFTA made a strong and deliberate effort to secure the film.

Beyond finances, he sees the process as important learning. As first-time filmmakers navigating the UK campaign, they gained direct insight into how Academy submissions and campaigns work, including costs for US screenings and what it takes to position an African film seriously. “We can feed back information on how those campaigns are run,” he says. From Hawking in Jos to Royal Honours: Peter Igho Reflects on His Remarkable Life Journey Legendary Nigerian television producer and broadcaster, Peter Igho, is known for his pioneering work with the Nigerian Television Authority where many of his iconic productions in film and television laid the foundation which many agree helped lay the foundation for what would become Nollywood. From the streets of Jos to the seat of the Caliphate, as Kakakin Daular Usmaniyya, it has been a journey of grace. The veteran broadcaster shares his 10 memorable moments with Ferdinand Ekechukwu

it was huge. It was my first proof that words could take me places. That if you worked hard and thought clearly, your voice could be heard beyond your classroom. That prize gave me confidence. It told me writing was not just a hobby — it could be a path.

CHILDHOOD IN JOS – HAWKING FOR MOTHER

Growing up in Jos, I hawked on the streets for my mother to help make ends meet. It was not easy, but it taught me everything early. Hustle.

Humility. And the dignity of work. Jos was a melting pot then — tin, trade, and cinema. Walking those streets, I learned to watch people, to listen, to tell a story with my eyes. Those lessons from the road have stayed with me all my life.

5. THE Q MARKS, UNIVERSITY OF IBADAN At the University of Ibadan, we formed a music group called The Q Marks to raise money for ourselves. We performed at parties, we struggled, we laughed, and we bonded. It was survival, but with style. UI in the early 70s was electric — ideas, politics, theatre. The Q Marks taught me teamwork, discipline, and how to create something out of nothing. Those years gave me the foundation for everything that came after.

2. MY FATHER’S MINING CAMPS As a boy, I visited my father at his tin mining camps across the North. The conditions were harsh, fortunes mixed. But it was there I saw resilience up close. My father’s stories around the campfire, the struggles of the miners, the hope and disappointment — it all shaped me. It taught me about hardship, about endurance, and about the kind of Nigeria that works with its hands. That experience gave me a deep respect for the ordinary Nigerian.

3. MOTHER’S TREASURY OF STORIES My mother had a treasury of folktales. Every night, we gathered around her and she would spin stories — of tortoises, kings, and tricksters. Those nights fired something in me. I fell in love with narrative. With the power of a voice to hold a room.

Years later, when I moved into television, I realised I was just doing what my mother did, only with a camera. The moving image became my own way of telling those same stories.

I wrote, produced and directed a dance drama using Nupe music and Angale dance. The North-Western State picked it. At the National Festival of Arts and Culture, NAFEST, held in Lagos in 1974, we emerged among the nation’s best three. Bida gave me the story, the rhythm, and the belief that our local culture was good enough for the national stage. That was my first national applause.

8. “COCK CROW AT DAWN” – FIRST ON-LOCATION NTA DRAMA Producing and directing Cock Crow at Dawn was a turning point. Commissioned for Operation Feed The Nation and sponsored by UBA, it was the first NTA drama shot entirely on location. It wasn’t shot in a studio. We took the cameras to the farms, to the villages. The series changed Nigerian TV. It showed that drama could be real, could educate, and could move a nation. Many agree it helped lay the foundation for what would become Nollywood.

9. AMVCA 2020 – FATHER AND SON ON ONE NIGHT The Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards 2020 gave me one of my proudest moments.

My son [Tosin] and I made history as the first father-son pair to win on the same night. I received the Lifetime Industry Merit Award.

Tosin on his part picked up award for Best Picture Editor. On that stage, I dedicated my award to my wife, Dele. She raised our children largely alone while I was on set, in the studio, chasing stories. That night was not just about me. It was about family, sacrifice, and legacy.

he District Governor of Rotary International District 9112, Rotarian Olayioye Abidoye, has pledged to deepen the organisation’s humanitarian interventions by expanding investments in healthcare, education, youth development and emergency response across communities within the district during the 2026–2027 Rotary year.

Speaking during his inauguration as the third District Governor of Rotary International District 9112 in Lagos, recently, Abidoye called on Rotarians, partners and philanthropists to support the organisation’s life-changing projects, stressing that collective generosity remains the cornerstone of Rotary’s mission of service above self.

Expressing gratitude to God, his family and members of Rotary for their support throughout his leadership journey, Abidoye said he was humbled by the confidence reposed in him and committed to building on the district’s humanitarian achievements.

People From Nigeria to Russia: Dorcas Akanbi’s Inspiring Journey to Medical Excellence Seven years after leaving Nigeria with two bags and a dream of becoming a doctor, Dr Dorcas Akanbi, daughter of THISDAY’s Deputy Sunday Editor, Festus Akanbi, has emerged as one of the top graduates of Rostov State Medical University in Russia, earning an outstanding 4.90 CGPA and delivering her valedictory speech in fluent Russia, writes Sunday Ehigiator

F

or many young Nigerians who dream of becoming doctors, the journey often begins with a desire to save lives, but for Dr Dorcas Eniola Akanbi, that dream started long before she stepped into a university classroom.

Inspired by the story of renowned American neurosurgeon and former United States presidential candidate Ben Carson, she set her sights on medicine at the age of eight. Today, that childhood dream has blossomed into an extraordinary achievement.

Akanbi recently graduated from Rostov State Medical University in Russia with a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 4.90 out of a possible 5.00, placing her among the institution’s best graduating students.

Her accomplishment has drawn admiration from Nigerians at home and abroad, not only because of her academic excellence but also because she delivered her valedictory speech fluently in Russian.

Announcing her induction into the medical profession on the social media platform X, the new doctor expressed gratitude for her journey from Nigeria to Russia. “I have finally been inducted into the medical profession; one of the BGS (Best Graduating Students) with a CGPA of 4.90/5.00. From UNILAG to Russia, God did it. Dr Akanbi D.E,” she wrote.

The achievement has since resonated across social media, where many Nigerians praised her academic record and applauded her ability to master a foreign language while pursuing one of the world’s most demanding courses.

A Dream Born in Childhood Speaking in Russian during her valedictory address, Akanbi reflected on the inspiration that set her on the path to medicine. “‘If you can dream it, you can achieve it.’ After reading Ben Carson’s story since I was

8, I knew medicine was where I was meant to go.”

The statement offered a glimpse into the determination that would later define her educational journey.

Seven years earlier, she had left Nigeria for Russia carrying little more than hope and ambition.

“Seven years ago, I arrived in Russia with my two bags, big dreams and a bright hope. I could not have known how exactly my life would play out, but by the grace of God, I have become far beyond what I had imagined,” she told the audience.

Her journey began with preparatory studies in Maykop before she relocated to Rostov in 2020, just as the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted education systems worldwide.

“After my padfak in the city of Maykop, I moved to Rostov in 2020, the peak of COVID. My first year was not the smoothest, as we had to fully commit to online classes for the whole academic year. I only got to meet my coursemates for the first time at the beginning of my second year,” she recalled.

For many students, adapting to a new academic environment during a global pandemic would have been challenging enough. But for Akanbi, there was another major hurdle: language.

Conquering the Russian Language One of the most remarkable aspects of Akanbi’s story is her mastery of Russian fluently, culminating in a confident valedictory speech delivered entirely in the language.

She admitted that learning Russian was initially overwhelming. “Getting familiar with the Russian language was, for me, very difficult. The only words I knew while leaving my country, Nigeria, were yes and no,” she said. The challenge was magnified by the demands of studying medicine.

“It felt impossible to speak proficiently, let alone study one of the hardest courses in the world in one

“Yet rather than discouraging her, the difficulty became a source of motivation. “But I love challenges, and that is one of the reasons why I chose one of the best universities in Russia and a beautiful city such as Rostov,” she added.

Her eventual success illustrates the power of perseverance and adaptability. By graduation day, she was not merely conversant in Russian; she was capable of addressing an audience of university administrators, faculty members, graduates and guests with eloquence and confidence.

More Than Academic Excellence While her academic record stands out, Akanbi’s

university experience extended well beyond the classroom. One of the themes of her speech was the importance of pursuing a balanced student life.

“One of my goals was to have an active student life outside academics. I am happy to say that RostGMU gave me that,” she said.

Her involvement in extracurricular activities was extensive. “In 2024, I contested for Miss RostGMU as the only foreigner and came out second,” she revealed.

She also served actively in the students’ association, volunteering her musical talents at school and charitable events. “I was also a proud member of the students’ association, where I volunteered to sing in school and non-profit events.”

C

an you take us a bit through your background with regards to values which are important to you as a leader?

My leadership journey has been shaped by different experiences; as a pharmacist, corporate executive, pastor, leadership coach, wife, mother, and now the convener of Voice of Africa Leadership Summit (VOALS). Across every season, one thing has remained constant: leadership is about service.

The values that guide me are integrity, excellence, humility, courage, and stewardship. They are my non-negotiable values. I believe leadership is less about titles and more about responsibility.

It’s about leaving people, organisations, and communities better than you met them. I also believe deeply in raising others. Success means very little to me if I’m the only one sitting at the table. My faith has also shaped how I lead. I see leadership as a calling, and that perspective influences every decision I make.

What inspired the VOALS and why was Nairobi, Kenya, chosen as the inaugural host city?

VOALS was born from years of conversations with leaders across different countries. I realised that while Africa has incredibly talented leaders, we don’t often create spaces where we

can honestly discuss the realities of leadership beyond strategy and success stories. We talk about leadership, but we don’t always talk about the loneliness, the difficult decisions, the personal sacrifices, or how to build institutions that will outlive us. Nairobi felt like the right place to begin. Kenya has become a significant hub for innovation, entrepreneurship, and leadership on the continent. It also represents East Africa’s growing influence in shaping Africa’s future.

Starting there symbolizes exactly what VOALS stands for, bringing different voices across Africa together to learn from one another rather than operating in silos.

I never want people to leave inspired but unsure what to do next. Every participant will leave with practical leadership tools they can immediately apply, from executive presence and strategic communication to mentorship, influence, personal branding, AI in leadership, and building sustainable careers. More importantly, they’ll leave with accountability. VOALS is not designed to be another conference that ends with applause.

It’s designed to start a leadership journey that continues long after August. We will be honouring women whose achievements in their fields have set them apart, with dedicated awards during the summit.

With VOALS centering on ‘The Leadership Renaissance,’ looking across Africa’s diverse landscapes, what specific leadership gaps or challenges on the continent are you aiming to address?

One of the biggest gaps I see is that many of us have competent leaders but not enough intentional leadership development. We often promote people based on technical expertise without equipping them to lead people, build culture, communicate vision, or create sustainable systems. Another gap is collaboration. Africa has brilliant minds across every sector, but we don’t always leverage our collective strengths.

What was the specific catalyst or gap in the African leadership landscape that inspired you to convene the maiden Voice of Africa Leadership Summit?

The catalyst was seeing too many exceptional people carrying enormous potential but lacking access to the right conversations, mentorship, and networks. Leadership shouldn’t depend on proximity to opportunity or geography. Whether someone is in Lagos, Nairobi, Kigali, or Accra, they deserve access to world-class leadership conversations. VOALS is my response to that gap.

It’s creating a platform where leaders don’t just exchange business cards; they exchange wisdom, perspectives, and opportunities that can shape the future of Africa.

Oba Lateef Adams: As Fashion Designer, I Made Clothes for Presidents Babangida, Obasanjo, Jonathan His Royal Majesty, Oba Lateef Adams, the Onikate of Ikate Kingdom in Surulere, Lagos State embodies an uncommon blend of entrepreneurial excellence, family values and purposeful traditional leadership. Long before ascending the throne in 2016, he had built a formidable reputation as one of Nigeria’s pioneering fashion entrepreneurs. Through Latris Fashion, his fashion house, he helped redefine indigenous menswear, earning national recognition as Fashion House of the Year award in 1990 from the renowned Daily Times. As he celebrates 10 years on the throne and sets out to empower his subjects this coming weeks, Oba Adams speaks to Bennett Oghifo on life, childhood, fashion, ascension to the throne, legacy and accomplishments:

W

hat was your background like growing up and the transition you can point to in your journey to eventually ascending the throne of your forebears?

I come from a normal background, definitely not from a wealthy family. I am from a middleclass family at the time and my father worked at the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) and he was the kind of father who wanted all his children to be educated. I didn’t know I was from a royal family back then. That’s the truth. I was only aware that on the side of my mother, who is from Shagamu in Ogun State, they were of royal blood. You know a typical mother who loves her son would be protective of him and guide him as much as possible. So, when we went to her hometown, she went to make efforts for me to be protected spiritually and she was told by the people that they saw a crown on the head of her son. I was in my twenties at the time but I didn’t know where that was going to come from, because I didn’t know my father was from a royal family. So, my life just continued from there normally, I wasn’t looking for royalty or chasing a crown.

I always cherished working hard to make a living and forge a good reputation. Before I became king, people knew me as the Founder and Chairman of Latris Fashion and I was known to many journalists back then.

Your name was known everywhere through the years of running Latris Fashion.

Did it ever occur to you at that time that you could become king one day?

Just as I said, I didn’t have it in mind. I only believed in myself and my job. And I was fully focused on that. I didn’t think about becoming king and definitely didn’t campaign for it. My kingship came from God and despite the prophecy I spoke about regarding a crown on my head, I never held onto that thought.

Did you begin to trace your background or position yourself for the throne after you heard that, since many people would become fixated and start working towards it once they are told such?

No, I didn’t dwell on it. I didn’t have time for it. My job made me happy, it gave me a name,

and put me in the company of important people.

It was my job in fashion that connected me to people like MKO Abiola, and later to notable Nigerians like President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. I made clothes for President Babangida, President Obasanjo, President Goodluck Jonathan, the only one I didn’t make clothes for was the late President Buhari.

Looking back at your years in the fashion industry, would you say that prepared you for the role you play now?

I really wouldn’t say anything about the fashion industry preparing me for kingship today. I just had to prepare myself, essentially, making up my mind to do what is necessary for this community so they would not just have a king but one they would be proud of. My fashion background only taught me how to serve customers well; it didn’t teach me how to be a king.

At what point did the process towards the throne of Onikate of Ikate Surulere actually begin?

It started before my 50th birthday, over 20 years ago. I’ll be 73 years by December this year. I was called, although I didn’t seek it myself. The family that called me didn’t personally know me; only the Oloriebi (family head) knew my father, because I used to drive my father to the Palace of the Onitire. My father was a chief from the ruling house; not just an ordinary chief, but an important chief who was also from the ruling house of Ikate.

He was the Mayegun of Itire at the time, he handled land documentation for the town and served, in effect, as the Secretary to the palace. I used to drive him there whenever he had no one else to take him. But years later, in the year 2016 destiny played out. I was appointed the Onikate of Ikate and a Staff of Office was presented to me by the Lagos State Government. My rise to the throne took 13 odd years and I eventually had the last laugh because Ikate was elevated; Ikate Surulere was under a Baale from time immemorial. But to my credit, the support of my lovely wife, my subjects and people, it was elevated to beaded crown status.

But you met a lot of influential people through your fashion business. Has that network helped you in your role as a

Yes, of course. The destiny is there. The royal blood is there. I’ll always give credit to Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the role he played in my journey to becoming king. I believe God had already prepared the way, but there are people who help push you toward your destiny in good time.

Looking back over these 10 years on the throne, what would you say are achievements recorded for the Ikate community?

I thank God for choosing me to be king here, because this place was in a difficult state. Anyone in this community can testify to what I have done and what I continue to do. As a King, it is my mandate to not only be the traditional ruler and father figure to the Surulere community, but my desire is to bring about effective development and welfare of the community. I am very active in the community by constantly representing and engaging all stakeholders on how to continuously improve the affairs of Surulere Ikate. One of the many key developments introduced by me is the new residential Palace befitting of a

Foundation Reaffirms Commitment to Early Childhood Care, Development

aple Leaf Early Years Foundation has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) in Nigeria.

The Foundation stated this following its participation in a two-day Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) contract signing workshop organised by the Federal Ministry of Education/ World Bank under the IDEAS-TVET Project in Abuja.

The event brought together successful ECCD Training Service Providers from across the country, with Maple Leaf Early Years Foundation emerging as one of the selected organisations to implement the World Bank-supported ECCD training programme.

The workshop provided participants with in-depth

knowledge on project implementation procedures, contractual obligations, safeguarding and child protection, communication methods for children with diverse needs, reporting and monitoring requirements, the National Skills Qualification (NSQ) Framework, and the roles and responsibilities of Early Childhood practitioners and Training Service Providers.

Speaking after the workshop, the Executive Director of Maple Leaf Early Years Foundation, Mrs. Ifedinma Nwigwe, described the engagement as a significant milestone for the Foundation.

She said the training had strengthened the Foundation’s capacity to deliver quality ECCD programmes in line with the National ECCD Framework and the objectives of the IDEAS-TVET Project.

Nwigwe noted that the knowledge gained during the workshop would enable the Foundation to

effectively implement the World Bank-supported ECCD training programme while adhering to national standards and project expectations.

She reaffirmed Maple Leaf Early Years Foundation’s commitment to partnering with the Federal Ministry of Education and other stakeholders to strengthen the capacity of ECCD practitioners and contribute to improving learning outcomes for young children across Nigeria.

“We are very grateful for the opportunity to be selected as one of the implementers of the World Bank-supported ECCD training programme. We appreciate the confidence reposed in our capacity.

“But we are equally very happy that this workshop was put together to strengthen the capacity of all selected organisations. It was quite helpful and now we are good to go,” Nwigwe added.

My belief is that when you are king over a community, you must ensure your people benefit from your presence, you must provide facilities for them so they can be happy. Look at the roads here now; they weren’t like this before. We made sure the roads in this area were fixed, because good roads make people happy and protect their vehicles. And look at how that has positively impacted the value of landed property unlike what obtained before I became king. A plot of land here sold for maybe N8million and the most expensive plots were about 20 million.

You spent about 13 years pursuing the stool before you were finally crowned. Those must have been difficult years. What kept you motivated?

When they first approached me about becoming king, I initially turned it down.

By the time they called me, everything had already been arranged, my ruling house, the Omo Lamina Akinwunmi ruling house, had signed documents in support of my candidacy, following directives from our Oloriebi, the Wahabi Irawo. But when I asked whether there was even a palace structure in place, there wasn’t one, and I decided to hold off and continue with the Baale title to avoid unnecessary stress. What changed my mind was a conversation at a party between the son of Alhaji Wahabi Irawo, Fatai Irawo, who is the Oba of Odi Olowo Mushin and popular musician, King Sunny Ade. We were talking with King Sunny Ade before the party began and after he was told, he told me Baale wouldn’t give me much but that I would be superior if I became a king. That conversation was what pushed me to pursue it seriously and despite the fact that there was no opposition to my candidacy, it still took time. It was even published in The Punch at the time without objection after appearing at the Tribunal and nobody raised any objection and the process began under our current President, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu. The process moved forward under Governor Raji Fashola with whom I was always in close contact, even at Bourdillon and he encourage me to keep going while assuring me of his support.

BNPL, described by financial media site Investopedia as a short‑term loan that lets shoppers pay for products in structured instalments, allows immediate acquisition of goods while deferring full payment.

This offer has for long provided relief to individuals on tight budgets, as mostly embraced by retailers trading in product categories such as smartphones, home appliances, electronics and luxury clothing, among others.

Amid shrinking spending power, BNPL is evolving into one of the fastest-growing consumer credit segments, offering both individuals and businesses new ways to manage cash flow.

But as convenient and flexible as this offer allowing the immediate possession of an item with payment spread over up to six months may be, it also conceals a potential trap.

Globally and locally, data points to BNPL’s growing acceptance, with a very promising outlook.

Currently valued at $1.88 billion, Nigeria’s BNPL market is projected to reach $3.96 billion by 2031, positioning it as Africa’s fastest-expanding credit market, driven largely by growth in the digital economy and fintech space.

Across the globe, the trend is not dissimilar.

A report by Fortune Business Insights valued the global BNPL market at $44.9 billion in 2025 and projected it will reach $286 billion by 2034, fueled by rising e-commerce, digital payments, and consumer preference for flexible credit.

While Nigeria still trails advanced economies in structured consumer credit, local players are actively filling the space. Providers like CredPal, Carbon Zero, EasyBuy, and CDcare enable shoppers to purchase products immediately and pay

over several weeks or months. Depending on the provider and the user’s repayment history, some plans are interest-free, while others attract service charges or financing fees.

Incumbent e-commerce firms are also exploring the space. In 2024, Jumia Nigeria launched a partnership with EasyBuy and CredPal to enable shoppers pay for purchases in instalments directly at checkout.

Experts note that BNPL fills a critical gap by helping households ease cash-flow pressures, while supporting business growth by allowing enterprises to pay suppliers more confidently.

Even so, they warn this can be financially risky and costly. An economist, Zhu Wang in a research paper published by the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, argued that the BNPL model has mixed welfare effects—functioning as a vital cash-flow buffer for some households while accelerating debt accumulation for others.

Investopedia highlights specific consumer risks, including overspending, limited regulatory oversight, and complex return or refund issues.

Broadly, it warned that BNPL can tempt consumers to overspend because instalments make large purchases feel cheaper. It also cautioned that limited

regulation leaves consumers exposed.

Also to take cognisance of are the terms of purchase, given that risks of hidden fees and penalties can quickly erode the benefits?

But even sellers remain exposed to repayment default from buyers. A study by the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) found BNPL users are typically younger, with lower credit scores and higher delinquency rates.

“Success is no longer determined solely by what one knows but by who one knows and how effectively one collaborates,” he said, describing networking as a necessity for personal success, institutional advancement and global relevance.

According to him, meaningful professional relationships create access to information, mentorship, funding, business referrals and collaborations that conventional channels often fail to provide.

Such relationship capital, he noted, has become as valuable as financial capital in today’s knowledge-driven economy.

Oyedokun stressed that many employment opportunities and leadership appointments are secured through referrals long before they are publicly advertised, urging professionals to cultivate authentic, long-term relationships built on trust and value creation.

He said alumni networks, when properly mobilised, could strengthen business growth, improve graduate employability, facilitate research partnerships, expand mentorship and attract investment for universities.

“The strength of the alumni network lies in its collective capacity to open doors that individual effort cannot. Traditional job hunting reveals only about 20 per cent of available opportunities.

Networking uncovers the remaining 80 per cent through trusted referrals rather than public advertisements,” he added.

He, however, identified weak alumni engagement, poor personal branding, limited digital networking skills and inadequate networking platforms as barriers preventing many professionals from maximising available opportunities.

Heike Harmgart: I’m Amazed Nigerian Businesses Thrive Despite High Power Cost The Managing Director for Sub-Saharan Africa at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), Heike Harmgart, outlines the bank’s expansion plans, investment pipeline for Nigeria, and explains why fixing the power sector is critical to unlocking private investment. Nume Ekeghe presents the excerpts

our new Lagos office is part of your Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) strategy. What is the roadmap for opening additional offices, which countries are next?

The Lagos office is the first of our five new countries of operation, namely Nigeria, Kenya, Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire and Benin. I am travelling from here to open the Dakar office next week, so Senegal is next.

We will officially open our Nairobi office in September, while Abidjan and Cotonou will follow in October and November. By the end of the year, we expect to have opened offices in all five countries. Ghana will become the sixth office. The application for Ghana to become a member and shareholder is currently before Parliament, so we are waiting for that process to conclude. We are already open for business in all five countries and, in our very first year of operations, we have invested roughly $500 million across different markets in a variety of sectors in SSA. Also, with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) now operational, how does the EBRD intend to align its investments with the agreement to boost intra-African trade?

On the African Continental Free Trade Area, supporting intra-African and global trade is one of our priorities. One of the first transactions we signed in Nigeria was a $100 million trade finance line with Access Bank. That facility will enable Access Bank to access confirming banks across Africa and internationally, making it much easier for Nigerian importers and exporters to obtain pre-import and post-export financing. Next week, we will also sign a smaller trade finance facility with Ecobank in Senegal, while our board has approved another major trade finance transaction for KCB in Kenya. Trade finance is therefore one of the key instruments through which we intend to support African trade.

The development finance space in Africa is already crowded with institutions such as the AfDB, IFC and AFC. What unique

On the question of competition, I would say we complement rather than compete with existing institutions. We have been investing in North Africa for the past 12 years, committing roughly $2 billion annually across Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia. When we entered those markets, people also asked why we were going there when institutions such as the African Development Bank and IFC were already present. Today, we invest about $2 billion every year there. There are three main ways we differentiate ourselves.

Firstly, we have very strong local operational teams. Hamza and I only relocated from Cairo in October, yet we already have 16 staff in Lagos and have hired about 100 professionals across the continent. These are Nigerian investment bankers, Senegalese lawyers, Kenyan environmental specialists and many others. They understand their markets and lead our transactions. Secondly,

we place significant emphasis on local currency financing. We are already working on accessing the Nigerian naira and Kenyan shilling because local currency lending is an important contribution we can make. Thirdly, because we have strong local teams, we are able to finance much smaller transactions even projects of around $1 million rather than focusing only on very large deals.

Our previous expansions have shown that, after a few years, we consistently identify opportunities that others may have overlooked because of our local presence and expertise.

You mentioned investing around $2 billion annually in North Africa. How much has been invested in Nigeria so far, and what are your targets now that you have established an office in Lagos?

The $2 billion annual investment relates to Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia combined. Nigeria

only became an EBRD shareholder in July 2025 and became a country of operation in October 2025. Before then, we could not invest in Nigeria.

Since October 2025, we have invested including the trade finance approximately $280 million, of that amount, $100 million was invested between October and December 2025, while another $180 million has been invested since January.

We are entirely demand-driven. We do not allocate a fixed investment envelope for each country. If there are many good projects, we will invest more. We have only recently established our office and recruited our team, so it will take time to build our pipeline. Nevertheless, I am very proud of the team have already achieved $280 million in investments within less than a year. This year is looking good, and I think it would scale up in time. We expect investments this year to exceed $300 million. Over the next three years, our expectation is that we would do a minimum total of $1.5 billion in Nigeria. That is an estimate, and I hope we exceed it. We have the capital, ambitious shareholders and we just had a meeting with Nigeria’s Minister of Finance, who represents Nigeria on our Board and we want to respond. We have capital and we want to work on good projects. We are willing to take some risks, but we also have to be balancing how much risk we are taking.

Will financing for Project Bridge remain focused on the Federal Government and Banks, or could similar support be extended to state governments?

Globally, around 80 per cent of our financing goes to the private sector, while roughly 20 per cent goes to governments. That ratio may differ from year to year depending on available projects.

We also finance cities directly. For example, we have projects with Alexandria in Egypt and Tangier in Morocco involving transport, waste management and electricity. Depending on the financial strength of a city, we may lend with or without a sovereign guarantee. Given Lagos State’s financial standing and domestic credit profile, it is certainly possible to work directly with the state government.

srael Fagbemigun did not set out to become a communications strategist. He entered Obafemi Awolowo University to study microbiology, but student union politics and campus journalism redirected his career.

“I watched how the same set of facts could either move people to action or leave them indifferent, depending entirely on how they were communicated,” he recalls.

Rather than following a structured career model, he followed instinct. “Microbiology was what I studied; communication was what I could not stop doing. When you find the thing, you would do whether or not anyone paid you for it, that is usually your calling asking for your attention.”

Today, as CEO of ISFAG Communications Limited, he believes communication has evolved beyond media visibility into a core business and governance function capable of shaping public confidence, institutional reputation and policy

outcomes.

For Fagbemigun, one principle underpins effective communication: understanding people before speaking to them. “You cannot communicate to a public you do not understand. Visibility is easy; anyone can be loud. Trust is earned, and it is earned by first listening.”

His approach rejects desk-based assumptions in favour of direct engagement. “I get on the streets.

I sit with people to understand their feelings, their frustrations, their realities, and then I gather their testimonies in their own words. Only then do I speak, because now I am not speaking at them; I am speaking for them.”

He advises young professionals to resist the temptation to prioritise visibility over understanding. “The communicators people trust are the ones who clearly understand the people they are speaking to.”

That philosophy has guided his transition from

journalism into strategic advisory roles.

Reflecting on his career, he identifies three defining stages. The first was learning the fundamentals of journalism through campus reporting, Nigerian Cable News and broadcast work at Ondo TV. “This is where I learned how information actually moves, how a story is built, how a newsroom makes decisions, and what makes an audience pay attention.”

The second stage came while serving as media aide to former Ondo State Governor Olusegun Mimiko, where he moved from reporting decisions to participating in decision-making.

“I learned how power communicates, and just as importantly, how it should communicate but often fails to.”The third stage involved advising House Committees in the National Assembly and later the Nigeria Immigration Service, where communication became a long-term strategic

Repositioning Customs as Nigeria’s Economic Powerhouse

The Nigeria Customs Service has emerged as one of the federal government’s strongest-performing revenue agencies, thanks to a sweeping reform agenda driven by Comptroller-General Bashir Adewale Adeniyi. From record-breaking revenue generation and digital transformation to enhanced trade facilitation and border security, Adeniyi’s leadership is steadily repositioning the Customs as a strategic institution supporting Nigeria’s economic growth and fiscal sustainability, writes Oluchi Chibuzor

W

hen Bashir Adewale Adeniyi assumed office as Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) in June 2023, he inherited an organisation facing enormous expectations. Revenue generation was under pressure, trade facilitation required urgent reforms, border security demanded greater efficiency, and stakeholders sought a Customs administration capable of balancing enforcement with economic growth.

Three years later, the results of those reforms are becoming increasingly evident. The recent approval by the Senate of a 2026 revenue target of N11.074 trillion and an expenditure proposal of N1.295 trillion for the Nigeria Customs Service is more than a routine legislative exercise.

It is a strong vote of confidence in the reforms being implemented under Adeniyi’s leadership and a recognition of Customs’ growing importance in Nigeria’s economic transformation.

Perhaps the clearest indication of that confidence came from members of the Senate Committee on Customs, Excise and Tariffs, who openly commended the Customs management for its remarkable achievements in revenue generation, anti-smuggling operations and trade facilitation. Their endorsement reflected the growing perception that the Service has become one of the federal government’s most dependable revenue-generating institutions.

Despite an approved revenue target of about N6.58 trillion in 2025, the Service generated more than N7.27 trillion, exceeding its target by over N674 billion. Such performance came at a time when government fiscal incentives—including import duty waivers on compressed natural gas (CNG), electric vehicles, healthcare equipment, raw materials and capital machinery—were deliberately designed to stimulate investment rather than maximise Customs collections. In other words, the Customs under Adeniyi generated more revenue while supporting broader government economic policies aimed at industrialisation and business growth.

That delicate balancing act underscores the philosophy the Adewale Customs CG has consistently promoted—that the NCS should the indigenous Unified Customs Information System (UCIS), not merely collect revenue but also facilitate legitimate trade, popularly known as B’Odogwu, represents one of the Service’s strengthen national competitiveness and contribute to economic most ambitious digital transformation initiatives in recent years. development.

he strength of any nation’s currency lies not only in the economic policies that support it but also in the confidence its citizens place in every banknote they use.

Every day, millions of Nigerians exchange the naira for goods and services without giving much thought to the legal foundation that makes those transactions possible.

Yet, recent reports of some businesses and individuals rejecting the standard N100 banknote have highlighted the need for greater public awareness about one of the country’s most widely circulated denominations.

Recognising the importance of maintaining confidence in the national currency, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has reaffirmed that the standard N100 banknote remains legal tender and should be accepted for all transactions nationwide. In doing so, the apex bank is reinforcing a fundamental principle that underpins the nation’s financial system.

The clarification became necessary following reports that some traders, businesses and members of the public had begun refusing the standard N100 note, apparently believing it had been replaced by the commemorative N100 banknote introduced during Nigeria’s centenary celebrations.

The CBN has now made it unequivocally clear that such assumptions are incorrect.

According to the regulator both the commemorative N100 banknote and the standard N100 banknote are valid legal tender. The commemorative note was issued as a special edition to celebrate Nigeria’s centenary and was never intended to replace the existing standard version.

In a statement signed by the Acting Director of the Corporate Communications Department, Mrs. Hakama Sidi-Ali, the apex bank reminded Nigerians that every banknote officially issued by the CBN retains its legal status unless formally withdrawn by the Bank.

Sidi-Ali explained: “The CBN strongly cautions individuals, businesses, financial institutions, and other economic agents against rejecting the standard N100 banknote. Such rejection constitutes a violation of the provisions of the CBN Act and undermines confidence in the national currency.”

That message carries significance beyond the N100

collection and enhanced operational efficiency across Customs commands. Technology has also transformed enforcement.

Rather than relying solely on traditional border patrols, the Service has increasingly embraced intelligence-led operations, geospatial surveillance and sophisticated risk management systems to combat smuggling while facilitating legitimate trade. This approach has enabled Customs to focus resources on high-risk transactions without creating unnecessary bottlenecks for compliant importers and exporters.

These reforms have not gone unnoticed as the Presidential Enabling Business Environment Council (PEBEC) recently recognised the NCS as the most improved government agency in trade facilitation and ease of doing business—an achievement that reflects years of sustained institutional reforms rather than isolated interventions. For businesses operating in Nigeria, improved Customs procedures translate into faster cargo clearance, lower transaction costs, greater predictability and increased investor confidence. These are critical ingredients for attracting investment and enhancing Nigeria’s competitiveness under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Adeniyi has also positioned the Service as an active participant in Africa’s expanding regional trade architecture.

Recognising that AfCFTA offers enormous opportunities for Nigerian businesses, Customs has strengthened collaboration with the AfCFTA Secretariat, the African Development Bank and neighbouring customs administrations to improve cross-border trade. Plans to study successful joint border management systems in Southern Africa demonstrate a willingness to adopt international best practices that could further enhance regional commerce.

Beyond technology and trade facilitation, revenue optimisation has remained a central focus. The Service has expanded postclearance audits, strengthened systems audits, improved compliance monitoring and enhanced revenue recovery mechanisms.

These initiatives have not only increased government earnings but have also promoted greater accountability and transparency within Customs operations. Yet Adeniyi has been careful to acknowledge that Customs’ performance does not occur in isolation.

Global events—from the Russia-Ukraine conflict to tensions in the Middle East affecting shipping through the Strait of Hormuz—continue to influence international trade flows, import volumes and government revenues. By openly identifying these external risks while maintaining ambitious revenue projections, the Customs leadership has demonstrated both realism and confidence in its reform agenda.

Once individuals begin choosing which officially issued banknotes to accept or reject based on misinformation or personal preference, that trust begins to weaken.

For ordinary Nigerians, the consequences could be immediate. A market woman receiving payment for her goods should never worry that her earnings will be rejected elsewhere simply because they include standard N100 notes. A commercial driver should not refuse passengers who tender valid currency.

Small businesses, roadside traders and neighbourhood shops depend on seamless cash circulation to sustain daily economic activities.

When legal tender is arbitrarily rejected, it creates unnecessary hardship for consumers, slows commercial transactions and undermines public confidence in the monetary system.

This is precisely why the central bank acted promptly to clarify the issue. The regulator also reminded businesses and financial institutions that refusing valid currency is not simply an inconvenience to customers—it constitutes a breach of the law.

“The bank will not hesitate to apply appropriate enforcement measures against any person or entity found to be in breach,” the statement warned.

Beyond enforcement, however, the CBN’s intervention represents an important exercise in public education.

Modern central banks perform responsibilities that extend far beyond issuing currency and setting interest rates. They also play a critical role in preserving public confidence in the financial system by ensuring that citizens understand how the monetary system works.

Confidence remains one of the most valuable assets any currency possesses. The value of the naira depends not only on economic fundamentals but also on the willingness of Nigerians to trust and use every legitimate banknote issued by the monetary authorities.

This is why the apex bank reiterated its commitment to protecting the integrity of the naira and ensuring smooth currency circulation across the country.

“The bank remains committed to safeguarding the integrity

of the Naira, ensuring confidence in all duly issued banknotes, and promoting smooth currency circulation across the country,” Sidi-Ali stated.

For Nigerians, the clarification also serves as an important reminder of their civic responsibility.

Citizenship extends beyond voting, paying taxes or obeying traffic regulations. It also involves respecting national institutions and supporting policies that promote economic stability.

Accepting every valid naira note is one simple but meaningful way of contributing to a more efficient and trusted financial system.

The standard N100 banknote has served Nigerians faithfully for decades. It remains one of the most widely used denominations for transportation, retail purchases, school expenses, food items and countless everyday transactions across urban and rural communities.

Its continued circulation supports financial inclusion by ensuring that millions of Nigerians, particularly those operating in the informal economy, can conduct daily business without unnecessary disruption.

Godswill Nwosu: Celebrating a Life of Purpose, Selfless Service Chinedu Zephaniah

I

n the same manner that a shooting star momentarily adorns the sky before fading from view, this great man briefly, but surely, illuminated the world for 48 years.

Godswill Nwosu was born on June 11, 1977, to the humble Christian trading family of Sir and Lady Zephaniah Nwosu of Uruagu, Nnewi, Anambra State. And over the course of his 48 years, he touched innumerable lives, served in the church and his community, built a great family, and impacted generations with his humility and unrelenting philanthropy.

Trained as a Mechanical Engineer at the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi, he approached life with a solution-driven mindset and efficiency that made solving monumental problems look simple. After completing his NYSC in 2001, he told his father that he would not work for anyone for a single day. His audacious ambition stood on his trading experience over the years, being part of the family business alongside his two elder brothers, Dr. Chinedu Zephaniah and Sir Tochukwu Nwosu.

Immediately after his NYSC in Kano, he returned to the family trade in Aba. There, he had a brief refresher course before receiving capital from his father to begin his own business. He expanded rapidly, relocated to Abuja, and became a household name in Nigeria’s telecom industry.

He founded G-Wills Nigeria Limited, becoming MTN, Glo, Airtel, and T2 Mobile Trade Partners for Niger State.

He also established the Tranquila Hotels 1 & 2 in Abuja, demonstrating the astute business acumen that brought him remarkable growth and achievement within a short period of time.

As a devoted Christian, his commitment to kingdom service and the propagation of the gospel was exemplary across every congregation in the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), to which he belonged at different times in his life.

As a member of the Vicar Society at the Cathedral Church of Advent, Life Camp, Abuja, his passion for soul-winning and building the church was so glaring.

He always volunteered and served beyond the usual, committing his time, talent and wealth to every project of God’s kingdom.

In his hometown, Chinemeze Nnewi, as he was titled, was recognised by his people as a beacon of hope for the downtrodden and a large-hearted philanthropist. His G-Wills Foundation has awarded over 100 scholarships and provided financial assistance to numerous widows.

Countless members of his immediate family and community are gainfully employed with the federal government by his efforts. He consistently pushed for the development of the community in education, health and other aspects.

In 2023, after several unsuccessful attempts to secure State Government support for infrastructure development in his village, he singlehandedly rebuilt the major Uruagu-Nnewi Road (St Mary’s Road), which connects the community to Oraifite. The project brought new life to businesses and all who rely on the road for their livelihoods.

He married his wife, Uzoamaka Nwosu (nee Udeogu), in 2004, and their union was blessed with four children - Chigozirim, Mmesoma, Oluoma, and Chimamaka. As a husband and father, the love and devotion he gave was a steady Nwosu light in his family’s life. His heartfelt insistence that his children attend schools close to his home and office ensured he was always available to share memorable moments and weave precious memories they now cherish deeply.

Equally, his parents, siblings, and cousins all remember the warmth and rare depth of his love and affection.

Their voices echo the immense presence he brought to their lives; a presence now missed beyond words.

Many people say that good things do not last. But really, this good man will endure, given the huge impact he made on his family, the body of Christ, his community, the poor, and humanity at large. Truly, the measure of a life is not in length but in impact.

with his work finished and his name unblemished. At 48, many people would still be planning their legacy, but Chinemeze had already built his ― in the family, the church, community, boardrooms and in the lives of people, many of whom are mourning him today.

His life was a testament of what one soul can mean to so many. He leaves behind a legacy stitched into the fabric of countless hearts. Though his time was short, the brilliance of his spirit will shine on, casting light and hope wherever his memory is held.

Zenith Bank: Offering Lifeline, Support for Women in Benue IDP Camps

In the face of displacement and hardship, Zenith Bank Plc is restoring hope and dignity to vulnerable women and girls in Benue State through a life-changing intervention that addresses menstrual hygiene and sexual and gender-based violence, writes Omolabake Fasogbon

or thousands of women and girls living in Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps in Benue State, daily life is defined by uncertainty. Having fled violence and insecurity, many now face the battle of coping with limited access to basic healthcare, menstrual hygiene products and protection from sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV).

In the midst of these challenges, a compassionate intervention by Zenith Bank Plc is helping to restore hope, dignity and confidence to some of Nigeria’s most vulnerable citizens.

In partnership with the Marymine Mother’s Care Initiative Network (MMCIN), Zenith Bank recently supported the launch of the “Protect the Dignity of Our Females” project, a programme designed to improve menstrual hygiene management while raising awareness about sexual and gender-based violence in IDP camps across Benue State.

More than a corporate social responsibility initiative, the project addresses two issues that often receive little attention during humanitarian emergencies.

For many displaced women and girls, the absence of sanitary products and accurate reproductive health information affects their education, health, confidence and participation in community life. At the same time, overcrowded camp conditions expose many to heightened risks of abuse and exploitation.

By supporting this initiative, Zenith Bank is helping to ensure that women and girls not only receive essential menstrual hygiene materials but also gain the knowledge and confidence needed to protect themselves, speak out against abuse and access available support services. The intervention promotes dignity while creating safer spaces where women can begin to rebuild their lives.

The programme also demonstrates a broader understanding that true empowerment extends beyond financial inclusion. It requires investing in people’s well-being, protecting their rights and creating opportunities for them to live healthier and more secure lives.

For beneficiaries, the support goes beyond the distribution of hygiene products. Educational sessions on menstrual health help dispel long-held myths and misconceptions, while conversations around gender-based violence encourage survivors and those at risk to seek help without fear or stigma. Such awareness is critical in communities where silence often allows abuse to continue unchecked.

The initiative reflects Zenith Bank’s longstanding commitment to improving lives through strategic social investments.

Importantly, the Benue intervention aligns with several of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 3 on Good Health and Well-being, Goal 5 on Gender Equality and Goal 10 on Reduced Inequalities. Across Nigeria, millions of people remain displaced by conflict and insecurity. Umeoji pointed out that women lift families, strengthen communities, and expand economic potential for institutions.

According to her, it means removing barriers, building systems that reward competence, and fostering a more equitable society. Additionally, it means valuing women’s contributions and opening doors for the next generation of leaders.

“Kofi Annan, former Secretary-General of the United Nations, captured it well when he said, ‘There is no tool for development more effective than the empowerment of women.’

This means that any society that neglects women effectively forfeits a significant portion of its productive capacity.

“Despite this, significant gender disparities persist globally, often to the disadvantage of women. According to the World Economic Forum’s 2025 report, only 68.8 percent of the global gender gap has been closed. At the current pace, it could take approximately 123 years to achieve full gender parity.

“Here in Nigeria, the situation is even more urgent. We have closed only 64.9 percent of the overall gender gap, leaving a gap of 35.1 percent that still needs to be addressed. In addition, there is a 19.3 percent disparity in labour force participation between men and women in the country.

“These figures cannot be ignored, particularly because the economic benefits of closing this gap are profound. The World Bank suggests that closing gender gaps in employment and entrepreneurship could boost global GDP by more than 20 percent. Similarly, the McKinsey Global Institute estimates that achieving gender parity could add up to $12 trillion to global GDP. “At the country level, McKinsey’s analysis indicates that closing gender gaps in Nigeria’s

Endorsing Access Holdings’ Long-term Strategy

Ahead of Access Holdings Plc’s fourth AGM, dividend concerns fuelled speculation of shareholder unrest. But when investors gathered in Lagos, the meeting unfolded in a remarkably different and positive atmosphere, writes Sunday Ehigiator

T

he atmosphere inside the Balmoral Convention Centre was charged with anticipation as hundreds of shareholders converged for Access Holdings Plc’s fourth Annual General Meeting.

Every seat was occupied as investors arrived prepared to engage the Board and management on issues that had dominated discussions in the days preceding the meeting, particularly the company’s decision not to declare a final dividend for the 2025 financial year. The mood was one of keen interest, with shareholders eager to seek explanations and understand the Group’s direction.

The meeting opened with probing questions on dividends, corporate governance, risk management, capital adequacy and the Group’s expansion strategy. Given the widespread speculation ahead of the AGM, many had expected the proceedings to become contentious. Instead, the exchanges remained robust yet constructive, with management providing detailed explanations on its strategic decisions while shareholders weighed the long-term implications for the business.

As the deliberations progressed, the narrative shifted noticeably. Beyond the dividend debate, shareholders expressed confidence in Access Holdings’ financial performance, endorsed the leadership transition that saw Innocent C. Ike assume the role of Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, and threw their weight behind the company’s “Scale to Value” strategy.

By the close of the meeting, what had been anticipated as a difficult AGM had evolved into a clear affirmation of shareholders’ belief in the Group’s leadership, long-term strategy and commitment to delivering sustainable value.

Confidence Built on Strong Performance

Shareholders’ optimism was underpinned by Access Holdings’ financial performance.

For the 2025 financial year, the Group recorded a Profit Before Tax of 1.007 trillion, while total assets climbed to 51.56 trillion. Customer deposits also recorded significant growth, reinforcing the institution’s market strength and expanding its franchise.

These results convinced many investors that the Group remains fundamentally strong despite operating in a challenging economic environment.

National Coordinator of the Progressive Shareholders Association of Nigeria, Chief Boniface Okezie, summed up the mood when he said: “We must commend the Board and Management. This is a strong performance, and we believe in where the company is going.”

Similarly, National Coordinator of the Pragmatic Shareholders Association of Nigeria, Mrs Adebisi Bakare, observed that the company’s performance had strengthened investor confidence.

“The 2025 performance is strong, and it gives shareholders confidence that the Group is well positioned to sustain growth and deliver long-term value,” she said.

Dividend Concerns, But No Crisis of Confidence The most anticipated discussion centred on the absence of a final dividend for the 2025 financial year. Management explained that the decision was necessitated by regulatory compliance requirements rather than weak financial performance.

Although shareholders sought detailed explanations, the discussion remained constructive, reflecting an understanding that the decision was driven by prudential considerations rather than deteriorating business fundamentals. Chairman Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede explained that “the non-payment of dividend was a consequence of regulatory compliance requirements rather than any deterioration in the Group’s financial performance.”

He assured investors that retaining capital today would ultimately strengthen future returns. “Our approach is clear: capital retained today must translate into greater value tomorrow and sustainable returns for our shareholders,” he said.

The explanation appeared to reassure shareholders, many of whom viewed the temporary sacrifice as necessary to preserve the Group’s long-term growth trajectory.

Endorsement of Leadership

Beyond financial performance, shareholders demonstrated

confidence in the institution’s leadership. All resolutions presented at the AGM received approval, including the appointment of Innocent C. Ike as Group Managing Director/ Chief Executive Officer.

The smooth leadership transition, alongside Board strengthening initiatives, reinforced shareholder confidence that the organisation remains stable and strategically focused.

Rather than viewing the transition as a period of uncertainty, shareholders embraced it as a continuation of Access Holdings’ long-term vision.

From Building Scale to Creating Value The AGM also highlighted the next phase of Access Holdings’ corporate evolution. Having spent years expanding across markets and business segments, management said the Group is now focused on maximising returns from that expansive footprint. According to Aig-Imoukhuede, “Our Strategy, From Scale to Value, reflects the natural evolution of our journey. Scale created opportunity; value creation is how we fully realise it.”

The strategy focuses on improving earnings quality, strengthening operational efficiency, reinforcing capital, and consistently generating returns above the cost of capital.

Echoing that vision, Ike stated: “Our focus is on building a more resilient, more efficient institution that consistently converts its scale into sustainable returns. We are confident that the decisions we are taking today will translate into stronger value for our shareholders in the periods ahead.”

Adefunke Adeyemi: Driving Africa’s Journey to Single Aviation Market

hen more than 950 aviation leaders, heads of state, ministers, directors general of Civil Aviation, regulators, airline executives, airport operators, investors and development partners gathered in Lomé for the inaugural African Air Transport Convention & Expo between June 5 and 19, 2026, the focus was understandably on the decisions that would shape the future of African aviation.

The adoption of the Lomé Declaration and its Implementation Matrix signaled more than the successful conclusion of a landmark gathering. It reflected a growing commitment across the continent to move from ambition to implementation, accelerating the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM) and strengthening aviation’s role in Africa’s economic integration.

Behind that momentum is a new generation of African leaders working to transform aviation from a sector into a strategic driver of development.

Among them is Adefunke Adeyemi, Secretary General of the African Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC), whose leadership has increasingly focused on building the partnerships, policy alignment and institutional collaboration needed to make a connected Africa a reality.

The inaugural Convention itself reflected that approach.

Convened by AFCAC under her leadership, in partnership with the African Union Commission, the AfCFTA Secretariat, and AUDA-NEPAD, it brought together an unprecedented coalition of policymakers, regulators, airlines, airports, investors, development finance institutions, technology providers,F and international partners around a shared vision for Africa’s aviation future.

For Adeyemi, the Convention was never simply about bringing people into the same room. It was about creating the conditions for meaningful collaboration and

measurable progress.

According to her, “Africa is moving beyond conversations about a single sky and towards building a more integrated aviation ecosystem where connectivity becomes a driver of continental growth.”

That philosophy has shaped much of her work throughout

her career.

Long before the renewed momentum around SAATM, Adeyemi was contributing to the evidence base that strengthened the case for greater air connectivity across Africa.

During her time at the International Air Transport Association (IATA), she led the landmark twelve-country Value of Aviation study, demonstrating aviation’s economic contribution across the continent. The study became an important reference in the conversations that supported the launch of SAATM in 2018.

-Her long-held view that the African Continental Free Trade Area creates the market while SAATM connects it has since become an increasingly influential way of understanding the relationship between aviation and economic integration. It also provided a clear strategic thread throughout the discussions in Lomé.

Those who have followed her career recognise a consistent leadership approach. Rather than treating aviation as a standalone industry, she has consistently positioned it as critical infrastructure for trade, investment, tourism, job creation and regional integration.

That perspective was evident throughout the Convention’s agenda, from discussions on improving connectivity and affordability to advancing digital transformation, sustainable aviation, infrastructure investment and human capital development.

The significance of the inaugural African Air Transport Convention & Expo therefore extends beyond the event itself.

It demonstrated what is possible when governments, regulators, industry leaders and development partners align around a common purpose and commit not only to dialogue, but to implementation.

As Africa advances the ambitions of Agenda 2063 and the African Continental Free Trade Area, aviation will play an increasingly important role in determining how efficiently people, goods and opportunities move across the continent.

For leaders like Adefunke Adeyemi, the task now is to sustain the momentum created in Lomé and translate continental commitments into lasting outcomes.

The Convention may have concluded, but the transformation it seeks to accelerate is only just beginning.

From Resource Wealth to Knowledge Wealth Alfred Okoigun

E

very generation inherits a defining challenge, a question that ultimately determines whether it advances or declines.

For the generation of our parents, the question was political independence, but for many third world countries, that emerged after the Second World War, the question bothered on industrialisation.

For our generation, the question is different. It is more complex and calls for a more urgent. and perhaps more consequential response.

The question before us is this: Can Nigeria successfully transform its vast wealth of natural resources into a knowledge-based wealth?

This is because the future will not belong to nations that merely possess natural resources.

On the contrary, it will belong to nations that possess capabilities, nations that can create, innovate, solve problems, and continuously generate value through knowledge.

Do we as a people belong to this category of nations with a value-based knowledge? That is the defining question of our time. The answer to this all-encompassing question will determine whether the Nigerian nation is moving in the right or wrong direction.

When Nigeria gained independence, we were blessed with extraordinary natural endowments including oil, gas, coal and other mineral resources some of which we are getting to know of their existence buried in the ground.

There were agricultural resources from the north to the south with a vast land mass. Palm produce, cocoa, cotton, and groundnuts to mention a few, are still there and ministering to our needs.

We have a strategic geographic location. and most importantly, a large and energetic population of 242 million people, projected to rise by over 130 million by 2050, outpacing the USA to become the third largest population in the world, standing at between 375 and 440 million people.

For decades, our national conversation focused heavily on the resources beneath our soil. But history has taught us an important lesson. Natural resources can create opportunities for employment and as export products that add to our foreign exchange reserves. Beyond helping to cushion our import needs, they add little to our gross domestic primary products and cannot guarantee prosperity.

Resources can generate income, but knowledge creates wealth. Resources can be exhausted while knowledge increases, multiplies and compounds. Resources are inherited but knowledge is built in time and space.

Nations that fail to understand this distinction eventually discover that possessing resources and creating prosperity are not the same thing.

Recalibration

The countries that dominate the global economy today understood this principle early in the day recalibrating their priorities for the future.

South Korea

South Korea’s journey may be one of the most instructive lessons for Nigeria.

In the early 1960s, South Korea was one of the poorer nations of the world, with a national economy worth only a few billion dollars and exports accounting for less than three percent of its GDP. Its leaders made a deliberate choice. They decided that their future would not be determined by what they lacked.

It would be determined by what they built. They invested heavily in education. They invested in engineering. They invested in research, and in technology. Today South Korea is a nearly two-trillion-dollar economy and home to globally dominant companies such as Samsung, Hyundai, LG, and the SK Group.

Its exports account for more than forty percent of GDP, and

Sixty years ago, few people would have imagined such an outcome. That is the power of vision combined with execution.

Singapore

Singapore demonstrates what is possible when a nation commits itself to human capital development. At independence in 1965, Singapore was a small trading port with few natural resources and significant development challenges.

Today, it consistently ranks among the world’s most competitive economies and enjoys one of the highest standards of living globally. Through sustained investments in education, institutional excellence, innovation, and technology, it transformed itself into a global hub for finance, advanced manufacturing, logistics, and research.

Singapore proved that a nation’s greatest resource is not what lies beneath its soil but what exists within the minds of its people.

China:

China offers perhaps the largest example of a knowledgedriven economic transformation in modern history. Over several decades, China invested heavily in scientific research, engineering education, manufacturing capability, and industrial development. Today, it possesses the world’s largest manufacturing sector and has become a global leader in advanced technologies, renewable energy, robotics, artificial intelligence, and high-value manufacturing.

China now spends trillions of yuan annually on research and development, producing more engineering graduates than any nation on earth. Its rise was not accidental. It was the result of long-term investments in knowledge capability, and national competitiveness.

The above cited countries parade different histories, different cultures and different political systems. Yet the pattern remains remarkably consistent.

The lesson here is that nations rise when they invest in knowledge and in contrast, nations stagnate when they rely exclusively on what nature has provided.

he collaboration between the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) in the fight against financial crimes has earned Nigeria the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crimes (UNODC) and World Bank’s Egmont Group Stolen Asset Recovery (StAR) Initiative Award, at the 32nd Egmont Group Plenary of Heads of Financial Intelligence Units (FIUs) held in Baku, Azerbaijan, between July 5 and 10, 2026.

The StAR Award is officially one of the highest operational honours within the global financial intelligence community.

It celebrates exceptional instances where exchange and professional analysis of financial intelligence advances investigations, disrupts illicit financial networks, and secures success in the pursuit of justice.

The Group observed that, “the award is a distinction strictly reserved for outstanding cases that exemplify innovation, international cooperation, operational effectiveness, and measurable impact,” in the fight against

financial crimes.

It further observed that the winning EFCC-NFIU framework serves as a global model on how secure, timely intelligence sharing between domestic institutions and international partners can result in asset recovery, adding that the winning case perfectly showcased how the NFIU’s intelligence-driven data successfully fed into and strengthened EFCC’s law enforcement investigations, resulting in a monumental recovery of stolen assets.

The Egmont Group’s plenary serves as its principal decision making forum that provides an opportunity for heads of Financial Intelligence Units, FIUs to engage in strategic dialogue, exchange expertise, and guide the Group’s priorities.

The 2026 Plenary included a thematic discussion, focused on strengthening public private partnerships, reflecting the evolving nature of financial crime and the need for enhanced collaboration between FIUs and relevant stakeholders.

igerian sprinter, Kanyinsola Ajayi last Saturday stunned the athletics world, winning the men’s 100m at the prestigious Prefontaine Classic at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon. The 21-year-old collegiate breakout star clocked a blistering 9.84 seconds to defeat reigning world champion Oblique Seville, who took second place in 9.89 seconds.

Former world champion, Christian Coleman finished third in 9.95 seconds, just ahead of Kenneth Bednarek in 9.96 seconds.

The result came on Ajayi’s Diamond League debut, and his winning time of 9.84 seconds is second only to Seville’s season-best 9.82 seconds between the pair this year. Ajayi’s winning time also equalled the Nigerian record of 9.84 seconds that he first set in May at the NCAA East Regional Championships, when he eclipsed Olusoji Fasuba’s long-standing national record of 9.85 seconds that had stood since the Doha Grand Prix in 2006.

Despite Seville making the better start from the blocks, Ajayi powered past the Jamaican during the acceleration phase, taking the lead outright at the 30-metre mark and never looking back.

Speaking after his landmark win on the global stage, Ajayi said: “I feel good, I’ve been consistent. That was part of my goal—to stay on top of it all, stay consistent, come out here and do what I have to do and just execute my race.”

The 21-year-old, who hails from Ikorodu and attends Auburn University in the United States, has had a remarkable season.

He won the 2026 NCAA Indoor Championships over 60 metres and the 100 metres at the 2026 NCAA Outdoor Championships, becoming the second Nigerian to win the NCAA 100m title after Divine Oduduru in 2018. The Prefontaine Classic victory is simply the latest statement in what is shaping up to be a breakthrough year for Nigerian sprinting.

Ajayi says equalling his own national record has only strengthened his belief that faster times are ahead for him.

“Equalling the national record again means a lot. That means I can do better and I feel great about that,” Ajayi told FloTrack.

“I’m just going to continue the momentum, no going back and whatever is next is next.”

The victory capped another remarkable milestone for the Nigerian, who only weeks earlier won his first NCAA Outdoor 100m title after an outstanding collegiate season.

Ajayi insisted the transition from collegiate athletics to the professional circuit has not been intimidating, crediting the demanding NCAA environment for preparing him to compete against the world’s best.

“It feels like the same thing to me. Competing in the NCAA and the pressure in the NCAA. If I could overcome the pressure in the NCAA, that means I can overcome any pressure at pro level, so it’s still the same thing to me, nothing different,” he said after the race.

The Nigerian also outlined the formula behind his impressive run of form.

“Consistency, practice and just stay healthy and just trust myself and trust my coach,” he said.

The victory confirmed Ajayi’s emergence as one of the world’s elite sprinters and strengthened Nigeria’s hopes ahead of the 2026 Commonwealth Games and the 2027 World Athletics Championships.

“Consistency is my biggest goal. I know what I’m capable of, and I want to keep performing at this level every time I step onto the track,” Ajayi said.

Despite his record-equalling performance, Ajayi insists he is far from satisfied, revealing that his priority is to remain healthy, continue trusting his coach and keep improving every aspect of his sprinting.

With the Commonwealth Games fast approaching and the World Athletics Championships on the horizon, the Nigerian sprint star believes consistency will be the key to transforming his breakthrough season into sustained global success.

Already regarded as one of Africa’s brightest athletics prospects, Ajayi’s latest performance has further established him as a genuine medal contender on the international stage and one of the athletes expected to spearhead Nigeria’s sprint resurgence in the years ahead.

Greed, Desperation and Costly Lessons from Ponzi Scheme Collapse

y the time the truth dawned on them earlier this week, the websites had disappeared, the withdrawals had stopped, and the dreams of getting attractive returns on their funds had evaporated.

Social media has been flooded with heartbreaking stories of parents counting their losses, traders whose business capital disappeared overnight, and workers who watched their hard-earned savings vanish with the click of a button.

That was because the collapse of two Ponzi schemes: the National Reading Culture (NRC) and TAG investment platforms - has left thousands asking the same painful question: ‘How did we fall for it again?

For the NRC, reports indicate that it was founded in 2023 and claimed to have its headquarters in the United States. It required its clients to pay registration and VIP upgrade fees ranging from N18,900 to N174,000 and thereafter they were expected to complete daily “reading” tasks to qualify for earnings and referral bonuses. The illegal platform marketed itself as a literacy initiative and relied largely on deposits from members and a referral structure that promised to double their money within a few days, which is the old strategy that other Ponzi schemes adopt.

Equally, promoters of TAG, which was based in Rivers State, had projected it as an online investment scheme with lucrative returns on investment.

With this, what began as a desperate search for financial relief for many of the victims has ended in tears, regret and crushing debt.

But beyond the personal tragedies, the latest Ponzi debacle has exposed deeper issues in our society. The underlying recurring pattern is a reflection of the level of poverty, the lack of financial

literacy and even more important, the level of greed. These have been identified as major reasons for the unending number of persons that fall for the activities of illegal investment companies, with losses recorded over the years in the country estimated at over N2 trillion.

This undying and unrestrained appetite for get-rich-quick syndrome among some Nigerians have seen them swindled by promoters of these illegal businesses.

Ponzi schemes have existed for more than a century, and the formula remains the same: Scammers lure investors with promises of big gains. Instead of generating real profits, they use money from new investors to pay earlier ones — while pocketing much of the cash themselves.

They offer unrealistic returns on investments to gullible persons. For instance, at the Ojuelegba area of Lagos, some persons were seen recently distributing a handbill advertising an investment scheme that offers 30 per cent returns in 30 days. Sadly, such glaring red flags are often ignored by people lured by the promise of quick

profits.

In the past, Nigeria witnessed the spectacular collapse of prominent Ponzi schemes such as MMM and Zarfund, which left millions of investors counting their losses after operators disappeared with billions of naira. Other fraudulent investment schemes that fleeced unsuspecting Nigerians over the years included Nospecto, Galaxy Transport, Famzhi Interbiz Limited, MBA Trading & Capital Investment Limited, Imagine Global Solutions, Chinmark Investment, Chymall, and several others.

Despite these painful experiences, new Ponzi schemes continue to emerge, exploiting the same combination of economic hardship, financial illiteracy, greed and the promise of quick wealth.

One of the enduring lessons from the repeated collapse of Ponzi schemes is that financial prudence remains the first line of defence against investment fraud. Many victims fail to take time to verify the legitimacy of the companies behind the mouth-watering offers being dangled before them or to understand how genuine investments work.

This underscores the urgent need for greater financial literacy and a more realistic appreciation that every legitimate investment carries risks and that exceptionally high, guaranteed returns are usually too good to be true.

Investors must therefore exercise caution, conduct proper due diligence and confirm that any investment platform is duly registered with the appropriate regulatory authorities before committing their hard-earned money.

The Central Bank of Nigeria, the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation, and regulators have continued to use every opportunity to warn Nigerians against the activities of these corporate fraudsters.

Coordinating Committee (FSRCC) has consistently advised and persuaded Nigerians to stop dealing with such firms who lure and defraud unsuspecting members of the public by offering extra-ordinary returns on investments as bait and had called on members of the public to visit the websites of the CBN, SEC and other relevant member agencies of the FSRCC to verify the registration and license status of such companies and schemes before investing in them.

Nevertheless, it is important for the regulators to strengthen their collaboration with the security agencies to ensure that the Investments and Securities Act (ISA) 2025, which expressly prohibits Ponzi Schemes and other unlawful investment schemes and prescribes stringent jail terms and other sanctions for the promoters of such schemes is fully enforced.

The ISA 2025, which was last year, assented to by President Bola Tinubu, empowers law enforcement agencies and regulators to prosecute offenders, dismantle fraudulent operations early, and in some cases, recover and return assets to victims. This is because illegal investment operations are financial crimes that destroy livelihoods, erode public confidence in legitimate investment opportunities and undermine the integrity of the nation's financial system.

Clearly, real wealth takes time to build. And it can only happen through long term consistent investments in products that contribute to economic growth and through licensed operators.

Members of the public must shun greed. They must steer clear of offers that seem too good to be true and always engage only licenced, registered and trusted financial companies and finally, make sure all their investment decisions are done with sound judgement.
