Super Eagles Resurrect, Beat Iceland 2-0 President excited, urges team to sustain current winning drive Duro Ikhazuagbe and Kunle Adewale in Volgograd Two second half goals yesterday by Ahmed Musa at the ongoing World Cup at the Volgograd Arena, Russia, earned Super Eagles maximum three points
against Iceland to revive Nigeria’s ambition of qualifying for the last round of 16 teams. In a swift reaction, President Muhammadu Buhari sent a congratulatory message to the team, urging the players to sustain the winning momentum.
After a first half that was expectedly dominated by Eagles, Musa fired Nigeria into the lead in the 49th minute when he controlled beautifully a Victor Moses lob from the wing, before slamming home the lead. Deep into the second half,
Musa again dribbled his way into then Iceland box to score Nigeria’s second assurance goal. The Iceland fans that were nearly 90 per cent of the 40,904 fans that attended the game became dumb with silence. They could no longer indulge
in their traditional thunderous clap made popular at Euro 2016 in France. Nigeria struggled to create clear-cut chances in the first half. After Ahmed Musa’s two goals the young Super Eagles gained a lot of confidence in their attack-
ing efforts though. This will no doubt give them a huge boost ahead of the huge final Group D clash against Argentina on Tuesday. Nigeria has it in their own hands now to advance to Continued on page 6

APCThrows 29 Elective Positions Open As ‘Unity List’Flops Kashim Ibrahim Imam gains momentum in the race for National Secretary Onyebuchi Ezigbo and Senator Iroegbuin Abuja Barring any last minute change, 29 of the elective offices up for grab at today’s first elective National Convention of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), will be thrown open to aspirants. THISDAY gathered that
conflict of interests among key stakeholders of the party led to the death of the consensus plan aimed at ensuring an easy and rancour-free election. After series of consultations failed to secure endorsement for a consensus list of aspirants yesterday, the party asked each zone to go and draw up its own unity list which will be
harmonised at the convention venue. However, the immediate past governor of Edo State, Adams Oshiomhole, was confirmed for the chairmanship position, following the withdrawal of his opponents - Prof. Oserheimen Osunbor, Clement Ebri and Chief Ibrahim Emokpaire. As a result of the failed
“unity list”, about 160 aspirants will slug it out for 29 seats in the National Working Committee while aspirants for the 21 NWC positions will be returned unopposed. Three aspirants will contest for the position of National Secretary. They are the incumbent, Mai Mala Buni, Kashim Imam, Waziri Bulama and Abdulraha-
man Terab. Out of the about 160 aspirants, 17 are from the South-east alone and they are contesting for the three NWC positions of National Vice Chairman, National Organising Secretary and National Auditor. The aspirants for the Organising Secretary’s position include the incumbent, Osita Izunaso
(South-east caucus); Emma Ibediro (Governor Okorocha’s candidate); Chidi Nwogu (from Okadigbo Rainbow Coalition) Longinus Anyanwu (from anti-Okorocha’s group). For the National Publicity Secretary’s position, the incumbent, Bolaji Abdulahi Continued on page 6
Atiku Formally Seeks PDP Presidential Ticket, Meets with Party Leadership Onyebuchi Ezigbo in Abuja Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, has officially flagged off the move to pick the presidential ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) by meeting with the national leadership of the party in Abuja. Speaking yesterday in Abuja at a meeting with the PDP National Chairman, Uche Secondus, and members of National Working Committee, Atiku said with the level of improvement so far recorded in the rebranding of the party, reclaiming power in 2019 is a mission accomplished. "I believe that if we sustain the feat recorded during the governorship primary in Ekiti State in other primaries that will come, this party is destined to reclaim its role and retrieve
power generally through our electoral process. If there was anything that really affected the performance of this party, it was the way and manner primaries were conducted and how candidates were selected but with the precedent you have set, we are on our way to reclaiming power in 2019. "This meeting is not intended for anything other than my desire to seek the presidential ticket of the party. I am here to put you on notice and I believe that I should do this before reaching out to other organs of the party. I want thank you and look forward to working with you," he said. Atiku also cleared the doubt about his loyalty, saying, "whether as presidential candidate or not, you can Continued on page 6
