“As an activist and campaigner for HIV /AIDS as it affects women and children, I feel greatly encouraged by the fact that according to the 2012 UNAIDS Global Report, new infection rates have fallen by 50% or more in 25 countries. This proves that we can actually see a transformative change in the tide of destruction of the pandemic.

At the same time, in sub-Saharan Africa, every day (approximately) 700 children become infected with HIV, nearly all of whom acquire the virus from their mothers during pregnancy, childbirth or breastfeeding. Transmission of HIV from a pregnant mother to her child is absolutely preventable, through appropriate medical interventions. m2m has become a key partner in the Global Plan towards Elimination of New HIV Infections among Children by 2015 and Keeping their Mothers Alive.

The organisation is currently working to help countries implement their own Mentor Mother model, to strengthen national health systems and reach the most mothers. This work with governments is crucial to ensure local ownership of mentoring programs, and long term sustainable systems. A few days ago on September 28th, a global appeal was launched by heads of state, global leaders, UNAIDS and the telecoms industry in New York’s Central Park, with millions of people watching to make the goal of zero new HIV infections among children a reality. We believe that the world will rise to the occasion in a collective call to reach these historic objectives.

Worldwide approximately 800 children are newly infected with HIV each day. 90% of these are in sub-Saharan African.

AIDS is a leading cause of maternal mortality in sub-Saharan Africa, leaving too many young children without their mothers when they need them most.

These outcomes are unnecessary and unacceptable. No baby should be born with HIV and no mother should die of AIDS.

Effective and affordable medical interventions are available that can prevent HIV transmission to infants and keep mothers alive. Without these interventions, up to 40% of infants born to HIV-positive mothers will contract the virus.

With medication, that number can be reduced to 2%. mothers2mothers (m2m) is eliminating transmission of HIV from mothers to babies and improving the health of women, their partners and families with its proven Mentor Mother model. We are a leader in the global effort to eliminate new HIV infections among children and protect the health of mothers. m2m employs and empowers mothers living with HIV who work as Mentor Mothers in health centres and communities to provide essential health education and psychosocial support to prevent the transmission of HIV from mother-tochild, and keep mothers and their families healthy.

Since its inception, m2m has reached more than one million mothers in nine countries in sub-Saharan Africa.

HOST: MURIEL GRAY Muriel Gray is a successful author, broadcaster and businesswoman. Her career has included performing in a punk band; a stint as Assistant Head of Design at the National Museum of Antiquities in Edinburgh; presenting a host of radio and television programmes - including iconic Channel 4 music show The Tube; becoming the first female Rector of the University of Edinburgh and the first ever woman Chair of Glasgow School of Art. “I am delighted to be hosting this evening’s important event in support of mothers2mothers. mothers2mothers’ innovative approach is leading the way for other organisations in the field of HIV/ AIDS to follow. I am particularly emboldened by the pivotal role that HIV positive women hold at the heart of all mothers2mothers does. HOST: RICHARD E. GRANT Richard E Grant is an internationally acclaimed actor, screenwriter, director and author. He was born and brought up in Swaziland, a nation which has the unfortunate distinction of having the highest rate of HIV infection in the world. In 1987, Richard starred in the cult movie hit Withnail and I - and the rest is history.

“I first heard about mothers2mothers, and the remarkable work the charity is doing, through my friendship with the charity’s founder, Dr Mitch Besser, and his wife Annie Lennox. They are both so passionate about finding practical solutions to tackle HIV and the stigma surrounding it; and it’s a passion that I share.

The ground-breaking Mentor Mother programme devised by mothers2mothers is a simple, but very effective way preventing mother to child transmission of HIV. I’m delighted to be a part of this very special evening and to support mothers2mothers as they strive to expand this vital work and reach more mothers.”

AUCTIONEER: CHARLIE THOMAS As a Director of Bonhams Furniture Department, Charlie Thomas has handled many of the single owner sales at Bonhams including the contents of The Savoy, Chateau Montfort and The Franklin Hotel.

He also played a key role with the cataloguing and selling of The Owston Collection in Australia and initiated Bonhams’ Period Design sales.

Mentor Mothers’ location at the facility allows them to fully support clients, from their initial HIV-test to their babies’ second birthday, as they navigate the recommended course of PMTCT treatment.
