Situated in London’s historic East End, Wilton’s Music Hall theatre looks much as it did during its 19th-century heyday.

Following many years of careful conservation work, the world’s oldest remaining music hall was reopened to much applause in 2015. It now presents a large variety of plays, opera, puppetry, classical music, cabaret, dance and magic shows.

A programme of talks and tours also helps tell the story of Wilton’s incredible encore as one of the city’s theatrical hidden gems.

KING ARTHUR Charlie Hunnam (from the TV series Sons of Anarchy) as a buff, unshaven Arthur who grows up scrapping in the back passages of olde Londonium. Once Arthur has grabbed hold of the magical sword Excalibur – a key part of the myth first popularised by The Sword in the Stone, T.H. White’s 1938 novel of Arthur’s boyhood – our hero realises his true kingly destiny lies in overthrowing wicked tyrant Vortigern (played by Ritchie’s old Dr Watson, Jude Law).

If this all sounds like King Arthur: Legend of the Sword has taken some diabolical liberties with Arthurian myth, well, it’s worth remembering that the classic story of Arthur and Guinevere and Sir Lancelot and Merlin and the Knights of the Round Table is itself stitched together from many different and often contradictory literary sources, dating back as far as AD 594. And while there’s scant historical evidence that a real fifth-century warrior king named Arthur did lead the fight against the Anglo-Saxon invaders, it’s still great fun to visit some of the many different sites that have become entwined with the legend over the years.

It was Geoffrey of Monmouth, in his Historia Regum Britanniae (‘History of the Kings of Britain’) circa 1136 ,who first identified Tintagel in Cornwall as the place where Arthur was conceived.

Tintagel Castle, originally constructed in 1233 for Richard, Earl of Cornwall, had by the 15th-Century ‘officially’ become the place of both Arthur’s conception and his birth.

Today, the ruins of Tintagel Castle are maintained by English Heritage, who offer visitors a complete Arthurian experience, including an exhibition on Tintagel’s varied past, and an outdoor interpretation of the ruins that takes in a walk along the South West coast.

Cornwall has many other links to Arthurian legend.

At Slaughterbridge, an inscribed stone is said to mark the spot where King Arthur died fighting his enemy Mordred during the Battle of Camlann.

There is now an Arthurian Centre at Slaughterbridge, a nature trail, gift shop and play castle. And nearby is the ancient town of Camelford, one of a number of ‘real Camelot’ candidates.

Another contender for ‘the real Camelot’ prize is the Bronze and Iron Age hillfort Cadbury Castle (or ‘Camalet’) in Somerset. It was the poet and antiquarian John Leland who was the first to suggest the link between Cadbury and Camelot, back in the 16th century, but local people have long embraced it too, with spots named ‘Arthur’s Well’, ‘Arthur’s Palace’ and ‘Arthur’s Lane’.

Inevitably, the local pub is called The Camelot.

Staying in Somerset, the area surrounding the village of Queen Camel is also frequently cited as a possible location for the Battle of Camlann. As always with Arthurian myth, storytellers are divided as to whether Arthur actually died on the battlefield, or was fatally wounded and removed from the conflict.

Avalon in fact located around Glastonbury Tor, (with the Holy Grail handily buried underneath), but also that Arthur and Queen Guinivere were laid to rest together in the cemetery at Glastonbury Abbey. Today, ‘Arthur’s tomb’ is helpfully marked out by a sign in the abbey grounds.

Windsor Great Park NEAREST GWR STATION IS WINDSOR CENTRAL King Arthur: Legend of the Sword is the first installment in a planned series of six movies covering the whole of the Arthurian saga.

It was filmed at a number of different British locations, including Snowdonia in Wales and the Scottish Highlands.

Filming actually kicked off in February 2015, at Windsor Great Park. This massive Royal Park dates back as far as the 13th century and encompasses acres of unspoilt woodland.

The park also offers visitors historical monuments, abundant wildlife, an award winning visitor centre, cafés and restaurants, as well as the chance to enjoy a spot of mountain biking, horse riding or fishing in unspoilt surroundings.

With such a supremely photogenic location, it’s no surprise that King Arthur: Legend of Sword is far from being the first film to make use of the park.

Enjoy a slice of classic comfort food Simonetti, serves some great seafood, including their own fish pie. Robert makes it using an old family recipe.

One thing I really love at this time of year is a good fish pie.

At Rockfish we have just launched a fish pie cooked in shortcrust pastry with a puff pastry lid. It’s a delicious twist on the traditional mashtopped pie.

We also have a version using wonderful Torbay scallops and locally smoked bacon, all cooked in a white sauce with plenty of parsley inside a pastry pie case – delicious, especially with the fried pickles on the side.

Simply fish I’m far from alone in wanting to eat fish pie all the time.

You will need (SERVES 4) *1 leek, chopped *Splash of white wine *1 onion, half of it sliced *4-5 black peppercorns *1 carrot, chopped *2 sticks of celery, chopped *2 fennel bulbs, sliced finely, keeping the root and the top trimmings *1 tsp fennel seeds *Olive oil *25g butter *Some flour *Black pepper *A splash of anchovy sauce (optional) *200g salmon fillet, cut into cubes *200g coley fillet, cut into cubes *150g small peeled frozen prawns *Enough mashed potato to cover your dish with about 25cm of topping *Handful of chopped parsley

Butter the bottom of your pie dish and put the fish in.

Pour over the sauce, leaving enough room for the potato and fennel topping.

Mix the fennel and its juices with the mashed potato, spread on top of the pie and brush with a little butter.

Season with black pepper – you can sprinkle a little Parmesan over it too if you like. Bake for 15-20 minutes in a hot oven. Turn down the heat and cook for a further 20-30 minutes.

Richmond Park is a beautiful National Nature Reserve, but you may know it better as the backdrop to a world famous YouTube clip. In it, a frantic pet owner chases after his dog Fenton, as the Labrador attempts to herd some of the park’s 630 red and fallow deer. These stunning animals have been roaming freely on the grounds since 1539 and they play a major role in the park’s history.

Visitors come from far and wide to see the wild deer in their natural habitat, as well as to explore the many winding paths, trails and hilly routes that can be found in this picturesque setting.

LEE VALLEY

Whether you fancy a gentle stroll or a surefooted hike, Lee Valley offers 26 miles of trails for visitors to experience. There’s also a guided monthly walk on the first Sunday of every month which is led by one of the park’s Rangers. No booking is required and it is completely free to join in with.

An award-winning open space, Lee Valley was created as a ‘green lung’ for London, Essex and Hertfordshire and aims to connect these communities with activities in a peaceful environment.

If the internal sliding door will not open, lift the emergency release cover where marked (situated in the top corner of the door)

How did you get involved in comedy?

Originally I wanted to become an architect, but as a teenager I used to watch the likes of Jack Dee and Eddie Izzard at comedy clubs. I suppose I got involved in comedy through watching so much of it. While studying divinity at Edinburgh University, I joined the comedy troupe, The Introverts, and gave stand up a go myself. The comedy circuit in Scotland at the time included the likes of Frankie Boyle and Susan Morrison. They were doing their own things, which I think is crucial when trying to stand out – you’ve got to find your own niche.

Having played Archie in Balamory, Nigel in Rev, and John Duggan in The Thick of It, which roles have really stuck with you?

These characters changed my life really.

I was just a 22-year-old student doing stand up when I started playing Archie in Balamory.

Turning up on set I didn’t expect to do much, but I think we covered about 25 scripts and filmed eight episodes a week. Before The Thick of It, I hadn’t done anything in ages.

The role came completely out of the blue and suddenly I was part of a really talented team of people.

My role in Rev sort of stemmed from that.

You took over from Sandy Toksvig as chair on BBC Radio 4’s The News Quiz in 2015.

Was it an intimidating position to take on?

It was a bit. Given that the show is now in its 89th series, it has a lot of history behind it.

When I took over from Sandy, my gut feeling was that I just had to get on with it. I’d hosted quite a few radio programmes and had previously been on The News Quiz about 20 times as a panellist, so it wasn’t totally unknown territory.

What can audiences expect from your new stand up show Songs of Freedom?

It’s about a man slightly adrift from the world.

It’s about not taking the usual root to happiness and being baffled by things that people generally take as straightforward. It deals with the problems that arise with being too polite and a few professional embarrassments, that sort of stuff.

Describe your ideal day out on the GWR Well first of all I’d make sure that everyone in the silent coach obeyed the rules. Then I’d head to Taunton to watch the cricket before visiting the Castle Hotel for one of their tasting menus.

I’d then go and see a show at the Taunton Brewhouse Theatre & Arts Centre. That would be my dream day.

Miles will take his Songs of Freedom tour to venues across the network, including Brighton on 3 February, Bristol on 14 February and London on 25 February. Visit milesjupp.co.uk for more dates.

Miles has played a number of small parts in films such as The Legend of Tarzan, The Monuments Men, Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

Miles recorded the role of Blackberry for the new BBC and Netflix television adaptation of Richard Adams’ 1972 novel Watership Down, coming this year.
