All-terrain Adapto launches

Following their success gaining investment on BBC’s Dragon’s Den earlier this year, the team behind Adapt Ability’s Omeo are launching a second mobility device the Adapto.

The innovative tech includes a height-adjustable seat, an intuitive braking system and the ability to cover up to 35 miles on a single charge, plus it offers zero degree turn capability in tight spaces.

Festive canes

Walking stick specialist Classic Canes has launched a new collection of patterned, heightadjustable canes that will make for perfect gifts this Christmas.

There are seven exclusive new designs to suit a range of cane users. These include Lavender, Oak Leaves and Snakeshead Fritillaries, which are designed to co-ordinate with different outfits and have a classic, British appeal. By contrast, Modernist Cosmos, Magic Circles, Surrealist Symbols and Folk Flowers are exuberant, colourful patterns that make terrific style statements.

Managing Director and Designer Charlotte Gillan commented: “The walking stick market has changed greatly in recent years with a new generation of walking stick users demanding glamorous and eye-catching canes. The vibe is: if you have to use a cane, why not have fun doing so? Our canes are also very popular as presents because they are both useful and attractive.”

Gravel, grass, forest, beach or slopes, the Adapto’s self-levelling tech and pneumatic tyres ensure comfort whatever the terrain, while its ‘air ride’ cushion means that users can stay out for longer without feeling jaded or tired.

Additionally, the Adapto can be personalised with various backrests and pressure-relieving cushions.

THE RETAILERS’ CHOICE Daily living aids

Wondering which daily living aids are grabbing mobility companies’ attention?

This month we asked retailers in the industry to highlight one product that is standing out for them…

Uccello Kettle from Uccello Designs

“Quite often daily living aids can look slightly dated and don’t fit in with the modern home. One particular product we stock at Thistle Help that does look stylish and modern is the Uccello Kettle.

“The revolutionary shape of the Uccello Kettle was thoughtfully designed to enable hot water to be poured from your kettle to your cup making it effortless and safe to use.

“The lightweight design, along with the rotating cradle of the Uccello Kettle, means you only have to “tilt-to-pour”, eliminating any lifting or trying to

balance and aim when pouring hot water!

“The kettle has an auto shut-off with overheating protection, a water level indicator and a large non-slip base giving you peace of mind when using it. It holds 1.5 litres and has a power-on light. The kettle is detachable from the base for optional handheld pouring and refilling through the large hinged lid. It has a removable, stainless steel antiscale filter too for ease of cleaning.

“The Uccello comes in different colours to suit your colour scheme –black & white, all black, red & white

and all white. It also comes with a twoyear warranty.

“It is an award-winning product and we love selling this product in our showrooms.”

Buckingham Compact Easywipe from Buckingham Healthcare

“The compact personal hygiene aid reaches and cleans where you can’t. It ensures personal hygiene for those who find reaching difficult.

“It has been designed to assist people with limited mobility to help with their personal cleaning after being to the toilet.

“The Buckingham Compact Easywipe is ideal for travelling. This small personal toilet aid folds down to just 16cm, allowing it to fit in your pocket or bag and it folds out to 38cm (15”). It comes with a carry pouch so it can be discreet.

“You can use both toilet tissue and wet wipes. The research-led ergonomic shape helps those with limited manual dexterity with rounded smooth design easy to keep clean.

“With a simple uncomplicated mechanism that grips the tissue firmly and the push button end that releases it clearly without the need to touch the paper.

“It is a well designed and thought about aid which can help bring people some independence. It’s no surprise that this product was designed by a senior occupational therapist.”

StairSteady from StairSteady

“My choice of product this month is the StairSteady. It can be thought of as a walking frame for the stairs and can be a transitional device before the user commits to a stairlift. That being said, it can often remove the need for a stairlift altogether as it promotes good exercise whilst going about your daily activities and allows the user to climb and descend the stairs safely.

“The device is fitted in a similar way to a standard straight handrail, but it has a sliding arm that creates a hand hold and a barrier across the stairs in a natural position to give assistance.

“As a non-powered device it obviously has no running costs or maintenance liabilities.

Space I Pixel Indoor Rollator from Rehasense

“We love how easy the ultra lightweight Space I Pixel Indoor Rollator is to manoeuvre and fold down.

“The removable textile basket on it means that the user has a place for small items such as medicines and remote controls as well as a place for larger items on the dishwasher-safe tray, which is also detachable.

“It can be used as a small table when the user is sat down and the large

brake lever also makes it really user friendly.”

“It is one of those items that can prevent a major accident on the stairs and all of the trauma associated with a fall.

“The installation is quick and it is not obtrusive so leaves all of the usual stair width for others to use.”

Automatic Can Opener from Drive DeVilbiss Healthcare

“For individuals with limited hand mobility, opening cans has often been a challenging task, but not anymore! The Automatic Can Opener is designed to make can opening a breeze for everyone.

“At the touch of a button, the Automatic Can Opener springs into action, automatically moving around the can to effortlessly remove the lid. This ingenious device is perfect for users with limited hand mobility, as it eliminates the need for manual turning and twisting.

“The device is engineered to safely remove the lid without any contact with sharp edges, making it ideal for users of all ages. With its one-handed operation, it’s incredibly user-friendly, ensuring that opening cans is no longer a struggle. It comes with a magnetic base, allowing for mess-free lid removal.

Designed with style in mind, the Automatic Can Opener features a sleek and vibrant bright red design, adding a touch of sophistication to any kitchen. It’s not only functional but also a stylish addition to your kitchen counter.”

DualHanded Mug from Single Handed

“Here at Ability Superstore we like products that are a bit different and which you don’t often see anywhere else so the beautiful Dual Handled Mug certainly fits the bill! It is made by Single Handed, a business owned by Southampton entrepreneur Robert Simpson, who appeared on BBC’s Dragons’ Den in 2021. The ceramic Denby-style mug wouldn’t look out of place in a bistro or coffee shop.

“With one large handle on each side, the mug is easy to pass, hold and drink securely, with less risk of spills, burns or drops.

“The kiln finish of every mug means that each one has a unique look, and of course the mug provides a safer way to handle hot drinks and support those with limited hand mobility due to conditions such as Alzheimer’s, dementia and Parkinson’s. It’s also freezer, oven and microwave safe.”

Trade talk

CAN YOU TELL US A BIT MORE ABOUT THE LATEST PRODUCTS TO COME OUT FROM KARMA MOBILITY?

“We have launched several new powerchairs lately. These include the Morgan M and the Leon F and R. They are all available with Karma’s Versus prescription seating.

“Both the Morgan M and Leon R come with our sling seat and are available on the Motability Scheme.

“The Morgan M offers excellent suspension which offers great performance outdoors.

“The Leon R is an 8mph rear wheel drive powerchair with all-round suspension and large battery capacity. Meanwhile, the Leon F is the front wheel drive version and offers all-round suspension.”

WHICH PRODUCTS SAW THE MOST POSITIVE RESPONSE AT TRADE EVENTS THIS YEAR?

“The Morgan M was well received at Naidex earlier this year, and it certainly saw a lot of use on the test track. In general, I think all the chairs got a good response though.

“We are new to the powerchair market, and a lot of retailers are surprised by the product range we have now.”

WITH POWERED WHEELCHAIRS BECOMING INCREASINGLY MORE ADVANCED, WHAT SMART FEATURES DO YOU THINK APPEAL MOST TO END USERS?

“One that springs to mind is a recent request for a remote stop for a paediatric powerchair. We have a growing range of solutions for end user requirements.

“There are also number of exciting features being designed into control systems and where they do not exist Karma are designing their own as required.”

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE USE OF LITHIUM BATTERIES IN POWERED WHEELCHAIRS/ SCOOTERS?

“I think lithium is a great weight-saving solution for lighter products, if it can be used safely, but it is relatively expensive to replace.”

IS KARMA MOBILITY LOOKING TO EXPAND ITS PARTNER NETWORK?

“We are always looking to expand in areas. We do not currently have established retailer relationships. Retailers interested in Karma products can call 01527 520 468 or email info@karmamobility.co.uk.”

HOW DOES KARMA MOBILITY SUPPORTS ITS PARTNERS?

“We hold a lot of stock of both finished products and spare parts. This allows us to fulfil orders from retailers promptly. In addition, a large proportion of the marketing budget is spent on online advertising and social media promotion, directing potential customers to their local Karma retailer.”

DOES KARMA MOBILITY HAVE ANY NEW MEMBERS OF STAFF?

“Mike Clipsom joined us as Sales Engineer in April last year to support the power wheelchair sales and enhance our technical support. Contact Mike on 07483 941505 for any product enquires. ”

CAN YOU PROVIDE A GLIMPSE OF WHAT’S COMING UP WITH KARMA MOBILITY THIS YEAR AND BEYOND?

“A new tilt-in-space paediatric chair will be launched later this year called the Flexx Adapt. In 2024 we will have a new version of an old product and the next generation of an existing product line, THIIS will be the first to know when any new products become available! We will also be at Naidex in March 2024.”

We Do Mobility: ‘Can-do’ customer service done well

Sam Cameron and Metin Enver opened their new showroom after noticing that communities in South Buckinghamshire did not have a local mobility specialist to serve them…

After establishing their first mobility showroom in March 2020 in Uxbridge, Sam Cameron and Metin Enver of We Do Mobility recently opened their second mobility showroom in the Buckinghamshire market town of Beaconsfield after spotting a gap in the market. It’s not bad going for the co-founders who, while being relatively new to mobility retail, are ideally experienced for their roles.

Sam owned and operated a company providing care at home for elderly and disabled people in the community, while Metin has over 30 years’ experience as a motor technician.

Their combined knowledge and experience give them a unique insight into the needs of people with mobility impairments and how to meet them, but the path to opening their first mobility showroom in Uxbridge came about by chance.

20 | Retailer Spotlight | thiis.co.uk
We Do Mobility is a family-run business The showroom offers a range of wheelchairs and mobility scooters from a variety of brands

As Sam explains: “Just prior to the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2019, I was running a successful home care company and Metin was working as a vehicle technician for main car dealers.

“The care company had expanded from one client in 2016 to over 30 in 2019 and had quickly outgrown its home office, so we started to look for a new office space.

“We found a lovely little shop in Cowley, near Uxbridge, which was reasonably priced and well located. In the meantime, Metin had been furloughed from his job and had

begun servicing and repairing mobility scooters and other equipment for the care company’s clients and found that he enjoyed working on scooters more than cars!

“So with the retail space in the new shop we decided to sell recycled and refurbished mobility scooters and other mobility equipment to local people.

“Metin split his time between working as a vehicle technician and working at the new shop, but we found quite quickly that the shop was a great success with local people, so he gave up his job as a vehicle technician

after six months and worked at the shop doing servicing, repairs and refurbishment work full time.”

The Uxbridge showroom quickly established itself as an honest, reliable, and helpful shop, with five-star reviews on Google.

SECOND SHOWROOM

Sam and Metin were spurred into opening a second showroom after noticing that Beaconsfield and its surrounding area in South Buckinghamshire did not have a local mobility specialist to serve them.

22 | Retailer Spotlight | thiis.co.uk
Stairlifts and a range of riser recliners are offered at We Do Mobility Shop dog Oogie loves to hop on a mobility scooter during a test drive
“The showroom itself seems built to be a mobility shop, with an access ramp, a wide door and a large covered area to the front which allows for test drives in all weather.”

Sam said: “When we started having customers arrive at the Uxbridge shop from those areas. We decided that we would like to open a showroom in that area, but to be honest, we didn’t expect to find a suitable retail space so quickly! As soon as we saw it advertised online, we knew that it would be perfect and couldn’t let it get away, so we decided to bring our plan a year forward and go for it!”

Metin and Sam managed to complete all of the refurbishment in three weeks. She said: “We had to erect new walls, decorate, lay carpet and fit the shop out. It was hard work and an exhausting few weeks, as we were still running the Uxbridge shop, but we are hands-on people and knew that we wouldn’t trust anyone else to get things the way we like them!

“There’s still a little bit of work left to do, but we are working our way through it as we go!”

The new showroom is located on a busy high street with plenty of parking in the Sainsbury’s supermarket next door. Sam and Metin couldn’t be more pleased with it. She adds: “The showroom seems built to be a mobility shop, with an access ramp, a wide door and a large covered area to the front which allows for test drives in all weather. We also have great transport links to the M40 and the M25.”

EXPERIENCE MATTERS

Sam is able to assist with anything requiring prescription or more specialist mobility issues. As well as this, her role

is focused around advising, sales, buying, marketing and media.

Metin, as the on-site engineer, focuses on servicing, repairs and technical advice from his large workshop in the Beaconsfield showroom.

Although Sam adds: “We both have a good working knowledge of each other’s roles so regularly step into each other’s shoes!”

A family-run business, the other members of Sam and Metin’s team are their daughter, Erin, who has just turned 18 and helps out at the showroom on her days off from college, and their son, Layne, 15, who helped out during the refurbishment of the new showroom in his school holidays.

There’s also the shop dog, Oogie, who, Sam says, loves to greet

customers enthusiastically and has been known to hop on a mobility scooter during a test drive!

Sam adds: “Our Uxbridge customers love us for our honesty and we’re hoping the Beaconsfield ones will as well! It’s not just about a sale for us. We take the time to get to know the customer, finding out what their priorities are and advising accordingly.

“We pride ourselves on a pressurefree environment and will always advise customers to take time to think about it if they are not sure. We may have the same person into the showroom three or four times to test drive different equipment. We are always happy to oblige and have a cup of tea and a chat!”

wheelchairs, and riser recliner chairs, and will also, of course, offer servicing and repairs.

Customers can access private occupational therapists through We Do Mobility or its team, who are happy to work closely with the client’s existing medical team to ensure that all of their requirements are met.

The shop’s product range currently holds mobility scooters and powered wheelchairs from suppliers such as Motion Healthcare, Pride, Drive DeVilbiss Healthcare, and Kymco; wheelchairs, walking aids, and powered wheelchair aids from Rehasense; stairlifts by Acorn Stairlifts, and mobility furniture and aids from a range of suppliers.

Sam says that its product range is expanding weekly, and the team is always looking for innovative new technology to assist clients.

Sam states: “At the moment, the good people of Beaconsfield seem to like a large 8mph scooter, from the Drive Cobra and the Scooterpac Ignite to the new Pride Baja, a truly portable 8mph car boot scooter.”

Of the newer products, Sam says: “We have been very impressed with Motion Healthcare’s extended manufacturer’s warranty as well as their excellent battery life on all of their scooters, offering customers unrivalled range.

“The new Drive DeVilbiss Healthcare Airfold range is not only the lightest autofolding equipment on the market but also some of the sleekest looking.”

CUSTOMER SERVICE

The website is an important part of the business, comments Sam. “We have found that our website is important for customers to find us and see what we are all about, but most people want to come into the showroom to see, touch and test drive our range before buying online.

“We think that mobility retailers must embrace e-commerce as this

is the way of the future, but when it comes to mobility equipment, it is important for people to try before they buy as every scooter and powerchair feels and drives slightly differently from the next.”

There are challenges, however. There is a limit to how successful e-commerce can be, explains Sam, as people do like to try before they buy. On the other hand, she states, the cost of owning or leasing a premises is increasing, so it’s not always easy to make the numbers stack up.

As for the next 12 months, Sam explains that the plan is to continue to build on the core customer base in Beaconsfield and the surrounding areas whilst maintaining their shop in Uxbridge as well.

“We would like to take on some extra staff so that we can have the odd day off, but we love our jobs so we’re in no

rush!” Sam explains that both she and Metin are always looking to expand their range and are open to innovative new products from suppliers.

“We see ourselves continually expanding the range and improving the customer experience. There are no current plans to open another showroom yet, but we would never rule out anything!”

Trade thoughts

“Good bricks-and-mortar retailers probably aren’t any better than good online sellers when it comes to pre-sale customer service and non face-to-face sales. Online sellers can even have the edge with professional websites and dedicated telephone sales personnel. They don’t have the overheads of central locations so can afford to invest in online shop windows.

“As the saying goes in Scotland, the online retailer could be “aw fur coat an nae knickers”, meaning what is unseen is the poor service you get below the surface. Trustpilot states of one online seller that it has “sued this business over its use of fake reviews”.

“A good bricks-and-mortar retailer can surpass the customer service levels of online providers by playing to their strengths, such as no hard sell; good product knowledge; offering respected brands; face-to-face interactions; having local knowledge and provision of great after-sales service, even if the original product hasn’t been bought

In what ways can the bricks-and-mortar retailer differentiate itself from the online seller?

from them. City Mobility has some customers that originally bought online but what they bought hasn’t worked for them or it needs servicing, repairs etc. This has established loyalty and they then come to us for their next purchase.

“We look at what we can give customers beyond the initial sale. We give our customers a free add-on to their manufacturer’s warranty which says we will come to their home freeof-charge for any warranty call outs. We also give our customers a loyalty discount off all servicing and call-out costs. Bricks-and-mortar retailers are the only businesses that can offer customers a frank assessment of their competency to use a product.”

www.city-mobility.co.uk

“Like many dealers with overheads and staff to pay for, it’s impossible to compete with online businesses, many sending products in a box.

“Thistle Help pride ourselves on the high level of customer service we provide. Online companies Undoubtedly are cheaper than the dealers with proper premises.

“We often hear from customers who have purchased online, trying to not only get them to resolve any issues but to get them to even answer the telephone, is a nightmare for them.

“At least buying from a shop like ourselves, the item purchased is delivered and built up rather than it coming in a box. Also customers know where to go to should an issue arise. Controversial as it sounds, I often question if companies who are unable to provide the full back up service should be allowed to trade in the first place.

“My late mother used to say “you only get what you pay for”. I’m a strong believer in this and paying that bit extra should get customers the level of service they desire and deserve.”

thistlehelp.co.uk

“By prioritising customer needs, understanding their objectives and consistently exceeding expectations, brick-and-mortar retailers can develop successful customer relationships despite the rise of online sellers.

“Bricks-and-mortar businesses are in a real position of strength to maximise the experience for the customers and help them navigate towards a more valueadding and successful outcome. Being there to let the customer see, touch, and try the products helps in allowing the customer to make that informed decision and the two-way interaction is generally the start of long-lasting productive relations between customer and company.

“Our distinct advantage is providing personalised service; being there at the outset to deliver, install/assemble and handover the product, then supporting them for however long the customer owns the product, giving them reassurance and confidence we’re there to assist them in time of need, ensuring they always get reliability and value from any product they purchase from us, this approach is key to many successful business models and is key in developing productive relationships for both and growing successful businesses.”

Ready to launch

Following years of research and development, Bath-based charity Designability is looking forward to launching its accessible pushchair for wheelchair users this month…

Known for designing innovative products that help disabled people live with greater independence, Designability is looking forward to launching its revolutionary accessible pushchair for wheelchair users at Harrogate’s International Nursery Fair this month.

The ground-breaking pushchair, which can be used by a disabled parent or carer, or those who are nondisabled, has been designed with mass manufacture in mind.

The design replaces the traditional rear wheels/footbrake assembly, turning any conventional pushchair into an accessible pushchair.

COMMERCIAL PARTNER SEARCH

Currently in prototype format, the team from Designability is now looking for a commercial partner to bring the pushchair to market for the first time and hope that in the future it will offer true independence to disabled parents and carers worldwide.

The Harrogate International Nursery Fair, which runs from 15-17 October, has been chosen as the venue for the pushchair’s launch. Interested parties are invited to come along and see the prototype in action, with members of the design team available to answer any questions.

Matthew Ford, Director of Design and Innovation at Designability said: “We’re so excited to finally launch our accessible pushchair for wheelchair users in Harrogate and to show everybody what it can do!

“It really is a game changer that helps address one of the main inequalities disabled parents and carers face; the ability to take their babies and very young children out independently.”

MEETING DEMAND

There are currently no products on the global market that meet an accessible pushchair demand, according to Designability, meaning that parents or carers who are wheelchair users have

no safe way to get to the shops or a park independently with their young child.

They are either left isolated at home or dependent on a non-disabled partner or carer. This can also lead to practical difficulties, with parents resorting to having their child sitting

on their lap, which is often unsafe and uncomfortable.

As well as the practical difficulties, disabled parents have spoken to Designability about the emotional impact of being reliant on others to go out with their baby or toddler, and that this means they feel a ‘lesser’ parent.

With the long-term consequences from the pandemic of increased isolation and mental health challenges, the charity believes that providing a solution that gives disabled parents independence with their baby and toddler has never been more critical.

RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT

Matt explains the inspiration behind the pushchair design: “As a national disability charity, we have been aware of the need for this product for many years. It is our most requested product, and we estimate that there are around

20,000 disabled parents in the UK alone who could benefit.

“We have been developing the pushchair over the last four years and believe it will transform the lives of thousands of disabled parents and carers, enabling them to live with greater independence.

“During the design phase, Designability engaged directly with wheelchair users discovering the key challenges they face and understanding their experiences. We used an iterative approach to designing, producing several prototypes, and testing the features of each one with disabled users and incorporating their feedback into the next design.”

PROTOTYPE TRIALS

In 2021, Matt’s team carried out in-person prototype trials with parents who are manual wheelchair users, with further parents engaging online.

During 2022-2023, using insight from earlier user testing, they were able to create their innovative final design, which went on to complete rigorous safety and integrity testing in March 2023 to ensure the design conforms

to international standards for pushchairs and strollers.

One parent, Sarah, who took part in recent user testing, explained the difference the pushchair would make to her life: “At home I can be everything for my children. I can achieve anything. When I’m out that completely changes. To leave the house, I need to find someone to help me push the pram. I can’t just pop to the park or shops – I become a sideline watcher to my child.

“The amount of days my babies

wouldn’t sleep, what I would have given to be able to walk them round the block to calm them.

“It’s like the change when you get your first car, suddenly you are free to do what you want to do, whenever you want to do it. True freedom.”

Another parent who took part in testing to assess the pushchair for its usability and desirability said: “It’s like a dream compared to what I had to do with the pram. I always had a person with me – we’ve never been able to go out. This is much easier than what I’ve had to do – I’ve fallen in love with this, it’s lovely.”

CAN YOU DESCRIBE ONE OR TWO HIGHLIGHTS FOR YOU THAT YOU HAVE BEEN MOST PROUD OF DURING YOUR TIME AT MK BATTERY?

“The time, energy and support that MK Battery has happily provided, and will continue to provide, to the sport of powerchair football.

“From sponsoring the USA Power Soccer team for many years, to suppling batteries to the England and Australia teams for the World Cup, we are always pleased to be involved.

“We are proud sponsors of the Covid-delayed World Cup 2023 in Australia and are already looking forward to supporting the teams at this historic tournament in October. Seeing the joy and independence that this sport affords to the many people involved can’t help but put a smile on your face.

MK BATTERY HAS OPENED A NEW DISTRIBUTION FACILITY IN GERMANY. CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT IT?

“We have, for many years, had a significant customer base in Germany. These customers have been ably supplied though our UK and Netherlands facilities. With the financial and logistical challenges brought about

by Brexit, we decided the time was right to invest in a 22,000+ square feet distribution facility in Karlsruhe, in Southern Germany.

“This location, along with a smaller location in Cologne, will allow us to increase service levels to our German customer base but also to supply some of the EU countries that were previously supplied from the UK.

“This location, already stocked with

our full range of batteries, chargers, and testers, is now fully operational and shipping orders throughout Europe and the Middle East.”

HOW DOES MK BATTERY DISTRIBUTE IN AREAS WHERE YOU DON’T HAVE YOUR OWN PHYSICAL DISTRIBUTION CENTRES?

“Over the years, MK Battery has established long-term distribution arrangements with key business partners, strategically located in countries where we do not have our own infrastructure.

“These quality distribution companies provide accessibility to our products throughout the world.”

CAN YOU TELL US A BIT MORE ABOUT HOW YOUR PRODUCTS ARE DISTRIBUTED IN THE UK?

“A little over 20 years ago, MK Battery International was established in

Kettering, UK. Now with 17 employees, working out of our four UK locations, we supply batteries to many diverse markets that require a high-quality battery solution.

“Each location runs its own route delivery vehicle, which predominantly services the needs of mobility dealers throughout the UK.

“This delivery from an MK-owned vehicle, on top of the next-day service offered from our HQ in Kettering, has helped us become one the largest and most reliable battery suppliers in the UK.”

ARE YOU LOOKING TO EXPAND YOUR DEALER NETWORK, AND IF SO, WHAT KIND OF DEALERS ARE YOU LOOKING FOR? AND WHAT CAN MK BATTERY OFFER DEALERS WHO COME ONBOARD?

“We always welcome new dealers looking to purchase a high-quality battery for the many power-demanding

products that the mobility industry continues to develop. Although primarily a battery specialist, MK are proud that the mobility industry is one that we devote so much time and attention to.

“The partnerships that we have developed with manufacturers and dealers over many years have allowed us to offer reliable guidance on the most suitable battery options for each application and to help dispel many myths surrounding battery technologies.”

WHAT PRODUCT IS THE BESTSELLER IN THE MOBILITY INDUSTRY FOR MK BATTERY?

“We believe that there is a correct battery for each application.

“For heavy-duty applications, such as power wheelchairs, we believe that our Genuine Gel Battery is the best solution due to its superior cycle life which far exceeds all other lead battery technologies.

“For lighter use applications, such as scooters, we believe that AGM batteries offer the perfect balance between lower cost and suitable cycle life.”

WHAT DO YOU THINK SEPARATES MK BATTERY FROM ITS COMPETITION IN THE MOBILITY INDUSTRY?

“The partnerships forged over many years with equipment manufacturers throughout the world, and the work that we do with the ISO standards committee for mobility equipment, makes our industry knowledge second to none.

“This helps us provide proper guidance for choosing the correct battery technology for each specific application, rather than selling just one solution based on whatever product happens to be in stock at the time.

“Also, being wholly owned by East Penn Manufacturing, one of the largest battery manufacturers in the world, we have access to technical expertise that most battery companies can only dream of.”

LITHIUM BATTERIES SEEM TO BE INCREASING IN POPULARITY – DO YOU SEE THESE AS A THREAT TO YOUR OWN BATTERIES?

“We believe that lithium has its place within the mobility industry but is not

necessarily the correct technology for all applications.

“In the US, we supply a lithium product for the renewable energy market, and it has certainly been a terrific solution for that application.

“We continue to work closely with our parent company, who have invested heavily into the development of lithium and other advanced battery technologies, to continuously evaluate options for improving battery life, runtimes, and reliability.

“Issues of safety, cost, recyclability, etc, are paramount in considering any new technology destined for power mobility users.

“These factors are at the forefront of all our R&D efforts, and you can rest assured that whenever MK Battery does introduce new battery technologies for this application, they will be safe, cost-effective, and sustainable.”

WHAT PARTICULAR CHALLENGES HAS MK BATTERY ENCOUNTERED OVER THE PAST YEAR, AND HOW HAS IT DEALT WITH THEM?

“Opening a new business entity in a different country, where there is a language barrier, has challenged us over the last 18 months.

“Luckily, we have been able to rely on the whole MK team to help push this project forward and create something

that we are very proud of.

“Now, coming to the end of this process, we get to watch with excitement as our newest operation grows over the coming years.”

CAN YOU DESCRIBE WHAT’S NEXT FOR MK BATTERY OVER THE NEXT 12 MONTHS?

“Whilst the mobility industry will always be one of our primary focuses, we are becoming more and more involved with industries away from our traditional markets.

“We have found so many interesting opportunities that we look forward to exploring these more over the next 12 months.

“Our German expansion will also continue over the coming months/ years, including plans to staff a Customer Service department in Karlsruhe, Germany and to further expand our local van route delivery service within Germany.”

What makes a good head support?

1. Or is that neck support?

The position of our head is critical for many of our day-to-day functions. For a number of people, external assistance is needed to help to move or hold the head into an appropriate position. There’s a choice of items which can be added to a wheelchair which can simply be head rests, or can be more active in a positioning role. In this article we consider the attributes that should be considered in making the device selection.

Our heads are multisensory and multifunctional, so whatever we can do to make full use of these attributes the better the quality of our lives. An appropriate head position is important for hearing, balance, breathing, and eating and swallowing.

Probably most important, alongside these, is vision – not only for practical reasons such as seeing what our hands are doing, where we are going, what’s going on around us, etc., but also for social interactions. For children in school, visual interaction with teachers and classmates leads to better learning outcomes.

We have what is known as our ‘cone of vision’, and this relates to how close to our head’s centreline (both vertically and horizontally) that an object needs to placed for us to be able to see it properly: for full colour perception it should be within 15 to 20 degrees of this centre line (green is the most angle sensitive colour, whereas blue can be seen somewhat more easily in our peripheral vision). It is therefore

important that we can move our head into a position that aligns our cone of vision with the object(s) that we wish to focus on, or that the objects can be moved into this zone.

CONTROLLING THE HEAD

Our head weighs around 6kg, and is perched on top of a couple of relatively small vertebrae, the Atlas (C1) and Axis (C2), that are responsible for our being able to nod and rotate our heads. To maintain control of these movements and return to the midline is dependent on the muscular control offered by the muscles in our necks. A further influence is the degree of kyphotic curvature of the spine leading to the need for cervical extension to get the head into an upright position, so let’s bear in mind what we can do with pelvic and thoracic positioning to offset the kyphotic effects.

On a wheelchair there is often a pad placed behind the head, but what is it for? If it is there to protect the head from snapping back under fast acceleration, then its function is comparable with the item we will find in our car seat i.e. as a ‘restraint’.

More frequently, it will be positioned so that as a seat is reclined and/or

tilted, then the pad acts as a head rest to support the weight of the head as the head is moved backwards. In these cases, the assumption is that the wheelchair occupant has reasonable head control, and therefore has no problems in keeping their head in the midline position, and aligned with a simple pad (Figure 1). But what if there is not sufficient muscular control of the neck position?

It is important to distinguish between a rest and a support, and consider whether we are looking to exert support directly at the head, or via the neck. A head rest will usually be more two dimensional in its approach, and working against gravity in just the one direction, by stopping the head from moving backwards further

42 | Let’s get it clear | thiis.co.uk
Figure 1. A head rest in action1

than needed, whereas a support will be assisting the neck muscles’ work against the effects of gravity in all three dimensions.

HEAD SUPPORT

When working with parts of the body which can move in three dimensions, then we usually are looking for three points of control. Around the pelvis we have many choices, but around the head and neck we have greater restrictions. Around the head, we do not want to apply pads that might restrict any of the sensory organs. Around the neck, we need to avoid any risks of strangulation or restricting blood flow to the brain. The result has been that in the marketplace there are various solutions which get more complex as the wheelchair occupant’s needs become more complex. Some are applied to the head (Figure 2) and some around the neck.

Around the head, the best position for support is under the occiput, provided that it is pronounced enough to get a pad under it. Some of these posterior pads have the means to mount additional small lateral and

even somewhat anterior pads (and/or switches).

A hint here: use your hands to find how the person reacts to moderate pressure at the position you intend the pad to touch. Some people will lean into that pressure, while others may lean away. Make use of the person’s natural reflexes to aid your positioning aims.

NECK SUPPORTS

Providing more circumferential support under the head can best come from a neck support. Here there are options, such as the ‘Headmaster Collar’ (Figure 3) which provides some load-bearing under the chin2

In motor racing, we see drivers wearing a Hans neck support, which helps keep their head in position when under strong acceleration and deceleration forces3. For the wheelchair user, there are parallel styled ‘assistive technology’ devices which give support around the neck when gravity is trying to pull the head off the midline, and where the anterior support for the device is across the chest, such as employed in the i2i (Figure 4).

A separate application for a neck device is the TOT Collar (Figure 5) which was designed originally for children with infant muscular torticollis4. The TOT Collar is designed to provide a stimulus to the lateral aspect of the skull. The user moves away from this stimulus towards a new central corrected position. Adoption of a new, normal head position provides the ability to reset perception of horizontal, and so maintain the corrected head position. This is also used with adults where it’s appropriate to provide a stimulus to encourage realignment of the head.

HEAD SUPPORT MOUNTING CONSIDERATIONS

We’ve chosen an appropriate pad or set of pads, but how do we get them into the right position? In the next article we will consider the choices that should be considered when mounting a head support.

By ramping the flared seat to create a pommel, additional comfort and security is achievable. The support is quickly and easily vacuum-moulded via a foot or hand pump, and it can also be remoulded as needs dictate. Available in three sizes (Adult/Junior/Infant), there are also optional covers in quilted cotton or 3D spacer, plus adjustable straps to help secure the product in place if required.

This all-inclusive emergency fall detection system sends notifications to offsite carers using the mobile phone network and/or home or business Wi-Fi. The lightweight wristband can be worn continuously, even while in bed. The sensor, with adjustable fall/drop distance, is designed to reliably detect a fall with minimum false alarms. An SOS manual press button can also be used to signal for help, activating the contact hub directly. An optional pager or portable alarm receiver can be purchased for a home carer.

Pivotell automatic pill dispensers are highly effective in helping vulnerable adults remember to take their medication. Their use often results in improved health, more independence, and a better quality of life.

The Pivotell Advance presents the users correct medication at the correct time of day or night whilst keeping all other pills locked out of sight. For added security, a self-locking shutter over the lid opening prevents access to the medication tray except at alarm time. This stops the possibility of double dosing or forced movement of the medication tray and helps the user remain compliant with their medication regime offering reassurance to family members.
