Welcome! Independent mobility retailers looking to improve customer experience do not necessarily need to start with an expensive piece of software or a major refurbishment. This is the advice of retail expert Mike Glynn, who discuss the importance of keeping the customer relationship human (p22). One retailer who is invested in ‘keeping it human’ with a focus on face-to-face customer service is Mills Mobility (p25). This independent mobility equipment specialist in Hereford is celebrating 10 years in business next June, and THIIS catches up with its director and founder Greg Mills. A provider of mobility scooters and wheelchairs for over 40 years, TGA Mobility recently launched the new WHILL C Lite wheelchair, a lightweight electric folding wheelchair. Daniel Stone, Managing Director at TGA Mobility, shares more about the launch, and other news from the company (p35). Plus, in his latest article, Dr Barend ter Haar of BES Healthcare looks at air travel accessibility and what’s going on in the background to improve travel prospects for wheelchair occupants (p42). For retailers looking to expand on their selection of seating and cushion solutions for customers, check out some of the latest and most innovative products in the Retailers’ Choice (p12) and Buyers’ Guide (p48) features. A round-up of the key trade stories for business leaders to digest
Double silver success for Savaria Stairlift provider Savaria UK is celebrating a double award success after securing two Silver Awards at the UK Customer Experience Awards 2026. The company received Silver Awards in both ‘Best Business Transformation’ and ‘Best Innovation’ at the event, which was held at Wembley Stadium, London. The awards recognised Savaria's commitment to improvement, operational excellence and delivering an enhanced customer experience.
The achievements follow a significant customer service transformation programme at the firm, introduced in 2025 to improve the speed, efficiency and quality of support provided across Savaria’s customer service operations. Key achievements include an over 70 per cent reduction in customer waiting times, providing faster access to support, and enhanced communication, including proactive appointment updates and strengthened feedback processes.
CareCo champions accessible sport Mobility retailer CareCo has officially partnered with Manor Park Walking Rugby Team, unveiling its new match kit during the squad’s 7–5 victory against Earlsdon Amblers. The new kit, showcasing the CareCo colours, was designed internally by the CareCo team and provided to Manor Park for a fresh new look. the sponsorship provides practical support for a grassroots team that gives people an opportunity to return to a sport they love, meet new people, and stay active in an inclusive environment. The nationwide retailer last month opened a new mobility showroom in Swindon (pictured below). Located on the Elgin Industrial Estate, it is CareCo’s 41st showroom.
in brief...
New appointment at Rise & Recline Bespoke seating and bed specialist Rise & Recline has announced that Chris Heckford has rejoined the business as regional sales manager. Chris began his sales career in the mobility industry in 2015 as an area sales manager at Rise & Recline before later progressing to larger roles at other firms. In his new role, Chris will be responsible for driving sales of riser recliner chairs and electric profiling beds, supporting retailers with product knowledge, training and marketing initiatives. He will also explore new
MK BATTERY ACQUISITION
markets, with a particular focus on independent mobility retailers and care providers. Rise & Recline has been developing its electric bed range over the past few years, and its new Elegance Range is now available.
Permobil launches compact powered wheelchair Mobility manufacturer Permobil has announced the launch of the M4 Nexa, a compact mid-wheel power wheelchair designed to accommodate a broader range of users, including smaller individuals. The compact power wheelchair has been designed to deliver a full range of power seating functions, including anterior tilt, tilt, recline, elevating leg rests, and seat elevation. Its base has a tight turning radius making navigating
tight spaces easier, while compact front casters allow the footplates to tuck beneath the chair. The M4 Nexa has a 15-inch seat-to-floor height with anterior tilt, enabling more level transfers and broader access to standard height tables. With seat depths from 10-22 inches in a single seating system, the M4 Nexa offers a broad depth range. It also incorporates Permobil Connect, enabling battery and range visibility, fault alerts before the chair stops, personalisation, and a host of other empowering capabilities.
MK Battery has announced the acquisition of Sironi Batterie, an Italian battery company that has served its customers for more than 100 years. Founded in 1924, Sironi Batterie boasts long-standing customer relationships throughout Italy. For decades, Sironi Batterie has enjoyed a close association with East Penn Manufacturing, the US-based parent company of MK Battery. That relationship, and the progression to partnering with MK Battery in Italy, the companies state, makes this acquisition a natural fit. INDEFINITE CE RECOGNITION The UK Government has confirmed that it will continue to recognise CE marked medical devices and in vitro diagnostic devices (IVDs) in Great Britain on an indefinite basis. The decision follows the MHRA’s targeted consultation, with the policy intended to maintain market access, reduce duplicative regulatory processes, and support continuity of supply. Implementation will require legislative changes. The government states that, subject to parliamentary approval, these will be made before 30 June 2028, the end of the earliest relevant transition period. NEW WHEELCHAIR SERVICES Integrated wheelchair services provider AJM Healthcare has opened a new wheelchair service in Dudley after being awarded the contract by NHS Black Country Integrated Care Board (ICB). Ross Care, meanwhile, has taken over responsibility for wheelchair and postural management services for residents in Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent. The contract was commissioned by NHS Stafffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent Integrated Care Board. The services provide a single point of access for adults and children.

SHOWROOM FUNDRAISER Scottish mobility retailer Thistle Help recently raised over £1,700 for a local children's charity by holding a coffee morning at its Irvine showroom. The retailer has been hosting a fundraising coffee morning at its showroom for the past three years, with the highlight being a prize draw.
Electric dream Mobility equipment supplier Monarch Mobility has unveiled a new four-in-one electric rollator that adapts to its user’s needs as they change throughout the day. The Carbon Edge rollator has been designed to bring multiple mobility solutions together in one product, according to Monarch Mobility. Perfect for users seeking greater flexibility than a traditional rollator, the rollator offers powered assistance when walking becomes tiring. From assisted travel in 'transport mode' and powered support in 'walking assist mode' to resistance-based training in 'rehabilitation mode' and seated independence using the joystickcontrolled 'powerchair mode', the rollator delivers flexible support as the user’s needs changes. Built around a lightweight carbon fibre frame with twin rear motors, adjustable handles and backrest, the Carbon Edge features comfortable seating and a compact folding design. Available in silver and red, its integrated seat, footplates and storage basket make switching between walking and seated use straightforward for the end user.

THE RETAILERS’

Seating & cushions
Wondering which seating products and cushions are grabbing mobility companies’ attention? This month we asked retailers in the industry to highlight a product that stands out for them…
Air Cushion by Amylior “The Amylior Air Cushion is a practical wheelchair seating solution designed to provide comfort, pressure redistribution and support for users who spend extended periods sitting in their wheelchair. Its air-based design helps distribute the user's weight across the seating surface, reducing concentrated pressure on vulnerable areas and supporting everyday pressure care management. “The cushion is designed to adapt to the user's body shape, providing a supportive seating surface while helping maintain a comfortable sitting position. This makes it particularly suitable for wheelchair users who require additional pressure management as part of their daily care routine. “The air-cell cushion can be cleaned easily and is machine washable, making it practical for everyday use in both domestic and care environments. A choice of sizes and configurations allows the cushion to be tailored to individual seating requirements. “At Ability Plus, we recognise the importance of combining pressure care with correct wheelchair positioning. The Amylior Air Cushion is a product we recommend considering as part of an individual seating assessment, particularly Graham where pressure Johnson management, Managing stability and ease Director at Ability Plus of maintenance ability-plus. are priorities.” co.uk

Sensaflex 200 Cushion by Alerta Medical “Having the correct cushion can make a huge difference to the user’s sitting position and comfort in a wheelchair. We have sold many cushions over the years to customers but the cushion that is most popular in our showroom is the Sensaflex 200. “The Sensaflex 200 cushion is a medium-risk cushion built with castellated foam. The foam cushion provides effective comfort, care and pressure redistribution for users in hospital, nursing and care home environments. “The cushion only comes in one size (17"x17"x4"), with a maximum load of 150kg and a minimum load of 40kg. “It has a multi-stretch and vapour permeable PU cover, which is water resistant and machine washable. It can also be tumble dried on a low heat. “It is an ideal entry level cushion at a competitive price for people looking for comfort whilst sitting in a wheelchair for a period of time. “There are other cushions in the Sensaflex range but this one seems to be the most popular with our customers.” Laura Hays Director of Thistle Help www.thistlehelp.co.uk

The Symphony Rise & Recline Chair by Recliners “This chair gives the customer everything they need and expect from a domestic healthcare chair, from its smooth and robust mechanisms to its excellent functionality and aesthetics. It manages to deliver a comfortable and supportive solution with many configurable functions. “For us, the significant features of the Symphony are its excellent integrated pressure management options, while the removable seat cushions allows for quick and easy access. “Another bonus is the postural support that can be achieved with the foam lateral backs. Its well sculpted
and crafted design is reminiscent of the bucket type Recaro style backs that can not only deliver amazing support and comfort but can help manage posture giving great trunk support with positive midline positioning. The backs, like the seat, are interchangeable so we get a product which can evolve long term with the user.”
Cooling Gel Memory Foam Lumbar Support Cushion by Aidapt “This support cushion improves posture and relieves pressure on the spine, helping to reduce tension fatigue and back ache. “The cushion has a highdensity memory foam designed to provide support around the lower back, combined with a cooling gel strip intended to help reduce heat build-up. This is complemented by a removable and washable air-mesh cover, which allows airflow through the cushion, a useful feature for anyone spending several hours seated. “An adjustable strap on the back allows the cushion to be secured to a chair, helping to keep it correctly positioned rather than sliding around during use. “For me, its versatility is one of its most useful features. While its official purpose is to support the lower back and improve comfort on the spine when seated, I have found its compact size also makes it particularly useful for a seat cushion for smaller folding mobility scooters where the standard seat can leave something to be desired. “They are often simply rigid plastic and this lumbar cushion fits well and with the strap on the back that can be tucked under the seat securing it in place, it makes the user more comfortable.” Karen Sheppard Managing Director of People First Mobility peoplefirst mobility.com

Billy Finnie Operations Manager at Mobility Scotland mobility scotlandltd.co.uk
2-Way Sculptured Support Cushion by Able2 “The 2-Way Sculptured Support Cushion is designed to provide versatile comfort and support for the seating area and lower back, particularly during prolonged sitting and longer journeys. “Its reversible design offers two distinct surfaces to suit individual preferences. One side features a contoured nodular foam surface, providing a textured support option, whilst the reverse offers a flatter surface for a more even seating experience. This flexibility allows the cushion to be positioned to support either the back or the bottom, depending on the user's needs. “A key feature is the specially designed cut-out at the rear of the cushion, which helps relieve pressure around the tailbone (coccyx). By reducing direct contact in this sensitive area, the design aims to improve comfort, particularly when sitting for extended periods or travelling over uneven outdoor terrain. “Combining adaptable positioning with thoughtful ergonomic design, this two-way cushion offers a practical solution for those seeking greater comfort and flexibility in a variety of seating situations.” Connie Downie Franchise & Marketing Assistant at Ableworld ableworld.co.uk

Sherwood Perching Stool by Performance Health “Sometimes it's the simplest products that make the biggest difference to everyday life, and the Sherwood Folding Perching Stool is a perfect example. “At Ability Superstore, we're always looking for products that combine practicality, comfort and good design, and the Sherwood ticks all three boxes. “Perching stools are invaluable for people who struggle to stand for extended periods, whether preparing meals, washing at the bathroom sink or carrying out everyday household tasks. By providing a comfortable, semi-seated position, they help reduce fatigue while allowing users to maintain their independence. “What particularly appeals to us about the Sherwood is its folding design. Traditional perching stools can be rather cumbersome, particularly in smaller kitchens and bathrooms. The Sherwood folds away neatly when not required, making it an excellent option where space is limited. “It's also height-adjustable, with a generously padded seat, wide leg base and non-slip rubber feet for added stability. With a maximum user weight of 149kg, it's a reassuringly robust piece of equipment. “For us, the real appeal is its versatility. It's not an overly complicated product, nor does it need to be. It's a thoughtfully designed everyday living aid that addresses a very real problem.”

Ride Custom Seating by Sunrise Medical
Marion May Clinical Specialist OT, Unique Mobility uniquemobility. co.uk
16 | Retailers’ choice | thiis.co.uk
“I like to recommend Ride Custom Seating for clients with complex postural needs and where off-the-shelf seating solutions are not providing sufficient support. “One recent person who came to us was experiencing significant pain and discomfort in her existing wheelchair and had been relying on additional cushions and pads to improve her positioning. Following a client-centred comprehensive postural assessment in her home, we identified that a two-part custom moulded seating system on a new powered wheelbase would offer the individualised support she required. “What stood out about the Ride system is the ability to neatly conform the seating around the client’s individual anatomical and postural presentation. In this case, it enabled us to provide a stable
base of support, improve postural alignment, manage pressure and distribute support more effectively, while still prioritising independent function and comfort. “We worked alongside Faith Brown, clinical lead at Ride Custom Seating, to complete the moulding process in the client’s home, with the finished system interfaced onto a new QUICKIE Q700 HD powered wheelchair. “The result was a seating solution that addressed all the client’s clinical needs without making the equipment feel dominant. Her reaction when she saw the finished chair was: “Now you see Me, not the wheelchair.” That sums up the value of truly bespoke seating – supporting posture, comfort and function while keeping the individual at the centre of the solution.”

Adelphi Care Chair by Primacare
Sedeo Seating System by Sunrise Medical “The Sedeo seating system must be one of the most flexible and engineer friendly systems to work with on Sunrise Medical powerchairs and the Ibis tilt-in-space chair. “The variety of back styles and cushions, along with the adjustable frame, accommodates most users both with more active ability and those who require a much higher level of support to improve alignment and promote good posture. “We find by far the most popular is the extra deep contour active backrest which holds the user in a comfortable position and most importantly does not come around in front of the individual, resulting in us seeing the user rather than a mass of supports. “Ease of adjustment and sliding rail systems allows cushions to be set to the client’s needs and resized if the clients position or weight fluctuates. This is also incredibly useful for the re-issue of the chair in the future for refurbishment or change of user. The quality of the cushion also means that it provides a high level of comfort. “Being a modular system, armrests, seat cushions, headrests and backrests are easily interchangeable, futureproofing the system and allows for more personalisation of the chair.” Greg Mills Managing Director of Mills Mobility www. millsmobility aids.co.uk
18 | Retailers’ choice | thiis.co.uk
“While there are some extremely good rise & recliner chairs on the market with pressure-relieving qualities and some limited postural control features, they stop short of being a true nursing standard long term seating solution. “There are hundreds of retailers out in the wider community and it becomes very difficult to rise above the crowd unless you can offer the next level of customer solutions that will result in referrals from healthcare professionals and care home specialists. “The Primacare range of specialist chairs are easy to stock and specify due to its extreme adjustability and options list. “The Adelphi is made in Britian and comes with a long list of standard features such as independent tilt-in-space, telescopic extending legrest, removable arms and seat cushion, as well as adjustable back angle, seat depth, seat width, arm height and removable footplate. “It also has the option to be with manual control or electric and is easily moved whilst the client is in the chair. "The Adelphi offers a very cost-effective solution that can work with clients that are hoisted.” Alastair Gibbs Managing Director at TPG DisableAids tpg-disableaids.co.uk

Turning trust into turnover The product will always matter, but increasingly, so will how quickly the phone is answered, as Mike Glynn explains… Retailers looking to improve customer experience do not necessarily need to start with an expensive piece of software or a major refurbishment. A useful first step is simply to follow a customer journey from beginning to end and ask what really happens. Try to imagine somebody submits an enquiry at 10am on a Monday. The retailer needs to think about who is seeing that enquiry and how quickly it is responding to it. In addition, what happens if the first telephone call is not answered? If the customer says that they are interested but not quite ready to buy, the retailer needs to consider what the agreed next step will be. Further through the journey, when the retailer has provided a quotation they need to ensure that the next action is clear to the customer. Customer experience is usually created through dozens of ordinary moments rather than one extraordinary one. Turnover is clearly important, as is margin and profitability, but while sales figures tell you what happened at the end of the process, they do not necessarily tell you why it happened. A retailer might generate plenty of enquiries and still have a sales problem. Or it might think it has a marketing problem when the real issue is that enquiries are not being followed up quickly enough. That is why businesses should get clarity about the stages before and after the sale.
22 | Insight | thiis.co.uk
Think about where enquiries are coming from and how quickly customers receive a response. These are not numbers for the sake of creating another spreadsheet. They help identify where the customer journey is working and where money may be quietly leaking out of the business. While one retailer may need more enquiries, another may already have enough enquiries and need to become better at handling the ones it receives. Those are two very different business problems, even though both owners may initially say that they need more sales. CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE There is a tendency to think about customer experience as something separate from the harder commercial realities of running a business, but the opposite is the case. Customer experience affects whether an enquiry progresses, and whether a customer chooses you rather than somebody else. It has the potential to influence conversion, retention, repeat revenue and the cost of winning future customers. For most independent retailers, improvement does not require changing everything at once. Start with one part of the customer journey. Look at how enquiries are handled, and measure the current response time. Make it clear who owns each enquiry and what should happen if the customer does not answer the first call. Then look at delivery and installation and check whether customers receive consistent information and whether somebody follows up afterwards. After that, examine existing customer records. Your business needs to easily identify who bought what, and when. It needs to see which customers may be due a service. There may also be customers the business has not communicated with for several years despite
having supplied significant equipment. These changes may appear operational rather than exciting, but that is often where sustainable growth comes from. THE OPPORTUNITY AHEAD Independent mobility retailers have good reason to be confident about the future, but increasing demand should not create complacency. Customers will continue to research more, compare more and expect more from the organisations they deal with. The businesses best placed to respond will be those that combine the traditional strengths of the independent sector – knowledge, trust, local relationships and personal service with better processes behind the scenes. The product will always matter, but increasingly, so will how quickly the phone is answered, whether the right questions are asked, whether customers are kept informed, whether promises are kept and whether the business is still there for them after the sale. Those details may not appear on a product specification sheet but tor the customer they can be the difference between simply buying something and deciding they have found a business they trust. For an independent retailer, that trust remains one of the hardest competitive advantages for anyone else to copy.

Staff members outside the Mills Mobility showroom in Hereford
As it approaches its 10-year milestone, Mills Mobility reflects on how a reputation for good customer service has contributed to its year-on-year growth… Mills Mobility is an independent mobility equipment specialist in Hereford, specialising in everything from wheelchairs and mobility scooters to stairlifts, seating and hoists. Greg Mills, director of Mills Mobility, was one year in from opening his showroom in Hereford when THIIS last interviewed him in 2018, and now he and his team are looking forward to celebrating 10 years in business next June. FAMILY BUSINESS Mills Mobility was established as a family business in 2017. Greg’s mother,
a former nurse for 37 years, was involved, as was his father, a technician, and his sister, who had a retail management background. Fast forward to 2026 and the business has grown and evolved much since then. While Greg’s mother still works in the showroom his father is fully retired and Mills Mobility has welcomed new members of the team. “Each staff member plays an important role in maintaining the reputation and efficiency of the company,” says Greg. “The small things that each staff member does creates the system and reputation we have today.” Key members of the team include
Gareth Pugh, who became the first employee in 2018 and has grown with the company to become its general manager, overseeing the servicing department and HR, amongst other tasks. Head engineer, Darren Todd, has almost 30 years industry experience in the field and overseas installations and maintenance. Yvonne Bennett is the sales manager and oversees Mills Mobility’s sales department and is an assessor. Greg adds: “Every member of our team is important, and the company would not be where it is today without the commitment and effort of each and everyone.”

Inside Mills Mobility’s showroom
REFLECTING ON 10 YEARS The first few years of any new business has its challenges, Greg explains, and he says that it became important to embrace and adapt to those situations when they arose. One of the retailer’s main difficulties in the first few years was the ability to become trade partners with some of the mainstream manufacturers, Greg says. “As a new trading entity some were reluctant to engage and for others it was an outright ‘no’. This did not discourage us but only made us more driven to succeed.” The few manufacturers that gave their unwavering support throughout that time, he says, remain key accounts to this day. With two vehicles on the road, Mills Mobility continued its growth trajectory throughout 2019, taking on additional staff to allow it to support an ever-increasing number of products, including overhead hoists and stairlifts. As for many in the sector, the onset of the COVID pandemic brought about some uncertainty surrounding the business but Mills Mobility’s reputation
26 | Retailer spotlight | thiis.co.uk
“The small things that each staff member does creates the system and reputation we have today” within the key local authority and NHS supply chains had grown massively by then, Greg explains, and the business continued to enjoy “tremendous growth” during this time. In fact, staff, who had initially been furloughed, had to be brought back quickly, and to maintain safety standards and to cope with increased demand additional staff in key support roles were recruited. Greg says: “We maintained our standards and supported vulnerable clients, ensured our supply chain was consistent, repairs prioritised and kept our clients and staff independent and safe.” He continues: “As the country moved out of COVID, Mills Mobility had an array of service and maintenance contracts with new housing associations and local authorities as healthcare professionals recommended and used our services.” In 2021 the training suite at the retailer’s headquarters had to be turned into more office space for
the growing team as it continued to support its growing client base. The business now books venues and holds training sessions and demonstrations throughout Herefordshire and Wales, and Greg says they have seen an increase in attendees by bringing the events to these areas. The business has continued to offer the same high level of service and build on its reputation, with growth continuing year-on-year. Greg adds: “This growth has not gone unnoticed by our suppliers, and many that were hesitant or we had the no conversation with back in our early days are now approaching us.” With Mills Mobility reaching its 10-year milestone the business is looking forward to running a further series of events for healthcare professionals throughout 2027, and most importantly, “ensuring plenty of cake is to hand.”

PARTNERING WITH MOTABILITY Mills Mobility became Motabilityaccredited in 2023, which allows it to support a larger client base. In 2025, Greg set up a sister company, Trade Mobility, a collection agency for early and end-of-term Motability products. Greg adds: “Whilst setting this up we made sure not to lose sight of what has enabled our growth over the years, and Trade Mobility was created to support other dealers like us in giving access to quality, pre-owned mobility products. “We wanted to ensure that we can still support our customers and as we do not sell nationwide we have developed our own network of dealers that can access the pre-owned scooters to stock their own showroom with affordable mobility solutions.” Mills Mobility also operates a Shopmobility service in Hereford, and offers a range of both mobility scooters and wheelchairs for those that require it. Greg adds: “We have regular users for this service that we provide parking for at our unit, and they head into town.” This service has also been broadened to offer overnight, weekly and monthly rentals for holidaymakers and those who need short-term mobility solutions.
“The longevity of a business is built on long term reputation rather than a quick sale”

The training suite was converted to office space for the growing retailer
As a supporter of the local community, Mills Mobility business provides free repairs and servicing to donated scooters and wheelchairs that have been passed to local charity shops, to enable them to raise much needed funds for vital community services. PROUD REPUTATION Greg says that he is proud of what the business has achieved and where it is now. “The longevity of a business is built on long term reputation rather than a quick sale. The team has grown to 20 committed staff, with a fleet of 10 vehicles on the road full time. “We are accredited by most major manufacturers and most importantly still enjoy coming to work each day.” Customers are offered no-obligation assessments in the showroom or free home visits if requested.
Greg says: “We ensure our products are competitively priced and carry an array of products to meet almost all budgets. Whether a customer is looking at a high or lost cost solution the level of service should never be anything but first class.” Mills Mobility employs a dedicated team to take care of service and aftersales maintenance. This team includes two full-time service members and six full-time field service engineers, Greg says. “We undertake all service and repair works in-house to ensure we are consistently delivering to the highest standards, and all our service team undertake regular update training. “We also ensure we carry a large selection of spare parts to enable first time fixes where possible and all our engineers’ vehicles carry an array of the commonly used parts. This ‘firsttime fix’ solution not only impresses

our clients but also keeps our costs more efficient and reduces revisits and customer frustration.”
Mills Mobility often has stands at public events, such as the Royal Welsh Show
“Technical support for our engineers on installed products is a must-have”
SPREADING THE WORD Mills Mobility promotes itself face-toface with potential customers at events rather than through media advertising. Greg says: “This year we have set up stands in many towns and our big event this year was at the Royal Welsh Show 2026, which was attended by 250,000 visitors over four days.” The business also actively uses its social media profiles to engage with customers and it has invested in developing its website in recent years to ensure that it has an online presence. Online buyers are not a target market, Greg adds, however, as Mills Mobility is focused on face-to-face customer service and showroom sales. “We believe in ensuring we match the right product for each individual and like to personally support all our equipment. As a regional supplier it is much more difficult to manage these things online,” Greg explains. “E-commerce has its place within the industry, but you cannot build the same relationship with clients over the internet, and it is such a cost volatile market. It is, in many cases, a race to the bottom. “Many of our private clients want the personal service and many products may look the same but are very different, which you won’t get the feel from looking at online images.
30 | Retailer spotlight | thiis.co.uk
“I do believe an online presence is necessary today, but clients do feel the value of showroom and home assessments.” E-commerce also brings it with the problem of cheap unregulated import products, Greg says. “We all see low-quality products advertised online, which gives a perceived value to a particular product category. What many consumers don’t see is that spares are not readily available and there is no longevity in the product.” BESTSELLING PRODUCTS Over the summer months Greg has seen a big demand in lightweight mobility products. He says: “Clients are not as cost-sensitive providing the product is manageable. We are seeing carbon folding products becoming
much more popular, with models like the Sunrise S50 Carbon, the new Monarch Smarti Plus and the Q50r Carbon. Lightweight aluminum mobility scooters have also been very popular of late, Grey says. “The new MK II Illusion by One Rehab proved popular as well as the tried and tested Motion Healthcare Alumina.” Products with aesthetic appeal
SMALL CHANGES
Trade Mobility is a sister company and is a collection agency for early and end of term Motability products
have also become more important with customers in recent years, Greg has noted, with the Rehasence Artline walkers proving a big hit with customers. Greg says that Mills Mobility only uses suppliers who offer consistent quality, continuity of supply and aftercare support. He explains: “As a retailer you are the front line between the manufacturer and customer and your reputation can be affected by the manufacturers you choose to work with. “For many of the customers we assist their equipment is their lifeline or only form of mobility and if this lets them down the impact to them can be massive. “The manufacturers we partner with understand that it is a two-way
relationship between them and us as a dealer. If we are supported and can provide a quality product, this in turn leads to more satisfied customers, a better reputation and, in turn, further sales. “It is both the manufacturers' and our interest to get this right. Technical support for our engineers on installed products is a must-have, as well as comprehensive training from our manufacturers.” Greg adds: “Manufacturers that welcome our staff to their factories and training facilities and provide this training will always be our preferred partners. “We all know that occasionally faults occur or develop with product, but it is how this is handled that sets manufacturers apart.”
The cost of living is influencing many established dealers and manufacturers with product, business rates and general overheads increasing, says Greg, which in turn puts increased pressure on some companies. He thinks there is no quick fix for this issue and it is unavoidable for many businesses. “By making small changes, such as carrying spares in our vans, in turn maximising efficiency of our staff, we have been able to mitigate these increases without any compromise to our service levels, keeping the company healthy.” At this moment Greg says that the business is still experiencing natural growth. “We have a great working relationship with our manufacturers and suppliers and a dedicated team at Mills." As for the future? Greg says: “We will be exploring options for a new second showroom during 2027, however our priority, as always, will be our customers.” millsmobilityaids.co.uk

“Travel and accessibility are vital aspects for our market” our products to a new audience. “The WHILL C Lite was a feature on our stand, and we showed the WHILL Modo for the first time, which was also very well received. In addition, we had a new Breeze S4 Solar incorporating a solar panel into the solid canopy roof, ready for launch in 2027. “We spent quite a lot of time with visitors on the test track and found this additional location of the event to be a great success. We are looking forward to supporting Naidex North next year too.” CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT TGA MOBILITY’S RECENT COLLABORATION WITH EVENT MOBILITY? “Event Mobility now has a fleet of around 450 TGA scooters and manual wheelchairs, used at events up and down the country, all year round. Working with Event Mobility gives us a real insight into what end users expect of our products, testing them to the maximum in a variety of settings. “From Badminton Horse Trials, Glastonbury Music Festival, Golf Championships from the Scottish Open to the Ryder Cup in Rome, and over 100 other events during the year. “The amazing team at Event Mobility ensure people get to visit and enjoy

events that they wouldn't otherwise be able to. We are proud to support them and see it as a ringing endorsement of the quality of our product range.” WHY ARE PARTNERSHIPS WITH ORGANISATIONS SUCH AS TRANSPORT FOR LONDON IMPORTANT? “We continue to support Transport
for London, Northern Rail and work with other organisations such as the National Trust and Forestry England, all associations we see as endorsements of our products and values. “We partnered with Transport for London to help streamline accessible travel across the city's public transport network, allowing visitors with pre-approved powerchairs and scooters to travel easily on the London Underground, buses and the Overground Rail network. “Travel and accessibility are vital aspects for our market, and we will continue to work with organisations and are attending a Department for Transport working group this month with the emphasis being on air travel.” WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM TGA MOBILITY IN 2027? “We do all that we can to support the industry and events, from Naidex to Motability Scheme Live, and we will bring a range of new product launches from the start of 2027.”

Improving wheelchair air travel Actions to be taken to reduce risks of damage to wheelchairs during air travel A person’s wheelchair can be their legs, and therefore when travelling by air, when separated from their chair while it is placed in an aircraft hold, they should have every reasonable expectation that the chair is returned to them, at their destination, in full working order. Unfortunately, that has not always been the case, causing a great deal of inconvenience and upset – so what’s going on in the background to improve travel prospects for wheelchair occupants? In the US, the Rehabilitation Engineering and Assistive Technology Society of North America (RESNA) has been publishing standards1 for wheelchair manufacturers, airlines, and airport baggage handlers to educate them and provide best practice for all concerned to reduce the risk of harm. This autumn there has been a new ISO standards working group (ISO TC173 SC1 WG13 Wheelchair Air Travel) set up to convert the US standards into a set of international standards, so that there is an increased chance that the wheelchair is handled the same way at either end of an air journey. Currently, there are five parts in the works that, between them, cover different aspects as required

by people interacting with a person with a disability, to people who are handling the wheelchairs, to what manufacturers are required to do to make their chairs airworthy. The following summarises what to expect to find covered in each part. ISO 26962-12 The first part introduces basic terms, definitions, and foundations for the following parts. Different kinds of chairs and their accessories that might be encountered are introduced, as well as specialty airport wheelchairs that

are used to help transfer passengers with a disability into their aircraft seats. There is guidance for personnel as to how to interact with these passengers with understanding and respect, together with an awareness of what the passenger’s needs might be. This part also covers areas of training required and looks at the varying roles of the different individuals who will be interacting with the passenger and with their equipment at the different steps along the passenger’s journey. These ‘touch points’ are when booking the flight, airport kerb-side, check-in, departure gate, ramp agent interaction, baggage handling, and any flight connections and transfers. ISO 26962-23 Part 2 looks at the information that the passenger might need when making their booking, and what the airline might need from the passenger. Depending on the size and make of plane there may be restrictions as to what the airline can handle. For single aisle planes the cargo door height for the majority of aircraft means that the wheelchair height needs to be under 87 cm if it is to be loaded on its wheels. This is the requirement for
Figure 1. Example of a powered wheelchair air travel configuration card - front page
Boeing aircraft where the cargo door opens inwards. Airbus cargo doors open outwards which means that a slightly taller chair might be accepted. Depending on the seating capacity of the aircraft the on-board facilities vary. For passengers with powerchairs, they will be expected to remove detachable items before handing over their chair for loading into the cargo hold. There will need to be space in the overhead lockers for these components. For manual chairs, in the larger aircraft there should be space to store foldable manual chairs inside the cabin – on a first-come-first-served basis. Practical aspects such as toilet accessibility varies between different aircraft, and these can be enquired about at the time of booking. ISO 26962-34 Part 3 covers handling procedures for mobility devices to be stowed and transported in commercial passenger aircraft. It provides best practice to reduce the risk of potential damage, or mitigate damage, to mobility devices during air travel, and focuses on what needs to happen to the mobility device to prepare it to be loaded into an

aircraft. This includes lifting points, tie down points, securement straps, etc. ISO 26962-45 This part covers the requirements on wheelchair manufacturers for the labelling of the mobility devices that will enable baggage handlers to know where, for example, to disconnect power, disconnect brakes, disconnect drive, lift the device, and where to affix tie down securement devices. This part also specifies the content of an Air Travel Configuration Card (ATCC) that should be attached to the mobility device providing guidance to the passenger as how to prepare their device for passing over to ground crew, and critical information needed by the ground crew for the chair’s safe handling. For an example of the card, see Figures 1 and 2.
wheelchairs when tipped to fit through shorter height baggage doors does not happen because powered wheelchairs are weak or incapable of being moved or transported on their sides. The damage that has been occurring to the chairs during air travel is a result of the gap between the belt loader and the aircraft (Figure 3), falls from the belt loader, movement of the powered wheelchair using components not designed to handle the forces required to move the product, and failure to remove accessories and components that should be removed or folded and secured during air travel. The proposed solution is a ‘padded tipping plate’. Part 5 of the standard specifies a test loading plate on which a powered wheelchair can be tested to establish

that will be protected by a padded tipping plate while it is on its side. The specification covers the loading plate, the test cushioning between the chair and the plate, and the rear lateral, front lateral, and vertical securement straps (Figure 4). The chair undergoes 6667 drop tests, and needs to show no damage after this, to pass the test. Beneficial Designs, in the US, has designed a padded tipping plate (Figure 5) that meets the specifications of the test plate, that can be used with accredited chairs by passengers who wish to have this used with their chairs when they are travelling7. Feedback from baggage handlers has been that they have found the device easy to use to transfer a chair onto its side, and very effective for facilitated loading into and out of an aircraft cargo hold (Figure 6) as compared with the heavy lifting they had been required to carry out otherwise. THE FUTURE

are published. However, this new ISO project to get international approval of the US standard provides great promise for wheelchair users across the world to be more confident that their chair will travel safely with them across the world. Purchasers of wheelchairs who plan to travel by air should ascertain whether the chair of interest has the labelling and an ATCC, and whether, if in its folded configuration it is still more than 87 cm tall, it has been tested for safe use with a padded tipping plate. The ideal in the future would be that every airline would have a stock of padded tipping plates at every airport, but, for now, concerned travellers will need to provide these for themselves. CG Air by Electric Mobility The CG Air pressure-relieving cushion range has the potential to significantly expand the options available to dealers and rehabilitation professionals. Air cushions have long been established as an important solution for pressure management. However, traditional air cushions can present practical challenges when contaminated by body fluids, particularly where cleaning and infection-control requirements are concerned. CG Air addresses this issue through a machinewashable design. The range is available with 2", 3" and 4" air-cell heights and a wide choice of widths and depths. Its configurations are suitable for power wheelchair users, with applications for manual wheelchair users. There are lightweight options
suitable for ultralight wheelchair applications and potential applications for scooter users. The CG Air design also incorporates features intended to reduce forward and lateral movement during mobility.
