Breaking outdoor accessibility barriers!

Disability advocate Nick Wilson, known online as @disabled. adventurer, has completed a 50km journey along North Devon’s Tarka Trail as part of a campaign highlighting real-world powerchair performance and outdoor accessibility barriers.

To support the challenge, Devon and Cornwall mobility specialists Unique Mobility provided on-route technical support and battery changes.

Nick completed the route using his Quantum Rehab 4Front 2 powerchair, finishing after more than 10 hours of continuous travel.

The challenge marks the first stage of Nick’s #50at50 initiative, a series of 50km journeys undertaken to raise awareness of the practical limitations faced by wheelchair users and to support improved access to outdoor environments. His broader campaign aims to raise funds to provide all-terrain powerchairs for outdoor activity centres across the UK.

Pride in UK manufacturing

Pride Mobility has launched the GoGo Endurance AL+, a mobility scooter that has been fully custom-made in the UK.

The decision to manufacture in the UK allows Pride Mobility to maintain close control over quality while responding quickly to customer needs. By keeping production local, the company ensures consistent standards, faster service support, and a product tailored specifically for UK environments.

“Building in the UK enables us to stay connected to our customers and deliver a product that is truly custom to their needs,” says Paul Clayton, Commercial Director at Pride Mobility. “The GoGo Endurance AL+ is the start of that philosophy – with the aim to grow the UK made range in the future.”

Key features of the scooter include front and rear CTS suspension and solid 8” tyres. It offers up to 18 miles range and a maximum speed of 4mph. Lightweight and transportable, it is available in a range of colours, seat options, and more.

Clearwell Mobility expands its reach

Mobility retailer Clearwell Mobility has acquired two long established mobility retailers in Wiltshire and Oxfordshire.

The acquisitions of The Hearing & Mobility Store and True Mobility increase the number of showrooms operated by Clearwell Mobility from

11 to 16 and is expected to boost its turnover by over 50 per cent.

The Hearing & Mobility Store was established by Willie McIvor in 2008 and operates four showrooms across Wiltshire and Gloucestershire with a central warehouse and workshop in Wroughton. Its showrooms stock a wide range of mobility equipment and home healthcare products, and employ 18 staff.

Founded in 2002 by husband and wife team, Andy and Angie Burns, True Mobility operates from a spacious showroom in Didcot, South Oxfordshire and it employs a team of six staff. Both businesses are key providers of Motability scooters and powerchairs.

Established in 2004 by husband and wife team, Duncan and Natasha Gillett, with a single showroom in Brighton, Clearwell Mobility has grown to become the largest retailer in the South East.

STANNAH STAIRLIFT AWARD

Stairlift provider Stannah has been recognised for outstanding design excellence, receiving the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2026 for the JOYA stairlift. Judged by an independent panel of international experts, the award recognises an approach to design where safety and comfort remain paramount, while directly addressing the long-standing stigma associated with mobility aids in the home. Stannah say that the JOYA has been designed to seamlessly integrate into everyday living, using restrained aesthetics, a compact profile and carefully considered materials to reduce visual impact while improving everyday usability.

Roma appoints business development director

Terence Clark has stepped into his role as Business Development Director at Roma Medical Aids, bringing with him over 25 years of experience across leadership, sales and strategy within the mobility sector.

David Elstone, CEO of Roma Medical Aids, commented: “When we met Terence Clark, it was obvious he brought something different. He’s spent over 20 years as a dealer at Clark & Partners,

then moved into Stannah, and more recently led Topro.

“That gives him a proper, end-to-end view of the sector, what works, what doesn’t, and where suppliers often get it wrong. Too often in this category we default to product and price. The reality is, dealers need clarity, support and a range that’s easy to sell. Terence understands that because he’s been on both sides of the table.”

Retailers interested in making an appointment with Terence can call 07474 525284 or via e-mail at tclark@romamedical.co.uk.

'Care first' for 30 years

Stairlifts Scotland is celebrating 30 years of supplying mobility and specialist care equipment to customers across Scotland.

The firm, which supplies stairlifts, hoists and bathrooms aids, amongst other products, also furnishes public Changing Places accessible toilets.

Stairlifts Scotland was founded in 1996 by Morna Barry, a therapist with a clinical background. When her former employer refused to repair or relocate older stairlifts for clients

who couldn’t afford new ones, she decided to build a company that did things differently.

Lisa Barry, Managing Director of Stairlifts Scotland, says that this ‘care first’ ethos remains a guiding principle today. She says: “We don’t just look at the staircase; we look at the person using it.”

THE RETAILERS’ CHOICE Mobility accessories and power add-ons

Wondering which accessories and power add-ons are grabbing mobility companies’ attention? This month we asked retailers in the industry to highlight a product that stands out for them…

Torba Go Premium Scooter and Wheelchair Bag by Able 2

“The Torba Go Premium Scooter and Wheelchair Bag is a thoughtfully designed bag helping to enhance independence and everyday convenience for users of wheelchairs and mobility scooters. It combines durability with smart design, and offers a practical way to carry personal belongings securely while on the move.

“Made from high-quality, waterresistant rip-stop material, the Torba Go Premium protects belongings in all conditions and comes in a range of different colour options.

“A universal fitting system allows the bag to easily attach to most scooters and wheelchairs, making it versatile for retailers.

“The bag focuses on usability. There are multiple compartments which

provide organised storage for essentials such as shopping, medication, and personal items such as mobiles, while easy-access zips and ergonomic design ensure users with limited dexterity can operate it comfortably. Reinforced handles and secure fastening systems further enhance reliability during travel.

“For trade buyers, the Torba Go Premium represents a strong addition to any mobility accessory range. It addresses a clear customer need - safe, convenient storage on the go - while offering quality and design that align

with premium product expectations.

“In a market increasingly focused on independence and lifestyle, which is flooded with cheap Chinese imports, this product delivers both practicality and confidence for end users.”

S Drive Powerstroll by Drive Medical

“The S Drive Powerstroll is a great solution for making everyday journeys easier and more comfortable, for both the user and the person assisting.

“This clever attachment turns a standard wheelchair into a powered one, allowing a carer to guide it with ease. It takes away the strain of pushing, especially on hills, uneven paths, or longer trips, so the user can enjoy getting out without the extra effort.

steady control along the way.

“The controls are easy to use, with a variable speed dial, thumb throttle, and key ignition, giving the carer smooth and

“It’s also designed with convenience in mind. The Powerstroll can be fitted or removed in seconds and is lightweight enough to take the user wherever they go, making transport and storage simple.

“Best of all, it fits most standard wheelchairs up to 50cm (20”) wide, making it a versatile and practical upgrade. The S Drive Powerstroll is all about making life a little easier, helping the user stay mobile with less effort and more enjoyment.”

S Drive Powerstroll by Drive Medical

“When it comes to power add-ons for manual wheelchairs, the S Drive Powerstroll from Drive Medical is our go-to option.

“Quite often we have customers looking for something that will make the attendants life easier when pushing a manual wheelchair. The S Drive Powerstroll takes the strain out of pushing a manual chair and makes it easier when climbing hills or ramps and uneven surfaces.

“This power add-on can be fitted to most manual wheelchairs up to a 20-inch seat width and can be added and removed easily in seconds with it’s unique one-click docking station. It

travels up to 4mph and can do a range of 7.8 miles approximately. It is simple to manoevre with a forward and reverse function on the controller.

“The Powerstroll takes a max user weight of 21 stone but there is also a heavy duty version available which takes up to 28 stone. As the battery is a 12Ah valve regulated sealed lead acid battery pack, it is airline friendly.

“There are height adapter brackets available making it 2” lower if the standard height bar isn’t suitable. It comes complete with a carry holdall with shoulder strap.

“This is the ideal solution if customers don’t want to go down the powerchair route and because it comes off the wheelchair, it makes it more manageable to get it in and out the car.”

JAY LowZone Pressure Cushion by Helping Hand

“At TPG we do sell a range of mobility devices, just as many retailers do, but if a client is to spend anything more than a few minutes in even the most basic manual wheelchair, they would benefit from a good quality pressure-reducing cushion.

“Even from the lower end of the cost range they can have an immense effect on the comfort and wellbeing of the chair user.

“It is important to know that tissue damage can start to occur within just a few minutes if the client is immobile and unable to regularly shift their weight. So for that reason we would offer a range of cushions that offer varying levels of pressure care and find the JAY LowZone range a really good place to start.

“At the bottom end (excuse the pun) a sub £30 cushion for a semi ambulant client, up to a sophisticated and technical pressure care cushion for the more demanding cases, costing several hundreds of pounds, should always be offered to your clients to ensure no harm is done by sitting for extended periods in a wheelchair.

“The LowZone cushions happily fill this requirement and are always of a consistent high quality.”

Gel Seat Cushion by Drive Medical

“The Drive Medical Gel Seat Cushion combines everyday comfort with practical versatility. Designed for use in both home and care environments, it provides an accessible and effective solution for enhancing user comfort and support.

“Suitable for 18-inch wheelchairs, the cushion is available in three depth options – 2, 3, and 4 inches – and supports a maximum user weight of up to 18 stone. Each cushion features a convenient carry handle, making it easy to transport between settings.

“The cover is designed with a water-resistant nylon top and a non-slip vinyl bottom , ensuring both stability and ease of maintenance. It can be quickly wiped clean, making it ideal for regular use in a variety of environments. Inside, the viscous gel core delivers consistent, high-quality support, helping to improve comfort during prolonged periods of sitting.

“Overall, this is a reliable, all-round gel cushion that balances comfort, durability, and practicality. With its combination of choice, convenience, and dependable performance, the Drive Medical Gel Seat Cushion is a strong addition to any mobility product range— delivering comfort users can feel and flexibility providers can rely on. It is also available in smart retail packaging, making it ideal for in-store display.”

ECO Travel LX by Rehasense

“The ECO Travel LX is a lightweight and highly practical power add-on designed to convert a manual wheelchair into a powered solution, giving users greater independence with minimal effort. It is particularly well suited to users who want to travel further without the strain of self-propelling, while still keeping their existing wheelchair.

“A key strength of the ECO Travel LX is its modular and portable design. It can be attached quickly without the need for permanent brackets, allowing it to be fitted to most rigid and folding wheelchairs in seconds. The foldable handlebar and compact structure make it easy to store or transport, and it is well suited to travel, including air travel, thanks

Coming back stronger

Still thriving after 25 years, nationwide mobility retailer Ableworld has achieved a strong financial turnaround as it continues to grow its network of franchises…

Mobility retailer Ableworld has been marking its 25th anniversary with a strong financial recovery, ongoing franchise expansion and continued investment across both its retail and stairlift operations.

The retailer delivered strong growth over the past 12 months, achieving a significant turnaround following a challenging period for the business. It’s a milestone which comes at a pivotal moment for the retailer, which has implemented a series of operational improvements and strategic investments to strengthen performance.

Difficult economic conditions in late 2024 led to an unexpected dip in turnover, placing pressure on trading during the early part of the financial year. Combined with rising operating costs, this resulted in a sizeable loss that was not recovered by year end. However, results in 2025/2026 have improved considerably, the retailer reports.

In the half year to the end of February 2026, like-for-like sales are up by more than six per cent. Alongside

enhancements to the product range and cost-efficiency initiatives, the business has achieved a turnaround of more than £700,000 to the bottom line in just six months of trading.

TRADING AHEAD

With March 2026 expected to deliver further gains, Ableworld is trading ahead of both last year and internal forecasts, putting it on track to for a healthy profit for the year.

As a privately owned business, Ableworld has retained a long-term, independent approach to investment, enabling it to respond quickly to market conditions while continuing to invest across the business.

Commenting on the turnaround, Ableworld founder and managing director Mike Williams said:

“The last 18 months have tested our business, as they have for many in the retail sector, but we’ve responded positively. We’ve focused on strengthening our product offer, tightening our cost base and investing

in the right areas of the business.

“Having successfully navigated previous challenges, including the 2008 financial crisis, the Covid-19 pandemic and more recent economic uncertainty, the business has consistently demonstrated its resilience. This puts us in a much stronger position as we move through our 25th year and, importantly, as a business we are better prepared for the future.”

A central element of Ableworld’s strategy has been the continued expansion of its own-brand

“A central element of Ableworld’s strategy has been the continued expansion of its own-brand offering”

offering, supported by a strong emphasis on UK manufacturing.

Working with a network of more than 40 suppliers, the business has significantly developed its own-label portfolio across key categories including riser recliner chairs, adjustable beds and rollators. Alongside this, a continued focus on UK-made products has resulted in a growing range that is proving increasingly popular with customers.

This approach not only strengthens supply chain resilience but also aligns with growing consumer demand for British-made products, while supporting the company’s sustainability ambitions.

DATA-LED APPROACH

Alongside product development, Ableworld has invested in strengthening its buying and merchandising capabilities, introducing a more structured, data-led approach to retail management.

Following the expansion of its buying team, the business is placing greater emphasis on key performance indicators such as sales per square foot, product placement effectiveness and competitive pricing. This also helps ensure product ranges remain current and competitive, with the introduction of a dementia category and the ongoing development of lighter-weight product solutions.

By leveraging retail systems from Scorpion Retail, Ableworld has improved sales tracking and forecasting accuracy, providing greater visibility across the business.

With many stores carrying more than 1,400 product lines, maintaining the right product mix is essential. The improved approach enables stores to prioritise fast-moving lines, reduce excess inventory and minimise clearance

activity, helping to protect margins.

Improved forecasting has also strengthened supplier relationships, enabling better production planning, more competitive pricing and increased efficiency across the supply chain.

STAIRLIFT DIVISION DELIVERS GROWTH

The Ableworld stairlift division continues to be a major driver of growth and represents a significant and increasing proportion of the company’s overall turnover.

The division is supported by a nationwide network of more than 45 stairlift engineers covering over 42 territories across the UK, enabling the business to deliver a responsive and localised service.

Recent supplier partnerships have further strengthened the division,

expanding the product range and providing customers with increased choice at highly competitive prices.

Mike Williams commented: “Our stairlift division has always been a key part of the business. The strength of our engineering network, combined with strong supplier relationships and a clear focus on service and value, has allowed us to build a trusted and scalable operation.”

Ongoing investment in training ensures engineers are fully equipped to install, service and maintain all products, reinforcing Ableworld’s longstanding commitment to value and customer care.

FRANCHISE NETWORK CONTINUES TO EVOLVE

Ableworld’s franchise network has also seen a number of significant developments, reflecting both its maturity and ongoing growth potential.

The strength of the model has been recognised at the Elite 100 UK Franchise Awards, where Ableworld has now been featured for the third consecutive year, achieving its highestever placing. The business was also named among the top five brands for overall improvement, highlighting ongoing progress across the network.

In Paisley, long-standing franchisees Stuart and Jacky have sold their business after 13 years, achieving their

full asking price. The store has been acquired by new franchisees Shafiq and Atta, who are looking to build on the existing operation while exploring further opportunities within Scotland.

Elsewhere, Ableworld has confirmed a new franchise opening soon in Edinburgh, with franchise owner Chris Thomson currently completing training ahead of the launch at Fort Kinnaird Retail Park.

In Colchester, franchisee Gerald Roper has relocated to larger premises after more than a decade in business, doubling the store’s retail space and enhancing the in-store experience. Together, these developments underline the continued appeal of the Ableworld franchise model and highlight opportunities for both new and existing operators within the network.

COMMITTED TO INVESTMENT

Like many businesses in the retail sector, Ableworld continues to operate in a challenging economic environment, with rising costs across wages, National Insurance, fuel and materials.

Despite these pressures, the company remains firmly committed to investment.

Recent initiatives include upgrades to the till system, enhancements to CRM platforms and the integration of artificial intelligence to support operational efficiency.

Ableworld has also strengthened its marketing approach, partnering with a leading digital media agency to enhance its presence across online channels.

In addition, the business is trialling a national radio campaign to support both its retail and stairlift divisions, aimed at increasing brand awareness and generating new leads, while maintaining a strong localised marketing presence.

CELEBRATING WITH CUSTOMERS

As part of its 25th anniversary celebrations, Ableworld is set to roll out a series of in-store initiatives over the coming months, aimed at rewarding customers and driving engagement across its retail network. These will include a range of promotional offers, prize draws and seasonal campaigns,

alongside in-store activity designed to mark the milestone and thank customers for their continued loyalty.

With 42 stores across the UK, averaging more than 3,000 square feet and offering up to 1,400 product lines, Ableworld remains the largest mobility retailer in the country.

Supported by a growing stairlift division, continued product innovation and a workforce of nearly 300 employees, the business is focused on building on its recent recovery and driving further growth.

Mike Williams concludes: “Reaching 25 years in business is a proud moment for everyone at Ableworld. It reflects the hard work of our teams, the strength of our franchise network and the trust our customers place in us.

“With growth comes change, which can be both challenging and exciting, but we cannot grow without our people. I’d like to thank our dedicated staff, our franchisees and business partners across the wider network, and of course our loyal customers for their continued support over the past 25 years.

“We are sorry to see Stuart and Jacky leave Ableworld, but are pleased they have achieved their goal of selling their franchise after years of hard work and dedication, backed by consistent profits. Everyone at Ableworld wishes them well for the future.

“We’ve come through a challenging period, but we’re in a much stronger position now and remain focused on continuing to grow and improve the business in the years ahead.”

Inclusive by design

Specialist healthcare solutions provider Younique Healthcare is proud to be a business centred around people, with a focus on assessment-led equipment provision and ongoing support…

Established in 2019 and fully operational in 2022, West Midlandsbased Younique Healthcare is led by directors Andy Haines and Lee Cadman, who bring complementary strengths and a shared focus on delivering tailored solutions that offer realworld usability for customers. Its services cover wheelchairs and specialist seating, moving and handling equipment, access solutions (including modular ramps and threshold options),

as well as LOLER (Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations) and PUWER (Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations) inspections and certification.

Andy explains that the trigger to establishing the business was a shift in personal and professional direction that had been developing for several years. Andy says: “The aim was to build a business based on proper assessment and long-term outcomes, not just equipment supply, and to create a

socially responsible company around that. We’ve grown steadily since launch and continue to build on that approach.”

BRINGING ENGINEERING EXPERTISE

While Lee brings a operations-led, delivery-focused approach, with a hands-on emphasis on personalised assessments and follow-through, Andy is a healthcare mobility specialist whose experience combines

Lightweight and foldable wheelchairs for customers to sample

commercial leadership with practical and clinical problem-solving.

A trained electronics, fabrication and mechanical engineer who started out in the aeronautics industry Andy says that a practical mindset has always been central to his work. This perspective helps underpin a key principle in mobility provision – “making the machine work for the human”.

His career spans manufacturing, engineering, NHS wheelchair services, DFG provision, and later sales and business development within the health and mobility sector. This breadth of experience, he says, allows the business to bridge the gap between standard product provision and real-world usability.

Andy adds: "I've worked across most areas that support someone's independence – from assessment through to installation and long-term use. That joined-up understanding is important when you're dealing with complex needs."

MOBILITY SHOWROOM

Younique Mobility is the dedicated retail and mobility equipment arm of Younique Healthcare and is based near Halesowen in the West Midlands.

Andy explains: “The showroom is set up as a working environment for assessments, equipment trials, and more complex cases, rather than a traditional retail environment."

The facility includes an audiology clinic, a full stairlift demonstration installation, bathing and seating trial areas, and a workshop – allowing for a wide range of practical evaluations.

While there are plans to expand where appropriate, the business continues to operate a UK-wide mobile service, supporting clients in both home and care environments.

Andy adds: “Our model requires spaces that can support wheeled assessments, hoisting, and full seating trials while still being welcoming. Finding suitable premises that meet those requirements alongside accessibility and commercial realities has been a challenge."

For now, the focus remains on capability and coverage rather than rapid expansion.

"The limiting factor is not demand," continues Andy, "it's finding the right people. Skilled professionals

Younique Mobility works with a number of leading suppliers, including Sunrise Medical, Care & Independence, Posi. Care, Accora, Dietz, Permobil, Snooza and Hugga, among others.

Strong supplier partnerships are essential, particularly where collaboration and technical input are

required to achieve the right outcome.

At the same time, the business remains focused on maintaining independence in product selection, ensuring solutions are driven by assessment rather than brand.

With an ‘inclusive by design’ ethos, Younique Healthcare focuses on balancing independence, safety and value, while avoiding a one-size-fits-all approach. Its assessment-led pathway

“Standard products don't always solve ‘real world problems”

considers the individual’s environment, clinical needs, care provision, skin integrity and safety, before moving through specification, installation, commissioning and ongoing support.

Demand is particularly strong in specialist seating, pressure care, tilt-in-space systems and modular ramp solutions.

Where standard products do not fully meet user needs, the company can develop bespoke adaptations through its workshop, including the use of 3D printing technologies.

Andy says: “Standard products don’t always solve real-world problems. Having the ability to adapt and refine solutions makes a significant difference.”

The business is also planning to introduce its own product developments over time, focusing on practical improvements in seating, posture and positioning.

SUPPORT AND COLLABORATION

Working with charities remains an important part of Younique Healthcare’s approach.

Andy explains: “Charities can play a key role in supporting outcomes where funding is limited, and we work alongside them where appropriate. We’ve worked with many of the major organisations, with Variety being one of the more recent.”

Like many in the sector, the

business operates within longer sales cycles and ongoing economic pressures, but remains focused on steady, sustainable growth.

This includes strengthening relationships with occupational therapists, physiotherapists and case managers, alongside continued development of its digital presence.

Andy adds: “At some point we will look at strategic investment, but the real requirement is at board level — bringing in the right skills to support

growth rather than simply funding it.”

Younique Healthcare remains focused on continuing to support customers through servicing, compliance checks and ongoing maintenance across home and community care environments.

Andy concludes: “Understanding how equipment works in practice allows us to deliver better, longerlasting outcomes for clients.”

2026 marks a significant year for product development at Motion Healthcare, with several key launches designed to strengthen and diversify its range…

Motion Healthcare has enjoyed rapid growth since it first entered the market in 2016, fuelled by a strategic focus on bringing new products into the market and working with an exclusive selection of partners. Based in Rayne, north west Essex, the firm has been busy launching a raft of new products into the market this year. Tim Mills, Managing Director at Motion Healthcare, tells us more…

categories and interact with the range in a more natural, hands-on way.

“We showcased a broad crosssection of our mobility offering, with a strong focus on scooters, powerchairs and furniture. This included both established bestsellers and new product launches, giving visitors a clear view of how the range is evolving.

MOTION HEALTHCARE EXHIBITED AT NAIDEX RECENTLY. CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR STAND AND THE PRODUCTS YOU SHOWCASED TO VISITORS?

“Motion Healthcare returned to Naidex with a completely refreshed stand concept, designed to better reflect the direction of the brand and accommodate an expanding product range. The new stand layout prioritised space and accessibility, allowing visitors to move freely between product

“The response was extremely positive. The increased space allowed for more meaningful conversations with both existing partners and new enquiries, while the new product launches generated strong interest, particularly from retailers looking to expand their offerings.”

WILL MOTION HEALTHCARE BE EXHIBITING AT ANY OTHER EVENTS THIS YEAR?

“Motion Healthcare has a strong events calendar planned for the year ahead, continuing its commitment to engaging with both retailers and end users.

“Confirmed events for us this year

far easier than traditional road scooters. The Xcelerate is built from the ground up with a lightweight yet exceptionally strong aluminium chassis, delivering durability without the bulk.

“The heaviest part weighs just 19.9kg, an impressive feat for a road-going scooter, making transport and storage far more manageable. Combined with a generous range of up to 25 miles, the Xcelerate offers both practicality and performance in equal measure. Integrated carry handles built into the chassis further enhance usability. The Xcelerate is available in two premium finishes, Marine Blue and Champagne.

“In the powerchair category, the new Electron range represents our lightest powerchair to date. Designed with portability and convenience in mind, it is compact, easy to handle, and comes with an attendant controller and travel bag as standard. With its strong magnesium frame, the Electron comes in at just 11.7kg carry weight, perfect for easy transportation. Dual batteries extend the range up to 20 miles and it is available in blue and red.

“All of these new products are also available on the Motability Scheme.”

HOW SHOULD RETAILERS GET IN TOUCH IF THEY WISH TO FIND OUT MORE?

“Retailers interested in learning more about the range can contact the Motion Healthcare team directly via email at enquiries@motionhealthcare.co.uk, where a member of the office team will be able to assist.

“Alternatively, the full product range can be explored online at motionhealthcare.co.uk, providing detailed specifications and product information.”

IN

TERMS OF THE PRODUCTS YOU ALREADY HAVE OUT ON THE MARKET, ARE THERE ANY INTERESTING UPDATES HAPPENING TO

OTHER PRODUCTS?

“Alongside new launches, Motion Healthcare continues to refine and improve its existing range.

“The Alumina scooter has received a notable update, including the introduction of a new Burnt Orange colour option alongside the customer favourite Charcoal, adding a more distinctive and modern aesthetic. In addition, the steering lock and tiller adjustment mechanism have both been redesigned to improve ease of use and overall durability, reflecting ongoing feedback from both retailers and end users, with further refinements to the ride enhancing overall stability and user confidence.”

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT MOTION HEALTHCARE’S NEW RISE & RECLINE FURNITURE RANGE?

“As part of an exclusive release, Motion Healthcare has introduced two new additions to its furniture range: the Calgary and the Calgary Wall Hugger.

“Both models are dual-motor rise and recline chairs, upholstered in a ‘chocolate’ colourway, and are designed to broaden the accessibility of the range. The Wall Hugger variant is particularly suited to environments where space is limited, offering full functionality while requiring minimal clearance from the wall.

“These additions strengthen the dual-motor category within the range, helping to create a more balanced and comprehensive offering for retailers.”

“Motion Healthcare recently launched a completely redesigned trade portal”

WHAT TRENDS HAS MOTION HEALTHCARE NOTICED IN TERMS OF WHAT CONSUMERS ARE LOOKING FOR?

“In the current economic climate, affordability has become a key consideration for many consumers. There is a growing demand for products that deliver comfort and functionality without moving into premium price brackets.

“Motion Healthcare has responded to this by expanding its dual-motor range, introducing models like the Calgary, Sanford and Alberta to provide more budget-conscious options. This allows retailers to better cater to a wider audience, offering solutions that balance quality, functionality and price.

“In addition to this, Motion has seen significant success with its ‘essentials’ range. The range is aimed at providing budget-friendly solutions in multiple product categories – travel, folding, pavement and road-going scooters.

“With the most recent launches being the eLite and eFly, two ‘essentials’ travel scooters offering the options of either a lightweight aluminium or stronger, higher weight capacity steel chassis respectively with both sporting a lithium battery, despite remaining at the budget price point.”

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT ANY NEW DIGITAL DEVELOPMENTS?

“Motion Healthcare recently launched a completely redesigned trade portal, known as the ‘Partner Area’.

“This updated platform has been built to streamline the day-to-day experience for our customers. Key features include live stock visibility with automated availability and due dates, one-click warranty registration, and the ability to place orders directly online.

“The new system is designed to save time, improve transparency, and give Motion Partners greater control and efficiency when managing their business.”

HOW ELSE HAS MOTION HEALTHCARE BEEN SUPPORTING ITS RETAILER NETWORK?

“In line with its expanding and increasingly refined product range, Motion Healthcare has placed a strong focus on enhancing sales and marketing support for its partner network. As part of the benefits of being a Motion partner, retailers have access to a growing suite of marketing resources and hands-on support designed to help promote products more effectively and drive in-store engagement.

“A key introduction is ‘Product Spotlights’, which are product-specific brochures created to simplify the sales process in addition to the ever-

growing entire Motion range product brochure. Rather than relying on a full range brochure, partners can present targeted information based on a customer’s specific needs or interests, whether that’s a particular model or a defined product category.

“This more focused approach not only saves time but also helps create clearer, more relevant conversations, ultimately making the sales journey more streamlined and effective for both retailer and customer.”

HAVE THERE BEEN ANY PERSONNEL CHANGES AT MOTION HEALTHCARE YOU CAN SHARE WITH US?

“Motion Healthcare has recently strengthened its internal support structure with the introduction of a new partner support coordinator role.

Matt Crissell, previously warranty coordinator, has transitioned into this position to provide dedicated support to the wider Motion Partner network.

“Acting as a central point of contact within the office team, he is on hand to assist with a broad range of partner requirements, working closely with the business development manager’s team to help ensure day-to-day operations run smoothly and efficiently.

“Following this move, Lorna Wenman has joined the team as warranty coordinator. Partners can expect the same high standards and consistency from the warranty team, with a continued focus on delivering the level of service and reliability the network has come to rely on.” www.motionhealthcare.co.uk

Am I safe to combine these products?

The off-the-shelf solution may not be ideal, so what do you need to consider when combining additional products to create a better outcome for your client?

Clients in need of assistive products for improved health, well-being, or safety, frequently have needs that are only partly satisfied by an off-the-shelf base product. To meet these needs appropriately many businesses have been established to produce accessories to broaden the applicability of, and enhance, these base products for more complex client groups: they have developed specialist add-on products designed to enhance the off-the-shelf products. Prescribers need to assess the risks versus the benefits of these accessories for their clients’ well-being.

The fact that we have a choice of solutions is potentially good news for our clients. The challenge is for prescribers to know what options there are, and then work through the detail to see which accessory might add the most value for their client.

The proliferation of increasingly sophisticated alternative accessories adds to the challenges. Some products solve previously unanswered needs, while others are copies of other products that just offer the same

benefits at a lower cost. The key primary considerations are whether the products benefit the client and that they are safe.

MOUNTING ACCESSORIES ONTO WHEELCHAIRS

Going back some years, I remember the days when engineers drilled holes into wheelchair frames to be able to mount positioning belts in appropriate positions for the occupant. This ceased when the chair manufacturers pointed out that this might have an adverse affect on the strength of the frame, and this activity voided the chair’s warranty.

To meet the need of mounting the belts in the correct position for the occupant’s postural needs (see ISO/ TS 16840-151) manufacturers have developed a selection of frame clamps for mounting around the wheelchair frame tubing without affecting the integrity of the tubing (for a couple of examples see Figure 1; further examples are listed in Annex D of ISO/TS 16840151).

Attaching head support mounts onto a back support can be a challenge. Some manufacturers provide some

• Available in black, silver and copper

holes through which their mount can be bolted, while Symmetric Designs offers a Universal Headrest Mounting Plate (Figure 2) to match up with a wider variety of these options. Some manufacturers, such as Varilite with

Figure 1. FrameSaverTM and band clamps

their Icon back support (Figure 3), give the prescriber carte blanche to drill holes wherever they may be needed. Of course, not all back supports are solid, and the solution here might be the Symmetric Designs Clinical Headrest Mounting Adapter (Figure 4) to attach to the frame uprights supporting the canvas back support.

For seat cushions, there’s now a

recommended standardised placement of hook and loop strips on the cushion and on the chair for secure placement of after-market cushions on the wheelchair seat base (Figure 5).

SAFETY STANDARDS

When selecting a wheelchair or accessories, there’s a range of European and International standards to which these products are tested. The European standards are BS EN 121832 for manual chairs and BS EN 121843 for powered chairs, and these in turn call up the international standards where relevant.

For wheelchair seating accessories we have ISO 16840-104 for flammability testing, and ISO 16840-35 for testing of static, impact, and repetitive load strengths for postural support devices (PSDs) with their associated attachment hardware.

Whether the belts and harnesses, or any other accessories that you use, are supplied by the wheelchair manufacturer or obtained from an aftermarket manufacturer, you should ensure that they have been tested to, and passed, the relevant safety standards

such as these listed.

MYTHS

It would be great if every wheelchair accessory could be tested with every wheelchair frame, and a Combination Agreement provided for every permutation.

In the real world this is neither feasible nor affordable. Some wheelchair manufacturers have been insisting that if there is not a Combination Agreement in place (referencing the recent European MDR replacement6 for the MDD) the aftermarket product should not be used.

This practice should be discouraged because it is not correct: it is anticompetitive, and worst of all, cuts out potential choices for providing for the best clinical outcome. If a wheelchair manufacturer tries to limit your choice in this way, moving to a different supplier may be your best bet!

For reference: all that the MDR states on the matter is in Clause 14.1: “If the device is intended for use in combination with other devices or equipment the whole combination,

Figure 2. Symmetric Designs Universal Headrest Mounting Plate
Figure 3. Varilite Icon Back support
Figure 4. Clinical Headrest Mounting Adapter
Figure 5. Positioning of Hook and Loop to attach wheelchair cushions

including the connection system shall be safe and shall not impair the specified performance of the devices. Any restrictions on use applying to such combinations shall be indicated on the label and/or in the instructions for use.”

Since in most cases we are talking about medical devices (otherwise the MDR does not apply), each product will have its own technical file in which the manufacturer will have recorded their product description and claims, their risk assessments (which will include where and where not their product can be used), and the safety testing that their product has undergone.

Any restrictions will be indicated in the instructions for use: those restrictions will have been spelled out specifically by the manufacturer of each product. The BHTA has produced for its members a guidance document on this topic, following legal advice7

MODULAR PRODUCTS

A ‘grey’ area lies around modular devices. To resolve this (covering both modular devices and after-market accessories), the EU Medical Device Coordination Group published a guidance document that defines subtypes of medical devices8.

One of these is “adaptable medical devices” and states: Note 1: Adaptable medical devices (products which fall under (a) above) are mass-produced medical devices which must be adapted, adjusted, assembled, or shaped at the point of care, traditionally by a healthcare professional, in accordance with the manufacturer’s validated instructions to suit an individual patient’s specific anatomophysiologic features prior to use.

Examples of mass-produced adaptable medical devices may include: certain spectacle frames and optical glasses (assembled together to form spectacles) patient fitted wheelchairs hearing aids (otoplastic & amplifier) orthotic braces exo-prosthetics.

A manufacturer has to wade through the distinctions between what is a Medical Device, what is an Accessory to a Medical Device (which is, confusingly, also a medical device), and what are other parts. For example:

1. A wheelchair is a medical device - it can be used by itself.

2. A pelvic positioning belt or arm support is an accessory to a medical device - it isn’t designed to be used by itself, but attached to a wheelchair. It is a Medical Device, too, and goes on the manufacturer’s Declaration of Conformity (DoC).

3. A mounting clamp or quick-release connector is an accessory to a positioning belt or arm support, but since the MDR doesn’t recognize accessories to “accessories to medical devices”, this category is called something else, such as “mounting hardware”. It will be described in a technical file, but left off the DoC.

It ends up being up to the manufacturer to decide where to draw the line between Accessories to Medical Devices (which are, themselves, medical devices) and other components which will be described in their literature, but which are not strictly essential for the clinical performance of the device.

CRASH-WORTHINESS

Because it was not realistic to crash test every seating system with every wheelchair, a crash test was developed to create a surrogate wheelchair on which complete seating systems could be tested (ISO 16840-49).

To date there is not yet a crash test for parts of a seating system, such as a back or head support (though this is being worked on by the ISO standards Working Groups at present). So if someone claims that an accessory has been crash tested, it would be interesting to establish what test they used!

The tests in ISO 16840-3 are designed for low impact loading on postural support devices, and not the higher deceleration forces experienced in a vehicle coming to a sudden stop.

An occupant in a wheelchair in a vehicle still needs their positioning devices to be doing their positioning job and to stand up to the forces of normal use and standard driving forces. At this point it is the risk assessment which needs to be created for each case that will indicate the suitability of the required accessory for that individual under their personal circumstances.

CONCLUSION

Combining products to give the best result for a client’s health, well-being, and safety, is best practice. Under the principles of 'Do No Harm and Know Your Power', it is up to the prescriber to carry out the appropriate risk assessment, and insist on selected product combinations that best meet their client’s needs.

The remainder

of 2026

is set to be a busy one for Triride, with a strong focus on visibility, growth and closer engagement with dealers and end users. Nathan Milgate, General Manager at Triride UK, tells us more…

CAN YOU DESCRIBE A COUPLE OF THE LATEST RELEASES TO COME OUT FROM TRIRIDE?

“Recently, we have introduced a number of important upgrades across selected products in our range, with a strong focus on enhancing real world performance for everyday users. One of the most significant developments has been the integration of new, higher torque motors. These have been specifically introduced, as more users are looking to push the boundaries of where their devices can take them – whether that’s exploring more challenging terrain or simply enjoying greater confidence outdoors.

“The increased torque delivers clear, benefits. Users experience improved pulling power and smoother performance, particularly on steeper inclines and uneven surfaces, even when travelling at walking pace. This makes everyday journeys easier and more predictable, reducing the physical effort required and allowing users to stay comfortably in step with family and friends. As a result, social outings and outdoor activities become more accessible and enjoyable.

“These higher torque motors have also been incorporated into our MTW Trekking

Power product, Triride’s unique three wheel drive system. This innovative setup provides unrivalled outdoor capability for manual wheelchair users, offering exceptional traction, stability and control across a wide range of conditions.

“Whether tackling hills, gravel paths or off road environments, the MTW Trekking Power provides an unrivalled drive performance for the end user whilst keeping the footprint and transport weights of a manual wheelchair.

“Together, these latest updates underline Triride’s ongoing commitment to innovation, performance and helping users go further, with confidence and independence.”

WHAT HAS BEEN THE RESPONSE BEEN LIKE ABOUT THESE FROM CUSTOMERS SO FAR?

“The response from customers has been extremely positive. Many users have immediately noticed the difference in performance, particularly when tackling hills, ramps and uneven terrain. The addition of higher torque motors has given users greater confidence in their equipment and reassurance that it will perform in more demanding situations.”

WHAT

HAS ALWAYS BEEN THE BESTSELLING PRODUCT AT TRIRIDE, AND CAN YOU EXPLAIN WHY?

“The most popular product in our range at present is the Special Compact HT, particularly when specified with our all road tyre option. Its popularity comes down to its exceptional versatility – it’s a true all-round performer. Compact enough

to navigate everyday urban environments with ease, it also delivers the power and traction needed to confidently handle off road routes and steeper terrain.

“Another key factor is its practicality. With a transport weight of just 11kg, the Special Compact HT remains manageable for the majority of users, making it easy to fit into daily routines such as loading into a vehicle or storing at home.

“Alongside this, we’ve seen growing interest in our 10-inch wheel option, which has been specifically designed for urban use. When fitted to the wheelchair, it is the most compact model in our range, making it an ideal choice for users who prioritise manoeuvrability in tighter spaces such as town centres, shops and public transport environments.”

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE CURRENT UK REGULATIONS REGARDING PUBLIC USE OF POWER ADD-ON DEVICES?

“The current UK regulations governing the public use of power add-on devices – and powered mobility equipment more broadly – are increasingly outdated and no longer fit for purpose. The technology has evolved significantly,

Nathan Milgate, General Manager at Triride UK
MTW Trekking Power, Triride's unique three-wheel drive system
“Power add on devices are one of the most significant innovations to emerge in the mobility sector”

and power add-on devices are now an integral part of many users’ daily lives, yet the existing legislative framework has not kept pace with how these products are actually used in real world environments.

“We are encouraged that the Department for Transport is currently undertaking a consultation on this topic. This presents a valuable opportunity to gather meaningful feedback from end users, manufacturers, retailers and other stakeholders, all of whom bring important perspectives. We hope this process will support the development of more relevant and forward thinking legislation that better reflects the needs of today’s mobility device users.

“At present, the lack of clear provision for power add-on devices creates uncertainty. These solutions deliver substantial benefits in terms of independence, accessibility and quality of life, but the current regulations do not adequately recognise their role or how widely they are used. As a result, there is a need for clearer classification and guidance that is easy to understand and consistently applied.

“Ultimately, what is required is inclusion within a modernised regulatory framework. Power add-on devices are here to stay, and their positive impact is well established. Clear, updated legislation would provide confidence and clarity for end users and retailers alike – particularly around where these devices can be used and how they are classified – ensuring safe, inclusive and informed use across public spaces.”

HOW DO YOU THINK TECHNOLOGY HAS EVOLVED IN POWER ADD-ON DEVICES?

“Power add-on devices are arguably one of the most significant innovations to emerge in the mobility sector over the past five to 10 years. Their rapid adoption is clear across the industry,

from well-established manufacturers such as Triride through to newer and emerging brands that now include power add-ons as a core part of their product portfolios. This shift reflects how effectively these devices address real user needs, offering greater independence, flexibility and access to environments that were previously more challenging.

“Advances in technology have played a central role in this evolution. Improvements in motor efficiency, battery capacity and durability have enabled lighter, more powerful and more reliable devices, while increasingly sophisticated drive systems now support a broader range of users, including those with more complex requirements. As a result, modern power add-on devices are not only more capable, but also more refined in how they deliver performance in everyday use.

“At Triride, staying ahead of the curve means placing innovation at the heart of everything we do. We continually develop and refine our products to deliver meaningful, functional benefits for end users, whether through advances in hardware or through software and firmware enhancements. Importantly, our approach is highly collaborative.

“We work closely with a large and diverse user community to understand their needs, priorities and expectations, and we actively listen to feedback during the testing and development of new solutions. This user-led approach is fundamental to delivering products that perform well not only on paper, but in real world conditions.

“We are also committed to longevity and sustainability. Where possible, we design new developments so they can be retrofitted or upgraded for existing users. This is extremely important to us, as we recognise that customers are making a long term investment in their mobility equipment and expect it to evolve with them over time.

“Looking ahead, we follow a clear and structured development path that balances strong engineering expertise with direct user involvement at every stage. By ensuring that innovation is guided not just by what is technically possible, but by what users genuinely need and want, we’re able to deliver products that are both well engineered and warmly welcomed – helping us continue to lead in a fast moving and increasingly important sector.”

WHAT IS THE REST OF 2026 LOOKING LIKE FOR TRIRIDE?

“The remainder of 2026 is set to be a busy and exciting period for Triride, with a strong focus on visibility, growth and closer engagement with both dealers and end users.

“The year has already started on a high note, with the exhibition season kicking off at Naidex at the NEC, and we’ll be maintaining that momentum with a presence at major events across Europe. These exhibitions remain an important opportunity for us to showcase the latest updates across our range, as well as introduce new product developments that will be launching towards the end of the year.

“Face-to-face events continue to play a vital role in allowing people to experience our technology first hand and engage directly with the Triride team.

“Alongside this, 2026 will see continued growth of our UK team as we respond to increasing demand from our reseller network. Providing exceptional dealer support is a key priority for us, whether that’s through sales expertise, technical assistance or efficient administrative support. Investing in people ensures we can maintain high service standards while supporting our partners effectively as the market continues to grow.

“We will also be supporting our dealers through planned open days throughout the year. These events give end users the chance to test products in real world environments, which is essential for fully understanding the benefits that power add on devices can offer.

“Being able to try a product outside of a showroom setting often makes a real difference in helping users find the right solution for their needs.”
