Advancing in Scotland Two award-winning mobility retailers in the north of Scotland have been acquired by Advanced Healthcare Group. Able Care and City Mobility have over 50 years of combined heritage in the mobility equipment sector. Able Care, a specialist mobility and daily living aids retailer with showrooms in Inverness and Aberdeen, was recognized as the UK’s ‘Accredited Distributor of the Year’ for Stannah Stairlifts in 2024. Inverness-based City Mobility,
meanwhile, has a reach of customers covering just over half of Scotland and was awarded ‘Best Retailer in Scotland’ at the Scotland Business Awards in 2023. The purchase gives Advanced Healthcare Group an even stronger presence in Scotland having also acquired Dundee-based Allardyce Healthcare last year. Both businesses will continue to operate as they are with the same staff and management teams.
Going straight Lifting the load Enableliving has unveiled a gamechanging electric transfer chair lift to support people who are prone to falling. With a maximum safe working load of 158kg the electric VOCIC AX35 Pro lift has been designed with both the user and care giver in mind. It is ideal for domestic use, as it is lightweight, and can be quickly and easily set up and moved between rooms. The Lincolnshire-based assistive technology specialist has partnered exclusively with Canadian company Eugeria to supply the Idem Digital Dementia Clock to health and social care providers. The clock enables family, friends and professional caregivers to transmit updates, messages, and reminders directly to the clock face by connecting to a dedicated app. The clock can also offer reassuring messages, prescription reminders, and calendar notifications to help users stay focused throughout the day. Ravencourt says that the collaboration highlights the growing demand for useful and practical technologies that can support individuals’ independence at home. Supporting people with MND Mobility Scotland recently invited the support team from MND Scotland, a charity which campaigns for motor neuron disease research, to its premises near Glasgow for an information sharing session. Mobility Scotland works closely with the team at MND Scotland, as well as motor neuron disease nurses, and the MND community to provide information, services, and installations of home access and mobility solutions. The visit enabled staff at MND Scotland to learn more about the services Mobility Scotland offers, and discuss the needs of the people that it supports. The organisations also discussed how they could best work together to continue supporting people living with motor neuron disease.
in brief... SCOTTISH HEALTH APP MyCare.scot is a new online app which is being rolled out across Scotland. The app has been designed to help people access their health and social care information in one secure place. Similar to the NHS app, users are able to check and update personal details, view and book appointments, receive digital letters, check test results and access a directory of health and care services. The app is part of the national Digital Front Door (DFD) programme, led by NHS Education for Scotland in partnership with the Scottish Government. AIRPORT ACCESS BOOST Powered mobility provider WHILL has launched its Autonomous Mobility Service at Heathrow Airport. Now operating in 26 airports and facilities worldwide, the service has already been transforming airport accessibility as it helps passengers with reduced mobility navigate terminals and reach their gates with greater independence and confidence. The new trial service has launched at Heathrow Airport Terminal 3, marking a significant step forward for accessible air travel in the UK.
Practically perfect Mobility specialist eFOLDi has expanded its accessory range to help customers get even more from their eFOLDi product once they have made their purchase. Designed for everyday practicality, the new protective travel covers for the eFOLDi Lite, Compass, Explorer and Navigator offer customers added protection during storage and transport, while providing a straightforward accessory add-on for dealers. eFOLDi has also introduced SteadyTred wheels for the fourwheel eFOLDi Compass scooter. LITHIUM BATTERY ADVICE A free downloadable guide has been published by storage experts Asecos (www.asecos.com) to help healthcare organisations manage lithium battery risks and protect patient safety. Addressing the wide range of lithium battery usage in healthcare – such as medical equipment, mobility aids and cleaning robots – the guide explains their unique fire risks and provides practical advice on managing them safely. The need for guidance is increasing as UK fire brigades are now tackling at least three lithium-ion battery fires a day, according to business insurer QBE. DHCARE LAUNCHES DHCare, a global medical device company, has been formed from the merger of Invacare and DHG (Direct Healthcare Group) businesses across EMEA and APAC, following their acquisition by Rhône Group. DHCare states that its mission is to support efforts to ‘move health forward’ and will deliver innovative and leading solutions for individuals whose lives are impacted by reduced movement.
Carbon power Mobility equipment supplier Electric Mobility has launched a new carbon folding powerchair to help retailers meet the increasing demand for lightweight, 4mph travel-ready mobility solutions. The Rascal C60 Carbon combines advanced carbon construction with a practical design, supporting customers seeking high performance, portability and ease of use in a compact powerchair. Ideal for everyday use, the powerchair features all-around suspension and a high back seat with memory foam cushioning. Its lightweight yet durable frame ensures reliable performance while its folding design allows for easy storage. Rethinking the Folding Scooter Terence Clark, Director at RMA, explains why the TS30+ puts the user first. There’s a trend towards smaller, lighter folding scooters. Has something been lost along the way? Terence Clark: Lightweight and compact are important, but they shouldn’t be the only focus. At RMA, we felt that focusing solely on creating the smallest scooter can mean that comfort and stability start to take a back seat. How does the person using the scooter feel? Surely that’s what really matters. The TS30+ combines folding convenience without compromising on stability, security and safety. What practical features stand out for everyday users? Terence Clark: Everything just works together. You’ve got up to an 8 mile range, it’s comfortable to ride, folds away in seconds and is easy to store, it has a 19.5 stone weight limit, and it looks good. In addition, it has a high ground clearance, it’s been designed to be used regularly, not just occasionally.

How easy is the TS30+ to live with on a day-to-day basis? Terence Clark: Really easy. The seat folds forward, the tiller folds flat and the scooter stands upright on its end, so it hardly takes up any room. We even added a handle so you can pull it along like a suitcase. It’s the little details that make a big difference.
What do customers say about the driving experience? Terence Clark: The first thing most people notice is how solid it feels. We deliberately made it a little wider because that gives you much more confidence when you’re driving. The sprung seat also makes it much more comfortable, especially if you’re out for longer. At the same time, a clever chassis design means it has a tight turning circle making it easy to manoeuvre. What makes the TS30+ an easy scooter for dealers to sell? Terence Clark: The benefits are really easy for the customer to recognise and understand. The scooter feels solid, and secure when you are driving it. It’s attractive to look at, and stands up to fold out of the way. There’s no gimmick, just a welldesigned scooter that delivers.

Stairlift batteries are kept healthy by remaining on charge — leaving a lift parked away from its charge points, or isolating the power, is the most common cause of avoidable battery issues. Following those simple steps keeps the lift ready to use and extends battery life. “During a power cut, the batteries should allow the stairlift to continue operating for a limited number of journeys. However, users should avoid unnecessary journeys until the mains supply has been restored. “Batteries should only be inspected or replaced by a suitably trained engineer, using the correct approved specification. Where replacement is required, the batteries should normally be replaced as a matched set rather than individually. “Retailers should also ensure that old batteries are handled and disposed of through an appropriate recycling route. uCare has a battery warning system that can help proactively manage and can usually diagnose the reason for low battery alerts.”

Celebrating the showroom opening with Matt Hampson OBE
Candor Care recently opened its new showroom in Leicestershire with a goal to continue building a strong reputation for quality products and customer service… Candor Care recently opened a new purpose-built mobility showroom in Coalville, Leicestershire, which has been designed to offer a fully immersive, home-style environment for customers to see, try and understand essential equipment before making decisions. To mark the occasion Candor Care held a grand opening of the store for past and future customers, with Matt Hampson OBE and former England Under-21 rugby player, in attendance. Alan Ferguson, Managing Director of Candor Care, says that the new showroom has been around nine months in the making and is something that he and his staff are incredibly proud of. “From the outset, our vision wasn't
simply to create a showroom full of mobility equipment,” says Alan. “We wanted to create an environment where people could experience equipment in a relaxed, welcoming setting rather than choosing products from a brochure or catalogue. For many of our customers, purchasing mobility equipment can be an emotional decision, so it's important they feel comfortable and can take their time. “Our aim is to make the showroom a centre of excellence for accessibility and independent living across the Midlands.” The showroom offers a wide range of products, including straight and curved stairlifts, ceiling track hoists, a freestanding gantry H-frame, a modular ramp, a tilt-in-space shower chair and other daily living solutions.
The showroom also features realistic room settings so customers can better visualise how equipment would work in their own homes. It has also been designed as a training facility where occupational therapists, technical officers, housing associations and local authorities can see the latest equipment, attend product demonstrations and undertake training sessions. This is only the beginning of Alan’s plans for the showroom. He says: “We are looking to install more equipment in our accessible toilet later this year. “We'll be using the showroom to host supplier events, occupational therapist training days, CPD sessions, product launches and customer information events. We want it to become a hub for

The opening day of the showroom exceeded all expectations, with Alan’s team welcoming suppliers, customers, occupational therapists, local authority representatives and some longstanding friends of the business who have supported the business over the last 22 years. “Having Matt Hampson officially open the showroom made the day incredibly special. Matt's story of resilience, determination and positivity perfectly reflects everything we're trying to achieve at Candor Care,” says Alan. “What impressed me most wasn't his achievements, remarkable as they are, but his humility. When we approached Matt about opening the showroom, he declined any appearance fee and instead asked if we would help beneficiaries of the Matt Hampson Foundation. That immediately resonated with me.” As a result, Candor Care have already installed a modular access ramp free of charge for one Foundation beneficiary as well as installed a full room-covering
ceiling track hoist system for another family. The team are also supporting the expansion of the Get Busy Living Centre near Melton Mowbray by providing specialist hoist equipment. “For us, that perfectly demonstrates what partnership and community support should look like,” explains Alan. Supporting the local community has always been important at Candor Care, Alan states. As well as supporting the Matt Hampson Foundation the retailer regularly works with charities and local organisations to make a meaningful difference. “Ultimately, our business exists to improve people's quality of life, whether that's through commercial work or community projects,” he says. ACCESSIBILITY FIRST The showroom is based at Candor Care’s headquarters at 11 Phoenix Park in Coalville, which boasts excellent access from the M1, A42 and surrounding road networks. It occupies the ground floor of the building, which is around 750 square feet in size. An accessible toilet is available as well as ample free disabled parking directly outside for customers, many of whom have mobility needs. Being centrally located allows Candor Care to serve a broad range of customers throughout Leicestershire and the surrounding counties. Alan says. “Many of our customers are older people wishing to remain

“Ultimately, our business exists to improve people's quality of life, whether that's through commercial work or community projects” independent in their own homes, but we also support younger adults and children living with disabilities or lifechanging injuries. “Alongside private customers, we work extensively with local authorities, housing associations, occupational therapists, case managers and healthcare professionals. “Although we're based in Leicestershire, we regularly undertake installations across the East and West Midlands and continue to expand our geographical reach.” The business has come a long way since it was established in 2004 from Alan’s garage, when he focused primarily on stairlifts. Alan had previously started working in the industry back in 1995 after a mechanical design apprenticeship ended in redundancy. He continued: “A job came up working with a local supplier of mobility equipment and very quickly I realised how rewarding the industry was. “I then worked for manufacturers for the next seven years before I decided it

was time to go it alone. “From day one, my ambition wasn't simply to sell equipment but to build a business that genuinely cared for people, I wanted honesty, integrity and customer care to sit at the heart of everything we do.” Over the years Candor Care has grown considerably, expanding into ceiling track hoists, through-floor lifts, homelifts, modular ramps, changing places equipment, servicing and LOLER inspections, but its philosophy has never changed. Alan says: “Every product we install has the potential to transform someone's independence, and that's what motivates us every day.” KEY PEOPLE Sales manager, Sean Haberfield, has been instrumental in developing Candor Care’s relationships with occupational therapists, local authorities and suppliers. The retailer also employs two senior engineers in Mark Eckett and
Keith Dawson, who bring technical expertise to their roles, ensuring that every installation meets the highest standards. Carol West, Customer Services Manager, heads up the wider office team and works behind the scenes to ensure customers receive the service and support they deserve. Also integral to the business are Candor Care’s team of installation and service engineers who provide servicing, repairs, emergency breakdown cover and LOLER inspections. “Having our own directly employed engineers allows us to respond quickly and maintain the high standards of customer care that we're known for,” Alan says. Alan notes that there is also a growing demand for home lifts as more homeowners plan ahead and adapt their homes for future accessibility. Ceiling track hoists now represent a significant part of the business too, Alan says. “The ceiling track hoist market has seen substantial growth as the industry has placed greater focus on safe moving and handling. We have invested heavily in this area, as they not only reduce the risk of injury to carers but also provide a safer, more comfortable and dignified transfer for the people using them. We also offer a rental option for short term use which is very popular in some situations.” LOOKING TO THE FUTURE As demand for mobility equipment continues to grow, driven largely by an ageing population and the increasing desire for people to remain independent in their own homes, Alan says that one of the biggest challenges he sees isn't demand but attracting the next generation into the industry. “Mobility and accessibility can be an incredibly rewarding career, but it's perhaps not always seen as an attractive option for young people,” says Alan. “I believe we need greater government support for apprenticeships

and more investment in promoting the sector as a long-term career with real purpose and progression. As part of its continued growth, the business acquired a new 4,600 square foot warehouse in Syston, Leicestershire, which is supporting the expansion of its rental operation and its growing modular ramp recycling programme for local authority customers. Alan continues: “We're also focused on expanding our private customer offering, strengthening our relationships with local authorities, occupational therapists and other healthcare
professionals, and continuing to invest in our digital presence through our website and marketing.” Alongside this, Alan says that he hopes to continue to broaden Candor Care’s product portfolio to ensure that it is offering the very best mobility and accessibility solutions available. Welsh rise and recline seating manufacturer Primacare is planning to build on its product range and dealer network… Bespoke seating company Primacare engineers and manufactures its rise and recline chairs in Wales, where it produces a broad range of mechanisms, fabrics, features and accessories. Its chairs are designed with input from healthcare professionals to ensure that the end-user is comfortable in a chair that exactly fits their needs. THIIS caught up with David Tomlin, Managing Director at Primacare, to find out why the company continues to be top of its game… PRIMACARE WAS ESTABLISHED BACK IN 2004. HOW HAVE YOU
SEEN THE FIRM EVOLVE OVER THE YEARS IN TERMS OF ITS PRODUCTIVITY? “I was a main board director of a large group of upholstered furniture companies prior to 1998 when I went on my own and set up Prima Furniture. “In looking for new markets, the mobility industry was a perfect fit as there is no difference in making rise and recline furniture and the customers were approachable and paid their bills. It was 2004 when we rebranded as Primacare and by 2006 all our turnover was in the mobility industry. From there we went from strength to strength.

Best practice and sustainability Manufacturers and suppliers have to jump through sustainability hoops for the NHS, but is the NHS jumping through the same hoops within the NHS? Across Europe the provision of health support contributes to a major percentage of each country’s carbon footprint. The NHS some years ago set out part of its path towards net zero carbon by 2050 in its document: Sustainability & Social Value - Expectations of Suppliers, part of which is encapsulated in PCN 0061. When tendering to the NHS for provision of products and services, this has created a major burden on suppliers, and SMEs in particular. This approach appeared to leave all the heavylifting with suppliers, with little respective pressure on procurement departments to consider the full life cycle of the items they were procuring. This was highlighted in
the 2024 Design for Life Roadmap2, but what are the signs of actions being taken? At the June 2026 National Association of Equipment Providers (NAEP) conference the topic of sustainability practices was aired, with particular attention around what was being done and what could be improved upon in the community. The sums involved in the supply of community equipment are not insignificant: over £440 million was reportedly spent on community equipment services in 2021/22. The Design for Life Roadmap, as first set out, was very much targeted at NHS acute hospital settings, and appeared to be unaware of the amount that was already in process within the community through the nationwide Community

Equipment Services (CES) Loan Stores. At the NAEP conference, Josh Crosley, Design for Life Programme co-lead at the Department of Health and Social Care, described the programme. It is clear that the work is still heavily oriented towards the acute services, with the seven pilot studies (such as re-usable bronchoscopes) all hospital based. However, he did indicate that the programme was now ready to expand into the community. He requested volunteers from the NAEP audience, with their community experience, to come forward to help pioneer the community end of the Design for Life Roadmap aims. DECONTAMINATION For products to be reused, the control of the risk of cross-contamination needs to be addressed, and decontamination processes in place and appropriate. For medical devices, it is implicit in the MDD and explicit in the EU MDR that disinfectants and

disinfection equipment must in their own right be registered as Class IIa medical devices. This is itself is a relatively new concept and requirement within the community, but well-accepted in the acute sector. Within the Design for Life projects, Josh reported that there is an Infrastructure Working Group on Decontamination, co-chaired by the DHSC and IDSc. Their task is to answer the questions: What does infrastructure for reuse look like in the community? What is best practice? Their programme is outlined in Figure 1. When looking at the Research Plan in detail, it is still very heavily weighted around the acute sector, where the IDSc membership is strong. In the community, however, their work is already done for them in many ways! There is an infrastructure foundation in place with the 150+ CES loan stores across the country, and best practice guidelines such as the TSA TEC Quality Infection Prevention and Control guidance document and audit programme. Investment is needed to provide the funding to upgrade CES facilities and equipment to meet fully the audit standards, and to install the Class IIa disinfection devices, thus rendering this sector fully fit for purpose. REUSE Susan Davies (OT and Churchill Fellow) and Laura Knight (Masters OT student, University of Winchester) covered the topics ‘Sustainability is Everyone’s Business’ and ‘The Barriers and Enablers to Sustainable and Accessible Redistribution of Occupational Therapy Equipment in the Community’. Susanna’s main purpose of her Churchill Fellowship study3 was to investigate whether the UK could be better at reusing disability equipment in order to: Minimise waste Protect the environment Deliver cost savings Contribute to a net zero health service As part of her research, she looked at what happens in other countries, with special attention to the US (which sends equipment overseas) and San Salvador (which receives equipment

Laura had researched what happens in the UK. On enquiring about professional attitudes towards sustainability and reuse, she found that sustainability as a need was widely recognised but not consistently embedded. Participants did link sustainability to reducing waste, improving access, responsible use of public resources, reuse, and refurbishment. However, in real life practice, sustainability was balanced against immediate service pressures. Professional involvement was heavily part of the initial assessment and delivery processes, but not in the later stages of the circular economy. Laura’s study, when reviewing system-level factors shaping equipment return and redistribution, found that: Return of equipment was inconsistent and not routinely embedded There was inconsistent terminology This was covered by a ‘shared’ responsibility, but ownership was unclear There was limited involvement beyond provision There was a reliance on service users or families to initiate returns Practical constraints were: time, transport, and workload There was often a lack of centralised tracking and coordination.
being placed on tenderers with the attendant Carbon Reduction Plans, Evergreen Sustainable Supplier Assessments, and Net Zero Supplier Roadmaps, each of which is required to be updated each year. But there is still no substantive attention paid on the procurement front to the circular economy picture, including aspects such as the lifetime cost of a product, its usable life, nor its cost of disposal – either physically or to the environment. Taking community mattresses as an example. These are, in the main, Class I or IIa medical products and are stocked and issued by CES Loan Stores. BES Healthcare has carried out a couple of FOI (Freedom of Information) surveys in recent years to establish some data around the number of mattresses in circulation, and the number that are taken out of circulation each year. For those taken out of circulation: were they treated as clinical waste, and were they decontaminated (and how) before disposal? Probably not surprisingly, there was little consistency in responses. A number of responding trusts indicated that they had no data on replacement spend, disposal costs, etc. On the positive side, most respondents did have a decontamination protocol, but this was usually for the mattress covers only, and not for the mattress core foam or other material. Often the reason for disposal of a mattress is

due to soiling of the mattress core: it is well nigh impossible to clean and disinfect the core of a foam mattress, and therefore they get condemned. Since the mattresses are used as medical devices, they should therefore be orange-bagged and disposed of as clinical waste. From the extrapolated data obtained, it appears that around 44,000 mattresses are disposed of each year in the community. The information from one trust was that their contracted clinical waste disposal cost was around £55 a mattress – if all mattresses were incurring this cost, that would come to £2.42 million pounds being spent in the UK each year for disposal alone, without even factoring in the replacement costs. Sadly, best practice is not being followed in many sites. A good number of foam mattresses are being transported every day, often still contaminated, in skips (Figure 2) to landfill or for incineration, with the release of dangerous chemicals that’s incurred in the latter process. AN ALTERNATIVE There are alternatives to foam, alternatives that can be washed, disinfected, reused, and recycled at end of life. For example, consider the NEST mattress (Figure 3) where, unlike most PU foam products with a usable life of usually less than a year, the polymer core material can be washed and disinfected (chemically, or thermally up o to 134 C), and the mattress reused for up to 8 years. Once the NEST’s useful life has ended, its core can be shredded into small pieces that can be recycled back into the original core plastic – with no need for landfill or incineration. The NEST core material also has further benefits over foam in that it maintains its pressure care properties for much longer, there is better air circulation for microclimate management, enables users movement when on the mattress, and the mattresses are much lighter than foam,

giving manual handling benefits for staff and carers. Improving product provision through the design for life programme doesn’t necessarily mean compromise, it can actually enhance the proposition. CONCLUSION Procurement departments are still tasked with obtaining products at the lowest purchase price possible, while the tenderers have to meet government zero carbon and sustainability targets for their businesses. The same latter targets are not currently applied to procurement, and therefore the impact of the purchases on the circular economy is not being addressed. In the example described around mattress life and disposal, much could be saved financially by a small additional purchase cost that would be more than offset by the lesser replacement cost over time, with additional sustainability benefits. These savings can be extrapolated across many more of the medical and support devices that are reusable in the community. It is exciting to see the community now being brought into the Design for Life spotlight as it offers huge opportunities and experience.
