Public holidays Every country has its own public holidays. On those days (almost) everybody in the country has a day off, schools are closed and there are special events. Can you think of a public holiday in your country? Let’s look at some public holidays around the world.

Turkey In Turkey they celebrate Children’s Day on the 23rd of April. On this day everybody in Turkey has a day off. People sing the national anthem and there are folk dances. Children get all kinds of presents. It is a bit like Christmas in England.

Poland Christmas is the most important and popular holiday in Poland. On the 24th of December (Christmas Eve) the whole family sits down at the table together. Before supper, which consists of twelve different vegetarian dishes, they break traditional thin wafers, called oplatki, together.

Greece On the 28th of October, the people in Greece celebrate Ochi Day. Ochi means ‘no’ in Greek.

On Ochi Day, people remember and celebrate the day in 1940 when the Greek government said ‘No’ to the Italian government. Greece didn’t become part of Italy, so Italy declared war on Greece. That is how the Second World War started in Greece. Ochi Day is celebrated with school and military parades all over the country.
