President’s Welcome Along the banks of Bayou Lafourche in the northwestern part of Lafourche Parish you will find a gem, the city of Thibodaux. With a population of approximately 15,000 you are sure to meet a friendly neighbor around every corner.

With its own unique flavor and outstanding characteristics, it was recognized by Reader’s Digest in 2018 as the most charming city in Louisiana. You won’t find a better city than Thibodaux to work, play, and call home.

The Thibodaux Chamber of Commerce was formed in 1966 through a collaboration of local professionals seeking to generate commerce and create a strong fellowship between businesses and the community. Our Chamber has continued to recognize and strengthen its admirable role as the hub for Thibodaux’s commerce. To this day, the mission of the Thibodaux Chamber is to promote economic prosperity by acting as a bridge that connects business to community and community to home.

Our economy and workforce are constantly developing: we always support the newest start-ups and local franchises as well as higher education via our hometown University and technical training college. Our Chamber also supports our local health “movement” to inspire mental and physical wellness and a wholesome way of life.

While experiencing life in Thibodaux, you will definitely begin to soak up the spicy Cajun culture through our food, music, and even simple greetings. Thibodeauxville is our annual festival, usually occurring on the second Saturday in November, and it is an all-around example of the contagious nature of our Cajun community.

We are able to make an impact in these areas through the collective vision and work of our volunteer leaders and support of our Chamber members. Together, we will continue to grow our membership and strive to offer programs and benefits that have a direct correlation to business retention and expansion. We will continue our work to unite area leaders and help area businesses grow in quality and in numbers.

Living Cajun: Preserving a Culture For many, the word Cajun conjures up images of the selfcontained bayou areas of south Louisiana that were once inhabited by French Canadians. For Quenton Fontenot, of the Cajun Music Preservation Society, the word has a more personal meaning. “In my mind, it means living a life in the spirit of those that reside in south Louisiana. (It’s about) people that have an appreciation for Cajun culture, food and the physical land and water we live on.”

Fontenot also urges visitors to “eat food they normally wouldn’t, listen to music that may sound a little strange at first, and have the nerve to get up and dance to a Cajun tune.”

As a way of preserving Cajun culture and teaching youths about the origins of Cajun history, the biology department head at Nicholls State University, along with musicians Tysman Charpentier, Allyse Ferrara, Gary LaFleur and Misty McElroy, promote Cajun culture through song.

In addition to Cajun music, which has remained an integral component of the Cajun culture, historic downtown Thibodaux features a variety of restaurants that offer a distinct taste of Cajun sustenance. Cinclare, Spahr’s Downtown and Fremins Restaurant and Catering are just some of the many restaurants that serve cuisine distinctive to the area.

“We are a bunch of people from a variety of musical backgrounds that enjoy playing Cajun music,” said Fontenot, who can usually be found at local events with an accordion in his hand. The group, which has performed at the Louisiana Swamp Stomp Festival in Raceland; the Thibodeauxville Fall Festival in Thibodaux; the Rougarou Festival in Houma; and the Best of the Bayou Music Festival in Houma; helps ensure that the traditional Cajun music scene remains healthy throughout the Thibodaux region. “Many people believe that Cajun music has played a major part in preserving the Cajun language,” Fontenot said. “The music is so basic, fun and clean, that it is enjoyed by all generations so preserving it just makes sense.”

While visitors often frequent the Thibodaux area, which defines much of Lafourche’s bayou community, Cajuns comprise much of the local population. Through generations, many have influenced a multitude of traditions still practiced today. “There have been several influences that have shaped the modern Cajun culture, but it is the traditions that evolved in our region that make the Cajun culture special,” Fontenot said. “There is a lot of effort today that is being spent preserving Louisiana’s vanishing coastal wetlands. In my mind, if we are putting that amount of effort into saving the land that generated Cajun culture, we need to work on preserving the culture as well.”

Economic Upturn In recent years, new retailers are emerging throughout Thibodaux, enticing both residents and visitors to spend their money locally. The newest economic boost brings with it something for everyone – from large retailers such as Academy to locally owned boutiques like Dear Boutique.

Sprinkled among the plethora of retail shops are unique restaurants, many of which offer a slice of Cajun fare.

The ease of shopping and dining venues makes it more convenient than ever for residents to stay close to home.

The added revenue, said Thibodaux Mayor Tommy Eschete, has only helped strengthen Thibodaux’s economy.

“Economic growth is directly correlated to our sales tax revenues,” said the three-term mayor. “A healthy economy allows steady growth within all of our revenue streams; thereby, stabilizing the level of services we can provide from year to year.”

Eschete, a Thibodaux resident for 52 years, has witnessed Thibodaux’s economic boom firsthand, and credits Nicholls State University—its students and employees— for supporting area businesses. “Thibodaux is attractive to businesses in that we are a retail center supported by the activity of Nicholls State,” Eschete said. “We also have excellent educational, recreational and healthcare resources.”

In addition to the influx of visitors to Nicholls State University, Thibodaux’s economic success also hinges largely on its ability to embrace modernity while still maintaining its small-town ambiance. While Eschete admits that technology has been the greatest development he’s witnessed since he first took office almost a decade ago, generations still pass down art, businesses, science and government­—necessary fruits of any successful community—to their offspring to ensure a successful economy. At a time when many small towns face economic crisis, Thibodaux continues to flourish. Rural tourism continues to draw visitors to the area, whether it’s to visit the area’s flagship university or to acquire a glimpse of life on the bayou. “Our growth is steady without much of a roller-coaster effect,” Eschete said. “That is due to the fact that we are not as dependent on the oil and gas industry in our municipal economy.”

Nicholls State University President Jay Clune, Ph.D., says the university maintains ongoing communication with local businesses “so that we can adjust to their needs.”

For example, the maritime management concentration in the College of Business Administration was created as a direct result of that partnership, Clune said. The university is responsible for a $275 million annual economic impact on the area, generates 3,000 direct jobs and represents 10,000 plus voters, he said.

One would be hard pressed to pinpoint an area of Thibodaux that remains unscathed by the economic upturn. It’s clear, however, that the bulk of the unprecedented growth lies along the North Canal Boulevard Corridor, where Five Guys, Verizon Wireless

A Community Focused on Health Designing, planning and building an area with healthcare and fitness in mind can dramatically affect how physically active its residents choose to be. For members of the Thibodaux community, the advent of the Wellness Center of Thibodaux Regional, a 60,000 square-foot medically integrated facility, roused the community into living healthier.

“It is very important to me that I raise my children in a community that values healthy living,” Royster said of her decision to open the studio. “Today’s rushed, overstimulated society doesn’t do much to support a healthy, mindful lifestyle. A quiet, healthy space that attracts like-minded people can lead to a beautiful, supportive community.”

“Thibodaux’s wellness scene is growing,” co-owner of Bayou Barre Betsy Royster attested. “It’s exciting to see.

The (Wellness) Fitness Center at Thibodaux Regional is absolutely spectacular.”

In addition to numerous gyms and studios, Thibodaux’s landscape provides a backdrop for an abundance of outdoor activities. For Royster, watching residents paddling “up” or “down” the bayou, and walking and biking around Nicholls State University is always exciting.

But the center is not solo in its efforts to provide residents with a venue to work towards leading healthier lives.

Boutique studios, like the one Royster co owns, offers clients a chance to immerse themselves into a healthy lifestyle on a very personal, specialized level. “We at Bayou Barre offer barre and barre-focused stretching,” said Royster, who relocated to Thibodaux from Boston two years ago. At the time, Royster said she was disappointed when she couldn’t locate a barre class in town and decided that barre, “this stellar, full-body, multi-generational workout, belonged in Thibodaux.” She began teaching private and small group barre lessons before finally opening Bayou Barre on First Street.

To add to the outdoor fun, the area also hosts annual 5-k runs and walks, which Royster admits is an excellent motivator for people who wish to stay healthy.

“I think a healthy lifestyle is important to members of our community because we are seeking quality of life­— longevity to enjoy our grandchildren; mindfulness to appreciate and learn from our loved ones; and happiness to savor and enjoy the blessings all around us,” Royster said.

Today’s rushed, over-stimulated society doesn’t do much to support a healthy, mindful lifestyle. A quiet, healthy space that attracts likeminded people can to lead a beautiful, supportive community.

Advancing our Workforce It’s no secret that Nicholls State University, a college with an enrollment of more than 6,500 students, is the City of Thibodaux’s top employer. With the emergence of new industries to Thibodaux, more and more employers are finding a bountiful workforce nestled within Cajun country, thanks to programs offered by both Nicholls State University and Fletcher Technical Community College.

For the synergy between businesses and the community to work effectively, Thibodaux businesses and educational institutions, like Nicholls and Fletcher, are enhancing the region’s economic stability and prosperity by focusing on people.

“There is an important synergy between people and business,” said Fletcher Technical Community College Chancellor Kristine Strickland, Ph.D. “Both are essential for successful communities. Fletcher focuses on our people as our core mission is to serve individuals.”

The college, which was established to provide vocational training for residents of Terrebonne, Lafourche, Assumption, St. James, and St. Charles parishes, began with an enrollment of 883 students in numerous full-time programs, according to their website. Due to the success of the trade predatory program and capacity enrollment, extension classes were added to offer the upgrading of skills to people already employed.

Today, the college plays an important role in preparing Thibodaux’s workforce by creating employable citizens. “We hope to prepare individuals for careers, but also for real life through development of critical thinking skills and life skills,” Strickland said. “We focus on this through our core values of personalized instruction and continuing to seek to diversify our community in hiring and in our student body.”

The college is addressing the “skills gap,” which represents a massive pool of untapped talent, seriously lessoning economic underperformance, social unrest and individual despair. Whether residents are youth struggling to enter the workforce, midcareer learners who have lost their jobs because of a business closure or layoff, the college is assisting residents adapt to an ever-changing workforce.

“Fletcher’s main focus in workforce development is creation and implementation of education and training opportunities that are focused on high demand/high wage careers,” Strickland said. “We continually look toward careers of the future and areas of need in the workforce for program development.”

Nicholls State University is also expanding its course offerings to teach students the skills they will need to find local jobs. The university has a history of producing graduates that tend to remain in Thibodaux, Nicholls State University President Jay Clune, Ph.D., said. Those graduates, many of whom open businesses and become nurses and educators, also become leaders in the Thibodaux community.

“We are working on master plans that directly affect our people, places and programs,” Clune said. “These strategic initiatives will position us as a leader in higher education in this region.”

Fletcher has also continued to develop training and educational opportunities in a variety of areas. Most specifically, the college has continued a strong tradition of preparing commercial vehicle drivers, which has a high demand for employees nationwide. In addition, it’s working to close employment gaps in areas such as line workers, heavy equipment operators and licensed contractors.

The college will also be adding new programs in areas such as marsh buggy training, air boat operation and drone technology as well as transportation flaggers and supervisors to meet the growing demand within these job markets. Fletcher graduates have secured jobs with numerous Thibodaux employers, including John Deere and Doug’s Service Company.
