t n e m n i a t r e t n E NY Botanical Garden Featuring lush gardens and art shows, this summer’s lineup includes everything from the culture of Frida Kahlo (“Frida al Fresco”) through the aboretum collections, great for taking photos, appreciating the type of flora that you don’t get much elsewhere in New York City, or even just walking your dog through the shrubs.

Broadway Shows

We often take it for granted, but just a train ride away are some of the best musicals in the world. While Broadway tickets can be expensive, students can get discounts by purchasing “Student Rush Tickets,” which are about $20-$40 each, on the day of a performance. Just bring your ID to the box offices in the morning-if you bring a non-student with you, they will also qualify for a discount ticket. For even cheaper options, try an off-Broadway show.

$1 Movies

During the summer, Regal and United Artists theaters offers the “Summer Movie Express” option, which allows you to watch a movie on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from Their movie schedule is available online, with choices including Annie, The Lego Movie, and Muppets Most Wanted.

Free Concerts

If you’re an early bird and won’t mind showing up at Central Park at 6 am, you’ll have the opportunity to watch free concerts from artists like Hozier, Nicki Minaj and Walk the Moon as part of the Good Morning America Summer Concert Series. These concerts are held every Friday from 7-9am at Rumsey Playfield.

Drive-In Movies

We’ve all been to regular movie theaters, but watching a movie at a drive-in movie theater is a more unique experience. The first drive-in theater was created in 1933, allowing drivers to comfortably watch movies in their own cars. Though they are much less common than they were at their peak in the 1950s, there are still a few drive-in theaters on the outskirts of NYC. The closest are the Warwick Drive-In and Poughkeepsie’s Overlook Drive-In.

Stomp

What distinguishes “Stomp” from any other NYC show is that it features an exhilarating, coordinated blend of beats and percussion sounds, rather than song and dance. Though the cheapest tickets are about $48 (groups get discounts), this is sure to be a one of a kind experience.

Strand

If you love books, Strand will surely be your paradise. Strand, located in the East Village, is not your average bookstore; besides new books, it sells used, rare, and outof-print ones. The nside is filled with towering bookshelves containing reads of every possible genre that you won’t be able to find elsewhere. So take sometime to explore this unique store-who knows what kind of books you’ll find!

DISNEYLAND’S DOLE WHIP

The dairy-free, pineapple soft-serve that hails from Disneyland is hard to find outside of Walt’s playground-- three shops in New York, however, sell the delectable, fruity frozen treat. Orange Leaf Frozen Yogrut in midtown (608 Second Avenue), Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt in the Bronx (3555 Johnson Avenue) and Downtown Yogurt (Jersey City).

ROCKAWAY BEACH

Known as one of NY’s biggest eating destinations during the summer, this season welcomes many new outdoor eateries: anna Bow, a cafe that sells pita-taco hybrids filled with smashed chickpeas and feta, or else grilled fish with pineapple. Also of note are Chicks to go (Peruvian-rotisserie) and Rockaway Roasters (cold brew coffee).

SMORGASBORG

“We brought a picnic blanket and sat on the beach and had the best view! I waited in line for the ramen burger and the line moved fast and it was delicious. I also got a dark chocolate milk shake from the Milk Truck and that was so good! I definitely am going back to try all the other things! Including Dough doughnuts and the fries from Home Frites.”--Rhythkia Francis

For those addicted to the the delicious hazelnut spread, stay cool this summer by making a nutella banana smoothie. Just blend together 1/3 cup nutella, a whole banana, 1 cup yogurt, and 1 cup of ice!

NUTELLA MILKSHAKES

SUMMER CHOW

Food tours typically include a variety of foods and restaurants around a certain area and places in the city such as St. Mark’s Place, Union Square, and Chinatown.

FOOD TOUR

DIY ICE CREAM
