Letter from the Editors The first issue of the year.

If you?ve picked up this issue of The Stand, you may be quite confused. For starters, the format is completely different, the articles focus on topics largely unrelated to school, and a paper copy is being produced. These are just a few of the changes we as editors have tried to make this year.

For this first issue, we reflected on many of the issues The Stand has seen in the past, and have attempted to change the course of this paper. One of the largest additions we have made are weekly meetings with a continuous group of dedicated writers. This has allowed us to develop clear story ideas, and create a seamless editing process. As well, the topics of the articles have been entirely chosen by their authors, which is why it is clear to see the passion shine through the text.

To enjoy these articles, we encourage you to read with an open mind. This will ensure that you absorb all of the information possible, and are actually able to find ways to apply the information to your own life. Moreover, we encourage you to read with critical thought. Although many of the articles take a stand, we encourage you to develop your own opinions based on the information provided.

No matter how you choose to read this issue, or your opinion on the paper as a whole, we thank you for taking the time to peruse this edition. We hope you gain something meaningful from it! If you have any questions or comments please speak to Ben Singer or Maddy Mackintosh!

Review

iPhone XS: Scam or Glam? by 1,125 pixel resolution at 458 ppi, and includes all-screen OLED multi-touch display.

The iphone XS and XS Max came out on October 30th. Of course, some people opened up their wallets and bought one right away. But we have to ask why, for the ridiculous price of $1379 - $1519, people were willing to put that much of a dent in their bank account. After all, it seems like just a little upgrade from the regular X for $350 more.

The best way to know if you should upgrade or not is by looking at some of the special features the new phones have to offer. One of the iPhone?s most famous features is its beautiful screen.

With the XS or the XS Max, the screen includes super retina HD, true tone, and wide colour display. In addition, the screen in 5.8? (diagonally) with a 2,436

Another characterizing feature of any iPhone is the beautiful camera. The camera itself is equipped with a sapphire crystal lens cover and includes six elements. In regards to photography, the XS and XS Max offer digital zoom up to 5x, quad-LED true tone flash (with slow sync), and optical image stabilization.

When shooting wide-angled, the aperture is f/1.8, and when shooting upright (telephoto), the aperture is f/2.4. Finally, the new phones give you access to portrait mode with advanced bokeh (the aesthetic quality of the blurred background in photos), depth control, and three lighting effects: Natural, Studio, and Contour.

Video, on the other hand, has its own special features to offer with the XS and the XS Max. The phones give you access to 4K video recording at 24, 30, or 60 frames per second (as well as 1080p HD recording at 30 or 60 fps). Optical image stabilization is also included for video, and the phones have a video digital zoom of 3x. In addition, these phones have the slow motion feature, which offers 1080p support at 120 or 240 frames per second.

Review

Apart from the screen and camera, these phones include other unique features such as face ID authentication for unlocking the device and an A12 bionic chip. One of the most important features of any electronic device is its battery life. With the XS or XS Max, the battery life includes up to 5 hours of internet use, 16 hours of video playback, 25 hours of talking time, and 65 hours of wireless audio playback.

The question remains: Should you upgrade or not? If you are a tech-interested person with the money to spend, then why not? The iPhone XS and XS Max offer extremely interesting features that you can?t find on many other phones. However, if tech is not your thing and you are saving for something else, it may not be the best decision. You can still access the most important features, and download all of your favorite apps on any other iPhone.

iPhone XR: The Newest Budget Phone The new iPhone XR is the perfect device if you?re a person who wants a good iPhone but doesn?t have the money for the XS (like me). The phone features a stunning Liquid Retina display and 1792x828 screen resolution. It includes an even faster Face ID and the newest, most powerful bionic chip.

The camera shoots 4K videos and pictures with a True Depth facetime/selfie camera.

However, the most important factor when deciding whether or not to upgrade your current phone is looking at the pros and cons of doing so.

Believe it or not, the iPhone XR is extremely similar to the XS and XS Max. Both devices use the same A12 bionic processor, and the same advanced Face ID authentication. In terms of its camera, the XR has portrait mode, and the new mode to adjust depth for portrait photos (just like the XS and XS Max). For all the snapchat lovers, the iPhone XR has the exact same front camera as the iPhone XS and XS Max, so the quality of selfies will not be diminished with this phone. In addition, the XR is waterproof to the same degree that you find with XS and XS Max. On its own, this phone is extremely colorful, coming in an array of color options such as red, coral, yellow, blue, white and black. The XR also has a wireless charging feature, which is a new addition for the iPhones. Lastly, the XR supports dual sim cards.

Although it may sound phenomenal, the XR does have its drawbacks. Most noticeably, the camera on the back of the phone is only a single lens, rather than the dual lens you find on the XS. In addition, the screen on the XR is LCD rather than OLED, but this takes a very keen eye to notice when the phone is used for regular day-to-day purposes. While the XR may not have 3D touch, it does have haptic feedback (forces or vibrations felt by the user when the phone is pressed).

In regards to storage, you definitely cannot get as much with the iPhone XR. RAM on this phone is maxed out at 3GB, similar to the iPhone X, but one less GB than the XS and XS Max. In addition, this phone is limited to storage choices all under 512GB. In totality, this phone is amazing for someone who is not looking to spend buckets of money, and only wants to use the phone on a regular day-to-day basis. This is because it has many of the same features you can find on any of the other, most recent, iPhone models. However, for people who have the money to spend and want the most advanced phone possible, the XR is missing features that can be found on other models.

Ocean?s 8: Was the sequel to the ?Ocean?s 11? fr anchise as progr essive as it seemed?

Now that we've moved beyond awards season, it's time to take a look at some of the movies that made an impact this past year. One that I've given some thought to over the last little while is Ocean's 8 starring Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, and Helena Bonham Carter. The female-dominant cast, the racial diversity, and the representation of minorities in Ocean?s 8 differentiates it from the rest of the Ocean?s 11 series, making it not a movie to watch for plot but for representation. On the surface, this movie was a success in that respect, because it did provide exposure for lesser known artists like Awkwafina, and gave different types of roles for better known artists, such as Rihanna?s Caribbean identity which she expressed by acting as ?Nine-ball.?

However, upon closer examination, Ocean?s 8 is undeserving of being remembered as a progressive breakthrough in cinematic history.

Ocean?s 8 perpetuates stereotypes, presents characters who lack personality, and could even be found guilty of cultural appropriation, with its striking resemblance to the plot of one of China?s most well known novels, The Water Margin.

For many, the all-female cast opened up discussions of how the film industry has chosen to have men as the main characters and women as supporting characters for far too long.

However, upon closer examination, Ocean?s 8 is undeserving of being remembered as a progressive breakthrough in cinematic history.

Ocean?s 8 perpetuates stereotypes, presents characters who lack in personality, and could even be found guilty of cultural appropriation, with its striking resemblance to the plot of one of China?s most well known novels, The Water Margin.

Films where characters have original and relevant traits are considered the most socially and cinematically progressive, especially where commonly stereotyped groups are concerned. Ocean?s 8 attempts to create an illusion of such a breakthrough, switching many -PA GE 5-

stereotypical roles. However, the screenplay writers have failed to erase characteristics that undermine those superficial adjustments. For one, although Nine Ball?s talent for hacking is not one usually reserved for the female actors on the big screen, the realism and credibility are undermined by her seemingly impossible ability to hack into one of the most protected security systems in New York while smoking marijuana. Also, the character of Amita (played by Mindy Kaling) has a conversation with her mother, who tells a jeweler that her daughter will never get a husband unless she is more like her sister. This reinforces a stereotype associated with Indian women: strict parents and a pressure to get married. These stereotypes, innocuous on their own, accumulate to form a false representation of societal groups, and undermine the seemingly positive representation of women in this film.

Even disregarding stereotypes, the characters and events in this film were not created thoughtfully, leaving many plot holes. In addition to Nine-Ball?s unrealistic abilities and glorification of marijuana, her sister Veronica (played by Nathanya Alexander) has a magnetic invention that serves as one of the most unrealistic deus-ex-machinas in the history of film. As well, Sarah Paulson plays Tammy, whose acquisition of the machine which replicated the Toussaint necklace is another plot device that seems hastily inserted and left unexplained.

Ocean (Sandra Bullock) has an ambiguous morality that especially misleads younger viewers in the audience. Her criminal actions after her release, although accurate about the lack of rehabilitation a prison actually provides, tell the audience to seek vengeance by creating a greater problem and making oneself the antagonist. The plan which she devises is poor, and only achievable because of her co-conspirators? abilities, the deus-ex-machinas, and the allyship of actress Daphne Kluger (Anne Hathaway). Instead of a film with a brilliant twist on a common good-versus-evil plot, the characters and plot holes reduce Ocean?s 8 to a sketch and a series of unlikely coincidences.

The devised theft of Ocean?s 8 is already cliche, but the eerie resemblance it has to a key plot point of The Water Margin, an Ancient Chinese novel, makes it border on cultural appropriation. In The Water Margin, seven outlaw men drug soldiers, steal a caravan of gold and jewellery, and are tipped off by an ally when their identities are discovered. Drugged wine knocks out the Major and the soldiers carrying the presents, which were stolen right under their noses; Daphne Kluger is thrown into a haze and throws up while the necklace is snatched from her neck by Constance (Awkwafina).

Both methods of confusion involve drugging. Next, the fates of the victims are the same. Daphne Kluger has allied with the other seven women after clarifying that they have found out their identities; Yang Zhi, the major whom the seven outlaws have

drugged, joins a bandit group on a nearby mountain after regaining consciousness, and his bandit group eventually joins forces with the bandit group of the seven rebels. Finally, the motives for the theft are extremely similar; on the surface, both groups have stolen their treasure for the public good and to act in a ?Robin Hood? kind of manner. However, near the end of the movie, each woman uses the money earned from the jewels for her own purposes. Similarly, at the end of The Water Margin, the strength of the final bandit group -- the 108 on Mount Liang -can be traced back to the wealth that the seven acquire near the beginning of the novel, and it is mentioned that they split the loot among themselves. Small resemblances between the ancient novel and the modern film include the number of people in the original group and the marginalized identities of the outlaws.

Although this may not be direct cultural appropriation, this act of near-plagiarism completely undermines the originality and freshness that many movie critics have praised Ocean?s 8 for bringing to the big screen.

L iving Healthy: The I mpor tance of Sleep and Exercise Everyone thinks that to help the world, we have to help everyone but ourselves. We can?t do this very well, however, if we?re not looking after ourselves. One of the best ways to do this is by getting enough sleep.

Even though staying up late can be enjoyable, staying up late for no reason might not be worth it. Everybody needs sleep, and there are many reasons why you must get enough of it.

Lots of people think that when you go to bed everything just shuts down. This isn?t actually the case, however. When you go to bed your mind and body don?t actually shut down; sleep is when important processing happens and restoration and strengthening of all of the body?s systems occur. For example, sleep makes memories stronger, so you can remember them better. At night, we process the things that happened during the day, and those who get excellent sleep have sharper memories of the day before.

Having a good sleep can enhance the function of your immune system, helping it fight off sicknesses like the common cold. However, no matter how amazing your body may be, at least eight hours of sleep are necessary to reap these benefits.

But it doesn?t stop there - when you don?t get the enough sleep your brain has difficulty functioning. This is undoubtedly something that many students have experienced. Sleep also protects mental and physical health. Everybody needs sleep to learn, but this is vital in children attending school.

Sleep Is Important,? written by Joe Leech, he makes it clear that those who don?t get enough sleep tend to gain weight. In fact, people who don?t get the recommended sleep for their age weigh significantly more than those who get a good amount.

In one extensive review study, children and adults with short sleep duration were 89% and 55% more likely to become obese, respectively (Leech).

A solution for not getting enough sleep is to have a healthy and consistent routine.

This is not saying that staying up late and sleeping in are forbidden, but they shouldn?t be a habit. You should get the correct amount of sleep for your age if possible because there are benefits to having a good sleep but there are also bad things that can happen if you don?t.

Children who are between 6 and 12 years of age should get 9-12 hours of sleep a night. Those who are 13-18 years old should get 8-10 hours. That?s right night owls -- we?re talking to you.

Exercise on the other hand is almost as important as proper sleep. It can help your mood, strength, and the way you feel about yourself. Regular exercise can help you relax and have a better sleep at night.

Many people go on diets to lose weight but did you know that doing physical activity can actually be more effective!

When you constantly exercise you make your muscles stronger which is good for your musculoskeletal system.

Besides helping your body and your mood, physical activity helps your brain.

When you exercise you can reduce changes in the brain that can cause Alzheimer?s disease. Regular physical activity is highly recommended for children because they are constantly growing and learning. Hopefully physical activity becomes a regular part of your lives, because why not do something that is good for you and that is equally as fun?

Eating Well and Having Positive Social I nter actions; Keys to Healthy L iving Important tips you should know about Fresh Food: I think that fruits and vegetables are a very essential thing in life because they keep you healthy, and when you are healthy you have a higher chance of being happy.

You should eat fresh foods because they help reduce the risk of chronic disease and provide vital nutrients that help your body function at its best.

Folic acids help form red blood cells in your body, and red blood cells are important because they help carry the oxygen to your lungs. Some examples of foods with folic acids are leafy greens, citrus, broccoli, rice and breads.

Another idea is to vary your fruits and veggies, as well as the colours of them because they have different vitamins you need to thrive.

Another fact is that diets with lots of potassium may help you have healthy blood. Some things that have potassium are winter squash, sweet potato and potato, beans, yogurt, cantaloupe, spinach, lentils and bananas.

You should try to grow a garden at your house because you get to grow your own food. Another reason why you should try to grow your own garden is because farmers spray chemicals on the foods they grow, so that bugs won?t eat them. The problem is, you end up eating all of the chemicals that you don?t put in your own, home garden.

An effect that not locally grown food has is that it loses the vitamins you want to have, as well as vitamins that are mandatory. This is because when it is being shipped from somewhere very far away, over time it loses nutritional value.

So if you want vitamins, eat locally grown food or your own, and eat the produce quickly so it doesn?t lose the nutrition.

Sometimes you should have to restrict yourself from foods that aren?t good for your body.

Advice

You should try to go to a farmer?s market, to have extra fresh and nutritious foods. You should make sure to eat food at home, and not go out or eating packaged food a lot. Now, you can see the benefits of locally grown food and the disadvantage of food grown not close to home. I hope that you now know how to stay healthy, and are encouraged to share this information with your friends and family.

In addition, having a social life is very important, although what we think "social" means has changed overtime.

Technology, for some people, distracts us from positive relationships. This can make us feel very lonely and isolated.

A sad fact is that when you are completely alone for some time, then you can begin to suffer from mental disorientations, including depression, hallucinations, breakdowns or you might just turn plain mad. Not only can this harm you, but it is bad because you might do terrible things to the people who you used to love and spend time with.

Photogr aphy Spotlight: Julia Nightingale When I first started photography, I didn?t think I would be doing anything different than any other person with the average phone. Nonetheless, I decided it would be fun to take a photography course. I found all aspects of this art form extremely intriguing and I wanted to understand how to capture the most truthful photos I could.

So, I bought my own used camera and started taking pictures. There were so many types of photography to try: Street, lifestyle, landscape. But photos of real people -portraiture -- is what excited me the most. I started taking pictures of whoever would let me.

The eyes are the most interesting.

They tell you whether the photo is candid or not. I love to emphasize them, add detail, and really focus in. It?s what makes the person themselves and lets the outside world access their emotion. Throughout the following photos, I had one goal: to capture the personality of the subject.

Flor in's Stor y Michael: ?Hi Florin! Can you please tell me a little bit about yourself??

Florin: ?I studied fine arts in middle-school, but then I became interested in science. I followed that calling and became an electrical engineer. I had a fulfilling engineering career across two continents and four countries until the accident. I was very active, volunteering for IEEE where I am a life member, and Professional Engineers Ontario, playing tennis, golf, skiing, and coaching all my son?s teams from soccer to baseball. Now I am an incomplete quadriplegic using a wheelchair, the result of a fall on the stairs of my own house.?

Michael: ?How long have you been living with your spinal cord injury and what was your recovery path??

Florin: ?I had the accident in summer of 2010 and life for me and my family completely changed after that day.

Nobody plans for these kind of events and nobody is fully prepared to treat these injuries, not even our health system, as each injury is different and human bodies react in totally unpredictable ways from one person to another. A medical solution that worked for a patient might not work for the next similar case and doctors with different expertise try to solve these problems on the go. The health system should be able to provide personalized treatment and rehabilitation to each -PA GE 13-

individual patient, which is the intention; however, it is very difficult to achieve in reality across the province.

After the accident I spent one year and a half in different hospitals and rehabilitation centers during a very complicated medical process. Everybody thinks that the main goal is to fully recover and restart your life from the moment it got shattered. The reality is a little bit different. In the fall I broke two vertebrates at the neck level, and so the first surgery tried to stabilize my backbone with a titanium plate. Subsequently, I developed an infection, so the surgery had to be redone. During all this time I was in bed, fed through a gastrointestinal tube that went straight to my stomach. After a while, doctors got worried that I couldn?t swallow any more; however, after more time and change of doctors, hospitals, and more investigations, one of the specialists listened to my complaint and confirmed that the lumber plate moved, making a hole of 9mm in my esophagus and that was the real reason I couldn?t swallow.

After this issue was solved with two more surgeries, it was time to deal with another serious issue - due to the deep trauma, additional bone was growing in the left elbow completely blocking the movement of my left arm, a condition called heterotopic ossification or bone spurs. So, after another surgery, I recovered partial movement of my left arm. Later on, I was transferred to Toronto Rehabilitation Institute where Spinal Cord Injury Ontario SCIO is located.?

Michael: ?What are the greatest challenges that you had to overcome since you came home and how did you manage??

Florin: ?Once at home, I had to adapt to a new life style and deal with a lot of medical problems.

There is the mobility issue. Besides the extensive and expensive renovations to our home so I can have access to the first level of the house with my wheelchair - an elevator from the garage, my special medical bed installed in the library, the roll-in shower that allows me access with my commode chair, there were still daily medical issues to deal with. An attendant comes three time per day to help me with daily activities like moving from the bed to the chair and back, doing my personal hygiene, serving my food, and performing special exercises and massage therapy.

One of the medical conditions that I was able to overcome only after 5 years of failed and successful experiments was the fight between bladder infections and irregular bowel movements as the remedies for one issue generally created the other one and so on. Between diet and medication, now I learned how to keep the balance so the Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria that is normally contained in the gastrointestinal tract will not become pathogenic and move into the bladder. I also have constant neuropathic pain in my arms and legs -PA GE 14-

and muscle spasms because my injury is not complete.

Another aspect of my challenges is fighting loneliness and boredom, as mental health is very important in my case. The internet is a huge help so I started studying on Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), a great platform to learn new things. I already finished the Python programming course and several others.

Michael: ?What new hobbies did you take on and how did these activities help you to cope with your condition??

Florin: ?I had to find new hobbies that help keep my mental health balanced.

First of all, our tomcat, Mango, keeps me company when my wife and son are away.

Secondly, I have rediscovered oil painting and its challenges through online courses.

So I am re-inventing myself like the Phoenix arising from the ashes of its predecessor. I present my work in Toronto, at several art shows for disabled artists, I am also part of the e-commerce website Etsy where my store displays paintings from a series depicting eleven colorful animals in motion that I painted over a period of two years. Each work is identified by a time stamp corresponding to one of the eleven moments in a period of twelve hours when a clock?s arms are in line (my mathematical side at work).?

Another activity that I undertook is sailing. After I got my certification proving that I can maneuver a special sailing boat with manual commands, last summer I was able to sail independently on Lake Ontario, after I used the fully accessible TTC system to make it from my house to the Harbourfront.

I also volunteer as a research engineer at SCIO?s location on Sutherland Ave for one of the SCIO/UofT Postdoctoral Fellowship projects on spinal cord research. I go there once per week using the Wheeltrans.?

provide employment opportunities, and facilitate social interactions and physical activities, like the upcoming Ski Day in Collingwood. As lived experience is a crucial element of their work, my SCIO Peer Support Volunteer was able to introduce me to the doctors who were able to perform successfully my latest surgeries and gave me lots of confidence that life does continue after my spinal cord injury.

Also, through its campaigns, SCIO advocates to improve our lives by eliminating physical and systemic barriers in Ontario. One of the items on their agenda is accessible housing for example.

I bought a portable wheelchair ramp to reach into some of our friends?houses, however it can?t be used everywhere.?

Michael: ?Do you have a message for anyone who is going through a difficult experience??

Florin: ?The willpower is very important!

Don't lose hope and keep fighting, trying to solve each problem at a time! Really one step at a time!?

Michael: ?How did SCIO help you through the challenges you faced??
