MESSAGE FROM TIM THORSTEINSON CHAIR OF THE BOARD [As delivered at the AGM on October 19, 2016 in reference to the 2015-2016 academic year]
As the Chair of the Board of Directors, it is an honour to present the Annual Report for the 2015-2016 academic year during which we celebrated the school’s 50th anniversary. The York School saw a strong year in enrolment with a surge of inquiries that increased by 50% and translated to a 32% increase in new students – the highest number of new students in a recruitment cycle. In the second year of our Strategic Enrolment Plan, The York School has continued to widen its reach across the city as a result of a targeted marketing campaign. Our overall school enrolment was a historic high of 636. Despite a crowded marketplace, our Admissions team has managed to reach full capacity in our four key entry grades. In November 2015, we began our $14.4M renovation which is divided into two main phases; the building of the flex space under the gym and the renovation of select classrooms on levels three and four. Phase I is moving on time and on budget [from our current vantage point, Phase I is complete] and we will continue operating in a condensed footprint throughout 2016-2017. The second phase of renovation is expected to be fully complete by 2
September 2017. On behalf of the Board of Directors, I thank the entire York School community for their ongoing support of the school’s mission through fundraising and community relations. Particularly notable was the successful launch of the Fast Forward Capital Campaign. The Board of Directors fully embraced this campaign, reaching 100% participation. Through the introduction of the 1320 Challenge, parents and staff demonstrated their commitment to the project. Overall, a total of $3M was raised towards the $5M capital campaign goal in 2015-2016. Additionally, parents supported the Annual Fund, raising $166,000 to enhance the student experience. Thanks also to The York School Parents’ Association (YPA), the York International Parents (YIP) and the York Alumni Association (YAA) for their commitment to engaging the community. The Annual Night on the Town was a resounding success. Thanks to a dedicated and hard-working Committee,
the well-attended event raised $75,000 net for the Fast Forward Capital Campaign. The graduating class of 2015-2016 included 73 students – a record high. Our graduating students achieved the best-ever average of 34 points on our IB Diploma results, well above the world average. For the first time, our Grade 11 students and parents attended an all-day retreat to help them prepare for the Diploma Programme and they ended the year strongly with 2/5ths of the students on the Head’s List (overall average of 90% or higher). Graduating students submitted 530 applications to various programmes at universities around the world. 24% of the class applied to US colleges, while 8% applied to UK/ EU universities. In all cases, students received one or more offers of admission to top ranked post-secondary
institutions in both Canada and elsewhere. In Canada alone, our students were admitted to all six of Canada’s most competitive programmes. More than $1,000,000 in entrance and scholarship awards have been offered to our students. 35% of grads are heading into STEM programs, while 14% are entering business/commerce programmes. 46% of this year’s graduates entered liberal arts/ humanities programmes. The most popular destinations for our students continued to be Queen’s, McGill, UBC, Western and University of Toronto. International destinations included 15 distinct universities. Our focus for the academic year was to develop more focused and robust student wellness programming. Aligning with our Strategic Plan, there was a strengthened commitment to the needs of the whole student in all three divisions. With the

appointment of an all-school Director of Student Wellness, Elissa Kline-Beber, we had an opportunity to articulate a comprehensive vision of student wellness, which helps students develop effective strategies to manage rising rates of childhood and adolescent stress, and to foster increased resilience and balance in our students’ lives. In all three divisions, there was emphasis on SEL (social-emotional learning) programming. The mindfulness programme at the Junior School is well entrenched. The new Junior School Counsellor delivered SEL lessons as part of the PYP curriculum to all grade levels on a weekly basis. The Middle School Counsellors also delivered bi-weekly programming and this was the second year of the Senior School Advisor programme, predicated on the belief that students will benefit 4
from an enduring relationship with a consistent adult mentor. This preventative programming is in addition to school-wide programming and counselling support. In an effort to engage the critical voice of parents in student wellness, we worked to align our parent engagement programmes. Our vision of student wellness was consolidated by our participation in the Harvard Graduate School of Education’s “Making Caring Common” Programme. This programme allowed us to further craft our vision of student wellness for the next three years and to develop next year’s staff professional development theme of “Relationships Matter.” Senior School highlights include a new “Urban Design” in Grade 9 and an interdisciplinary unit focused on climate change for
Grade 10 Science and World Issues. We enhanced the curriculum in both Grade 9 and 10 with successful Challenge Week trips. Teachers were able to complete the transfer of our curriculum documents to the much more resourceful platform, Rubicon Atlas, and benefited from having their assessment of Personal Projects moderated by the IBO. We continued our focus on the assessment of Learning Skills. The Junior School completed a review of Primary Years Programme to align the Grade 1 through 5 Units of Inquiry with the Ministry of Education for Ontario Curriculum expectations. Students also were encouraged to take on more ownership of their learning by participating in 3-way conferences for parent-teacher interviews. An increased interest in metrics saw testing at the Grade 3 level to ascertain the effectiveness of teaching and learning in the areas of mathematics, reading and writing at the primary level and will help determine the school’s improvement plan. Our academic focus in the Middle School continues to be teaching skills to be effective learners. Professional development was undertaken by all faculty to advance best practices in teaching how to learn. Student centered and experiential learning continued to be a core to the planning and delivery of curriculum. Each grade enjoyed
between 4 to 8 excursions over the school year. Culminating the school year was a subject-specific Challenge Week trip in each Middle and Senior School grade that solidified the concepts or skills acquired throughout the year. Academic achievement reports reveal 18% of students earned the Head’s List (90% or higher), 31% of students earned the Principal’s list (85-89%) and 31% of students earned the Honour Roll (80-84%). In the Junior School, 97% of the student body participated in at least one athletic programme during the school year. In the Middle School, 69% of the students enjoyed one athletic programme, and in the Senior School, 60% of the student body participated in a Gladiator Athletics programme. The York School offered 50 competitive teams from U10 to the senior level and implemented a solid recreational programme for all students. Though not the purpose of our programme, Gladiator Athletics brought home 6 CISAA championships in 20152016. Commitment to Learning Innovation and Technology continued at all levels. In the Junior School, we continued our JK/SK Teacher iPad project and implemented a cloud-based software called Kaymbu to create digital learning portfolios for each student to be shared with parents. The one-to-one Chromebook programme moved into Grade 3 and the Grade 5 Exhibition 5
was completely paperless and enabled by Hapara Teacher Dashboard. This technology allows for real-time monitoring of student learning, collaboration and participation. Another iPad class set was given to Grade 1 and 2, allowing for new explorations in those spaces. New wireless access points were also deployed along with overall bandwidth upgrade resulting in better and faster connectivity for our students.

In the Middle and Senior Schools an iPad Incubator Project was devised with our PHE teachers. Our second year of Hapara Teacher Dashboard along with a shift to school wide “Google Drive Sync” are an exciting evolution of the York School teaching and learning toolkit. Staff now have unprecedented insight into student workflow and can give feedback in faster and more authentic ways. Students benefit with the “real time” backup
capabilities found with Sync, making their work more secure. Our school is financially sound, has increased enrolment, has 100% placement rates at exceptional universities, surpasses the world average in IB Diploma results, manages to provide exceptional academics while maintaining a strong focus on the health and wellness of our students. The 50th anniversary was celebrated with a nod to the
past and a view to the future with renovations underway. It was, in all respects, a successful year. I thank the Board members for their service and support this year and congratulate Conor Jones, Head of School, and his entire team for their hard work and dedication in 2015-2016. MESSAGE FROM CONOR JONES HEAD OF SCHOOL Dear York School Community, 2015-2016 marks the 50th anniversary of The York School. This is a unique time in our school’s history where we recognize a well-established tradition of innovation and excellence, and also look ahead to a transformative future. Throughout the 2015-2016 academic year, we have followed the direction set out for us by the Strategic Plan: 20/20 Vision. This framework has guided many of the initiatives put in place this year, including a more robust student wellness programme focused on social-emotional learning; new educational software and tools to enhance the learning experience at all levels; professional development opportunities for faculty and staff to share best practices; parent workshops and events that promote a more informed and engaged parent community; as well as the decision to undergo a major renovation to the Middle and Senior School. There are many accomplishments to be proud of and to be celebrated from the course of this milestone year. From record breaking enrolment numbers to above world average academic achievement; new wellness initiatives and athletic championships; an ongoing capital campaign and the start 8
of a groundbreaking renovation project – it is clear that The York School continues to thrive and is well positioned to provide a fabulous education for our next 50 years. We have a highly supportive community made up of a dedicated Board of Directors, faculty and staff, parents, students and alumni, all of whom I am very grateful for. I thank each and every one of you for contributing to our community and making this another successful year for The York School. This Annual Report is assurance that we have a good school – there is no doubt about that. FINANCE MESSAGE Balance Sheet The financial position of The York School continues to be strong. At June 30, 2016 our cash balance had increased to $6.3M while our long term debt had decreased to $4.1M. Capital assets have increased over last year mainly due to construction costs of $1.7M incurred up to June 30, 2016. This increase is offset by annual amortization of $1M. In 2016/17 we expect the capital assets to increase significantly as we continue to renovate 1320 Yonge Street. Liabilities have increased over the prior year due to increased deferred capital donations ($680K) and increased prepaid fees ($351K). The increase in prepaid fees is due to the increase in tuition rates from $29,000 in 2015/16 to $29,700 for 2016/17 and increased enrolment. Revenues For 2015/16, revenue from all sources was $21.2 million which reflects an increase of $828,000 over the prior year. This increase is primarily due to increased enrolment levels and the related increase in registration fees (from $5,000 to $6,000) as well as the increased tuition rates. Expenses Expenses have increased by 3% over the prior year mainly due to increased compensation costs. Consistent with prior years, 14
teaching salaries and benefits are the largest single expense of the school. The school remains committed to providing students with high calibre faculty and therefore this expense will remain a significant item in the foreseeable future. The school’s financial results for the year were ahead of budget and we continue to utilize appropriate controls and processes to ensure this continued financial stability. Revenues in excess of expenses for the year total $1.3M of which $726K is transferred to the Facility Fund to fund capital expenditures, major repairs and debt repayments. Conclusion In closing, our financial standing is healthy and the Finance team continues to ensure we control costs, plan for the future and also provide all necessary resources to meet the needs of our students, faculty and staff. MESSAGE FROM JULIE DI LORENZO, ACTING CHAIR OF THE ADVANCEMENT COMMITTEE Challenge, parents and staff demonstrated their commitment by supporting the campaign and by June 30, 2016, a total of $3 million was raised towards the $5 million capital campaign goal.
The 2015-2016 school year was an exciting one as we celebrated the school’s 50th anniversary. In September, over 550 guests joined us at the Junior School for a barbeque and fun fair to celebrate this milestone. The year also saw the successful launch of the Fast Forward Capital Campaign to support the landmark renovation of the Middle and Senior School. The Board of Directors fully embraced this campaign, reaching 100% participation. Through the introduction of the 1320

The Annual Night on the Town was, by all measures, a resounding success. Thanks to a dedicated and hard-working committee, and those who donated and attended. MESSAGE FROM JESSICA MONK YORK PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION (YPA) PRESIDENT Thank you to the wonderful parents, students and entire York School community for their ongoing involvement and commitment to the school. The mission of the York Parents’ Association (YPA) is to promote a strong, cooperative and welcoming parent community and enhance overall communication within the school. To do so, we conducted a number of events through the year to increase school spirit and establish a sense of camaraderie. Through YPA events, we aim to encourage volunteerism, raise funds for the school and contribute to The York School’s objectives and overall mission. In 2015-2016, we worked with 140 volunteers who provided hundreds of hours of their time at events such as the Middle School Movie Night; Halloween; a guest speaker event featuring Dr. Leonard Sax; the Pancake Breakfast, Fun Fair and the most successful Second Hand Uniform Sale to date that raised $7,560. This year, our parents made a financial contribution to the Grade 12 Graduation Dinner which was greatly appreciated by the 2016 graduating class. Our parents also hosted grade parent parties, parent coffee mornings, 20
organized treats for teachers and holiday decorations at both campuses. I would like to thank the hardworking Executive as well as the dedicated Class Parents for their role in engaging our parent community. Thank you also to the York International Parents (YIP) for providing a fun orientation for new international families and for hosting a series of other events to engage international families at The York School and within Toronto. This year is particularly noteworthy for me as my son graduates from The York School. It has been an honour to serve as the YPA President. Thank you for this opportunity – I encourage all our parents to get involved and can attest to how gratifying an experience it can be.
