The role of a school yearbook is to capture and hold memories of your time at York. What you hold in your hands will, years from now, bring back your time at York. I want to congratulate and thank the editor, editorial support staff and photographers of the 2011 edition of our yearbook who spent countless hours producing an excellent record of your achievements at The York School. Of course, none of this would be possible without the direct effort of our staff advisor in overseeing and facilitating the efforts of the yearbook staff. Ms Almeida has contributed her time and expertise in facilitating this wonderful memory. Like me, I know that you will look through your book from time to time to revisit an important and interesting time of your life and years from now, as you read the yearbook, you will remember friends from York and reconnect with them. This has been an extremely exciting year in the Lower School - a year filled with celebrations and important achievements. This year we marked the school's forty-fifth year in operation since opening in 1965, moved into our fabulous new facility and for the first year in its history, the whole Lower School was together in one building! The students, staff and parents all had the opportunity to be involved in the redesign of our playground space for next year. As well, we had our second Primary Years Programme evaluation visit in April. We are very proud of all that we have accomplished in the first year in our new Lower School home. The Grade 5 students were exceptional leaders as the eldest members of the school - they were wonderful reading buddies, fantastic study buddies, assembly organizers, special events coordinators and morning announcers! For the first time, the Grade 3 and 4 students were also reading buddies with the JK and SK classes. With the new gym space, Mr. D was able to further develop the athletics programme to include U-10 sports teams. The Student Recognition Programme flourished - many students received spirit pins in recognition of their participation in school life, as well as certificates honouring them for taking action responsibly and sincerely within the school community and beyond. Teachers and students took full advantage of all the incredible space the building has to offer. The library was always a hub of activity and the Gathering Place was often filled with students reading their library books or parents chatting over a cup of freshly brewed coffee. Many individual and collaborative projects were created in the art room and the Inquiry Lab was a centre for many of the students' hands-on explorations. Students were engaged in song writing and dancing, as well as vocal and instrumental performances, in our music rooms. Students enjoyed working or chatting on the window benches overlooking Yonge Street, as well as eating at the window seats in our beautiful cafeteria overlooking the playground. I want to thank Katherine Almeida, Julie Selley, Sara Spencer and Allison Weaver for the many hours that they spent documenting the wonderful memories of this very special year in York's history in the pages of this yearbook.
