With this issue of the yearbook, we should reflect on the history of The York School. Forty years ago our school began with two classes of very young students at Grace Church on the Hill. From that very !.mall beginning, we have grown from 36 students to over 550 students! We are still a school on a hill but with our own building and students graduating from grade 12 equipped to make a difference in the world. One person who has been so central to the history of York is Mrs. Barbara Galbraith, who sadly will be retiring this June. As a grade 2 teacher, she changed the lives of many a student with her excellence as a classroom teacher. Everyone will remember the high quality of the Museum Day and also the unit on the Pioneer Family complete with Mrs. Galbraith dressed up at her spinning wheel! As Head of the Lower School and Coordinator of the Primary Years Programme, she has continued in her quest for excellence in education. However, we are lucky that she is not going to vanish! Mrs. Galbraith will visit York from time to time as an 18 consultant in the Lower School. Next year, we will be preparing for a PYP evaluation which is slated to take place in 2006 so having Mrs. Galbraith on board will be a great bonus! Long ago, on a dark and stormy night in early March of 2005, those of us who have been at York forever, met to talk to the Archives Committee about the upcoming 40th anniversary of the school and to pore over the ancient artifacts which remain from our early days! Along with the cave drawings and carbon copies of newsletters, we had yearbooks from the 80's, done on a typewriter, filled with fuzzy black and white photographs and more memories than we could ever have imagined. As I write this, we are deep in the frigid winter days of February so it is hard to imagine that when it is read, we will be at the end of the school year and into the warm sunny days of June. The Lower School has had six months in our new location on the ground floor, and the general consensus is that the new arrangement is working very well for us. It is wonderful to have the Lower School library so easily accessible for students and teachers and what a welcoming, attractive room it is. The new play structure, along with the cushioned outdoor tiling, has been getting a great deal of use and has added much fun to recess times; students demonstrating agility and creativity in their various games. In the classroom, teachers are applying the skills and strategies developed as a result of the Tribes training in June. Students are using appreciation statements to one another, developing attentive listening skills and learning to respect the different strengths they can each bring to the classroom community through their participation. Critical thinking skills are being developed at every level utilizing the strategies of Instructional Intelligence: mind maps, Venn diagrams, fish bone organizers, webbing, three way interviews, to name but a few. Everyday Math, introduced in all grades from kindergarten to grade six this year, is proving to be highly successful. Students and teachers are enjoying learning and exploring math concepts through a variety of materials and games. Teachers are appreciative of the resources, the continuity and reinforcement of concepts, the level of skill developed and the challenge of the programme. It is now two years since we were authorized as an IBPYP school. We continue to develop the philosophy of the lB Primary Years Programme and see the results as our students become more reflective in their thinking and questioning, and more able to see different points of view as they pursue their own questions through the units of inquiry. Soon, it will be time to plan the calendar and set goals for the next school year as we continue to work towards the most effective and positive ways to develop best practice in our classrooms. Soon, another successful year at The York School will have ended.

Middle School - Grades seven and eight As you look through the Middle School pages of the yearbook, you will see evidence of the students actively engaged in their classes as well as participating in extra curricular activities and involved in the many school events that took place this year. It was a busy and exciting fall term with the Terry Fox Run, the grade sevens receiving their laptops, United Way week, the Middle Years Programme authorization team visit, and a very successful music afternoon held in early December.

January was the Ul4 girls' basketball tournament in Montreal, as well as Shakesperience and a Musical Theatre workshop for the grade eights. The Middle School dance on February 2nd was an overwhelming success with over a hundred students attending. In February, the U 13 boys' basketball team had a three day tournament at St. Andrews College and, for the first time, The York School hosted the Ul4 girls' badminton tournament in our gym. Camp Oochigeas was the perfect site for our three day winter camp experience where the sevens and eights focussed on developing inter-personal and team building skills through physical and intellectual challenge initiatives that required working together towards common goals. The outdoor programme included nature hikes combined with sketching and photography, snowshoeing, camp fires, quinsy building (snow homes), snow ultimate Frisbee and orienteering. Just before March break, the grade eight students entertained us with their fourth annual Shakespeare Day. The annual Oochathon, student-led conferences, and Earth Day celebrations all took place in April. The Middle School musical production of Oliver meant rehearsals twice a week throughout the winter and spring with the performances taking place in the first week of May. From May 9th to the 13th, the students participated in the Middle School Challenge Week. There were ten challenge week options, each focussing on an MYP area of interaction. In small groups of ten to fifteen, the students had an opportunity to explore an area of interest in greater depth. The spring term was tilled with many other artistic and athletic activities including the Art and Music Night, York School's participation in the Independent Schools' Music Festival, the grade seven Cannes Film Festival, the Athletic Banquet, outing day, and sports day. The grade eight students also had a chance to demonstrate the skills they acquired in the Middle School science programme with their participation in the Science Fair at the end of May. The four House Captains, Carly Surchin, Katrina D'Urzo, Katie Connell, and Ben Boggs, were members of the Upper School House Council and were responsible for organizing House Challenges for the Lower School. This year, there were also ten grade seven and eight students who were selected to represent their peers on school committees. Robbie Mingay and Stacey Wilson were members of the athletics committee, Lily Jdanovitch and Maddy Sugar were on the arts committee, Adam Litman and Jaime McDougall sat on the communications committee, Clare Kordyback and Joanna Berman were members of the Community Service committee, and Julianna Csopak and Jessie Stewart represented the Middle School on the social committee. A small group of students in 8S, under the guidance of Mr. Stone, was instrumental in starting a Middle School newspaper. Thanks to the Middle School faculty and students for a wonderful 2004/2005 school year.
