This year has certainly been a landmark one for York!

The building of the Gym/Auditorium and the Drama Room room is yet another feather in our cap. It is absolutely amazing to me to step outside my office and look down the corridor to the vast expanse of the new building. It opens up many new avenues!

In this edition of the Yearbook, you will see photos of all sorts of activities taken in this facility... quite a contrast to years gone by!

As usual, the work that goes into the production of this publication takes a lot of effort from a number of staff members.

This year we would like to thank Mlle. Almeida, Mrs. Chandler, Mrs. Mason and Mrs. Dowman.

In addition, the leadership given by Miss Charron and Mrs. Gilbert in the suomissions from the Grade 8 students is to be acknowledged as well.

We value the Yearbooks, as they represent a historical perspective of our school which is 37 years old this year heading very soon towards our 40'h anniversary.

There is never a dull moment at The York School! As I talk to prospective parents about what has happened at York over the years, they are truly astonished at the story of the "little school that grew". First the pre-school, then the elementary program, then a high school, followed by the IB Diploma and the laptops.

What's next, they said!

Well... a new Grade 1-4 empire on the main floor, a just-aboutcompleted drama room on the third floor and an amazing new "designer gym" which, once and for all, puts to rest any comments about how a mid-town school can't possibly have a first-rate phys ed and athletics program. York is proof that you can have it all!

The Lower School- Grades One to Six It is hard to believe that another year is over, a year highlighted by the inauguration of our new gym. It opened virtually on schedule, is beautiful to behold, filled with light and space. It represents a great deal: the commitment of parents, the hard work of the board, the vision of the Head of School, the patience and dedication of the Physical education teachers, the vigilant eye and long hours of overseeing by our building manager, the creativity of our architect and many other factors along the way contributing to a building which will add so much to our school life.

Concurrent with the planning and building of our new gym has been the building and development of the International Baccalaureate Years Program. We are now in the third year of implementation of this program and in October we applied to the lBO office in New York for authorization as a PYP school. On February 25'h Brian Nixon, head of curriculum and PYP for St. Andrew's School in Nassau, the Bahamas visited The York School to observe, advise, assess and consult with us on the progress we have made in developing the PYP inquiry approach in our classrooms and integrating the program of inquiry (six main themes or "big ideas") into our curriculum. The lower school teachers have worked very hard at exploring themes and making the PYP philosophy a part of their own educational philosophy and approach. I see so much evidence of this in all the classrooms, from the grade ones' enthusiasm and growing understanding as they explored 'Our Growing bodies' to the grade sixs" unit 'Against All Odds: Human Survival'.

The Middle School The Middle School has grown significantly this year; there are now just over 120 students in the three grade seven and three grade eight classes. We also have our own wing on the second floor which we are enjoying!

It has been a busy, productive year starting with the leadership and team building day at Seneca in September, Dorset and United Way Week in October, Shakespeare Day in November and the art and music afternoons in December. January was the opening of the long awaited gymnasium. The Quebec trip, the grade seven ski day and the boys basketball tournament in Vancouver all took place in February. Just before March Break, The York Singers comprised of many grade seven and eight students, went on a very exciting choir tour of France. April brought our annual Oochathon and student-led conferences. The busy spring term came to a close with the Art and Music night, the Athletic Banquet, outing day and sports day.

The eight grade eight House Captains have been very responsible in fulfilling their duties this year and have raised the spirit level at York by organizing special events, having House assemblies and sporting activities. The grade eights also had more input into the yearbook this year. They were responsible for the write-ups that you see with some of the pictures throughout the yearbook.

As always, the Middle School faculty has been extremely innovative and dedicated in providing the students with a stimulating and challenging curriculum within a caring, supportive environment. From what I see in the classrooms and the hallways, the teachers have certainly been successful in their endeavors!

I want to thank the Middle School faculty and students for a wonderful 2001/2002 school year.

Our second full year of integrated laptop learning in the Middle School went very smoothly with all students and teachers using their laptops in a natural, seamless way to augment teaching and learning on a daily basis. Written communication skills have been enhanced by ease of revision, rapid feedback from teachers and easy access to on-line thesauri, dictionaries and up-to-date information. This ability to manipulate data, analyze results and evaluate resources has increased critical thinking. PowerPoint, Hyperstudio and Arcview have enabled polished presentations and the web page and e-mail have opened up new ways to communicate. It is difficult to imagine life without our laptops and we all feel they have been a positive contribution to life in a vibrant, exciting Middle School.

I have been at York for seven years.

Over that time, I have made and lost friends, nearly failed at least one class every year and tried out for a team each year. Next year I will be back at York in the Upper School, working my way towards college. I hope that high school is everything I want it to be.

I have been at York since grade four and have had many great years here. Each school year gets better. I have made several friends over the years. York has been a great experience for me and it has had a big impact on my life as well as the lives of other students.

These past two years at The York School have been a great experience. I think the teachers have great attitudes towards life and towards the students. My favourite part was being able to be a member of as many sports teams as I could. Mr. Mitchell was a fabulous footie (soccer) coach and I learned a lot from him.

This is my first year at York and finally it's over. Most of the time my friends were there for me which made the school year.

We didn't have much in common at first but, thankfully, we stilt managed not to kill each other. I will never forget ''the fudge queen", Alix, the "neo freak", Vic, and the download mistress Kate. Thanks to Devra and Ali, too. Bye, bye blazer.

So far, I have had a great first two years at York. I plan to come back next year for grade nine, but I think my middle years will be my most lasting memories. When I came to York in grade seven I was quick to make the transition and had a great year.

This year I was in my friends ' class which made the experience even better. I have had a great lime so far and 1 look forward to next year.

I have been at York for eight years. I will always remember the first overnight trip we went on in grade six to Mansfield. I will also remember the talent show we had on one of the nights there. All in all, I think that York is a very good school.

I have been at The York School for seven years now. I really enjoyed playing for the York School sports teams. Although we may have lost ninety percent of our games, it was still fun. In the end, I'm glad to finally wear whatever socks I want and throw away that blazer.

I have spent four years at The York School since grade five. During that time I have made some good friends. I will miss them. I am thankful for my teachers for all their help. I thought that the field trips were fine and that my experience at York School was good.

Next year I'm not really sure if I will be coming back. Whether I do or don't, I know that I appreciate my years here.

I have been at York for five years and so far it's been interesting. The only thing better than waking up at 5:45 for practice was the amount of homework that kept you up until 5:45! Despite this lack of sleep I have had a great time and I've made many wonderful friends.

I came to York from Australia when there were only two months left in grade six. I was nervous but everyone was so nice that I soon felt like I'd been here forever.

I have loved playing on the teams, especially the basketball team this year.

I have made great friends and have wonder1ul memories to take with me when I go home.

This year is my first year in Toronto at The York School and it has been a pleasant year. I moved from London, England where I had lived for six years. It was a big move. I was born in Singapore and lived there for eight years. I remember my first day at The York School because the people here were so nice to me and made me feel welcome and happy to be here.

I have been at The York School since I was two years old. The work at York has been very hard but York has been very good to me and taught me many valuable skills. This will be my fourth and final year at York. I have enjoyed my many years here and have made many friends. I had a lot of fun on the baseball trip and in Quebec. Thank you York for the great friends and great times.

I have been at York since grade four. In a very old building on Sheldrake, we had only one class per grade, no computer lab and only a few athletic teams. Our school has changed , but thankfully many of my friends have stayed. I have been on the soccer, basketball, softball, volleyball and track teams. I will most likely be staying next year.

Maddy Hayles I spent four years at York- some I have enjoyed and some I have not. I have learned many things and I've met lots of different people. I will not be returning to York next year, so thank you for everything, especially for the friends and memories.

It was a pleasant day on Rigel VII and the two suns and six moons glowed with a green light. Walking down the road I suddenly received a message from my brain chip. "Attention Rigel 365.1XQ. Go to the space bay for scouting of a small planet for takeover." That's when my life turned. Now where is this white wood pulp going to end up?

I can't believe it's grade eight graduation at York! Mom and Dad, thanks for all you've done. Thanks to my sisters for tutoring me and to all my friends, thanks for the fun . Thanks to my teachers, especially for the re-tests. 18, look out!

Hi I'm Cory. My favourite sports are hockey and basketball. My favourite food is ice cream . This year I am graduating and then !w ill be going on to high school. The work will be harder, the teachers will be different and it will be a challenge, but I like challenges and this is one that I will take.

Although I only came to York this year, I am already leaving for a new school and city the next school year. I will miss my friends here SO much!! Hope to see you guys in the near future. My old school only went up to grade six and unless I wanted to take an hourlong bus ride to get to the other campus in the far reaches of Toronto, I needed to find a new school. I had never heard of The York School back then. It was not even my choice to come here, but I did and I have no regrets. I have had some of my best years here.

I can't believe it is finally time to graduate!

I just wanted to say hi to all my friends in the graduating class of 2002! I have had so much fun and tons of memories whether it's been having a laugh with my friends, going on our class trip to Quebec or being captain of the badminton team. It has been my second year at York and it has really been an enjoyable one! See you next year!

Girls 5/6 Volleyball 2000-2001 Season

The girls developed their skills and learned the rules of the game throughout the season. Everyone's personal goal of serving over the net was met by the end. Coaches Gilbert and Gustavison tried their best to be awake and vibrant during those 7:15 a.m. Monday practices. The highlight of the season was a mid-season pizza dinner and a grade 5 versus grade 6 game.

Terry Fox Run Fall, 2001

It was a cloudy rainy Friday afternoon on September 21, 2001 when we all gathered together at the reservoir for a Terry Fox spirit rally. Our Upper School House Heads prepared us for the run with a few warm up songs and dances. Parents, friends, teachers, dogs and the Gladiator joined all of the students in the run. Natasha's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Zimnoch, also participated again this year. When everyone arrived back at the school from the long, tiring run, refreshments were available in the MPR. Even though the umbrellas and rain gear had to come out, we all had a great time. Many thanks go to Mme. Lister and the Upper School students for their help in organizing the amazing event, which raised $27952.00 for a very worthy cause. See you next year!

The Dorset Experience

The grade sevens began their trip to Dorset on Wednesday morning, October 17th, 2001. It took us about two hours to arrive, but it was worth the journey. That day, we brought the snow with us - so it was a little chilly! Nothing distracted us from our busy schedule.

On the first day, my class (7L) went on the Geomorphology Hike.

It was beautiful! The fresh snow coated the leaves on the trees and the lake was still and blue. When we returned from our hike, we were- all exhausted. Who wouldn't be after hiking fer three hours?

The other day activities were "Water Management" and "Rocks and Minerals". In "Water Management", the classes were actually able to go to a real dam and explore its different parts. In "Rocks and Minerals", we went across the road to a cliff of rocks and examined the various types of rock that we just learned about in class.

Our day was JAM PACKED! Some of the evening and free time activities were sports games, such as volleyball or ping-pong. We also played drama games the first evening and many of us participated in a lapidary workshop (carving stones and making them into pieces of jewelry). Our second evening was the highlight of the trip. We had a huge dance/party in the lounge, everybody was dancing and singing, nobody even thought of the fact that we were leaving the next day.

After three days of non-stop fun, it was time to leave for the city.

Already? I, along with everyone else, only wish that we could have stayed in Dorset longer.

The Environmental Club York Students Meet Jane Goodall at the Science Centre A group of kids from 3S and grade 4 went to the Science Centre on October 20 to hear Jane Goodall. She takes care of chimps in Africa. In the morning she spoke to kids only. She told a really good story. There was a baby chimp whose mother was shot. An older chimp who was really nice who didn't even know the baby adopted him.

When the baby wanted to sleep the bigger chimp would reach his arm out and let him sleep with him. After that, she dipped her foot in cement and put the block in a new Jane Goodall Garden. After that, she came around to our York School booth and looked at our chimp projects. I got to explain my brother Zak's project because he wasn't there. In the afternoon, she gave a different talk. She started off by greeting us in chimp language: "oo ... oo ...

OOH OOOOH OOOH!" She told us that every person could make a difference every day.

Shakespeare Day: Twelfth Night On October 24th, the grade eights went on a riveting trip to Stratford to see the comical play "Twelfth Night". We participated in an exhilarating pre-show, where we got to meet three of the main actors in the show. Students and teachers played various Shakespearian games on the stage (insulting the teachers was our favourite). After lunch in downtown Stratford, we saw the play itself. It opened the eyes of many of us as we thought some of the characters were different from the way they were depicted in the play. There were many other schools there and the crowd went wild with applause at the end.

From Blueprint to Reality All fall the students and staff anticipated the grand opening of our new gym. What used to be the beloved bubble is now a massive recreational space with a double gym facility, a running track and is used for volleyball, basketball, and of course ... dodge ball. For the whole school it meant a lot less trips to the reservoir where we ran around in sub-zero temperatures suffering from frostbite. Although we missed tripping in puddles and doing face plants into occasional marshes that appeared after a long night of rain, a new gym was a wonderful addition to the school. It also meant that the cleaning staff no longer found trails of mud in the hallways. The new gym offers a lot of natural light with a view of the lakefront, which makes it bright and enjoyable. During our home games the score was always visible on either end of the gym (of course we were always ahead). No longer is the MPR used as an auditorium, because our gym, when converted, is able to seat five hundred! In conclusion, our wonderful new facility is vital to the school.

Our New Gym

Commemorating the Coliseum Thursday January 17, 2002, will always be a very special day in York School history. This was the day that the whole school had our very first assembly in the new 'coliseum'. It was an exciting event to have the whole school in one place at the same time. We were first enlightened with Mrs. Zeibot's opening speech, which gave us a little bit about the history of York's many gyms and how lucky we are to have such a beautiful space. To preserve the shiny gym floor we all came in our running shoes including Mrs. Zeibots, who bought a new pair of running shoes for the occasion. We were proud to give a York School gift to the architect who designed our gym. We were entertained by the primary choir, the jazz band and the cast from Fame who performed two numbers for us.

With the gladiator in the lead, carrying the new York School flag, the team captains from all the winter sports entered the gym via the running track and ran a lap to the tune of Chariots of Fire. It was then that the under 20 basketball team challenged the staff to a match in February, in the new gym. Mr. Feeney made a special announcement about two of York's athletes. The first was Jordan Simon, a member of the under 13 boys basketball team, who scored the first two baskets in our new gym and the second person was Ashley Courtney, a member of the track team, who ran a half marathon at Disney World.

Azra Dhalla, Head of McClung House, presented a cheque for over five thousand dollars to Anna Hatch, from United Way. This was the money that we raised, as a whole school, during United Way week.

Azra also announced the house standings for the first term. Simcoe was in fourth, Champlain was in third, Johnson was in second and McClung was in first. Amira Dhalla and Alex Copeland, McClung House Captains, came up to accept their House shield.

To commemorate this occasion many photos were taken from the track above the gym of all the students and staff. Next time you are in the school search the halls for these magnificent photos!
