THE YORK SCHOOL

A MESSAGE FROM THE HEADMISTRESS This year marks our 30th year. In 1965-1966, we had a very small school of 36 students, all just 3, 4 or 5 years old. Now we can boast that we have 335 students who range in age from 2 to 14 years. However, we still consider ourselves to be small and are also proud of the fact that we do know everyone in all three of our locations. Browsing through our 30th anniversary yearbook, we can see evidence of all of the wonderful and varied activities we are involved in at our school on a daily basis. And ... even though we are small, and in a less than grand facility, we can confidently state that our students receive a first-class educational experience and have fun in the process.

GRADE 9 Our first Grade 9 class is a wonder to behold-tiny ... yes, but weak ... no! Seven students marched through the door in September of 1995, none of them knowing whether they or their parents had made a horrible mistake! Immediately off on an outdoor education trip, they had an opportunity to get to know each other and the faculty members who went along with them. Leadership ideas and opportunities were explored and the seven intrepid explorers came back to carry through these plans. The highlight of the year has been their early morning news broadcasts- always entertaining, never dull- all seven have shown themselves to be quite expert in the field of radio announcing. Helping on the Yearbook Committee, managing the JIL Basketball team and organizing the first Ultimate Frisbee tournament are all on their list of accomplishments. All I can say is that we are very fortunate to have high school students of this calibre!

LOOKING BACK Last spring many exciting events took place at York School. On the next few pages, you can turn back the clock and see yourself and your friends having fun in lots of different ways.

The students of York School had the thrill of singing the Canadian and American national anthems at a Blue Jays game. The school had submitted a tape a year earlier and had been chosen to sing at the ballgame. It was a fabulous adventure for all involved!

CARNEGIE HALL 40 talented children from grades 4-7 went to New York as part of the 5th Annual International Children's Festival. They sang at a performance at Carnegie Hall on Saturday, May 23, 1995. The conductor was Jean Ashworth Bartle, of the Toronto Children's Chorus. Not only did our boys and girls have the honour of performing at Carnegie Hall but also were able to see a lot of New York. To top it all off they were superbly behaved .

GRADE 2 SCIENCE FAIR 1995 From hovercrafts to kites, from wind winches to paper airplanes and sailboats, the grade twos had a fabulous time carrying out their own inquiries into AIR and its uses. The culmination of the study was a Science Fair in which students from other grades came to learn from the grade two scientists and experiment with the models. Look out Ontario Science Centre!

REMEMBERING NATASHA ZIMNOCH

Everyone at York has been touched by the loss of this wonderful young person . .. an excellent student, fun-loving and possessing an enormous amount of talent and natural ability. Natasha was a student at York for 11 years. She first attended our Bellefair location in the Beach and then continued on in the Day School until her tragic death in the summer before her Grade 8 year. Throughout her illness, she never considered herself to be "off school", but rather that she was right here with us! She attended when she could and worked diligently at home when she could not. We will always have memories of Natasha's wonderful smile, her sparkling eyes and the strength of character which she displayed in spite of what fate had dealt her.

... She knew she was going to die. She was really nice to everyone and everyone liked her, even the teachers. She was really beautiful, too. Alessandra Katz

VISIT TO DORSET In October, the grade six and seven students had three days at the Leslie M. Frost Centre where they participated in a number of exciting programmes including geomorphology studies, water management, troubled waters, mapping, ecology studies and recreation activities.

A good catch!

FALL SPORTS The fall sports programme at York was memorable in 1996 as the first "Association Day" was held in mid-October. This "homecoming" day will be a tradition now, with York hosting sports events in the gym and Sherwood and Eglinton Parks. The crosscountry meet, which is the largest other than the final, attracted 250 participants. The Guild Cup is awarded to the winning school. In addition to cross-country, York students were also enthusiastic soccer and basketball players, and members of our new bicycle club.

HANUKKAH Lights, food and games - who could ask for anything more? Well we also had rhythm and music as Mr. Charles Heller led us in foot tapping, hand clapping and resounding Hanukkah songs. Mr. Heller told the history of Hanukkah, and being a cantor, ably sang the blessing as we lit the Menorah. Mr. Heller used to teach science at York and now teaches music for the York board. We were very happy towelcome him back to celebrate this traditional event. In the meantime an army of parents arrived at first light and cooked up a mountain of latkes which vanished in the flicker of a menorah candle.

FRENCH IMMERSION SKI TRIP '96 At the end of January, the Grade 8's and 9's enjoyed 4 days of skiing and French at Mont Orford in the Eastern Townships of Quebec. No one noticed the cold because ... the skiing was "superbe", the food was plentiful and "delicieux", and "le tubing" was "incroyable" at the Cabane a sucre. We visited some local attractions and participated in outdoor games, an evening of songs and entertainment, and our very own dance at the hotel!

GRADES 617 SKI DAY Early on a cold winter's day, the York boys and girls in grades 6 and 7 left Sheldrake Blvd. for a wonderful day on the slopes at Beaver Valley. The skiing and snowboarding were excellent, and who can forget ''Avalanche?" A great day for all!!!

GRADES 415 SKI DAY The track was well groomed . Snow was falling on the trail. The route was flat and long. We were getting hot because of the work. If it wasn't for the snow we would have died of heat and thirst.

METAMORPHOSIS at the Bata Shoe Museum. In March, visitors to the Bata Show Museum saw seven wonderful examples of York student art work in an exhibition called Metamorphosis". The seven pieces on display were part of the grade seven art class study unit on shoes. Running shoes, pumps and loafers were sketched, taken apart and transformed into exciting creations. The seven pieces chosen for display by the museum were: "Porcupine" by Adrian l..o, "Telephone" by Benjamin Cook, "Hippie" by Laura l..ogaridis, "Gold Club" by David Zarnett, "Giraffe" by Nicky Bennet, "Dog" by Michael Young, and "Tree" by David Assad.

Melt butter in a large non-stick skillet (10" or 12") that can also go in the oven. (If the handle does not go in oven, cover it well with aluminum foil so that it can go the oven.) Remove 2 tbsp. of the butter and set aside. Add apples, cinnamon and brown sugar to the remaining butter in the pan and cook approximately 5 minutes. Reserve apples in the pan. To the reserved butter add eggs, white sugar, milk and flour. Whisk together well (this could also be done in a blender or food processor.) Pour this batter over the apples and bake in a preheated 425F/210C oven for 20 minutes or until puffed and golden. Remove from the oven and shake the pan to loosen. Invert carefully onto a large plate. Sprinkle with icing sugar. Serve in wedges.
