The Unnamed Lake It sleeps among the thousand hills Where no man ever trod.

Babe Ruth George Herman Ruth, nicknamed the Babe, was the biggest legend in all of baseball history. He played twentytwo seasons of baseball which made him one of the or iginal five players to be put in the baseball Ha ll of Fame i n 1934 â&#x20AC;˘..

He started his baseball career in 1914 wit h the ¡saltimore Orioles. He was soon sold to the Boston Red Sox where he was a pitcher; and one of the best at that. His pitching record shows 94 wins and 46 losses. From 1919 to 1931, he led the American League in home runs (except for two years). His records ran from 29 home runs in 1919 to 60 home runs in 1927. On January 3, 1920, he was sold to the New York Yankees for $125,000 whe re he played right field. Here he was known as the "Sultan of Swat" and it was here that he started to slug his way into t he hearts of millions of fans. After spendi ng fifteen years with the Yankees, he was sold to the Boston Braves in 1934, where he finished his career He died of cancer ir 1948 in New York City. Everyone who lives there knows August 16, 1948 as a sad day for baseball.

A Bright Winter Day. I stood at the top of the slope looking at the thick blanket of snow that covered it. It was as beautiful as the sunrise in the early morning. The skiers glided down the slope like a sled going down a hill.

The snowy hill shone like tinfoil in the golden sun.! flew down the mountain like an eagle on the wind. The cold breeze touched my face.

I felt like an Olympic Gold medalist. I raced by the trees which were leaning over like black arches of death. I swerved through the golden gate feeling like I held the world in my hands.

Near But Far I have a pl~ce to go that is near home and lets my imagination fly. A nice spring afternoon is the time to go.Long green branches provide adequate shade but when the clear, fresh spring breeze comes up, patches and stitches of bright sunshine turn the grass to a marmalade colour. Rocks are scattered here and there,waiting to be used as a chair. A clear~clean and fresh river flows nearby with grey stones that make the river consist of small waterfalls,which are cold and give the narrow ;snake-like river an alive feeling. A breeze that is cool,yet soft and gentle flows by me as I look down from the height I have ciimbed. ThP height makes me feel like I can jump off the cliff and fall,but th~n aim upwards and gl ide like a bird. The height gives this place an incredibly peaceful feeling and makes me never want to leave.

Luigi's Spice and Coffee Bean Shop Luigi's spice and coffee bean shop Is shoved Inside an ltty-bltty apartment above a tiny variety store. The store has one window looking over Elenor Rd. where soft fragrant smells ooze out of the screens. Luigi has the spice racks on the left of the room overflowing with cloves and cinnamon; ground, chopped and all different styles.

The back wall Is devoted entirely to cooking spices : spice bags, garlic, chill powder, paprika, cayenne, poultry seasoning and other extraordinary smelling spices .

Luigi's favourite thing ln the shop Is his coffee. He has coffee you have never even seen or heard of. He has barrels, bags and cans . It looks as If he had robbed Columbia of all Its coffee.

Let me tell you a bit about Luigi. lie Is a kind man who always has great tasting recipes for his customers .

Personally, I think that people go there for expert advice as well as recipes .

~as once a little man named Zed, who had little, bltty, black eyes that !ways darting about and a bird-like head with wlry, black hair. He was ntlst, and a very good one at that. In fact, one of his ancestors had nvented the underwater bubble which he and everyone else In this country lvlng ln . It was made out of a sort of greyish metal that had been built hstand any amount of water pressure no matter how strong. It had, by Its an almost ever lasting supply of oxygen and was always making more. It pposedly under the Atlantic Ocean but where exactly had been lost over ars. Zed had been told that they had moved under the ocean because of ion In the air.

He had Invented a new gas n case there wa~ still pollution , but most Importantly, hâ&#x20AC;˘ had designed a e that made you rise In air and water. So Zed set off to find a place he could float to the top of the dome without being noticed. Finally, hours of looking he found a spot In a park. a deep breath he put on his gas ma5k and his special Invention and started ng upwards. It was a great feeling to be able to break the gravity of .the nd float up towards the ceiling. When he reached the top he stopped as he ly realized he could not reach the surface of the water without breaking most Invincible dome and letting all the water pour ln. Disappointedly, lded against It as this would kill all his country men. Floating down, llzed his failure, but he knew he could not risk the lives of all his s for his own Ideas and dreams.

He would always say NO to everything and he'd also say, Take a hike," and he'd ride off on his tricycle, which he ' d call his motor bike. The next day, he was walking along the road. A long time ago when I was four years old my Dad and 1 went duwnstalrs Into the kitchen. My Dad put some toast in the toaster and we went upstairs. We didn't have a timer and my toast turned black and then It got boiling hot and soon it came on fire. There was smoke all over the place. Then I said, "Dad,can I please have a glass of mllk?w And then my Dad said ~Go and get It yousel f.'' And the smoke was coming upstairs and I saw the fire and yelled , llfolom,Dad, there's a fire."

And they said,"Where?" I said,"1n the kitchen." My Dad said, "I'll get the fan."

And that's how the fire got put out.

Excerpts from "lerry fox" Stanley Terrance Fox (Terry Foxl was born In Winnipeg In 1958. Terry Fox h4d always been a good athlete. In 1977 he was studying Kinesiology Wilen he discovered he ~~d O~teoqenlc Scarcom4 (a rare type of cancer). His left leg was amputated because of his cancer.

While recovering fr~ his amputation he devised an Idea for a "Marathon of !tope•. lie would run this marathon across Canada tn raise money for cancer research. for this marathon he had a special artificial leg made for hill so lie could run. lie trained liard for this and practically the whnle world was watching him. lie set out across Canada from St. Johns on April 12. 1980.

Over Llle course of his run he ran about 5,373 ld lometres. that Is about forty kllo11aetres a day. He used about twelve artificial legs aml many pairs of shoes. On September 1st, he dipped his leg In Lake Superior to end his marat11on.

On June 28, 1981 Terry Fox died In New Westminster t~spttal. B.C. Every year In SeptC~~~IIer Ule "lerry Fox Kolrathon• Is run. Hany people participate In It; they run. walk or bike In lt. Terry Fox had a mountain In Brlti~h Colwnbl4 namf d dter blm and he ~Jso has a monUIIII!nt of him In Ottawa.

If You Kill I t - Fill It! If you can believe it, I love milk. So does everyone else in my family! I couldn't wait to get home and pour myself a nice, great big, tall glass of cool, creamy, refreshing milk.

Ooy, what a day, I thought as I entered the house. Nobody was home, so 1 dropped my stuff and ran all the way to the fridge, opened the door and, "Yuck!" 1 was choking by the terrible sight of NO MILK. While I was glancing into the fridge with tears in my eyes, Lindsay ran in yelling, "You can't find the milk, can you?! Remember last night? You killed the milk and I said the rest would be gone when you came home from school!"

The Rock Sanctuary once Upon a Turkey It was a disaster! It was at least a semi-disaster. For the first tiDe In Sonawltz history the family wasn't going to have a turkey ror Thanksgiving dinner.

Just when all hopes for a turkey were blotted out of Agnes Sonowttz•s mind she heard a ring at the door. She stormed downstairs and flung the door open In a rage.

There standing In the hall was a wrinkled, crabbed old man. Defore Mrs. Sonowltz could slam the door the magic words of, •would you like to buy a turkey for $1D?• blurted aut of the old man's 10uth. Phew! The turkey problem was solved, at least temporarily.

A few hours later, the turkey was cooked and ready to eat. Just as Mr. Sonowltz was about to plunge the razor sharp knife Into the golden bird, the turkey stood up and pointed an accusing claw at Hr. Sonowltz. When the turkey Introduced himself to Hr. Sonowltz, Hr. Sonowltz was so amazed he almosl dropped the knife. The turkey ' s llcllae turned out to be Tl110thy ~I'd he turned out to be fro11 a Dclglcal bird land where all birds could talk.

The sun slowly rises, casting Its bright, perfect rays through the barricade of pines onto the rocks .

The line of trees surrounding and sheltering the .any clusters of rocks almost welc01e the sun's .amlng light. A wave fr011 a SDall wind or an earl• canoe ride occasionally drops onto the s.ooth concn be.ch. As the day progresses, the tranquility of tf rock sanctuary Is Interrupted by children, eager to climb the cliffs of boulders or e~tplore the opening and crevices between the rocks. The once placid lal erupts with each child who jumps fr011 a tree or rocl Its cool waters. Soon the children disperse and t~ last splash fro. a Giver Is only a r ipple. Only a ft people sit on the mossy, comfortable seats formed 11 the clusters of rocks and the tranquility of the roo returns and with It returns the beautiful, red sun sinking Into the lake. All the water and rocks sle• wai t ing for .arnlng.

llow most people wouldn't believe It that having been In the oven for three hours he could climb up off a plate and tell them that birds could talk, but this was a special case.

Timothy fumbled under his wing and eventually pulled out a round, pink object which he asked each ~ber of the family to touch. Then, all of a sudden, they were all gone to blrdland.

When they arrived In Blrdland they were all In a daze ; all that Is e~cept for Timothy who was eager to show the family around town. The first stop was the Leglstlatlve Dulldlngs.

A proud peacock stood In the speaker's chair whi le a row of elegant hawks made up tf~ op~~sitlon against the ~jorlty govern-ent which was •1de up of bl ue jays e•cept for one sh iny red cardinal who was the leader of the party. The law which was bel n~ disputed was this, "Any bird who Intentionally pecked d fellow bird t o death would sp11nd the rest of Ills or her days behind chicken wire In a coop." The party or hawks was completely against the act for there was nothing they liked better for a quick snack than a "fresh" chick. Unfortunately for the hawks, they were out· voted. All the hawks drearily flopped out of the legislature while the blue jays cheeped In excitement holding their leader on their wings.

The Sonowltz family found the whole procedure nost Interesting and carefully watched It all . After everything was said and done the family was quick ly escorted out of the building by Timothy.

Unfortunately for the famlly ·they had no more time left In Blrdland. The family heart lly tllanked Ti mothy, touched the pink object and were back at home. They all flopped down co~npletely tired and enjoyed a hearty roast beef on kaiser for Thanksgiving dinner.

The wind rushes by picking up fluff from the dandelions and continuing along what seems like a never-ending field of l ight green strands of grass .

The Grasshopper Conflict One bright and sunny fall morning Andre, father of the family, walked out of the small but sturdy Montgomery farmhouse. lie looked around with his large brown eyes for a while and then shrieked. He had seen a thick greenish, black cloud coming towards the homestead.

Andre raced inside to fetch Jean-Paul and Maryanna, his son and daughter. He also grabbed three sharp knives. Father knew that the black cloud 1~as fi lied with millions of grasshoppers. Andre had been warned of its approach and so now set to work. He told Jean-Paul and Maryanna to cut down as many cornstalks as possible. ifMlediately they took them to the barn. They did this In a panic, flglltlng off the grasshoppers with fierce swings and swats of the arm •

After the grasshoppers had left very little of the crop remained. The remaining stalks were taken to the farmhouse. Andre knew he had to travel to the nearest town to buy food. Sorrow, unhappiness and fear of hunger, filled the hearts and minds of the Montgomery family. Andre said to tile rest of the family that It was going to be tough with very little food. He also said that he wouldn 1 t brook with any snacks during the day as all food had to be carefully rationed.

Everyone helped gather necessary materials they would need for the winter. The men collected firewood, and the women berries. They settled down and planned for the new season . They couldn't wait till the spring to plant a new crop.

Changes When ay parents first announced the move I didn't say anything. What could I say? Questions popped Into •Y head. Why are they doing this to me? When were we going? Where were we going? •ro Toronto, • said Dad. I couldn't believe 1t.

About two wee~s later I was sitting In the middle of our new box filled house getting ready foray first day at Samuel Mudd Private School. 1 didn't even know who Samuel Mudd was, or Is, for that matter! Even though I wasn't exactly thrilled about going to this school! had to say the uniform was pretty neat. It was a black pleated skirt, black push-down socks, a while shirt and black tie. and black loafers. Oh, and a black sweater. I stood up lazily and went downstairs to find ay brother pouring orange juice on his cereal, ~Y .ather feeding my sister and wearing her bear-foot slippers and my sister eating solethlng that looked like barf while happily wearing nothing at all. In our family , this was a normal scene.

I took out the •Rice Krlsples• and put some In my bowl.

Fifteen minutes later I was almost at school. There were some girls ahead of me who sounded pretty snobby. "I'm telling you Jessica, she has got to go,• said a girl with a big nose.

•Like, I know Cindy," said the other girl with disgust. Nobody In my old school was as snobby as thlsl I hurried past them and arrived at school five minutes later.

A group of girls walked up to me. "You must be the new girl like, right?• said one girl.

"Yes, I am, • I replied.

"Oh,• said another girl and they all walked away snickering.

Just then another girl walked up to me. "HI, my name Is Robin.• I was surprised she was being so friendly.

•u., I'm Laura," I said. Then, •brlnnggg" tne bell rang. I rushed Inside to

find classroom 6A. Ah, there It lsi ay name.

I walked In and sat down at a desk that said

•Now class, settle down,• said a small. wrinkled, old w~an. *When you are In ~Y class I expect you to behave with docorua. How open your books to page 263 •• •• • Finally lunchtime!

I thought It would never endl There was that girl, Robin.

"Ill. • she said, •want to eat lunch together?"

Five minutes later we were moving slowly down the lunch line. Finally we walked towards a table. Oh nol I was falling! I tripped! I could have sworn so~one trlppeu me. I looked over at the girls who had talked to •e that morning. lhey were all snickering and smirking. I grimaced. I asked Robin about those girls.

She told 11e they were the snobbiest and the most popular girls In the school. I went home that day feeling contented. Maybe It wouldn't be so bad. At least I had one friend. Maybe tomorrow I could make friends with the snobs (just kidding!).

The Crops The clouds kept coming, the snow wouldn't stop, the sun was mad because it couldn't grow crops.

The next day came. There was a clear sky but there was so much snow the sun had to cry.

The sun wasn•t worried. It made its face and the snow started melting till it was The sun was happy as could be, the birds started chirping in the tree. Then the daffodils began to grow and the sun was happy as there was no snow.

ELECT! ON IIEAOQUARTERS REVIEW On the rainy day of October 25,

1988, the grade 4s and the grade 5s

went on a T. T. c. N97 to Willowdale.

I went too and It was a lot of fun.

The first office we went to was the Progressive Conservative, the second office was the New Democrat Party, and last office was the Returning Office. The purpose of why we went there was because we are studying about the government and politics.

When we got to the offices we saw a lot of posters and signs. In the offices the people use electric mall machines. We saw them and I thought they were computers. The candidates are Anne Adelson, John Oostrom and Jim Peterson. The headquarters I like best was the Progressive Conservative because it was more organized and Interesting.

How I'm going to tell you about what I know and who I saw at the Returning Office. I saw a big map that showed Toronto. If you want to be a candidate you need $200.00 and 25 signatures. Now If you are a prisoner or a chief electoral officer you cannot vote, but If you are a Returning Officer you can only vote when there Is a tie. The Returning Office Is non-political. There are 29 rtdlngs across Canada and the ridlogs are re-distributed every ten years.

If you are a candidate who wins you will be a Member of Parliament for up to 5 years.

My opinion about the trip is that the trip could have been a bit longer, but apart from that I loved the trip.

Lost at Sea As the storm raged most of our lifeboats broke free and were crushed by the powerful waves. Our ship was being tossed around by the waves as if it were a baseball. Waves swept over our boat throwing people overboard. I noticed my fri end, who was also my bunkmate, get thrown Into the sea of raging anger. 1 frantically ran to the spot where he was thrown from, just to see him pulled under by a huge wave which swept his corpse onto the decj(, We were all so busy trying to keep the ship afloat that we didn't notice the huge rocj( which stuck up like a tooth until It was too late. There was a loud cracking sound, then hundreds of gargled screams. We were all confused until the captain came running up and said, "We've been hit. We're going down!"

I ran for a 11 feboat and was lowered down to the sea a fl a lone with nothtng to eat or drlnj( In the middle of a terrible storm.

How It was my third day adrift and the storm hadn't gotten any better. I noticed a large rock which I 1~as being swept towards.

My heartbeat doubled and I was so scared that I started to shake. My boat was crashed Into the rock and was crumbled.

1 climbed onto the rock and found a small hole just big enough to fit my whole body, This protected me from the wind.

I caught a small bird which landed to keep me from starving. There I !~en the storm passed over and the board from my lifeboat and tied my clothes dried In the warm sun.

I heard a fog horn and saw a rescue boat which quickly faded Into the dl stance. Night came and I saw a search I ight, but the light never found me. I grew angrier and angrier, mainly at myself, but as time passed, I wondered why the coast guard hadn't found me. These questions became mysteries as yet another two days passed and I continued to hallucinate.

I dreamt that there was a table as long as the eye could see covered in food. I dreamt that the coast guard found me but this time It seemed too realistic to be a dream. I grabbed my so-called flag and waved It in the sky and the coast guard turned and was headed for my rock. Then, the boat stopped! My heart skipped a beat, then I saw an orange blurry thing headed for my rock. As It neared, I found It was a zodiac. It came right up to the rock and the driver told me to climb ln . I desperately complied and was taken to the boat where I was discovered to be hypothermic.

They rushed me to the closest hospital where I was slowly warmed back to normal body temperature .

THE INNUIT PLAY Once upon a time there was a small village. They had no food.

They were so tired. The first group was the clan of the dogs. The second was the clan of the bear. The third was the clan of the ravens. The leader of the clan of the dogs said, " We need some hunters to volunteer to go hunting for us."

Meanwhile Hark got all their stuff on to the sled. The dogs saw the load that Hark was putting on. Dog 3 sa ld, "The load looks heavy. Hy back will hurt."

Back in the igloo, one of the hunters said to his wife, "Please go and get my harpoon and my gun."

Then he called his friends . They got on the sled and they all shouted, "Hush, mush, mush, mush!"

The dogs ran and ran. They were going so fast it looked like they were flying. The men saw a nice spot on the Ice to fish.

They poked a hole In the Ice and started to fish.

Then the water turned to slimy mud and the mud carried her to a big pile of bubbly lava . All of a sudden there was a big roar and she went flying up In the air ~ccompanled by the lava only to go tumbling down a bumpy mountain.

At the bottom of the mountain Instead of taking another bizarre ride she ended up In Olga the witch's den just In time to find Olga coming down a trap door which was her entrance. Lucetta pushed Olga and Olga sprang up, but on her way down , her cloak became stuck In a branch. The ball on the other hand fell Into Princess lucetta's hands.

The witch was left on the tree branch for eternity . Lucetta brought back the ball, married Isaac, her bodyguard, and lived happily ever after.

It's Just a Legend uscotland 1981 on a foggy day . " I stopped, "No! That won't dol" I sat on a rotten old cart trying to get a good beginning on a creative writing story. l started to think of my Nanny, old crabapple, 1 mean Hs . Lllgan . "Oh, oh," 1 glanced down at my watch, "I was supposed to meet crabapple at the Loch tless fish store a half hour ago!"

I jumped up and started to sprint down the street .

Bang! I fell to the ground. In front of me stood Crabapple. "Why weren ' t you at the Loch Ness fish store a half hour ago?" she asked crossly as I stood up. I brushed the grimy dl rt off my bruised behind and replied, "J had to finish my ••• " :Yhe rest of my answer was Interrupted by a scream coming from the Loch Ness. It was from a skinny man. He looked as tf ·he had seen a ghost!

After he had calmed down, l went up to him and asked, "What's your na~~~e ?" He replied In a shaky voi ce, "James Macrae." There was a short pause. " I just saw the Loch Ness Monster!" He fainted .

The words stung my ears like bees buzzing around .

The loch Ness Monster! 1 promised (after he had revived) that I would Investigate. But how?

Suddenly, an Idea popped Into my head. I would sneak past Crabapple at night and go to the Loch Ness.

Phew, I made it. It's 10 o'clock at night and I'm at the Loch Ness harbour. So far, so good. l~urs passed. At 12 o'clock exactly, a big green animal emerged from the deep. "Holy, Holly!" 1 exclaimed. Carefully, J took out my camera.

"Snap!" Off went the camera. Hy deed was done.

Off J went down the road to my house.

1 snuck In quietly and closed the door. l tiptoed up the staircase. Creak, creak. Oh, oh, I had better be quiet . Finally, l reached my room and plopped down heavily on my bed and fell asleep.

The next day was Monday. Oh, no ! I didn't do my creative writing story! 1 quick ly jotted down a story about the Loch Ness Monster . I stuck the pictures I took Into my Idea book and rushed off to school .

At school, after attendance, my teacher called on me to read my story. "One stormy night, I saw him ... the Loch Ness Monster!"

Hy Grandmother

We were leaving so we went to the airport. We took a plane to Whitehorse.

We drove to Skagway.

We were going to Alaska. Mommy's college ro~-mate lived there. She had a cottage on an island. It had one restaurant . We have been going there since I was two .

Grandma had fallen down the stairs and broken her neck. She was paralysed. I was very sad.

Then we decided to take a plane ride over Glacier Bay to get rid of our worries . I think that was the name. We saw lots of glaciers.

Then we took a boat. We saw lots of waterfalls. I made a friend and we played tag .

Then we got to the other side. We had a phone call.

Grandma had died. l was very sad.

PEACOCKS Whenl went to the zoo, I saw a big peacock. It put Its feathers up to say to the female how handsome he was. He shivered and shivered and turned around. The female didn't pay attention. She went on eating.

He kept on turning and twirling around to catch her attention. She Ignored him. She walked away . We looked at his feathers which were green and blue with black stripes . The feathers had eyes on them. The female went away but he kept on turni ng and twisting. It was pretty.

A Calm Evening on the Balcony

It had just turned dark and I was out on my balcony watching the lake glisten like a diamond lying in the sun. There was a s light breeze which pinched my cheeks like static. This breeze pushed the trees in an eastward direction with the leaves letting go of the branches and surrendering to nature. The gravel road twined around the lake like a kite ribbon swayi ng In the wind.

At certain times,movements In the lake startled me as the fish swam through the water l ike javelins piercing the air. I could stay and watch them all night, but 1 had to go to bed.

.._ Morning I'm awakened by a ghostly cry of a loon. I get out of bed and tiptoe across the cold wooden floor towards the door.

As I open it,a soft warm breeze fills the cabin and wraps itself around me 1ike a silk blanket. The cobwebs glIsten 1~i th dew like strings of diamonds tossed throughout the grass. I walk along the damp sand and sit do~m. The mist on the lake looks 1ike a giant ghost receding in my presence, revealing the silvery surface.

A pale band of orange appears'behind the surrounding hills getting brighter and a large fire ball appears. A sharp noise breaks the silence," 5 minutes 'till Dollar Dip!" I go back to the cabin and get ready.

He ran hard but the ground kept changing from sand,to rock,to diamonds,to water, and then to marsh! Qu ickly John picked the f rog out of his shoe and sloshed onward toward home plate. Run! As they played the drone drove to the school. When they got there, John entered the classroom to see Mrs. Bradshaw handing back the college tests; this was odd because John was only In 6th grade!

They all looked out and saw 2 drones on the ground and John's father lying dead on the grass.

I am driving home from the hospital. I am In the basement. I am watching TV. That night I went out for dinner.

I had to drink water because I had to put medicine on my chin.

I went to bed.

We followed a mechanical path. A red beam stet at me to cure my allen cold.

3hosts, ghostbusters, witches and fairies filled the gymnasium . In the first corner, clowns and Jirates tried their luck at a ping pong ball throw ind as well, in Champlain's booth, there was a race to down a licorice for a lifesaver. A highlight ~as when Charles grabbed the licorice from Nancy 3unya rd' s mouth.

ln the second corner, kids were pinning the nose >n the witch and guessing how many jelly beans ~ere in the jar.

The guesses ranged from two :o 1 z i 11 ion ! ln the third corner, kids were trying their luck :hrowing nerf balls into milk crates (the Gradel's >ut threw the Grade 4's). In the other booth, :hey went fishing and tried to catch ten point Jhosts and other witches, pumpkins and bats.

Johnson House had "Hit the Witch" and "The Jelly Bean Race" where you throw nerf balls :hrough a hoop to hit shapes taped on the wall. ln the other game, you had to run around a :curse with two jelly beans on a spoon ••• ind after that, you get to eat the jelly beans.

Jf course, some people couldn't do it for 3EANS !! !!!! Yuk , yuk!!!

VALENTINE 1 S DANCE Wow Daisy! Snazzy posters! No wonder there was such a great turnout at this year's Valentineâ&#x20AC;˘s Dance.
