Music for the Soul and Your Health

Do you think music really affects your well-being, learning, cognitive function, quality of life, and even happiness? There have been numerous surveys that show that this is true. Our physical, psychological, and mental health CAN be affected in various ways by the music we listen to. From music therapy now offered in many school districts based on sound research to music artists visiting patients in hospitals, songs can be healing and even prevent long-term illness.

Physical Health

What about dancing the night away with music? Music can lift your mood, so put on a happy tune if you are feeling blue. Up-tempo music can give you energy. And if you combine music with an aerobic and social activity, you can receive the maximum health benefit from it. Participate in a Zumba class. Do jazz aerobics. Jump to the rhythms of rock & roll. Or better yet just go dancing. Listening to music affects our physical health in many ways, from calming our heart rate and blood pressure to reducing pain. Even singing a song to an infant as they fall asleep can help them get through the night peacefully.

• Balance: Many older adults experience uneven gait or will fall at some point during their lifetime. Those with conditions such as Parkinson’s are at even higher risk for falls. Walking with music has been shown to improve gait when balance training during physical therapy.

• Heart Rate: A study published in 2022 by CERUS found that classical music affects the autonomic nervous system, triggering a calming reaction that can reduce the heart rate. This is especially beneficial for those with heart disease.

• Blood Pressure: The same study noted a decrease in blood pressure. Over 80% of those taking part in the study found that fast-paced dance music had a positive impact on mood, lowering their stress level and blood pressure.

• Pain: According to a 2012 study, two daily sessions of music listening helped a sample of chronic pain patients relieve symptoms related to conditions such fibromyalgia, inflammatory disease, or neurological conditions as well as the anxiety and depression linked to chronic pain. Part of the appeal of using music listening to relieve pain is that it is a simple and cost-effective approach that can be tailored to the needs of individual patients. Since emotion and pain are strongly linked, music that resonates with positive emotions triggers positive memories can also affect mood and the ability to handle pain.

• Endurance: It’s believed that music may help stimulate the body during cardio and strengthbuilding exercise to help increase endurance. This could possibly be affected by increased motivation, a psychological effect of listening to music.

• Sleep: Sleep quality is significantly improved in both children and adults when listening to calming music before bed. Relaxing music prior to sleep results in less sleep disturbance throughout the night for a more restful night.

Psychological/Mental Health

Music also affects our psychological health, helping to increase our brain’s functioning and improve performance, from learning to creativity to motivation.

• Cognitive Performance: Interestingly, not everyone performs better during mental tasks while listening to music. If you are one of the many who learns better while enjoying the amplified sounds through your headphones, it could be that music helps to improve your cognitive performance.

• Creativity: The same way music affects cognitive performance, it can enhance divergent thinking, which is a key element of creativity, especially when it comes to artistic work.

• Motivation: Music affects the entire brain, making it work more efficiently and strengthening the neural pathways that connect the various areas, such as the cerebellum and limbic system. In other words, music gives your brain a mental boost..

Mental Health

When we think about listening to music and how it affects us, most of us think about our mental health. Listening to the music a little too loud on the ride home from work can be cathartic if you’ve had a hard day. A breakup playlist might be just what you need if you’ve had your heart broken. Or perhaps you have an exciting road trip playlist ready for that long drive to visit a friend. Pressing play on the right song might be just what you need if you find yourself in need of a mental health boost.

• Mood: Music can influence your moods by either playing into the emotions you are feeling, allowing you to release them, or giving you a way to disengage from the mood of the moment, distracting you for a moment so you can process them later. This is a healthy way of coping with strong emotions so long as you come back to revisit them when you are able.

• Stress: Certain songs may help the brain’s alpha brainwaves sync to the beat, creating a rhythmic flow that is only present when we are conscious but relaxed.

• Depression:There is a report in a national magazine that states music therapy helps to support medication and talk therapy for those experiencing depression, making them more effective at lifting mood by increasing levels of dopamine.

• Anxiety: The same article explains that music therapy can reduce the levels of stress hormones, which can reduce symptoms of anxiety. Results can be seen immediately whereas other anxiety treatmentscould take weeks or months to be effective.

• Serious Mental Illness: Serious mental illness includes such diagnoses as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, PTSD, and borderline personality disorder.

Overall, music has far-reaching benefits when treating them alongside medication management and talk therapy.

A Journey with Erisa: It Was Meant To Be Celebrating Our 10 Year Anniversary

On July 4, 2013, the United States was celebrating another Independence Day. The air was filled with the laughter of friends and family, aromas of mouthwatering meats on the grill and all eagerly anticipating the sun to set, so the sky could be lit up with the eye candy of fireworks filling the night sky. This wasn’t the reality for Viola(Martin) Terry and myself, Erisa My government name is Shannon Erisa (Redding) Martin. On the contrary we were fasting and in great anticipation for the fourth of July to pass so that an exhilarating experience, which would far outweigh fireworks, could come to fruition in our lives. This was the day a relationship cultivated at church over fifteen years prior would reiterate an undeniable truth, that our meeting was meant to be.

We met in 1989 at Shiloh Baptist Church in Vacaville, California when my blended military family, affectionately known as The Black Brady Bunch, relocated to the same city. Upon relocating, my family was adamant about finding a church home. My mother, a seasoned choir director and my stepfather settled on a small family-oriented congregation. It was there that we established an immediate bond with the Terry family, and Viola soon became known as Aunt Vi. The 15-year unofficial title of aunt became official on July 23,2004 when Maitresse, Aunt Vi’s nephew from Georgia and I married. I relocated to Georgia.

In 2007, Aunt Vi’s name went on the National Kidney Recipient Registry while her nephew and I became parents that same year. Potential donors stepped forward, but a compatible donor wasn’t found. Aunt Vi’s unknown plight continued as I ran an in-home childcare in her childhood state. Then in June 2011, a trip to California revealed a startling truth. Aunt Vi needed a kidney transplant

-CHIC SAVANT 8

It was then that I let her know that I was willing to see if I was a compatible donor. Although in need, Aunt Vi continued to think of others concerned about minimizing the possibility of us having more children. I assured her I would be a one and done mommy. Although a gift to stay at home to aid in the daily nurturing and education of our son and other infants and toddlers I’d subconsciously traumatized myself but courageously acknowledged that this wouldn’t be my daily reality. Graciously Aunt Vi reassured me that she would share the first step information when the time was right.

My established commitment on my license to being a donor at death was a reality in life. I know there are many ordinary people like Aunt Vi and I….those in need and those willing to give. Our simple plea is to become a donor( living or deceased) your life can make a difference, for there is a hero in all of us. I am a true believer that nothing happens by accident. Likewise, I believe that God fit every piece of this puzzle together perfectly because it was meant to be.

August 2012 a text sent by Viola’s eldest daughter short and straight to the point said, “ Hi Shannon. This is Felicia. Mom’s kidneys are failing. Is your offer still open?’ Without reservations I texted back , “ Yes!”

On July 5, 2013, I had the privilege of being a kidney donor and Aunt Vi the proud recipient of a new kidney. Following the surgery Aunt Vi looked at me and simply said,” We’ve always been connected but now you are a part of me. You are my Angel.” Little did she know her new lease on life had become one for me as well. I couldn’t let this experience go by without etching it in time in pictorial form in a thank you card to family and friends alike who supported us physically, spiritually and emotionally during this time.

THE SANTA CLAUS CHRONICLES OR WHAT DOES SANTA CLAUS HAVE TO DO WITH LEADERSHIP? A CONTINUATION…

I have so thoroughly enjoyed writing about Santa Claus and Leadership that I have decided to name this segment the Santa Claus Leadership Chronicles. Again, I did say there was more to come!

Well now, Santa is MAKING A LIST and CHECKING IT TWICE! Here’s how he does it – first PLAN YOUR WORK.

Begin by breaking down a huge annual goal (possibly your mission)into a series of manageable bite size subgoals. This is for the teams within the department and the individuals within the teams.

Everyone should have a goal, including Santa.

Once our individual and group goals are identified, we move into the planning (MAKING the LIST) phase. Plans provide us direction, focus and organization we need to stay on task.

AND, since none of us have perfect memories, according to Santa, we need to make sure that we have written action plans—here are some questions for the developing our plans:

1. What needs to be accomplished?

2. Why does it need to be done?

3. When should it be accomplished?

4. Who and how will it be accomplished?

Next, WORK YOUR PLAN! Santa and his team spent lots of time and effort developing detailed instructions that even a child could follow, but THEN—emails started flying through the door claiming our toys were faulty, said Santa.

CHIC SAVANT 10

We investigated and realized the children weren’t doing the assembly it was the parents… they were ignoring the instructions. It had become nothing more than an academic exercise because they directions were not being followed.

If you want to hear JINGLE BELLS ringing on the 24th, we should set goals and live by them all year long.

The key lesson is that you gotta follow the plan! Once a reasonable plan is made, you should immediately implement it.

Lastly, Santa warns – “TO MAKE THE MOST OF WHAT YOU HAVE”. Goal setting –planning your work and working your plan, not only leads to effectiveness, but also fosters efficiency. You minimize WASTE.

We need to make the absolute best of our resources, whether it be time, materials, money are the talents of your team (i.e., the elves and the reindeer).

1. Prioritize your tasks

2. Start and end meetings on time

3. Teach time management skills

4. Involve the people with the knowledge to make decisions

5. Enhance employee expertise through training and development assignments

6. Be religious about preventive maintenance

7. Encourage employees to share their knowledge

Women and their Rebellious Bodies

Women are bombarded with images of influencers and celebrities who have the perfect body, skin, and hair. These images are often heavily edited and do not reflect reality. However, they still have a significant impact on the way women perceive themselves.

The modern-day working woman is a force to be reckoned with. She is intelligent, driven, and fiercely independent. She has shattered the glass ceiling and is now a staple in every industry. However, despite her many accomplishments, she still faces challenges that are unique to her gender. One such challenge is the issue of body image.

Working women are often expected to conform to a certain standard of beauty. They are bombarded with images of thin, flawless models in magazines, on billboards, and on social media. The pressure to look a certain way can be overwhelming and can lead to a host of body image issues.

However, many working women are fighting back against these unrealistic standards and embracing their rebellious bodies. They are taking ownership of their bodies and defying societal norms. In this article, we will explore the reasons behind this rebellion and the impact it is having on the working woman.

The Pressure to Conform

The pressure to conform to a certain standard of beauty is not a new phenomenon. , it has become more intense in recent years. Social media has played a significant role in this.

Working women are particularly vulnerable to this pressure. They are expected to look polished and always put together. They are judged on their appearance as much as their performance. This can lead to a constant feeling of self-doubt and insecurity.

The Rebellious Body

Despite this pressure to conform, many working women are embracing their rebellious bodies. They are rejecting the idea that they must look for a certain way to be successful. They are taking ownership of their bodies and celebrating their uniqueness.

The rebellious body is a body that defies the norms. It is a body that does not conform to the standard of beauty that is imposed on women. It is a body that is imperfect, but beautiful, nonetheless. The rebellious body is a body that is not ashamed of its flaws. It is a body that is confident and unapologetic.

The Impact of the Rebellious Body

The impact of the rebellious body is significant. It is empowering women to embrace their uniqueness and reject the idea that they must look a certain way to be successful. It is giving women the confidence to be themselves and not apologize for it.

The rebellious body is also challenging the status quo. It is forcing society to reconsider its narrow definition of beauty. It shows that beauty comes in many forms and that there is no onesize-fits-all approach.

CHIC SAVANT 13

The rebellious body is also having a positive impact on mental health. Many women who have embraced their rebellious bodies report feeling more confident and self-assured. They are no longer weighed down by the pressure to conform and can focus on their work and their goals.

The Importance of Embracing the Rebellious Body

Embracing the rebellious body is important for several reasons. Firstly, it is important for women to feel confident in their own skin. When women feel good about themselves, they are more likely to be successful in their careers and in their personal lives.

Secondly, embracing the rebellious body is important for society. It is important for us to recognize that beauty comes in many forms and that there is no one-size-fits-all approach. When we embrace the rebellious body, we are creating a more inclusive and diverse society.

Finally, embracing the rebellious body is important for future generations. When we show young girls that there is no one way to look, we are giving them the confidence to be themselves and pursue their dreams. We are creating a world where everyone is accepted for who they are, not what they look like.

The modern-day working woman is a force to be reckoned with. She is breaking down barriers and shattering stereotypes. However, she still faces challenges that are unique to her gender. The pressure to conform to a certain standard of beauty can be overwhelming. Many working women are fighting back against these norms and embracing their rebellious bodies. They are taking ownership of their bodies and celebrating their uniqueness. The impact of the rebellious body is significant. It is empowering women to be themselves and challenging society to reconsider its narrow definition of beauty. Embracing the rebellious body is important for women, for society, and for future generations. It is time to celebrate the rebellious body and all that it represents.

There are many words of wisdom that I live by daily. I have learned these philosophies throughout my life from close family, friends and mentors. No matter the situation, I am reminded of idioms that help me prioritize, categorize and summarize the events of life. With that, each encounter is logged into its appropriate sector of my perspective.

Prioritize. I am filled with a profound sense of who I am and Whose I am. This bit of information reminds me to be loving and bold in spaces I share with others. I have learned to have crucial conversations and share truth in love. These talents make even the toughest conversation received with understanding, and they have opened the door for collaboration. I define who I am in each space I share with others, and that is based on the faith I have and the precepts I follow. My perspective is guided by gratefulness. I am always seeking to find the joy in each moment; even if that joy is focused on the future; a belief that blessings are coming ,and trouble does not last forever. In these moments, I take a deep breath and remind myself to take life one step at a time and to start with the most important things first followed by timelines for given tasks.

Categorize. This is key for me as I work in a people industry. I encounter people from all walks of life day to day at church, at the job or in social settings. I am reminded that few things can be taken personal. Many people, say things they do not feel or relay them in ways much more harsh or demeaning than intended.

. Their own trauma and drama guides their response. Yet, none of us are as great as our best moment, nor are we as bad as our worst moment. We all need people who see past our hurt to our point, and who try to find ways to help us be better. Please know, this takes a lot of self-work, but it is worth it. I have developed true friendships with people who were patient with me and others who I have returned that patience to as well.

Here is the truth: Some days are hard; some moments are harder. At the end of the day, I rely on what I know for sure. I rely on my faith. I rely on my perspective of myself and my intentions. I rely on my understanding of community and networking. I rely on my ability to see things for what they are and still show love. I rely on quiet moments to center me and distant memories to make me smile. At the conclusion of each day, I find myself resilient, unbreakable, sincere, loving, kind, empathetic, a bold person with clear boundaries. I hope the same for you. I hope the person you become is the person you have always wanted to be. I hope you show up in spaces that you share with others in ways that allow them to grow and mature to be their best selves.

We are all a mess and a work in progress simultaneously. I am grateful for the humanness in that; that none of us are required to be perfect. Yet, all of us have a responsibility to attempt to be and become our best selves. One day at a time. One breath at a time. One circumstance at a time. With confidence, sincerity, truth and joy. That is what I know for sure.

What I Know for Sure

The Art of Balancing Well-Being and Productivity

In effect, we can “balance” our work experience by bringing in emotionally uplifting and joyful moments while still striving to reach our professional goals.

These efforts can make work feel less like something we need to take a break from, and more engaging, satisfying, and fun!

But how do we do this?

To be highly effective at work while feeling energized, happy, and healthy, it is essential that we find ways to effectively balance the pursuit of personal well-being with resultsdriven job productivity.

This can seem difficult when our roles are demanding in terms of time and workload. Success in a job may require us to achieve certain metrics or reach specific milestones. Even the “benefit” of working from home, which has become so prevalent, can bring challenges as daily pressures and distractions compete for our attention. Opportunities to enjoy in-person time with our peers, which can provide a bit of “play” to our days, are also missing from the picture.

As so many studies suggest, ensuring that we find opportunities to step away from a hectic routine to recenter ourselves, is an essential practice for achieving mental and physical well-being. We can – and should – be deliberate about creating mindful moments away from the pressure. However, we can also find ways to infuse the work itself with activities and qualities that feel most uplifting and natural to us.

One way is by setting external and internal (mental/spiritual/inspirational) goals and working to fulfill both in equal parts. This will require a very deliberate effort to know and understand what matters to you, what you enjoy, and how you like to experience your life.

You may want to start by defining your values and considering the activities and the qualities you most enjoy in your personal life. You can then allow these to begin to take root in your work. This practice can encourage more engagement, motivation and inspiration overall, while improving productivity in the professional realm. You may even find that applying metaphors that go along with things you love, or value can aid in bringing more of you and a sense of fun, joy, peace, excitement, etc., to your work.

The Art of Balancing Well-Being and Productivity (cont’d)

Let me provide an example from my own experience. In addition to my work as a business coach and consultant, I’m a singer and a songwriter. Though I’m actively engaged in professional pursuits which have nothing to do with music, I find that if I consider how my professional work can relate to the principles of music that I love, I enjoy it much more and it begins to feel less like work!

For instance, I may think of a project I am engaged in to help enhance team cohesion from the standpoint of removing discordant notes or harmonizing relationships. Or, I might think of my personal coaching work as an opportunity to find the melody and rhythm that resonates with each client and strive to strike a chord (get it?) with them. When I’m working in this way, I can get really jazzed (okay, I’ll stop now) and thus feel more motivated and refreshed, which can help energize me as I help others!

Literally including moments dedicated to music during my workday can also get me inspired to dig into the work at hand. Perhaps I could take a few minutes to write out some thoughts about a work topic in the form of a song or poem, or even just listen to a few minutes of inspiring music to energize me before I get started on a work project.

Of course, everyone’s practice will look different, but if these ideas resonate with you, I hope you will explore them further. Taking some time to integrate those personal qualities, values, and activities you care most about into your professional activities may start you on your way to a more engaged and productive career and to experiencing a happier and healthier life overall. Additionally, please don’t forget to regularly take breaks away from the grind for personal self-care and downtime –something we all need.

Egypt, the Ultimate Travel Destination

Egypt has long captivated the imagination of travelers worldwide with its remarkable history, iconic landmarks, and undeniable charm. Nestled in the northeastern corner of Africa, this ancient civilization is a treasure trove of archaeological wonders, natural beauty, and vibrant culture. From the awe-inspiring pyramids of Giza to the bustling metropolis of Cairo and the enchanting waters of the Nile, Egypt offers a captivating experience like no other. We will delve into why Egypt is a beautiful place to visit, exploring its historical significance, diverse landscapes, cultural richness, and renowned hospitality.

For history enthusiasts, Egypt stands as an unparalleled destination. Its antiquity is unmatched, providing a glimpse into the world’s oldest civilizations. The iconic Pyramids of Giza, the last remaining wonders of the ancient world, effortlessly embody the rich heritage of engineering marvels of the pharaohs. Exploring inside these colossal structures evokes a sense of wonder and admiration for the individuals who built them more than 4,500 years ago. The valley of the Kings stands as another testament to Egypt’s historical significance. Home to the tombs of numerous pharaohs, including King Tutankhamen, this ceremonial burial ground offers a glimpse into the beliefs and funerary rituals of ancient Egyptians. Each elaborate tomb reveals intricate paintings and hieroglyphics, highlighting the supreme artistry and storytelling prowess of this ancient civilization.

Is the role they play in your life important? Would their absence negatively impact your life in some way? Do they possess the emotional intelligence to navigate a crucial conversation on issues and challenges that arise in the relationship? Are they there for you in a meaningful way during hard times?

If the answer to all or most of these questions is “No”; pack those relationships up and give them away in love. If the answer to these questions is “Yes”, then it may be worth the effort to apply a little TLC and give the relationship the benefit of a spring cleaning.

Step 2: The relationships that made it through the purging process require the same level of detail that you put into spring cleaning. Just like our homes, regular basic care is required to maintain the benefits of “spring cleaning”. That means spending quality time, creating memories, having honest conversations even when they are hard, and being there for them when it matters.

The Divine Connector's Guide to Building Lasting Relationships with Funders for Nonprofits

Nonprofits, I see you. You have a big vision, a passion for change, and a drive to make a difference in the world. You want to help those in need and create a better future for all. And I admire that, I really do.

But here's the thing, my dear nonprofits Building relationships with funders is just as important as getting the grants you seek. It's not just about the money, it's about the connections, the collaborations and the long-term partnerships that will help you sustain and grow your organization.

You see, there are two types of nonprofits seeking funding and grants. There are those who are reactive. Just like reactive job seekers. They apply for grants, wait to hear back, and hope for the best. And then there are those who are proactive, who not only apply for grants but also start connecting with funders and building relationships.

Reactive nonprofits are often frustrated with the process. They complain that they don't have enough funding, they don't have enough support, and they don't have enough time. They blame the system, they blame the funders, and they blame themselves. But blaming will not get you anywhere. It's time to be proactive, my dear nonprofits.

Proactive nonprofits understand that building relationships with funders is key to their success. They don't just apply for grants, they research potential funders, they attend networking events, they reach out to other nonprofits, and they seek advice and guidance from those who have been in their shoes. They know that building relationships takes time, effort, and dedication, but it's worth it.

Just like proactive job seekers, proactive nonprofits don't wait for opportunities to come to them. They create their own opportunities. They think outside the box, they innovate, they collaborate, and they build a network of support that will help them achieve their goals.

So, my dear nonprofits, don't just focus on getting grants. Focus on building relationships. Reach out to funders, tell them about your vision and your mission, and ask for their advice and feedback. Attend events, meet other nonprofits, and learn from their experiences. And most importantly, be persistent. Don't give up after one rejection at one setback. Keep pushing, keep hustling, and keep building those relationships.

Remember, being reactive in your grant-seeking process will only get you so far. To increase your chances of success, it's essential to focus on building relationships with your funders. Don't be afraid to be proactive and connect with potential funders even before you submit your grant proposal. And most importantly, never give up. Use every rejection as an opportunity to learn and grow.

By implementing these strategies, you can take your non-profit organization to the next level and achieve your goals. So, let's build those relationships and make a difference in our communities.

Our New Normal---from the Heart!

For better or for worse, for richer or poor, in sickness and in health, til’ death do us part! If you have ever been married…you remember those words. However, no one knows when or if the worst and the sickness will come. But when it does….

I have been married to the love of my life for 29 years. We will reach the 30-year mark on Feb 15, 2024. We have had a great marriage. Good and bad, ups and downs like any other married couple, but I can honestly say that the years have taught us the meaning of true partnership. We have learned how significant our roles are in our relationship. We have learned the value of what we have built, and we have learned how to love one another without overwhelming one another with unrealistic expectations of who we are and what we have. But we have now been placed in the challenge of our lives. We are being tested like no other.

In 2019, my husband was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. The diagnosis was welcomed given; I had been seeing changes in him for at least two years prior. There were slight changes that I noticed in a man that had become a creature of habit, he had a routine, but I began to see differences in the way he would walk, talk and his memory. He didn’t have what some would consider the classic signs of Parkinson’s. He did not have the tremors made famous by legendary boxer, Muhammad Ali or the excessive twitches of Michael J. Fox.

Instead, Mike was diagnosed with bradykinesia it is a form to Parkinson’s where the reduction of automatic movements (such as blinking or swinging your arms when you walk) Difficulty initiating movements (like standing out of a chair) General slowness in physical actions. The appearance of abnormal stillness or a decrease in facial expression.

My husband is plagued with chronic stiffness that is sometimes so debilitating that it renders him at times in a statuesque state. Parkinson’s is a progressive disease, and it has slowly progressed in over the last two years. On what we call a Parkinson’s good day, he can get out of bed on his own, feed himself, dress himself and even drive to the store. On what we call a Parkinson’s bad day… I must bathe him, feed him, and dress him. A Parkinson’s bad day brings the bouts of dementia, the hallucinations and falling out of bed. These are the days when my wife’s hat doubles as the caregiver hat.

CHIC SAVANT 29

My husband is now on disability, and I work a full-time job from home. It has been a blessing because those bad Parkinson days are coming more and more frequent. But my husband is a trooper. The very cut and dry man that he is believes that his condition is what it is and has yet to complain.

I do what I need to do to ensure that he has the best quality of life. I refuse to let Parkinson’s win. This isn’t the life that I thought we would have together but it’s the life we have been given and I am still look forward to our days ahead… not knowing what those days will look like. Not knowing how much Parkinson’s plans to evade our lives. Not knowing what other changes will occur, changing this once 5’9 former Marines who lived his life so fearless and unapologetically into a man that slumps over, shuffles when he walks and dealing with bouts of dementia. Caregiving is more than an obligation to some; it is the ultimate gesture of providing kindness to another person. It is the ultimate sacrifice of love and commitment. In my case, it more than solidifies the vows that I made 29 years ago, to love and cherish, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, until death do us part. It means, I know that you matter, and I will prove it to you. Everyone wants to know they matter and that their life means something. I try my best to prove it to my husband every single day. Out of all the things we go through in our lives, the day to day, the good, the bad and the ugly. The best thing I can ever do for him and let him know that his life will not go unwitnessed or unnoticed because I will witness and notice it……always.

This is our new normal…and I might say from the heart!

FIVE (5) U.S. FOODIE DESTINATIONS

As a traveling foodie, my goal is to eat my way around the world, so for the last 30 years that’s what I’ve been doing. While I have eaten delicious meals in many countries, I’ve also eaten many right here at home. Here are 5 of my favorite U.S. foodie cities:

NEW ORLEANS serves up a combination of Creole cuisine, Cajun cuisine, soul food and mouthwatering seafood; like po' boys, muffuletta sandwiches, oysters Rockefeller bananas Foster and scrumptious beignets, lightly dusted with powdered sugar. My favorite restaurants included Mahony’s Po-Boys & Seafood, Mother’s Restaurant, Willie Mae’s Scotch House and Café du Monde. It’s definitely a city for world-class eaters but be sure to go hungry - the portions are huge!

NAPA has long been known as one of California’s most famous wine regions. But it is also a culinary destination that serves up fresh local produce, top quality meats Italian food and fresh seafood - in fine dining and casual restaurants. After a day of wine tasting, you can choose from a variety of restaurants. Some of my favorites are Allegria (Italian food), Mustards Grill (contemporary farm to table), R+D Kitchen (classic American & sushi). I especially like the onsite deli at V Sattui Winery, where they make their own charcuterie which pairs with any of their 200 different cheeses, and fresh fruits. They also sell house-made desserts like Tiramisu, Crème Brûlée, seasonal Fruit Tarts, and Italian-style Gelato. It’s a great place to enjoy a picnic lunch on their beautiful grounds while admiring the surrounding Napa Valley scenery.

SAN FRANCISCO is definitely a foodie’s paradise where I’ve been able to enjoy a variety of cuisines from all over the globe. With more than 4000 restaurants, it’s difficult to decide where to begin. Maybe a fine dining experience at one of the Michelin star restaurants, a burrito in the Mission District, or dim sum in Chinatown, fresh seafood on Fisherman’s Wharf, clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl, pasta in North Beach…the choices are endless. A few of my favorites are Brenda’s French Soul Food (creole), The Plow (best breakfast in town), A Mano (Italian), and of course Ghirardelli for chocolate.

SEATTLE is another city that offers a variety of delicious cuisines. You can enjoy fine dining, sink your teeth into juicy burgers, get a sugar fix at a bakery, or enjoy a hot steamy bowl of Pho, and of course, mountains of seafood. You can relax at an indie coffee shop or visit the Pike Place Starbucks, the first Starbucks store. I enjoyed eating my way around the Pike Place Market, one of the oldest farmers markets in the U.S. that houses stalls selling fruit, vegetables, the freshest seafood and shellfish; and lots of wonderful eateries. I especially enjoyed sitting at the counter of Pike’s Pit Bar-B-Que, watching them smoke brisket while I devoured the best barbeque chicken sandwich I’ve ever had. Right across the street I noticed a long line outside Piroshky Piroshky, so I went over to investigate and found out that they were selling delicious Russian pastries – both sweet and savory. I bought several and it was definitely worth waiting in that line to get them. So, when you’re looking for a foodie city, don’t sleep on Seattle.

LAS VEGAS has always been famous for gaming and shows but it also offers world-class dining. Several celebrity chefs have restaurants on the Strip and the choices are numerous. Even the buffets have been elevated to unforgettable culinary experiences. My favorite is Bacchanal at Caesars Palace. My favorite Chinese restaurant on the Strip is Beijing Noodle No.9 , also at Caesars. Eataly Food Hall at Park MGM serves a variety of authentic Italian food. For Burgers I recommend Bobby Flay’s Burger Palace. Yardbird serves up delicious southern food and bourbon cocktails. When I crave pizza, my go-to is Grimaldis where the pizza sauce, handmade mozzarella and fresh dough always hit the spot. There are so many restaurant choices in Las Vegas that it’s hard to choose a favorite. But trust me, what happens in Vegas….is really delicious.

Minding your Heart: Matters of the Heart as it relates to Mental Health

We often hear the saying, “the heart wants what it wants”. What we don’t talk about is what happens when the heart doesn’t get what it wants. For some people, it is as simple as a light shoulder shrug and then they just continue to move on with their life. However, for others it takes a toll on our physical, mental, and emotional state. Sometimes in a positive way and other times in a negative way.

Have you ever seen those girls who just had a bad break up and then they decide to get their “sexy back”? They are in the gym getting their revenge body together with the playlist blasting all the top popular man hating songs. They may get a drastic haircut, new wardrobe, or even decide to join a new singles group. I personally am guilty of a few if not all of these things at some point in my own life. What I do wonder is, how are they feeling to their core? How is their heart truly healing and how is it affecting their mental health? One thing I know for sure is what you see on the outside is not always a reflection of what is on the inside.

Research has shown that life circumstances play a major role in our emotional response by way of how that circumstance invades our mind. Matters of our heart are not always connected to love and romance.

Matters of the heart are your desires that take residence at the core of your being. Those things, people, and parts of life that are important to you. So much so that if it is affected in any type of way, it triggers an emotion that affects your mental health.

Heart triggers can affect your mental health through anxiety, stress cardiomyopathy also referred to as acute emotional distress, depression, self-harm, and unfortunately suicide; to name a few. It is important to realize and understand that you are more than your circumstances. You are more than the cracks that are in your heart.

I personally have had my own struggles with heartbreak and depression. Not everyday is great, but I work hard to be intentional about the conversations I have, the music I listen to, the movies I watch, and I even keep track of how much time I am spending on social media. For example, one of my heart’s desires is to fall in love and be truly and genuinely loved in return, in the romantic sense. On days that I am feeling lonely I don’t listen to RnB music. When I have done that, it has only made me sadder and more depressed about being alone. Seeing all my social media friends getting married, having children, and getting a house has sometimes made me feel like I am failing at life.

I will deactivate my account for however long I need. That could be a couple months to over a year. As the saying goes, “out of sight out of mind.”

Those actions I take for myself came with taking time to learn myself through selfreflection, therapy, and surrounding myself with a support system who love me immensely but are always honest with me. Truthfully even with having those tools and support system the reality is I still have bad days, weeks, and sometimes months. What I am determined to do is not give up and I don’t want you to give up on yourself.

Take advantage of the different ways to help heal your heart, mind, and soul. Some of those ways are:

• Therapy

• Consistent exercise

• Taking time each day to get some fresh air

• Healthy eating

• Journal

• Read positive affirmations

• Listen to encouraging and uplifting messages and music

Allow those matters of your heart to motivate you and do the work to make sure your mind, body and soul are both physically and mentally healthy. Remember this also works in reverse. When good things happen in your life that make you happy and make your heartbeat with joy there are noticeable changes. Such as, others may notice a glow on you, you will sleep better, and have more energy throughout the day. That is due to the positive heart triggers having a direct reflection on your mental health. That’s the energy you should want. It’s a whole vibe!

Always remember, self-care is the best care!

Have you ever wondered why you haven’t heard from a potential employer where you submitted your resume? Do you know why, it’s probably because it ended up in the trash. Have you ever wondered why you haven’t heard from a potential employer where you submitted your resume? Do you know why, it’s probably because it ended up in the trash.

When an employer identifies a job opening, they use ATS to describe the skills, education, training, and many other details they want in a candidate for the position. ATS, then scores and ranks resumes as they continually come into their office. What most do not realize is that this ATS system is unlike a human because it rejects resumes according to certain keywords, fonts that they don’t recognize, and because candidates lack experience.

Here are some tips to navigate the ATS system when applying for a job.

First, look at the keywords in the job description, and use thoughtful, relevant keywords. Modify your keywords for different job openings. Check publications, LINKEDIN and other professional organizations for ideas for keywords.

Next, make sure you follow the postings instructions to the letter. This is really important! Use the requested format; if there is no format requested, use Microsoft WORD.

Do not scan and send your document to the prospective employer. Prioritize your formatting details. Generally, the use of the TIMES ROMAN font and 12 pitch are the norm. Bold or capital letters are okay with your name, address, and phone at the top of the resume. Your margins should be 1” on all sides.

Choose a resume style that’s compatible with ATS such as a chronological work history with jobs listing in order by date. Even though a functional resume could most likely capture your transferrable skills, it is likely to be rejected by ATS. Your resume should be no longer than two pages. The general rule is to include your previous 10 years of work history. If your most relevant experience is older than 10 years, consider noting in under PROFESSIONAL SUMMARY, but not in work history. ATS systems check for both your work experience and the number of years on the job.

However, keep in mind that networking is still the best way to bypass ATS systems and to get your resume directly in the hands of the hiring manager.\

HAPPY JOB HUNTING!!

Almost There

I would like to celebrate this last quarter of the year. Kudos to you. You made it. You confronted every trial that came your way and survived. I am proud of us.

Some of us struggled through these first eight months of the year. We embraced trials, disappointments, death of loved ones and so much more. We endured changes with jobs, mates, friends, and ourselves. We laughed. We cried. We found ways to address the issues.

For some of us, we shocked ourselves with how much we have grown and accomplished. We looked at how we handled things and smiled. For some of us, we disappointed ourselves and saw a new low we did not think was possible. However, you handled it, just know that each day provides opportunity to learn and grow. Don’t be too hard on yourself. This too will pass. I hope you learned a lot about yourself and how you process things. I hope this guides you to pause before you respond to difficulties. I hope you commit to building up yourself and presenting your best self in every situation. I hope.

On top of hope, I would like to share with you three guiding precepts that helped me. One, I am stronger than any moment I face. My faith guides me, and I am confident that God has a plan that involves my success. The truth is prayer works when nothing else does. Secondly, you know the truth by the way it feels. When people lie or are mean, it reflects their poor character not yours. Be sure to resist the opportunity to respond in a way that demeans you or your character. Liars reveal two things: their character and the character of the frenemies who believe them. Finally, believe in your superpower. Believe in your ability to change, grow, evolve, fix the narrative, try again, believe again, dream again…none of us are stuck. With one decision, we can change our trajectory. I believe in you.

With these in mind, I hope that the rest of the year wows you with blessings that make your cup overflow. I hope your influence grows and penetrates every environment in which you are meant to flourish. I hope every obstacle disintegrates and has no power in your life. I hope you fuel your life with light and love, and most importantly HOPE!

Are you Grant-Ready and Purpose Driven? You Should be! A Guide to Small Business Funding with Impact

Alright, fellow small-business visionaries, let's talk shop and get real about taking your ethically responsible missions to the next level. You're not just business owners – you're the change-makers of tomorrow, and funding is your secret weapon. So, grab a seat, 'cause we're diving into the art of intentionality, program development, and forging partnerships that'll rock your world.

First things first, let's talk about intentionality. You've got these amazing missions and objectives that are like the North Star guiding your business journey. Well, guess what? When it comes to funding, you've gotta make sure your intentions are crystal clear. Think of it as laying out a roadmap for your potential backers. Show them how your values align, and how your business's heartbeat syncs with the change you want to create.

Program development, folks – this is where the rubber meets the road. You're not just asking for funds; you're showcasing a blueprint for making a dent in the universe. Paint a picture of your program's impact. Break it down, step by step. You're not just saying, "Hey, we need money." You're saying, "Hey, we're about to revolutionize our community, and we want you on board.“

Thinking about partnerships? Picture this: you're not a lone wolf in this endeavor. You're part of a pack of like-minded warriors. That's where local, state, and industry connections come into play.

It's like a superhero team-up, where each member brings their unique powers to the table. Collaborate, brainstorm, and innovate together. You've got the fire; they've got the fuel. It's a match made in business heaven.

But wait, there's more. We're talking about the granddaddy of collaborations – the big leagues. Imagine joining forces with organizations that span beyond your imagination. This isn't just about rubbing elbows with the bigwigs; it's about synergizing with others who share your passion. It's about saying, "Hey, we've got a vision that's bigger than us, and together, we can make waves that'll ripple through generations."

So, here's the deal, small-business rockstars. Funding isn't just about the cash; it's about bringing your ethically responsible dreams to life. It's about weaving intentionality into every thread of your proposal, making it impossible for anyone not to see your purpose. It's about crafting programs that aren't just ideas – they're blueprints for a better tomorrow. And it's about building partnerships that are more than transactions – they're collaborations that'll redefine the landscape.

Women that are eager to get into a fitness regime and look ‘snatched’ in that bathing suit or that elegant gown ‘sashshaying’ down the aisle. Here are a few tips that any woman can rely on to stay fit and snatched:

1. Drink plenty of water. You should always drink half your weight in water. For instance, if you weight 200 pounds, you should be drinking 100 ounces of water per day.

2. In the morning before you hit the floor, give thanks that you are still alive, and take several deep breaths.

3. Exercise – do at least 30 minutes of exercise, three to four times per week.

4. Nourish you body and soul. Eat healthy make sure you have carbs and proteins in your diet each day. Nourish your soul but also speak positive affirmations each day. Post them in your bathroom mirror.
