When innovative organizations join forces, accelerated, community-based transformation of our American healthcare delivery and medical education systems can materialize. Everyone wins! Ultimate success depends on leadership emerging from all levels within high impact organizations like The Wright Center. Please consider this inspiration your formal call as a Wright Center employee to embrace the leader in you. “There is a healthcare revolution taking place: One that measures and rewards success, where no one benefits unless the consumer does, and in which competition leads to falling costs and rising quality.” – Medifuture Forum: The Oliver Wyman Health Innovation Center and Tampa Hillsborough Economic Development Corporation
Message from the President/CEO We are surrounded by reminders that we are officially starting Autumn in Northeastern Pennsylvania. The signs are undeniable – the leaves are changing colors, the temperature is dropping, and school is in full force. We can learn so much by just actively watching the methodical yet perceived scrambling preparation of the squirrels as a designed and instinctual force of nature! Take a moment and appreciate the astonishing, instinctual, 4,000-mile migration of millions of Monarch butterflies from the Northeast to the Catalina Mountains in Central Mexico. Appreciate your own resiliency and power to help transform medical education and patient care delivery! For The Wright Center, Autumn means we have successfully delivered our largest classes of graduates in organizational history and coached our largest group of interns through orientation, and they are now well-immersed into community-based, patient care delivery. We are embracing the upcoming recruitment season as we unfold a shared, courageous commitment to the 2015 National Allopathic and Osteopathic Residency and Fellowship Match programs. Together, we have made enormous strides in building our medical education and patient care delivery infrastructure, and we are poised for excellence as we continue to build and inspire a mission-driven culture of accountability, joy and inspiration in our daily privileged work. Along with recruiting for our regional Internal Medicine, regional and national Family Medicine residencies and our Cardiology Fellowship, we are proud to seek pioneering applicants for a new Osteopathic Family Medicine expansion in Western Pennsylvania and a newly-accredited Allopathic and Osteopathic Geriatrics Fellowship program. This organic growth in Graduate Medical Education training programs and our continued related expansion and enhancement of comprehensive health services within the communities we serve is a tremendous testimonial of mission delivery. To aid us in our training program and employment recruitment endeavors, we are further expanding our GME and management infrastructure and are creating a multi-part documentary that will be used to tell The Wright Center’s story to a variety of audiences. We continue to upgrade our website and social media channels to give national and local presence to our organizational brand. We have invested in appealing marketing materials and are hiring a full-time GME recruiter who will be responsible for traveling nationally to raise awareness of and interest in The Wright Center’s training programs. We held our inaugural recruiting open house in August in Scranton, which was a great event for all of the participants. We have made great strides in affirmative action employment and enhanced the cultural diversity of our staff, trainees and patients served. Recruitment and Wright Center brand awareness will be most successful if all employees engage and reliably demonstrate organizational pride. Please engage and take a brief moment every day to reflect on your personal value as a Wright Center employee, staying mindful of our new Mission and Vision Statements and our Core Values. These should guide our daily work and are excellent talking points amongst current and prospective patients, residents, faculty, employees and community partners. Keep a copy of these with you and take the time in your daily work to reflect and ask yourself how you are demonstrating the essence and building the core strength of The Wright Center. I must take a moment to express incredible pride regarding our first amazingly successful Wright Center Leadership Institute team who worked passionately for months to organize a very successful employee retreat at Nay Aug Park in August. The retreat was a wonderful team-building event where employees were able to interact with each other across departments. The group exercises promoted our mission, vision and core values, and it was so inspiring to witness how everyone came together to support one another. This is the kind of mutual support and trust that we should all hope for and promote across our organization. We need to help, encourage and challenge one another to keep moving The Wright Center forward to unfold our collective genius and to co-create our most generous gifts for our patients, our learners, our community and each other.
Thanks to each of you for all of your daily contributions to the reality of The Wright Center. Your contributions, together with our patients and learners, remain the greatest fueling energy of our management team’s challenging, but rewarding, self and mutual discovery of the team-based leadership in us. Linda Thomas-Hemak, M.D., President/CEO In The Wright Loop | October 2014 | Page 2
