The Wright Center continues its commitment to creating compassionate, patient-centered primary care physicians by graduating its 38th class of residents and fellows and welcoming 61 residents into the 2015-16 programs.

Accountable

Message from the President As a mission-responsive organization, we are acutely focused on the needs of our patients and the continual development of competent, compassionate, 21st century physicians.

To us, accountability is not only taking responsibility for our individual and collective actions, but it’s also about proactively making deliberate decisions to look beyond the “how things are done” to the “how we can do things better” on a perpetual and passionate journey to excellence.

The past few months have been especially exciting at The Wright Center. Thanks to an amazing community philanthropist and friend, Ann Moskovitz, we’ve been able to purchase and implement an inventory management system to more efficiently utilize our resources, while integrating medication and vaccination information into our patients’ electronic medical records. This management system has given us a new level of insight for streamlined workflow processes, encouraging accountability to our patients, their safety and our organization.

As a community-governed graduate medical training consortium, we are accountable to our larger medical community and the noble profession of medicine. This year, we committed to sponsoring our most robust Visiting Professor series yet. As we welcome nationally-recognized healthcare and medical education leaders, we will collaborate with The Commonwealth Medical College and encourage regional colleagues to attend and learn along with us.

We are also accountable to our residents and fellows and are always looking for ways to improve their clinical and didactic learning environments, striving to connect them with innovative, patient-centered faculty mentors. We are so excited to have officially welcomed Dr. Wasique Mirza into The Wright Center family as Acting Program Director for Internal Medicine at our 2015 graduation ceremony. Dr. Mirza’s connection and commitment to our region, incredible experience providing non-discriminatory healthcare and undeniable desire to play a pivotal role in educating our future doctors offer incredible value and impact potential.

His leadership role at The Commonwealth Medical College strengthens our institutional collaboration in testimonial of our recent formal affiliation. You can learn more about Dr. Mirza on page 15.

Finally, this quarter, we celebrated the mission delivery milestone of graduating 33 physicians and fellows who are now off to start their careers in medicine serving patients regionally and across Pennsylvania and the United States. Through your amazing investment in their training, they were immersed in community-focused, patient-centered medicine and clearly understand the impact their actions will have on patients, colleagues and care systems. Our physician graduates, current trainees and faculty are accountable to their colleagues, to themselves and, most of all, to their patients. On page 5, you can joyfully read a touching letter from a patient of Dr. Vijaya Dendi, one of our current third year Internal Medicine residents. We are humbled to have received many letters just like this over the years, recognizing each as a testament to the residents who are living and delivering our mission, vision and values each day.

Heartfelt thanks to each of you for everything you do every day to ensure delivery of our inspiring Wright Center mission to continuously improve education and patient care in a collaborative spirit to enhance outcomes, access and affordability. Please know your tireless efforts and value add are undeniable and humbly acknowledged!

Inventory Management System Made Possible through Generous Donation Innovative System Showcased and Generous Donor Recognized at a Special Event Held at The Wright Center for Primary Care Mid Valley A local supporter of The Wright Center, Ann Moskovitz, pledged a gift to the organization in memory of her late husband, I. Leo Moskovitz, in March of this year. Her donation was used to purchase and customize a cloud-based inventory management system to integrate medications and vaccinations within patients’ Electronic Medical Records.

An overview of the system, success metrics and notable improvements were showcased at the Mid Valley Practice, on May 14, by University of Scranton student, Priya Patel and Wright Center employee, Anthony Pero. The executive leadership team was in attendance for the presentation. (Pictured above)

Prior to implementation of the inventory management system, staff members manually verified all inventory. Now, handheld scanners are used to track quantities of supplies, medications and vaccinations, as well as the physical locations of all inventory. The office manager is notified automatically when any quantities are low.

By using this new system, fewer medications will expire, resulting in less waste. The cost

savings will be tracked and quantified over the next few months, and The Wright Center aims to hire additional employees for increased patient satisfaction using the new found cost savings.

The system is in use at the Mid Valley, Clarks Summit and Scranton locations.

Kudos to Dr. Jignesh Sheth, John Janosky and the IT team for leading the successful implementation of the system.

Strengthening Our Partnership with United Neighborhood Centers 1,587 Books Donated The Wright Center partnered with students from The Commonwealth Medical College (TCMC), United Neighborhood Centers and local businesses to bring the joy of reading to some of Lackawanna County’s youngest residents this summer.

The team collected 1,587 books and delivered them to the children at Skyview Community Park Apartments. Board member, Joe Ferrario (pictured below, far left) and The Ferrario Agency helped out as a drop off location.

Healthcare Access for Seniors A groundbreaking ceremony was held at the old West Pittston High School on Friday, April 10, and symbolized a new chapter for the 107-year-old building. It will be rehabilitated into a 22-unit affordable-living apartment complex for seniors, expected to open to occupants in late 2015. Kellen Kraky, Manager of Youth Services, was on site to participate in the groundbreaking (Pictured above, far left). The Wright Center plans to offer primary care services and care coordination to the residents.

Kicks for Kids Kickball Tournament The Wright Center’s team made a solid showing at the United Neighborhood Center’s Kicks for Kids Kickball Tournament on Saturday, June 13. Along with defeating opponents along the way, the team battled the blazing sun to make it to the quarter finals. This event raised enough funds to send 300 kids to camp this year.

In Brief: Over 200 people turned out to support our Purse Bingo held in May and more than $6,000 was raised to benefit The Wright Center Food Bank and the “Special Angel Fund” to assist patients with serious health issues. Gerri McAndrew and the entire Mid Valley Practice Auxiliary did an amazing job organizing the event, gathering all donations and encouraging such a spirit of camaraderie.

Thanks to our amazing volunteers and the Weinberg Food Pantry, we were able to serve 222 individuals (74 families, 79 children, 125 adults and 18 elderly) through the Scranton Clinic’s Food Pantry in May.

We recently received a letter from one of Dr. Vijaya Dendi’s patients at the VA. Dr. Dendi is a third year Internal Medicine Resident who joined The Wright Center because of the opportunity to care for diverse patient populations. This letter is a wonderful testimonial to the impact his compassion and competence as a doctor is making on his patients’ lives.

The American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine recently awarded two 2015 Research Grants to six A.T. Still University School of Osteopathic Medicine in Arizona (SOMA) faculty.

Dr. Lawrence LeBeau, Program Director in the National Network, and Dr. Christine Morgan, also of the National Network, were selected for “Assessing Competency in Family Medicine Residents Using the OMM Mini-CEX.”

Welcome

New Physicans/Faculty Members Dr. Bojana Milekic joins as faculty, focused on in-patient internal medicine. She will practice as an in-patient Hospitalist at Regional Hospital, as well as out-patient primary care at Scranton Counseling Center and Allied Services Integrated Health System.

Dr. Hrushik Amin will take a faculty leadership role as a fourth year Chief Resident, after having completed a three year residency with The Wright Center for Graduate Medical Education in June.

Dr. Amin will be practicing at the Wilkes-Barre VA Medical Center.

Dr. Christopher Minello, a native of Clarks Summit, joined The Wright Center for Primary Care’s Clarks Summit practice as a full time physician/faculty member. Read more about Dr. Minello on page 8.

Dr. Qasim Malik, also a graduate of The Wright Center for Graduate Medical Education’s residency program, has been hired as Associate Program Director for Institutional and Cultural Advancement.

TCMC Research Symposium Collaborative Research Projects to Improve Health and Medical Education in the Region The 6th Annual Spring Research Symposium was held at The Commonwealth Medical College (TCMC) on May 7 and 8.

This annual event highlighted the achievements of TCMC’s students, faculty, and community partners, like The Wright Center for Graduate Medical Education, who collaborated to implement meaningful research and quality improvement projects throughout northeast and north central Pennsylvania.

The symposium included three poster sessions to showcase the inter-disciplinary research conducted among faculty, staff, students and residents. Many Wright Center residents and faculty participated by conducting research to improve health and medical education in the region and by submitting posters to share their findings with others.

The research poster for “Increasing HPV Vaccination and Chlamydia Screening at The Wright Center: A Quality Improvement Project” was awarded second place at the symposium.

Congratulations to the team of Kyle Chapman, Michelle Fuentes, Michael Grimaldi, Paul Promadhattvedi, Viktoriya Wolfe and Dr. Alexandre Le. Dr. Linda Thomas-Hemak assisted in the research through advisory and mentorship; Tiffany Elkins, Senior MEDENT Application Specialist, supported the project through data collection.

Summer & Fall Visiting Professor Series The Wright Center for Graduate Medical Education has aligned with nationally-recognized leaders in the healthcare field to educate residents, medical staff and faculty on a variety of issues, including tactics for improved self-awareness, community-specific health needs assessments and motivational interviewing to develop awareness and sensitivity to real issues patients face today.

Sessions are open to medical professionals in the community.

Welcome

New Providers in Clarks Summit Christopher Minello, D.O., a native of Clarks Summit, joined The Wright Center for Primary Care’s Clarks Summit practice as a full time physician and faculty member in July. He completed his three-year residency with The Wright Center for Graduate Medical Education, and in his new position, he will have the privilege of teaching 21st century physicians and serving those within his home community.

He is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and is interested in the management of cardiovascular disease as well as diabetes. Dr. Minello is focused on making his patients’ health a priority and is currently engaged with multiple medical and non-medical community groups in the Scranton area.

He is an active member of his church, enjoys going to the gym, playing flag football and spending time with his family and friends. Dr. Minello is also an aviation enthusiast and flies RC aircrafts with the Waymart Wings at Kellachaw Airfield in South Canaan.

In my position as a faculty member, I hope to teach future physicians that sometimes you have to reach a little further and ask very specific questions to make sure your patients are engaged in their own wellness.” —Dr. Chris Minello

We’re also excited to welcome Joshua Braddell, CRNP, (Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner) to the Clarks Summit practice. Josh received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Scranton and comes to The Wright Center from Geisinger Community Health Center.

He spends most of his time at the Clarks Summit office and recently stepped up to help see patients in the Mid Valley practice during the newly expanded Sunday hours.

The Wright Center for Primary Care hosted its Wonderful Women Event on Thursday, May 14 at the Wright Center Mid Valley location. Guests had the opportunity to network with dynamic women in their community, participate in expressive painting, plant a pink flower in the newly-established “Garden of Hope” and win a variety of raffle prizes. Dr. Anne Halsey and Dr. Ernesto Jimenez from our Washington, DC site were recently featured in A.T. Still University’s iconnect newsletter. They also traveled to Capitol Hill with Brian Ebersole to meet with HRSA and members of Congress to share their story of the training opportunities the Teaching Health Center has provided them.

Final CRL Learning Session a Success 1

Community-based physicians and cardiologists, along with Wright Center Residents and Cardiology Fellows, collaborated with the American Medical Association on an 18-month, pilot project to improve timeliness and quality of primary care physician-to-specialist referrals by establishing accountability metrics and improving the transfer of information.

The final learning session, concluding the Closing the Referral Loop (CRL) collaborative, was held Thursday, June 4 at The Commonwealth Medical College (TCMC). Twelve pairs (or dyads), comprised of a primary care physician (PCP) and a cardiologist, along with their office staff, Residents and Cardiology Fellows, shared their progress, research and lessons learned while participating in this innovative project.

The CRL initiative aims to establish clarity of a PCP’s specific clinical question, ensure thoroughness of the Specialist’s answer and confirm the answer is received by the PCP in order to close the loop.

Connie Sixta, PhD, Independent Improvement Advisor, Sixta Consulting, and Courtney Dempsey, Clinical Innovation Specialist, led the event and discussion.

The number of referrals with documented answers from the Specialist increased from 50% to 75% and the number of referrals “closed” in a timely manner increased from 40% to 70% at completion of the first year.

Social Mission in Medical Education The Wright Center was Well-Represented at the Beyond Flexner Conference in New Mexico Dr. Linda Thomas-Hemak presented at the Beyond Flexner 2015 national conference on April 13, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The conference is focused on an important and often neglected frontier in medical education—social mission—and the initiatives in medical education to address health inequities.

Dr. Thomas-Hemak presented on the topic “Beyond the Walls: Community as Campus” and shared The Wright Center for Graduate Medical Education’s story of expansion as it grew within Northeastern Pennsylvania and evolved into the national graduate medical education residency network it is today. Second year National Network Family Medicine Resident, Dr. Ali Abdallah and Dr. Eleni O’Donovan, Local Program Director at the Washington, DC site, also attended the conference.

The Wright Center for Primary Care and Geisinger Health System provided free blood pressure screenings, tobacco cessation information and nutritional resources at the “Fit ‘N’ Fun” events hosted by Lackawanna County this summer. Our team was also featured on WNEP’s “Lecky Live” morning show bright and early on June 26 at McDade Park, Scranton.

Congratulations to Dr. Meaghan Ruddy on her selection as a member of the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM) Faculty for Tomorrow Task Force. This national initiative provides resources and training for new physician faculty and identifies young family medicine physicians with leadership potential.

Graduation, held on June 20 at the Hilton Scranton & Conference Center, marked the graduation of 22 Internal Medicine Teaching Health Center residents, six Allopathic Family Medicine residents, three Cardiology fellows and two Osteopathic Internal Medicine residents.

Three graduates joined The Wright Center’s cardiology fellowship program; two have accepted positions with CHS Wilkes-Barre General Hospital’s hospitalist group; one joined Geisinger Wyoming Valley as a hospitalist; and one joined Geisinger’s Cardiology Fellowship in Danville.

At graduation, Dr. Linda Thomas-Hemak excitedly announced Dr. Wasique Mirza, Medical Director at Scranton Primary Health Care Center, had accepted the position of Acting Program Director for the Internal Medicine Program. The Wright Center and Scranton Primary’s partnership represents a deliberate focus on strengthening safety net services in our region while developing competent, compassionate doctors committed to non-discriminatory, high quality and affordable care of all patients, regardless of ability or inability to pay.

Achievement awards were presented to interns, graduates and faculty. Dr. Michael Saleeb was honored with the Golden Stethoscope Award, given to the graduating senior who most serves as a role model for underclassmen. Dr. John Diakiw of Moses Taylor Hospital presented the award. Dr. Saleeb shared the moment with his father (pictured, lower left).

Existing Wright Center patients from any of our sites are encouraged to visit Mid Valley for weekend care. Appointments for pediatric and adult patients can be scheduled by calling 570-383-9934.
