The PPC Cement Laptop Bag puts a brand that is uniquely South African over your shoulder every time you walk out the door.

MAKING PROCESS: An unused Pretoria Portland Cement paper bag is the beginning of each piece. Each packet has three paper layers. We separate these layers, remove the top and third layer of the bag and fuse them with black cotton so that durability is never compromised. From there, you can treat it like any other fabric. We draw the pattern, cut it and stitch the bag together.

GIFT PACKAGING: Upon special request, gift bags with more information about the making process and characterisics of the bag can be purchased.

FEATURES: There are two sections and two pockets: carry your laptop cables (or Kindle) in one pocket and an iPhone or mouse in the other. A padded divider separates your laptop from any other papers or notes, and the entire inside of the bag is also padded to protect everything that you carry inside it. The bag closes with two magnets discreetly hidden on the flap.

PACKAGING: PPC Cement Laptop Bags purchased wholesale are sold with individual tags attached to the strap. These tags explain how the bag is made, step-by-step.

We source and collect used, over-run and/or reject paper packaging.

The process is lengthy by summed up we fuse the paper for strength and coat them with NANO liquid glass to make them water resistant.

MAKING PROCESS: When we make the PPC Cement Laptop Bags we use two of the three paper layers that make up the cement packaging. The third layer, saved from the dustbin, is used to make the Brown Paper iPad and Tablet Sleeves.

FEATURES: All the layers of paper are fused to cream cotton for strength.

The inside is lined with padded black brushed cotton to protect your ipad and/or tablet.

A pocket-sleeve is tucked under the flap, infront of the main pocket to give you place for cables, papers and/ or your stylus.

The sleeve closes with three magnets that cannot damange your ipad or tablet becuase of the type of memory that an ipad uses.

TREATMENT: We treat the bag with a Nano Liquid glass, which makes it water resistant.

GET CREATIVE: These plain natural sleeves are great because you can create your own surface design, or take notes on it when you cannot find a piece of paper.

MAKING PROCESS: South African Graphic Designers Aimee Lottering, Lauren Fowler and Daniel Ting Chong were commissioned to create three different surface designs.The Owl & The Pussy Cat design was created by Textile Designer Wendren Setzer.

These designs are screen printed onto recycled and rescued brown paper. The paper comes from a local packaging factory where paper reel ends are cut off according to the size required for bags to be printed. These ends are usually discarded, recycled or sold. In our case, they are used to make beautiful sleeves.

“Bicycles” by Aimee Lottering Aimee Lottering is a superb illustrator who believes that car-free transport as a form of living and traveling is a newfound form of freedom (especially in South Africa).

She also just loves bicycles….of all sorts. They are fun, quirky, sustainable and practical.

All elements of her designs showcase a diverse skills set: from conceptual and strategic thinking; typesetting and layout; as well as hand rendered and digital illustration.

“man in the moon” by Daniel Ting Chong Daniel Ting Chong is a designer fascinated by technology. This fun depiction of Outer Space - a smiling moon with text “lift off” that jumps out at you when you flip open the flap welcomes you to the wonderfully futuristic world of tablets.

“flying foxes� by Lauren Fowler Lauren Fowler loves foxes and plants and this all-over repeat is a combination of them both.

This was also her first pattern and hopefully not her last.

“owl & the pussy cat” by Wendren Setzer Wendren Setzer’s design is inspired by Edward Lear’s poem “The Owl & The Pussy Cat” first published in 1871. "The Owl and the Pussycat" poem features four animals – an owl, a cat, a pig, and a turkey – and tells the story of the love between the title characters who marry in the land "where the Bong-tree grows".

Designs can be such a powerful trigger to imagination and memory and the personal challenge Wendren set herself was to use geometric line to tell and remind you of a wonderful, light heated story.

Her favourite line from the poem is how “…they sailed away, for a year and a day, in a beautiful pea-green boat…”

“scarlet & Indigo moths� by Wendren Setzer This design started out as an exploration of line and symmetry by Wendren Setzer.

She combined the geometric qualities of spirographs and fractals found in nature to create a design that is softened by hand drawn ink lines. The shapes seems to radiate out, with moths scattered amongst them and colour making it kind of kaliedescopic.

The Wren Carry-All Bag lives up to its name in every situation. Whether you’re off to the beach, the store or just out for the day, this bag means you never have to leave anything behind when you walk out the door.

coffee carry-all bags MAKING PROCESS: Out of jute coffee sacks from fairtrade coffee and tea plantations. Using fused black cotton we reinforce the bag, giving it structure and durability. The handles of the bag are jute webbing edged with organic Hemp canvas.

FEATURES: When you open the bag, you’ll find a large hanging pocket – no more searching through your bag for your keys, cell phone or diary. They’re all in one place.

The fabric-covered board base gives the bag shape.

Don’t like it? You can just take it out.

The bag closes with a strong 55cm metal zip. If you want to make the bag smaller, you can use the antique brass press-studs on either side of the zip to adjust it.

coffee TRAVEL bags The Coffee Travel Bag will go wherever your air ticket takes you. Ethnically inspired, practical and well-travelled itself, it’s the ultimate grab-and-go holiday companion.

MAKING PROCESS: This piece is a combination of Fair Trade coffee burlap sacks and organic hemp canvas. The inside is lined with black medium-weight cotton (every now-and-then there will be a bag with a dark blue lining - just for fun). To make the bag extra strong, we’ve fused the burlap and hemp canvas with cotton fabric in places. Can’t have your things falling out mid-flight.

FEATURES: There are two large open pockets mean the contents of the bag will always be organized. There is also a 25cm waterproof zip pocket. Let’s just say that, if your shampoo leaks, your clothes aren’t going to know about it. The base of the bag is reinforced with a removable covered board base.

The bag closes with a two-way zip so you can easily lock it and open it fully when you arrive at your destination. Press studs on either side of the zip give you the option of clipping them down to make the bag a bit smaller. All metal fittings are brass.

The strap is long, adjustable and, thanks to the partial fabric covering, comfortable on your shoulder. If you prefer to carry the bag with two handles, all you have to do is unclip the strap.

Easy. The handles are lined with manilla rope and both the handles and strap are made of Jute webbing.

MAKING PROCESS: 100% environmentally friendly, the primary fabric is recycled Jute coffee sack from a FAIR TRADE coffee and tea plantation. We line the bags with organic hemp canvas.

FEATURES: There are 2 pockets inside this bag which are both 18x13cm / 7x5”. One is open and split to create to separate compartments; the other closes with a button hole. The bag closes with a 4cm/1.5” handmade wooden button.

Sling SIZE: The sling strap is 97cm / 38” – just the right length to wear it across your chest. Pretty convenient when you want to bicycle through city streets, we think. The shoulder strap is shorter - 64cm / 25”.

THE PATCH BAG MAKING PROCESS: Sometimes the most beautiful things are made out of a lot of smaller just-as-beautiful things.

Small pieces of antique linen are pieced together perfectly with carefully lined stitching.

FEATURES: Linen Patch Bag closes with a strong magnet with our signature laser-drawn Wren on the front.

The double stitched soft leather strap is adjustable with a buckle.Inside there are three pockets - two open ones the length of the bag and a small 10cm zipper. Lined with silk.

Coated with NANOtechnology to resist dirt and water. Machine Washable.

MAKING PROCESS: The Antique Linen Duffel Bag is made from heavy-duty antique linen fabric. This, like the bag, is hand made, the thread handspun, the weave handwoven - and with a gorgeous herringbone texture - and the colourful stripe naturally dyed, all over a 100 years ago.

Coated with nano technology (an eco-friendly coating) making it water and dirt resistant.The bag closes with a metal zip.

The Cotton Range King's Rice Bag

King's rice bag “Imagine a seamless cylindrical bag that will shape itself to whatever is placed inside it, a bag that will fold up into almost nothing when not in use, a bag that may be used over and over. This is the Liberian rice bag” and the inspiration for the KINGS RICE BAG.

BACKGROUND: During the 1960’s the Peace Corps arrived in Liberia and used the traditional rice bag that was made from raffia as a purse. Over time these bags became associated with them and was renamed the “Peace Bag”.

MAKING PROCESS: Used cotton rice packaging bags are collected from local spice shops. Paired with duck canvas (a heavy-duty cotton canvas) that has been dyed either yellow inspired by the rice spice Tumeric, or orange - a colour inspired by Jujube.

The original Liberian Peace Bag was cylindrical and seamless. Inspired to keep our design true to this symbolism of perfection and wholeness we have not cut, unpicked or changed the structure of the original rice packaging sack. We tucked in the bottom to give it more of a square base and turned over the top edges. That’s it.

FEATURES: Hang it long from your shoulder by the handles, or folded-over across your chest with the adjustable long strap.

Closes with a 40cm zip.

Two interior pockets: one small and one large that closes with two pres studs.

SIZE: Height is 38cm/just over 15” Width is 22cm/8.7”

Other Map Envelopes

MAP ENVELOPES These envelopes are made using old maps of Southern Africa, printed by the Directorate of Mapping and Survey. Every 5 years new maps are printed and the old ones are discarded, or as they now are, collected by ‘the WREN design’.

MAKING PROCESS: Made using the left over paper from making the “Gift Map Bags”.
