Madeira Tees Up Golfing Boost Courses Madeira has experienced a boost in golf numbers during the first four months of 2019, with the two ‘mainland’ courses experiencing almost double-digit growth.

number of golf rounds has increased significantly. Also on the up is Madeira’s overall tourism revenue which showed almost two per cent growth in 2018.

Palheiro Golf has enjoyed 9.4 per cent growth on the same period last year, while Santo da Serra is not far behind with an increase of 8.4 per cent.

The news is a boost for the archipelago’s tourism industry and its agency Discover Madeira, which has been actively targeting golfers with its marketing.

Tourism officials believe the archipelago’s mild climate – which makes Madeira an ideal all-year-round destination – and short-haul journey time from Europe is attracting golfers who might previously have travelled further afield for their golf.

A spokesman for Discover Madeira said: “This is good news for the tourism sector on Madeira and is something we will be looking to build upon in 2019. We are particularly encouraged by the number of new visitors coming to the archipelago to play golf on our three excellent courses.

Visitor numbers to the island are also up overall, but only slightly, whereas the

“Madeira is an ideal year-round golf destination and, it would appear, people are beginning to appreciate that.” The par-72, 6,656-yard (6,086m) course at Palheiro Golf – designed by Robinson – is situated within the magnificent Palheiro Estate, which is more than 200 years old. At nearly 1,640ft above sea level, the location enjoys dramatic views of Madeira’s mountainous skyline and the ocean, as well as – nestling below, just 10 minutes away – the island’s capital, Funchal. The original course at Santo da Serra, dating from 1937, was redesigned in 1991 by Robert Trent Jones Snr, who created a new and spectacular 27-hole

The third and fourth holes of the Machico course are regarded as the signature holes, sitting atop cliffs more than 2,200ft above sea level, providing views of the bay of Machico, where Portuguese navigators first landed in 1419. The southern route – a US-style layout – is dotted with lakes, requiring a long and precise game; while the northern route is atop fantastic cliffs, near the stunning beach of the same name. and a unique eco-system. It is one of the only places on the planet where banana trees grow next to vineyards. In 1999 the archipelago was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site and five areas have been declared nature reserves. The Madeira Nature Reserve covers a substantial two-thirds of the main island, where development is prohibited.

Slieve Russell Announced As PGA National Ireland Courses Slieve Russell Hotel, Golf & Country Club has become one of only a handful of facilities around the world to be endorsed by The PGA. Situated in the glorious setting of Ballyconnell in County Cavan, Slieve Russell has joined the association’s seven other branded resorts as ‘PGA National Ireland’. The hotel provides luxury accommodation in a tranquil setting

amongst stunning lakes and scenery. The venue also offers a haven of comfort and relaxation with its world-class spa, a state-of-the-art conference centre and a range of indoor and outdoor leisure activities. Slieve Russell’s acclaimed 18-hole championship course has hosted two European Tour events and was home to the Irish PGA Championship in 1996. In addition, the venue also stages an annual PGA pro-am, with the popular

event featuring a collective prize fund of €1.2million since it was first held in 1997 –the highest paid PGA pro-am tournament in Ireland. Designed by Paddy Merrigan, the natural landscape of West Cavan provides a stunning backdrop to what many describe as one of the finest parkland courses in Ireland. It is accompanied by a nine-hole par-three academy course and an adventure golf facility to inspire the next generation of young players.

Tony Walker, general manager at Slieve Russell Hotel, Golf & Country Club, said: “The golf and leisure facilities that we have at Slieve Russell are among the best in the country, and rebranding as PGA National Ireland will further enhance our position at the forefront of Irish golf. “These are exciting times for us and this new partnership with not only help to improve our profile domestically, but also to open up many new promotional opportunities abroad.” All PGA-branded facilities benefit from the direct use of The PGA brand and its associated value built up over the last century.

Complementing the golf course is a 222-bedroom, four-star hotel; an awardwinning Ciuin Spa; and an outstanding golf academy where resident head PGA professional Gordon Smyth and his team are available with expert tuition, stateof-the-art video analysis and training programmes to help golfers of all abilities achieve their goals.

PGA Play-Offs Return To PGA National Turkey Events The status of PGA National Turkey Antalya Golf Club’s acclaimed PGA Sultan golf course has received a glowing new endorsement after being selected to host the prestigious PGA Play-Offs for the second year running. The 54-hole tournament, the climax to the 2019 season, will return to Turkey’s premier golf resort from November 27-29, with an elite field competing for a total prize fund of £25,000.

Somerset’s David Dixon, from Enmore Park Golf Club, produced a sensational eight-under-par round of 63 on the final day to win the coveted title in 2018, and this year’s line-up will again face the challenge of overcoming PGA National Turkey’s highly-regarded PGA Sultan course. Opened in 2003, the par-71 layout has hosted numerous high-profile tournaments including the 2012 Turkish Airlines World Golf Final, which featured the likes of Tiger Woods, Rory

McIlroy and eventual winner Justin Rose. Measuring 6,477m from the back tees, players must negotiate a number of hazards to score well on the narrow, challenging layout, including no fewer than 12 lakes and 122 bunkers. The PGA Play-Offs were launched in 2006 and have become a popular finale to the season where top PGA professionals compete for European and Challenge Tour starts for the following season, as well as a place in the Great Britain & Ireland PGA Cup team.

Michael Jones, director of golf at PGA National Turkey Antalya Golf Club, said: “It’s a great honour and privilege for the resort to host the PGA Play-Offs for the second year in a row, and we’re confident that PGA Sultan will provide a worthy test for the field. “The feedback that we continually get from both professionals and amateurs is that it has never been in better condition. It is widely acknowledged to be the best course in the Belek area, with a design that is tough but also very fair, and the tournament will be another opportunity for us to showcase the outstanding facilities that we have at the resort – both on and off the golf course.” Tristan Crew MBE, PGA executive director – member services, added: “The

176-room luxury five-star Kempinski Hotel The Dome and the five-star, 442-room, Sirene Belek Hotel, which underwent a €2m room refurbishment programme last winter.

“So it’s fitting the play-offs are contested on the challenging course at a top class venue – the PGA Sultan at PGA National Turkey Antalya Golf Club.

Complementing the layouts are excellent practice facilities including a 300-metre driving range and academy, while the resort is one of a select group of courses to receive the official endorsement of The Professional Golfers’ Association.

“Last year’s tournament was a resounding success, with the players enjoying exceptional golf and hospitality. The PGA is therefore delighted to be returning in 2019.” Just a 25-minute drive from Antalya, PGA National Turkey Antalya Golf Club’s impressive facilities include two 18-hole golf courses and two luxury hotels – the

Away from the fairways, hotel guests can enjoy access to numerous other sports and leisure facilities including tennis, football, various watersports, kids’ clubs, fabulous pier and two luxury spas, while the resort also offers an array of opulent culinary experiences at a variety of bars and restaurants.

courses - Tandridge golf club

Renowned Surrey Club Offers Great Opportunity To Learn Golf Courses A Surrey golf club is anticipating a flurry of beginners to join after cutting significantly its annual academy membership fee. Tandridge GC, in Oxted, has reduced its academy membership fee by nearly 40 per cent, from £750 to £475, as it looks to encourage more people - particularly ladies and girls - into the sport. Club secretary Andrew Tanner admits it is a move some may consider ‘long overdue’. He explained: “We have an excellent coaching staff here at Tandridge, in PGA pro Chris Evans and his team, but - as a private members club - historically we’ve probably been guilty of under-utilising their talents. “We’ve never actively promoted academy membership here as an entry point to the sport in the local community but that is changing - and it is a change that many of us feel is long overdue. “The chances of a beginner stepping out confidently onto the course in the early days are slim, so there’s little point in factoring into the membership fee a course-use charge. The fee should act as an incentive for beginners to take advantage of the excellent facilities we have on offer - not a barrier.”

Academy membership entitles the individual to 10 individual range lessons of 40 minutes each, six one-hour group lessons, and unlimited free use of the driving range - with balls - for the duration of the membership, ensuring that, weather permitting, there should never be any deterrent to practise. Tanner added: “We will also maintain the fee structure for subsequent years, so newcomers don’t need to worry if they’re making slower progress than they thought they would. Academy members will also be mentored as they undergo the process of improving and getting their first handicap. “This is one more step we are taking in making Tandridge GC more of a community asset. It remains a private members club, but it is now a private members club for the 21st century.” Evans, an Advanced PGA professional, is a former winner of the Welsh Professional Championship and represented Wales in the Johnnie Walker European Team Championship. Until moving to Tandridge in 1998, he was head pro at the former Open Championship venue at Prince’s GC, Kent. He has led the team at Tandridge for more than 20 years and said: “I am

Website: www.tandridgegolfclub.com

delighted and very excited by the prospect of getting more players into the game and, ultimately, seeing them progress to become members of a wonderful golf club right on their doorstep. “Having top-level PGA instruction, along with free unlimited practice, should be a catalyst for academy members to flourish and reach a decent playing standard. We are really looking forward to the challenge of helping more people get into golf.” The delightful Tandridge course, near Oxted, was designed by the legendary Harry Colt and affords spectacular views of the Surrey North Downs and the High Weald, with the front nine running along relatively gentle land and the back nine sited in more rolling and dramatic terrain. Visitors to Tandridge may play golf by paying a green fee on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, or any day from 4.30pm, with prices from £40. To enquire about academy membership at Tandridge GC simply call assistant secretary Jane Edwards, on 01883 712274, or email asst.sec@ tandridgegolfclub.com. The pro shop is open seven days a week and the team is on hand to answer any questions. Call them on 01883 713701.

courses - Club de Golf Alcanada

Alcanada Revamp Captured On Camera Courses Club de Golf Alcanada’s winter revamp can now be seen in all its glory with the launch of a new video. An extensive €700,000 renovation took place over the winter to replace all 18 greens, upgrade the irrigation, renew all sand in the bunkers and various other improvements at the popular club in Mallorca.

The course reopened on March 1 and the new greens have since earned rave reviews, which has taken an alreadyimpressive course to a whole new level. The full three-minute video explains the ambitions of the project, while it also contains footage of the works as they took place, the pivotal figures involved in the process – and, of course, the

customary stunning views across the Bay of Alcudia with some spectacular drone photography. Alcanada’s director of golf, Kristoff Both, said: “We can all look back on the work that was undertaken at Alcanada with a great deal of pride and now it’s fantastic to be able to show that transformation to everyone.”

Fleet-Footed Foxhills Leads The Speedgolf Charge Events Foxhills Club & Resort has taken up the baton and is ready to blaze the trail as the host venue of the 2019 British Open Speedgolf Championships. The growing sport, which combines the number of shots with the time it takes to complete the round for a final score, will see competitors pick up the pace round the Longcross course on Sunday, July 28 as the contenders battle it out for the titles. Champions will be crowned in the elite, amateur and women’s categories with Chris Benians, determined to outpace his rivals and defend his men’s title after claiming the honours at Piltdown Golf Club last year.

His round of 80, completed in a remarkable 43 minutes and 41 seconds, gave him the winning speedgolf total of 123:41, while ladies champion, Liz McKinnon, shot 76 in 50:41 for a speedgolf score of 126:41. But with world speedgolf champion – Finland’s Mikko Rantanen – in the field alongside the best of New Zealand, France, Germany and USA, the home contingent face a stern challenge to stay up with the pace-setters. Chris Fitt, director of golf and leisure at Foxhills, said: “At Foxhills, we like to embrace the modern and exciting developments throughout the game and speedgolf is definitely a growing sport in its own right.

“It’s a fun and exciting take on the sport but these are serious athletes and exceptional golfers. It will be amazing to see some of the best in the world of speedgolf tackle our Longcross course.” Pam Painter, co-founder of British Speedgolf, said: “Speedgolf introduces a greater fitness element to golf and many have found it enhances their golf performance, particularly those with a tendency to over-think their game or take too many practice swings.” For more details about Speedgolf and how to register to compete at this year’s Championship event, visit britishspeedgolf.co.uk.

BIRAL

Some Facts about Lightning... and why you need a warning! Biral There are a few “old-wives-tales” and common misconceptions regarding lightning and thunderstorms which need to be changed in order to keep everyone as safe as possible under these circumstances, especially when you find yourselves out on the course as a storm approaches. The first one is: “that thunder sounds a long way off; we’ll be fine for a while yet”.

are electrocuted by the very strong currents flowing in the ground close to the strike location, which travels through their body from one foot to another. Alternatively, those too close to an object which is struck will receive a shock from a “flash-over” from the object which was struck, such as a tree. This can occur several metres from the object itself and is one of the reasons why you should never (ever) shelter under any tall object (including trees!).

A lightning bolt often exceeds 6 miles (10 km) in length and rarely comes vertically to earth. So if lightning occurs within this distance, the next flash may well be to where you are standing. You cannot usually hear the thunder if the lightning is over 6 miles away, so you often have no audible warning at all.

It is also a fact that nearby lightning occurring inside the thunder cloud during the day can be unseen, even by trained meteorological observers. Unfortunately, humans are rather poor thunderstorm detectors so should definitely not be relied upon for consistent, early warnings!

The safest places to shelter during a thunder storm are in a properly grounded building, or a fully-enclosed metal vehicle. Ungrounded huts, wooden sheds, under trees, rain shelters or canopies offer no protection and can actually be very dangerous places during a thunderstorm.

The next is: “it hasn’t started to rain yet, so the storm is not overhead; we’ll be fine”

The only reliable and consistent way of issuing a lightning warning is with a dedicated lightning detection system. About 90% of thunderstorms are already producing lightning by the time they are within 12 miles (20 km), so a professional, real-time lightning warning system should provide adequate notice of an approaching storm. However, in the case of the remaining 10%, the first flash will occur nearby or overhead – which is (of course) the most dangerous. Therefore, it is important not to rely on systems which only detect lightning as these cannot provide any advanced warning of the threat of overhead lightning and its implicit danger!

The next one is: “let us shelter under that tree until the storm has passed; we’ll be fine” Most people killed or injured by lightning are not struck by lightning directly. Instead, many people struck outside

To ensure the best chance of a thunderstorm threat warning, the detector should be able to alert for both distant lightning and the presence of a strong electric field at your location. This strong electric field is indicative of a lightning threat developing overhead – so potentially a very serious situation and one to take immediate action over. The innovative new BTD-200 lightning warning system from Biral is able to do both. It detects distant lightning (up to 22miles away) as well as warning about an overhead strong electric field, even if there is no lightning being produced.

The next is: “I haven’t seen any lightning yet, so it must be a way off; we’ll be fine”

Whilst the highest concentration of flashes are often close to the areas of most intense hail or rainfall, lightning can strike the ground with or without rain falling at your location, so do not be fooled into thinking you are any less at risk if it is (or is not) raining!

Ideally, what is required is a reliable thunderstorm detecting system which gives adequate warning time to prepare before the storm moves overhead and one which is also able to warn of the threat posed by potential overhead lighting before it has begun.

WEBSITE: www.biral.com

The Lightning Works software will then alert the staff and managers to these threats, in real time, allowing them to review and manage the situation and to warn the members, the public and their own staff to the potential danger. It can also activate warning sounders automatically if required. The BTD-200 lightning warning system really is the next generation of lightning detection and warning system. It has been developed from proven professional technology currently used world-wide at airports and by national meteorological organisations.

events - Pont Royal

Pont Royal Hopps Into Action For Second Challenge Tour Visit Events The second Hopps Open de Provence will return to the renowned Seve Ballesteros-designed golf course at Golf International Pont Royal, Provence, in September, as the European Challenge Tour’s high-flyers look to secure the final points to guarantee a place on the 2020 European Tour.

The top 15 golfers on the ranking at the end of the season automatically earn a Tour card, and one of last year’s successful group David Law - who finished tied sixth at Pont Royal last year - has already stood atop the European Tour winner’s podium, at the ISPS Handa Vic Open, in Australia, in February.

The 2018 Hopps Open de Provence was hailed by the players for its support as it provided one of the largest crowds of the year on the tour. It was the last French event of the season and golf fans in the region flocked to the course to witness the dramatic finale which saw Langasque triumph by three shots.

The inaugural event, in 2018, was won last year by 24-year-old Frenchman Romain Langasque, who subsequently won a place on this year’s European Tour through qualifying school, despite finishing 19th on the Challenge Tour ranking.

And Scotland’s Robert MacIntyre, who came so close to winning the recent British Masters, failed even to make the cut at Pont Royal, last year, highlighting the quality of both the golf and the course.

Once again, the event at Pont Royal will be the last visit to France made by the Challenge Tour in 2019, so both the tension and the crowd will be considerable.

Pont Royal’s director of golf, Jérome Lauredi, explained: “Last year’s tournament was a huge success with some tremendous golf and large crowds. We are delighted the event is able to return and it is our intention to grow it year on year in terms of spectators and commercial support. But entry will remain free for spectators who will also be able to enjoy the other facilities on the domaine.”
