Load Out: All sale cattle will be loaded out at the conclusion of the sale.

Delivery: We offer free delivery on bulls within 250 miles, provided the buyer is able to make arrangements to receive bull when delivery is made to your area, usually within a few weeks of the sale. Due to fuel costs and time restraints, we may consolidate trips. If you are unable to receive bulls when delivery is scheduled to your area, you need to make arrangements to pick up your bull at the farm within two weeks of sale date. Each animal will be at purchaser’s own risk as soon as sold. Bulls will be cared for free of charge for two weeks following the sale for those who will be picking up.

Liability: All persons who attend this sale do so at their own risk. BRIARWOOD’S PROMISE OF EXCELLENCE

All bulls will have performance information, including BW, WW and YW. Ultrasound information includes back fat, REA and IMF.

All the breeding age bulls have passed a breeding soundness exam and are fertile to the best of our knowledge at the time of sale.

We will provide a first breeding season (the 90-day period immediately following turn out) guarantee on all yearling and older bulls in this sale.

The guarantee is specifically for functional fertility. It is not a substitute or replacement for poor management. Buyer assumes all risks for injury due to running bulls together or management decisions outside of our genetic control. For the guarantee to apply, we ask that you contact us as soon as a condition is observed, and before the animal is sold. We will work with you to determine the best course of action and reserve the right on a case by case situation to determine whether the animal is returned or sold for slaughter. We will attempt to provide a suitable replacement. If one cannot be provided, we will issue a credit to be used in a future sale for the full purchase price less the salvage value of the animal.

This guarantee is in addition to the standard Terms and Conditions of the American Angus Association, which also apply. This is not a life insurance policy. We will not replace a dead animal if it is killed or dies for any reason.

Retained Semen Interest: Briarwood Angus Farms is retaining 1/3 Semen Interest on all bulls. As the buyer, you maintain full ownership and control and 100% of salvage value of the bull. We simply reserve the right to a share of semen sales revenue from the bull, if at some time in the future, semen sales become a possibility.

It is unlikely that large amounts of semen will be sold from many bulls. However, bulls are often determined worthy later in life, after proving themselves in the breeding pasture. It is for this reason that we keep a semen interest on all of the bulls sold in our production sale. Even bulls sold to commercial herds may become popular in time, as more carcass data is collected on their calves.

If you purchase a bull that we retain an interest in and you choose to collect from that bull as an “insurance policy” for your own use, that semen is 100% yours. Briarwood Angus Farms may also wish to collect semen from the bull, either for in-herd use or to build a jointly owned semen bank for sale purposes.

If you are not interested in collecting semen on the bull, Briarwood Angus Farms has the right to collect the bull at their own expense and for their own use. Semen collection will be arranged at the convenience of the owner in possession of the bull.

Manager Dave Warfield's grandson Luke went into training with the branding iron over Thanksgiving weekend. Freeze branding has benefits over hot-iron branding, including the absence of scar formation, as cryogenic temperatures do not permanently destroy all layers of an animal’s skin. It is also less painful. And...it’s safer for barn kids to get in on the action.

Honestly, we couldn’t be more blessed than to have a Ranch Manger like David Warfield working at Briarwood Angus. His commitment and expertise are hands-down the reason we continue to see our herd in such amazing condition, and our genetics continually advancing. We celebrated in June the milestone of David’s 20th year with Briarwood. Regrettably, this year, our other top-notch cowboy, Robert Fleischer had to leave us. All those cows he’s AI’d over the years finally took its toll, making shoulder surgery a necessity. His boots will be hard to fill.

Dr. Long’s granddaughter Moorea Long, continues to amass honors for her raw talent and perfected skills in the classroom and on the field. On the Dean’s Academic Honor List for six semesters and carrying a 3.86 Cumulative GPA, Moorea is a graduate student at Baylor University in Waco, Tx., where she is pursuing a master’s degree in Sport Management. En route to her professional goal, she’s winning contests and establishing credibility through her many accomplishments.

Birth Traits

CED - A higher number, more calving ease BW - A lower number, a smaller calf Act. BW - Ratioed and incorporated into the EPD

The Angus breed has done an exceptional job of achieving high CED and low BW EPD values, largely due to highly heritable shorter gestation lengths. While moderate shifts have proven quite beneficial for live calf delivery, the pendulum swing to extremes can prove detrimental. Calves too small at birth may lack vigor and be shackled with the burden of making up the weight by weaning. We have to look at not just birth weight, but also the mothering ability of the cow line and measure the vigor of a sire’s progeny to find a healthy balance.

Briarwood Angus Farms believes that bulls for use on heifers should be based on CED of 6+ or greater and BW being +2 or less. We also take into consideration the birth weight history of the bull’s mother and cow family.

In the pursuit of ever increasing WWs and YWs, extreme pairings run the risk of a big and inefficient herd. Briarwood Angus Farms instead shoots for moderate females who can efficiently provide ample milk and sires who produce progeny that perform in the feedlot and hit ideal weight ranges for the rail. It is possible to control cow size and thus control herd costs and still get calves that weigh heavy on the scales with Briarwood’s genetics.

Carcass Traits

CW - Expressed in pounds is a predictor of a sire’s progeny’s hot carcass weight

MARB - Expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny

RE - Expressed in square inches as a predictor of difference in the ribeye area of a sire’s progeny

Maternal Traits

CEM - Difference in percentage of unassisted births in a bull’s daughters as first-calf heifers. Higher

number is more favorable.

MILK - Predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk in his daughters; it is part of a calf’s WW attributed to milk and mothering ability

DOC - Predictor of temperament and behavior of a sire’s progeny

It’s easy to overlook the CEM in your hunt for a herd sire. However, the less stress placed on a firstcalf heifer because she handles calving unassisted impacts her desire and confidence to mother better and actually influences her ability to recycle sooner. That translates into happier cows and females that stay in production longer, and it’s a major economic factor in heifer development. You’ll notice that the majority of Briarwood’s genetics possess excellent Milk EPDs. We have not singly pursued this trait; it has developed naturally so that our cows milk enough to raise a big calf and not so much that it becomes a liability to reproduction and cow maintenance. Let’s face it, a cow that does her job early in a calf’s life establishes the foundation for that calf’s whole potential. As for Docility, a gentle herd is not only pleasant for handling, it’s good for business. Higher levels of docility can improve conception rates in A.I. programs and improve performance in the feedlot.

Value Indexes

$Value Indexes - Assesses multi-trait selection, expressed in dollars per head to assist beef producers with a simplistic genetic selection indicator. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform on average.

$M - Predicts profitability differences in progeny due to genetics from conception to weaning. Increased selection pressure on $M aims to decrease overall mature cow size and improve foot structure and fertility while maintaining weaning weights consistent with today’s production.

$W - The expected difference in future progeny performance for pre-weaning. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk and mature cow size.

$G - The expected average difference in future progeny performance for carcass grid merit compared to progeny of other sires.

$B - The expected average difference in future progeny performance for post-weaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires. $B does not include any prediction of fertility, maternal value or stayability in cow herd. It is a terminal post weaning and end product economic value.

$C - Includes all traits that make up both $M and $B with the objective that commercial producers will replace 20% of their breeding females per year with replacement heifers retained within their own herd. Remaining cull steer and heifer progeny are assumed to be sent to the feedlot where the producers sell them on a quality-based carcass merit grid.

$4400 in Prize Money to MSF Angus Youth

Angus rose to the top in the 2022 Missouri State Fair Carcass Contest, representing six of the top eight steers in the Hotel/Restaurant Division, with five Prime and one High Choice. Angus took the Championship title in the On-foot Carcass Show. Yet another Angus became Reserve Champion Over-All. Dr. Curtis W. Long of Briarwood Angus Farms awarded engraved championship insulated cups to top exhibitors of the 2022 MSF Angus Steer Carcass Contest. Winners at the fair will also receive monetary awards from Dr. Long and the Missour Angus Association during the 2023 MAA Annual Banquet in February. At the end of the week, it was Luke Warfield of Butler, Mo., whose Briarwood Angus steer finished impressively, according to judge Teagan Schnurbusch, Black Hawk Community College. Briarwood Exceed 1054, with a live weight of 1,360 lbs., dressed at 60.15% to render a hanging weight of 818 lbs. The ribeye area measured 14.2” and Warfield’s steer graded Prime with YG 2.17. Warfield received $500 for his Grand Champion Angus Carcass win, plus an additional $500 for winning the Reserve Champion Over-All Missouri State Fair Carcass Show, and took home another trophy for Reserve Championship for the Quality Hotel-Restaurant Division On-Rail.
