miles, provided the buyer is able to make arrangements to receive bull when delivery is made to your area, usually within a few weeks of the sale. Due to fuel costs and time restraints, we may consolidate trips. If you are unable to receive bulls when delivery is scheduled to your area, you need to make arrangements to pick up your bull at the farm within two weeks of sale date. Each animal will be at purchaser’s own risk as soon as sold. Bulls will be cared for free of charge for two weeks following the sale should you have to pick them up.

Retained Semen Interest: Briarwood Angus Farms is retaining 1/3 Semen Interest on all bulls. As the buyer, you maintain full ownership and control and 100% of salvage value of the bull. We simply reserve the right to a share of semen sales revenue from the bull, if at some time in the future, semen sales becomes a possibility.
BRIARWOOD’S PROMISE OF EXCELLENCE All bulls are DNA tested
It is unlikely that large amounts of semen will be sold from many bulls. However, bulls are often discovered later in life, after proving themselves in the breeding pasture. It is for this reason that we keep a semen interest on all of the bulls sold in our production sale. Even bulls sold to commercial herds may become popular in time, as more carcass data is collected on their calves.
All the breeding age bulls have passed a breeding soundness exam and are fertile to the best of our knowledge at the time of sale. We will provide a first breeding season (the 90-day period immediately following turn out) guarantee on all yearling and older bulls in this sale.
If you purchase a bull that we retain an interest in and you choose to collect from that bull as an “insurance policy” for your own use, that semen is 100% yours. Briarwood Angus Farms may also wish to collect semen from the bull, either for in-herd use or to build a jointly owned semen bank for sale purposes.
The guarantee is specifically for functional fertility.It is not a substitute or replacement for poor management. Buyer assumes all risks for injury due to running bulls together or management decisions outside of our genetic control. For the guarantee to apply, we ask that you contact us as soon as a condition is observed, and before the animal is sold. We will work with you to determine the best course of action and reserve the right on a case by case situation to determine whether the animal is returned or sold for slaughter. We will attempt to provide a suitable replacement. If one cannot be provided, we will issue a credit to be used in a future sale for the full purchase price less the salvage value of the animal.
If you are not interested in collecting semen on the bull, Briarwood Angus Farms has the right to collect the bull at their own expense and for their own use. Semen collection will be arranged at the convenience of the owner in possession of the bull.
This guarantee is in addition to the standard Terms and Conditions of the American Angus Association, which also apply. This is not a life insurance policy. We will not replace a dead animal if it is killed or dies for any reason.

CED - A higher number, more calving ease BW - A lower number, a smaller calf Act. BW - Ratioed and incorporated into the EPD The Angus breed has done an exceptional job of achieving high CED and low BW EPD values, largely due to highly heritable shorter gestation lengths. While moderate shifts have proven quite beneficial for live calf delivery, the pendulum swing to extremes can prove detrimental. Calves too small at birth may lack vigor and be shackled with the burden of making up the weight by weaning. We have to look at not just birth weight, but also the mothering ability of the cow line and measure the vigor of a sire’s progeny to find a healthy balance. Briarwood Angus Farms believes that bulls for use on heifers should be based on CED of 6+ or greater and BW being +2 or less. We also take into consideration the birth weight history of the bull’s mother and cow family.
Performance Traits
Whether you’ve been in the cattle business for decades or are brand new in the industry, there’s a learning curve to looking over all of those EPDs. Our goal is to simplify that process and provide the essentials for making sound selection choices. Explanations of key areas on these two pages should answer many of your questions and instill a confidence that you can trust Briarwood Angus Farms is utilizing such tools in every breeding decision.
205 wt. - Weight adjusted for age of dam to 205 days; ratioed in contemporary group and incorporated into WW EPD 365 wt. - Weight adjusted to 365 days; ratioed and incorporated into YW EPD In the pursuit of ever increasing WWs and YWs, extreme pairings run the risk of a big and inefficient herd. Briarwood Angus Farms instead shoots for moderate females who can efficiently provide ample milk and sires who produce progeny that perform in the feedlot and hit ideal weight ranges for the rail. It is possible to control cow size and thus control herd costs and still get calves that weigh heavy on the scales with Briarwood’s genetics.
Carcass Traits
CW - Expressed in pounds is a predictor of a sire’s progeny’s hot carcass weight MARB - Expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny RE - Expressed in square inches as a predictor of difference in the ribeye area of a sire’s progeny Before it was trendy, Briarwood was focusing on the end product. Maternal Traits CEM - Difference in percentage of unassisted births in a bull’s daughters as first-calf heifers. Higher number is more favorable. MILK - Predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk in his daughters; it is part of a calf’s WW attributed to milk and mothering ability DOC - Predictor of temperament and behavior of a sire’s progeny It’s easy to overlook the CEM in your hunt for a herd sire. However, the less stress placed on a firstcalf heifer because she handles calving unassisted impacts her desire and confidence to mother better and actually influences her ability to recycle sooner. That translates into happier cows and females that stay in production longer, and it’s a major economic factor in heifer development. You’ll notice that the majority of Briarwood’s genetics possess excellent Milk EPDs. We have not singly pursued this trait; it has developed naturally so that our cows milk enough to raise a big calf and not so much that it becomes a liability to reproduction and cow maintenance. Let’s face it, a cow that does her job early in a calf’s life establishes the foundation for that calf’s whole potential. As for Docility, a gentle herd is not only pleasant for handling, it’s good for business. Higher levels of docility can improve conception rates in A.I. programs and improve performance in the feedlot.
Value Indexes $Value Indexes - Assesses multi-trait selection, expressed in dollars per head to assist beef producers with a simplistic genetic selection indicator. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform on average. $M - Predicts profitability differences in progeny due to genetics from conception to weaning. Increased selection pressure on $M aims to decrease overall mature cow size and improve foot structure and fertility while maintaining weaning weights consistent with today’s production. $W - The expected difference in future progeny performance for pre-weaning. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk and mature cow size. $G - The expected average difference in future progeny performance for carcass grid merit compared to progeny of other sires. $B - The expected average difference in future progeny performance for post-weaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires. $B does not include any prediction of fertility, maternal value or stayability in cow herd. It is a terminal post weaning and end product economic value. $C - Includes all traits that make up both $M and $B with the objective that commercial producers will replace 20% of their breeding females per year with replacement heifers retained within their own herd. Remaining cull steer and heifer progeny are assumed to be sent to the feedlot where the producers sell them on a quality-based carcass merit grid.

Congratulations to these top exhibitors of the 2021 Missouri State Fair Angus Steer Contest. Briarwood Angus Farms continues to award winners at the fair with keepsakes to celebrate their accomplishments and monetary awards to reward their real-world understanding of the beef cattle business with their participation. Samuel Jordan of Andrew County was selected 4-H Champion Angus Steer and Faith Williams of Gasconade County was named 4-H Reserve Champion Angus Steer. In the FFA show, Olivia Gerloff of Owensville FFA took the Championship and Alexis Borgstadt earned Reserve. Each champion and reserve champion will receive cash prizes of $300 and $200, respectively, to be presented in February. Jordan also won the Grand Champion Angus Carcass. Along with the title , he won an engraved cup and $500! His 1,375 pound steer dressed at 777 pounds, graded Choice with a yield grade of 2.21, and a 14.2” Rib Eye Area. Jordan was also the Reserve Champion Over-All MSF Carcass. For that achievement, he earned an additional $500 from sponsor Briarwood Angus Farms. Peyson Larrick of Shelby County, won Reserve Champion Angus Carcass in the carcass show. The winner of $300, his steer weighed 1,275 and dressed at 787 pounds, graded Choice and had a yield grade 2.97, with a 13.8” REA. Three participants in the Carcass and 4-H or FFA shows included Samuel Jordan, Savannah, MO; Peyson Larrick, Shelbina, Mo.; and Alexis Borgstadt, Concordia, Mo. Each Angus youth exhibitor will be awarded $200 in February for participating in both contests.

I used to milk cows, but we quit milking back in ‘17 and started using Briarwood bulls on our Holsteins to faze out the dairy. I would keep heifers out of them and we started building our beef herd of half Angus and half Holstein. Each year, we would breed to Angus to get more of the Holstein out. The cross has worked well with dairy providing plenty of milk and with Briarwood Angus putting the pounds of beef on. We’ve been trying to buy bulls that focus on carcass and especially ribeye area, speeding up our efforts toward better beef. I’ve known Doc all my life. He delivered me, he delivered my wife and both of our kids. He’s a good friend. We like to help local people as much as we can, but there’s more to it than that. Briarwood does all the work for me by using A.I sires and keeping excellent records. I just go up there and say, “Hey, what would work best for me?” Basically all of their bulls will work for me, but I need to know what would be the best follow-up to what I used last round. David Warfield is a great herd manager. He knows genetics. They are in the businesses, and they are up on the data on what’s out there and what bulls to use and paying attention to what to look for. They’re not just selling bulls. They are trying to help people make money with bulls and cows they are selling. If you are randomly buying from this guy and that guy, you don’t know what you’re buying or if going backward or forwards in your program. And Doc and Dave stand behind their bulls. If you have any problems, they’ll make it right. We’ve bought females over the years too. A couple of years ago, we bought two cows and a heifer calf. My son showed the heifer at the Bates County Fair. Just recently, she calved and we registered her heifer in Hayden’s name. Briarwood is starting him out with a small herd. They always say we should make the next generation better and leave it better for them than we found it ourselves. Hayden is getting a jump start with Briarwood Angus.

By using Briarwood bulls, docility is better and definitely our weaning weights are better! We weaned heifers off this year and they were really big. We keep those back and try to keep a heifer out of the heifer we won from Briarwood. Mature females are moderate with great calving ease. That’s what I’d put up there on a high pedistal with Briarwood bulls. Hardly ever do we have to pull a calf. It’s why we just keep coming back to Briarwood! We haven’t missed a year in buying at least one bull, and up to as many as four at a time. Doc and his crew are the best to get along with. We like to support local. And if someone is willing to put in all that time and effort to raise seedstock, we’ll do our best to support them.
