Briarwood Angus Farms
Quality Bull & Female Sale March 15, 2020 1:00 p.m.
Welcome to Briarwood Angus Sale day is here! We want to welcome you and thank you for attending. Once again, we are pleased to offer herd-building, outstanding genetics that will render real value in real world beef production. In this year’s Briarwood Angus offering, we have 40 fall and spring bulls boasting an excellent set of numbers and EPDs. The spring bulls are proving to be exceptionally strong. We’ve also added a 1/4 Wagyu bull in the sale by bloodlines that trace back to the #1 marbling bull in the U.S. Sire Summary. If you want to improve quality in the heterosis of your herd, here he is! Fall and spring yearlings include sons of Sitz Top Game 561X, Connealy Cool 39L, G A R Sure Fire, and SydGen Exceed, plus a few by our own Briarwood herd bulls. Whether you are looking for easy calving, high yielding or carcass performing, you’ll find a Briarwood sire to fit your program. We are striving to create bulls with sound feet and legs that breed your cows for many years and produce calves that grow and top the sale at the auction barn. The female division and offering is impressive and stacked with quality. We are presenting several young females right out of the heart of our herd. The quality just gets better every year. With their whole career ahead of them, these are the kind of cows you’ll be thrilled to put to work in your herd. Several packages are three in one. You’ll also see outstanding bred and open heifers, including two spring junior project heifers and three fall junior project heifers for youth to take to the show ring and be proud to put back in their own herd. These are the kind of replacement females that are fertile, milk well and stay in your herd. More great news from Briarwood thanks to a feed test conducted by Dr. N.T. Cosby and Field Representative Bud Mareth of Purina Animal Nutrition. We now have direct, unbiased proof that Briarwood Angus Farms has some of the most efficient genetics to go to work for you. In the fall of 2019, a group of 80 fall weaned calves gained an average of 4.04 lbs. per day with a feed conversion efficiency of 4.5 lbs. of feed per pound of gain. Performance that significantly exceeds the average performance of other feeding demonstrations conducted by Purina! Our crew works hard all year long to bring these outstanding cattle to you. We wish you the best with your purchases. If we can assist you in any way, be sure to let us know. We’re in this for the “Long” haul, and want to help you on your journey as well.
Sincerely,
Doc Long, Owner David Warfield, Manager

Talk about balanced across the board! From calving ease to yearling growth, carcass merit to MILK, and docility and doability, Lot 16 is the complete package. See box below to learn the significance of that top 10% accuracy for $B.
Beef Value ($B)
6
$B facilitates simultaneous multi-trait genetic selection for feedlot and carcass merit. $B is a terminal index representing the expected average dollar-per-carcass difference in the progeny postweaning performance and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires. This index assumes commercial producers wean all male and female progeny, retain ownership of these animals through the feedlot phase and market these animals on a quality-based carcass grid. EPDs directly influencing $B include: WW, YW, DMI, CW, Marb, RE, and Fat.
Coming Two-Year-Old Bulls
$Values Updates On May 31, 2019, the American Angus Association updated our EPDs to adjust for industry changes and added two additional $Values. Combined $Value ($C) $C expressed in dollars per head, is an index which includes all traits that make up both Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M) and Beef Value ($B) with the objective that commercial producers will replace 20% of their breeding females per year with replacement heifers retained within their own herd. The remaining cull heifer and steer progeny are then assumed to be sent to the feedlot where the producers retain ownership of those cattle and eventually sell them on a quality-based carcass merit grid. Expected progeny differences (EPDs) directly influencing a combined index: calving ease direct (CED) and maternal (CEM), weaning weight (WW), yearling weight (YW), maternal milk (Milk), heifer pregnancy (HP), docility (DOC), mature cow weight (MW), foot angle (Angle), claw set (Claw), dry matter intake (DMI), marbling (Marb), carcass weight (CW), ribeye area (RE) and fat thickness (Fat). The formula to calculate $C on any given animal is: $C = $M + (1.297*$B). Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M) $M is the most maternally-focused selection index currently available to Angus members and commercial users of Angus genetics. $M, expressed in dollars per head, aims to predict profitability differences in progeny due to genetics from conception to weaning. Increased selection pressure on $M aims to decrease overall mature cow size while maintaining weaning weights consistent with today’s production. Under $M selection, less emphasis is placed on maternal milk, while heifer pregnancy and docility have an increased emphasis, and foot traits start to improve. The index finds cattle that are most profitable when producers receive no economic benefit for traits affecting post-weaning performance. EPDs directly influencing the index include: CED, CEM, WW, Mike, HP, Doc, MW, Angle, and Claw.

Feed Test Proves Briarwood Genetics Exceed in Efficiency
As part of Purina’s commitment to research-proven products that perform for cattle owners, local feeding demonstrations of new products are often conducted with customers. Purina® was excited to partner with Briarwood Angus in a feeding demonstration in the early fall of 2019. Two drafts of calves were weaned in September and October and fed Purina® Accuration® Starter Complete with RX3TM in a bulk self-feeder. Calves were weighed at weaning and 17 days later after consuming an average of 306 lbs of feed. There was no death loss, no digestive issues such as bloat, and no antibiotic treatments needed for respiratory disease. The Briarwood calves gained an average of 4.04 lbs per day with a feed conversion efficiency of 4.5 lbs of feed per pound of gain.
“This performance significantly exceeds the average performance of other feeding demonstrations conducted by Purina.” -- N. T. Cosby, PhD, Sr. Consulting Nutritionist, Purina®
The results achieved at Briarwood with Purina® feed exemplifies Purina® Founder William Danforth’s 4-Square Philosophy for successful animal production: Good Genetics, Good Health, Good Husbandry and Good Nutrition. When evaluating your next investment in genetics and nutrition, consider Briarwood Angus and Purina® Animal Nutrition. for the value offered.

The Targeting the Brand TM Logo Breeders who cultivate genetics that include an emphasis on carcass traits can help commercial customers identify those with the potential to throw calves that will perform better on the rail. The Targeting the Brand logo does that math and simplifies the selection process. The logo can be used by any breeder whose bulls are breed average or better for two key metrics: Marbling EPD (expected progeny difference) and Angus Grid Value Index ($G). To find the cream of the crop for grade potential, qualifying bulls as of fall 2019 need a marbling EPD of at least +0.54, along with $G + 46. As breed averages fluctuate, so do those criteria. Why these numbers? They are just a starting place to help identify genetics that will go on to bring premiums from performance on quality beef grids. The No.1 reason carcasses don’t make the Certified Angus Beef ® brand is a lack of marbling. If you feed cattle, you’ll want to choose bulls above the baseline benchmarks required for your best chance at a premium. Briarwood Sure Fire 9008 - Lot 37
Out of a 4 year old cow from the Ruth line. This cow family has been in the mix for decades at Briarwood. There’s a reason. They calve easy, milk well, and are efficient momma cows with stayability. Lot 37 will carry those traits into your herd.
