We have been working to perfect these traits for over 25 years now. Herd Health: All cattle will be ready for interstate shipment within the continental United States. All bulls are semen tested, and have been tested negative for trichomoniasis and P.I. BVD at Bates County Vet Clinic under the supervision of Trent Callahan, DVM, 660-679-3120. Bulls have been DNA tested for Homozygous Black and Homozygous Polled only if their parents are not homozygous for these traits, and this is denoted in the sale book for each lot. All bulls have had muliple rounds of blackleg & killed viral shots as calves. At semen check they received a Vira Shield 6 plus VL5, pinkeye vaccination, an injectable wormer and clean up pour on.

B/F’ Strategies forFescue Country
Pelvic Measurements - At yearling time, our heifers average measurements are around 190 cm, which is pretty impressive. Pelvic areas are in direct correlation to the scrotal size of their sire. As we continue to demand bigger nutted bulls, the pelvics continue to grow as well.
Scrotal Size - As I just mentioned, pelvic areas and fertility are both an obvious improvement from big nutted bulls. For a bull to walk the pastures here, he needs to have at least a 37 cm at yearling time. And a 40 cm set at 18 months old. A bull with testicals like this will have much more fertility and longevity as far as semen quality goes. If you continually use bulls that measure like this, your yearling heifers will eventually have pelvic measurements around 200 cm, plus extra fertility.
Fertility - With generations of a “NO Excuse” approach to this area, we have built a herd that needs NO pampering in order to get bred back.
Structure & Udders - I will put these two together, as any cattleman worth his salt should be able to visually see the issues here and refuse to pass those genetics on to their customers.
Calving Ease - A NO Excuse philosophy here means that if I have to pull a calf for any reason, that cow either goes to town or is never allowed to raise a bull or replacement heifer again. By implementing this strict standard years ago, plus breeding for larger pelvics, we hardly ever pull a calf. The one or two a year that might need assistance are because of malpresentation (breach, leg back, etc.). And that’s out of 100-plus heifers and approximately 400 mature cows annually.
Birth Weight - Tied into the calving ease and pelvic areas obviously, cows are expected to have a calf between 60 to 85 lbs., and heifers typically calve 55- to 70-lb. babies. Cow families that make a habit of going over this are culled. Yes, the whole family if necessary.
Growth - Once again, cow families either have it or they don’t. Be cautious of getting too moderate on frame or you won’t have much to sell at weaning time. The other extreme is to shoot for 900 lbs. weaning weights which leads you to having 1800 lb. cows! Neither of which is profitable.
Carcass - We simply try to achieve a high Choice quality grade, with a good ribeye size and low yield grade. Last calves we sold to major packer went 100% Choice, 80% YG 1 & 2. If you try going to extremes in this area, you can wreck a good cow herd. I’ve seen it done.
To sum all of this up, if you want to have or keep a flawless, enjoyable cow herd, it is paramount that you buy bulls from an operation that can look past fancy EPDs, pedigrees and pretty pictures to see a registered cow’s true worth -- as if she were simply a commercial cow. In the end, that’s the way every cow needs to work.
