W E L C O M E

Our family history in the cattle business evolved drastically when we started crossing Gelbvieh and Angus genetics over 30 years ago. I was just a kid then, but even I could tell what an improvement the Gelbvieh influence had on the daughters we kept. Not wanting to be closed minded, we have tried a multitude of other breeds over that 30-plus years, but have yet to find one that can come close to matching the fleshing ability, fertility, mothering ability and moderate frame that are all a necessity to all cattlemen that retain their own females.

We have taken things several steps further since implementing this ideal combination, ever striving to produce truly flawless females.

I was very fortunate as a young man to get the opportunity to work cows for some of the most well-known cattlemen in this area. The one thing that was obvious to me was that the exceptional cow herds were managed by men that had the strictest of culling practices (NO excuses, NO second chances).

It became clear that in order to have the kind of seedstock operation I could be genuinely proud of, and the kind of program that my customers deserved to have backing them, we would had to have our own strict standards for our cow herd. At the top of that list is a commitment to using genetics born on fescue. FYI - genetics from outside the fescue belt will NOT leave you with the most profitable females possible. I have tried it. It DOESN’T work!!!

To help you better understand why we stand out from most any seedsotck supplier of any breed in fescue country, here are some key B/F Cattle Co. strategies:

Pelvic Measurements - At yearling time, our heifers average measurements are around 190 cm, which is pretty impressive. Pelvic areas are in direct correlation to the scrotal size of their sire. As we continue to demand bigger nutted bulls to walk the pastures here, the pelvics continue to grow as well.

Scrotal Size - As I just mentioned, pelvic areas and fertility are both an obvious improvement from big nutted bulls. For a bull to walk the pastures here, he needs to have at least a 37 cm at yearling time. And a 40 cm set at 18 months old. A bull with testicals like this will have much more fertility and longevity as far as semen quality goes. If you continually use bulls that measure like this, your yearling heifers will eventually have pelvic measurements around 200 cm, plus extra fertility.

Fertility - With generations of a “NO Excuse” approach to this area, we have built a herd that needs NO pampering in order to get bred back.

Structure & Udders - I will put these two together, as any cattleman worth his salt should be able to visually see the issues here and refuse to pass those genetics on to their customer.

Calving Ease - A NO Excuse philosophy here means #1 Missouri Breeder that if I have to pull a calf for any reason, that cow 2015 - 2020 either goes to town or is never allowed to raise a bull or replacement heifer again. By implementing this strict Dam of Merit & Dam of Distinction standard years ago, plus breeding for larger pelvics, we hardly ever pull a calf. The one or two a year that might need assistance are because of malpresentation (breach, leg back, etc.). And that’s out of 100-plus heifers and approximately 400 mature cows annually.

Birth Weight - Tied into the calving ease and pelvic areas obviously, cows are expected to have a calf between 60 to 85 lbs., and heifers typically calve 55- to 70-lb. babies. Cow families that make a habit of going over this are culled. Yes, the whole family if necessary.

Growth - Once agian, cow families either have it or they don’t. Be cautious of getting too moderate on frame or you won’t have much to sell at weaning time. The other extreme is to shoot for 900 lbs. weaning weights which leads you to having 1800 lb. cows! Neither of which is profitable.

Carcass - We simply try to achieve a high Choice quality grade, with a good ribeye size and low yield grade. Last calves we sold to major packer went 100% Choice, 80% YG 1 & 2. If you try going to extremes in this area, you can wreck a good cow herd. I’ve seen it done.

To sum all of this up, I have learned the hard way! If you want to have or keep a flawless, enjoyable cow herd, it is paramount that you buy bulls from an operation that can look past fancy EPDs, pedigrees and pretty pictues to see a registered cow’s true worth as if she were simply a commercial cow. In the end, that’s the way every cow needs to work.

Herd Health: All cattle will be ready for interstate shipment

within the continental United States. All bulls are semen tested, and have been tested negative for trichomoniasis and P.I. BVD at Bates County Vet Clinic under the supervision of Trent Callahan, DVM, 660-679-3120. Bulls have been DNA tested for Homozygous Black and Homozygous Polled only if their parents are not homozygous for these traits, and this is denoted in the sale book for each lot. All bulls have had muliple rounds of blackleg & killed viral shots as calves. At semen check they received a Vira Shield 6 plus VL5, pinkeye vaccination, an injectable wormer and clean up pour on.

This lead-off red bull is an excellent combination of performance and maternal. He is super thick, gentle, has great structure and huge nuts. His weaning and yearling ratios of 117 speak for themselves!

Possibly more impressive than his performance is the cow family he’s out of. On the bottom side is a Dam of Merit that will make Dam of Distinction after weaning her next calf. She holds a 368 day calving interval on her first 7 calves with a 107 Weaning Weight Ratio (WWR) and 107 Yearling Weight Ratio (YWR). Her daughters have average pelvic area scores of 193 cm.

The maternal grandam, Ms Cocoa 9743P was one of the most powerful cows we have ever owned. Many of our top performance and maternal herd sires go back to this powerhouse female.

A top growth, carcass bull that is out of a top-notch cow family. He is out of a Dam of Merit female that has a text-book udder. The grandam and great grandams are both stellar cows holding 374 and 371 day calving intervals, respectively.

Getting Familiar with Gelbvieh & Balancer ® EPDs EPDs* * EPD Definitions: Listed below are the definitions of American Gelbvieh Associations EPDs and the units in which they are published.

The EPDs with an asterisk (*) next to the name are available to members only.

Maternal traits:

Calving Ease Direct (CED): (CED): Percent of unassisted births of a bull’s calves when he is used on heifers. A higher number is favorable, meaning better calving ease. This EPD can be vital to a rancher looking to decrease the amount of calves pulled in his herd.

Milk (MK): The genetic ability of a sire’s daughters to produce milk expressed in pounds of weaning weight.

Calving Ease Maternal (CEM): Represented as percent of unassisted births in a sire’s firstcalving daughters. A higher number represents more favorable calving ease. This EPD is important to a rancher’s bottom line because it predicts which animals produce daughters with a genetic pre-dispostion to calve unassisted as heifers.

Heifer Pregnancy (HP): Predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant as first-calf heifers in a regular breeding season, expressed as a percent. A higher value of this EPD is favorable, meaning that a higher percentage of a sire’s daughters get pregnant as first calf heifers compared to other sires in his contemporary group.

30-month Pregnancy (PG30): Predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant and calve at three years of age, given that they calved as first-calf heifers. This EPD is expressed as a percent, again, with a higher number being more favorable meaning a higher percentage of a sire’s daughters will calve at three years of age, given they calved as first-calf heifers.

Stayability (ST): Predicts the genetic difference, in terms of percent probability, that a bull’s daughters will stay productive within a herd to at least six years of age. The stayability EPD is one of the best measures currently available to compare a bull’s ability to produce females with reproductive longevity.

Growth traits:

*Average Daily Gain (ADG): Difference in average daily gain in pounds based on an animal’s performance during a feed intake test period. *Residual Feed intake (RFI): Defined as the difference between an animal’s actual daily feed intake and its predicted daily intake based on growth rate and body size. Animals with a positive RFI value are deemed more inefficient because they consume more than expected while animals with a negative RFI value are considered more efficient because they consume less than expected.

Carcass traits:

Total Maternal (TM): An index that combines growth and milk information as a prediction of the weaning weight performance of calves from a sire’s daughters. As an index, this value is not reported with an accompanying accuracy. A greater TM value means a mother that returns comparatively higher weaning weights on her calves. TM Index = MK EPD + ½ WW EPD. $Cow: Represents genetic value in dollars of profit of an animal when retained as a replacement female relative to other animals in the herd. A higher number is more profitable genetics for maternal productivity.

Feeder Profit Index (FPI): An economic selection index designed to aid producers in selecting sires whose progeny will perform in the feedlot and are sold on grade and yield. Well ranking sires for FPI have higher MB and CW than their contemporaries. As a terminal index, little emphasis is put on maternal traits such as ST and CE. Terminal Cross: Used for traits other than maternal.

Gelbvieh% (BA#%): is the percentage Gelbvieh of the offspring that was contributed equally by the parents rounded down to the one-eighth.

Birth Weight (BW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight of the calf.

Weaning Weight (WW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for weaning weight (adjusted to age of dam and a standard 205 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to weaning.

Yearling Weight (YW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for yearling weight (adjusted to a standard 365 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to yearling. *Mature Weight EPD (MW): Predicts the average difference in pounds of mature weight of a sire’s progeny compared to their contemporaries.

Yield Grade (YG): Differences in yield grade

score, which is a predictor of percent retail product. Smaller values suggest that progeny will have a better lean to fat ratio.

Carcass Weight (CW): Difference in pounds of hot carcass weight, adjusted to an industry standard age endpoint.

Ribeye Area (REA): Differences in ribeye area in inches between the 12th and 13th rib. Greater ribeye areas are preferable.

Marbling (MB): Predicts the differences in the degree of marbling within the ribeye as expressed in marbling score units. Greater marbling numbers are preferable and are an indicator of higher carcass quality grades.

Fat (FT): Differences for fat thickness, in inches, for a carcass over the 12th rib, smaller numbers of fat thickness are preferable as excess fat can be detrimental to yield grade.

Efficiency traits: Matter intake (DMI): Represents the average daily dry matter intake per day consumed in pounds. A negative or lesser value is more favorable. For example, Bull A has a DMI EPD of .15 and Bull B has a DMI EPD of -.20, so the progeny of Bull B consume, on average, .35 pound less dry matter per day than progeny from Bull A. Dry

The Rocky calves have been very impressive. They are middle of the road for frame, very thick, stylish and gentle. Calves have exceptional growth for an average BW of 79.5 lbs. It’s hard to find this much growth performance and carcass traits in a maternal package.
