We started crossing Gelbvieh and Angus (which is a Balancer®) over 30 years ago. Over the years we have ventured out and tried other breeds, but have always come back to my obvious preference, the Balancer®.

When we used Balancer® bulls on Balancer® females instead of using Angus on Gelbvieh or vise versa, I began to realize how much more consistent that our calf crops were in our overall cow herd and in every area.

Most of our cows and bulls are now at least four or five generations Balancer®. Despite giving up some hybrid vigor, by using the best of the best Balancer® bulls available, we continue to make steps forward in each and every trait area -- those easily measured, and those not.

Please...Pray for Our Country

I would like to take this opportunity to talk about something which is actually more important than the cattle industry. That is the state of our nation. The Democrat leadership in this country is taking us down a highway of hell (called socialism). At least a third of the Republican leadership say they are against this, but are doing nothing to stop it. It seems that not only China Joe, but many others are simply puppets for a larger, nefarious source that needs the USA to fail.

And simply electing conservatives to head our government will not right all the wrongs.

Most of us can recognize this, yet we may debate who or what is behind it all. Here is a list I want us all to think about: abortion, theft, murder, greed, racism, hatred, envy, political correctness, lawlessness, slander, drugs, tyranny, communism, socialism, immorality, one-world government.

These are ALL EVIL. The USA has never been a perfect place, but with it being severely weakened, this list of evil may very well enslave the whole world.

George Washington once said that what sets apart American Christians from the rest of the world, is that we would rather die on our feet than live on our knees. It seems to me that if it is God’s will to turn this country around, we must get off our rear and stand for truth and righteousness.

I know many of you reading this may not be Christians, but I would like to share something that seems very obvious to me. When reading through the Old Testament, whenever the nation of Israel would have a king that worshiped false gods and practiced evil, in a generation or two, the bulk of the people under him would follow his lead. God would then take His favor away from that nation. The nation would absolutely flounder, if not be seized or enslaved by other nations. This happened time and time again.

The opposite was also true. When Israel had a king that worshiped the one true God, in a generation or two, the people would once again have faith in the Lord. His blessings would then pour out on the nation. When I look at America and how it was founded and all the blessings that have been bestowed on us, it is obvious that it is not by what we have done, but because we have been a nation that has had faith and promoted the one true God.

The generation before me allowed the government to take the Bible and the Ten Commandments out of the schools. We have been on a downhill slide ever since. I think as a nation and in our individual lives, we must repent of any past evils we have done, or that we have allowed to happen because we thought, “What can we really do to make a difference?”

We must pray that God, who sent His son Jesus Christ 2,000 years ago, will either send Him again as the Bible says, or, if He wants, return this nation to greatness, for His glory. Pray that He will guide each of us to have the strength and wisdom to stand and follow His guidance. For He is the only one that can conquer evil.

Embryo transplant calves do always vary widely on birth weight, according to the recip cow that birthed them. This makes me want to lean more heavily on the EPDs for CED & BW on ET calves. We have calved over 150 heifers bred by Total Package (sire of Lots 38-43), and we have not assisted a single heifer. I have been using several sons of his with similar results.

Getting Familiar with Gelbvieh & Balancer ® EPDs EPDs* * EPD Definitions:

Listed below are the definitions of American Gelbvieh Association EPDs and the units in which they are published.

The EPDs with an asterisk (*) next to the name are available to members only.

Maternal traits:

Calving Ease Direct (CED): (CED): Percent of unassisted births of a bull’s calves when he is used on heifers. A higher number is favorable, meaning better calving ease. This EPD can be vital to a rancher looking to decrease the amount of calves pulled in his herd.

Milk (MK): The genetic ability of a sire’s daughters to produce milk expressed in pounds of weaning weight.

Calving Ease Maternal (CEM): Represented as percent of unassisted births in a sire’s firstcalving daughters. A higher number represents more favorable calving ease. This EPD is important to a rancher’s bottom line because it predicts which animals produce daughters with a genetic pre-dispostion to calve unassisted as heifers.

Heifer Pregnancy (HP): Predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant as first-calf heifers in a regular breeding season, expressed as a percent. A higher value of this EPD is favorable, meaning that a higher percentage of a sire’s daughters get pregnant as first calf heifers compared to other sires in his contemporary group.

30-month Pregnancy (PG30): Predicts the probability that a bull’s daughters will become pregnant and calve at three years of age, given that they calved as first-calf heifers. This EPD is expressed as a percent, again, with a higher number being more favorable meaning a higher percentage of a sire’s daughters will calve at three years of age, given they calved as first-calf heifers.

Stayability (ST): Predicts the genetic difference, in terms of percent probability, that a bull’s daughters will stay productive within a herd to at least six years of age. The stayability EPD is one of the best measures currently available to compare a bull’s ability to produce females with reproductive longevity.

Growth traits:

*Average Daily Gain (ADG): Difference in average daily gain in pounds based on an animal’s performance during a feed intake test period. *Residual Feed intake (RFI): Defined as the difference between an animal’s actual daily feed intake and its predicted daily intake based on growth rate and body size. Animals with a positive RFI value are deemed more inefficient because they consume more than expected while animals with a negative RFI value are considered more efficient because they consume less than expected.

Carcass traits:

Total Maternal (TM): An index that combines growth and milk information as a prediction of the weaning weight performance of calves from a sire’s daughters. As an index, this value is not reported with an accompanying accuracy. A greater TM value means a mother that returns comparatively higher weaning weights on her calves. TM Index = MK EPD + ½ WW EPD. $Cow: Represents genetic value in dollars of profit of an animal when retained as a replacement female relative to other animals in the herd. A higher number is more profitable genetics for maternal productivity.

Feeder Profit Index (FPI): An economic selection index designed to aid producers in selecting sires whose progeny will perform in the feedlot and are sold on grade and yield. Well ranking sires for FPI have higher MB and CW than their contemporaries. As a terminal index, little emphasis is put on maternal traits such as ST and CE. Terminal Cross: Used for traits other than maternal.

Gelbvieh% (BA#%): is the percentage Gelbvieh of the offspring that was contributed equally by the parents rounded down to the one-eighth.

Birth Weight (BW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for birth weight of the calf.

Weaning Weight (WW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for weaning weight (adjusted to age of dam and a standard 205 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to weaning.

Yearling Weight (YW): Predicts the difference, in pounds, for yearling weight (adjusted to a standard 365 days of age). This is an indicator of growth from birth to yearling. *Mature Weight EPD (MW): Predicts the average difference in pounds of mature weight of a sire’s progeny compared to their contemporaries.

Yield Grade (YG): Differences in yield grade

score, which is a predictor of percent retail product. Smaller values suggest that progeny will have a better lean to fat ratio.

Carcass Weight (CW): Difference in pounds of hot carcass weight, adjusted to an industry standard age endpoint.

Ribeye Area (REA): Differences in ribeye area in inches between the 12th and 13th rib. Greater ribeye areas are preferable.

Marbling (MB): Predicts the differences in the degree of marbling within the ribeye as expressed in marbling score units. Greater marbling numbers are preferable and are an indicator of higher carcass quality grades.

Fat (FT): Differences for fat thickness, in inches, for a carcass over the 12th rib, smaller numbers of fat thickness are preferable as excess fat can be detrimental to yield grade.

Efficiency traits: Matter intake (DMI): Represents the average daily dry matter intake per day consumed in pounds. A negative or lesser value is more favorable. For example, Bull A has a DMI EPD of .15 and Bull B has a DMI EPD of -.20, so the progeny of Bull B consume, on average, .35 pound less dry matter per day than progeny from Bull A. Dry

Daughters are smooth topped, slick haired, thick and easy fleshing, with average 190 on pelvic scores. I have never pulled a calf from any of his daughters, who are averaging 1.0 for CE, with WWR 107.

Strategies that Set B/F Cattle Co. Apart from Other Seedstock Suppliers in Fescue Country Pelvic Measurements - At yearling time, our heifers average measurements are around 190 cm, which is pretty impressive. Pelvic areas are in direct correlation to the scrotal size of their sire.

As we continue to demand bigger nutted bulls, the pelvics continue to grow as well.

Scrotal Size - As I just mentioned, pelvic areas and fertility are both an obvious improvement from big nutted bulls. For a bull to walk the pastures here, he needs to have at least a 37 cm at yearling time. And a 40 cm set at 18 months old. A bull with testicals like this will have much more fertility and longevity as far as semen quality goes. If you continually use bulls that measure like this, your yearling heifers will eventually have pelvic measurements around 200 cm, plus extra fertility.

Fertility - With generations of a “NO Excuse” approach to this area, we have built a herd that needs NO pampering in order to get bred back.

Structure & Udders - I will put these two together, as any cattleman worth his salt should be able to visually see the issues here and refuse to pass those genetics on to their customers.

Calving Ease - A NO Excuse philosophy here means that if I have to pull a calf for any reason, that cow either goes to town or is never allowed to raise a bull or replacement heifer again. By implementing this strict standard years ago, plus breeding for larger pelvics, we hardly ever pull a calf. The one or two a year that might need assistance are because of malpresentation (breach, leg back, etc.). And that’s out of 100-plus heifers and approximately 400 mature cows annually.

Birth Weight - Tied into the calving ease and pelvic areas obviously, cows are expected to have a calf between 60 to 85 lbs., and heifers typically calve 55- to 70-lb. babies. Cow families that make a habit of going over this are culled. Yes, the whole family if necessary.

Growth - Once again, cow families either have it or they don’t. Be cautious of getting too moderate on frame or you won’t have much to sell at weaning time. The other extreme is to shoot for 900 lbs. weaning weights which leads you to having 1800 lb. cows! Neither of which is profitable.

Carcass - We simply try to achieve a high Choice quality grade, with a good ribeye size and low yield grade. Last calves we sold to major packer went 100% Choice, 80% YG 1 & 2. If you try going to extremes in this area, you can wreck a good cow herd. I’ve seen it done.

To sum all of this up, if you want to have or keep a flawless, enjoyable cow herd, it is paramount that you buy bulls from an operation that can look past fancy EPDs, pedigrees and pretty pictures to see a registered cow’s true worth -- as if she were simply a commercial cow.

In the end, that’s the way every cow needs to work.
