400th Pegasus parkrun You are invited to the 400th Pegasus parkrun!

Pegasus parkrun is a free, timed 5K walk, jog, and run every Saturday at 8am around Lake Pegasus in Pegasus Town. Since June 2016, we’ve had over 33,000 finishes and 165,000 km run around the lake.

Celebrate this milestone with us on October 19 with spot prizes, a bouncy castle, giant Jenga, a live broadcast from Compass FM, face painting, a sausage sizzle, a coffee van, free cake at the Sunshine Café, and much more!

Editor’s Note

Tēnā koutou I’m really pleased to start this month’s Editor’s note with some great news!

Firstly we have increased our print run by another 100 making our delivery number 4,500! This is an added benefit for community groups and clubs and our advertisers.

The reason for the increase of course are the new builds mainly in Ravenswood and some in Pegasus.

The other piece of great news is that we had a wonderful response from our advertising for more deliverers and am pleased to say that for the moment we have sufficient. However, of course if you would like to volunteer, even just as a stand in during sickness and holidays, we’d still love to hear from you.

Once again, we’ve had new advertisers coming on board as well as new groups wanting to promote themselves. I know though, there are many more who still don’t use The Woodpecker to share what they do, so if you do know of anyone, please do ask them to enquire. Community Groups and Club can publicise their groups for free!

You will also see that we have set the date for our lovely volunteers, advertisers and contributors for our Xmas Thank You evening. We do hope

you can come along and join us and let us say a big thank you for supporting our charity.

It’s because of the fantastic contribution I receive via email each month that makes The Woodpecker the great read that it is and think it’s a great testament to you all that we once again have a 64-page publication!

One of the changes we’ve made on the board is reducing the size of our delivery areas as well as now having a third delivery area due to the size of Ravenswood, so we now have Pegasus, Woodend and Ravenswood as three different distribution areas, hence the need for another distributor. We are pleased to confirm that Jonathan Chua is the new distributor working alongside Ger van Hees and Jeff TaylorHayhurst, all three of which are board member.

We have an amazing team of volunteers – a big thank you to you all.

PEGASUS CCTV PROJECT & COMMUNITY WATCH We’re pleased to report that our CCTV project is progressing well. After successfully navigating the process and receiving location consent, work has now begun at our second site!

CCTV Project Funding So far, we’ve received around 41 donations from local businesses and residents for our CCTV project. This represents only 2% of the households in Pegasus. It’s clear we still have a long way to go to achieve widespread community support.

Mayor Dan Gordon Update

I have had a great time attending events around our District recently – celebrating the outstanding achievements of our people.

I am really looking forward to being a guest at the Woodend Volunteer Fire Brigade Honours evening in October.

It is always such a fantastic event to attend and see all of the hard work and dedication from the brigade members acknowledged.

It was an honour to be asked to speak at the very first Rangiora and Sefton combined Volunteer Fire Brigade Honours evening recently. It was a delight to celebrate the success and achievements from throughout the year.

We are so lucky to have amazing volunteers in our community like Rangiora and Sefton Volunteer Fire Brigades - keeping our community safe and protected.

I was also lucky enough to indulge in a childhood favourite of mine when I recently attended the Kaiapoi Borough School production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Jnr. It was one of my favourite movies as a child. I enjoyed seeing all of the hard work from the students and teachers pay off in an excellent performance.

Deputy Mayor Neville Atkinson and I also enjoyed recently meeting with ‘Gold Plus’ students and Principal Hayden van Lent from the School.

achievements and answer questions. I unfortunately couldn’t make it to the special morning tea that was put on by the students for staff, but I wanted to make sure I got down there to celebrate the excellent academic results coming out of Kaiapoi Borough School.

It is a tremendous achievement and speaks volumes to the excellent teachers, led by an excellent Principal in Hayden.

I love visiting our schools and meeting with students and amazing teachers it’s a favourite part of my job.

Everywhere I have been lately I am reminded by people of the excellent rugby played in our district a few weeks ago. I would like to assure people that our staff will continue to have conversations with Canterbury Rugby to bring more of these games to our district.

It was also fantastic to share that day with the Southbridge Shield North Canterbury verses Ellesmere game at the Rangiora Show Grounds.

It was an awesome game with North Canterbury coming out on top 55-13.

We certainly want to be able to host more games like that in the future.

St Barnabas Church Update

Guess what this week is at St Barnabas Church? On Sunday the 6 October at 4pm, bring your pooch, puss, parakeet or painted talking catfish (yep, that’s

a thing). We celebrate the Feast of St Francis by having a Pet Blessing Service – it’ll be a hoot!

Those who attended the twopart series on ‘Belonging in this Land’ in September – a resource created to refresh and expand our knowledge of Te Tiriti O Waitangi – expressed that it was enlightening and sobering.

Thanks to Common Grace Aotearoa in partnership with Karuwhā Trust and Te Manu Hononga for allowing us access to this series.

Our wonderful Music and Play preschool interactive music group that has met on Wednesdays and Fridays for the past couple of years is moving back to one session on a Friday for term 4. We moved to two groups as the numbers and volunteers boomed after Covid and now the time has come for us all to fit back together in one fun Page 8 The Woodpecker October 2024

and love-filled session. See you Fridays at 10am in term 4!

Pegasus parkrun

Kia ora, Pegasus locals! If you haven’t heard, Pegasus parkrun is the place

to be on Saturday mornings. It’s springtime, and we are seeing quite a bit of interest from local walkers, joggers, and runners as we edge closer to our big 400th event on October 19.

Summer is shaping up to be big at parkruns across the country. Last week, our parkrun saw a whopping 198 participants, our 6th highest turnout ever.

Also, last week there were almost 10,000 participants across the 52 parkruns in Aotearoa New Zealand. It’s clear that more and more people are Page 10 The Woodpecker October 2024

discovering the magic of this weekly 5k event!

Pegasus parkrun happens at 8am every Saturday and starts from Motu Quay in Pegasus Town. It’s free too. Just

register online, print your barcode, and you’re good to go. No need to break the bank to stay active.

Whether you’re a seasoned runner, a casual jogger, or just fancy a walk, Pegasus parkrun has something for everyone.

You’ll meet friendly faces, share a laugh, and maybe even make a new mate or two. It’s a great way to feel connected to our wonderful community. Whether you’re aiming for a personal best or just want to get

entertainment, coffee, a sausage sizzle, and tons of spot prizes – but you will need to sign up for parkrun, appear in the results, and be present at the draw to be eligible for a spot prize.

So, what are you waiting for? Lace up your shoes, grab your barcode, and head down to Lake Pegasus this Saturday. It’s a great way to kickstart your weekend, meet new people, and enjoy the beautiful outdoors. See you there!

Kia ora koutou katoa, hari te wiki o te reo Māori! Hello to you all and happy Māori language week for the 14 September - 21 September.

We are getting into full swing with planting for the spring, particularly with our Huria Reserve planting day on 28 September which is welcome to any people wanting to come and plant some trees and secure our future. We are hoping to get 700 plants in the ground with the help from volunteers and many hands make light work so we would love to see you there. There will be a free sausage sizzle, coffee and hot chocolates for people who come along. The planting areas for Huria reserve will be extending and areas already planted will be planted with new, diverse native plants that can be sheltered and protected by the strong plants that are now well established. If you want to be one of the volunteers and join us in bringing bird life and song to our communities then come along and donate some of your energy Page 12 The Woodpecker October 2024

Forestry in the park has drawn to a close.

This work has been very important to keep people safe after the fire in 2022 that left some trees unhealthy and at risk of falling onto trails.

Looking into the future, we will be replanting these areas where trees have been removed to ensure that habitat is available to birds and

other wildlife.

In the park we have had lovely sunny weather with the welcome of spring.

The new flowers blooming on our native trees have been attracting our local pollinators such as bees, flies, and butterflies and birds awaiting nectar from flowers. For students of our local schools who put up insect hotels with collections of natural materials for places for insects to live and hide in away from birds, they have shown great success.

Te Kōhanga Wetlands are continuing to develop as a valuable habitat for birds

that live in or visit wetlands for food and nesting habitat in part of the year.

Below is a photo our ranger Emily took through a pair of binoculars. In the back of the photo, the birds ready to take flight are native kuruwhengi Australasian shovelor ducks and the black ducks with the bright orange eyes in the front of the picture are pāpango scaup ducks.

Finally the whole team at Tūhaitara Coastal Park just want to say a huge thank you for your patience at this time. We are extremely busy right now so we can’t take calls and might be occupied when you walk past the office, but you’re always welcome to send us a message on Facebook, Instagram or via the form on our website. We’re looking forward to things getting back to normal in a couple of months, as well as seeing everyone out and about as the weather warms up!

Woodend Methodist Update

Spring has finally sprung. Such a beautiful time of the year for the garden and new life on our farms and lifestyle blocks and daylight saving now upon us too.

The October movie will be on Wednesday 2 October at 1pm at Woodend Methodist Hall. The movie will be ‘The Sons of Katie Elder’ a western movie. The four sons of Katie Elder unite in their hometown for their mother’s funeral. However, things take a turn when a dispute breaks out between the men and a gunsmith over Elder’s ranch. $5 admission and afternoon tea will be served.

On Sunday 6 October at 9am. at the Woodend Methodist Church there will be a Blessing of the Animals Service as well as Holy Communion. All welcome to bring your pet to be blessed.

This month, we would like to please make a plea and ask that no one lights up any fires.

As I write this, there is a total fire ban, which is due to come off at midnight on the 9 September.

This winter season has been very dry, continuing on from the summer and despite recent rains and snow, it hasn’t been enough to change anything.

On the 5 September (and might I add a few more since then) we had a call out to a burn off, which due to high winds was causing concern.

We were able to take a new recruit with us and she proved to be a useful addition to our crew.

Her name is Alice, and she has just turned 21!

While living up in the far North, she joined a Brigade up there.

Unfortunately, covid hit in that time and Alice was unable to do much training with them. This, of course, was the same for all Volunteering Brigades at that time.

With the restrictions being lifted on covid, Alice decided the time was right to further her education and she decided to go to Film School to study Film Making – specialising in documentary making. After graduating, she moved to Woodend

and is in the process of making a documentary as I write this article.

Some of Alice’s hobbies: She loves to swim in the sea, and she does this all year round – a hardy soul! She also hikes and for her recent 21st, treated herself to a hike down in the lower South Island – a real outdoor girl who enjoys being out in nature.

She listens to many genres of music and plays the guitar and has recently picked up the harmonica. We’re looking forward to hearing you play this instrument Alice as its quite an unusual choice for one so young and as I understand it, a very challenging instrument.

At present, Alice is working full time at Mitre 10 and has a secondary job at The Rangiora Cinema, a very motivated and busy person.

Alice: Welcome to the Woodend Volunteer Fire Brigade – we are happy that you are keen to become a member, and we look forward to having you as part of our crew.

WAIORA LINKS COMMUNITY TRUST Ravenswood ~ Woodend ~ Pegasus ~ Waikuku Wednesday, September 18th saw the return of the Community Cuppa in the Pegasus Community Centre after Waiora Links Board Members took a short winter break. We came back with renewed energy for the rest of 2024.

Ian McGregor, the Chair of WLCT announced a few new activities that the group will be introducing.

Please keep an eye on the Woodpecker, our Facebook pages, and soon-to-bedisplayed flyers for details about these activities.

The 1st of the newly introduced activities will be a regular trip to the Ohoka market. A minibus will pick up and drop off from various locations in Waikuku, Ravenswood, Pegasus, and Woodend. There will be a small koha payable to help make this a sustainable activity. Bookings will be available for these outings.

Our guest speaker at the cuppa event on Wednesday was Mark Glanville, Funeral director at John Rhind Kaiapoi.

Mark talked about the challenges funerals create for friends and family when the deceased has not provided enough information to those making funeral arrangements. A booklet with some information was shared with cuppa guests to help them prepare for the inevitable. For anyone in need of information please get in touch with Mark at Tel: 03 327-7499.

Our next guest speaker is Liz Adcock-White, Liz is a registered social worker and the host of Death Café North Canterbury: a free conversation series focusing on any matter related to death and dying.

Cuppa in the Community Free morning tea for people from Woodend, Ravenswood, Pegasus and surrounding areas.

10am first Tuesday monthly at St Barnabas Church Hall, Woodend.

At our September community cuppa, Sarah from the Rangiora Library came to tell us about all that the library has to offer. It is much more than just a place to read or borrow books. You can join free digital skills classes, play board games, learn about the history of the Waimakariri district and so much more. If you are a library member you can access newspapers for free, online. Sarah took questions and helped some of us to find our way around the website as well as the app which can be downloaded.

Two members from the Woodend-Sefton Community Board joined us, Rhonda and Shona.

Shona gave an update on what is happening in the area. The Community Board has limited funds however Ravenswood has benefitted by getting seats placed along Bob Robertson Drive. The Community Board funded two seats and approached Ravenswood Developments who agreed to fund two more. We are fortunate to have these people who advocate on our behalf. This is an exciting time to be living in North Canterbury.

Woodend Indoor Bowling Club

This year is off to a flying start, and I imagine there are clubs around the district that are sorting out their itinerary for the coming season of sport. We are no different at the Woodend Indoor Bowling club. But, before we get started with the new season in March, we would like to offer people the opportunity to try their hand at this interesting game. So, if you are new to the community or you

may want to get back into the sport, we are holding a ‘Give it a go,’ evening.

This will be held in the Woodend Community Centre at 7pm on 26 February 2024.

On 4 March, at 7pm our Club will hold its first Club night. The season will run from March to September.

Community Association Woodend clean up - Every year we take part in the "Keep New Zealand Beautiful" week. This year we had another fabulous turnout of volunteers, thank you so much for taking the time to clean up the roadsides in the beautiful community we live in. Every little bit helps.

Community garden - We are looking for additional help from the community with the garden, located next to the school. For those that have helped, we are very grateful for your support. Please contact Andy if you can give any assistance on 0275122681.

Woodend Beach playground and toilets - We have fabulous news, all funding has been approved. There are still ongoing discussion's about the location of the toilet block and play space, so watch this space for more information as soon.

Woodend Community Association AGM - OCT 7th - The WCA AGM is on October the 7th at 6pm at the community center, Woodend. All are welcome to attend.

Book exchange - We will soon have a community book exchange. Start sorting out your books as it will be ready in the next few months.

Food pantry - The food pantry is situated in the WASP car park just before the school on the main road. So, if you have spare fruit and vegetables, you may wish to donate a few to our local community by putting them into the pantry. The pantry is designed for food like fruit and veg, baked goods and tinned goods, please no frozen, dairy or past best before dated goods thanks.

Woodend-Sefton Community Board New bench seats in Ravenswood Four very comfortable park bench seats have recently been installed in Ravenswood. They have been strategically placed to provide much needed rest points.

Three are located along Bob Robertson Drive and one overlooks the Taranaki stream by the end of Tara Crescent with a lovely outlook as pictured.

Two of the seats were funded from the Woodend-Sefton Board General Landscaping Budget which then encouraged the very generous donation of the other two seats by Ravenswood Developments. A big thank you to Ravenswood Developments.

What’s Been Happening

The Board approved three funding grants at the September meeting: • Woodend Fire Service - $500 toward more display lighting for Christmas to brighten the community. Looking forward to seeing the display this year.

• North Canterbury Inclusive Sports Festival - $500 toward the running costs.

This is an event for anyone with a disability, particularly the youth, to try a wide array of adapted sports. Come along between 10.30am and 2.30pm to Mainpower stadium on Friday 4th October.

• Sefton Netball Club - $500 toward the purchase of equipment and uniforms.

Rangiora RSA Club transformed into wizarding world for quiz night Rangiora’s RSA Club has been transformed into a Harry Potter wizarding world for a public quiz night.

“Harry Potter and the Quiz of Champions” was organised by Rangiora Promotions to celebrate the popular Harry Potter series by author J.K. Rowling.

Participants were invited to come dressed up as their favourite character and they didn’t hold back with some amazing outfits and costumes.

“Over 150 people attended last Saturday’s event and the so many came dressed in wonderful Harry Potter costumes representing many favourite characters from the Harry Potter series”, Rangiora Promotions Chairperson, Debs TaylorHayhurst, said.

MC and Quiz Master Aaron Lovelace dressed as Professor Dumbledore.

30 teams took part, demonstrating all their wizardry to answer as many questions as possible correctly.

Teams were divided into pre-selected houses, with the winning house being Hufflepuff.

The Harry Potter & The Quiz of Champion winners who won the TriWizard Cup were The Parselmouths.

There were also prizes for the best-dressed costumes which were selected by Mayor Dan Gordon.

Debs said she was extremely pleased with how successful the event went. It was clear for all to see that everyone thoroughly enjoyed the evening.

Feedback from the night was that it was a very well run and well received event bringing people together with a common interest with everyone buying into wonderful friendly competition!

The likelihood is we may very well make this an annual themed event so watch this space this time next year!

YDOT has been successfully teaching hands-on Trade Training skills to young people since 1999.

This local charity presently runs courses in Automotive, Carpentry, Construction Welding & Metalwork, and Hospitality. YDOT helps youth prepare for employment whilst gaining fundamental life skills and developing self-worth, confidence and respect. They then move on with a sense of value and belonging at home, in the community, and in the workplace.

YDOT also runs free gym sessions to help youth develop fitness and a healthy routine.

Did you go to the Woodend School Fair on Sunday, 22 September?

What a great day was had by all and what a fantastic and well attended event.

The Menzshed Pegasus / Woodend were there, supporting the local community and raising funds for our activities. It was great to see so many of our existing supporters, and to make new friends of the shed. We came away very happy with a successful sale day along with a list of orders for some of our more popular items.

The Pegasus / Woodend shed is your local Menzshed, and it is located at Gladstone Park, Woodend. We are open Monday, Wednesday and Friday 9.30am to about 12.30pm. We welcome anybody interested to come and have a chat with us and see if you might like to join up……. Or is there anything we can help you with? Most recently we have repaired or refurbished various items of furniture, built a woodshed and a birdhouse, and modified a steel gate (all for local residents). We are also always working on many and various items for the next time we have a sale (the next one is scheduled for January 2025). We are also always keen to entertain any community projects which may come along. There is no requirement for members to have any particular skills, just enjoying the company of like-minded individuals is usually enough.
