Editor’s Note
Tēnā koutou I’m sure like me you are wondering where the year is going. We are marching through spring and only a month away from the beginning of summer.. This month I wanted to put a plea out there to all the community groups, clubs around our area who still aren’t sharing their activities in The Woodpecker. Whilst there are lots who are, and new ones enquiring all the time, I am sure you know of others you belong to who may benefit from having some promotion in our magazine. We live in an amazing community and doing the role of Editor and even in my own business I am constantly blown away by all the great business and community groups we have doing wonderful work for those who need help and support in all different areas, whether it be services or products. We need to share the love and get the message out there. The other thing I wanted to mention is that your group or club might have an activity or event you wish to promote. We do offer space free of charge to not for profits and a 25% discount for larger spaces, so please do enquire if you think this might be something your group or club is interested in.
I am constantly having enquiries for new advertising coming in every month, with lots of new businesses advertising and gaining huge benefits from doing so. The Woodpecker has a great reach and is read widely, so if you have a business, small or large in or around the area you are welcome to advertise here. Just email me for more information. As always a huge thank you to all our contributers, community and advertisers, without you there would be no Woodpecker. HISTORY What is the old name for Canterbury? Cantwareburh In Sub-Roman Britain, it was known in Old Welsh as Cair Ceint (stronghold of Kent). Occupied by the Jutes, it became known in Old English as Cantwareburh (stronghold of the Kentish men).
When did Māori arrive in Canterbury? North Island Māori (Ngati Māmoe and later Ngāi Tahu) arrived in Canterbury between 1500 and 1700. What is the history of Canterbury New Zealand? The Canterbury area was long settled before British explorer Captain Cook sighted New Zealand in the 1770s. The vast plains set between the mountains and the sea are patchworked with the patterns of rural life. Hundreds of years ago, Māori moa hunters worked these plains leaving a rock art record of their successes.

Woodend-Sefton Community Board New Woodend Town Centre Toilets The Board supported a successful Council application to the Tourism Infrastructure Fund to assist in building new toilets in School Road in Woodend. The existing toilet block is in poor condition and receives more maintenance related service requests than any other toilets in the district and they do not meet current standards for accessibility. The toilets are well situated to serve the cycleway, SH1, the town centre and playground. It is hoped that the mural completed by Woodend School on the current block can be recognised in some way in the new toilets.
Accessible Viewing Platforms - Pegasus and Waikuku Beaches Design on the Pegasus Beach platform has been completed. Design work for the Waikuku Beach one is under way and budget may dictate if it can be completed at the same time. The aim is to also provide easier access for all down to the beaches with paths. This is a project that has attracted a lot of positive feedback since it was first proposed by the Board, and we are looking forward to seeing them in place. Next step will be beach matting and a beach chair to enable access to the water. Funding will need to be sought for this.
Update - Pegasus Bay School request for bike racks Things have moved along since a presentation from Pegasus Bay School pupils at our September meeting about the need for bike racks at Pegasus Beach. Council staff and the Board Chair met with the Sustainable Development Goals Student Ambassadors this month to discuss possible sites and designs. This was highly productive, and the ambassadors were so positive and engaging. It is a real pleasure for us and staff to work with them to get the bike racks in place.

Our Annual Honours Night was held this year on the 7 October 2023 at the RSA in Rangiora, with Justin Blackler as
our MC (owner of Ravenswood New World and supporter of our Brigade). This year, again, was rather special as Senior Fire Fighter Laura Jory received her 14-year Kings Service Medal. This is a long service and good conduct medal and one to be very proud of, as we are very proud of Laura. Laura has achieved a lot in her time in the Brigade, quietly moving up the ranks and becoming our first Woman Driver in the history of our Brigade. She has recently taken on a role as trainer within the Brigade and passed on the vast knowledge that she has accumulated over the years. Lynda Salt gaining another silver bar each for 15 years in the Brigade and becoming Life Honourary Members. Becoming a Life Honourary Member is not necessarily for the years served – Members vote on the individual attaining this Honour, taking into account things like years served, achievements within the Brigade, work over and above calls attended etc. Members would agree that both Duncan and Lynda deserved this accolade. We then had four members receive their 3-year Certificate, two members gaining their 5-year medal, three receiving a silver bar for seven years, one for 11 years and one for 13 years. Woodend Methodist Church Update
Woodend Movie Afternoon Wednesday 1 November – 1 pm ‘America’s Sweetheart’ - This is a romantic comedy. For an awkward, self-conscious girl like Kiki (Julia Roberts), being the personal assistant to a beautiful megastar like Gwen (Catherine Zeta-Jones) isn’t easy. But when she dutifully accepts the task of helping Gwen and her estranged husband Eddie (John Cusack) make it through one last public appearance masterminded by legendary press agent Lee Phillips (Billy Crystal), forever devoted Kiki finds that her job is about to get even harder when her and Eddie’s relationship takes a romantic turn. Gold coin donation and afternoon tea will be served. Sunday 5 November 9am Candle Lighting Service – this is an annual special service where we commemorate the lives of our family and friends who have passed on during the year and light a candle for their loved one. Open invitation to anyone who would like to attend. Bring some morning tea to share. Sunday 12 November 9am will be our monthly Communion Service (one week later than usual due to the Candle Lighting Service the week before). Sunday 19 November after 11.30am at Rangiora Trinity Methodist we are holding a Potluck / Finger Food lunch after the church service. A chance to socialise with Rangiora and Woodend folk. Meet Coral Henderson – Coral Design Hi, my name is Coral and I have been designing graphics and signage in North Canterbury for over 15 years. I have a background in print from my time with large retailers in Auckland and Christchurch before moving to North Canterbury with my two teenagers, and into the signage industry in Woodend. After many happy years providing signs and graphics for the people of
North Canterbury, my lovely employer retired, so the distant idea of my own business became a reality. I have set up my own company from home in Rangiora Coral Design. Woodend Community Association The Woodend Community Association has just had its AGM, where the same appointments have continued onto the year ahead. President Mark Paterson, Vice President Andy Childs, Secretary / Treasurer Kris Stacey, Committee Members - Doug Wethey, Jim Stringleman, Andrew Retallick, Jasper Rosewarne, Jocelyn Adams, Anna Scott and Dan Rosewarne. Thank you to everyone within the association that put in so much energy and effort to help make Woodend an AMAZING place to live. The committee is very excited to have Mark Paterson continue to be the President for the up-and-coming year. Here are a few words from Mark as our WCA President, and what the association means to our community. Woodend Community Association Presidents Report - October 2023 It is with pleasure that I present my report covering the 2022-2023 year. It has been another busy year for the Committee as we pursue our objectives. Just to reiterate what these are: • To promote and support any initiative to advance safety, well-being, and community spirit in the Woodend community. • To provide members of the Woodend community opportunities to express
ideas and concerns. • To raise awareness of developments which affect the Woodend area and provide information to the community. • To liaise with the WDC and its committees and boards and with other local, district or national organisations on matters that affect the common or general interests of the Woodend community. • To encourage the development of additional amenities and services for the Woodend area and to seek support from appropriate quarters for the realisation of such projects. Mayor Dan Gordon Update
Last month we held the Community Service Awards. These awards have a rich history spanning more than 30 years. They recognise the invaluable contributions of individuals who selflessly work behind the scenes to help make this District a great place to be. Every year, dedicated locals contribute an astounding 1.5 million hours of volunteering to the Waimakariri District. These volunteers are the unsung heroes who diligently work to improve the community, often without seeking any recognition for their efforts. That is why Deputy Mayor Neville and I enjoy these awards so much. We personally meet each of the recipients and get the opportunity to thank them and then share their story and achievements with the District. It’s a great privilege. This year there were eight recipients of Community Service Awards, a Mayor’s Award for exceptional community service which went to Jim Gerard, two Youth Service Awards, and three recipients of a new Environmental Award. It was a fantastic night and once again, thank you to all the outstanding volunteers in our District. I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate Matt Page 22 The Woodpecker November 2023
Doocey and Stuart Smith on their re-election, as well as the new MP for Te Tai Tonga Tākuta Ferris and Rino Tirikatene who looks to be returning to Parliament as a List MP. The Council and I are looking forward to working with all of you. I also want to acknowledge Dan Rosewarne, who while unsuccessful, I have enjoyed working with since his appointment as a List MP and wish him well for the future. The election was focused on challenges facing the country such as the costof-living crisis and the substantial infrastructure deficit. With the election now over, the new Government has a responsibility to address these significant issues. And local Government is here to help in partnership. The main thing we want to see from a new Government is a commitment to localism, particularly around Three Waters and of course the Woodend Bypass. We hope to see a significant review of the sector’s funding model so that it is more sustainable and rewards councils who demonstrably govern well and so add value to their communities. It is important that the sector’s funding model supports and enables local government to address at a local level the challenges facing the country.

It was an absolute honour and a privilege to have been re-elected to a fourth term as Member of Parliament for Waimakariri over the weekend. I was extremely humbled to receive my largest majority to return as your representative in the 54th Parliament of New Zealand. As the Member of Parliament for Waimakariri I will work hard to serve everyone in the electorate to the best of my abilities. I will continue to fight hard for after-hours health services for North Cantabrians, and advocate for improved transport infrastructure to allow for continued growth in the region. I’m very much looking forward to fulfilling our promise of starting construction on the long-awaited Woodend Bypass, but also to getting out and about in the community to hear your views and concerns on all the other issues that are most important to you. It has always been a key focus for me to be as accessible as possible for my constituents, and I will continue to hold regular constituent clinics across the electorate, from Belfast to Oxford. New Zealanders voted convincingly for change, and we are looking forward to

delivering that change through our hard work over the coming weeks. We will rebuild the economy, reduce the cost of living, restore law and order, and deliver better public services. We will rein in wasteful spending and ensure we are accountable along the way. But first we will need to exercise some patience while we allow the special votes to be counted and a government to be formed. It’s clear New Zealand wanted change in the form of a National-led government, however the exact numbers are still to be determined, and subsequent negotiations to be had. What’s safe to say, however, is that I am very much looking forward to being part of the government after six years in opposition. It will be an honour to be able to effect real, meaningful change for Waimakariri and wider New Zealand, and I thank you again for giving me the opportunity and mandate through your support at the polling stations. Lastly, I would like to thank my family for their incredible support - I would not be able to serve Waimakariri without it. I look forward to continuing to represent you as your local MP for the next three years.

St Barnabas
This month at St Barnabas Church has been a blast. We enjoyed our Minister, Steven Dunne’s first ever Pet Service. We were blown away by the generous enthusiasm and support of our community. Animates, North Canterbury Stockfeed Supplies, Paws, Pegasus Bay Vets and The Flat White Cafe generously donated animal (and human) prizes to make the event extra special. Emma Dunne (Steven’s wife) shared how when sometimes human relationships are difficult - God gives us animals to help get us through. Another person shared how a family pet has brought them closer in the middle of a hard time. There was a smile on every face, and we enjoyed meeting new friends from our community. families back for Term 4 of Music and Play. This free, interactive, and educational preschool music session followed by Kai and play runs 10am-11:30am Wednesdays and Fridays. Come, have a coffee, enjoy good conversation and unwind while your little ones thoroughly enjoy themselves. Remember we have free food on Fridays at Four- it goes fast - be there on time. This has such a great vibe - sometimes there’s a cuppa and music too. Here at St Bs, we live our lives with a very present and loving God, and we know prayer changes things. New Zealand welcomes Traditional Shito-Ryu, Seiko-Kai Karate New Zealand welcomes Traditional Shito-Ryu, Seiko-Kai Karate Master Ryuichi Takahashi for the first of what is hoped to be many, Gasshuku (Training Camp). 8th Dan Shihan Takahashi started karate aged 15 and is a lifelong student of world-renowned Grandmaster (Soke), Seiko Suzuki. 52 years later and Takahashi Shihan’s passion and enthusiasm for Karate remains as strong as ever. “When I was approached about hosting a Gasshuku in New Zealand, I was ecstatic. It is very rare these days for traditional Karate Master’s to leave Japan to teach, which is why people like me go there to train so often. So, naturally I said yes”. Said T.A.S.K Dojo Instructor Kevin Merriman. The Japanese teacher proved incredibly charismatic with students, and parents embracing his positive energy. In true Kiwi style, Takahashi and his interpreter Fumiko Kanamoto Page 34 The Woodpecker November 2023
were invited to a local farm where to milk newborn lambs and, invited to a tour around Spencerville Fire Station. “Takahashi Shihan appreciated our culture greatly and I can only thank our local community for welcoming our guests so warmly”. Said Kevin. Originally Karate came into existence in Okinawa, Japan as a weapon-less based fighting system for people having to defend themselves in real life confrontational situations. Unfortunately, the traditions of the art are being lost due to the popularity and demand for Sport Karate, whereby people fight for medals or titles using a point scoring system. Sport Karate will eventually outlast traditional karate and so, Takahashi Shihan is on a mission to preserve the traditions and secrets of traditional Karate as the taught to him by Grandmaster Suzuki
Soke. Students were guided in the traditional aspects of Khion (Basics) and Kata (form or pattern) with Bunkai (application to Kata). During the mornings Kevin received private oneto-one training from Takahashi Shihan focusing upon philosophy, mind balance, spiritual applications, hidden wisdom, and the deeper meanings of Karate being a way of life. “It sounds like something out of a Jedi movie, but I promise you I learned some incredible things from Takahashi Shihan, the likes I would never have realised were possible. I can honestly say that in over forty years of martial arts study, I have never encountered a personal education with such in-depth knowledge as provided by Takahashi Shihan”. “Sensei’s purpose for coming to New
Zealand was to provide cognitive instruction to me and our members, (including Ken Wirihana Sensei from North island) in the art of Traditional
Karate. However, it will always be the one-toone lessons between us, for which I will be eternally grateful to my teacher Takahashi for. We have forged a deep connection that is spiritual, and I thank him for his inspirational guidance to me and my students”. Woodend Indoor Bowling Club This year our club celebrated not the end of our playing season but another 20 years as a club at the Five Stags Restaurant. I say another 20 years because the club was first formed back in 1956 when a group of interested persons got together to see if an Indoor Bowling club was viable and soon after the Woodend Indoor Bowling club was formed. The club soon earned its place among other clubs in the area finally obtaining its affiliation to the Canterbury Indoor Bowling Association which then allowed its’ members to participate in Town competitions and North Canterbury tournaments bringing success to its members, and for the next 33 years would produce champions for this little town ship. However, by 1989 the club’s membership had dwindled and a decision was made to put the club into recess. Would this be the end, No! In 2002 another group of interested Page 38 The Woodpecker November 2023
persons came together and the club was resurrected. At that meeting, Pat Vaughan was present, who eventually became our first life member. As a club we had the honour of recognising all the work and dedication that Pat has given to the club and continues to do so to this day. Our president Andrew Petrie compered the night’s proceedings. He provided a colourful account of the club’s history. Another life membership was awarded to yet another outstanding member, Helen Power. Both these remarkable ladies have given so much to this club and the sport of indoor bowls overall, with their many years of dedication, commitment, and experience. They are both fantastic role models to old and new members alike and had the honour of cutting the commemorative cake. (See photo) Long term bowler, Tony Watson presented a new trophy for our members to challenge for which, hopefully, will enable an even more competitive season next year.

Lions Club of Woodend Pegasus
Another month where Lions have served our community. 30 September Woodend Spring Flower Show Lions helped to set up and take down the flower displays. The Woodend Spring Flower Show started in 1932 with a group of farmer’s wives wanting to showcase their flowers and produce. Surviving the war and Great Depression, the show continues the tradition of highlighting beautiful spring flowers in North Canterbury. The 2010 earthquakes moved the show into Rangiora twice, and in 2015 the Show combined with the National Daffodil Society to bring a joint show to Woodend. 14 October was supposed to be Oxford Lions Big Day out but it was postponed due to high winds until November. 15 October three Lions members cooked up a storm at the Woodend School Fair making dozens of sausages and plates of bacon for sandwiches. Lions are here to serve communities and the Woodend school fair is a huge fund-raising event. This is the first time Lions have helped but it won’t be our last. Our next monthly business meeting and social event is being held on Thursday 16 November at the Woodend Tavern. This is an important meeting where Lions can get together and discuss ways of raising money to support good causes. The evening runs from 6pm where we welcome new and prospective members with the business meeting starting at 6:30pm. Page 40 The Woodpecker November 2023
The business meeting gives us a chance to bring members up to date with project developments. We have several very exciting projects in the pipeline, but we desperately need new members and volunteers to enable us to make Woodend, Pegasus, Ravenswood and Waikuku an even better place to live. Pegasus parkrun Update
Isn’t spring glorious? Here at parkrun we are seeing a gentle increase in numbers as people start enjoying the warmer temperature. Admittedly this is quite surprising given that the parkrun start time has clashed with the start of various important rugby games on a Saturday morning! If you are thinking about getting into jogging then having a regular, timed and free 5K event is a great asset to your training plan. You can track your progress visiting your own parkrun profile page where you can track your performance. You many also use your (free) parkrun barcode to do parkruns at any of the 42 events around NZ, or any of the thousands around the Page 42 The Woodpecker November 2023
world. During the winter months, you probably found that your window of opportunity for running was shorter, with dark mornings and evenings drawing in early. In the summer, though, you’ve got daylight on your side. Here are a few tips to help you ease into a regular running routine: Start by walking briskly. This is the only way to start building endurance up to jogging or running. Do make sure that you hydrate properly throughout the day – not just before, during and after you jog. Is it a warm day? Try to schedule your run in the early morning or evening to avoid the heat. Wear sunscreen. Try to walk more during the day. Walk
to the café. Walk to the supermarket. Pace yourself and watch your distance - running in warmer temperatures requires you to adjust your pace and expectations. Wear the right gear. In Canterbury the temperature can fluctuate throughout the day, so layering is key. Give yourself time to adapt – don’t push too hard, and if the temperatures drop then you may have to start again with acclimatisation. Running isn’t easy, particularly if you aren’t doing do it regularly. Do make sure that you stick with it and focus on your goals. You can do this! Pegasus parkrun brings people together in our local community. This does not mean that it is limited to encouraging locals to walk, jog or run 5K each week around Lake Pegasus. It also means that we use this opportunity to bring awareness to
other causes. In the past few weeks Pegasus has supported the Breast Cancer Foundation and the Prostate Cancer Foundation by doing pink and blue themed events respectively. Pegasus parkrun is an all-inclusive event – everyone is welcome. So sign up for a barcode and come along on Saturday morning. We do a first timer briefing at 7:50am, followed by a full run briefing at 7:55am. Its totally free, and its super fun! Pegasus Bay School
Te Kura o Manga Kawari We have had a busy couple of terms at Te Kura o Manga Kawari. There is always something happening in a variety of areas of the school whether it is sports related, arts related, or to do with our Sustainable Goals. I have asked our students to contribute to this issue as they are the ones taking part in or organising the events. The following is written by Alex Deighton. He is a Year 6 student who came up with a great idea. At school we were thinking about how we could change things and make them better. I had an idea about sharing kai, and the older children helping the younger ones. I thought this would be a good idea because the older students would teach the younger children in Pekapeka how to sit, to share and to take turns. Sharing fruit makes sure that the children have a piece of fruit every day which is really important for them so they can grow and be healthy. I went to see Justin at New World. It was so good to see Justin but at first, I was a bit worried about meeting him in person because I didn’t know if he would be interested in my idea about the little students in Pekapeka. We came up with a great deal for the apples and they are going to be delivered every Tuesday. The little ones love having apples every day. Page 48 The Woodpecker November 2023

The following article is from our Sustainable Development Goals Ambassadors: Here at Pegasus Bay School we have 4 Pou woven authentically within our curriculum. One of those Pou are the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. We also have a team of 11 students ranging from 6 to 12 years of age, who are leading sustainable initiatives within our Kura and wider community. The Pegasus Bay School SDG Ambassadors have had a lot of success in their first year as leaders within the school. They are leading by example as our Kura moves into Term 4 where the Inquiry topic is Shine-Be the Change. They are influencing others through authentically embodying our ACT-ive learning dispositions: Creator, Thinker and Adventurer. Our first initiative, which was owned by Seth and Cormac Heslop, was to get bike racks installed down at Pegasus Beach. This was an initiative that the whole SDG Ambassador team got behind as they crafted a very persuasive letter to the Waimakariri District Council. Within a couple of weeks they had got a response and were invited to speak at the Woodend-Sefton Community Board Meeting in September. This involved presenting their case, where they used digital technology through
iMovie, confident and persuasive speaking, and some strong reasons why this initiative was a ‘need and not just a want’ relating to the SDGs. During the holidays we got an email from Grant MacLeod from the WDC who was present at the meeting where the Ambassadors presented. He was so impressed by their presentation, he wanted to meet the SDG Ambassadors personally on 12 October. And he came with wonderful news! It is with great excitement we
announce that the Ambassadors not only have been granted funding for this initiative but are being involved in the design and installation process. This child led initiative not only will bring positive change for our local community, but what is super exciting, the WDC have now prioritised looking at installing bike racks at all beaches
within our Waimakariri region! Planning is already underway, and we hope these will be installed in time for Summer! This news came after a successful fundraiser initiative that the ambassadors led within our community to raise funds for our very own community garden. The fundraiser was selling wildflowers seeds that the ambassadors spent four weeks organising and developing themselves. They had crafted art prints that they created themselves and developed an iMovie to share with our community to encourage them to get behind their fundraiser. They raised just over $250 which is now being used for each active learning space to choose their own mix of vegetables for their assigned bed.
