Editor's Note
The first official day of spring is here, bringing with it the promise of longer days, warmer weather and, hopefully, plenty of sunshine! We’re pleased to bring you another 64-page edition of The Woodpecker, packed full of community news, notices, events and information from across our local area. It’s also great to welcome some new advertisers this month. Their support, along with that of our long-standing advertisers, helps us continue to produce and deliver The Woodpecker free to our community each month. As always, thank you to everyone who sends in articles, photos, notices and updates. The Woodpecker really is your community publication, and we love hearing about what is happening across Pegasus, Ravenswood, Woodend, Tuahiwi, Waikuku and our surrounding communities. A special thank you, too, to those who take the time to email and tell us how much they enjoy The Woodpecker. Each edition is something of a monthly marathon – working through the many emails, editing what comes in and then inputting everything into the publication template, all within a tight timeframe to get it to the printers.
It’s a big job, but an enjoyable and rewarding one, and I’m proud to be part of a local charity that provides an opportunity to give something back to our community. If you’re involved with a local club, group, school, organisation or community initiative, remember you’re welcome to send us your news. And you don’t have to represent an organisation — we’d love to hear your stories too! Whether it’s something interesting, inspiring, amusing or simply a story you think others would enjoy, please get in touch. Don’t forget to send us a photo if you have one. With spring now upon us, there’s plenty happening in our communities over the coming weeks, so take some time to have a browse through this month’s issue and support the wonderful local groups, organisations, events and businesses featured within its pages. Enjoy the September edition and the start of spring! The Woodpecker – Produced by the community, for the community Tēnā koutou, Debs Taylor-Hayhurst Editor, The Woodpecker editor@thewoodpecker.co.nz

Woodend Friendship Club July - August report David Petrie was our guest speaker in July. He presented on the history of Woodend. It was a very informative talk, and he had many old photos that interested, not only those who have lived their lives in Woodend, but also people new to the area. We held a movie afternoon in lieu of a trip. Winter is a difficult time for trips because of the weather, and transport costs are also a deterrent right now. A good crowd gathered, and it could probably happen again. We held a wellattended coffee morning at Cocoa Black in Waikuku. We hadn’t used this venue before. It was lovely, with a fire burning to keep us warm. The food, coffee and company were great. For further information, please phone: Jack Dzenis, President: 027 845 4858 or Lyn Petrie, Secretary: 022 159 2676 Information is also available on our Facebook page, and we have a members-only web page at www.woodendfriendshipclub.co.nz. The web page includes reports, newsletters, events, and more. Page 4

A Note to our Community about Cuppa in the Community I wanted to share an update with everyone who has been part of Cuppa in the Community over the past three years. It is with regret that I advise the Cuppa in the Community is no longer taking place, as we don’t have a suitable venue. This isn’t how we hoped things would end, but I want to acknowledge what the group has meant to so many of us. Lyn Petrie and I started the cuppa after hearing from locals who weren’t keen to travel to Pegasus, especially with the challenges of crossing State Highway One at the roundabout. With Andrew and Tom supporting us behind the scenes, we searched for a welcoming space and were very fortunate to be offered the St Barnabas Church Hall. As we met a need in the community and offered friendship and fellowship to local people, we were offered the hall at no cost, which we appreciated immensely. From there, the group grew into something special. While not a huge group, we regularly had 20-plus people along to chat with each other and listen to topical speakers. One monthly highlight was having Shona Powell join us. She kept everyone informed about what was happening around Waimakariri, especially in Woodend and Ravenswood. The excitement when the footpath from Ravenswood to Chinnerys Road was approved and formed was unforgettable — local people could now walk to our meetings, and we know how hard Shona worked to make that happen. We’ve also been incredibly grateful for the support of local businesses. Joe’s Garage and The Coffee Club donated vouchers right from the beginning, and more recently Ravenswood New World joined in. Their generosity helped us create a warm, welcoming atmosphere with spot prizes and a bit of fun. Lyn and I had already shared with the group that we were feeling quite burnt out — not just from running the cuppa, but from our involvement in other community organisations as well. We had planned to finish at the end of the year, but we were very open to someone else taking it on. Losing the venue simply brought that timeline forward. Even so, I truly hope this isn’t the end. Your voluntary donations are safely held in a bank account, and we would love to organise one final get-together — perhaps at Christmas — to celebrate what we’ve achieved together and to thank everyone who has supported us. Could regular members please email me with your details so we can organise something special – barb13bf@gmail.com Page 6

Community Association Welcome to our September edition for 2026.
Our Food Pantry has had some love. A massive thank you is needed to those that installed the food pantry’s new fridge so the donated food from our fabulous community can be kept fresher and safer for consumption. Many people were involved from the gifting of the fridge, transportation and installation. And thank you to everyone that stocks the food pantry with items for others to use. Please remember that the fridges are unpowered, so no items that need refrigeration.
The Woodend Food Forest Many people from the community, WCA and the Woodend Lions have given their time over the past few months in rejuvenating the Woodend fruit forest, down Gladstone Road. From a casual conversation with a member of the WCA, the Lions have very kindly offered to add the fruit forest to their long list of community projects. Thank you everyone for keeping this forest going to support the families in our community.
Woodend Community Association AGM - 5th Oct The WCA is holding its annual AGM at the Woodend Community Hall, 6pm. Everyone from the community is invited. Come along to hear what is happening in your community and have your say. See you there......
Community clean up - Keep NZ beautiful week - Sat Sep 19th It has become a Woodend Community Association tradition now to organise a community clean up during Keep NZ Beautiful week. This year we are holding it on Saturday September the 19th, 9am at the Woodend Community Centre. We would love your support. Please bring buckets, sacks, gloves and we will hit the streets.
Do you want to help create change in Woodend? At the Woodend Community Association, our aim is to promote and support any initiative which advances safety, wellbeing and community spirit in Woodend. If you are interested in joining our committee, have a idea or for a $10 yearly membership, you can help us deliver projects to improve our community. Operating Hours Our office is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 4.30pm. We’re all connected That’s why the CAB service is so important. We act as a critical community hub, connecting people with the information and services they need. We provide the warmth and welcome of a place where anyone can come to talk about, and get help, with any issue that’s of concern. The CAB service includes in-depth interviewing of a client to identify what is happening for them or what information they seek, and to find out what they’ve done so far. Our trained volunteers research options specific to each client’s situation and then explains these to the client in a way that helps them understand and work out what they want to do next. Extra support even if you’ve already done some research Even if you’ve already done some research, we’re happy to discuss options with you and perhaps find even more information to support you. It can be very helpful to talk things over before taking action, whether that’s what to say when you visit a retailer about a faulty product, how to approach your gas / phone / power provider about a query on your bill, or how to talk to your employer about a workplace issue or your landlord about a tenancy issue. Perhaps you have an issue with the dynamics of family relationships or noisy neighbours. Our Clinics We hold free clinics that cover advice for beneficiaries, employment, immigration, and two types of legal assistance. In addition, we have volunteers who are also Justices of the Peace, and they offer that service when they’re on duty. Please get in touch for dates and more information about the clinics and JPs. General Support If you or someone you know needs information, advice or support on any matter, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us. We’re here to help. We’ll even provide a listening ear if that’s what you need. All our services are free and confidential. You can find us at 209 High Street, Rangiora, or you can phone us on 03 313 8822 or 0800 367 222, or send us an email northcanterbury@cab.org.nz

Dr Kieran will be working Mondays to Thursdays weekly. VIRAL ILLNESS IN COMMUNITY Influenza A and RSV outbreaks is doing the rounds in our community; we kindly ask that anyone experiencing flu like symptoms wear a mask if asked to enter the practice. Masks are available at the entrance. Please stay at home if you are unwell, rest and fluids, hand hygiene and cover coughs and sneezes. Reminder that we also can become short staffed in these situations and will do our best to accommodate all our patients when the demand is increased. Thank you for your support. ☺ 2026 FLU VACCINES – still available Anyone can book in to see the nurse for a Flu Shot - you do not need to be a patient at PMC to book. To make a booking phone us 03 9204060 or call in. Eligibility criteria and fees remain the same as 2025. U14 YEARS REPEAT SCRIPT FEES – From 1st July there is now a charge for repeat scripts for under 14year olds. The fee of $10 ($5 CSC) helps to cover costs for the doctor’s time in reviewing notes/medications and processing the prescription to the pharmacy. There is still a 72-hour turn around for all scripts, unless it is an “Urgent Script request” with additional fees. Only under 14year-old doctors’ visits are subsidised. CERVICAL SCREENING CLINICS – Be reassured we continue to run a robust recall system for our patients. Regular cervical screening (smear tests or self-tests) is one of the best ways to detect early changes that could lead to cervical cancer. Early detection means early treatment – and better outcomes. We have Clinics running weekly, these are led by our experienced practice nurses in a private, comfortable setting (funding available if you meet criteria). ADHD – New Diagnosis – Medication Start – We can offer an ADHD new medication start/review 30-minute consultation with selected doctors for patients that are 18+, have had a specialist ADHD assessment done and have a report confirming the diagnosis. These appointments are $200+ for the consultation only. Additional service charges may apply. Please book in through the receptionist staff. HOW CAN A HEALTH COACH (HC) SUPPORT ME? Kia ora, I’m Sarah, the health coach at PMC. I am here to support you to make improvements to your health and wellbeing, whether it is improving sleep, stress, weight, motivation, eating habits, movement... just about anything that influences your wellbeing. I understand that change takes time, so I am able to see you regularly to help you make that change if you need. Appointments are 30 minutes long and free of charge. I work at PMC on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. You can talk to your doctor or call reception to book an appointment.

Kia ora everyone New Members The Woodend Volunteer Fire Brigade welcomed two new members this month – Alex Campbell and Clay Saunders. Clay moved to Woodend earlier this year from Cromwell and has been loving the Woodend Community, noting how friendly the people are. He joined the brigade to be part of our great team and let the community know that there’s another person out there who is going to be available for them. Clay works as a vehicle inspector for Vehicle Inspection Specialists, based in Templeton and Cromwell. In his spare time, he said he loves “spending time with my wife and toddler, and our dogs. Anytime I get with them is never lost.” Alex is also new to Woodend, having only been here for one year after moving from Australia where she was also a volunteer fire fighter. “I love helping out the community. When I found a local brigade, I went to training and I joined,” she said. Alex works at Archie Brothers in the city and the Holey Moley Christchurch mini golf course. In her spare time, she enjoys archery and playing online games with friends. Alex and Clay will spend up to the next year training for their 7-day Page 20
recruits’ course, held in Woolston. We’re super excited to have them both on board! Sel Lotam Memorial Cup This month we celebrated former Woodend Volunteer Fire Brigade member, Sel Lotam, who passed away in 2020 after 7 years of service. During a Monday night training session, we held the Sel Lotam Memorial Cup, which involved tasks like following a BA guideline, setting up waterways equipment and demonstrating knot tying skills. This year the trophy went to Red Crew! Safety Messages Despite the mornings being cold and frosty, we’ve had several vegetation fire callouts this month. Please remember to empty the ashes from your fireplace into a metal bucket and soak them with water before putting them in the bin. Fireplace ash holds heat for up to 5 days and throwing it under the hedge or fence can spark a fire. Recruitment If you’re feeling inspired by Clay and Alex stepping up to give back to the community, give us a call on 03 312 7794 or email shayne.robinson@ fireandemergency. nz Don’t assume that someone else will do it, be the somebody. Ngā mihi nui! Please get in touch if you have any questions. The Woodpecker - September 2026

Woodend Garden Club The Woodend Garden Club is a friendly and welcoming social group, bringing together people who love gardens, plants and good company – and you certainly don’t need to have a garden to join us. Everyone is welcome! We meet at the Woodend Community Centre on the 3rd Monday of each month at 1.30pm, unless we are enjoying one of our outings. Our meetings are always something to look forward to, with interesting guest speakers, fantastic raffles, a plant and produce sales table, and, of course, a delicious homemade afternoon tea and plenty of friendly conversation. Our August Meeting August was another enjoyable afternoon, with two of our wonderful members, Maureen Day and Pam Cleeve, sharing their knowledge about exhibiting flowers. They explained the differences between stems, spikes, clusters and miniatures. It was an informative presentation, especially for those of us unsure about exhibiting. We were then joined by Paul Hooper from Intelligro, who talked to us about the wonder of soil and compost and how important they are to healthy, thriving gardens. Our raffle was particularly well supported, with generous prizes donated by Mitre 10 Rangiora and Joe’s Garage Ravenswood, along with beautiful potted plants kindly donated by our members. We are grateful for the wonderful support we receive from our local community. Coming Up September 21st – Mini Bus Outing & Lunch We are looking forward to a fabulous day out! Our outing will include a visit to Texture plants for a tour and a talk, followed by lunch at Two Fat Possums Cafe. We will then visit David Adams Daffodil Field, where we will learn more about the wonderful world of daffodils October 3rd - Woodend Spring Flower Show Come along and enjoy the Woodend Spring Flower Show, where our Garden Club will have a plant stall with plenty of plants and produce for sale, you are sure to find something for your own garden. Our Next Meeting Monday 19th October, 1.30pm, Woodend Community Centre We are delighted to welcome Jane Mahoney from Secret Gardens of NZ, who will be our guest speaker. Whether you are an experienced gardener, a beginner, a lover of flowers, or simply looking for a friendly group and an enjoyable afternoon, Woodend Garden Club welcomes you.

Tena Koutou Katoa Welcome back to Term 3!!!
We warmly welcomed our new 5-year-old students and their families who joined Woodend School with a mihi
classrooms. It has been fantastic to see these modern learning spaces come to life, filled with energy, curiosity, and engagement. Cross Country Success Our recent senior and junior Cross Country events were a fantastic celebration of effort, perseverance, and school spirit. It was awesome to see so many smiles out on the course, with students giving their best and encouraging one another every step of the way. A highlight of the day was the strong
whakatau. It has been wonderful seeing them settle in so quickly, building connections and becoming part of our school community. The beginning of the term also marked
a very exciting milestone for our school as we officially opened our new Page 26
sense of support across the school, with both senior and junior students cheering each other on. Events like this showcase not only our students’ determination but also the positive culture we are so proud of at our school. Well done to everyone who took part! North Canterbury Cantamaths Success! Our Woodend School students brought incredible focus, determination, and energy to this year’s Cantamaths The Woodpecker - September 2026
competition. Competing against schools from across North Canterbury, every single one of our teams represented Woodend with true pride, tackling tough mathematical problems under pressure and giving it their absolute best shot. A massive congratulations goes to one of our Year 7 teams, who earned a fantastic 3rd place finish! In a high stakes, fast paced event with intense competition, their quick thinking, strategy, and teamwork really paid off. For our Year 6 students and firsttime competitors, the event was a brilliant learning curve. The fast-paced format of Cantamaths, where speed, accuracy, and communication are key, can be daunting, but our emerging mathematicians stepped up to the challenge with grit and enthusiasm. The experience gained this year will serve them well for future competitions. We are incredibly proud of all our Woodend competitors for their hard work and great sportsmanship! Playground Update! We are excited to share that our new playground opened for students to use on Monday 17 August! This is an exciting milestone for our school and wider community, and we are The Woodpecker - September 2026
looking forward to seeing our students enjoying the new space. Playground Stage 2 The next stage of the project will focus on the eastern side and northern end of the playground. This phase will include further landscaping and the addition of nature play features, a sandpit, and creating more opportunities for students to explore, play and engage with the natural environment. This has been a significant project for our school, and we are incredibly grateful for the patience, support and contributions of our school PTA and community throughout the development. Woodend School Annual Fair The highly anticipated Annual School Fair is returning this September. As the most significant fundraiser on our school calendar, the Fair is more than just a day of incredible fun; it’s a community wide effort to support our students. Come and join us for a fun family day on Saturday the 19 September from 10.00am till 2.00pm. Ngā mihi nui, Andrew & the Woodend School Team

Tennis is a great game for all the family. And yes, we do play during the winter months. All welcome to our midweek social session on a Wednesday evening 7pm to 9pm. We play under lights, with teams made up on the night. It’s good competitive tennis, but we mix teams around to accommodate all skill levels. It’s not too serious, and we have a lot of laughs. There is a $5 fee for non-members and casual players. If you don’t have a racquet yet, that’s ok, as we have some spares. Or there is an open court for people to use during the day. Please just put something into our collection box. The courts are in Gladstone Park next to the rugby club. For any other info visit the Woodend Tennis Facebook page or contact Jim on 021 806 366. St Barnabas Building Project
You may have noticed fences and builders at our church! We have just started a building project to extend our facilities. We have seen growth in numbers coming to church and have been pushed for space in our hall; therefore, we are embarking on an addition which will enable us to widen the scope of our activities to include more people and a variety of groups. Our kitchen is to be extended, and a new hall added to the rear of the current foyer. Our History Our church’s location was frustrating as we felt disconnected to our Woodend community, but Rev Raven must have sensed a thing or two when he donated the land where St Barnabas stands! It is now in the centre of the rapidly expanding community of Pegasus and Ravenswood. In 1860 a wooden church stood on this land surrounded by Page 38
large yew trees It was demolished in 1929 to make way for the present concrete church consecrated in 1938. In 1993 The church hall, a brick structure now a private residence, about 500m south of the church, was sold to fund the present hall (including kitchen and toilets!) The cemetery dates back to 1885 and Warren Stanbury the sexton is working on history boards to make a wander through the cemetery a trip back in time. We are grateful to our Methodist neighbours for making their church available for our Sunday service which is currently at 10.30am. Daily 5pm prayer will continue at St Barnabas as will Free Food on Fridays at 4pm. You can follow us for updates on our website https://www. stbarnabaswoodend.org/ Or on our Facebook page St Barnabas Church. Woodend Spring Flower Show and Children’s Craft Day Spring is almost upon us again which I think we can all look forward to after one of the coldest winters for a few years. In celebration of spring we hold the Woodend Spring Flower Show at the Woodend Community Centre and this year it will be held on 3 October, and fingers crossed the rain stays away this year. This will be the 93rd year that this event has run and as always is well supported by our local community, but word is spreading and we are getting daffodil entries from much further afield as this event is held in high regard in the competitions of the daffodil community. Entry to the show is $5.00 per adult, children admitted free. As usual there will be stalls run by the Garden club and Pegasus Woodend Women’s Institute as well as other local vendors, there will be raffles and our ever-popular Devonshire cream teas. The categories for entries include daffodils, cut flowers, flower arrangements, baking, vegetables, handcraft, photography and a bloke’s

section 163 different entry categories. One of our favourites is the children’s crafts section, five categories in total, and to support this we hold a children’s craft morning on Wednesday 30 September 10am12pm at the Woodend Community Centre, booking a place for your child or children is essential and costs $2.00 per child. The children’s categories include a pinecone animal and an animal made from lollypop sticks and the children are encouraged to enter their creations in the show. Full details are available in our show day booklet which is available from local business or the library or you can download it from https://woodendspringflowershow. weebly.com You can also download the children’s colouring competition from the website. At long last we are pleased to report that the Menz Shed new build is finally underway. As I write we are at the end of the 4th week of the build. Waghorn builders are making great progress. We still have many hurdles to cross before the shed will be operating and we are continue to fund raise for electrical work, drainage and other incidental costs that we will incur. Donations are always welcome. Of course nothing stops the Menz Shed tea break.
We are onsite on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, you are welcome to join us for a cuppa, usually around 9.30, if you are thinking of joining the Menz Shed this is a good time to do it, exciting times ahead We are not allowed to work on this site yet; however, we continue to take on projects. Some of our members are working on small jobs in their own garages or sheds and we continue to work off site in the community. Our next public meeting is on Thursday 24 September, at the Rangiora Museum, 29 Good Street, beside the Bowling club, at 7.30pm. Mayor Dan Gordon Column The recent decision not to refer the proposed Pegasus Golf Course development to the Fast-track process is a wonderful win for the Pegasus community. I want to acknowledge the extraordinary efforts of the Pegasus Residents Group. They organised, advocated, gathered more than 16,000 signatures, and took their concerns all the way to Parliament. Their determination ensured the community’s voice was heard, and I commend Minister Chris Bishop for listening. As I have said previously, this is not about opposing growth. Waimakariri is one of New Zealand’s fastest-growing districts. We have planned carefully for that growth and have capacity for up to 17,000 new homes over the next 30 years, to accommodate around 50,000 new residents. The Council supports Fast-track for complex projects of regional or national significance, particularly major infrastructure such as the Woodend Bypass. But it should not become an alternative pathway for large-scale residential developments in areas that our established planning processes have determined are not suitable for that growth. The Minister’s decision shows what a determined and wellorganised community can achieve. Congratulations again to the Pegasus The Woodpecker - September 2026
Residents Group and everyone who stood behind them. Planning for the future also means remembering the people who helped build the community we have today. It was a privilege recently to be part of the renaming of the upgraded Scout’s Den as the John Harris Memorial Lion’s Den. John gave decades of service to Woodend through rugby, Scouts, Lions and many other organisations, and was well known for his generosity. I knew him personally and always valued his straighttalking views and deep commitment to Woodend. The new name gives future generations the opportunity to learn about someone who gave so much to Woodend. John’s story shows how volunteers quietly strengthen our communities. Collectively, volunteers contribute around 1.5 million hours to our District every year. I’m pleased to announce that nominations are now open for our Community Service Awards, recognising volunteers who give generously of their time and skills. Nominations close on 6 September. If there is someone in our community deserves recognition, I encourage you to put their name forward, forms are available on the Council website. I welcome contact from anyone who needs assistance or has an issue they would like to discuss. Email me at dan. gordon@wmk.govt.nz or phone 021 906 437. I’m here to help. Page 47
WOODEND PEGASUS LIONS CLUB
Lion’s Den Renamed in Memory of John Harris
On Saturday 15 August, more than 100 people braved the cold and wet weather to gather at the Lion’s Den to commemorate John Harris, who was a dedicated Lion for 40 years and actively involved in many other community groups. It was a particularly fitting date to remember John, marking exactly one year since his passing. The Den has now officially been renamed the John Harris Memorial Lion’s Den in his honour. We were grateful to everyone who joined us for this special occasion and would particularly like to acknowledge Mark Paterson, who ensured the commemorative sign honouring John was completed. Guest speakers included Mayor Dan Gordon, Cliff Hurley, Lions Club member and longtime friend of John, and John’s brother Brendan. Each shared personal memories and reflections on John and the contribution he made over many years. The Woodend School Choir also provided entertainment and was warmly received by those gathered. Mayor Dan and Cliff acknowledged the recent upgrades completed at the Den, a joint project between the Woodend Pegasus Lions Club and Waimakariri District Council. Special thanks were also given to Lions President Gay Walker for driving the project forward. The John Harris Memorial Lion’s Den is available for community hire. For further information, contact Gay on 027 436 1364.

W75 Ride on Canvas — Open All Year Round
The W75 art and cycle trail continues to grow as one of North Canterbury’s outdoor adventures. After the excitement of launch weekend, it’s a good time to remind riders that the trail is open 24/7, all year round, ready for anyone keen to explore at their own pace. Starting in Kaiapoi, the 75 kilometre route winds through Waikuku, Ashley, Mandeville and Eyreton, linking existing paths and quiet backcountry roads with five stamping stations featuring local art inspired by each area. It’s a self-directed ride — your ride, your time — perfect for weekend explorers, afterwork cruisers, or anyone wanting a fresh look at our region. Maps and stamp cards are easy to grab locally. Pop into Kaiapoi Subway or The Great Kiwi Bookstore on Williams Street — both have free maps and the official W75 stamp cards ready to go. Whether you’re ticking off stamps, discovering new artwork, or just enjoying the grit and charm of North Canterbury’s landscapes, the W75 is waiting whenever you are. Nigel

Chamber Music New Zealand in partnership with Dolfin-Lin Duo Q&A with Tony What is the theme behind this programme of music? The central idea is “departures.” Not just in the literal sense, but also as a metaphor for origins, journeys, discoveries, endings and new beginnings. For us as a duo, this theme is also personal. Balázs is Hungarian and lives in Germany, and I am a Chinese-born Kiwi living in Budapest. So this programme represents not only the different composers and countries, but also something of our own shared musical identity, shaped by our combined and diverse backgrounds. How did you decide on these particular pieces of music that span 350 years and three continents? The cello and piano repertoire is brimming with masterpieces, but we didn’t want simply a collection of great works. In curating this programme, we wanted not only the two instruments to have a dialogue with one another, but also the pieces themselves to

speak to each other, across cultures and centuries, and between past and present. Kodaly, Bartók, and Gao Ping all lean heavily on folk music traditions of Hungary and China. Was that a deliberate choice? (If so, what draws you to folk music?) Absolutely! You can casually walk into a locale in central Budapest where táncház is happening, where often young Hungarians are playing, dancing, and singing traditional folk music, and knowing all the words! It is still very much a living, beating pulse. For me this is incredibly moving. What draws me to folk music is that it feels very close to life, very human. It is about ordinary folk, about the people. As Kodály famously said, “music belongs to everyone.” To read the full interview go to www. chambergalleryrangiora/concerts Book at Humanitix for 7:30pm, Thursday 10 September, Chamber Gallery Rangiora.

Website: pegasusresidentsgroup.com PEGASUS E: prgi@pegasusresidentsgroup.com COMMUNITY Pegasus Residents’ Group Inc NEWS A WIN FOR PEGASUS, AND THANK YOU There is still work to do. Wolfbrook can pursue
TO OUR COMMUMNITY A win for Pegasus, and a thank you to our community The decision to decline Wolfbrook's application to enter the Fast-track process for its proposed development of the Pegasus Golf Course is something the Pegasus community can rightly celebrate. After months of uncertainty, campaigning, submissions and conversations we are delighted that the Government has decided that the proposal will not proceed through the Fast-track pathway. People in Pegasus stood up for their community. Residents shared information, contacted politicians, signed and promoted the petition, attended meetings and supported the Pegasus Residents Group. The response went well beyond Pegasus, with people across Waimakariri and New Zealand recognising that what was happening here raised important questions about planning, community participation and the use of Fast-track legislation. More than two million people have seen posts from Pegasus Residents Group Facebook page since Wolfbrook purchased the golf course. People across New Zealand agreed that if developers can purchase land outside areas identified for future growth and then seek to use Fast-track to pursue development, it raises serious questions about the value of planning decisions made by councils and communities. For Pegasus residents, the golf course is much more than a parcel of land. It is a defining part of the community that was planned around it. People purchased their homes knowing the planning framework that applied to the golf course and surrounding land, and the prospect of replacing it with a large residential development created enormous uncertainty for residents, particularly those that live on the golf course.

other planning pathways and may choose to make another Fast-track application, so this is not necessarily the end of the story. Pegasus Residents group continues to move forward with the aim of finding a solution that works for the community as well as the landowner. Other communities, including Ohoka, are still dealing with proposals that raise similar concerns. We will support them and advocating for changes to the Fast-track legislation so it cannot be used to circumvent long-term planning decisions. For now, thank you. This is a win for Pegasus, and it belongs to everyone who played a part in it, right across our community.

The Woodpecker is published 11 times a year (February–December, with December covering January). The monthly deadline is the 21st of each month by 5pm, with reminders sent to advertisers and community contributors. To secure your space, please send contributions in as early as possible to avoid missing out. Following the deadline, there is a tight turnaround to prepare the publication for print and distribution, ready for delivery to homes on the 1st of each month.
Relief Deliverer Wanted
We’re looking for an adult relief deliverer to join our wonderful team of Woodpecker volunteers. The role involves approximately one hour a month, covering delivery rounds when one of our regular deliverers is unavailable. It’s a great opportunity for someone who enjoys walking, getting out in the community, and making a difference. If you’d like to be part of a friendly volunteer team, we’d love to hear from you.
