We’re now past the shortest day, and despite being firmly in the middle of winter, we’ve still enjoyed some beautiful weather.
This month we bring you another bumper issue of The Woodpecker, with an impressive 64 pages packed full of community news, events, clubs, groups, and activities. I continue to be amazed by the incredible amount happening across our area and by the many people who work so hard to make our communities such wonderful places to live.
Our tagline, “Produced for the community, by the community,” truly reflects what The Woodpecker is all about. Every month there is an abundance of stories, events, and achievements to share. I often hear from newcomers how valuable it is to have a publication that showcases everything our community has to offer and helps people connect, get involved, and meet others.
We are still looking for relief deliverers to help cover rounds when our regular volunteers are unwell or away on holiday. If you can assist, even occasionally, we would love to hear from you.
Please also take a moment to look at the invitation to our Woodpecker Community Evening and AGM on Thursday 16 July. If you haven’t already RSVP’d, we would be delighted to see you there.
I would like to give a heartfelt thank you to our wonderful team of volunteers who help deliver The Woodpecker to letterboxes throughout our communities each month. We truly have an amazing team, and our Community Evening provides an opportunity to acknowledge and thank them for their contribution - and, in some cases, for me to finally meet them in person. To our advertisers and community contributors, thank you as well. Your support, articles, photographs, notices, and advertising all help make The Woodpecker the enjoyable and informative publication that it is. As always, I welcome your feedback, suggestions, and ideas for future editions. Please keep the comments coming - I would love to hear from you. And finally, to all our younger readers, don’t forget to look out for Mr Woody Woodpecker hidden somewhere in this issue. Send us your photo with Mr Woody and you could appear in next month’s edition.
Enjoy the read.

The Pegasus Residents Group and wider community are doing an outstanding job leading opposition to the proposed Pegasus Golf Course housing development. At the time of writing, just short of 15,000 people have signed the petition to Government requesting the application not be considered under the Fast Track consenting process.
wildlife.
However, for the longer future for the course, Council will continue exploring alternative options with interested parties, including seeing if a consortium can be put together to put an offer to Wolfbrook to purchase the golf course back and protect it for the future.
I have also written to the Minister expressing Council’s opposition to the use of Fast Track. In my view, it is not the appropriate pathway for a proposal of this nature.
The Pegasus Golf Course is not zoned for residential development. It sits within a special purpose zone established to recognise its importance as a key amenity and defining feature of Pegasus. A change to zoning would ordinarily be considered through a formal Resource Management Act process through a private plan change. Council does not support large-scale residential development on this site. Our position is guided by what we are hearing from the community, who continue to emphasise the importance of retaining the golf course and its open space. It is also guided by a District Plan that provides for planned, affordable growth across our district. Residential development is sufficient to accommodate between 14,000 and 17,000 new homes over the next 30 years.
I have met with Wolfbrook to raise community concerns, including maintaining lake and pond levels, and protecting native eels and other
On a more positive note, I recently joined fellow elected members, Community Board members, representatives from the Pegasus Residents Group and contractors to celebrate a major milestone for the new Pegasus Community Centre. With the roof now on, the project remains on track for completion in October. This modern facility will provide a fantastic hub for community activities and connection.
Once again, participating in the annual Big Splash fundraising event was a highlight in my calendar. I was disappointed to have to withdraw this year at the last minute after developing a serious foot infection following an injury.
The event has become an annual tradition for me, and I’ve always been proud to support the work of Rachel’s House Trust.
Whilst I couldn’t take the plunge this year, I enjoyed supporting from the sidelines.
I welcome contact from anyone who needs assistance or has an issue they would like to discuss. Email me at dan. gordon@wmk.govt.nz or phone 021 906 437.

Cuppa in the Community
A free morning tea for people from Woodend, Ravenswood, Pegasus and surrounding areas.
10.00am, second Tuesday of the month, at the Woodend Community Centre
June Meeting:
It was great to see more people at this meeting, and it is always rewarding to see the conversations happening over morning tea.
Our guest speaker was David Petrie, who spoke about the history of the Petries in Woodend and of Woodend itself. David has done extensive research and is very knowledgeable. He has very old photographs, which were shown on the screen for all to see. Those who have lived in Woodend for most of their lives remembered some of the old places shown; however, even to those of us who are recent inhabitants, the photos and the
talk were very interesting. David has more to tell, so we will invite him back again later in the year.
Shona Powell spoke about the Council amalgamations.
For your diary: 14 July – Joseph, Ngai Tahu Representative for Tuhaitara Trust is our guest speaker.

Woodend Garden Club – Est 1946
Mid-Winter Lunch
Members of the WGC gathered for a delightful Mid-Winter Lunch at the Rangiora RSA on Monday the 15 June. The occasion provided an excellent opportunity for members to come together, socialise and have a laugh while enjoying good food during the quieter winter season. The RSA provided a warm and welcoming venue and members appreciated the opportunity to relax and socialise with fellow club members.
The lunch was well attended with nearly 60 members present, creating a cheerful and friendly atmosphere throughout the afternoon. Following the meal we drew our raffle, with some great prizes won by members.
The gathering strengthened friendships within the club and highlighted the sense of community that makes the Woodend Garden Club so special.
A sincere thank you is extended to the RSA staff for their hospitality and to everyone who helped organise the event.
We look forward to our upcoming speakers and outings planned for the next year.

Woodend Bowling Club
At the recent Bowls Canterbury Awards Dinner, Woodend Bowling Club capped off a most successful 2025 / 26 season with the receipt of two prestigious awards. Club President Phil Harris won Administrator of the Year, with Stuart Jenkins taking out the supreme award for Greenkeeper of the Year.
Phil has worked very hard to advance the aims and objects of the club which has had a surge in membership over recent years. He has also actively led substantial improvements to the club's facilities. In addition he has successfully launched a new competition involving other North Canterbury clubs.
Stuart has produced a high-class natural playing surface for many years for members and visitors to enjoy. Bowlers from around the country often comment on the quality of the green, which host Centre and National events.

Community Petition: Pegasus Golf Course
Residents will be aware that Wolfbrook Residential, the new owners of Pegasus Golf Course, have indicated their intention to redevelop the site for housing. This has prompted strong interest and concern within the Pegasus community. Many residents value the golf course not only as a recreational asset, but also as an important part of the character and open space of our town. There is particular concern that any redevelopment proposal could be progressed through the Government’s Fast-Track process. If this occurs, it may significantly limit opportunities for public consultation and reduce the level of local input into decisionmaking.
Doocey MP, who have indicated their willingness to present it to Parliament. This reflects a shared recognition of the importance of fair process and community engagement in decisions of this scale. Residents who wish to support this position are encouraged to sign and share the petition. Participation helps demonstrate
the level of community interest and ensures that Pegasus has a voice in how its future is shaped.

KAIAPOI SPEAKERS
Why you should keep your service box clear
The community is being asked to help ensure electricity service boxes remain clear and accessible at all times.
Through regular service box inspections – and when attending planned repair work – MainPower is increasingly finding service boxes obstructed by fences, planter boxes, timber structures, vegetation or heavy landscaping.
The service boxes are owned by the North Canterbury lines company and control the power supply to a property. Most service boxes are located on the council berm and must always be accessible.
Why does it matter?
MainPower crews must be able to open and remove the lid of a service box and safely access the equipment inside.
Obstructions can delay both planned maintenance and urgent fault repairs, affecting neighbouring customers.
Disturbing live electrical cables around boxes can have serious safety consequences.
In an emergency (such as a fault or fire), obstructions can cause delays or unsafe access conditions.
These situations are classified as red defects – MainPower’s highest level of urgency – because restricted access puts safety at risk. Some of the obstructions seen would require chainsaws or forklifts to remove, which
is not acceptable or safe in a fault situation.
Solid structures, such as fences hard up against boxes or heavy planters are not permitted. Even if a fence does not cover the top of the box, it can still prevent access to the internal equipment.
Recommended clearance areas around service boxes are:
• Clear access to the front of the box (roadside)
• 300mm access to each side and behind the box
• No obstructions above the box
People understandably want to make their properties look great, but service boxes are critical infrastructure and MainPower is legally required to always have clear access to them.
If you are concerned about your service box, call MainPower on 0800 30 90 80.
MainPower teams almost need x-ray vision to spot the service box in this photo. Please ensure the service box outside your property is visible and accessible for repairs and maintenance.

May & June
report
At our May meeting, we inducted two new members, Ruth Crawford and Roger Millard. We also welcomed David Marquet, who has transferred to our Club.
Our speaker was Sarah Perrins, who is a photographer based in North Canterbury. Sarah gave us a brief history of her life and how she has settled on photography as her career. We saw many of her wonderful photographs and learned how long it takes to captu re some of them. Sarah is passionate about capturing special moments with your loved ones so you can look back on them for years to come.

All welcome to our midweek social session on a Wednesday evening 7pm to 9pm.

It’s good competitive tennis, but we mix teams around to accommodate all skill levels.
It’s not too serious, and we have a lot of laughs.
There is a $5 fee for non-members and casual players.
If you don’t have a racquet yet, that’s ok, as we have some spares.
Or there is an open court for people to use during the day. Please just put something into our collection box. The courts are in Gladstone Park next to the rugby club.

New Match, New Friendship
Big Brothers Big Sisters of North Canterbury is excited to introduce one of our newest mentoring matchesMaria (Big) and Te Mamaeroa (Little).
This chatty duo could not stop smiling when they first met and instantly bonded over their shared love of painting, crafts and animals. Their first mentoring session included creativity, conversation and even some time
spent with Maria’s pets.
At Big Brothers Big Sisters, volunteer mentors spend just one hour each week with a young person, building confidence, friendship and positive life experiences through simple everyday activities.
Right now, we urgently need more volunteer mentors across North Canterbury to support local young people who would benefit from having another trusted adult in their corner.
If you’ve ever considered mentoring, we’d love to hear from you. Call 03 310 7004 or email northcanterbury@bbbs.nz to find out more.

St Barnabas Church Update
Imagine witnessing marathon runners approaching the halfway mark, their faces etched with both pain and unwavering determination. As they near the hydration stations, a compassionate volunteer offers a paper cup of water, and they eagerly grasp it, quenching their thirst with cool water. In that moment, their expressions reveal a profound relief and heartfelt gratitude - a simple act of kindness amid their arduous journeys. Do you ever see your life like this? I certainly do. There have been countless moments in life when I yearned for someone to offer me a cup of relief and encouragement, and many have gladly done so.
friendships I never imagined I would find.” Ella, 27yrs.
“St Barnabas has been a place of genuine welcome at a significant time in my life. The community here has helped me grow in faith in ways I didn’t expect, and I’m grateful for the friendships and depth I’ve found.”
Josh, 49yrs.
Life is a rugged journey, full of steep climbs and unpredictable twists. This month, we celebrated the feast day of St Barnabas. He was known historically as the Son of Encouragement. As a church, we have taken on this mantle to bring encouragement to our wider community.
Here are just a few stories of how real people in our community have been uplifted by the people at St Barnabas Church as they embody this gift. “We moved to North Canterbury in our late 20s, with no kids, and found it hard to connect with people. Since becoming part of St Barnabas, our lives have grown in beautiful ways, with
“I recently went through a horrid marriage break-up and could not have imagined what it would have been like to journey through it without my community at St B’s, with someone always on the end of the phone, helping me move house, or answering questions. There is such a wealth of knowledge, love and support right here in our church community.
People who can be there in the good times and the bad.” Emma 55yrs.
“I have been at St Bs for over 15 years. It is a great community to enjoy old friends, make new ones, and try different ideas. I have even been on a mission trip to Vanuatu to help others less fortunate,” Pat, 79yrs.
If you feel like your life or family is running on empty and needs encouragement, come along to a Sunday service or the weekly 5pm prayers. Come and feel the love of a community right here for you.
“Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord your God is with you” Joshua 1:9.

Woodend FENZ
At the beginning of June, we held our Annual General Meeting – our 63rd! (It perhaps doesn’t seem like a lot, but the Woodend Brigade when first formed was an auxiliary to the Rangiora Brigade before becoming a district brigade in its own right.) Reports were presented by the Chief Fire Officer (CFO), treasurer, training co-ordinator amongst others and nominations for offices were duly accepted. The brigade is in good heart, but we are always on the lookout for new members, particularly people who are available to turn out to calls during weekdays.
(BA), hose skills etc. Members are from all walks of life, but this would be the first time that we have taken on a year 12 high school student.
If this is you and you are looking for a challenge with a great team behind you, please get in touch with Shayne, our CFO, or come down on a Monday night at 7pm and see what we are up to on our training nights and have a chat.
This month, I would like to introduce you to Isaac, who has recently come on board as a recruit firefighter. Over the next little while, Isaac will be trained in all aspects of firefighting, including first aid, breathing apparatus
Isaac tells me he’s been longing to join the Brigade, because he has in his words ‘kind of grown up with it.’ His Dad, our CFO would take him down to the station at an early age and he learnt a lot by watching what others were doing there at calls and what was expected of members. Instead of thinking it wasn’t for him, he couldn’t help but be passionate about the thought of joining and being able to help. Since coming on board, he is now excited to get on with learning and developing his skills and experiences. 16-year-old Isaac attends Kaiapoi High School and enjoys music, outdoor education, digital technologies and sound recording, which are the subjects he is pursuing there. His interests include playing both guitar and bass guitar and listening to the bands ‘Metallica’ and ‘Sabaton’.
Welcome Isaac, which seems a funny thing to say as I’ve known you since you were a baby! I’m sure you will learn and grow within our team and become an asset.

Winter is here!
“On winter days when it is cold and wet, we need to watch out for our pets.
If they want a shorter walk, or sleep for longer before it’s dark,
If they have less energy or are lame, they could have arthritis and be in pain.
We can help ease their pain, which will help them play again!”
Never fear....Paws is here!
We have a choice of supplements, medicines and diets to help them bring back their fun and riots.
