The Woodpecker - April 2026

Page 1

SHOUT IT FROM THE ROOFTOPS!

Do you have something worth celebrating in our community?

The Woodpecker is on the lookout for front-page worthy stories to share with our readers and we know there are plenty of incredible moments happening right here across Woodend, Pegasus, Ravenswood, Tuahiwi, Waikuku and beyond.

Whether you are:

▪ A community group or club hosting an upcoming event

▪ Celebrating a recent achievement or milestone

▪ Wanting to share a personal story, success or community win we would love to hear from you!

Let’s celebrate the people, projects and positive moments that make our community so special. If it’s something you’d proudly shout from the rooftops, it could be perfect for The Woodpecker.

Please send your story, details or enquiry to: debs.thewoodpecker@outlook.co.nz

Let’s keep sharing the good news together.

Editor’s Note – April

We are now well and truly into autumn, although still enjoying some beautifully warm, sunny days. As daylight saving comes to an end this month, the days will begin to shorten — a gentle reminder to check the date and time change noted on page 17.

Following our recent call for volunteers, we are delighted to welcome new members to our distribution team, strengthening our resilience and ensuring continued support for our wonderful deliverers: Ravenswood - We welcome Brent Snellex, who takes over from Jonathan Chua, with support from back-up distributor Heather Anderson. Pegasus - Due to growth in this, our largest area, distribution has now been split in two. Jeff Taylor-Hayhurst will continue in the role alongside Adrienne Hill, supported by back-up distributor Stuart Grant. Woodend - Ger van Hees continues as distributor, with recruitment currently underway for additional support. We look forward to introducing this new team member once confirmed. Next month, we’ll be profiling our distribution team with photos so you can “meet” the people behind the scenes who work alongside our valued deliverers to bring The Woodpecker to your letterbox.

To further strengthen our network, we are still seeking back-up deliverers

across all three areas — please see page 41 for details.

We are also looking for a Map Development Coordinator (see page 38), a role that will help us refine and finalise our delivery maps. If you have the skills and time to contribute, we would love to hear from you.

Finally, please save the date for our Community Event and AGM on Thursday 16 July, from 6:00pm at Woodend Community Centre. This promises to be a fantastic evening, with keynote speaker Hon. Matt Doocey MP, alongside other community leaders including Mayor Dan Gordon. RSVP is essential for catering purposes - debs.thewoodpecker@outlook.co.nz — please see pages 22, 27 and 45 for details. Full details available in May edition.

Appointments are open to everyone - you do not need to be a patient at PMC to book. To make a booking visit our website www.pegasusmedicalcentre.co.nz and select the “Flu Clinic” or call us on 03 920 4060 Eligibility criteria and fees remain the same as 2025. CERVICAL SCREENING CLINICS – regular cervical screening (smear tests or self-tests) is one of the best ways to detect early changes that could lead to cervical cancer. Early detection means early treatment – and better outcomes. We have Clinics running weekly, these are led by our experienced practice nurses in a private, comfortable setting (funding available if you meet criteria).

ADHD DIAGNOSIS & TREATMENT – Te Whatu Ora have made changes that allow GPs to diagnose and treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Due to the complex nature of ADHD assessments, PMC had decided not to undertake ADHD assessments at this stage. Your GP is still able to refer you for assessment.

ADVANCED CARE PLANS - Living well your way with increasing health needs can take some planning for the future. Advance care planning is the process of thinking about, discussing and writing down your wishes about the type of medical care and treatment you want, including end of life care. It is a living document and can be changed and updated at any time. This is a guide written in your own words, so health care professionals know your wishes.

SEXUAL HEALTH HELP – if you are 14-17 years old, you can see a doctor or nurse for free. We respect your privacy, and everything you talk about stays confidential.

Cuppa in the Community

A free morning tea for people from Woodend, Ravenswood, Pegasus and surrounding areas.

10 am, second Tuesday of the month at St Barnabas Church Hall, Woodend.

March Meeting: Justin, the owner of New World Ravenswood, was our guest speaker. He arrived well prepared and delivered an informative and engaging talk about his journey toward store ownership. Justin began his career with Progressive, where he also met his wife, Melissa. From there, he worked his way up through Raewood Fresh in Nelson, then Raewood Fresh Harewood, before eventually becoming the owner of New World Ravenswood.

Justin spoke warmly about the strong support he receives from the local community and took the opportunity to address some of the common myths surrounding supermarket ownership. He shared that the store operates on a modest two to four percent profit margi n and currently employs around 144 staff members. He went on to discuss the issue of shoplifting and noted that, unfortunately, New World Ravenswood is not exempt. The store deals with around six shoplifters each week, all of whom are caught and reported.

For your diary: Tuesday 8 April

Thanks to our sponsors: Joe’s Garage, The Coffee Club, St. Barnabas Church and Ravenswood New World.

Work is also underway on a member-led prospectus for potential buyers. Further updates will follow as information becomes available. For enquiries, contact: pegasusguardians@gmail.com

We appreciate the community’s ongoing support and remain hopeful for the future of this valued local facility.

18 February Meeting:

Speakers from Abbeyfield. Waimakariri Inc spoke to the group about their organisation and what they are hoping to achieve.

“It is easy to overlook the growing number of people aged 65 plus for whom retirement is not always enjoyable. For many, it can be a retirement of loneliness, adjusting to the loss of a driving licence, unsuitable accommodation, rising rents and poor health resulting from an inadequate diet.”

first Saturday of each month. Coffee Morning – 25 February: People met at the Coffee Club, Ravenswood, for coffee and a chat.

Abbeyfield is a not-for-profit organisation of volunteers fundraising to build an Abbeyfield house in Kingsbury Avenue, Rangiora for 14 single seniors to live safely, securely, and with companionship. People will be vetted for the accommodation, and their needs are a priority. They will pay fortnightly rent, which will cover accommodation, power, food and overheads.

Volunteers will manage the house and gardens. Meals will be prepared by a housekeeper who will also do the shopping, look after communal areas and keep an eye on residents’ wellbeing.

This is a worthy cause, and they are always looking for volunteers. You can help by becoming a member for only $10 per year to receive newsletters and vote at their AGM. Also buy preserves from their regular Church Street Market in Rangiora held on the

Our outing – 4 March

The Menz Shed is now on the move from our Sims Road Site to its new location in Courtenay Drive, part of the Kaiapoi Community Hub.

The move will take, optimistically, a few more months, maybe longer.

We have 4 new containers at the Courtenay Drive site which are being used to store our materials from the Sims Road site, they will eventually be relocated to their new position when planning consent and foundations are finalised, along with our new building and a relocated building from the old site.

During this transition period we are unable to take on any large projects on site, other than painting projects. However, if you have any jobs that need doing at your home or other premises, we are happy to help, if we can as always.

New Zealand String Quartet presents: Origins

Thursday 7 May, 7:30pm to 9:30pm Chamber Gallery

Rangiora Tickets $35 Adult & $15 Student

Behind every piece of music is a story and across their 2026 Season, the New Zealand String Quartet is diving into them. Join them at Rangiora Chamber Gallery for an evening exploring a rich cross-section of compositional voices and celebrating the art of storytelling through music.

‘Origins’ opens with a piece composed especially for the NZSQ: Mika Cornelius’s Universal Veil, an ethereal and atmospheric trip through the lifecycle of fungi.

Schubert’s vibrant E flat major quartet shows the teenage composer finding his voice before Gareth Farr brings us home with the infectious personality of Mondo Rondo.

Grammy nominee and ‘Brooklyn’s post-millennial Mozart’ (Time Out New York) Missy Mazzoli reimagines a harsh desert landscape into something wild and buoyant in Death Valley Junction. Origins concludes with the cornerstone

of the NZSQ’s 2026 Season, a tribute to Benjamin Britten as they play all three of his string quartets in the 50th year after his death. His firststring quartet, written at 27 years old, prompted musicologist Peter Evans to declare him “a master of tonal architecture with scarcely a rival on the English scene.” It spans the intimate, restless and sublime and forms the perfect ending to our meditation on beginnings.

Origins programme:

 Mika Cornelius Universal Veil

 Franz Schubert String Quartet No. 10, in E flat major (D. 87) Gareth Farr Mondo Rondo

 Interval

 Missy Mazzoli Death Valley Junction

 Benjamin Britten String Quartet No. 1, in D major (Op. 25)

The concert programme, crafted in the NZSQ’s signature style, aims to engage audiences of all levels of familiarity with chamber music. Each piece of music is preceded by a lively and informative introduction delivered by the Quartet members themselves. These introductions seek to shed light on the stories behind the music, making it an enriching experience suitable for all audiences.

MainPower issues reward to stop copper thefts

A dramatic rise in copper thefts from power poles has prompted North Canterbury lines company MainPower to take a firm stance, including offering a $5,000.00 reward for significant information relating to the tampering with or theft of copper earthing wires.

MainPower Chief Executive Sean Horgan says the company has seen a large number of copper earthing wires cut and stolen from power poles across the electricity network since the beginning of the year.

“We have experienced more than 200 thefts this year alone. The growing number of incidents is putting pressure on our resources and costing our community a lot in replacement and operational time.

“Not only are the thefts expensive and disruptive for our customers, it’s also incredibly dangerous. The earth wires play a critical role in maintaining a safe and stable electricity system and their removal compromises an important safety mechanism.

“We estimate the opportunity cost to MainPower to repair thefts so far this year at more than $1million. That money would be much better spent on upgrading the MainPower electricity network or supporting the communities of North Canterbury. As a community-trust owned business, copper theft is costing every power consumer in the region.”

Mr Horgan says the lines company is taking the unusual step of offering a reward for information given the safety concerns, the cost of replacement and the immediate need to curb the activity and encourages anyone with significant information to call 0800 WIRETHEFT to report it.

“The value of the copper being stolen is low in the grand scheme of things. Copper currently sells for around $14 - $17 per kg, and each theft nets very little. To gain a few dollars, the individuals engaging in these highrisk criminal activities are putting our communities at risk of injury or even loss of life.

Reward conditions

Please contact the Wire Theft Information Team on 0800 WIRETHEFT (0800 947 384) or email wiretheft@mainpower.co.nz to share significant information you would like considered for the reward. The reward conditions are available to view on the MainPower website.

MainPower crews replace stolen earth wires from the network.

Mayor Dan Gordon - Mayoral Column

It has been a busy month across our District, and I have been fortunate to attend a wide range of events that highlight the strength and spirit of our community.

I had the honour of laying a wreath alongside Christchurch Mayor Phil Mauger and Chair of Environment Canterbury Deon Swiggs at the Peace Bell in the Botanic Gardens. On this seventh anniversary, we remembered the 51 shuhada, those who were injured, and their families. I also had the chance to reconnect with my good friend Janna Al-Umari, whose son Hussein was tragically lost in the attacks. Moments like these remind us of the resilience of those affected and the shared responsibility we all carry to build a safe and inclusive New Zealand.

highlight, showcasing creativity and fun for all ages. I extend my thanks to the organisers, particularly Karl Horwarth, for bringing this event together so seamlessly.

It was also wonderful to take part in the Momac Kaiapoi River Festival. In my opening remarks, I acknowledged the incredible community support from local groups and sponsors, including Coastguard, Cure Rowing, Waikuku Beach Lifesaving Club, Waka Ama, and Aoraki Dragon. It was fantastic to see so many people enjoying the river, the live music, the carnival, and the market stalls. The cardboard regatta was a particular

The month also included the Mayor’s Taskforce for Jobs Breakfast, which was a real highlight. Brad Olsen, one of New Zealand’s most respected economic commentators, joined us to share his insights on the opportunities ahead for Waimakariri. I was proud to report on our Taskforce for Jobs programme. Already this year, 25 young people have secured full-time employment, and we remain on track to exceed our contracted outcomes, making a real difference for our District. Finally, our Annual Plan is out for consultation We’ve taken a prudent approach to this year’s budget, and several drop-in sessions are planned around the district. Details are available on our Council Facebook page, and I encourage everyone to have their say.

I welcome contact from anyone who needs assistance or has an issue that you might want to discuss.

Map Development Coordinator Volunteer Role

We are seeking a volunteer with a sharp local eye to help translate and / or modify current delivery areas into clear, user-friendly maps for our delivery teams. Standard technical maps can be difficult to navigate, so we need someone who can act as the vital link between our ArcGIS expert and the people on the street. If you have the "spatial sense" to help us simplify professional mapping data into intuitive, easy-to-read guides, your expertise will ensure our charity’s resources get exactly where they need to go.

Our maps help our wonderful deliverers know exactly where to deliver the publication each month. Our original maps were based on developer plans, with areas broken down by stages, and not always the easiest to use on the ground. We need someone with a good local eye and a practical sense of direction to help turn these into clear, simple, easy-tofollow maps for our volunteers.

In this role, you would work alongside our ArcGIS mapping expert at Waimakariri District Council and our distribution team to review, adjust and refine delivery areas so they make practical sense for the volunteers delivering the publications.

If you enjoy working with maps, have a good eye for detail, and like helping things run smoothly behind the scenes, this could be a great way to support your local community.

Your contribution will help ensure The Woodpecker reaches homes across Pegasus, Ravenswood, Woodend, and surrounding areas each month.

Can you find Mr Woody Woodpecker!

Mr Woody Woodpecker is hidden amongst one of The Woodpecker pages. For fun, search for him and if you find him, please EMAIL the Editor on debs. thewoodpecker@outlook.co.nz with a high resolution photo of you pointing to the very page where Mr Woody Woodpecker is, along with your name, age and location and your photo will go in next month’s Woodpecker.

For The First Time Ever!

Mr Woody Woodpecker was found by NO-ONE!!

To prove he was in last month's publication, see photo below from Page 55. Kiddos - please don't let me down and see if you can find Mr Woody Woodpecker hidden somewhere in this month's edition!

As I write this article, the leaves on the trees are changing colour and its’ only early March! What has happened to summer!

The positive thing, and I’m knocking on wood, is that we have seen less scrub and forest fires which has been a blessing for our crew, particularly our daytime members. If joining our brigade is something you think you would be interested in and you live in Woodend or Ravenswood; are home during the weekday; available on Monday Nights for training and would be available to turn out during the weekday once trained, our Chief would love to have a chat with you. One such recruit that is going through the process at the moment is Michaela Ruru. Married to Mikaere, she has 3 children aged 7, 6 and 4. She was a stay-at-home mum, home schooling her children until last year, but decided to go back to full time work at the start of 2026 as an insurance claims consultant at IAG. Her children now attend school and pre-school

respectively and once having been with the Company for a couple of months, she will be able to work part time from home during the day.

She tells me she wanted to join the brigade, because she’d always been passionate about helping others and giving back to her community. She liked the idea of being able to support people, whilst working as part of a strong team, during some of their most difficult moments.

It’s a role that challenges members both physically and mentally and Michaela says that the training has definitely tested her physical strength at times, but she is enjoying the challenge. “It’s been incredibly rewarding learning more about my own capabilities and pushing myself further than I thought I could. I’m looking forward to continuing to develop new skills and grow through the experience. Being able to challenge myself while serving the community alongside such a supportive team has made the experience incredibly meaningful and I’m proud to be part of it.”

As with most members, she loves being part of the brigade and the people in it. She says there’s a real sense of camaraderie and support, and it’s a great feeling knowing we’re all there to help our community through our work.

Michaela, we can see that you are passionate, with a willingness to test and push yourself and we know you will be an asset to our Brigade.

Perfectly imperfect: Christchurch makers

after Seven Sharp Christchurch social enterprise overwhelmed by support after Seven Sharp feature.

The sudden demand saw the team step up from their usual monthly production schedule to daily and weekend manufacturing to keep up with the response.

While the surge in orders has been exciting, the team says it has also highlighted the heart of their brand

A small Christchurch social enterprise is celebrating an incredible wave of support from across New Zealand after being featured on Seven Sharp.

Beauty & Bloom, a purpose-driven brand where a team of people with intellectual disabilities hand-make skincare and wellness products, received more than 300 orders in the days following the television segment.

— embracing what they call being “perfectly imperfect.”

Beauty & Bloom products are handmade in Christchurch, meaning labels may not always be perfectly aligned and bottles are filled carefully by hand rather than machines. For the team behind the brand, these small imperfections are part of the

authenticity and care that goes into every product.

“What has meant the most to us is the incredible support from our community,” the team said. “We feel surrounded by a village of people who believe in what we are doing and want to see our team succeed.”

Beauty & Bloom was created to provide meaningful work, confidence and purpose for its makers, with every product crafted with care by the team. The response following the television feature has reinforced the importance of inclusive employment and community support for social enterprises.

The team says they hope even more people will discover Beauty & Bloom and be inspired by the story behind the products.

As the brand continues to grow, the team is now preparing new seasonal products, including a small Easter collection featuring their Honey Bunny fragrance in a body oil, room spray and lip balm.

Beauty & Bloom products are handmade in Christchurch and available online.

The Waimakariri District Council is embarking on a review of its 2013 Woodend Pegasus Area Strategy – most of the actions identified in this document have now largely been completed.

The Woodend / Eastern Waimakariri urban area (Woodend, Pegasus, North Woodend (Ravenswood), Waikuku) is the fastest growing area in the Waimakariri district, and there has been significant growth and change since the Council’s original 2013 Strategy was adopted. In addition to consistent growth, several other key drivers for change warrant a review of the Strategy. An updated Plan for the wider Woodend / Eastern Waimakariri urban area will guide Council decision -making and coordinate land use and infrastruc ture planning across the area for the next 15+ years.

We are kicking this project off with a quick survey to hear at the very outset what our stakeholders and wider community think about important things like access, community and recreational facilities, and business and centres in this key growth area.

Please take a few minutes to share your thoughts – the information we receive from this early survey will play a key part in how a draft Plan – for public consultation later this year – is shaped. Take the survey https://letstalk.waimakariri.govt.nz/woodend -pegasus -area-strategy-review

ARTHRITIS PAWS VETS

Winter is around the corner, damp and cold can affect our pets, especially if they have arthritis.

Being slow to get up, lameness, less energy and a reluctance to climb stairs or jump onto beds, can all indicate arthritis. At PAWS Vets we believe arthritis can be treated in many ways.

We have a selection of supplements and diets to treat the early signs of arthritis leading on to medications at later stages.

If you suspect arthritis please make an appointment and following examination we will tailor a plan that suits you and your pet.
