Calling all artists Plans for the inaugural Pegasus Bay Art Show to be held at Pegasus Bay School are well under way and the organisers are now ready to start receiving applications from artists who would like to be part of this exciting event. It is a collaborative event run jointly between the Pegasus Bay School PTA and Waikuku Artists Incorporated (WAI) and will be held on Friday 7 and Saturday 8 October 2016. The art show is being run as a fundraiser for the school and promises to be a fantastic event for the whole community. It is anticipated up to 100 Artists will exhibit, and that the majority of these will be from the Waimakariri, Hurunui, Christchurch and Selwyn Districts, however, unlike some other shows, exhibiting artists do not need to reside locally. Along with commission from all sales at the Art Show going directly to the school, leading into the event, artists from within the WAI group will provide workshop

opportunities to children at Pegasus Bay School. The public can expect an exciting variety of artworks on display as exhibitor categories include painting, drawing, print, mixed medium, collage, photography, sculpture, ceramics, glass, jewellery, woodwork, metalwork, textiles, natural fibre and craftwork. WAI is thrilled to have Raymond Herber from The Quarry as the guest artist, who is known for combining traditional and contemporary methods with his medium of choice, steel. Quilliam Collister will be doing a ‘Live Painting’ on the opening night, which will then be auctioned. Artists interested in learning more about this art show are encouraged to visit the WAI website, waikukuartists.co.nz where application forms and guidelines can be found in the events section. There is also a Facebook page set up “Pegasus Bay Art Show” which will keep everyone updated on the exciting event.

Dairy tankers, timber tucks, etc. are common in other areas, but nothing matches being on the main trucking route between Christchurch at one end and Nelson and the Cook Strait ferries at the other.

Do you know someone who voluntarily goes above and beyond?
Nominations for the annual Community Service Awards are now open. The popular awards, provide residents of the Waimakariri district with an opportunity to recognise voluntary service from their peers in the fields of the arts, culture, education, health, welfare, sport, recreation or youth development.
Such is the level of interest, in 2015, 20 people were honoured with awards for a wide range of contributions. Nominations can only be made by those residing within the district, and require the support of two residents to be eligible.The nomination form is available on the WDC website www.waimakariri.govt.nz, or can be collected from the Council Service Centres or libraries. The deadline for nominations is Friday July
1, with recipients revealed at a function to be held at the end of August.

April has been a busy month for our institute with visits to the most enjoyable Rangiora’s Table Bowls club, Kainga fund raising and lunch day, our craft mornings and our monthly meetings.

Now that our wonderful spring is just a memory it is now time to do all the winter jobs in the garden.

Woodend Combined Probus Club
Our May Mini-Speaker was a club member born in Christchurch, who lived in Richmond and then Bromley with her parents, two older brothers and eventually three younger sisters. Early holidays were at Ngkuta Bay in the Marlborough Sounds, taking the train from Christchurch and then a water taxi. When the family grew to 6 children their Dad built a caravan which served as a bedroom for the two boys and as a holiday home on wheels. At High School she took a Commercial Course which led to an “eye-opening” job at a social service centre. In her late teens the family moved to Redcliffs and she met and married her husband. Subsequently she had some interesting Office jobs – with Norvic Footwear, GL Bowron Sheepskin tannery, Wormald Vigilant and Wormald International Sensory Aids (which she helped to set up). After some years a son was born and after moving to Sefton, a daughter. As secretary of Sefton Plunket she helped establish the playgroup, worked with Plunket Home Help as well as being on the PTA and belonging to the Jaycees. She has holidayed with friends from “way back”, including 3 days in Fiji they won in a radio competition! She has been on a couple of sea cruises, backpacked the Milford Track with her sisters and has been “road-tripping” with them to Akaroa (favourite), Oamaru and Dunedin. Her last job was a school bus driver, first at Broomfield and then at Sefton. Now in Probus, she is “clubbing” with the best of them!
are included in her book “Tea, Sugar & a Dream” which, if said quickly, sounds like the Turkish for “thank you”! After her children had grown up, marriage separation seemed a good reason to consider setting off to experience her “big OE”. This started with flying to London to meet up with her daughter who was currently living there. From this starting point Shirley described how she worked in London, travelled around England and Europe before her daughter urged her to visit Turkey. Going to Istanbul for a month convinced Shirley that she wanted to live there. This had to be delayed for a few months while Shirley worked in the US as a councillor for “Camp America”. Soon Shirley was back in Turkey, working as a teacher of English as a Foreign Language and she stayed there for 17 years. Shirley told us of her experiences in teaching, the difficulties she had in buying property, experiencing an earthquake, and the important religious events of Ramadan Bayram and Kurban Bayram. She emphasised the generosity and capability of the Turkish people. At the conclusion of her talk Shirley generously donated a copy of her book to our Club.
Our Main Speaker last month was Shirley Smith who shared with us her experience of living and working in Turkey. Shirley’s story of these experiences and others

Our regular monthly bus trip took 45 of us to “Ambrosia Nurseries”, the 15 acre wholesale plant nursery at Springston, where manager Malcolm Baker gave us a very interesting and informative tour. We enjoyed lunch and a good chat at the Hornby Working Men’s’ Club before returning to Woodend.

tournament cup and a challenge for the cup will be made by the Sefton club in June. Next week the club will visit the Rangiora RSA for a social evening of bowls. TREES AND RESERVES
Its great to see that tree planting is underway again now that the weather is right for it.
Hurunui Reserve – for those residents wondering when something will be done to improve this reserve; WDC do intend to implement improvements in this reserve and the first step of that will be public consultation. This is likely to happen in Spring this year. Gladstone Park – The plan for upgrading Gladstone Park over 3 years at a cost of $300,000 per year has been signed off. Stage one of the plan will commence soon with the demolition of the old house and removal of rubbish. This will be followed by the car park extension outside the rugby club rooms, the formation of a central path along the raised earth mound linking Hakatere Road to Gladstone Road and the preparation of an irrigation plan. Longer term, the plan includes plantings, additional sports fields and two dog parks (one for big and one for small dogs). WHO CAN HELP? We hear that sometimes residents receive conflicting information about who to
go to when they want to report an issue with amenities in Pegasus. The Council or the developer? If you are not getting a satisfactory response, you are welcome to contact the Pegasus Residents Group with your issue. Our recent AGM was well attended and was followed by a very informative presentation from Tony Spowat of NZTA. Perhaps the main message from Tony’s talk with regard to the Northern Roading Corridors is that it won’t happen overnight, but it will happen and it will be worth the wait. Will the draft changes affect you?
Waimakariri District is susceptible to a number of natural hazards, this information has been mapped and is being used to review the Waimakariri District Plan so that the impact of natural hazards on people, property and the environment can be assessed and managed.
For residents of the Waimakariri District this means there would be proposed new provisions relating to building and development for properties located in hazard areas that feature identified fault lines, or are known to be susceptible to liquefaction or flooding, or that are located in coastal hazard areas. For example in some flood hazard areas, raised floor heights are proposed to protect buildings from being inundated with flood water.
There is an INTERACTIVE MAP available on the Council website which outlines the hazard areas. To learn more about how the draft changes may affect your property and your plans for the future, be at the drop in session at the Woodend Community Centre on Tuesday 7th June at 5:30 – 7:00pm.

Registrations now open for Pegasus parkrun
Anyone interested in being part of Pegasus parkrun are now able to register online. The first event will take place on Saturday 18 June and every Saturday thereafter. The 5km timed run is a free event and registration is open to all – from juniors and first timers to Olympians and octogenarians. Prior registration is essential, as this gives participants a personal barcode which assists with event organization and recording results. Registration is available at www.parkrun.co.nz Once registered runners for the inaugural event are invited to meet at the swing bridge 10 mins before the 8:00am start on Saturday 18 June.
Community defibrillator now available 24/7 at Pegasus Medical Centre A combined effort from Pegasus resident Rosie Coster, the Rangiora Loburn Red Cross and the Pegasus Resident’s Group, has resulted in the installation of an AED device on the outside of the Pegasus Medical Centre. To make it available for public use at any time it is located on the outside of the building. The fully automated lifesaving device will talk the user through what needs to be done to potentially save the life of someone who has suffered a cardiac arrest. Dial 111 to obtain the access code. On 15th May we held services to celebrate Jesus’ gift of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost Sunday, which is always a special festival for the church. We still have two services each Sunday, one in the morning and one in the evening. At 9.30 am we have a Traditional service, with traditional worship songs or hymns and a sermon and morning tea afterwards. Then at 4.30 pm we have an informal Contemporary service, with modern worship songs and a speaker, followed by a sit down meal. The two services are quite different in format, but they share worship, fellowship and food. And we love to welcome new people, so if you would like to meet us, just come along one day. The Mainly Music sessions are going well again this term. A lot of planning goes into making sure each session is different. There are still spaces available, so if you would like to bring your children along we would love to see you there. Don’t forget, we are always collecting used postage stamps (not Kiwi stamps) on behalf of Anglican Missions, and if you have any stamps which can be recycled in a good cause, we would be pleased to receive them from you. In the meantime, we hope you manage to stay warm and dry now winter is here. Page 24
