The season of Advent is again upon us. It is a season of expectation and anticipation. It is a season of waiting. We wait for the coming of Christmas, that wonderful, joyful celebration of our Lord’s first coming as a baby in a manger in Bethlehem. But during Advent we are also reminded we are waiting for our Lord’s second coming as King of Kings and Lord of Lords, when all will be made new and God’s purpose for his creation will be realized. Dietrich Bonhoeffer, the young German theologian who stood against the evil of Hitler, and was executed by the Nazis just days before the war was won, wrote these words from his prison cell in 1943: “A prison cell, in which one waits, hopes… and is completely dependent on the fact that the door of freedom has to be opened from the outside, is not a bad picture of Advent.” He reminds us that life on earth is a matter of anticipation and expectation. As followers of Christ we know something better is in store in the future. Although we must endure heartache and suffering, the time will come will all will be made well. We live in hope as we anticipate the coming of our Lord. I wish for you a joyful Christmas and a blessed Advent season. Your friend,
