Dear Residents of The Woodlands,
Spring is strategic planning time for The Woodlands Township, and as such, the Board of Directors is scheduled to hold their strategic planning workshop May 15 at 8:30 a.m. at The Woodlands Township. The primary focus will be on reviewing the 2026 budget and five year plan and in preparation for the upcoming budget process in August. The workshop is an important opportunity for the Board to talk through current strategic priorities, evaluate emerging needs and set a financial path that supports the community’s continued success.
Over the years, the Board has made meaningful investments in areas residents care about most—like enhanced law enforcement services, reforestation efforts and expanded parks and pathways. These discussions help ensure every dollar is spent thoughtfully and reflects the values that make The Woodlands such a special place to live.
As one of the nation’s leading master-planned communities, The Woodlands follows a unique approach to governance and service delivery. The Township provides services such as covenant administration, transportation, trash and recycling, visitor services, economic development, parks and recreation and public safety—all while keeping a strong focus on preserving green space and quality of life.
In addition, during the workshop, the Board will review issues related to e-bikes and e-scooters, public golf, a performing arts center, a new luxury hotel, our Township capital reserves and many other issues that affect the Township budget and quality of life in The Woodlands.

THE WOODLANDS TOWNSHIP DIRECTOR OF PARKS AND RECREATION
EVERY CAREER STARTS SOMEWHERE—AND FOR ONE LEADER IN THE WOODLANDS, IT BEGAN POOLSIDE AS A SUMMER LIFEGUARD.
Meet John McGowan, The Woodlands Township Director of Parks and Recreation. John was hired as a pool supervisor back in the 90s and worked his way up through zone coordinator, recreation specialist, aquatics superintendent, Town Center superintendent, assistant director of parks and recreation, and as of almost four years ago, Director of Parks and Recreation. He is uniquely qualified to talk about finding a career path at The Woodlands Township.

John was inspired by his father, who was also a lifeguard. Looking for a summer job one year, John stepped into a lifeguarding role with simple goals: earn some money and make some friends. He never imagined it would lead to a career in public service, let alone becoming Director of Parks and Recreation. “I just continued on, and here we are,” he says.
That first job, however, laid a powerful foundation. Lifeguarding taught him essential skills like customer service, time management and water safety—skills that continue to influence his leadership today. More importantly, it instilled a strong sense of responsibility and service, shaping the way he approached future opportunities.
“Summer jobs are the beginning of a career path,” he explains. “You’re learning skills you’ll use for the rest of your life.” For many young people, these early roles provide their first experience with teamwork, accountability and realworld expectations.
Now overseeing a large operation with 14 pools and hundreds of seasonal staff, he sees firsthand how impactful these positions can be. Many employees return year after year, some eventually transitioning into full-time roles. Others carry their experience into entirely different careers, becoming doctors, teachers and even pilots.
What makes a great seasonal employee? A positive attitude, flexibility and a genuine enjoyment of working with others. These qualities not only help individuals succeed but also strengthen the community they serve.
His message to those considering applying is simple: “Come on and join us. It’s a great opportunity and a great starting point.”
Each summer, these employees do more than staff pools— they create safe, welcoming spaces and lasting community connections. And for some, it’s just the first step in a much bigger journey.

Summer looks a little different this year at Texas TreeVentures, with the addition of a new Outdoor Adventure Camp designed for kids who would rather be outside than anywhere else.
The half-day camp runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and packs in a variety of activities without feeling rushed. Campers will spend time kayaking on Lake Paloma, climbing through the aerial adventure course, trying their hand at archery and exploring the surrounding forest. There’s also plenty of room for group games and the kind of unstructured moments that make summer feel like summer.

Our instructors will guide participants through a variety of drills, games and challenges designed to help them improve their accuracy while having a great time.

GO ON A FIRED UP TOUR WITH THE WOODLANDS FIRE DEPARTMENT THIS SUMMER!
The Woodlands Township Neighborhood Services is hosting Fired Up Tours at The Woodlands Township fire stations from May 9 to June 27, offering community members the chance to explore fire apparatus, meet firefighters and learn fire safety with special activities for children. The events will feature representatives from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Crime Prevention Unit and the Harris County Constable’s Office, Precinct 4, who will provide public safety information and showcase patrol vehicles. Program specialists will also discuss neighborhood safety programs like Neighborhood Watch, Respect the Path and other ways residents can help maintain safer neighborhoods.

A WEST TEXAN IN HURRICANE COUNTRY

BE PREPARED FOR HURRICANE SEASON
I grew up in West Texas where hurricanes were not part of life. Rain was not either. In Midland, we average about 14 inches of rainfall a year. Here in the Houston region, that number jumps to 45 to 55 inches annually. It is not uncommon to get several inches of rain in just a few days, sometimes matching what I would have seen in an entire year growing up.
When I moved to the Houston area in 2012, hurricanes were unfamiliar and honestly frightening. At the time, I served as Director of Public Affairs for the City of Seabrook, a coastal community where storm surge and direct impacts were constant concerns. Preparing residents for hurricanes became a central part of my role. That meant helping people understand what to expect along the coast and how to get ready, then communicating with them before, during and after each storm.
What I have learned since is that while coastal communities often focus on water rising from the bay, inland communities like The Woodlands face different but equally serious risks, from strong winds moving through dense tree cover to unexpected flooding caused by prolonged rainfall. Hurricane Harvey showed that even areas like The Woodlands can experience flooding, with some homes taking on water despite being far from the coast.
During my time in Seabrook, we experienced several tropical systems and a few hurricanes. Hurricane Harvey stands out the most. I was not at home. I was in the Emergency Operations Center at Seabrook City Hall for seven days straight. I could not leave due to flooded streets, even if I had tried. I had no idea what was happening at my own house. I reached out to neighbors to check on things, but even they could not clearly tell whether water had made it inside. The uncertainty was overwhelming. What gave me peace during that time was preparation. I had flood insurance. Many

people do not carry flood insurance because they believe it will never happen to them. Harvey proved otherwise. Homes outside of flood zones flooded across the region. Thankfully, my home did not experience flooding, but even if it had, I knew I was covered.
No two storms are the same. Harvey brought catastrophic rainfall. Beryl brought intense winds that had a significant impact here in The Woodlands because of our trees. We cannot predict exactly what the next storm will bring, but we can prepare.
Preparation looks different for everyone, but there are a few essentials every household should have in place:
• Water and food: One gallon of water per person per day for three to seven days, plus nonperishable food and a manual can opener.
• Medications: A full supply of prescriptions, basic first aid items and any special medical needs.
• Important documents: Copies of insurance, IDs and contacts stored in a waterproof container or digitally.
• Emergency supplies: Flashlights, batteries, phone chargers, a weather radio, cash and hygiene items.
• Plan ahead: Know evacuation routes, where you would go and how your family will communicate.
• Stay informed: Sign up for Township Alerts at thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov/alerts and monitor the National Weather Service and other media outlets for information.
• Flood insurance: Consider coverage now. Policies take 30 days to go into effect.
Preparation brings peace of mind when it matters most.
PEACE OF MIND WHILE YOU’RE AWAY
Rest easy during summer travels and sign up for Vacation Watch with your local law enforcement agency. This program allows patrol deputies to check the security of your residence while you are away. If anything out of the ordinary is found, you or your emergency contact will be notified. The frequency of these checks will be dependent upon the emergency call volume for your area. Active calls for service will always take precedence.

Memorial Day is, at its heart, a time of remembrance. It is a day set aside to honor the brave souls who gave their lives in service to our country. While it often marks the start of summer, its true meaning runs much deeper. It is a moment to pause, reflect and recognize the sacrifices that make our freedoms possible.
Here in The Woodlands, we are proud to honor that meaning each year through our annual Memorial Day in The Woodlands event. Held at Town Green Park on the Sunday prior to Memorial Day, the evening begins with the National Anthem, followed by a live performance from The Matt Powers Band. Around 7 p.m., we gather for a special keynote address and the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) Houston Honor Your Hero Ceremony.
Opportunities like our on-site care package drive allow attendees to extend their gratitude to active-duty service members.
Each year, as we gather as a community, we do more than host an event, we honor heroes, we remember their legacy and we ensure their sacrifice is never forgotten.

TESTING THE WATERS: A LOOK AT WATER QUALITY IN THE WOODLANDS
Quality water is vital to our quality of life — something easy to take for granted until it’s not. Here are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about the water coming out of your tap.
Where does our drinking water come from?
Woodlands Water Agency purchases our water from the San Jacinto River Authority (SJRA), our wholesale water provider. SJRA currently sources half from groundwater wells and half from surface water via the Groundwater Reduction Plan (GRP) Surface Water Plant on Lake Conroe. Using surface water helps to control subsidence and preserve our aquifers.
How do I know that my tap water is safe to drink?
Woodlands Water and SJRA administer over 300 tests per month to ensure our water continually meets or exceeds federal and state standards. SJRA treatment facilities also continuously monitor chlorine disinfection, pH and temperature. Every Municipal Utility District (MUD) served by Woodlands Water holds a “superior water system” rating from the state — the highest designation available.
What affects the odor or taste of my tap water?
Water is known as the “universal solvent” for good reason — it readily picks up taste and odor from naturally occurring elements like calcium, sodium and iron, and even from the
air around it. A stale taste can also develop when water sits unused in pipes or household plumbing for extended periods. Woodlands Water staff actively manage disinfection and distribution system maintenance to minimize these issues and protect that superior rating.
Maintaining proper disinfection in the distribution system is also key to odor and taste control. Woodlands Water staff focus on this as well as the operation and maintenance of the distribution system to ensure we maintain our superior water system rating.
How does Woodlands Water communicate with you about your water quality?
Each July, Woodlands Water mails a Drinking Water Quality Report to every customer. You can also find it anytime at woodlandswater.org. Reports are specific to individual MUDs and include regulated contaminants, potential health effects and how local levels compare to national standards.

May is National Bike Month, and The Woodlands Township celebrates with a variety of activities and events throughout the month. Riding a bike in The Woodlands is a fun and scenic way to explore the 220+ miles of pathways in our hometown. Whether commuting, exercising or simply enjoying nature, cyclists of all ages can enjoy riding through parks, villages and greenbelts by following the below guidelines:
• Give audible warnings when passing pathway users.
• Ride at a safe speed.
• Helmets are highly recommended and should always be worn (properly fitted) to reduce the risk of injury.
• Be predictable! Ride straight ahead.
HYDRATE & BEAT THE HEAT
While extremely common during the summer months for our geographic area, heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and dehydration can be easily prevented with proper preparation before heading outdoors.
• Drink water regularly.
• Dress for the heat.
• Take breaks.
• Avoid peak heat hours.
• Protect your skin.
• Know the warning signs of heat exhaustion.
All motorized vehicles are prohibited on the pathways, including electric scooters and bicycles. The only exceptions are motorized wheelchairs and pathway maintenance vehicles.

Q&A with Tricia Monticello Kievlan, President of Bike The Woodlands Coalition
Where in The Woodlands is your favorite place to ride your bike?
On the roads, I love riding the hills (such as they are) on Flintridge, the Branch Crossing-Terramont loop in Sterling Ridge and the brand-new striped shoulder on Lake Woodlands. Off-road, I love to ride the Spring Creek Nature Trail on the north side of Spring Creek near Grogan’s Point and the trails maintained by Bayou Land Conservancy near the Ann Snyder Trailhead south of the creek.
How would you describe your riding style?
Not fast! Growing up riding my bike in The Woodlands, I was lucky to develop good bike handling skills as I learned to maneuver around the trees on our meandering pathways, but I’ve never been a fast rider on the roads. I like to ride with my daughter to our nearest parks, ride with my dad on the roads or ride with friends on the trails. I also like to ride to run errands, whether I’m picking up my daughter from school, heading to the coffee shop or picking up groceries.
What does bike safety mean to you?
Bike safety means being proactive: It means wearing the right equipment like a helmet, using lights, signaling your movements and being aware of your surroundings. When I give safety talks at bike rodeos, I talk about how our eyes and our ears are two of our most important safety tools: We should always be looking around to see what’s ahead while we’re listening to hear what we might not be able to see yet.
How many miles a week do you ride your bike? It depends on the week and the weather, but it’s anywhere from 5-20 miles on a typical week.
How do you celebrate Bike Month?
Bike Month is an incredible opportunity to celebrate all the ways that people ride bikes in our community and to connect with people who share a love of exploring The Woodlands on two wheels. I love the neighborhood rides led by TXTRI; they’re a great way to slow down and see familiar neighborhoods with new eyes. I also love some of our newer events, like our new Bike Swap event co-hosted with the Township’s Environmental Services Department.
Bike The Woodlands Day is also special: In 2025, we reimagined the day to feature three rides — on the pathways, on the roads and on the natural-surface trails. We also honored the winners of our first-ever scholarship essay contest for students in grades 3 through 8. We’re excited about that event this year. We hope even more residents will ride to the Rob Fleming Recreation Center on Saturday, May 16.

SOCCER SHUTTLE TO THE WORLD CUP
Soccer Shuttle to the FIFA World Cup 26™
Soccer fans in The Woodlands will have a new way to get to the action this summer. The Woodlands Township is introducing the Soccer Shuttle, a convenient transportation option designed to connect residents and visitors directly to Houston Stadium (NRG) for matches associated with the FIFA World Cup 26™.
The Soccer Shuttle offers a simple and stress-free experience for ticket holders and authorized FIFA World Cup 26™ volunteers or employees. Riders must have a valid match ticket or approved credentials and a confirmed shuttle reservation to board. Standard Woodlands Express fares or walk up access will not be accepted, making advance planning essential.
Soccer Shuttle reservations can be made online at woodlandstransit.com/soccershuttle. While the shuttle fare is free through support from the Houston Galveston Area Council’s Commute Solutions program, a $8.50 administrative fee plus processing fees will apply. Seating is first come first served, and early reservations are encouraged as demand is expected to be high.
Passengers can depart from three convenient locations: The Woodlands Resort, Embassy Suites at Hughes Landing, or the Sawdust Park and Ride. Return trips from the stadium will begin as buses fill, with all departures occurring within one-hour after each match concludes.

50TH ANNUAL SOUTH COUNTY 4TH OF JULY PARADE
Celebrate freedom in The Woodlands! This year marks the 250th Anniversary of the founding of the United States of America. Here in The Woodlands, we will celebrate with numerous events to remember, celebrate and look ahead to the future of America.
A favorite Fourth of July tradition reaches a golden milestone this summer as The Woodlands and South Montgomery County welcome the 50th Annual South County 4th of July Parade, proudly presented by Waste Connections. One of the largest parades between Houston and Dallas, this hometown celebration brings together fire engines, creative floats, spirited marching bands, military units and local organizations thereby turning Market Street into a red, white and blue showcase for all ages. The parade kicks off with cannon fire at 9 a.m., with pre-parade entertainment beginning at 8 a.m.
The parade route winds through Town Center and Market Street with a prime viewing location where emcees will be stationed above the North Commons, along with announcing locations at Town Green Park, The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion and Wells Fargo Bank. This year’s theme, “America250! Join the Celebration,” puts a special spotlight on America’s 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, honoring the ideals that unite us and the history we share. This Semiquincentennial marks a unique opportunity to honor the past while inspiring innovation, service and unity for generations to come.

It’s not too early to get the swimsuits and sunscreen ready for the Alden Bridge Village Association annual Pool Party on Saturday, June 6, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Alden Bridge Park pool. It’s free to Alden Bridge residents, and the kids always have a great time. There will be food, games and entertainment.

Greetings from our College Park Board! We hope you are all enjoying going on vacations, family projects at home, summer school and athletics. The warmer weather is always challenging in being outside for long periods of time! Please be careful and always stay hydrated with plenty of water.
The Woodlands swimming pools open May 14, 2026, the same date as our annual College Park Poolooza! It will be from 1 to 4 p.m. at Harper’s Landing Park. There will be free snowcones, a bouncy house and as always, food and drinks!
Summer is our time to make memories with family and friends. Safety tip: Always be aware of your surroundings when in parking lots, and jot down where you parked at malls and grocery stores. As always, don’t engage with strangers and remain aware.
Please bring any issues you find that need attention at our monthly College Park meeting! Our meetings are held the third Thursday of each month at 6 p.m. at The Woodlands Township Have a safe and happy summer!

Our Yard of the Month program is in full swing, and we need your help to identify award-winning yards. Please email your nomination to yotm@gmva. org by the 26th of each month. In 2025, the Grogan’s Mill Village Association and The Woodlands Farmer’s Market were able to give more than $50,000 back to the community through scholarships, school donations and support for Interfaith and other local non-profits.

With hurricane season upon us, you may be considering purchasing a generator. Yes, a permit is required for all permanent installations of power generators, and there are a few important guidelines to follow.
• The unit should be placed in a spot that minimizes any impact on your neighbors.
• The top of the unit must not be taller than six feet above the natural grade.
• The unit needs to be screened from view so that it’s not visible from the street or any neighboring properties.
• You may be allowed to place a generator up to three feet into the rear and side yard easements.

Thanks to residents supporting The Woodlands Farmer’s Market, the Grogan’s Mill Village Association is able to support scholarships, schools, community programs, the Interfaith Food Pantry and more. The market is open every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. during May, rain or shine, at 7 Switchbud Place in the Grogan’s Mill Village Center. Starting in June, the market switches to summer hours of 9 a.m. to noon. In addition to our regular lineup of vendors, on most Saturdays we have live music and a food truck.
