Soar Into the Most Wonderful Time of the Year

The cool December weather makes for a comfortable adventure at Texas TreeVentures, located behind The Recreation Center at Rob Fleming Park in the Village of Creekside Park in The Woodlands, TX. www.texastreeventures.com
If you’re having family and friends in town this holiday season, be the host with the most and bring them to one of the most unique attractions around that happens to be right here in your backyard! While many adventure courses across the country close for a winter off-season, Texas TreeVentures has the luxury of operating all year long.
Our summer season may be warmer than most, but luckily, that means we usually enjoy a milder winter. In fact, many prefer climbing at Texas TreeVentures on a crisp December day. For that reason, Texas TreeVentures will be open daily from December 15 – 31, 2023, with the exceptions of Christmas Eve (December 24) and Christmas Day (December 25).
Texas TreeVentures will offer nine consecutive days of back-toback timeslots, kicking things off on Friday, December 15, 2023, with a Glow in the Park night climb. Reservations are strongly recommended and can be made online at www.texastreeventures. com. If you can’t quite commit to a reservation during those last few days between holiday shopping or gingerbread house baking, the course will reopen on December 26, 2023, with timeslots available daily for the rest of the year.
Additionally, give the gift of adventure this holiday season! Digital gift cards are available online and physical gift cards can be purchased in person. These make great stocking stuffers and offer the flexibility of giving the gift of a Texas TreeVentures experience without having to choose a date and time.
We look forward to seeing you this holiday season at Texas TreeVentures!

Holiday Garbage Service and Tree Collection
By Brooke Guthrie
In observance of Christmas and New Year’s Day, there will be no trash services on Monday, December 25, 2023, or Monday, January 1, 2024. All curbside services will be moved to the next weekday, including yard waste, trash, recycling and bulk pickup. If your service day is Monday, then your holiday service day will be Tuesday, December 26, 2023, and Tuesday, January 2, 2024. Every trash day will be pushed one day ahead for two weeks over Christmas and New Year’s. Please see the schedule below.
Regular pick-up schedule will resume Monday, January 8, 2024.
Extra Garbage
If you find yourself with more household trash than your cart can accommodate, please purchase extra “pink tags” from Kroger for $1.78 at the Cochran’s Crossing, Sterling Ridge or Alden Ridge locations, or The Woodlands Township offices. Place the extra trash with pink tags next to your curbside cart on your regular service day. Each bag must weigh no more than 40 pounds and be no wider than your cart for it to be picked up. Have something bigger than your cart? Schedule a bulk pickup (see below)
Extra Recycling
The Woodlands Recycling Center will be open the usual schedule of Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Woodlands Recycling Center accepts the same items as curbside recycling which includes cardboard (flattened), cans, plastic containers (#1-5 and 7 only), paper (assorted and clean), and glass bottles and jars. The Woodlands Recycling Center also accepts yard waste, which includes lawn clippings, leaves and branches.
Christmas Trees
Unflocked Christmas trees can be composted with yard debris. Be sure to remove tree stands, all decorations and lights, and trim to 6 feet if taller. Place the tree on the curb on your regular service day to be collected in the yard trimming truck.
Flocked Christmas trees must be landfilled. You can schedule a bulk pickup through Waste Management at 800-800-5804 or cssatex@wm.com. Contact Waste Management two business days ahead of your regular pickup day.
Trees for TreeVentures!
Bring trees without decorations, flocking or tinsel to The Recreation Center at Rob Fleming Park parking lot, 6464
Creekside Forest Drive, or the Research Forest Park and Ride, 3900 Marsico Place. These trees are chipped and used as flooring at TexasTreeVentures.

Skating Through Time at The Woodlands Ice Rink A Brief History of The Ice Rink at The Woodlands Town Center
By Mary Connell
People from colder climates who move to Texas may not expect to ice skate during the holidays, but in The Woodlands, people have been ice skating for decades! This time of year, The Woodlands offers the perfect place to grab some skates and hot chocolate and glide into the holiday season.
Currently, The Ice Rink at The Woodlands Town Center is located adjacent to The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion near the southwest corner of Lake Robbins and Six Pines. A partnership between the Township and the Pavilion created the facility, and it opened to the public in 2016. Every year, the Township offers skating at The Ice Rink from mid-November to mid-January. In the summer months, the location of The Ice Rink is a private event venue, operated by the Pavilion.
The 21,000-square-foot permanent
multipurpose facility features ice skating in a main room with a stateof-the-art sound system and tables for parties and concessions. Skates are available for rent, as well as skating lessons. Free parking is available in the Gold Lot and Town Center Parking Garage at 2005 Lake Robbins Drive, The Woodlands, Texas 77380.
The Ice Rink has a long history of bringing joy and holiday magic to the community and is one of three that have existed in The Woodlands.
The Woodlands first shopping center, known as The Wharf, in the Grogan’s Mill Village Center, was the
initial location for The Woodlands Ice Rink in the late 1970s and 80s. The rink served as a gathering place for those who could skate or wanted to learn. It was part of the shopping center that included an ice cream balcony overlooking the rink, Cunningham’s Drug Store, Jamail’s Grocery Store, and eclectic shops and artists’ workshops. There was even a famous pop artist, Peter Max, who contributed designs for the walls and floor of The Ice Rink.
Much to the dismay of the local skaters, the rink closed in the 1980s, and The Woodlands was without a rink until 1999. That year, a new Ice Rink opened on the southside of The Woodlands Mall where Fleming’s and The Woodlands Waterway are now located. It was a small rink with a skating surface of 60 x 100 feet. The Ice Rink stayed there until 2002 when development of

The Woodlands Waterway and the expansion of The Woodlands Mall necessitated a move.
The Ice Rink then relocated to the corner of Six Pines Drive and Lake Robbins Drive (now the location of Kirby’s Ice House) and expanded to a much larger tented, skating surface of 80 x 120 feet.
The seasonal tented Ice Rink was funded by sponsorships and produced by Town Center Improvement District initially, followed by The Woodlands Convention and Visitors Bureau and currently the Township. The operator was a locally-based company, Spectrum Events, the operator of the Ice Rink today.
The yearly construction of the tented Ice Rink marked the beginning of the holidays each year as it was surrounded by holiday lights and festivities. During cold weather, a visitor to the Ice Rink could almost feel that they were at the North Pole while skaters glided and twirled, or in some cases, did the best they could.
Today, The Ice Rink at The Woodlands Town Center is climatecontrolled and available to all who would like to get into the holiday spirit on ice. It is another great reason to feel thankful and blessed to live in The Woodlands—you can enjoy 70-80 degree temperatures outside and still go ice skating—the best of both worlds for the holidays!

Make Room for Emergency Vehicles
Navigating Through Residential Streets
Over the past several months, public safety has seen an increase in vehicles parking on residential streets.
In an emergency, time is of the essence and for emergency vehicles, safely arriving at a call for service quickly is imperative. Most streets in The Woodlands are wide enough to accommodate a vehicle or vehicles parking on one side of the street; however, the problem occurs when vehicles are parking on both sides of the street which causes impeded sight lines and makes movement of vehicles slow and difficult. Additionally, it causes an unsafe environment for pedestrians, and especially small children, to move freely around the neighborhood.
Parking on both sides of the street inhibits the safe movement of fire apparatus, ambulances and law enforcement vehicles. Nonemergency vehicles are also impacted, including garbage trucks, school buses and mail delivery.
Please park in your driveway or garage whenever possible. For more information, please contact The Woodlands Township Neighborhood Services Department at 281-210-3800 or visit www.thewoodlandstownship-tx. gov/neighborhoodservices. Also, follow us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ TownshipNeighborhoodWatch.

Alden Bridge
It’s the most wonderful time of year — and time to judge holiday lights! Yes, it’s time again for the Holiday Lighting and Decorating Contest, and Alden Bridge has some of the most beautifully decorated homes in The Woodlands. If you see a home in Alden Bridge that looks like a winner, send your nomination with address and name (if known) to abvainfo@gmail.com. Judges will review the nominations between December 11 through 16, 2023. All nominations are due by December 10, 2023, so be sure to leave your lights on every night so we don’t miss your hard work. We will select one Best Home winner and one Best Neighborhood winner. Awards will be presented to the winners on December 18, 2023.
We wouldn’t have a village association without a group of great volunteers, and we have seats available on our Alden Bridge Village Association Board. It truly only requires a limited amount of time each month. The great thing is, you learn first-hand what’s going on in your village and you act as a representative to share that information with your neighbors and friends in Alden Bridge. If interested, please email abvainfo@gmail.com, and we’ll tell you more about the opportunity as well as schedule a time to meet.
We truly have one of the best places to live during the holidays. We always stress safety, but especially this month when so many things are tempting to criminals, so stay safe and be aware of your surroundings while you’re out and about. Use the Sheriff’s Department Vacation Watch if you’re taking a
holiday vacation, and don’t forget to lock your house and car doors. Don’t leave any packages visible in the car while shopping. Unfortunately, most car burglaries occur when parked cars are left unlocked.
Our most heartfelt thanks go out to everyone who contributed to our village association in any way during 2023, with special thanks to all of our event and program sponsors! Your support is much appreciated, and we look forward to working with you again in 2024. We have a very active sponsor program, and if your business would like to sponsor us (money goes to scholarships), please contact abvainfo@gmail.com.
Joining our electronic mailing list allows you to receive our monthly newsletter — just send your email address to abvainfo@gmail.com. We promise not to share your address. Also, please visit our website, www.aldenbridge.org, and like our very active Facebook page.
We take a little break from our monthly board and residents meeting in December, so the next meeting is set for 6:30 p.m. on January 9, 2024, at The Woodlands Township, 2801 Technology Forest Blvd.
Here’s to a joyous holiday season, Alden Bridge!

College Park
Happy Holidays, residents, from our College Park Village Association board. We know everyone is out there shopping, decorating, and going to holiday parties. It’s a special time, but also a time to be extra cautious when driving and parking. Know your surroundings and do not
hesitate to call 9-1-1 if you ever see suspicious activity.
College Park residents always take pride in their homes and usually are ready to decorate their front yards and houses after Thanksgiving. Our College Park board members will be out December 11 and 12 to vote on the best decorated house and also the best decorated street. Our wonderful, shiny, flashing fire truck will be with the board on Wednesday, December 13 to bring the award sign around 6 p.m.
Our College Park board is short two area representatives. Unfortunately, we had two members who have moved on and if anyone is interested in becoming a board member, please attend our monthly meeting the third Monday of each month at 6 p.m. at The Woodlands Township office. We would love to see you there!
Have a wonderful time with family and friends and stay healthy! Happy Holidays and Happy 2024!

Grogan’s Mill
In lieu of a Holiday Lighting contest, the Grogan’s Mill Village Association Board allocates money each year to decorate our village signs for the holidays. This month, you will see the Grogan’s Mill Village signs adorned with decorated garlands so that the whole community can enjoy.
The Grogan’s Mill Village Association will be awarding scholarships this spring. Scholarships are open to all graduating high school and current college students who are residents of Grogan’s Mill at the time of application. Applicants must also be in good standing at their school at the time
GARBAGE COLLECTION SCHEDULE CHANGES THIS MONTH
In observance of the Christmas and New Year holidays, solid waste collection services will be suspended on Monday, December 25, 2023, and Monday, January 1, 2024. All services are affected—trash, recycling, yard trimmings and bulk pickup. Please see the Holiday Trash Service and Tree Collection article on page 8 for more information and the chart detailing your pick-up schedule. of application. Applicants may attend either a two- or four-year college or vocational school.
Scholarships will be awarded based on the following criteria: financial need, a strong sense of community involvement and good citizenship, extracurricular or other activities and accomplishments, and counselor and academic administration recommendations.
Applications may be obtained from school guidance counselors, the Grogan’s Mill website www. grogansmill.org or from any Grogan’s Mill village board member. Completed applications must be received by March 28, 2024.
The Woodlands Farmer’s Market recently donated $3,000 to each of the four schools in Grogan’s Mill Village (Lamar, Hailey, Wilkerson, Knox) for a total donation of $12,000. Pictured are Emily Hoppel, Director, Grogan’s Mill Village Association, Hailey Elementary School Principal Tracy Horne, and Vince Frederick, Vice President of Grogan’s Mill Village Association.
On November 11, The Woodlands Farmers’ Market celebrated its 15th year in operation. The market was created to bring local produce, meat and eggs, locally produced food and art by local artisans to the residents of
The Woodlands. It provides a venue for neighbors to meet neighbors, enjoy music, eat delicious food and purchase items for later use.
Christmas is around the corner; the market is a great place to buy Christmas gifts. Many local artisans have been added to the December lineup. This community event meets 50 Saturdays a year. Proceeds from the market fund scholarships for local students, support for local schools and support for the local food bank.
With cooler days here, The Woodlands Farmers’ Market is still offering hot deals on fruits, vegetables, honey, meats, crafts, food and more. The market is open every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., rain or shine, at 7 Switchbud Place in the Grogan’s Mill Village Center. It will be closed on Saturday, December 30. Most Saturdays, the market has two or more food trucks for your breakfast or lunch. Panther Creek
We hope that you and your neighbors had an opportunity to
participate in our local National Night Out event in October. One notable gathering was hosted by John and Jeanie Colvin in the Havenridge neighborhood. Neighbors gathered and became re-acquainted. The street became a bicycle circus and then a ball field as the children all enjoyed the party. Neighbors, both newly arrived and others here since the early ‘80s, got to meet and to know each other better. The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department stopped by to remind the group about the free Vacation Watch program and several other home security tips.
The gathering also featured special guest, Mrs. Jan Hofer, who has provided decades of counseling services through Interfaith and many of our local employers. The Panther Creek board presented her with a special token of appreciation for her contributions to so many residents of The Woodlands. She was given a special signed edition of a large book of beautiful scenes of The Woodlands, previously autographed by George Mitchell. Her story was but one of an endless number of our neighbors who, each in their own special way, contribute to the quality of life we enjoy here in the spirit originally envisioned by Mr. Mitchell so many years ago. Count their contributions to us all in your blessings this holiday season.
Join in displaying that spirit as you decorate your homes and yards for the holidays. Members of your Panther Creek Village Association Board will be viewing all the decorated homes and neighborhoods midDecember. All will be appreciated, and one home and one neighborhood will receive special recognition again this year. Will it be yours?
Our monthly board meetings resume January 11, 2024, at The Woodlands Township, 2801 Technology Forest Blvd. Please come visit in person or at our website, www.panthercreekvillage.org.

TREES ON THE TRAIL: Black Cherry
Black cherry (Prunus serotina), also commonly called wild cherry, is one of our most important native trees. Its ecological value is perhaps exceeded only by the oak. This adaptable tree can be found throughout the state, but grows best in deep, well-drained soils with a spot in full sun or part shade. This deciduous tree can grow up to 100 feet tall, although it is frequently found as an intermediate species in the forest canopy around 50 feet. The unique, dark, scaly bark of black cherry makes it easy to identify in the forest this time of year and the beautiful wood is used for cabinets, furniture and flooring.
Black cherries are the host plant to more than 450 species of butterflies and moths, including many charismatic species such as the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail and the ironically named Red-Spotted Purple. In addition to being a host plant for caterpillars, white showy flowers bloom March through June, attracting an array of pollinators with an abundance of nectar.
This species produces dark, almost black fruits the size of a blueberry in long clusters. These fruits are an important food source for 33 species of birds and many mammals. They can be eaten raw and are commonly used

in jellies, jams, pies, syrups and even wine! While the benefits to pollinators and wildlife are vast with this species, it should be noted that the leaves, twigs, bark and seeds are poisonous to livestock and household pets such as cats and dogs.
The benefits and unique aesthetic of the black cherry tree would make a great addition to any home landscape. If you want to plant one in your yard, be sure to attend the annual Arbor Day Tree Giveaway on January 27, 2024, from 9 a.m. to noon at Rob Fleming Park and get your very own black cherry tree seedling!

The Woodlands Fire Department Celebrates 50 Years of Service
As we begin to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of The Woodlands, we also celebrate and remember the many organizations and community groups that were also founded 50 years ago.
Let’s take a step back in time and learn about the history of The Woodlands Fire Department, established in late 1973.
20 THE WOODLANDS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE DECEMBER 2023
The original Central Station opened in 1980.
Community leaders celebrated the opening of Central Station in 2013.
The history of The Woodlands Fire Department begins with the early development of The Woodlands by Mitchell Energy. Safety has always been a priority for The Woodlands, and so the fire department began with the hiring of paramedics and the formation of The Woodlands Volunteer Fire Department. The volunteer staff worked out of a trailer located on Grogan’s Mill Road.
In January 1975, the department hired its first paid chief: Bill Neill. Chief Neill, Assistant Chief Allen Groda, three firefighters, three dispatchers and one clerk comprised the first full-time paid staff of The Woodlands Fire Department. With a growing community, the department added trailers for firefighter quarters, office space and a shed for the pumpers and ambulance.
On September 6, 1980, the community dedicated the Public Safety Center at 9951 Grogan’s Mill Road, and The Woodlands Fire Department at last had a permanent station. Central Fire Station was now home to a fire chief, two captains, nine firefighters, five dispatchers and one office manager. There were also 30 volunteer firefighters and EMS personnel.
Fire Chief Bill Neill left the department in the spring of 1981, and Steve Dossett was selected to replace him. Bruce Woods served as the next chief from 1989 to 1998. In 1995, under the leadership of Bruce Woods, the department earned an ISO 4 rating as the department began its journey to ISO 1. John Mullin became the fourth fire chief in October 1998. After heading the department for six years
and improving the ISO rating to a 3, Chief Mullin returned to his hometown in Littleton, Colorado. In January 2005, Alan B. Benson became the fifth Fire Chief for The Woodlands. During his tenure, Stations 6, 7 and 8 came online, along with the Emergency Training Center in 2008 and a new, modern, Central Station completed in 2013. Also in 2013, The Woodlands Fire Department achieved an ISO 1 rating, the highest rating available.
The Woodlands Fire Department celebrated 40 years of service in 2013 with eight fire stations, nine companies, and a total of 132 fully paid certified firefighters giving The Woodlands Fire Department a total of 159 members. continued on next page

Central Station awaits demolition in 2012 to make room for the new Central Station, pictured at right.
The Emergency Training Center completed its fifth year of service and Fire Comm, the department’s emergency communications center, handled fire calls for The Woodlands and all of Montgomery County.
Chief Benson retired in 2019 and in December of 2019, The Woodlands Township hired Palmer Buck as Fire Chief. In February of 2023 The Woodlands Fire Department added 16 new firefighters and a 10th fire company based out of Station 5 in Sterling Ridge. The Woodlands Fire Department now has 163 firefighters, 20 dispatchers and a support staff of 6 for a total of 189 team members. The department continues to maintain ISO Class 1 rating.
As of December 2022, of the 1,520 fire departments in the State of Texas, there are only 90 Class 1 departments and in the United States, out of over 45,000 fire departments, there are only 474 Class 1 departments. This top rating reflects the department’s and The Township’s commitment to providing the highest level of service and safety to our community.

Composting is Key to a Healthy Landscape
Amazing changes can occur in your landscape when you learn how to make compost from kitchen scraps and use it on your lawn and garden. Compost is the foundation of dreamy landscapes. The microbes in composted organic materials start working in your yard and garden right away when you add it to your soil. Best of all, you can create your own compost in the back yard.
Here are some of the benefits of compost cited by The U.S. Composting Council and the Association of American Plant Food Control officials:
• Soil improvement means more nutrients are available to plants in the form they can use.
• Improved nutrient uptake means stronger, longer roots.
• Healthy soil captures and stores moisture better for plants to use as needed.
The benefits to you include conserving water, using less fertilizer,
harvesting heartier vegetables or growing beautiful blooms, and saving money.
If you are ready to get started on making your landscape the belle of the block, join us for a free Backyard Composting Class. Once a month until March, The Woodlands Township Environmental Services Department hosts a class in collaboration with

Holiday Lighting and Decorating Contest
Celebrate the season with the annual Holiday
Lighting and Decorating Contest! Most of the village associations coordinate their own contest with support from The Woodlands Township and The Woodlands Fire Department. To enter the contest, just decorate the outside of your home for viewing by the judges during the month of December.
There are usually two categories in each participating village: Best Home and Best Neighborhood. A neighborhood is broadly defined as a few homes located in close proximity, or an entire cul-de-sac or subdivision. Best Home prizes include a yard sign and plaque. A yard sign and other prizes are usually awarded to Best Neighborhood.
Members of each village association serve as contest judges. The selection of winners is left to the sole discretion of the judges. Please check with your village association for more details about your respective village contest.
Please remember that winter holiday decorations and lights may be illuminated no earlier than the second Monday in November through January 15 of the following year. Seasonal displays must also be limited in scope and not become a nuisance or annoyance to the neighborhood.

Celebrate the Holidays by Going Green
By Brooke Guthrie
The holidays are filled with festivities that bring presents, gift wrap and greeting cards. Unfortunately, a lot of these beautiful things end up in the trash. In a study done by Stanford University, Americans throw away 25 percent more during the holiday season than the rest of the year. Here are some options to help you green up your gifts and give new life to old treasures.
Green Gift Wrap
Check out this easy Gift Wrap Guide to learn what makes for great wrapping paper, and how you can make your own recyclable wrap at home. Scan the QR code for ideas.
Donate and Recycle Your Old Treasures
Give new life to your gently used items like clothing, furniture, appliances and electronics. Help local families in need — many organizations will arrange a pickup. Please see the guide for a full list of local organizations accepting donations and their phone numbers www.thewoodlandstownship-tx.gov/donationguide.
Recycle old light bulbs, batteries, eyeglasses, electronics, Styrofoam and more — all can be recycled at numerous local partners. Download the Recycle More Guide for a complete list of the locations and phone numbers at www.thewoodlandstownshiptx.gov/recyclemore.

Winter Sewer Averaging: The Key to Controlling Your Costs Year-round
Woodlands Water rates are among the lowest in the region, but that doesn’t mean we enjoy paying the bill. Fortunately, there’s a simple way to lower your monthly bill now and throughout the following year. The solution is known as Winter Sewer Averaging.
To understand how it works, first consider that sewer is charged separately from water on your bill. However, the amount you pay for sewer is based on your water consumption. Use less water and you’ll pay less for both.
Here’s where Winter Sewer Averaging plays a role. Average monthly water consumption in December, January and February determines your maximum monthly sewer charge for the next 12 months. Winter months are used because that’s when water is largely consumed indoors. This water returns to the sewer system for treatment, whereas outdoor use does not.
Winter sewer averaging offers a real advantage for homeowners. By calculating sewer bills based on winter water use, households are shielded from spikes in bills during warmer months, when outdoor watering increases.
Consider that the average household in The Woodlands uses 6,000 gallons of water a month in the winter and 14,000 gallons a month in the summer. If you’re the average person, Winter Sewer Averaging caps your monthly sewer charge at 6,000 gallons, even in July. Is your water usage lower than the average person’s? Then your cap will be even lower, and you’ll save more money.
