At The Wooden Floor, we love dance. It’s powerful. It has the ability to encourage our youth to think differently about themselves, to push through obstacles, and emerge as strong and confident leaders. It’s why our students call us their second home, why on the dance floor they feel supported, able to embody who they really are. Dance offers a new beginning, a new slate. A Sunrise.

We are so passionate about dance, because we believe that it breaks down barriers.

It allows our students to have a voice, to be seen, to create art, and to know that they matter. It’s why, when partnered with academic programs, with mentoring, and with family support, 100 percent of our graduates do what only 30 percent of their socioeconomics peers have done for eight consecutive years—finish high school on time and enroll in higher education.

Dance is why for 30 years The Wooden Floor has remained important, providing a solid platform for advancement and success. Dance moves our youth. Forward.

Sophie, Class of 2008 “I didn’t grow up in the best or the worst neighborhood, but there was plenty of room for me to fail. I was nine years old when I auditioned for The Wooden Floor. I don’t think I expected my life to be so impacted by dance, but I’m glad I had a healthy outlet to express myself and to become the best I could be.

Being part of The Wooden Floor teaches you so much more than dance. With my mom being disabled, my father giving up his parental rights, and my stepfather passing away, I understood that I didn’t have to become a product of my environment.

Through dance, I became strong, stronger than I could have ever imagined; mentally and physically. I learned through hard work, I could do anything I wished to pursue. I am the first person in my family to go on to college. I am studying Multimedia Communications at Academy of Art University in San Francisco.

The Wooden Floor gave me stability, a sense of family outside of my home, and much more than I could have ever dreamed of. For that, I am forever grateful.”

Welcome

to the Wooden Floor’s 30th Annual Concert. As we celebrate three decades of changing lives through dance, we use this milestone to reflect on the question, “Why?” Why do we do what we do, why do our outcomes prove so life altering for the youth we serve, why has our work been so important over the last 30 years, and most important, why do we need your help to make the next 30 years even more impactful in our community?

Our achievements in these 30 years can be attributed to a profound love for our community and the belief that all children, regardless of the circumstances they are born into, have the potential to thrive and make a positive contribution to society if the door to opportunity is made available to them. Believing in our youth, mentoring them along their difficult path, and investing time and resources will give them the tools to open that door of opportunity and allow these youth to prove to themselves that they can reach their true potential.

Why do we need your continued help? Because your help matters to keep The Wooden Floor strong and viable in our community. We need your help because our youth thrive when they know people care about them, and they show their appreciation by working even harder and breaking new boundaries that they never knew were possible. Working together, we hope the next 30 years will broaden the reach of The Wooden Floor to help our community build on the strength of its youth.

In1983,

our Founder, Beth Burns, set out to use innovative dancemaking as a catalyst for transformation in under-served communities. In 2013 the impact continues as we celebrate 30 Years of Changing Lives through Dance.

Our students continue to tell us the Annual Concert experience is one of the most pivotal-changing moments in their young lives. And we hope it serves as an inspiration for you, our community of supporters and families. Through your attendance and applause, you tell our students that they are heard.

Your encouragement changes the way they perceive themselves and the way they see the world around them.

Since its inception, The Wooden Floor has been honored to receive both national and local awards for our innovative model. But the real honor is when our students share how The Wooden Floor has changed the course of their lives.

At our 1st Annual Step Beyond Breakfast, Itzel, a graduating senior, shared about her experiences over the past eight years with The Wooden Floor, and her plans for college, as she is the first in her family to do so. With confidence she said, “I aspire to find happiness by doing what I love and being a woman that uses her education to change the world around her. Next year I will attend the University of California, Irvine, where I plan to pursue my love of Math by majoring in Civil Engineering. This career choice would enable me to help the development of our cities and aid in the growth of developing countries that lack engineers.”

We believe that our students, through dance and access to higher education, will not only change their lives for the better, but they will create a massive ripple effect as they become change-agents within their families, in their neighborhoods, our community, and globally.

My wife, Socorro, and I thank you for attending our 30th Annual Concert—we hope you will be moved by the energy and emotion that will shine on stage tonight.

Nearly all 375 year-round students of The Wooden Floor have access to free:

Dance education and performance opportunities • 52 dance classes a week with professional dance faculty and live music accompanists

• Opportunities to work with internationallyrecognized choreographers and designers, and perform in various professional settings, such as the Irvine Barclay Theatre and REDCAT at Walt Disney Concert Hall

• Residencies, master classes, and workshops by nationally-recognized artists and dance companies

• Opportunities to attend special summer dance programs such as the Limón Institute Summer Workshop, the Backhausdance Summer Intensive, and the American Dance Festival

• Dance Free Weeks, week-long introductory dance workshops held in disadvantaged schools throughout Santa Ana and neighboring cities, serving approximately 3,000 students

The Wooden Floor, then known as Saint Joseph Ballet, is founded as a pilot summer dance program by Beth Burns, a sister at the time with the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange.

The organization hosts its first dance concert, Dreams Come True, at the Santa Ana Police Annex, which becomes an annual event. Future performances feature costumes from accomplished costume designer Jennifer Vaughan.

After only two years in existence, the organization is placed in the top six artsfor-youth organizations nationally by the Dayton Hudson Foundation.

Donald McKayle, a Tonyand Emmy-nominated choreographer, joins The Wooden Floor’s Board of Directors, raising the artistic profile of the organization.

After performing in several venues in Orange County, The Wooden Floor begins to hold its Annual Concert at the Irvine Barclay Theatre each year.

James F. Ingalls, a respected and prolific lighting designer known for his work in New York’s Metropolitan Opera and Lincoln Center, lights the Annual Concert for the first time and still continues to do so.

The Wooden Floor begins to invite outside choreographers to create new works with our students, including Sally Silvers, Nami Yamamoto, Susan Rethorst, and John Heginbotham, among others.

The José Limón Dance Company performs a residency at The Wooden Floor, culminating in a collaborative performance with our young dancers.

The Wooden Floor performs for the first time at REDCAT, a prominent interdisciplinary contemporary arts center at Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles.

The organization performs for the 2nd time at REDCAT, following a staging of repertoire from the Merce Cunningham Dance Company in conjunction with acclaimed multimedia artist Bill Viola at the Studio at Sage Hill.

Steve Paxton, iconic and monumental figure in dance improvisation, is in residence for two weeks with the students of The Wooden Floor.

The Wooden Floor celebrates its 30th Annual Concert with new work from guest choreographers Ivy Baldwin and Mark Haim, who join the already impressive list of artistic collaborators.

2006 Melanie Ríos Glaser, a Fulbright Scholar, Kennedy Center Fellow, and the organization’s first guest choreographer recruited in 1999, is named Artistic Director after Burns retires.

The Wooden Floor introduces New Dance, a contemporary dance festival featuring fresh work from local artists performed in the organization’s Studio Theatre.

| What to Expect

What to Expect Those of you who already know The Wooden Floor understand that our concerts are far from the sphere of the ordinary. Because we are passionate about what we do, we get very excited by first time audience members too, some of whom might be new to contemporary dance and our approach to dance-making. With that in mind, I have articulated answers to questions that I hear often. I hope it helps to bring you closer to these deeply conceived dances made by thoughtful and committed youth and artists.

Melanie Ríos Glaser, Artistic Director & Co-CEO , The Wooden Floor What is this kind of dance?

Modern dance began in the late 19th century, primarily in the United States and Germany. Like modern art and music, it is often experimental and iconoclastic. Because it’s been around for more than a hundred years, most of the pioneering forms are considered ‘classical’ modern.

‘Contemporary dance’ is frequently used to refer to dance that is choreographed today. If you really want to talk shop, you can use the terms ‘new dance’ or ‘experimental dance’.

Why are the dancers barefoot?

Isadora Duncan, modern dance pioneer, began to dance barefoot as a symbol of liberation. Being barefoot allows you to be in contact with the ground, a salient trait of contemporary dance.

Why does The Wooden Floor perform contemporary dance?

New work is created in collaboration with the dancers. The choreographers commissioned by The Wooden Floor are keenly focused on bringing our young artists into the creative process. The dance includes who they are and what they have to say. We value inventiveness and exploration over imitation, primarily because there’s so much more learning and growth involved.

In ballet there’s often a story line, these dances don’t seem to have a narrative. What do they mean?

Through reflecting on associations and sensations that arise within you while you watch, you can construct your own meaning—or simply enjoy what is going on—like watching nature. What is your experience? The “you” is the subjective experience that contemporary art encourages us to tap into. There might not be a story or “message” in the dances but a multiplicity of possible interpretations and meanings—isn’t that fun?

Do I have to study contemporary dance to “get it”?

Not at all! New audiences may stumble because they try too hard. Do keep an open mind though, as the work intends to be thought-provoking. It is not of the lighter entertainment variety. It was created for deeper nourishment, and so may require more chewing and slower digestion for full savoring.

Why is The Wooden Floor’s Annual Concert important?

We bring choreographers who are shaping the world of contemporary dance into an intense artmaking process with the young dancers in our program. The Wooden Floor’s compelling vision also draws a remarkable group of artistic collaborators, who together design the lighting, costumes, and sets. These artists are among the best in their field! Minority youth have a voice through our dances, they bring their background and identity to a world class art-making process. The performances break down ethnic, gender, and age stereotypes about who can inspire, create, perform, and contribute to the evolution of the genre of contemporary dance.

| The Dances

About the Dances Time-lapse Alphabet Choreographer: Ivy Baldwin Collaborating closely with her cast, Ivy Baldwin choreographs a new dance that is sculptural and exuberant, regal and lonely, chaotic and contemplative. Ornate hand and arm dances, inspired by Renaissance architecture, exist in the same world as underwater slow-motion mirroring, galloping herds, thrashing couples, and slumping wanderers.

Utilizing this multi-talented cast, Minneapolis-based sound designer Justin Jones is creating an original score that includes recordings of the cast playing various instruments, singing, and creating sound effects with their voices and bodies.

The Dances

Billowing Bubbles/REMIX Choreographer: Melanie Ríos Glaser A newfangled dance emerges as Melanie Ríos Glaser uses the concepts of appropriation and recycling of movement. Some phrases are a response to snippets of dances made by her favorite choreographers. As an ode to the past, the piece includes some sections of the 2002 dance The Music Came Last, adapted to a new context. Amidst scenes from action films, stylized wrestling matches, and sweet duets, the charming dancers break through imaginary barriers to form unforeseen lines, circles, curves, and clusters. With a sound design score by Karinne Keithley Syers, this medley of movement prompts results in a quirky collage. Above all else, with over 100 young dancers the piece is a celebratory, unwieldy romp in honor of The Wooden Floor’s 30th Anniversary.

The Land of Nodding Choreographer: Mark Haim Mark Haim’s fourth work for The Wooden Floor, The Land of Nodding, is a collaboration with 35 students, ranging in age from 10 to 17. Using movements generated by the dancers through verbal instructions and images, Haim assembled solos, duets, trios and small groups, each with their own distinctive moods, but all related to the source material of instructions. Overlaying the assemblage of dances with a collage of mysterious and dreamy pieces of primarily classical music, The Land of Nodding, like a good fairy tale, is absurd, menacing, whimsical, sweet, and not to scale.

Justin Jones

Choreographer is based in New York City and the founder of Ivy Baldwin Dance. Ivy has received commissions from New York Live Arts, The Chocolate Factory, Dance Theater Workshop, Dixon Place, and Dance New Amsterdam.

Her work has also been presented by Lincoln Center Out of Doors, New Museum, Movement Research, Symphony Space, and La MaMa E.T.C. and has toured internationally including: Tanz im August (Germany) and Dans Contemporan Festival (Romania). Ivy has been recognized with various awards including: Jerome Foundation, Tell Foundation, New York Foundation for the Arts, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, and Trust for Mutual Understanding, and fellowships from the Bogliasco Foundation (Italy), ArtistNe(s)t (Romania), Sugar Salon (NYC), and the Bessie Schönberg Fellowship at The Yard. Ivy is a graduate of the North Carolina School of the Arts and NYU Tisch School of the Arts MFA program. www.ivybaldwindance.org.

Rehearsal Assistant earned her BFA in Dance Performance from Chapman University and has been dancing professionally with Backhausdance since its inception in 2003. She has been on the faculty at The Wooden Floor since 2006, teaching both ballet and modern.

Choreographer has been making dances for over 30 years. His dances have been presented nationally and internationally at The Kennedy Center (DC), the American Dance Festival (NC), the ArtDanThe Festival in Paris, On The Boards (WA), The Danspace Project (NYC), The Munye Theater (S. Korea), Theater for the Young Spectator (Russia), and by companies such as the Nederlands Dans Theater, Ballett Frankfurt, The Joffrey Ballet, and the José Limón Dance Company.

He is the recipient of two NEA Fellowships, a NYFA Fellowship, and has received support from The Trust for Mutual Understanding, NPN, the Jerome Foundation, and DanceUSA. This is his fourth work for The Wooden Floor and he is, as always, overjoyed to be back working with these fantastic young artists.

Composer is a multifaceted dance artist who makes sound for his own choreography and for others including Ivy Baldwin, Chris Schlichting, and Chris Yon. He has danced in choreography by Body Cartography Project, Morgan Thorson, and Chris Yon, and was a member of Tere O’Connor Dance from 2001-2004. His choreography has been presented at The Southern Theater, the Walker Art Center, La MaMa E.T.C., and EMPAC. Justin is also the Artistic Associate for Young Dance, a youth modern dance company in Minneapolis.

Keith Bangs Technical Director holds an MFA from the Yale School of Drama and is the production manager for the UC Irvine Claire Trevor School of the Arts. Recent work includes technical consultant for the Field Station Theatre in Los Angeles and the European tours of the Transversal Theatre Company.

Kristen Coen

Stage Manager is thrilled to be joining The Wooden Floor for another year. She has worked with South Coast Repertory, Laguna Playhouse, The Irvine Barclay Theatre, Little Fish Theatre, The Actor’s Fund, The American Coast Theatre Company, and numerous other dance companies in Southern California.

Melanie Ríos Glaser Choreographer currently serves as the Artistic Director and CoCEO of The Wooden Floor in Santa Ana, California. Born and raised in Guatemala, she received her BFA from the Juilliard School, was named a Kennedy Center Fellow, and was a Fulbright Scholar in Paris. She has been involved with experimental dance, improvisation, and performance for twenty years, and her work has been widely presented internationally. She enjoys curating and volunteering expertise on issues related to nonprofit organizations.

James F. Ingalls Lighting Designer has designed eleven concerts for The Wooden Floor since 1996. Recent projects include The Master Builder (with John Tuturro, Brooklyn Academy of Music), The Big Knife (with Bobby Cannavale, Roundabout Theatre/NYC), Sense and Sensibility, The Musical (Denver Center Theatre Company), Perpetual Dawn and To Make Crops Grow (Paul Taylor Dance Company), John Adams’ The Gospel According to the Other Mary (Los Angeles Philharmonic, Gustavo Dudamel, conductor; Peter Sellars, director), Curse of the Starving Class (Long Wharf Theatre/New Haven, CT) and Tristan and Isolde (Canadian Opera Company/Toronto).

Lisa Kowalewski Assistant Costume Designer has worked with The Wooden Floor since 1996 and designed costumes for IBM and Disney commercials.

As a costume artist, she has created handpainted and airbrushed designs for several concerts, including Janet Jackson, Backstreet Boys, Mary J. Blige, and the opening ceremonies of the Salt Lake City Olympics.

Staff

Rebeca RamosO’Reilly Rehearsal Assistant was born in Mexico City and is a former dancer with the Compania Nacional de Danza de México from the National Institute of Fine Arts (INBA) of Mexico City from 1978 to 1988. She came to the United States in the summer of 1988 and was part of the production of Phantom of the Opera from 1989 to 1993.

Rebeca has been a member of the faculty at The Wooden Floor since 1998 as well as rehearsal assistant for Beth Burns, Melanie Ríos Glaser, Mark Haim, Nami Yamamoto, Seán Curran, and John Heginbotham.

Karinne Keithley Syers Sound Designer is an interdisciplinary performance artist who has made sound scores for many dance and theatre artists in addition to scoring her own work, including her last show which won a New York Dance and Performance Award (Bessie) for Outstanding Production. This is her third concert with The Wooden Floor.

Meg Terán Rehearsal Assistant is an alumna and faculty member of The Wooden Floor. She holds a BA in World Arts and Cultures from UCLA and an MA in Education from Chapman University.

Ben Tusher Production Director has created over 25 designs for The Wooden Floor since 2002 including work for choreographers Melanie Ríos Glaser, Donald McKayle, Mark Haim, Sally Silvers, Chris Yon, John Heginbotham, and Beth Burns. He is a resident artist and designer for UC Riverside, Backhausdance, and Chapman University, and holds an MFA in design from UC Irvine. This is Ben’s 23rd production for The Wooden Floor as Production Director.

Jennifer Vaughan Costume Designer has designed costumes for over 50 pieces for The Wooden Floor. She is continually excited to work with the creative artists at The Wooden Floor. Other credits include designs for Santa Rosa Repertory Theatre, various television shows , and many ice skating productions including HBO’s Gershwin on Ice, starring Dorothy Hamill.

Dante, Class of 2020 “I am in dance level 3A and I want to become a basketball player, dancer, or teacher. Being here at The Wooden Floor is like a dream come true. Some people think boys doing dance is weird.

I think it’s amazing! I am not afraid to show who I am. Some people know who they are when they get older and finally realize what they are doing and why it’s important. I realized the second year I got here.

I have been in the Annual Concert before, so I know how it feels like. This is my second time being in the Annual Concert and I feel very excited!”

Jennifer, Class of 2013 “Dance taught me how to be myself, to not be afraid and to try things out. You are given instruction but told to do it in your own way. When you are told to swing a hand, some might put their hand over their head, some might go under their head. You get to express your personality.

I am so grateful for how well The Wooden Floor prepared us for our future. They have offered us so many things that we don’t get in school, like SAT classes, career nights, and college tours. These things helped me to grow most, by exposing me to what life will be like when I leave here.

The Wooden Floor definitely shapes the person you are, and for the better. It requires a lot of time and energy, but it’s worth in the end.”
