DANCE IS THE ANSWER. At The Wooden Floor, we love dance. It’s powerful. It has the ability to encourage our youth to think differently about themselves, to push through obstacles, and emerge as strong and confident leaders. It’s why our students call us their second home, why on the dance floor they feel supported, able to embody who they really are. It’s why, when partnered with our academic, college and career readiness, and family services, 100 percent of our graduates do what less than half of their socioeconomic peers have done – finish high school on time and enroll in higher education for 17 consecutive years. Through dance, The Wooden Floor provides a solid platform for advancement and success.

Dance moves our youth. Forward.

"I’m in the Annual Concert and it is a dream for me." “I love to dance. I used to always dance in my room because I wasn’t brave enough to dance in front of my family. Now The Wooden Floor has helped me be comfortable dancing in front people, which feels good. The Wooden Floor helped me get those nervous thoughts out. I’m in the Annual Concert and it is a dream for me. I really care about getting good grades because I want my family to be proud of me. My tutor is really good at math. I always ask him lots of questions, and I don’t want to miss any tutoring sessions. I want to have a good future and support my family since they didn’t go to college.”

Karen, Class of 2027 Karen has demonstrated exceptional self-motivation while at The Wooden Floor, especially during the pandemic, in despite of the hardships this year has brought to her family. Karen completed tutoring with 100% attendance in the last academic year, always arriving early and eager to learn. She loves to engage in conversations and deeply cares for others. Karen dreams of becoming a school vice principal and the first in her family to achieve a college degree.

WELCOME

W

elcome to The Wooden Floor’s 38th Annual Concert: Passage/Home, A Site-Specific Exploration of Place. Our Annual Concerts have always served as a milestone marker for our students, alumni, families, staff, supporters, and Board of Directors - where our hard work from the past year, and cumulatively, can shine. As my term concludes as Chair of the Board of Directors of this great organization, I reflect on our collective resilience since I started my term in 2019. Just gathering together in-person to experience the passion, hard work, and dedication of our students is an enormous accomplishment and is a joy to witness. Between our last concert in 2019 and now, our organization successfully completed its 2010-2020 Strategic Vision and we now launch into a new vision. We have furthered plans for our students around our Creative Youth Development approach in light of the lessons learned in the pandemic. While the pandemic highlighted issues within our society, we have used those challenges to create a road map to help our students succeed well into the future.

6

T

he Wooden Floor returns to live performance in triumph! It brings me such pride to share those words as we emerge from the midst of the pandemic, showing the resiliency of our community. It is also so special that this return happens here, at our flagship location, a place designed with love (see page 16) as our student’s “second home”. The Wooden Floor has always been a beacon of hope for the most vulnerable children and families within our community. Since the start of the pandemic, we have been laser-focused on helping our students rise from this difficult time with positive attributes of social, emotional, and academic well-being in order to propel their lives forward. Our art-making is at the center of that. Self-expression, learning to trust of oneself and others, and connecting through long-term relationships builds an unmatched spirit to persevere.

As a passionate supporter of the arts, I have personally witnessed how dance education and performance are the core transformational elements through which our youth change the way they think about themselves and develop the ability to reach their full potential. We have seen the Classes of 2020 and 2021 maintain The Wooden Floor’s incredible track record of 100 percent of our graduates completing high school on time and enrolling in higher education.

Our organization encourages students to think differently about themselves and inspires our community to consider contemporary dance as a catalyst for change. Design-thinking is at the heart of innovation at The Wooden Floor. The pandemic has precipitated our entire organization to use our strengths to think differently and creatively as well, resulting in another milestone of artistic excellence. We continually ask our students to dig deep within themselves to overcome obstacles, we are able to model that ourselves. Led by Artistic Director Falon Baltzell and our artistic team, we chose an entirely new and exciting Annual Concert experience for our students and community.

It has been the greatest honor to be the Board Chair of this incredible organization. I look forward to standing with our staff, our long-term supporters as well as new supporters to fulfill our 2021-2031 Strategic Vision to move even more young people forward. It takes all of us, together, to accomplish this.

We are so grateful to our supporters who continue to walk by our side and help our students navigate this critical moment in their lives. I humbly ask for you to continue to help us shine the light of hope on our young people so they may emerge from the pandemic as confident, resilient, and joyful leaders of tomorrow.

Sincerely,

With Gratitude,

ABOUT US

About The Wooden Floor

F

ounded in 1983, The Wooden Floor is one of the foremost creative youth development nonprofit organizations in the country. We transform the lives of young people in low-income communities through the power of dance and access to higher education. In Orange County, and through national licensed partners, we use a long-term approach grounded in exploratory dance education to foster the confidence and gifts within each child to innovate, communicate, and collaborate–skills necessary for success in school and in life. 100 percent of students who graduate from The Wooden Floor immediately enroll in higher education. Our students become change agents and beacons of hope within their own families, their neighborhoods, our community, and our world.

Dance Education & Performance Opportunities Dance education and performance are the core transformational elements through which our youth change the way they think about themselves and aspire beyond the grip of socioeconomic barriers. In the dance studio, exploration, creativity, and self-knowledge lead to critical life skills, confidence, leadership, teamwork, well-being, and joy.

DANCE EDUCATION Dance classes are offered each week in modern, ballet, improvisation, contact improvisation, and choreography with professional faculty and live music accompanists.

CREATIVE DEVELOPMENT We make a commitment to a dance aesthetic that values exploration, discovery, and innovation, which leads to student success in school and in life.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT Dance Free Weeks™, a community engagement program held in schools throughout Santa Ana and neighboring under-served communities, reaches about 3,000 additional students annually.

ON STAGE Our young artists collaborate with recognized choreographers to create unexpected and challenging works of contemporary dance, performed in professional settings.

"The Wooden Floor has led to a lot of opportunity for me..." “At first I was very shy and I didn’t like dance, but my parents encouraged me to stick it out for at least one year. I’ve ended up staying here for four years now and really liking dance. Because I was doing so well, it led me to enroll in the Orange County School of the Arts, which is one of the best schools, and I am in the Ballroom Dance Conservatory. The Wooden Floor has led to a lot of opportunity for me, even though when I was younger I couldn’t see that.”

Alexander, Class of 2024 This is Alexander’s first Annual Concert at The Wooden Floor. He joined the organization in 2017, during which time his GPA has risen to a 3.8. This fall, he is entering his sophomore year at the Orange County School of the Arts and dreams of becoming a computer engineer. His dream for college is to attend UCI or Cal Poly Pomona.

OUR SECOND HOME

Our Second Home Q&A with Ernesto M. Vasquez FAIA, NCARB The Architect of The Wooden Floor’s Flagship Location What was your creative vision when you designed this building, what specific point of view were you trying to represent? Movement of roof line, energy, etc... The vision for The Wooden Floor’s home was to celebrate the families served and to encourage a hopeful vision for the future. The design team was inspired by the graceful movements reflected in dance. We wanted to capture the essence of dance in the lines and forms of this built environment. It was also important to provide a sense of dignity and importance for the students and let them see that their lives have meaning. Further, by using modern lines versus traditional historical references – the building design looks toward the future. The curvilinear roof forms reflect the movement of dance in its graceful shape. The courtyard serves as an urban sanctuary for the youth, their families and staff to congregate. What does this site-specific work with such a high level of excellence mean to you and our community? We wanted the building to express a safe and welcoming place that encourages youth to explore and have space to dream of what is possible. At the time that this building was conceptualized, most of the students were in school buildings that were not inspiring and we wanted this built environment to create a place that embraces their hopes and desires for their future while providing a sense of security. We wanted The Wooden Floor to welcome families and be a beacon of hope.

16

Passage/Home

OUR SECOND HOME

What moved you to become a supporter of The Wooden Floor, at the time known as Saint Joseph Ballet? What motivates you to continue your support these many years later? My wife Socorro was drawn to this program when she read about the founder, Beth Burns, in the local paper. She was impressed with the work Beth was trying to do with underserved children in the community. We were invited to attend a concert by Peter and Dorothea Perrin where we witnessed the transformative nature of the program. We were especially touched by the efforts to lift up and dignify these youth and their families using dance as a tool. I personally connect with the immigrant experience – I was raised in East Los Angeles by a singlemother who emigrated from Mexico in the 1940s. I identify with the students and the struggle to feel accepted and part of a community. It is so critical that these young people can have a future in this nation. Alumni of The Wooden Floor have pursued architecture as a career because they were witnesses to this beautiful building being built for them. Why was it important to you to be a part of creating this building and what do you say to the next generation about community projects such as this one? It is not often that an architect has the opportunity to design a space that celebrates the experiences of life and community. This project was very much about embracing the hopes and aspirations of the underserved – translated into a built environment. Community buildings should express the local culture and celebrate the life of its inhabitants. Socorro and Ernesto Vasquez have made an extraordinary commitment to the students and mission of The Wooden Floor through their stalwart support and leadership. Together they cochaired the Board of Directors for four years (2002-2006) and Ernesto chaired additional three years (2011-2014), and he currently serves on the Board of Directors today. They were both named to the Board Emeriti in 2010. Socorro and Ernesto are proud supporters of our Annual Concert, The Wooden Floor Legacy Society, and our Endowment Fund.

BEHIND THE SCENES

Outside the Proscenium Stage Behind the Scenes with Falon Baltzell, Artistic Director at The Wooden Floor Site-specific dance consists of many types of non-conventional performance work presented outside of a traditional theater or gallery setting. Site-specific dance for this concert, is connected to a particular place and is inspired by the site. When in conversation with Stephan Koplowitz, he shared, "Site artists find the subject matter of the work itself in the real, physical world of the actual place (the site). A site is already charged with meaning and context, and the artist’s job is to transform both the space and the audience's experience of the space. The goal is to invite the audience to view real life with fresh eyes: to see the ordinary as extraordinary." He continued that, "Audiences are presented a choreographed interaction between the site and the dance. Where the art is being experienced shapes our understanding of the content of the dance. Site-specific work occurs in active, living spaces that already have a purpose, history, and physical life, like our Main Street Location. Rather than a proscenium arch framing the dancers, the environment surrounding the dancers becomes the frame and the stage."

18

Passage/Home

BEHIND THE SCENES

The History of Site-Specific Dance Postmodern choreographers of the 1960s and 70s experimented with creating dances outside of the concert stage, from sidewalks to buildings, parking lots to bridges, choreographers and dancers reshaped our conventional notions of performance, leading to the genre of site-specific dance.

A Heartfelt Thank You Falon Baltzell would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to The Wooden Floor staff who have helped make our 38th Annual Concert a possibility for our students and community. The team embarked on a journey of supporting a site-specific concert on campus, a first in our longstanding history, with many unknowns and possibilities. I am grateful to have worked alongside a team who contributed their ongoing time and support, expertise, and many efforts to ensure the success of our show. From costume storage support, to program and logo design, leading dance classes during rehearsals, serving as Rehearsal Assistants, participation with filming, ensuring COVID-19 guidelines are followed, to moral support and much more - thank you, for all that you do, and for moving our students forward.

ABOUT THE PERFORMANCE

About the performance with Stephan Koplowitz, Choreographer and Film Director Passage/Home draws on The Wooden Floor’s inventive energy and transforms the organization’s flagship location into a multiplatform stage and exhibition space for ten separate performances which encompass dances, multi-media, and visual installations. Each vignette touches on its own subject matter, drawing from The Wooden Floor’s mission – past, present, and future. Passage/Home is about creative possibilities, exploring the unknown together, and welcoming audiences into our home away from home.

The Genesis of Passage/Home In 2014, while teaching and working on a site-specific project at the Bates Dance Festival, I met Falon Baltzell. Fast forward to 2019, and I receive an email from her asking me to consider creating a site-specific work for The Wooden Floor to premiere in the summer of 2021. After several site visits, research and meetings, my proposal was accepted and we eagerly waited for the summer of 2021! Of course, a once-in-a-century pandemic intervened. The Wooden Floor’s 2020 Annual Concert performances were canceled, the future was hard to predict. We all wondered what will become of this project in 2021? Given the site-specific nature of the work, I redesigned my artistic plan to accommodate COVID-19 safety protocols. With much organization and hard work from the entire team at The Wooden Floor, we began in-person rehearsals with students in mid-March 2021.

20

Passage/Home

ABOUT THE PERFORMANCE

This work is the culmination of four creative residencies spanning seven fulltime weeks of rehearsals. For the first two weeks, a group of 32 students (the Core Group) collaborated with me on the choreography and were joined for the last five weeks with our Ensemble to create our entire cast. This work is a site-specific work that is wholly inspired by the physical design of The Wooden Floor Main Street location and the energy of creativity that the students and staff bring to everything they do. All of the creative material you will experience was created on the sites of performance. My goal with the work is to celebrate all of these elements and to welcome back both students, staff, and the greater community to experience this unique place and institution in a manner that engages one’s imagination and speaks towards future possibilities. I would like to thank: Chief Executive Officer Dawn S. Reese for the opportunity to work with the wonderful students of The Wooden Floor and for her trust and support throughout these uncertain times. To Artistic Director Falon Baltzell for her initial invitation, attention to detail, her care and support of everyone involved in this project. To Rehearsal Director and Dance Education & Curriculum Specialist Jennifer Bassage Bonfil for her keen organizational and problem solving solutions. To Chief Operating Officer Vanessa Rodriguez for keeping us safe during our process. To the faculty who worked tirelessly as rehearsal assistants for their skill, care, and artistry. To my team of collaborators for their creative contributions and most of all, to the students of The Wooden Floor who dove into this new process and world with energy, professionalism, and fun.

ALUMNI SUCCESS

I

"

am so thankful for all the support The Wooden Floor gave me during my time as a dancer and in college. They taught me the value of giving back to a community and inspired me to do the same, which is why it’s important for me to be involved in their Alumni Professional Network and in any other way I can. I was happy to lead a college tour of Smith College for the young girls at The Wooden Floor because I know the value of both leaving California to seek higher education and that of a women’s college, especially for women in STEM. A big part of why I am choosing to teach now that I’ve graduated from Smith with my bachelor’s degree in biology before I start my master’s degree in nursing is because I want to encourage young girls to pursue careers in STEM. I would be happy for students at The Wooden Floor who choose to do the same.”

Emma, Alumna, Class of 2017 The Wooden Floor’s Alumni Professional Network began in 2018 to connect with our alumni across the nation during their college years and upon graduation. Emma graduated from Smith College in May of 2021. While attending there, she minored in Arabic to be more effective in her volunteer work focusing on refugees and young children. Emma will attend Columbia University’s Master’s Direct Entry program in nursing in June 2022 and will spend the next year working as an elementary STEM teacher at a charter school in Harlem. Her dream is to continue her education to get her doctorate in nursing to become a nurse practitioner. She actively seeks ways to give back to her community in a medical capacity because, “healthcare is often very inaccessible for many and was for me growing up.”
