Guided by member feedback and shaped by a dedicated subcommittee, the plan reflects a shared desire to bring new life to one of MAC’s most cherished spaces. The maintenance program supports a premium club experience through consistent, year-over-year upkeep, prioritizing essential work that keeps the club functional, polished, and dependable.

Strategy & 5-Year Roadmap The Board continues to refine and finalize the club strategy and a 5-year roadmap, leading MAC into the future. Our mission statement “Enrich lives, foster friendships, and build upon our traditions of excellence in athletic, social, and educational programs” drives our decisions. We strive to build a thriving, healthy community.

With this strategic foundation set, here are the key focus areas, as outlined in the 5-year roadmap and reflected in our high-level plans for the year. These highlight the club’s biggest priorities and sources of funding.

Service Excellence • Summary: A consistent, proactive level of service that makes members feel welcome and cared for by ensuring every interaction — whether on the court, in the gym, or in everyday member service — is top-notch.

• Key Projects: Launching comprehensive Service Standards training for staff, strengthening consistency across all member interactions, and supporting the daily anticipation of member needs.

Modernized Facilities • Summary: Creating high-quality spaces that inspire and excite members by refreshing our most utilized areas and reimagining underused spaces to address key gaps and opportunities.

• Key Projects: The Reading Lounge renovation and a continued focus on the “Raise the Bar” maintenance program.

The Reading Lounge project focuses on preserving what members value most while making thoughtful updates that improve comfort, functionality, and daily use.

Digital Experiences • Summary: Seamless technologies that quickly and easily connect members in MAC experiences and communities. The goal is to invest in technology that makes it easier for members to connect with MAC programs and experiences.

• Key Projects: A website refresh to improve navigation, calendars, and event discovery while helping members better find what they need, when they need it.

Strategic, Timely Decisions • Summary: The ability to efficiently and effectively execute on strategy by ensuring decisions made on the club’s behalf are timely, well-informed, and support the needs of the entire community.

• Key Projects: Club governance assessment and implementing recommended changes to simplify processes, strengthen clarity, and support more efficient, community-focused decision-making.

The Lifelong Athlete Ecosystem • Summary: Build out a club ecosystem that makes it easy to engage in the pursuit of health across Movement, Community, Nutrition, Mindset, and Recovery.

• Key Project: Focus on Movement and our “Move with MAC” campaign. This is the first step in establishing Lifelong Athlete as a core part of MAC culture.

Executive Leadership Team

We’ll engage you in this conversation all year long. Our hope is that this time next year, we’ll be wiser because we paid attention — because of what you’ve learned, what you’ve tried, and what you’ve shared with one another about what actually works. If you’ve built a strong habit, how did you get there? If something didn’t work, what got in the way?

Those insights matter. We’re learning from 135 years of lifelong athletes who have come through this club, and from those of you building habits right now. Together, those lessons help us better understand how to support one another. This is where the idea of the Lifelong Athlete sits beneath everything we do.

Lifelong Athlete is a mindset rooted in curiosity. What leads to a well-lived life?

What actions today meaningfully improve our health span later? And how willing are we to question assumptions about what works and what doesn’t? Movement is one part of that bigger picture, and it’s where we’re starting.

The clubhouse itself is a hub for this journey, not its boundary. Our vision for health extends beyond its walls. That may mean outdoor programming, organized hikes, walking groups, or new ways to move together that fit more naturally into daily life.

As we begin this year, our invitation is simple: engage more intentionally. If you already have strong habits, invite someone else along. If something isn’t working, notice it. Learn from it.

Adjust. Stay curious.

And finally, imagine the Multnomah Athletic Club 100 years from now. Imagine members having access not just to great facilities, but to the collective wisdom of those who came before them. We didn’t just use the club — we shared what worked, what didn’t, and what we learned, so those who followed could start a little wiser.

As we step into a new year, it feels important to pause and have an honest conversation.

At the Multnomah Athletic Club, we are not interested in being a January gym. You Charles Leverton GENERAL MANAGER know the model. Lots of hype, big promises, and an unspoken hope that enthusiasm fades

by February so equipment lasts longer, and capital costs stay low. That approach has never aligned with who we are.

We are built for use — and have been for 135 years. From the beginning, this club has existed to be activated. We invest in our facilities and equipment because we expect you to use them. In fact, we love when things get used enough that they need to be replaced.

That belief is at the heart of why we’re launching Move with MAC, our club-wide focus on movement for the year ahead.

This is not about prescribing a single definition of fitness. Instead, it’s an invitation to ask better questions. What truly moves us more?

What gets in the way? What sticks over time?

Movement looks different for everyone, and it changes across seasons of life. Some seasons are about competition and seeing how far you can push. Others are about staying in the game. Walking. Rebuilding. Prioritizing family, community, or mental health while still taking care of yourself.

Through Move with MAC, we’ll explore all of it. We’ll highlight low-barrier ways to get started, clearer pathways into programs, and opportunities to try something new — especially for adults and seniors who may be returning to movement, navigating time constraints, or simply looking for what’s next. Our goal is to make engagement feel more welcoming, more intuitive, and more sustainable.

FACES OF MAC In 2024, 4 members ranging in age from their 50s to 70s made MAC proud with weightlifting performances at the state level.

Devon Carew, Robert Howard, Charles Matschek, and Stephanie Schoch all encountered Perparim “Papi” Ferunaj through either his Olympic weightlifting or Senior Strength classes, and with the coach’s encouragement, put themselves out there in a competitive context. The way in which they did so showed everyone watching that regardless of age, committing to strength and fitness is always a winning proposition.

The Winged M: What’s the highest honor you’ve achieved since taking up Olympic weightlifting? Are there any other personal bests or related accomplishments you’d like to mention?

Robert Howard: Coach Papi knew the secret to motivate me. He asked me, ‘How

would you like to set a state record? Always up for a challenge, I said yes. I set the Oregon State Record in my age group and weight class in February 2024. I earned a silver medal in the WSO PNW Regional Championship in October 2024, and I earned a gold medal this year.

I may be the last man standing, but I am proud to be competing at my age. I’ve lost weight, I’ve added muscle, and we’ve built a community that loves to lift.

Charles Matschek: The highest honor I’ve achieved to date is holding the record for my age/weight group at the 2024 Pacific Northwest Championships. I’ve continued to increase my personal best in both the weight room and during competitions.

Stephanie Schoch: I set a record for my age group in the USA Weightlifting competition in the fall of 2024. I also won the One-Rep MACs bench press competition in 2023 for my age group by pressing 120 pounds.

Devon Carew: I’ve enjoyed the process of preparing for competitions, setting some PRs while doing so. I placed well in my age group — in a local competition and in the 2024 PNW Championships.

WM: How long have you been lifting weights, and when did you transition to practicing the sport of Olympic weightlifting? What was the biggest adjustment that came along with that transition?

CM: I began lifting weights in high school at the MAC, and continued at the University of Oregon, and in Southern California, Singapore, and New Zealand.

I began attending training sessions at the MAC in the spring of 2023, and the adjustment was not difficult. Training was 3 times a week, where I had been used to weight-training nearly every day. The biggest adjustment was the intense, focused, and strict approach to the lifts. By remaining strict, there is much less risk of injury due to incorrect lifting, or overtraining and fatigue.

CLUB LIFE

SS: I started lifting weights 40 years ago — first bodybuilding, then strength training to supplement martial arts, then CrossFit, and Olympic weightlifting in 2024. The biggest change in perspective with Oly lifting was gaining the patience, focus, and consistency to learn and perfect two specific movements.

They look deceptively simple to the untrained eye — someone appears to be just picking up a barbell and lifting it overhead. But the snatch and clean and jerk each have 3 separate pulls involving a lot of technical complexity and executed in a single, smooth sequence. It takes months/years of practicing each movement over and over and over again to develop the power and precision to efficiently lift a large amount of weight overhead.

DC: I’ve been lifting weights for perhaps 6 years as part of taking up CrossFit to strengthen my core in order to help with back issues. I started Olympic weightlifting more seriously about 2 years ago, when I realized we had an expert coach at the club. The biggest transition for me from general lifting to Olympic lifting is just getting used to the lift; it’s very technical and can take months and years to learn.

RH: I never regularly lifted weights until I began Olympic weightlifting, in the fall of 2024. At the age of 72, I discovered the extent to which gravity was in control of my posture. Olympic weightlifting emphasizes body alignment and technique, and in the process, I learned what I needed to improve my flexibility.

WM: How has taking up weightlifting changed your everyday life? What are you able to do that you weren’t before or continue doing that you worried you someday might not be able to?

SS: For me, weightlifting improves mental health; increases strength, which allows me to be independent (I can carry my own groceries, move furniture, etc.); and gives me confidence and sometimes even a little swagger.

DC: It’s improved my mobility, especially around the shoulder joint and thoracic posture. And the additional strength — especially core strength — has helped to keep my back issues at bay.

RH: I used to focus my workouts solely on aerobic exercise. I played tennis regularly and

I took yoga classes. I realized after I started training that I needed to develop more core and upper body strength. I worked with my coaches and added strength and conditioning to my weekly routine. I am spending equal time between strength training and aerobic conditioning. I also added stretching every morning to my daily routine.

“For me, weightlifting improves mental health; increases strength, which allows me to be independent (I can carry my own groceries, move furniture, etc.); and gives me confidence and sometimes even a little swagger.­” ­— Stephanie Schoch CM: Taking up weightlifting has brought more structure to my exercise routine, I have met a new enthusiastic group of men and women, and the personal awareness of my fitness is more acute. Weightlifting has made me stronger, enabling me to remain active with other sports, such as snow and water skiing. Everyone wants to keep doing what they love as long as possible; weightlifting’s discipline and resulting increased strength will help prolong all our activities.

WM: How did MAC staff or members help to motivate you? What’s the most valuable thing you’ve learned about the sport or your overall approach to fitness? What motivated you to work with Ferunaj?

DC: It’s been useful to take cues from him as I lift. It does help to get pointers on small things in the lift, and to better understand the lift generally. And to also learn a bit about his approach to training — how to train, good repetition schemes for Olympic weightlifting, the overall volume for individual sessions, etc.

RH: Coach Papi motivated me with the carrot of competing. To be competitive, I had to make weight to compete in the weight class where I can be most competitive. I have become more aware of what I eat, how much I eat, and healthy choices.

CM: After observing me in the gym, Papi suggested I try weightlifting, and that’s how I got started. I have participated in sport most of life and have used resistance training as part of my routines. What motivates me now is to keep increasing my personal best lifts, to take my competition to the national level by qualifying for the Masters National Championships.

SS: I practiced the snatch and clean and jerk in CrossFit workouts, but always felt that I was lacking technique, which meant a plateau in the amount of weight I could lift and an increased chance of injury given the competitive spirit of CrossFit. Papi has been teaching these movements his entire life and knows how to coach people at all stages of life and fitness levels and coming from different sports. He is a patient, knowledgeable coach and knows how to encourage his students to keep them lifting and getting better. He has helped me to greatly improve my technique.

WM: How has your success affected your confidence and quality of life? What are your hopes for the future?

RH: For the first 6 months after I started, I found muscles that I had not used in a lifetime. I ached. I stretched, and I ached. I didn’t give up, and I am happy that my body is adjusting. I stand up straight, my clothes fit better, and that makes me feel good CM: Success in every sport raises confidence and self-esteem; weightlifting is no different, and it’s done that for me. Regular exercise with a goal in mind — with its associated benefits — equates to a higher and richer quality of life. For the future, I intend to keep training, enjoying the friendship of the other lifters, building the sport at the MAC, and competing for the MAC. SS: I’ve been out of Olympic lifting for a year because of hip pain and a recent rotator cuff surgery. I hope to be back to upper body workouts in a few weeks and gaining muscle back, overhead lifting in 6 months, and Olympic lifting at some point thereafter.

DC: Just being stronger has helped generally, both with confidence and to avoid back pain and issues.

FACILITY UPDATES Updates to Parking Violations To further enhance safety for all members, guests, and staff, the MAC will introduce a new subcategory within Parking Violations titled “Moving Violations.” This addition emphasizes the MAC’s commitment to responsible driving and helps ensure that both pedestrians and vehicles can navigate the parking garage with the highest level of safety and care. This update will go into effect beginning March 1, 2026.

Moving violations include but are not limited to failure to stop at the stop sign, speeding above the 5-mph limit, wrong-way driving, and unsafe or reckless driving that endangers pedestrians, cyclists, staff, or other vehicles.

Parking violations include but are not limited to blocking exits, other vehicles, walkways, leaving club premises, unauthorized overnight parking, parking in a designated “no space” spot, taking two parking spaces.

MAC Gives Back This November, MAC partnered with the city of Portland to provide hygiene supplies, clothing, and everyday essentials for those in need.

With the help of members, MAC was able to provide 4 large van loads of donations to local shelters.

Monthly Report The House Committee enforces the rules of conduct for members and guests by investigating infractions and recommending sanctions to the Board of Trustees. Recent board actions are listed below, along with reminders about the applicable club rules.

The House Committee has seen an increase in credential sharing amongst junior members and is responding accordingly — Violations in this category may result in a 6-months suspension for junior members. Program Offerings Strawberry Class (Age 2 by Sept. 1) Strawberry introduces children to group learning with arts and crafts, story time, circle time, sensory activities, and 40 minutes of active play. Students develop independence, patience, social skills, and classroom responsibility. Optional early drop-off and lunch are available.

Blueberry Class (Age 3 by Sept. 1) Blueberry focuses on foundational skills including letters, numbers, shapes, colors, and manners. Daily activities include circle time, lessons, small group work, crafts, active play, and classroom jobs. Optional early drop-off, lunch, and after-school programming extend the day.

Huckleberry Class (Age 4 by Sept. 1) Huckleberry prepares children for kindergarten with a curriculum aligned to Oregon’s Common Core standards. Students enjoy circle time, lessons, hands-on centers, active play, group learning, snack, and occasional field trips. Optional early drop-off, lunch, and after-school programs are available.

New Year, New Committee Voices:

Finding Your Place Each quarter, The Winged M highlights the vital role of MAC members and the committees that shape the life of the club. As 2026 begins, Balladeers and Fitness Committee member Bob Howard reflects on the joys, skills, and advice he has gathered as part of the MAC committee system.

The Winged M: As we begin a new year, reflecting on growth and service, can you share which committees you’ve contributed to, and what drew you to those roles?

Bob Howard: As I look ahead to the coming year — my final term serving on both the Balladeers and Fitness Committees — I feel a mix of excitement and gratitude. These roles have become a meaningful part of my life, and I can’t help but reflect on how music and athletics have shaped my journey, both individually and within our MAC community.

My musical journey at MAC truly began when I joined the Balladeers in 2022, soon after retiring as executive director of Artichoke Music. Although I’d spent years playing guitar and performing in bands, stepping into a choir felt like a brand new adventure. I still remember my first rehearsal: I walked in wondering where I would fit in. I played music by ear, and I didn’t sing harmony. That was all fine with our wonderful choral director, Scott Toumi. I found my place among seasoned singers and blended in with the tenors. With a good ear, gentle encouragement, and practice, I was singing harmony.

Making music together, discovering harmonies, and connecting with fellow singers has enriched my life. Through shared rehearsals and performances, I’ve formed genuine friendships. That same sense of connection drew me into the world of Olympic weightlifting three years ago.

Joining both committees and stepping into new activities have been catalysts for personal growth. I discovered that trying something outside my comfort zone helped me break through old limits and inspired me to be more open, collaborative, and adaptable.

WM: How has your background shaped your perspective on starting fresh, building healthy community connections, and fostering impactful partnerships?

BH: As an organizer in the energy industry, I thrived on building teams and leading projects — managing regulatory processes, getting facilities up and running, and rallying

Joining the Balladeers, I quickly found myself stepping into an organizing role once again: I was asked to be the librarian. At first, it meant countless hours at the copy machine in the bustling Events Office, but those late nights brought unexpected rewards — laughter with the Events team, stories exchanged over

stacks of sheet music, and a deeper connection with club staff.

I realized that the old-school way of managing music wasn’t sustainable, and I felt a responsibility to modernize our process.

Spearheading the project to digitize the Balladeers’ music library was both daunting and exhilarating. I remember the nerves

CLUB LIFE before unveiling the new system — and the pride I felt when members accessed scores securely from our website for the first time.

My experience on MAC committees has taught me the importance of taking initiative and embracing leadership wholeheartedly.

The time goes quickly — a chair’s term lasts just one year, and 3-year committee appointments pass in a blink. I learned that to make an impact, you need to seize the moment.

Share your ideas, find common ground, and build a team.

WM: What lessons, skills, or best practices have you gained through your committee work that might inspire others seeking to make purposeful, collaborative choices in the new year?

BH: Serving on a committee at MAC has shown me how involvement leads to deeper, more meaningful connections with fellow members. One best practice I’ve learned is that being proactive in connecting with others not only enriches your own experience but also strengthens the community. By putting yourself out there — whether by volunteering for a task, joining a planning session, or simply starting a conversation after a workout — you create opportunities to learn from others and build lasting relationships.

A key lesson is the importance of collaboration. Working side by side with people from different backgrounds and interests opens your eyes to new perspectives and helps you discover common goals. For example, when I helped organize last year’s One-Rep MACs Lifting Competition, I saw firsthand how a shared project could bring together lifters of all ages and abilities. There was a moment when a longtime member hit a personal best and the whole room erupted in applause — it wasn’t just about the accomplishment, but about everyone rallying behind each other and celebrating as a team. That sense of camaraderie is what makes committee service so rewarding.

If you’re considering joining a committee, know that your interest and energy will always be welcome. Getting involved is a personal decision, but based on my experience, it’s one of the best ways to maximize your membership at MAC — whether by helping organize an event, sharing your expertise, or simply lending a hand.

WM: For members looking to get more involved in 2026, what advice would you offer to help them take the first step toward volunteerism within the club?

BH: My advice: • One of the best ways to learn about volunteer opportunities is by reaching out to people already involved. Hearing firsthand about their experiences can give you valuable insights and help you envision where you might fit in.

• Network and ask questions to gather different perspectives.

• Don’t hesitate to attend committee meetings as a guest. By asking thoughtful questions, you’ll discover the variety of ways to contribute and learn what others enjoy about their roles.

• Follow your passion when selecting opportunities.

As you consider taking that first step, please know that I’m always happy to chat with anyone curious about getting more involved.

If you’re unsure where to start, I’d love to help you explore what might ignite your interest.

Don’t hesitate to reach out — sometimes a simple conversation is all it takes to discover your next passion.

WM: Can you describe a project or initiative you were part of that helped the club engage more deeply with the broader community? How did that effort create lasting value?

BH: At the start of my term as chair of the Balladeers Committee, I had the privilege of co-producing a vibrant Broadway revue for the 2025 All-Committee Dinner. First-year trustee Julie Kim brought us the title song from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Oklahoma!

— which she and her committee had playfully tailored to celebrate life at MAC. From there, we produced a revue that brought a combined cast from the Balladeers and the MelloMacs to the stage with lively numbers, colorful costumes, and an infectious spirit of camaraderie. The revue was more than a show — it was a joyful celebration of our community spirit.

As I approach the end of my term, I’m thrilled to be producing “A Romantic Evening at the Rainbow Room” — an event designed to capture the magic of music and dance and to mark the Balladeers’ 85th birthday. Set for

Valentine’s Day, this special evening promises an elegant atmosphere, candlelit tables, and a program filled with timeless love songs and enchanting performances.

IN MEMORIAM Steve Brown July 29, 1952 – Oct. 25, 2025 MAC Award Winner: Bud Lewis Award, President’s Award, Joe Loprinzi Inspirational Award Steve Brown, a remarkable and resilient Portland native, passed away peacefully at his home on Oct. 25, 2025, surrounded by family and friends.

He was 73 years old. A true renaissance man, Steve will be remembered as a scholar-athlete, entrepreneur, coach, musician, writer, and one-armed surfing legend.

Born on July 29, 1952, to Floyd and Mary Janette Brown, Steve grew up in Portland’s Crestwood neighborhood, where his curiosity, humor, and athletic spirit began to shine.

A proud graduate of Jackson High School, he excelled in baseball, football, and track, setting records that reflected his determination and drive. He continued his athletic and academic journey at Lewis & Clark College, earning a psychology degree in 1974, followed by an MBA from the University of Oregon in 1977.

While in graduate school, Steve met the love of his life, Carie Strahorn. They became best friends long before realizing their deep and lifelong connection. Married in 1978, they built a partnership defined by love, laughter, and mutual respect. Together they raised two children, Catie and Calvin, and created a life rooted in family, friendship, and adventure.

Steve began his career in human resources before founding the Steve Brown Company in 1981, supplying composites, custom equipment, and technology to companies such as Boeing, Callaway, and Lamborghini. His entrepreneurial drive reflected his lifelong curiosity and commitment to excellence.

An accomplished athlete, Steve completed the Eugene Marathon in under 3 hours and competed in the USA Cycling Masters Track National Championships. His motto — “Ride it like you stole it” — captured his fearless approach to both sport and life. Beyond athletics, he was a gifted chef and musician,

and a member of The Sludge Bros., known for their Blues Brothers-style performances at Portland’s Leaky Roof Tavern, owned by longtime friend Chuck Savage.

Diagnosed with spindle cell sarcoma in 2009, Steve faced cancer with courage and humor.

After losing his left arm in 2016, he became a celebrated one-armed surfer and author, writing essays for Surfer Today.

At MAC, Steve served as a committee member, mentor, and leader, earning the Bud Lewis, President’s, and Joe Loprinzi Inspirational Awards for sportsmanship and resilience. In later years, he and Carie found joy competing in pickleball, forming lifelong friendships through the sport.

Steve will be remembered for his strength, humor, compassion, and his signature advice: “Make good decisions.” His life remains an enduring reminder to stay curious, live fully, and find joy in every adventure.

Monte Johnson July 31, 1935 – Oct. 26, 2025 Monte Johnson passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, Oct. 26, 2025.

Born on July 31, 1935, Monte grew up in Heppner, Oregon, in a home without electricity or plumbing — humble beginnings that shaped his deep appreciation for hard work, perseverance, and opportunity. He put himself through law school at the University of Oregon before beginning what became a distinguished career in the institutional investment industry.

Monte dedicated his professional life to serving the working men and women of the building trades and unions of all kinds. He was known for his integrity, vision, and steadfast commitment to his clients and colleagues.

In February 1985, at age 49, Monte founded Quest Investment Management with a small group of union clients. Together

with Greg Sherwood; his sons, Cameron and Kevin Johnson; and Doug Goebel, he built Quest into a leading Pacific Northwest investment firm serving unions, nonprofits, foundations, and individuals with thoughtful, disciplined investment stewardship.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Monte was a gifted storyteller and a crowd favorite at both professional and personal gatherings. His quick wit, warmth, and love of people drew others in and made every room brighter. He served on numerous local nonprofit boards and was a proud supporter and enthusiastic fan of his alma mater, University of Oregon.

Monte will be remembered for his sharp mind, generous spirit, and unwavering belief in the dignity of work and the value of community.

Andrew John Franklin April 16, 1939 – Nov. 2, 2025 Born in London, England, Andrew was the son of Barbara (née Hill) and Ralph Franklin, an officer in the Royal Engineers.

Andrew was 6 months old when his father departed for the war in 1939, leaving Barbara, Andrew, and his 2 older sisters to be evacuated to Hereford.

The family did not see Ralph again until the end of the war 6 years later.

Andrew attended Emanuel School in Wandsworth and later earned a master’s degree in mining engineering from the Royal School of Mines in London. He joined the University of London Air Squadron, flying Tiger Moths and De Havilland Chipmunks, and was a proud member of the Chaps Club.

His early career involved work in a diamond mine in Sierra Leone, a silver mine in Mexico, a copper mine in Portugal, and a concrete project in Kuwait.

In 1968, Andrew emigrated to Wyoming with his wife, Elaine, to take a position as mining engineer of a uranium mine. In 1976,

IN MEMORIAM Continued from page 20 the family — now including sons Simon and Jonathan — moved to Portland, where Andrew became an executive with PP&L. After his first marriage ended, Andrew met and married Susan in 1990. With her daughters, Ingrid and Heidi, they became a blended family — affectionately referred to as the “Brady Bunch” by their friends — along with pets Tippy the cat and Sherlock the dog.

Andrew had a rich and fulfilling life in Portland, with successful careers in mining, engineering, wood products, and finally as part of the executive team at Moda for the last 11 years of his career. He served on numerous boards, including Oregon Public Broadcasting and DoveLewis Veterinary Hospital. A MAC member for more than 50 years, he played squash and tennis and was a dedicated member of the Hiking Group. In retirement, he and Susan traveled extensively, including hiking trips along the Cotswold Way in England and through the Dordogne in France. For 10 years, they spent 2 blissful weeks every summer on a remote island in Greece with Andrew’s closest university friends.

Considered a true gentleman by those who knew him, Andrew had a wide circle of friends from all walks of life. He particularly cherished his poker group, whose members have laughed and played together for more than 30 years.

He was thoughtful, kind, a good listener, and always willing to share insights gained from a lifetime of learning and experiences. His absence will be deeply felt.

A devoted family man, Andrew loved spending time with his sons and daughters, their spouses, and his 6 grandchildren. The family enjoyed many adventures together, right up until the last year of his life. In the week before he died, he was enthusiastically planning a steam-train trip through Canada with his son Jonathan.

Andrew is survived by his wife, Susan; his sons, Simon and Jonathan; his daughters, Ingrid and Heidi; Simon’s wife, Victoria; Heidi’s husband, Marston; and his 6 grandchildren.

Walter Henry Palmberg Jr. Dec. 15, 1942 – Oct. 29, 2025 Walter Henry Palmberg Jr. joined his beloved wife in eternal rest on Oct. 29, 2025.

Born on Dec. 15, 1942, in Astoria, Oregon, he lived a life defined by dedication and unwavering support for his family.

Affectionately known as “Wally,” he was truly one of a kind. His life was characterized by a passion for sports, a commitment to education, and a tireless devotion to raising and supporting his family. His steadfast nature never wavered, and he served as a pillar of strength to those he loved.

Wally passed away surrounded by the family he adored. His legacy lives on through his 3 children, 5 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren, with a 4th great-grandchild expected soon.

“We all love you, Dad/Grandpa/Great Grandpa, and we always will. Say hi to Mom for us.”

There will never be another Wally. His memory will be treasured by all who knew him.

can be a lot in the best possible way. Like the endless scroll of Netflix’s home screen, the sheer volume of compelling classes, workouts, wellness services, and facilities can leave a new member with analysis paralysis.

The good news is, there’s no wrong path to follow at MAC. The trick is to just start walking — or running as the case may be.

That’s because there are other members cheering along, supporting the Lifelong Athlete journey.

“My hope would be that it’s very apparent, very quickly to any new member that at whatever level they are at or whatever interest they have, there are avenues and opportunities for them to engage in movement.

Everyone here is incredibly approachable, so don’t be shy,” says Eric Skaar, Chair of MAC’s Fitness Committee.

“Whether it’s coming to a Fitness Open House if you’ve got questions about that side of the building, or if there’s a sport or group that you’re interested in, talk to the Club Concierge, who can point you in the right direction. Whoever it is, that person’s going to be friendly and help you out.”

As evidence of this, several members stepped forward to share how they use MAC’s facilities and demonstrate that, at every age, MAC Fitness is racing with opportunities to stay in motion.

The Honeymooner Kaeli Nolte just joined MAC in March 2025 after marrying her longtime partner, Maxwell Wolfard, in October of the previous year. Wolfard has been a member since high school, so their relationship offered Nolte the chance to visit MAC as a social guest regularly before she joined. Once in a while, she even got to sample the club’s Fitness facilities as an athletic guest, and that was where her romance with MAC’s endless possibilities really flowered.

“Please bring me back,” Nolte recalls repeatedly requesting. “In getting married, we were finally able to apply for a family membership. Obviously, I was like, ‘Yeah, we’re going to be members here for our life.’

“I never really would have considered myself a gym person before joining the MAC. I am a soccer girl, playing since I was eight,” she adds before jumping into the list of new things she learned to love in her leadup to

joining — and after. “Typically, I would use the Strength Room with my husband, who took a lot of physical education classes in college and does research for fun on how to activate certain muscles. There are so many different kinds of machines, resources, and uses, so just being able to use all the equipment changed my perspective, and of course the sauna, jacuzzi, and now cold plunge.”

After Nolte suffered a knee injury playing soccer in January, it took until July for her to move without pain, which made her all the more eager to take advantage of every MAC resource as she was able, step by step. Between exposure to MAC’s Squash Community, meeting with Christy Johnson for a Wellness Consultation, and discovering the MAC Fit classes, her fitness future exploded.

“I did the consultation with Christy, and said, ‘Here are my goals for getting in shape in general.’ You want to get as strong as you can, as quick as you can, and we’re family planning, too, so that plays into it. We talked about all these things and she was like, “Okay. Here’s some classes you should try.”

Continued from page 31 Nolte says MAC Fit was perfect because in the small-group setting she was able to explain her injury and the trainers were able to cater to her needs, adjust weights and movements, and help her build strength in targeted ways. She started taking classes 5 days a week at lunchtime, and the improvements were both specific and general in all the right ways.

“I started feeling stronger and much more stable. That led to being able to do more in the actual Fitness Room because MAC Fit teaches you different moves and equipment.

You can build on, and riff off, that and start to do things your own way. I pushed getting stronger as opposed to just working on basic stabilization. Through that, I PT’d myself through the MAC, which was fantastic.”

Now that Nolte is healed and has her eyes fully forward, she sees new possibilities around every bend in the club’s hallways. She looks forward to returning to squash, perhaps trying out karate, and someday maybe even competing in weightlifting.

“There are so many different things to try, each one has a community, and everyone is nice. As you get more athletic, you get more interested in it, and you just feel better. So, you want to try more, and it’s so fun in that way.”

The Good Addiction Brian and Maureen Fennerty have now been married for nearly half a century, and it’s clear that their connection to each other and their shared passion for exercise have only deepened through the years.

“Neither of us feels very old. We’ve worked out just about every day since high school.

It’s changed over time depending on what we were able to do — I can’t run anymore, but I can do a lot of things,” Brian says. “Joining MAC didn’t introduce us to fitness, but it introduced us to different ways of a lifelong fitness movement.”

For Maureen, it was college that acted as the catalyst. “When I was in high school in upstate New York, I couldn’t do a cartwheel.

If you couldn’t be a cheerleader, there were no sports for women,” she recounts. “I always wanted to be a teacher. I get to college, and I luckily went to school for health, PE, and recreation. Every semester, I took I ballroom dancing, racquetball, squash, tennis …”

“Ice skating!” Brian cuts in.

“Ice skating one, ice skating two. I became a water safety instructor, scuba diving. I did it all, and then I became a health education teacher,” Maureen concludes.

A subversion of the stereotype of the sheltered child who goes away to school only to be seduced by all the vices their parents sheltered them from, Maureen got addicted to the good stuff, literally. She was hooked on fitness.

Together, the Fennertys found no shortage of ways to stay active, even when it meant running separately in the early morning, so someone was always home with the kids.

We joined it for the family benefits, especially our kids,” Brian explains. Their children — Kelly, who was also a MAC Scholar Athlete; Sean; Colleen; and Conor — had all played sports at Jesuit High School and into college. They found ways to work out together when schedules permitted, and all 4 young adults explored a variety of sports, from basketball to racquetball, on their own.

“Sometimes, I would hit the club after dinner or on the way home and just do the StairMaster or something. But then, I realized what was available was this huge monster workout room with every kind of weight conceivable,” Brian says, reflecting on his aha moment. “Now, if I didn’t have a MAC, are you kidding me? I’d be lost in space.”

Brian says he’s been accused of campaigning for mayor of the Fitness Room because he stops and talks to everyone on his way through, making workouts sometimes take up to 3 hours. Meanwhile, Maureen has quietly been covering the rest of the building by taking as many Group Exercise classes as she can. Right now, she’s super into the HIIT classes and MAC Strong.

“I do the best I can do because I know how important it is. Right now, I have a little IT band injury, so I can’t do the jumping jacks, but normally, I will do anything to try to keep up with everybody in there,” Maureen says, adding that she’s also partial to resistance training. “Excellent. Josh [Sargeant] is amazing.”

Both Fennertys feel energized not just by the variety of workouts available to them, but also by the wide-ranging ages of those they share them with. Brian says many of the constituents he regularly canvasses are

younger than 45. For her part, Maureen’s regular workout buddy with whom she shares the back corner of Studio One is in their mid30s. This very well might help them stay as socially flexible as they are physically.

“They find out that we’re in our 70s, and they look at you shocked, and that’s good!”

Brian says, smiling. “It always makes me think if I’m doing the right thing because I’m not growing as old as my chronologic age.

Physiologically, I’m staying younger, which is what I want to do, and I want to keep doing it to the day I fall over dead.”

The goal, however, is to keep defying time itself. “Our generation, largely, they start growing old when they stop moving,” Brian says. “Movement is the way of life of us, and we’re determined not to let that happen to us.

“I think a lot of people don’t realize that once they get fit — in an exercise class like Mo’s or a weight class or cycling or running, whatever it is — the activity becomes fun.

It’s not work anymore. It’s not painful. It’s not drudgery. It’s something that you look forward to. It becomes a pleasure and an important part of their life.”

This Machine Makes Athletes First Junior Combine Succeeds in Challenging Children & Providing Inspiration

“I

t’s not just being able to do it. It’s believing you’re able to do it.”

That quote comes from Herbie Skaar, the precocious 9-yearold son of Fitness Committee Chair Eric Skaar. Herbie couldn’t join the interview with his dad and brother, Simon, due to a scheduling conflict, but his enthusiasm and foresight compelled him to prepare a statement.

Kids never cease to amaze, and seeking to return the favor, MAC created the Junior Combine, an event designed to help kids see exactly how amazing they are.

As Senior Director of Fitness & Wellness CJ Martin put it in his post-event email, the event “was designed not as a competition, but as an opportunity for athletes to explore their potential, learn about their physical strengths, and identify areas for continued development. What stood out most was the enthusiasm, effort, and sportsmanship that every participant displayed.”

Nearly 100 club youths turned out for the Junior Combine on Saturday, Nov. 1, to be tested in Vertical Jump, Broad Jump, Pro-Agility Drill, Agility T-Test, Medicine Ball Chest Pass, 40-Yard Dash, Strict Pull-Ups, Mid-Thigh Isometric Pull, and the alluringly titled “Desire.”

That last one measured kids’ inner drive via nonstop burpee box jumps, and Simon reports being pleased with how he performed.

“I did it 60 times,” he proclaims, not in comparison with the highest achiever, who racked up 68, but marveling at his ability to achieve in an event he hadn’t practiced for prior to that day. “That made me feel pretty good.”

“There weren’t many 11-year-olds doing it 60 times,” his dad chimes in. “It’s about reinforcing that mental toughness aspect of sports and not letting your brain tell you that you can’t do something.”

When Skaar became chair of the Fitness Committee, one of the things the group looked to do was expand the number of events to engage membership in different fitness activities. Adults can engage in friendly competition and take stock of their own strengths in the Decathlon and One-Rep MACs lifting competition, but there wasn’t really an event for club juniors.

“We came up with this idea of taking from the assorted professional sport drafts and thinking about science-based activities or tests that kids could do, that would give them an athletic assessment and help Continued on page 40

By the time members read this story, families will have received a detailed email analysis of their children’s performance, highlighting individual strengths, identifying areas for improvement, and providing recommendations for sports and programs that align with each athlete’s unique physical profile.

“Maybe they went in a little apprehensive. They should have come out believing in themselves and feeling their confidence ratcheting up piece by piece,” Eric concludes. “That was the feedback I’ve heard from parents, kids, you name it. Even the volunteers were like, ‘I felt great for two weeks after that.’ It was really about inspiring our youngest members to believe in themselves.”

guide them towards potentially having the confidence to try something new,” Skaar explains.

Around the age of 12 or 13, he says, a lot of kids stop playing organized sports, which detaches them from mentorship and coaching. It takes them out of a team environment and that camaraderie, and it potentially parks them in front of a computer playing Fortnite for way too many hours a day.

“What we’re looking to do is give kids who might at that age say, ‘I don’t actually like that thing my parents signed me up for when I was 6 years old anymore. But I’m only a soccer player. I can’t do something else.’ Instead of thinking of themselves as a basketball or baseball player, we hope they come out thinking, ‘I’m an athlete who plays sports.’”

“I didn’t really know what it was about, so I just wanted to see if it was fun, and it was,” Simon interjects, grounding the high hopes of adults in the enjoyment of junior athletes, another important component of sport.

“I did not know I had a very good balance, which I learned doing the spin on the balance beam. It made me think about some stuff because in soccer, I’m the goalkeeper. And I feel like if I didn’t have very good balance, sometimes I might fall over trying to make a save.”

Since third grade, Simon’s played a range of sports, also including baseball, basketball, and cross country. After taking part in the assessment, it doesn’t sound like he’s planning to narrow that scope anytime soon, which is music to the elder Skaar’s ears.

“I find it to be very important that kids are doing different sports and not specializing at crazy young ages,” he says. “It’s just great to engage different muscle groups. Somebody can teach you the skills, but your vertical jump or your T-drill time suggests certain activities might be really fun for you right away. That’s a great thing for kids to know, and if they are getting tired or bored, or the competitiveness of whatever sport has gotten absurd too soon, they can find an on-ramp to something different.”

Herbie is already excelling at gymnastics, and enjoying playing squash, and at age 5, Edie — Eric and his wife, Sophia’s, daughter — is still very

MAC Synchro Masters Bring Home Wins It was “Kansas City, here we come!” as the team and coaches headed east in October.

With costumes, deck wear, and nose clips packed carefully into carry-on bags, the athletes’ energy was palpable. Eleven months of workouts, routine creation, and dedicated practice were about to be put to the test — and the MAC Synchro Masters took it all by storm.

The dedication of the women to their sport was clear throughout the year, but it was at the national competition where so many hours of practice truly paid off. For four days, they were committed to the rigors of competition, knowing this was the ultimate validation of their hard work.

Overall, the MAC Synchro Masters brought home 16 medal finishes and 9 additional top-10 placements at the competition.

The coaching staff shifted this season when Bethany Bragg moved back to Florida, but the team was grateful to have her for most of the year. Former team swimmer Erin King, now an international judge and part-time coach, stepped in when Head Coach Lucie Svrcinova took leave to be with her mother in the Czech Republic. Assistant Coach M’Liss Stephenson rose to the challenge, contributing long hours and steady support to ensure the team was prepared. Their combined expertise, encouragement, and dedication played a major role in these terrific results.

Training in Full Swing: MAC Coaches Enhance Their Approach While MAC Tennis classes paused for the Thanksgiving break, the MAC Tennis coaching staff was hard at work behind the scenes, sharpening their skills and expanding their knowledge to bring even more energy and expertise to the courts.

The club hosted Michele Krause, USTA national coach for Cardio Tennis, for an intensive 5-hour training session. This 1-day workshop provided the coaching staff with an opportunity to explore innovative drills, new techniques, and best practices — while also strengthening team connections and sharing ideas to enhance the member experience.

Members are encouraged to ask their MAC Tennis coaches about what they learned as the team continues to honor their commitment to staying at the top of their game.

MAC Strikes Gold at the 2025 USA Pickleball National Championships

Timothy Leatherman and Carie Strahorn won the Mixed Doubles (75 – 79) division at the 2025 USA National Pickleball competition.

MAC is celebrating another remarkable achievement on the national stage, this time from 2 standout pickleball athletes. Timothy Leatherman and Carie Strahorn captured gold in the Mixed Doubles (75 – 79) division at the 2025 USA Pickleball National Championships, showcasing exceptional skill along with the spirit, passion, and perseverance that define MAC athletes.

Competing against top teams from across the country, the duo demonstrated consistent excellence throughout the tournament, blending sharp strategy, steady hands, and decades of court experience. Their chemistry was evident in every rally — whether resetting a blistering drive, executing a perfectly placed third-shot drop, or finishing exchanges with decisive net play.

The gold-medal match was a model of composure under pressure. Leatherman and

Strahorn executed a patient, tactical game plan, extending rallies, minimizing errors, and seizing momentum at pivotal moments. Their final point — punctuated by a perfectly placed winning shot — drew cheers from supporters who watched them compete.

Beyond their accomplishments on the court, both players are beloved members of the MAC pickleball community. Their leadership, positivity, and genuine love for the sport have had a lasting impact on open play and special events. Their national-title victory not only reflects personal excellence but also inspires players of all ages and levels at MAC. Josh Jan Competes in Pan American Cup In November, MAC Climbing Team athlete Josh Jan traveled to Armenia, Columbia, to compete in IFSC Climbing Pan American Cup Armenia 2025. International Federation of Sport Climbing World Cup events are the highest level of competition in the sport of climbing. This was the second IFSC event that Josh, a high school senior, has competed in. He qualified for finals in 13th place, then finished the event in 8th place overall.

Remembering Athletic Trailblazer Reuben Sanders

I

t’s likely that Reuben C. Sanders (1876 – 1957), considered one of Oregon’s greatest all-time football players and multi-sport athletes, was the club’s first BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) member. A member of the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians and of Tututni ancestry, Sanders spent most of his adult life playing or coaching sports at Chemawa Indian School in Salem.

Sanders competed in football, track, baseball, basketball, wrestling, boxing and bicycle racing. He was inducted into the American Indian Athletic Hall of Fame in 1972 and the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame in 1999.

Sanders was also a member of MAC — at that time Multnomah Amateur Athletic Club or MAAC — from at least 1899 – 1905,

and helped bring success to the football and track and field teams. In a retrospective track article published in the May 22, 1920, issue of The Winged M, Frank E. Watkins noted that Sanders won the shotput event and took second place in the 16-pound hammer throw and discus throw events at a Pacific Northwest Association track and field meet in August 1899. Watkins, who also recalled Sanders’ legacy of success in football, wrote “He was a sterling athlete and always a gentleman.” In the years before his death in 1957, Sanders attended several social events at MAC to reminisce with other former club athletes.”
