A

s I walk through the halls of our club today, I am often reminded of the fields at West Point where my own journey in leadership truly began.

In 1987, I had the distinct honor of serving as the first African American Co-Captain Daniel Williams of the West Point PRESIDENT Lacrosse team. On those fields, “leadership” wasn’t just a concept we discussed in classrooms; it was something earned through discipline and the unwavering commitment to the person standing next to you. Whether it was as a defender or a midfielder, I learned that while individual skill can win a game, it is the collective strength and shared vision of a team that defines a legacy.

Those early lessons followed me through a 32-year career in the U.S. Army and into the boardrooms of the corporate world. Now, as I look out at our MAC community — which I firmly believe is the home of America’s greatest athletic community — I see that same spirit of competitive excellence and leadership alive in every corner of our club.

Investing in the Next Generation This month’s issue of The Winged M highlights the incredible opportunities available to our younger members to compete and represent Team MAC. Seeing our youth embrace the “M” on their jerseys brings back fond memories of my own invitations to the USA World Lacrosse Team in the late ’80s. The pride of representing something larger than yourself is a powerful motivator. At the MAC, we aren’t just teaching our young members how to swim, climb, or play tennis; we’re providing them with a laboratory for life, where they learn the resilience and teamwork necessary to become the leaders of tomorrow. You can learn more about Team MAC on page 32, and be sure to read Athletic Director Lisa Miller’s column for her personal take on our MAC athletes.

Speaking of excellence, I want to take a moment to celebrate this year’s MAC Scholar Athletes. We are recognizing 30 outstanding high school seniors from across the region who have excelled both in their studies and in their respective sports. These young men and women represent the pinnacle of what it means to be a student-athlete, and their

accomplishments are a testament to the fact that the discipline required for athletics is a catalyst for academic and personal success.

Shaping Our Future Leadership Leadership at the MAC also extends beyond the court and the field. As we continue to move our club forward in this milestone 135th anniversary year, Board of Trustees nominations for the 2027-30 term are now open, and we are looking for members who are ready to step up and help shape our future.

Member leadership has always been one of the greatest strengths of our club, and we are seeking a variety of perspectives to ensure our board reflects the vibrant, diverse community we serve. Whether you are considering serving yourself or know a fellow member whose experience and vision would make them an outstanding trustee, I encourage you to get involved.

My own induction into the Long Island Metropolitan Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2022 was a humbling reminder that the impact we make on our sports and our communities lasts long after the final whistle blows.

Let’s continue to build this community together, fostering a culture where every member has the opportunity to lead, compete, and succeed.

W

hen members ask me what makes Team MAC special, they usually expect me to talk about regional and national qualifiers, tournament wins, or athletes breaking records. And while we certainly had plenty of those during Lisa Miller the 2025 – 26 season, ATHLETIC DIRECTOR when I look back on this past year, those aren’t the moments that stand out the most.

Instead, I keep coming back to the resiliency and community demonstrated by our Team MAC families following the May 2 incident.

When our facilities were temporarily disrupted, every one of our 9 junior competitive programs adapted quickly. In the weeks that followed, our teams practiced at 17 offsite locations across the Portland area as neighboring organizations generously opened their doors. Coaches rebuilt schedules, parents coordinated pick-ups and drop-offs all over town, athletes adjusted without complaint, and even our end-of-season banquets, delayed and held in different locations and rooms than originally planned, still came together.

Maybe not perfectly. But meaningfully.

It turns out Team MAC is more than our beloved Clubhouse. It’s the people who make the MAC what it is.

That became even clearer to me at the Swim Team banquet, which we held offsite at the Hilton. If you’ve spent any time around Team MAC, chances are you’ve met legendary member volunteer leader Alicia Ahn. Alicia asked parents to stand as she read through the volunteer roles that made the season possible. At a certain point, it felt like nearly every parent in the room had stood up at least once. It took more than 10 minutes just to recognize them all. And in that moment, it was impossible not to recognize what makes Team MAC work.

Youth sports simply don’t happen without parents and volunteers. One swim meet. One weekend. More than 100 volunteer shifts.

That level of commitment quietly repeats itself throughout the season.

The same spirit exists across all 9 Team MAC programs. Whether it’s serving on a committee, organizing banquets, timing races, keeping score, coordinating travel, or simply

being the parent who always says, “I’ve got it,” the Team MAC experience simply doesn’t happen without people willing to give their time to others.

The beauty of all that commitment is that it creates an environment where young athletes can thrive. And thrive they certainly did.

More than 700 junior athletes represented MAC across Basketball, Climbing, Dance, Women’s and Men’s Gymnastics, Ski & Snowboard, Artistic Swimming, Swimming, and Volleyball. Across those programs, athletes earned state championships, regional titles, national qualifications, club records, and podium finishes.

As a former student-athlete, I’m often asked what the biggest benefit of youth sports is. My answer is never the wins. It’s the less visible things — learning how to respond when things don’t go your way, how to support the people around you, and how to keep perspective when things get hard. Those lessons can be difficult to articulate in a magazine column, but they’re easy to recognize when you spend time around our teams. And they tend to last a lot longer than the season.

It turns out Team MAC is more than our beloved Clubhouse. It’s the people who make the MAC what it is.

As August begins, so does another Team MAC season. New athletes will put on a MAC uniform for the first time. Returning athletes will set new goals. Families will once again fill our pools, courts, gyms, climbing walls, and studios.

There will be victories worth celebrating.

There will be challenges worth navigating.

There always are.

But more importantly, there will be another opportunity to experience what makes Team MAC so special, not just 9 competitive programs, but a community of people who continually show up for one another.

Here’s to another season of learning, competing, and strengthening the community that makes Team MAC so much more than sport.

Playing for the Rip City Remix

Globetrotter Goes Pro Being the first local player to join the ranks of the Rip City Remix is an honor that MAC’s own Cameron Parker doesn’t take lightly. If anything, it’s motivated him to facilitate the same opportunities for other kids growing up with similar hoop dreams — in the form of the Cameron Parker Elite Skills Camp.

“I don't look like Wemby. I am not some super big, tall, athletic guy. I've never dunked in a game before, you know. That’s really why I wanted to have this camp, so kids could see me,” Parker says. “I feel like when kids see me, they see hope as someone who isn’t 6’8” or 6’9”, but who had a foundation to be able to be good, a foundation built in the same place where they’re members.”

Along with affordability of tickets and creative promotions, this accessibility of players has been a driving force in the resurgence of minor league sports in recent years. As the G League team for the Portland Trail Blazers, the Remix plays their home games at University of Portland’s Chiles Center, further connecting the community to the game.

This is a bridge that Parker has experience building all around the world. After graduating from Jesuit High School — where he earned First-Team All-State honors and was named the Metro League Player of the Year during his senior season — he attended Sacred Heart University in Connecticut and University of Montana before transferring to Portland State as a fifth-year senior.

Since then, he’s played professionally in Tokyo, Japan; Germany; and Cape Verde and Senegal in Africa. Most recently he took the court for another G League team, the Santa Cruz Warriors.

“It feels like I came full circle,” Parker says of being back in Portland, which also brought him back to the MAC. “Now that the club has the basketball shooting machine, I always reserve that. So, I'll come in here and probably shoot 400 or 500 shots every day.”

After that, it’s off to the whirlpool, steam room, and ice bath, or perhaps a session with the NormaTec compression equipment.

regulars at Open Run Basketball or personal trainers such as Jake Hickock, with whom he’s currently lifting.

“As long as I can remember, is as long as I've been a member,” he says, adding that he recently had someone approach him to ask why he keeps playing at the MAC when he’s on the Remix.

“I don't think I'm bigger than anybody else just because of the team that I play on. I still enjoy playing here, and I still like talking to all the people here. If you just stay humble, good things will happen to you,” he explains.

“I used to come in here with my dad, at like 9, 10 o'clock at night, and it was just us.

That kind of instilled the foundation on being good at basketball. Without the MAC, I definitely don't think I'd be the person or athlete that I am.”

CLUB LIFE

“Stay in your lane” is generally good advice, especially for swimmers, but not for Van Mathias. The former MAC Aquatics star recently set the American record for the 50-meter breaststroke at the 2026 Bergen Swim Festival in Norway. It’s a particularly noteworthy feat when one considers that he was primarily a butterfly swimmer for fourfifths of his college career.

But in his fifth year of eligibility — due to COVID — at the University of Indiana, Mathias talked to his coaches and asked how he could best support the team’s needs. Thus, 2023 saw him exploring the sprint freestyle and some breaststroke, a transition that paid off with him taking 2nd place in the 100-yard breaststroke at that year’s NCAA Championships.

Just when it seemed like he had found a new lease on love for his sport, Mathias graduated and took a position as director of swimming operations at his alma mater.

“I called it quits. I was like, ‘I am done,’” he recalls. He decided to enjoy the rest of his time living in Indiana before returning to Portland to live.

Then a funny thing happened. In May of 2025, a conversation with his bosses, and now coaches again, saw them encouraging him to pursue his temporarily dormant dreams of competing internationally, and reassuring him that he could keep his job while doing so.

“That summer, I ended up making the national team for breaststroke, and that's kind of where it started,” he says. “Changing events, strokes, and training presented a new challenge and a new outlook on swimming that I hadn't really experienced for a long time.

“If you told me 2 years ago that I'd be breaking American records and swimming full time again, I wouldn't have believed you.

It kind of feels surreal.”

In a sport that often sees athletes peak much earlier, Mathias is thrilled to be defying the odds. This month, he turns 26, and what better gift could a competitive athlete ask for than to once again be at the top of his game?

“You're not making the big bucks being a professional swimmer. A lot of the best

athletes in college, they just move on. They get a job. I'm kind of proof that if you do take a chance, pursue it, and keep going, good things can still happen. It's not the end of the road once you graduate college.”

Mathias adds that he credits his continued success to his formative years swimming for the MAC. He says that he’s gotten wiser over the years, but the technical development and character building are due to coaches such as Cindy von Weller, Spencer Cromm, Gary Leach, and Alex Nikitin.

“They were instrumental in creating my swimming career and getting me to where I wanted to go eventually. It's been crazy because it has not been a linear path at all.”

W

hile summer brings increased activity throughout the club, it also marks an important season for facility improvements. Across the MAC, projects are underway to restore impacted areas, invest in club infrastructure, enhance athletic and social spaces, and plan for future improvements. Below is an update on several projects members may see taking place throughout the coming months.

General Club Improvements Parking Structure Elevator Improvements July 5 – Aug. 10 Both elevators serving the MAC Parking Structure are temporarily unavailable while the club completes a significant elevator improvement project. The work includes upgrades designed to improve reliability, enhance performance, and support the long-term operation of the elevators. The project is expected to continue through approximately Aug. 10.

During construction, members can continue to access the club via the Fourth Floor Entrance, Skybridge, exterior stairways, and the firstfloor crosswalk to the Main Entrance. ADA parking is available on the first floor of the garage near the Salmon Street ramp and crosswalk for the duration of the project. Additional Child Care drop-off and pickup parking spaces are available near the Fourth Floor Entrance, and spaces reserved for families are located on the garage's first floor.

50-Meter & West Pools / Main & West Gyms Close for Annual Maintenance August – September MAC conducts its annual pool cleaning and maintenance this month to the 50-Meter and West Pools. First up is the 50-meter Pool, which is unavailable Aug. 5 – 16. The pool reopens for member use on Monday, Aug. 17. The West Pool then closes Aug. 17 – Sept. 6, reopening for members on Monday, Sept. 7.

The Main and West Gyms close Aug. 20 – 30 while crews work on annual refinishing. The Cage, Fit Zone, and Indoor Track are unavailable during the work, and all scheduled programming in those areas is canceled.

Reading Lounge Renovation Summer – Fall 2026 Guided by years of planning and member feedback, the Reading Lounge is being renovated to better support everyday use while preserving the character and comfort members value. Construction is underway, with the space expected to reopen in the fall.

Tennis Barrel Roof Enhancement Project & Temporary Court Operations This month, the Tennis Barrel Roof Enhancement Project begins, a long-awaited investment that will significantly improve the indoor tennis experience. Enhancements include improved insulation, upgraded LED uplighting, new court curtains, and fresh paint.

To complete this work, courts 1 – 4 on the fifth floor will undergo a 6-week closure from Aug. 10 through Sept. 21. During this time, 3 indoor courts (5-7) and 2 outdoor courts will remain available at the club. These temporary adjustments will impact member play opportunities, and the Tennis Committee has reviewed and supports the operating plan designed to maximize member court access while allowing essential programming to continue.

To provide as much court access as possible during the closure, lessons must be booked at least 48 hours in advance. Any unbooked lesson court time will be released for member reservations 2 days prior to use. Group lessons will also be prioritized over private lessons whenever possible to serve the greatest number of members.

Temporary adjustments to court reservations, lessons, leagues, camps, and other tennis programming will be in effect throughout the project.

Mel Fox Amateur Athlete of the Year Award The Mel Fox Amateur Athlete of the Year Award is given to the individual or team who has demonstrated athletic excellence, sportsmanship, and leadership during the course of an athletic year running from September to August.

Joe Loprinzi Inspirational Award The Joe Loprinzi Inspirational Award is presented annually to an individual who inspires others to achieve their goals.

Nominations are limited to intermediate

members, dues-paying individual resident members who have voting rights, and the immediate family of junior members of those individual resident members.

Hank Marcus Lifelong Athlete Award The Hank Marcus Lifelong Athlete Award serves as annual recognition of a member who has demonstrated a commitment to an active and healthy lifestyle throughout their lives. It celebrates a consistent pursuit of physical fitness and maintained passion for activity.

The Celebration of Champions also honors members who won a national championship in 2026, as well as the top amateur athletes in the Open Age Groups of national and international competitions. They are recognized as inductees into the Gallery of Champions. Come together with the club community to celebrate the commitment to excellence that membership represents.

House Committee

Monthly Report The House Committee enforces the rules of conduct for members and guests by investigating infractions and recommending sanctions to the Board of Trustees. Sanctions • A 13-year-old member with 2 years of tenure was suspended for 6 months for violating club rules Disregard of Guest Policy, Lending Membership Credentials, and General Behavior Unbecoming a Member. This disciplinary action was taken when the junior member violated a series of club rules within a minimal time span despite being previously warned.

• A 28-year-old member with 21 years of tenure was suspended for 4 months for violating club rules Rules Violation and General Behavior Unbecoming a Member.

This disciplinary action was taken when the member drove recklessly in the Member Garage and refused to provide credentials.

• A 61-year-old member with 34 years of tenure was provided a Warning Letter in lieu of suspension. This disciplinary action was taken when the House Committee received reports of the member revving his engine loudly at other members.

• A 28-year-old member with 21 years of tenure was provided a Warning Letter in lieu of suspension. This disciplinary action was taken when the House Committee received reports of the member taking products from the Fit Desk without paying.

Rules Reminders General Behavior Unbecoming a Member: Any behavior deemed inappropriate for a member of Multnomah Athletic Club, regardless of reference to specific Club rule.

Disregard of Guest Policy: Violating guest or event attendee policies, including but not limited to failing to register athletic or social guests, failing to pay applicable guest fees, disregarding frequency Lending Membership Credentials: Lending a membership ID credential, membership number or personal information to gain entrance to the club or acquiring club products or services.

Meet the Newest MAC Scholar Athletes

F

or 35 years, the partnership between the Multnomah Athletic Club (MAC) and the Multnomah Athletic Foundation (MAF) has been about opening doors for young people to grow, connect, and discover what’s possible. Together, MAC and MAF have created something special: a community where athletics and education come together to support the next generation.

The MAC Scholar Athlete program is a vital part of that story. Each year, 30 local high schools nominate three students who stand out — not just for how they compete, but for how they show up in the classroom and in their communities. From there, one student from each school is selected through a merit-based application process led by the Foundation, recognizing well-rounded excellence and potential.

Those selected receive more than recognition. The program includes a 2-year membership to MAC, opening doors to world-class facilities, mentorship, and a community that supports their continued growth. Each Scholar Athlete also receives a $1,500 college scholarship from the foundation, reinforcing the program’s commitment to educational advancement and future opportunity.

But ask past Scholar Athletes what mattered most, and it’s rarely just the access or the scholarship. It’s the people. It’s the feeling of walking into a space where you belong, where you’re encouraged, and where you can connect with others who inspire you. It’s the

relationships built along the way that often last far beyond the program itself.

And it works both ways. These students bring energy, perspective, and leadership that strengthen the MAC community as a whole.

They remind everyone of what’s possible when young people are given the chance to lead and grow.

MAF and MAC honor the schools and families who support these students, and recognize the collective impact made possible through the enduring partnership of the club and the foundation.

ARTISTIC SWIMMING As we reflect on another incredible season at MAC Synchro, we are filled with pride for all that our athletes have accomplished.

This year was defined not only by outstanding performances in the pool, but also by the resilience, adaptability, and commitment shown by our athletes, coaches, and families.

Through every challenge and triumph, they continued to support one another and represent the very best of MAC. A special congratulations to Megan Rim and Siya Desai, who competed at the Junior National Championships in Buffalo, New York. Their technical duet placed 10th in the nation, while Megan’s technical solo earned an impressive 12th-place finish.

Our June 3 Junior Exhibition celebrated the hard work of our novice, intermediate, age group, and masters swimmers. The crowdfavorite Mermen routine, set to Let’s Hear It for the Boys, brought energy and laughter to a memorable evening honoring our entire MAC family.

We’re also excited to share that this July at the Junior Olympic Championships, Megan Rim won the gold medal in the 15–17 Technical Solo event! Additionally, the 15–17 Technical Duet of Megan Rim and Siya Desai earned a silver medal. The 15–17 Team finished 7th and 10th in the Technical and Free Team events. Congrats to all!

The 2025 winter season was an exciting and meaningful milestone for MAC Basketball, marking my first season leading the program. On the court, several of our teams captured HoopSource tournament championships and competed with tremendous energy, toughness, and growth throughout the year. While those accomplishments were exciting, the true highlight of the season was the culture we continued to build across the program.

Our focus has been centered on creating community and teaching values that extend far beyond basketball. Through intentional coaching, relationship-building, and meeting athletes where they are, we worked to push both the expectations and ceiling of the program higher each day.

The season culminated with our annual trip to Seaside, where every team competed valiantly and created lasting memories together off the court. From impromptu games at the park to team dinners and time spent at the arcade, the weekend reflected the connection, joy, and togetherness that define MAC Basketball. We are incredibly proud of the impact this season has had on our athletes and families.

Looking ahead to the winter basketball season, families should mark their calendars for several important dates. Our Winter Team Tryouts take place on the weekend of Sept. 12 – 13. To help athletes prepare, MAC Basketball hosts a Pre-Tryout Clinic on Sept. 5, providing players an opportunity to get on the court, sharpen their skills, and learn more about our program expectations. We also kick off the season with our Fall Meet & Greet on Sept. 9, where families can meet coaches, learn about the upcoming season, and connect with the MAC Basketball community. Additional details and registration information will be shared in the coming weeks.

CLIMBING

Brandon, Lincon, Aiden, and James MAC Climbing ended its season competing at USAC Youth National Championships held at USA Climbing’s Training Center in Salt Lake City, Utah, from June 25 – July 3. MAC had 6 athletes compete in the Bouldering discipline, 6 athletes compete in the Lead/Top Rope discipline, and 12 athletes compete in the Speed discipline.

As a team, MAC placed 45th in the Boulder discipline, 43rd in the Lead/TR discipline, and 6th in the Speed discipline, for an overall placement of 17th in the country. In the speed discipline, Josh Jan once again earned a spot on the Youth National Team, while teammates David Twigg, Sophie Yang, and Everett Wilson earned a spot on the Youth National Development Team. For lead and boulder, Reeder Smith qualified for Semi-Finals in both disciplines, placing 15th and 12th respectively.

Our National Championship rankings were not as good as last year, but I am proud of our athletes and how they performed. It was an amazing season overall, and I was grateful to be able to watch outgoing seniors Brooks, David, Josh, Reeder, and Tejal compete at that level one last time before going off to college. Big thanks to all our athletes for their hard work this season, and to their parents for supporting the climbers, the coaching staff, and the sport at large by volunteering at so many events.

The 2025 – 26 dance season has been full of exciting changes and incredible achievements! We said a heartfelt goodbye to Maria Albaugh and warmly welcomed Ozzy Tolbirt to the team. Throughout the season, our dancers have truly shined — earning high scores and overall awards at competitions.

They recently wrapped up their Nationals competitions in July, performing in both Anaheim, California and Seaside, Oregon. Watching their growth, dedication, and teamwork has been inspiring, and we are so proud of everything they’ve accomplished.

The MAC Men’s Gymnastics Team built on last year’s success, and our most veteran team in years showed how valuable experience is. For the first time since 2020, we had gymnasts compete in Level 10, the highest junior level of USA Gymnastics. Congratulations to Ian Reese, Sheldon Jensen, and Isaac Rheingold.

Further congrats go to Ian Reese for being MAC Gymnastics’ first recipient of the Joe Loprinzi Inspirational Award.

We have a robust and exciting team of first and second-year gymnasts who learned a ton and performed well this year. We look forward to what they’ll have to offer in the coming years.

Our mid-level guys did a great job showing them the ropes and winning their own accolades. There’s a lot of potential here!

Not to be outshined by his athletes, Coach Adam Pierce was voted Oregon Men’s Gymnastics Compulsory Coach of the Year! Congratulations, it was well earned!

Lastly, we also say farewell to three seniors: Ian Reese, Tristan Ashton, and Sheldon Jensen. These young men have made incredible sacrifices and poured immense amounts of time, effort, and energy into this program. They have each left their unique mark, and we are better for it. Our team has grown, and our culture has thrived because of you. Thank you.

Xceptionals (Level 6-9, and Xcel Second Year Platinum)

We had a great year as a program and continued to build a strong foundation across all levels. There is a lot of momentum right now, and it has been exciting to see that start to show up in bigger ways throughout the season.

Xcel had a standout year, particularly at the Silver and Platinum levels, where our athletes spent much of the season on top of the podium, both individually and as a team. We had several state champions, regional qualifiers, and a lot of strong performances from start to finish. Our upper levels took flight for some sunshine in Florida and came home with several personal bests and program high scores.

We also had the chance to spend the year watching our two seniors, Elsa Roberts and Avery Zehntbauer, finish off their careers. Making it to senior year in gymnastics is a huge accomplishment, and it was special to watch them enjoy that final season and say goodbye to the sport in such a beautiful way.

SKI & SNOWBOARD What a season! Epic on many levels. Historic, one might say. The 2025 – 26 MAC Ski & Snowboard season challenged us with one of the most difficult snow years in recent memory, forcing schedule changes, postponements, cancellations, and re-homed competitions across the Pacific Northwest. Yet adversity also created opportunity: to be creative, to pivot, to grow, and to come together as a community.

Our athletes rose to the moment. U12 earned personal bests at Buddy Werner Championships. U14 entered their first U.S. Ski & Snowboard races, including first Super-G starts. Two athletes landed the first cork 720s in program history, and another strong group qualified for national-level competition. Across alpine, freeride, and snowboard, MAC athletes showed resilience, courage, creativity, and joy.

Those achievements were made possible by an extraordinary community. Our coaches provided leadership, perspective, patience, and belief. Our parent volunteers and families drove, loaded gear, adjusted calendars, supported events, and stepped into countless roles that helped the program thrive. The Ski & Snowboard Committee’s recognition as Athletic Committee of the Year for the first time reflected that same commitment and care.

At our Annual Awards Banquet this spring, we celebrated more than podiums, personal records, first races, first tricks, and national qualifications. We celebrated the growth, teamwork, and heart that define MAC Ski & Snowboard. Thank you to every athlete, coach, parent, volunteer, committee member, and supporter who made this season one to remember. I could not be prouder of what we accomplished together.

SWIMMING

2025-26 Swim Team

The Junior Swim Team had an incredible season, which was highlighted by some of the highest attendances at Championship Meets in recent memory! For context, last year at our Short Course 11 – 14-year-old Championships, we qualified 15 relays (14 girls, 1 boys); this year, we qualified 43 relays (27 girls, 16 boys)! We also qualified a 9 – 10-year-old Boys Relay at Age Group Regionals for the first time in at least 10 years!

Our success this year can be attributed to many factors, but if I had to boil it all down, the number one factor would have to be the culture of support that we have here. That support is shared between athletes, parents, and coaches.

The athletes support each other in practice and at competitions by encouraging each other whether they are struggling or succeeding.

Positive words to each other during tough sets (“Halfway there!” and “Last one, fast one!”) high fives after hard sets are completed, cheering each other on during races, hugs and kind words after disappointing

races, and getting breakfast together after morning practice are just some of the ways that the athletes support each other.

Parents support in so many ways: volunteering on their days off from work to officiate and time at swim meets, taking teammates to and from practices and temporarily adopting kids during travel competitions, planning and setting up team activities for more cohesive culture, and everything that they do for their kids and teammates.

Coaches support each other by covering each other’s practices or competitions so they can take an occasional well-earned day off or attend a friend’s wedding, for example. We meet weekly to make sure things are going in the right directions with our squads and to troubleshoot any areas of concern.

It might be too cliche to say we are a family, but we certainly are a community; a community that supports each other through the easy and the tough times.

VOLLEYBALL What a season it has been for MAC Volleyball! From championship finishes and national-level competition to breakthrough performances and tremendous team growth, our athletes and coaches made the most of every opportunity and gave us countless reasons to celebrate.

Among our season highlights, 12-1 Elite finished as runnerup at the Nike Boston National Qualifier and ended the season ranked 12th in the region. Our 14-2 team enjoyed a breakthrough year, winning multiple Power League tournaments, capturing a Power League Qualifier championship, and climbing an impressive 27 spots in the regional rankings. The 14-1 Elite also had a remarkable season, moving up 31 spots to finish ranked 19th in the region. At the national level, 18-1 earned silver at the TransPac Hawaii Championship, finished 2nd overall at the Emerald City Classic, placed 6th in the region, and capped off their club careers by winning their bracket at AAU Nationals in Orlando.

As a program, 8 MAC teams qualified for Regional Championships, and we are proud to celebrate a senior athlete who will continue her volleyball career at the collegiate level.

While the results are exciting, what stands out most is the growth, resilience, leadership, and teamwork displayed throughout the season. Thank you to our athletes, coaches, and families for making this such a memorable year. Go MAC!

Get to Know Olympian Nathan Adrian Join MAC Swim to Welcome this 5-Time Olympic Gold Medalist

O

n Saturday, Sept. 19, MAC Swim hosts 3-time Olympian and 8-time Olympic medalist Nathan Adrian for a special swim clinic and keynote address.

Adrian was born in 1988 into a Pacific Northwest swimming family and began swimming at age 5, following 2 older siblings in competition.

Over the next 29 years, he accumulated an incredible list of achievements — including swimming at the University of California, Berkeley where he was a 5-time NCAA champion. He competed for Team USA at the 2008 Beijing, 2012 London, and 2016 Rio Olympics and earned 5 Golds, 1 Silver, and 2 Bronze medals. He competed in multiple World Aquatic Championships and Pan Pacific Games, and was on the USA National team for an astounding 14 years. In total, he has won 32 medals in international competition.

Nathan underwent treatment for testicular cancer in 2019 and attempted to make it on to a 4th Olympic team at the 2020 Olympic Trials. He missed the spot for the 50m Freestyle, finishing 3rd behind Caleb Dressel and Michael Andrew. In 2019, Nathan and a teammate from Berkeley purchased and now run the AC Swim School, which was started in 1959 by Ann Curtis (1948 Olympic medalist). He is married and has 2 small children who are probably already great swimmers.

In May 2026, Nathan was inducted into the prestigious International Swimming Hall of Fame. In his acceptance speech he focused on the community that makes swimming the sport that it is. He said: “Coaches believed in me before I had earned it. Teammates carried me through the mornings when I had nothing left. People in this community gave me more than the sport required them to give, and they did it all without keeping score. And then there’s what swimming gives beyond itself. This community saves lives — literally. Every child who learns to be safe in the water, every drowning prevented, every family spared. That is this community’s work too.”

MAC Golf Scramble at Tualatin Country Club MAC golfers gathered at Tualatin Country Club in June for an afternoon of friendly competition, camaraderie, and excellent golf. The shotgun-format scramble brought together players of varying experience levels for a relaxed event centered on teamwork, connection, and a shared appreciation for the game.

The course provided an ideal setting for the outing, with outstanding playing conditions and fast greens that challenged teams throughout the round. Patrick Cooney, Gary Scrivens, Fred Winter, and Peter Norman claimed 1st place with an impressive score of 56. Eric Bowler, James Randles, Mark Mitchell, and Christian Casebeer finished 2nd with a 60, while Stanley Cocke, Heather Kmetz, Brent Young, and Mark Hinrichs followed closely in 3rd with a 61.

The day also featured individual contests. Taylor and Enrico Masanga earned longest-drive honors, and Raymond Duchek won the closest-to-the-pin competition.

For many participants, the opportunity to play a premier local course and spend time with fellow MAC members was just as memorable as the competition.

“It was great fun playing Tualatin Country Club, the greens were fast and the course was in outstanding condition,” said Mark Mitchell.

“I look forward to doing it again next year!”

The event marked another successful addition to MAC’s growing golf programming. Thank you to everyone who participated, contributed feedback, and helped create an enjoyable experience. The Golf Committee looks forward to continuing to build opportunities for members to play, connect, and enjoy golf together.

ast summer’s Yoga in the Vines event was, by any measure, a standout. Members gathered at Stoller Family Estate for a morning that blended mindful movement, fresh Oregon air, and the quiet beauty of wine country — and the response was so enthusiastic that the Yoga Committee didn’t hesitate: They’re bringing it back.

Mark your calendar for Sunday, Aug. 23. The morning kicks off with doors opening at 9:30 am at Stoller Family Estate and Vineyards’ Experience Center in Dayton, Oregon — giving you time to settle in and take in the sweeping views over the vineyard before classes begin.

Two outdoor yoga classes run simultaneously on the grounds of the Experience Center, with the rows of grapevines stretching out below as your backdrop. A gentle class offers a slower, more

restorative experience — ideal for all levels — while a more vigorous session is on offer for those looking to move with more intensity. Instructors for both classes are to be announced — watch for an update from the Yoga Committee.

The fun doesn’t end when the mats roll up. After class, members and guests sit down to a complimentary lunch provided by Stoller Vineyards, with wine available for purchase. It’s a morning that earns its afternoon.

MME0914 All voices and abilities welcome, no auditions! Whether your only singing experience is solo car karaoke or singing in the shower, or you have many years’ experience singing with other choirs, the MelloMacs co-ed choir has a spot ready for you.

From its inception in 1961, the MelloMacs choir is beloved by audiences for singing favorites from the American Songbook, focusing on 1930 – 1970s songs from Hollywood, Broadway, and radio. In addition to annual performances at the MAC, including the Children’s Holiday Party and a Spring Sing-Along Concert, the choir performs weekly concerts on Monday nights at senior living communities throughout the Portland metro area.

Under the inspiring leadership of internationally famed vocalist Marilyn Keller and accompanied by award-winning pianist Kit Taylor, the MelloMacs generally schedules rehearsals and regular performances from September to May on Monday nights from 6:30 – 8 pm. We post our rehearsal and performance schedule and song lists, as well as sheet music and recordings of each song (including separate recordings for soprano, alto, tenor, and bass parts. Members can join in anytime!

Summer Reading List

S

ummer vacations can be sensational opportunities to catch up on reading. With the MAC’s Case for Culture on its own break as the Reading Lounge undergoes renovation, the club’s Community & Heritage Committee came forward with a list of books designed to add both pleasure and new cultural experiences to any season.

From historical fiction to memoir to the social sciences, this list has a suggestion for every literary proclivity. Given that many of the books on this list deal with adult subject matters, seeking out synopses before diving in is highly recommended.

Whether poolside or passing time while riding the MAX to work, these books are guaranteed to leave you thinking long after the rains have returned.
