A LETTER FROM LEADERSHIP
“
Behind every milestone in this report is a student who gained confidence, a family that found answers, and a community that chose to invest in possibility. Maria Reed
Dear Windward Community, This year will be both a celebration of Windward’s century of impact and a powerful reminder of why our mission is more relevant than ever. Every day, we see students develop the skills, confidence and love of learning that transform not only their experience in the classroom, but also their sense of what is possible.
Alexis Pochna
We also marked an important milestone: the 10th anniversary of our Manhattan campus opening. What began as a bold vision a decade ago has grown into a thriving community and an essential part of Windward’s mission, extending our reach and sharing our expertise more broadly. All of this meant that last year, our community showed up in support! Through extraordinary generosity and partnership, you helped us surpass our fundraising goal, ensuring critical investments in our students, faculty, campuses and programs. Behind every milestone in this report is a student who gained confidence, a family that found answers, and a community that chose to invest in possibility. Together, these investments will shape the Windward experience for years to come. Looking ahead, we are energized by another year of opportunity to make a difference in the lives of children who have language-based learning disabilities. We will deepen our focus on the Windward Institute and its vital role in advancing research, professional learning, and the dissemination of evidence-based practices that benefit students beyond our classrooms. At the same time, the Board of Trustees and school leadership are thoughtfully preparing for an important leadership transition while remaining focused on ensuring continuity and building on Windward’s longstanding tradition of excellence. During this year’s Centennial celebration, we will honor the generations of educators, families, and supporters whose dedication and vision created the foundation upon which we stand today. As Windward begins its second century, your investment ensures that countless more students will discover the confidence, skills, and opportunities that not only drive academic success, but change the trajectories of their lives. Thank you for your partnership, your generosity, and your belief in Windward’s mission. With gratitude,
Maria Reed Board of Trustees President

or 100 years, Windward has been a pioneer of progressive education and student success. Research and evidence illustrate that students with language-based learning disabilities can learn to navigate the educational landscape if they’re given the right tools for remediation. With a proven program grounded in evidence-based instruction, Windward not only helps students to improve academically but also helps them build confidence, develop self-advocacy skills and access resources to prepare for a return to mainstream educational settings.

EVERY GIFT SUPPORTS A GREAT STORY The School’s impact matters on two scales simultaneously. First is the impact on the individual child – the students in the classroom. Second is the impact on the broader world – the research and expertise shared and extended by the Windward Institute far beyond our walls. The support of our donors is critical. Windward would not be able to develop and run our programs without you.

We are beyond grateful that our grandson is able to flourish due to the extraordinary foundation Windward provided, which is why we support the Windward Fund. We want to give to other children what we are so deeply thankful our grandson was able to experience.

Philanthropy Expands Windward’s Reach

“
... the knowledge developed at Windward should benefit not only the students in our classrooms, but also the many children and families still searching for suppport.
8
At Windward, we believe every child with a language-based learning disability deserves access to the specialized instruction they need to thrive. Expanding access is more than a strategic priority; it is central to our mission. Through philanthropy, Windward can not only sustain that commitment, but also invest in new ways of reaching families, sharing expertise, and increasing awareness of language-based learning disabilities and effective interventions. This year, donor support helped us expand our impact in meaningful ways. A new awareness campaign on Metro-North trains introduced more families to Windward and the possibility of a different educational path for their child. Through the Windward Institute, we partnered with schools, provided professional learning opportunities for educators, and offered free early reading screenings through local library partnerships, extending our expertise beyond our campuses. These efforts reflect a simple but powerful belief: the knowledge developed at Windward should benefit not only the students in our classrooms today, but also the many children and families still searching for support. We are encouraged by the progress we continue to see. In fiscal year 2026, admissions inquiries increased 101% over the previous year. Windward awarded $9.7 million in financial aid, up from $9 million the year before and $3.6 million a decade ago. Twenty percent of families received financial aid. Students of color now represent 29% of our total enrollment. Expanding access requires sustained investment, intentional outreach, and a willingness to create new pathways for students and families. Thanks to the generosity of our donors, more children are finding their way to Windward, more educators are benefiting from our expertise, and our impact continues to extend far beyond our campuses. Thank you for helping make that possible.
DONOR IMPACT
Tuition and Philanthropy: A Shared Investment in Windward Adhering to a thoughtful budget is at the center of every well-run organization, and independent schools are no exception. At Windward, annual fundraising helps bridge the gap between tuition revenue and the true cost of delivering one of the nation’s leading educational programs for students with language-based learning disabilities. The generosity of our community makes this possible through contributions to the Windward Fund, one of the most important and flexible forms of investment a donor can make in the School. Windward Fund gifts sustain the people, programs, and experiences that define a Windward education while providing the flexibility to direct resources where they are needed most. Giving to the Windward Fund, sometimes referred to as “general operating support,” is often described as helping to “keep the lights on.” While it certainly supports the day-to-day work of the School, unrestricted giving does much more. It enables Windward to respond to unexpected challenges, seize new opportunities, and make strategic investments that strengthen the School for both current and future students. We saw the value of that flexibility firsthand this year. Within a 48-hour period, two campuses were impacted by weather-related flooding, resulting in significant unbudgeted damage. Thanks to careful planning, a dedicated facilities team, and the financial flexibility provided by donor support, we were able to respond quickly, make critical repairs, and restore our facilities while maintaining our focus on student learning. At the heart of philanthropy is trust: the belief that an organization will use resources thoughtfully, strategically, and where they can make the greatest difference. We are deeply grateful to the 874 donors who made that investment in Windward this year. Many of the achievements highlighted throughout this report were made possible because of your partnership. Thank you for believing in Windward, supporting our mission, and helping ensure that students continue to benefit from the exceptional opportunities and experiences that define a Windward education.

Burhanuddin Taheraly ’27 Climbs Mount Kilimanjaro for a Cause This past March, Burhanuddin “B” Taheraly ’27, along with his family, took on an extraordinary challenge: climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. This journey required seven days of climbing and camping across a variety of terrain and in challenging conditions. But this feat was about more than reaching the summit. Before setting off, B decided to use this opportunity to fundraise for the Windward Fund and raise awareness of dyslexia and languagebased learning disabilities. As B shared, “Climbing Kilimanjaro is no easy task and raising awareness for a cause is even bigger than myself. And that’s really why I wanted to do it, to do something bigger than myself.”
“
limbing Kilimanjaro C is no easy task and raising awareness for a cause is even bigger than myself.
”
B attended Windward from grades 6 to 8 and reflected that, “those three years were the most impactful in my life…Windward really helped me grow and overcome my dyslexia and know that I am more than what holds me back.” When asked why he chose to support the Windward Fund, B replied, “to raise money to help students who need the same support that I needed when I was younger.” His motivation was simple: “Knowing that there are a lot more people who still need that help.” After seven days of climbing, B accomplished exactly what he set out to do, reaching the summit in just four and a half hours, a climb that takes many climbers more than six hours. Along the way, he also raised nearly $2,000 for the Windward Fund, which will support the people and the programs that make The Windward School so special. Thank you, B, for your hard work, dedication, and commitment to The Windward School! 10

Planning with Confidence: The Legacy Society
“
T hat’s the kind of legacy I want to leave—that even when we are gone, we are still helping Windward achieve its goals and fulfill its mission.
”
Windward is always looking to the future, and the Legacy Society is an important part of the philanthropic foundation that allows the School to plan for the long term with confidence. Legacy Society giving can take many forms, including a bequest, naming Windward as a beneficiary of a retirement account or life insurance policy, or establishing a charitable trust. These options allow families to include Windward in their estate plans in the way that aligns with their personal and financial goals.
Trustee David Friedland, a steadfast supporter of Windward for many years, has been deeply engaged in the board’s work to ensure the School’s long-term strength and sustainability. He reflected, “When the Legacy Society was introduced at a recent board meeting, the opportunity immediately clicked for me. I could see right away how Julie and I could give an additional leadership gift with very little impact to our family in the here and now, while making a meaningful difference to Windward’s future. That’s the kind of legacy I want to leave—that even when we are gone, we are still helping Windward achieve its goals and fulfill its mission.” It is this kind of generosity and foresight that helps position the School to thrive for generations to come. If you are interested in learning more about the Legacy Society, please contact Advancement Chief of Staff, Rosemary Downing-Espinal at rdowningespinal@thewindwardschool.org.

DONOR IMPACT
Some campaign achievements are immediately visible, including the state-of-the-art John J. Russell Campus, which opened in 2021 thanks to the largest single gift in our history from an anonymous donor. Others are less apparent but equally important. Campaign support strengthened endowments for financial aid and scholarships, helping ensure access to a Windward education for generations to come. It also provided the vision and infrastructure that enabled the Windward Institute, established in 2019, to grow into a thriving division of the School, extending Windward’s expertise beyond its campuses and into the broader educational community.
The Next Chapter Campaign, launched in 2019, is the most ambitious philanthropic effort in Windward’s history. Together, the community has raised over 91% toward the $40 million goal to enhance the experience of current and future students while investing in access, advocacy and initiatives that advance Windward’s vision of a world where every child with a languagebased learning disability is empowered to achieve unlimited success.
12
The campaign also reflected the generosity and sense of community that have always defined Windward. Following the tragic loss of Charlie Erdmann ’16, David and Sloan Greenspan, a Windward family whose extraordinary gift will help make the new Westchester Middle School turf field possible, dedicated the space as the Charlie Erdmann Memorial Field. The gift will transform an athletic facility into a lasting tribute to a beloved student, avid lacrosse player, friend, and cherished member of the community, ensuring Charlie’s memory remains woven into the daily life of the School he loved.
As the campaign comes to a close, the next chapter of Windward’s century-long story begins with gratitude for the thousands of donors, volunteers, families, alumni, faculty, staff, and friends who made this achievement possible.
That spirit of gratitude and paying it forward is reflected across generations of Windward families. Leigh Garry, alumni parent, former trustee, generous supporter, and tireless volunteer, recalls when her daughter Elizabeth arrived at Windward in 1998, “The Trustees, alumni parents and families had donated precious time and resources to create a school where she could succeed. These magnificent strangers changed our daughter’s life and allowed her access to all of life’s greatest gifts. As she charts her own course, we are honored to play a part for others who follow.”
When the Campaign Committee began this work, they could not have anticipated the challenges and opportunities that lay ahead. The School accelerated construction of the new Westchester Lower School in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, while the newly established Windward Institute continued to expand its reach and impact. In true Windward fashion, campaign volunteers, staff and former Head of School Jamie Williamson remained focused on what mattered most: supporting students and families.
Elizabeth Garry Ortiz ’07, a member of the Windward Institute Taskforce and incoming trustee, continues that family legacy. She joins fellow alumni leaders, including Denis O’Leary III ’06 and Reed Switzer ’19, whose service helps shape Windward’s future. Their involvement is a powerful reminder that the Next Chapter Campaign was about more than buildings, programs or fundraising milestones. It was an investment in generations of students and families whose lives will be transformed by Windward for years to come.

We are at a pivotal moment for the Windward Institute— one filled with tremendous opportunity, optimism, and a real sense of urgency.
For the past century, The Windward School has demonstrated what is possible when evidence-based instruction, deep expertise, and an unwavering belief in every student come together. As Windward celebrates its 100th anniversary, we have an extraordinary opportunity to build on that legacy and share its knowledge beyond the walls of the School, reaching educators, schools, and families across the country. This work is deeply personal to me. As someone who is dyslexic, I understand firsthand how transformative it can be when a young person is truly understood and given access to the right instruction and support. That experience has shaped my life and career and deepened my commitment to ensuring more students and families have those same opportunities. Through professional development, family education, research, and partnerships with libraries and public, charter, and independent schools, we are working to expand that access. None of this would be possible without our talented and deeply committed team, whose passion for this work is evident every day. At the same time, we are working closely with
Wellspring Consulting and a dedicated board committee on a comprehensive strategy for the future of the Windward Institute. This is an important opportunity to chart a clear path forward, define what makes the Institute uniquely positioned to lead, and determine where we can have the greatest impact for students, educators, and families. There is incredible energy around this work, and I feel fortunate to be part of this community at such an exciting moment. Thank you for believing in this work and for helping us carry Windward’s extraordinary legacy into its next century of impact. To the community we serve, Marcus Soutra

DONOR IMPACT
A Letter from Leadership For decades, Windward has been synonymous with excellence in educating students with language-based learning disabilities. Our evidence-based approach has changed the trajectory of students who have had the opportunity to attend our three New York campuses. Central to that success is Windward’s commitment to exceptional teacher training and professional development, a critical role supported by the Windward Institute. Over the last several years, the board and administration have also leveraged the Institute to extend Windward’s reach beyond the walls of our schools: training educators in proven instructional methods, building partnerships with leading research institutions, and advocating for effective approaches to remediate language-based learning disabilities. We are proud to share that the board recently reiterated its commitment to the Windward Institute and the vision it represents: a strategic opportunity to increase Windward’s impact and help shape the future of education and teacher training. Clearly, the Institute is the vehicle through which we can expand access to Windward’s proven, research-based program and ensure that more students, families, and
educators benefit from 100 years of Windward expertise. Through educator training, family support, research, free reading screenings, summer programs, and on-demand learning, the Institute allows us to bring proven practices to schools and communities well beyond Windward’s campuses. To those who have supported the Windward Institute because you believe every teacher should have access to Windward training and every child should have the opportunity to become a successful reader—thank you. Your generosity helps us to transform the lives of more children. We are tremendously optimistic about the future of the Windward Institute. We invite you to continue this journey with us as we create meaningful, lasting impact for students, families, educators, and communities. Sincerely,
Patty Wolff Chris Dooley and Patty Wolff Co-Chairs of the WI Committee
The Windward Institute Impact Three Ways The Windward Institute Is Reaching Within and Beyond Our Campuses The Windward Institute (WI) exists to provide ongoing training to The Windward School faculty based on the most current research on structured literacy and to share its expertise with other educators, schools, and parents in the broader community. This year, that work took three forms: yearlong COACHING partnerships with schools beyond our walls, core and newly expanded WORKSHOPS for educators both internally and externally, and free reading SCREENINGS for children across the tristate area. 15
COACHING that spreads across the whole school Through yearlong coaching and professional development partnerships, the WI worked alongside tristate area teachers and administrators. Together, they examined curricula and instructional methods to align them with best practices in structured literacy and all its components, including reading, writing and executive functioning skills. Every recommendation was designed to be practical and applicable in their lessons the next day. Partner teachers point to the practical scaffolding as what makes the difference. One noted that Windward’s team explained how to use the strategies within the framework of their existing curriculum: “EL leaves a lot of gaps in terms of writing, so filling those gaps with helpful inputs, I found, was beneficial.” Another described the value of seeing the work modeled: “I think the models and exemplars during
our meetings were helpful. Having access to the templates was also beneficial and made it easier for me to create worksheets and materials for our literacy block. It was nice to be able to refer to the videos to support me in learning how to teach into each organizer and task.” At a charter school in the Bronx, our coaching partnership helped drive meaningful gains in student achievement. The school reported a four-percentage-point increase in overall English Language Arts results, and, for the first time, more than 50% of students met grade-level expectations on their standardized tests. School leaders credited this milestone to the collaborative work between their team and our coaches.
WORKSHOPS that make the research applicable Our core courses, workshops, and larger multi-day institutes give educators both the why and the how: the science behind structured literacy and the demonstrations that highlight methods and explicit and systematic structures that can be put in place in their classrooms to reach all of their students. Through Waypoint Learning, our professional learning management system, educators can access instructional resources and participate in online professional learning opportunities.

SCREENINGS that give families real information Thanks to the continued support of an anonymous donor, the Early Literacy Endowment allowed the WI to reach three library sites and, for the first time, crossed state lines: the Melrose Branch of the New York Public Library in the Bronx (November 2025), Yonkers Riverfront Public Library (February 2026), and Stamford Public Library (April 2026).

“
The results of the screening are priceless for those families seeking to gain a better understanding of how their children decode [learn to read].
Having my boys participate in the reading screener offered by Windward provides me with accurate and specific assessment data which I can then use to target and build their foundational literacy skills… Through Windward’s reading screenings, I have learned that my children can make progress when taught with a systematic, explicit multisensory approach.
“
Coaching, workshops, screenings — three professional development tools that help foster student success. Each one carries structured literacy a little further from our campus and a little closer to the classrooms and living rooms where students are learning to read.

Q:
“
What would you say to someone considering a donation to the Institute?
The Institute is such a powerful organization and has such potential to change the world. I mean that literally — to change the world for dyslexic kids. Just support it however you can, and you will help many, many people and communities.

LEADERSHIP GIVING
We are deeply grateful to our donors whose generosity supports The Windward School. This year, for the second year, donor recognition reflects comprehensive giving across all contributions, inclusive of the Windward Fund, The Next Chapter Campaign pledge payments, endowed funds, and Kaleidoscope: The Windward School Benefit. This year, the threshold for Leadership Giving increased from $3,000 to $5,000, marking the first change in two decades. 1926 SOCIETY $50,000+

I donate both time and money to the Windward Fund because I know it directly benefits our children by helping support teacher training, small class structure, and financial aid to so many students, who without a Windward education, would likely fall through the cracks.

This past year, 161 faculty and staff members came together to support the Windward Fund, raising $22,714 for our students and mission. Their support reflects a shared commitment to the School and its future, with 41% of faculty and staff donors contributing for five or more years. Ryaneileen Duffy, WLS Windward Fund faculty/staff co-chair, explains why she gives: “As a teacher, I’ve had the pleasure of seeing how much our students grow both academically and emotionally. Watching each student become happy, productive, and successful once they receive the right instruction is magical. Supporting the Windward Fund helps to make this magic possible.” Tara Iodice, WMS faculty/staff co-chair, focuses on the future: “When we step up to support the Windward Fund, we send a powerful message of belief in our students and our community that directly impacts the future.” Manhattan Faculty/Staff Co-Chair Helen Prichett, a Windward Fund supporter since 2017, agrees. “It’s so important for faculty and staff to participate at any level. It’s another way we demonstrate that we’re all one team, working to provide the best education we can for our students.” Thank you to Ms. Duffy, Ms. Iodice, Ms. Prichett, and all the faculty and staff who support the mission and future of Windward through the Windward Fund.

Ten years ago, students walked onto a new campus created especially for them, a place where they could build confidence, discover their strengths, and unlock their potential. As we celebrate this milestone, we are reminded that when we invest in students and the people who teach them, the benefits extend far beyond our classrooms. Leslie Zuckerwise, MSEd, Inaugural Campus Head Manhattan Lower and Middle Schools

More than 400 members of the Windward community came together for an inspiring evening of celebration and philanthropy at this year’s Kaleidoscope Benefit. Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of our donors, we reached our fundraising goal of $1 million, an investment that will expand access to a Windward education through financial aid and strengthen the programs that define our mission. Alumni, families, faculty, and friends gathered to celebrate the strength of the Windward community and our shared commitment to students with language-based learning disabilities. The event also marked the 10th Anniversary of Windward’s Manhattan campus, a milestone that celebrated the school’s thoughtful expansion, the energy and opportunities of New York City, and the chance to reconnect with some of the earliest Manhattan students and families whose belief in Windward helped shape the campus’s success. The program featured heartfelt remarks from our honorees, each offering a unique perspective on Windward’s impact. Leslie Zuckerwise, inaugural campus head of the Manhattan Lower and Middle Schools, reflected on two decades of watching students grow into confident readers, writers, thinkers, and self-advocates. Closing the program, Windward alumnus Scott Rudin shared his journey from Windward student to Windward parent, illustrating how the School replaces uncertainty with confidence and equips students for lifelong success. His message, that confidence has the power to transform lives and unlock potential, resonated throughout the room and concluded with a standing ovation, a fitting end to an unforgettable evening.

FUNDRAISER EVENT
GRADE 8 BASKETBALL FUNDRAISER This past February, the Class of 2030 teamed up with the athletics department and alumni relations office to host the third annual Grade 8 Basketball Celebration, a spirited event that brings together school pride, teamwork, and philanthropy. Students set an ambitious goal of raising $4,000 for their class gifts and embraced the challenge with enthusiasm. As part of the effort, they designed and sold a commemorative event t-shirt, with proceeds supporting the campaign. Congratulations to Zoe Johnson of Manhattan middle school, whose design was selected as the winning entry! Their hard work paid off. Together, Grade 8 students exceeded their goal, raising an impressive $4,547. Following the event, both campuses designated the funds toward new recess equipment, creating opportunities for fun and play that will benefit students for years to come. Congratulations and thank you to the Class of 2030 for demonstrating the generosity, leadership and community spirit that makes Windward so special. James Aaronson
