t’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so we have a couple of articles about breast cancer this week. Sadly, the disease doesn’t seem to have any headway to a cure as more people get diagnosed. However, I can’t help but wonder what happened to those breakthrough drugs that were proven to have worked for the people on whom the drugs were tested. It truly is frustrating to think that there is a solution out there, but the politics of the big pharmaceuticals won’t let it see daylight. For our cover story, we discuss the disease and profile some breast cancer survivors. Read this on pages 8 through 10.

The Myths and Realities of Body Count Debunking Common Misconceptions

.MYTH 1 A HIGH BODY COUNT EQUALS PROMISCUITY

BY DORCAS AKINTOYE

Body count” is a term that frequently comes up in discussions about relationships and dating. The term “body count” refers to an individual’s total number of sexual partners. Sadly, there are a lot of myths and false beliefs about this subject, which can cause misinterpretations and harsh judgments. Let’s put the record right by dispelling six myths concerning body count.

REALITY

The number of previous sexual partners does not always indicate promiscuity. Everybody’s path is different; therefore, making assumptions based purely on a numerical value might be inaccurate. Length of the relationship and life experiences are important factors.

.MYTH 2 A LOW BODY COUNT EQUALS VIRTUE

REALITY

On the other hand, a low body count doesn’t automatically make someone more morally or virtue-oriented. Individual beliefs and boundaries must be respected since people make decisions for various reasons.

.MYTH 3 BODY COUNT DEFINES WORTH

.MYTH 5 BODY COUNT ALWAYS EQUALS RISK

REALITY

Despite the importance of sexual health, the danger isn’t just determined by the number of partners. Maintaining sexual health involves safe sexual practices, regular testing, and open communication with partners.

REALITY

It’s essential to keep self-esteem separate from the past. The number of individuals you’ve been with doesn’t define your value. In as much as your body count doesn’t determine your worth, it is essential that we try to practice self-control.

6

.MYTH JUDGING OTHERS BASED ON BODY COUNT IS ACCEPTABLE

REALITY

4

It’s unfair and cruel to judge a person solely on how many people they’ve slept with. Individual circumstances, experiences, and personal development all have an impact on each person’s decisions. Overjudging should be replaced with empathy and understanding.

.MYTH BODY COUNT PREDICTS RELATIONSHIP SUCCESS

REALITY

The number of people one has been with doesn’t necessarily correlate with the success of a relationship. Communication, trust, and compatibility are the most important factors. Instead of concentrating on the past, it is more fruitful to focus on these factors.

CONCLUSION

The subject of body count is intricate and subjective. By dispelling these widespread myths, we are reminded of the necessity of approaching discussions of it with empathy and respect. Respect, trust, communication, and mutual understanding are what really matter in any relationship. Instead of concentrating on numbers, let’s develop connections based on genuine relationships.

NAVIGATING A BREAST CANCER DIAGNOSIS

FROM SHOCK TO EMPOWERMENT BY DORCAS AKINTOYE

W

hen cells in the breast experience abnormal development and develop into a malignant tumour, breast cancer, a powerful and pervasive illness, develops. It significantly affects women’s health and well-being and is the most common cancer among women globally. Although it is much less prevalent, men can still develop breast cancer. There are different ways in which this illness might present itself, and each has specific characteristics. The most prevalent types are invasive ductal carcinoma, invasive lobular carcinoma, and ductal carcinoma in Situ (DCIS). These terms define where and how much the cancer has developed in the breast tissue. Even though the precise causes of breast cancer are not yet entirely understood, several risk factors exist. Women are at a substantially higher risk than men; hence, gender is a crucial influence. The risk of developing breast cancer increases as women age; thus, age also significantly influences. The risk is also influenced by hormonal variables, family history, and inherited genetic abnormalities (such as BRCA1 and BRCA2). For successful treatment and better results, early detection is essential. Regular breast self-exams, clinical breast exams, and mammograms are crucial tools for detecting breast cancer in its earliest stages when it is most curable. Surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, hormone therapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy are just a few of the treatment choices that have become available due to medical research advancements. These alternatives are all specifically designed for the different kinds and stages of breast cancer. An in-depth analysis of the complex world of breast cancer is presented in this article, along with advice for anyone facing this difficult journey. We examine the essential phases of this journey, from comprehending various treatment options to the critical function of support networks and the empowerment attained via self-advocacy. Breast cancer is merely a chapter in a person’s life story; it does not define them. While there are many obstacles to overcome, it is a battle that must be waged, a path that must be taken, and, in most cases, a path that leads from shock to empowerment. This article aims to educate readers on the reality of breast cancer while providing them with information and emotional support. Together, we set out on a path of understanding, optimism, and the liberation that knowledge and resiliency bring. We explore the types, causes, and symptoms of breast cancer while giving tips on how to walk through each step of dealing with a breast cancer diagnosis by providing the advice and knowledge needed.

PAGE 8

BREAST CANCER TYPES

Breast cancer, a diverse and complex disease, manifests in several distinct forms, each with unique characteristics and implications for patients. Understanding the five primary types of breast cancer is essential for both patients and healthcare professionals.

(1) DUCTAL CARCINOMA IN SITU (DCIS)

Ductal carcinoma in situ can be described as a non-invasive breast cancer. This type of cancer begins in the breast’s milk ducts, where abnormal cells are confined to the duct lining and have not invaded nearby tissues. DCIS can be detected through breast screenings or mammograms. Even though this type of cancer is non-invasive, it is crucial to treat it because there is a probability that it may progress into invasive cancer if left untreated. DCIS treatments may involve lumpectomy, mastectomy, or radiation therapy, depending on the condition of the cancer.

(2) INVASIVE DUCTAL CARCINOMA (IDC)

Invasive ductal carcinoma is one of the most common types of breast cancer, with over 80% of cases worldwide. This type of cancer starts in the milk ducts and afterwards breaks through the duct walls, spreading around the breast tissues. IDC can manifest in different ways, either as a breast lump, thickening, or distortion of the breast tissue. Early detection is vital for effective treatment, and the mode of treatment includes surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, hormone therapy, and targeted therapy. Each treatment must be tailored to the specific characteristics of the cancer.

(3) INVASIVE LOBULAR CARCINOMA (ILC)

Invasive lobular carcinoma cancer is not as common as Invasive Ductal Carcinoma, originating in the milk-producing lobules. One of the things that makes ILC unique is that it does not often come as a distinct lump. Instead, it tends to spread in a diffuse or linear pattern within the breast, making it very difficult to detect via conventional mammography. For accurate diagnosis, specialised imaging techniques like MRI may be necessary. ILC treatment options are similar to IDC, and their treatment also depends on the stage and characteristics of the cancer.

(4) INFLAMMATORY BREAST CANCER (IBC)

Inflammatory breast cancer is a rare but aggressive type of cancer. Unlike other types of cancer, IBC doesn’t produce a lump. Instead, the

breast appears red, swollen, and tender. IBC symptoms are due to the cancer cells blocking lymph vessels in the breast. By the time this kind of cancer is detected through diagnosis, they are often at an advanced stage, making early detection and specialised treatment critical. IBC treatment involves a combination of chemotherapy, radiation therapy, surgery, and targeted therapy.

(5) TRIPLE-NEGATIVE BREAST CANCER (TNBC)

Triple-negative breast cancer is a subtype characterized by the absence of three common receptors - estrogen receptors, progesterone receptors, and HER2/ neu gene amplification, making it less responsive to hormone-based therapies. TNBC is an aggressive type of cancer that may require more intensive treatments like chemotherapy. Research is still ongoing on how to develop targeted therapies for this subtype.

COVER CAUSES OF BREAST CANCER

Breast cancer, a prevalent and potentially lifethreatening disease, is influenced by various factors. Understanding these causes is pivotal for both prevention and early detection. Here, we delve into the five leading causes of breast cancer.

(1) GENETIC MUTATIONS

Genetic factors play an essential role in breast cancer. Inherited gene mutations, including BRCA1 and BRCA2, increase the risk substantially. These genes perform the function of repairing DNA damage and maintaining cell stability. The risk of developing breast cancer rises when mutations occur.

(2) HORMONAL INFLUENCES

Hormones like estrogen and progesterone have a profound impact on breast cancer risk. The risk can be elevated through prolonged exposure to these hormones, such as early mensuration, late menopause, or hormone replacement therapy. Additionally, giving birth for the first time at an older age or never having children can be associated with higher estrogen exposure.

(3) FAMILY HISTORY

A family history of breast cancer can increase an individual’s risk of developing one. Even though genetic mutations are a component, lifestyle choices and shared environmental factors can also contribute. Close relatives with a history of breast cancer increase the risk of developing the disease, especially if diagnosed young.

(4) RADIATION EXPOSURE

One of the known risk factors for breast cancer is exposure to ionizing radiation, especially during adolescence. This radiation can come from medical treatments like chest X-rays, radiation therapy, or environmental sources like nuclear fallout. The risk of developing the disease is high when the exposure occurs at a young age.

(5) LIFESTYLE AND ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS

Lifestyle choices and environmental influences can contribute to breast cancer risk. High-fat diet, excessive alcohol consumption, lack of physical activity, and obesity, among others, increase the risk of developing the disease. Environmental toxins and pollutants also play a role, even though the exact impact is still being researched.

SYMPTOMS OF BREAST CANCER

Breast cancer is a formidable adversary, but early detection can significantly improve outcomes. Recognising the signs and symptoms is crucial in catching this disease in its early stages. Here, we explore five crucial symptoms of breast cancer.

(1) BREAST LUMP

A breast lump, perhaps the most well-known symptom, is a common indicator of breast cancer. These lumps may and may not be painful, and they are always different in size. You must know that not all breast lumps are cancerous, but a healthcare professional should examine any

new lumps or masses in the breast.

(2) CHANGES IN BREAST SHAPE OR SIZE

Your breast shape or size can change due to breast cancer. This may manifest as swelling, dumpling, or puckering of the skin. You should speak out and prompt medical attention if one breast suddenly appears noticeably different from the other or if there is a persistent change in the size or shape of your breast.

(3) SKIN CHANGES

Unusual skin changes, including redness, rash-like skin, or peeling in the breast area, can indicate breast cancer. In most cases, these changes might resemble the skin of an orange (referred to as *orange peel” skin) due to the dimpling and thickening of the skin. These skin changes frequently occur with an underlying lump.

(4) NIPPLE ABNORMALITIES

(1) THE SHOCK OF DIAGNOSIS

Changes in the nipples can serve as a warning sign. Abnormalities in the nipple can come in the form of inverted nipples (when they turn inward), nipple discharge other than breast milk, and scaly or inflamed nipples, which can all be symptoms of breast cancer. Any persistent, unexplained nipple changes require medical attention.

(5) PAIN OR DISCOMFORT

Even though breast cancer is not typically associated with pain, some people may experience breast or nipple discomfort. This pain or discomfort can vary from mild to severe. It is important to know that breast pain is not the only common early symptom of breast cancer, but when it occurs in conjunction with other changes, it should be examined.

FROM SHOCK TO EMPOWERMENT

The emotional toll of receiving a breast cancer diagnosis can be tremendous; it can be a tornado of anxiety, doubt, and concerns. Many breast cancer survivors have demonstrated that this diagnosis is just the beginning of a journey that may not only be filled with hardships but also lead to personal development, empowerment, and the realisation of one’s inner fortitude. We’ll walk you through each step of dealing with a breast cancer diagnosis, providing advice, knowledge, and techniques to help you move from shock to empowerment. The stories of countless breast cancer survivors serve as inspiring proof that there is life beyond this diagnosis, and their experiences showcase the incredible resilience of the human spirit.

It’s unlikely that you will ever forget the moment you discovered you have breast cancer. Initially, feeling shocked and afraid is normal. Given your current emotional state, it could be challenging for you to comprehend the news and to think rationally. Calling on your medical team, loved ones, and friends for support at this stage is crucial.

(2) UNDERSTANDING YOUR DIAGNOSIS

After the initial shock wears off, it’s time to comprehend your diagnosis better. Understanding breast cancer’s type and stage, treatment options, and potential side effects are all part of this. Your primary resource for information will be your healthcare team. They can clarify your pathology findings and guide you in making decisions regarding your course of therapy.

(3) BUILDING A SUPPORT SYSTEM

Seeking assistance from family, friends, and professional organisations is the first step toward empowerment. Joining a support group can put you in touch with people who have gone through comparable experiences and offer invaluable emotional support and helpful guidance. Do not forget that you do not have to go through the journey alone.

(4) TREATMENT DECISIONS

Personalised care is provided for breast cancer patients. You and your medical team will decide on the best course of action based on your diagnosis and personal preferences. Aside from surgery, treatment options may include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, hormone therapy, targeted therapy, and immunotherapy. Engage in active decisionmaking about your treatment by asking questions and seeking second opinions.

Initially an OB/GYN in Atlanta, Georgia, Dr. Jackie is now better known as a reality television personality on Bravo’s popular program “Married to Medicine.” Dr. Jackie is also a two-time breast cancer survivor. Additionally, she established the 50 Shades of Pink Foundation for Breast Cancer Warriors.

(5) ELIZABETH OPUTA

Elizabeth Oputa, widely known as Elizabeth Pam, is also a breast cancer survivor. In 2011, she was diagnosed with the disease.

CONCLUSION

Knowledge is power in the fight against breast cancer. Our ability to defeat this formidable foe is strengthened by our knowledge of the types, causes, and symptoms and how to navigate a diagnosis. The stories of breast cancer survivors remind us that triumph is possible. We are unified in our fight against breast cancer through early detection, education, and support. Remember that you are not defined by your diagnosis but by your ability to navigate the path from shock to empowerment.

(5) COPING WITH SIDE EFFECTS

Various adverse effects, including exhaustion, hair loss, nausea, and mental discomfort, could occur while you receive treatment. In addition to the support groups and integrative therapies readily available to help you cope with the difficulties, your medical team will work with you to manage these side effects.

(6) EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING

Your emotional well-being may suffer if you have breast cancer. It’s critical to talk about your feelings and, if necessary, seek professional assistance. Therapists, counsellors, or support groups can offer emotional assistance to help you work through the complex feelings that frequently come with a cancer diagnosis.

(7) LIFE BEYOND BREAST CANCER

Thinking about your life after breast cancer as you move forward with treatment and recovery is crucial. Many survivors discover that the experience promotes a new appreciation for life, frequently leading to suitable lifestyle adjustments. Setting new priorities and goals, adopting healthier routines, and cherishing the important moments are a few examples of empowerment.

(8) ADVOCACY AND EDUCATION

Survivors who feel empowered are more likely to promote breast cancer education, support, and research. You can engage in policy and research projects, join fundraising activities, or share your story. A potent method to give back and have a significant impact is to be an advocate.

(9) EMBRACING YOUR STRENGTH

You’ll uncover an inner strength by dealing with a breast cancer diagnosis you might not have known you had. Resilience, tenacity, and courage will become your steadfast allies. The last step in becoming empowered is to embrace this strength, which acknowledges that you overcame a huge obstacle to become stronger.

GROOMING

Gentlemen’s Guide Bump-Free Shave For Every Skin Type BY DORCAS AKINTOYE

F

or many men, the holy grail of grooming is achieving a smooth, bump-free shave. Whether you have sensitive, oily, dry, or combo skin, getting the ideal shave might occasionally seem like an unattainable goal. But do not worry; we have collated a thorough guide with six simple guidelines for a bump-free shave suited to any skin type. A closer, more comfortable shave is here; say goodbye to razor burn and irritation.

3 SENSITIVE SKIN .

Shaving can be harsh on people with sensitive skin. Using a hypoallergenic shaving cream or gel will help you avoid irritation. To prevent friction, make sure your razor blade is sharp. Always shave in the direction of hair growth to lower the chance of ingrown hairs.

5 DRY SKIN .

1

. KNOW YOUR SKIN TYPE

Stay hydrated at all times if you have dry skin! Use a hydrating pre-shave oil or cream to soften the hairs in your beard and retain moisture. Apply a thick, alcohol-free aftershave balm to soothe and hydrate after shaving.

It’s important to know your skin type before getting into shaving techniques. The four most common types are sensitive, oily, dry, and combo skin types. Shaving for each calls for a different technique.

6

. COMBINATION SKIN

2

. PRE-SHAVE PREPARATION

A thorough preparation is the first step to a successful shave, regardless of skin type. Start by washing your face with a mild, moisturising cleanser to eliminate oil and dirt. For all skin types, this step is crucial.

It’s critical to treat different areas of skin accordingly. Apply sensitive skin techniques to the more delicate parts and oily or dry skin techniques to the appropriate areas. The secret to a bump-free shave is to customise your approach.

4 OILY SKIN .

Due to the extra sebum that can clog razor blades, shaving can be challenging for people with oily skin. To avoid additional build-up, shave using an oil-free cream or gel. To retain balance after shaving, choose a noncomedogenic moisturiser.

PAGE 12

CONCLUSION

Getting a bump-free shave takes knowledge of your particular skin type and individualised routine customisation. Keep in mind that the universal secrets to success are pre-shave preparation, appropriate products, and shaving in the direction of hair growth. These six methods can help you achieve a smoother, irritant-free shaving experience regardless of your skin type—sensitive, oily, dry, or mixed. So gear up, gentlemen, and get ready to wave goodbye to your shaving problems and hello to a smooth, bump-free look!

BEDROOM MAKEOVER

DÉCOR

Transforming Your Bedroom Space From Basic To Classic DECLUTTER YOUR BEDSIDE TABLE Your bedside table is probably cramped with items you require almost all the time, such as reading glasses, car keys, a phone charger, and other bits and bobs. Rather than just a bedside table, consider getting a bedside drawer to neatly store these items to ensure an uncluttered bedside. This way, your space feels and looks neat, and you still have your items at arm’s length.

MIRROR UPGRADE

BY IJEOMA EZEANYIKA

T

he bedroom is a sanctuary, a private space where you find solace away from the bustle and noise you encounter outside, a soothing area where you always come back to for rest in preparation for tomorrow’s activities, and so unarguably, the most used part of the home. Here are some simple pointers to give your bedroom space the glow-up it deserves.

CHOOSE SOME NEW WINDOW TREATMENT When you wake up in the morning, you stare at your curtains before opening the window. Imagine staring at ugly-looking curtains that alone could make you feel sad for the rest of the day. Tired curtains and window blinds instantly make a room look old and feel dull. Remove those old curtains, replace them with new ones, and watch your bedroom space transform from gloomy to bright and dull to lively.

If you still have the plain mirror you got years back, it is time for a change. You can replace it with either an antiqueinspired brass mirror or maybe something curvy that will open up the room or choose to take an unusual approach with a mirrored headboard or to enjoy the benefits of a floor-length mirror, or go for a model that has a mini shelf with which you gain a little storage space. When you stare at a new mirror, it feels like you are staring at a new you.

GO FOR NEW BEDDING

A SPLASH OF PAINT

The bed is the centrepiece that ties the room together. A little splurge for new bedding wouldn’t hurt you, would it? Switch out your bed linen and purchase new duvets, sheets, and bedcovers. Get them in colours and designs different from the old ones to rejuvenate the appearance of your bed space, making it feel new and refreshing. A quick advice: experts suggest you replace your mattress if it is over five years old.

From crisp white to cosy green, give your bedroom a new look. You should never underestimate the power of fresh paint during a makeover. Changing your wall colour is the easiest way to give your bedroom a new look and feel. Besides, colour also has a substantial impact on your mood.

HOW TO BECOME A MORNING PERSON BY IJEOMA EZEANYIKA

T

here are two types of individuals: night owls and early birds. Neither is inherently better than the other. However, night owls are at a disadvantage in many ways. On the flip side, being an early bird has its perks, especially in a world where the schedule of most jobs and activities seems to accommodate morning people. You should also know that being a morning or a night person depends on your internal clock — also known as the circadian rhythm — which naturally determines when you feel the most asleep and the most awake. There is no need to fidget; you can adjust your internal clock to suit your preference. So, if you yearn to use your mornings more, here are some tactics you can implement to adapt your internal clock and help yourself adjust seamlessly to morning schedules.

LIGHT EFFECT Light has a strong alerting effect. Exposure to bright light in the morning is a step in the right direction of becoming a morning person. You can go outside to feel the morning sun directly on your face, sit by a window, or purchase a light therapy lamp. Whatever you do, be sure to expose yourself to light in the morning. It will help you on your journey of becoming a morning person.

BE SURE TO HAVE A HEALTHY SLEEP LIFESTYLE Don’t jump right into adjusting your sleep pattern. First, establish healthy sleep practices like regular exercise - have a morning and evening exercise schedule, consume less than 400 milligrams of caffeine daily and avoid it at least six hours before bed or earlier, have pre-bed activities that help you relax, and make your bedroom space conducive for sleeping. When you imbibe these habits, your sleep pattern will naturally adjust.

CREATE A MORNING ROUTINE Having a bedtime routine without a morning routine to complement it is like a body without a soul. It won’t be long until you fall asleep after waking up. Fill your mornings with tasks that make you ecstatic and motivated to get out of bed.

HAVE A BEDTIME ROUTINE A bedtime routine is formed simply by repeating activities —mostly calming activities, in the same order, night after night before going to sleep. With consistency, it becomes a behavioural cue that signals to your brain that it is time to fall asleep.

EARLY MEALTIME Your appetite is intricately tied to your circadian rhythm. So, adjusting your eating schedule is adjusting your circadian rhythm. Eating breakfast during the early hours of the day helps your body adjust to an earlier routine. Rather than waiting until later before eating breakfast, try your best to see that you eat early, as it helps your internal organs become active and keep you up and running in the morning.

TECHTALK

INFUSING TECHNOLOGY FOR THE FIGHT AGAINST BREAST CANCER

BY IJEOMA EZEANYIKA

Y

ou’ve undoubtedly heard about breast cancer but probably don’t know enough about it. Breast cancer is cancer that forms in the cells of the breast. It occurs in both genders, primarily in women. Some symptoms of breast cancer include a lump in the breast, bloody discharge from the nipple, and changes in the shape or texture of the breast or nipple. Did you know there are more than one hundred thousand breast cancer cases in Nigeria annually? Don’t get scared; breast cancer isn’t a death sentence. It is even easier to fight when detected at an early stage, and technology has played a pivotal role in the early detection of breast cancer. Here are some medical technologies that aid in the early detection of breast cancer.

COMPUTER-AIDED DETECTION - CAD

These systems use sophisticated computer programs to recognise image patterns that might suggest a malignancy. If such patterns are detected, the CAD system notifies the radiologist, who can then examine the area more carefully. Several studies have indicated that CAD can improve a radiologist’s ability to detect and classify breast abnormalities on mammograms.

MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING - MRI

One outstanding usefulness of this breast cancer detection technology is that it can detect recurrent breast cancer in breasts previously subjected to lumpectomies because, unlike mammographies, MRIs are usually not limited by scarring that can occur after surgery. It can also detect tumours in women with breast implants or dense breasts, both of which can interfere with the interpretation of X-ray mammograms. It also proves helpful in screening high-risk young women who tend to have dense breasts.

DIGITAL MAMMOGRAPHY

Digital mammography is a technological improvement that can aid the detection of lesions film mammography would have missed. It also enables better detection of tumours obscured by the dense breast tissue frequently seen in younger women. It also improves screening mammography by allowing electronic storage, retrieval, and transmission of mammograms.

ULTRASOUND IMAGING

Ultrasound imaging helps to confirm whether the mass appearing on a mammogram is solid tissue or a harmless cyst containing fluid. An ultrasound imaging device emits high-frequency sound wave, which penetrates the body. When the wave bounces off the boundary between tissues in the body, it generates a distinctive echo used by a computer to generate an image known as a sonogram. Because a fluid-filled cyst has a different “sound signature” than a solid mass, radiologists can reliably use ultrasound to detect cysts commonly found in breasts. It also helps radiologists evaluate some lumps that can be felt but difficult to see on a mammogram, especially in women with dense breasts.

CONCLUSION You can help yourself fight against breast cancer by keeping a healthy lifestyle, communicating with your doctor if you are taking birth control pills to know about the risks, and breastfeeding your babies during the nursing stage.

BY BOLUWATIFE ADESINA MOVIE REVIEW:

Expend4bles

The fourth film in the Expendables franchise is a dispiriting affair, enacted by performers who collectively appear to be making a valiant effort to make the most out of a poor screenplay. The idea behind the series has always had potential — round up some beloved action stars of yesteryear and give them one more chance to ply their trade — but the expected fun has never materialised, with this latest entry lacking any sense of urgency, wit, or grace. The set pieces are bafflingly edited. The visual effects exist at an embarrassing level of incompetence. The jokey banter is never funny, and the supposed camaraderie of these soldiers of fortune never emerges in either the screenplay or the performances, both of which are handled by director Scott Waugh (Need for Speed, Act of Valor) with seemingly the bare minimum of attention. Even the talents of Iko Uwais (star of the amazing Raid: Redemption) and Tony Jaa are wasted here; in the Asian productions that made them stars, they had full reign to display their extraordinary physical gifts in hand-to-hand combat. Hollywood movies, including this one, tend to jerk the camera around and chop up the editing so much that the audience never gets to see them do what they do best. (In the case of Expend4bles, this camouflage serves to hide the fact that either of them could take on Jason Statham and the rest of the cast with one hand tied behind their backs.) The plot, which somehow required the efforts of four writers, involves Rahmat (Uwais) stealing nuclear detonators from Qaddafi’s old chemical weapons plant on behalf of a shadowy figure known as Ocelot; decades earlier, Barney (Sylvester Stallone) came close to revealing Ocelot’s identity, so he’s enthusiastic when CIA agent Marsh (Andy Garcia) sends the Expendables to Libya to stop Rahmat. They come close to accomplishing their

goal, but when Christmas (Statham) has to choose between stopping Rahmat and saving Barney’s life, he chooses the latter. This leads to a follow-up mission to stop a tanker heading toward Russian waters, bearing a nuclear device and the aforementioned warheads, with Christmas’ girlfriend Gina (Megan Fox) taking over as leader of the Expendables, while Christmas is fired by disobeying orders. Naturally, he plants a tracking device on Gina so he can tag along on the mission anyway. The fight scenes lack adrenaline and, worst of all, Expend4bles forgets one of the principal rules of action thriller staging: when Christmas and the other Expendables are sneaking around the ship during the climactic sequence, the movie loses track of who is where in relation to everyone else, and without that information, audience engagement becomes that much more difficult. Various team members — including Gunner (Dolph Lundgren), Toll Road (Randy Couture), Easy Day (Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson), and Galan (Jacob Scipio) — are supposed to have a good rapport, playfully busting each other’s chops, but none of their good-natured insults are remotely amusing or specific to what’s supposed to be their personalities. (There’s also the matter of Gunner, who spends most of the movie talking about his sobriety, taking a drink during the final fight scene; the film jokingly plays this moment like it’s Popeye getting to eat his spinach). For all its efforts at humour, Expend4bles offers precisely two kinds of laughs: unintentional (seriously, the explosion effects and green-screen moments in the Libyan compound sequence are hilarious) and unearned (the joke that lands best is a direct quote from another movie). The Expendables franchise presumably exists to demonstrate that action heroes of a certain age are not necessarily, to quote Danny Glover from Lethal Weapon, “too old for this s—t,” but these movies aren’t doing these elder icons any favours. If Stallone, Lundgren and company can pour this much effort into a script this terrible, imagine what they might do with some decent material.

WATCH OF THE WEEK

SAW X souls he wants to teach to appreciate life and smell the roses. That is if they come out of his frightening games with their noses intact — or their heads still attached. In this instalment, set between 2004’s Saw and 2005’s Saw II, John heads to Mexico to get an experimental treatment for the brain tumour killing him. It shouldn’t be brain surgery to figure out it’s a scam, but Bell sells John’s quiet desperation to believe. The sadistic, self-styled saviour of those he judges even sheds a tear here and fixes a kid’s bike; we could almost mistake John for a hero. Bell has never acted so much in a Saw movie before and, in a wispy, whispery way, clearly relishes this star-turn opportunity. The octogenarian, though fit, looks his age rather than like the stricken mid-50s

“Saw X” is “Saw 1.5” chronologically, taking place between the first and second films in the OG torture porn franchise. Qualitywise, though, it is closer to a 10 than a zero, which cannot be said about most of the other nine movies in this distressingly popular series. The squeamish won’t enjoy it, yet this first totally linear narrative in the “Saw” saga is a well-told tale with some solid characterisations and quite decent twists. ¿Téo_ - Thru My Hair Except for an early fake-out or two, Josh Stolberg and Peter Goldfinger’s script is rather slow in getting to the good stuff. But once it does, the outlandish contraptions and self-mutilating predicaments that protagonist Jigsaw Jessie Ware - Remember Where devises show some You Are diabolical genius. Sorry, did we call him Jigsaw? In Saw X, Tobin Bell, the actor who portrays both that master trap maker and his alter ego, retired civil engineer John Kramer, definitely emphasises the latter. To him, the folks his traps torment aren’t Madlib - Road Of The Lonely Ones victims but lost

John Kramer he’s portraying. But if you go to one of these movies expecting total believability, I’ve got a cure for cancer to sell you. Shawnee Smith is back as Jigsaw’s not quite demented enough apprentice, Amanda, who is learning the ropes — made from human intestines — so to speak. Norwegian actress Synnøve Macody Lund is delectably amoral as Cecilia Pederson, the quack who doesn’t care about her co-conspirators any more than she does her dying clients. The torture devices do offer their captives quite cinematic ways to die. In keeping with the movie’s theme, most have a medical component, and the coolest ones exhibit some Aztec flair — though director Kevin Greutert didn’t do all he could have with the film’s Mexico locations. In the end, Saw X looks like every other torture chamber in the franchise. Still, Greutert, who’s edited all 10 of these movies and now directed three, has an instinct for what works best and what it can mean. Though he’s driven by mortality and moral superiority, John has a moment here when he reckons with his twisted rationale. His body may still have a few months to live, but his jigsawed soul dies right there.
