MEET THECULTURE SQUAD

DAALA, ILOOSIE & OLUCHI

Culture has always guided the entertainment business, permeating everything from music to television. As entertainment and culture work together to shape trends, stories, and social standards, we have seen over time how powerfully they complement one another. Paramount Africa has established a distinct position in this everchanging landscape by promoting African culture and heritage through various television channels and multimedia offerings.

There has been a rapid expansion and development in the television hosting industry. An increasing number of people are taking the

stage and leveraging their platforms and voices to engage audiences more deeply. Leading this change is the dynamic group known as the Paramount Africa Culture Squad, which is made up of individuals committed to advancing culture in the entertainment industry. Among them are Daala, Iloosie, and Oluchi, whose journey from humble beginnings to being prestigious TV hosts exemplifies the tenacity and enthusiasm propelling the sector ahead. While Iloosie Omonhinmin, better known by his stage name Ilowitdflo, enthrals viewers on MTV Base with his charm and experience, Daala Oruwari delivers her contagious

energy and red carpet ability to BET Africa Oluchi Harrison, a well-known face on News Central TV and ONTV’s Scoop, also works for MTV Base, and she incorporates a strong passion for African culture and design into her presenting approach.

In this interview with THEWILL DOWNTOWN’s Dorcas Akintoye, Paramount Africa’s Culture Squad discuss their journey in the entertainment industry, their passion for promoting culture, and the impact they hope to make on audiences across the continent.

DAALA

What inspired you to pursue a career in television hosting and entertainment?

I’ve always been drawn to communicating and connecting with people, which led me to pursue my bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication at the University of Lagos. I always longed to be a radio presenter, and interestingly, during my university days, friends would approach me to make prank calls (while pretending to be a late-night love show host) to people they were in relationships with to see if they were loyal or not. Talk about an unconventional introduction to hosting, right? That’s how it all started for me!

However, my journey took an unexpected turn when I started accompanying my mother to her former job managing a hotel with one of the biggest entertainment events centres back then in Lagos. Witnessing the vibrant atmosphere and excitement of events ignited a passion for red carpet hosting within me; although I was a shy kid back then, this helped me discover a newfound confidence in front of the camera. Since then, I’ve been dedicated to bringing joy and entertainment to audiences through television hosting, which has become my happy place.

How has your experience as a red carpet host influenced your approach to presenting?

My extensive experience hosting red carpets and even a live TV show that ran daily for three years has significantly shaped my approach to presenting. It taught me the importance of spontaneity, quick thinking, and making guests feel comfortable in front of the camera. On the red carpet, you have to be adaptable and engaging. This positively translated into my overall presenting style, making it more dynamic and audience-focused.

I once had a situation where I was about to host the red carpet at a major award show, and about 10 minutes before the event started, I was told that it would broadcast live. Still delivering amazing show in moments like these has helped refine my presentation approach and made me more confident.

What do you hope to bring to BET Africa as a member of the Culture Squad?

Being a BET Africa Culture Squad member is a dream come true! As a Culture Squad member, I will contribute to the channel’s programming lineup and mission of showcasing the best of African culture and talent to the world. I aim to do this by bringing a vibrant mix of energy, authenticity, and a dash of spice to the screen while fostering meaningful connections with the viewers and taking them on an exciting ride of cultural exploration, highlighting untold stories through engaging content that resonates with the diverse audience. So, buckle up and join me on this wild journey as we turn up the volume on culture.

Who are some of your biggest inspirations in the entertainment industry, and why?

In my line of work, the formidable IK Osakioduwa inspires me. I adore him not only because of his humorous and unpredictable personality but also because he has mastered the art of keeping the crowd engaged and spellbound.

Another person I draw inspiration from is Burna Boy. I will forever be in awe of how a young boy from Port Harcourt (where I’m from) was able to ascend from humble beginnings and achieve international recognition, solidify his stand on the global stage, and ultimately be popularly referenced as the African

How do you see the role of television in shaping African culture and narratives? Television has always served as a powerful tool for cultural preservation. Documentaries and TV programs showcasing ceremonies, festivals, African art, culture and music ensure their continued relevance and transmission to future generations.

However, television’s impact goes beyond mere preservation; it acts as a platform for amplifying new voices and social change. Hard-hitting documentaries and thoughtprovoking dramas can spark conversation about critical issues, challenging societal norms and inspiring new movements. African music videos and youth-oriented programming can introduce new styles, social movements, and ways of thinking, shaping the narrative of what it means to be African in the 21st century.

Can you share a mantra or philosophy that guides you in both your personal and professional life?

My personal and professional philosophy is deeply rooted in my favourite saying: “Fear is faith in the wrong god.” When we let fear dictate our actions, we put all our trust in things going wrong instead of trusting in ourselves and what we can achieve.

The most profound lesson I’ve learnt is that God will never give us more than we can handle. So, I use this as a nudge to believe in the good stuff, to believe in myself, and not let fear hold me back.

ILOOSIE

How did you first become involved in broadcasting and media production? Oh, that’s a story. Back in September 2013, I was fresh out of film school, where I studied Film & Television Production, but somehow found myself on the delightful side of performance, and I dare say I was good at it. Because of this newly found love for performance, I decided to chase acting. Then season one of MTV Shuga Naija came calling, and oh boy - my audition story for this was a ride, but I’ll leave that for another day. At the audition, I met Ehiz Okoeguale, aka Ehiz Dadaboy, in person for the first time; we had an awesome, albeit short interaction. I remember when he said, “Y’all go and take over the world”. In hindsight, it was banter, but at the time and at that moment, it inspired me to pay closer attention to something that wasn’t on my radar before that —Television Hosting!

Fast-forward to June 2014, I had given up on acting because the audition hustle wasn’t for me. I had gotten a call back at every audition I went for but hadn’t booked anything major. A former lecturer, now turned my friend, Folawewo Aiyegbusi, aka FollyFlo, had sent a message to my Facebook page, which I caught very late because I was bad with social media. I reached out to her, and it turns out I had missed that audition, but a new one was happening at Obasa Road in Ikeja. I auditioned there and bagged my first official TV hosting job as a ‘Channel Ambassador’ for R2TV, and the rest, as they say, is history.

You’ve been a part of the Paramount Africa Culture Squad for a while now. What motivates you to continue evolving and innovating as a presenter on MTV Base?

There have been many motivating factors behind my MTV Base journey so far, but two major ones are the goal to “go and conquer the world” and the huge chance at global recognition with a brand like MTV Base and Paramount. People’s feedback has also been another factor. I am humbled by some of the beautiful messages I get from people who watch what I do on TV.

Real-life encounters are another. I had once taken a boat to a beach house for a friend’s birthday; when we got back, the entire community in that area swarmed us, wanting to take pictures and make videos. At first, I thought they mistook me for someone else, but the constant yelling of “Ilo MTV Base” quickly changed that notion.

Honestly, it was a surreal experience, not because of the ‘oh look, I’m popular’ factor, but because at that moment, I felt like a part of that community, and the thought that I brought them together in that way was humbling.

So, the goal and the people are why I do it and who I do it for. How do you approach the unique challenges and opportunities of hosting on a youth-centric channel?

It’s a constant learning experience. The key lies in understanding a broad demographic’s diverse needs and interests. Researching trends, engaging with social media conversations, and actively listening to young audiences is crucial for staying relevant. Developing content that is not only informative but also visually stimulating and emotionally resonant is important to capture their attention. Also, by creating opportunities for other young people like myself to create content, share their stories, and engage in dialogue, we empower them to contribute to the narrative and shape the general appeal of the channel. Ultimately, it’s about balancing entertainment and information, ensuring the content resonates while providing valuable information.

Capturing and holding their attention requires informative, visually stimulating, and emotionally resonant content. Simply lecturing at them won’t cut it. I have to create things they genuinely want to watch and engage with. By empowering other young creators like myself to share their stories and perspectives, we can build a channel

PAGE 9 THEWILL DOWNTOWN • www.thewilldowntown.com VOL 4 NO. 19 • MAY 12, 2024
COVER

that truly represents and resonates with youth culture. I see it as my role to facilitate that dialogue and give a platform to the diverse voices of my generation.

How do you see the role of music and pop culture in shaping societal norms and values?

Music and pop culture hold a powerful position in our society. Musicians can be potent social commentators, using their lyrics and performances to address critical issues like social justice, gender equality, and environmental concerns. Pop culture can explore new behaviours and perspectives through films, television shows, and social media trends. Portraying different characters and relationships can also challenge traditional norms and promote inclusivity. We see how catchy anthems mobilise movements, and popular artists can become vocal advocates for social causes. By sparking conversation and encouraging empathy, music and pop culture play a crucial role in shaping the social landscape and the values we hold dear.

What has been the most rewarding aspect of your career in broadcasting so far?

That’s a tough one. Broadcasting has given me so much regarding career milestones and personal achievements. However, the top of my list right now would be bagging the award for On-Air Personality of the Year at The Future Awards Africa last year.

Outside of your work, what are some of your passions or interests that people may not know about?

I’m extremely passionate about filmmaking, but I guess that sort of counts as my work. I’m also extremely passionate about sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ, and I’m privileged to have a radio show I do every Sunday from 6:00 am - 11:00 am on 88.5 UFM.

I’m also passionate about empowering people to thrive wherever they find themselves and achieve their goals. I do my best to support them as much as I can.

I have a major interest in the service industry because I believe we can do better as a nation with service provision. My wife and I are working on something for a certain demographic, and we’ll announce it when the time is right.

Who are some individuals or figures that have significantly impacted your career?

Oh boy, this is a long one! I’ll start at the top and go chronologically.

I already mentioned FollyFlo, then Deborah Odutayo, who gave me my first shot at broadcasting. Shola Thompson is another figure who helped build my foundation in radio, and King James Lyamghon gave me the privilege at a time when there were even more qualified people.

Then Olamide Adedeji and I built something awesome at Bounce. One of my huge mentors and big brother, Vj Adams, still guides me in my career journey. Adim Isiakpona, another huge mentor and friend who continues to guide me personally and professionally, and Fay Fay, who introduced me to the world of podcasting and gave me my first major podcast series. Not to mention, Toheeb Azeez always allowed me to create magic with Red Bull, while Solafunmi & Evi Westwick brought me into the Paramount family. My fellow team members at Paramount and MTV Base have been instrumental to my growth in the industry and, of course, my gorgeous, amazing wife and queen of my supporters’ club.

I could keep going because I’m a man made by people. Isn’t that the true testament of any great person?

My final mention goes to my Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, for I am nothing without Him.

OLUCHI

What inspired you to pursue a career in television hosting and entertainment journalism?

My career journey has been a story of childhood love. My mum recently mentioned that growing up, I would always say, “I want to be a presenter”, and when they would ask what I intended to study, I didn’t know what course it was, but I just knew I wanted to be a presenter. I then found out by the time I was in junior secondary school that I had to study Mass Communication to achieve this. This pushed me to get my Bachelor’s Degree in Mass Communication; after that, I began my journey in media, swaying through all three arms of media, inclusive of broadcast, print, PR & marketing, for close to a decade.

What do you hope to bring to MTV Base’s Culture Squad as a vibrant presenter and entertainment anchor?

I hope to bring the wealth of knowledge I have garnered throughout my career in the media, adding a little extra flavour to your screens and contributing to the channel’s legacy of being a hub for youth entertainment and culture.

What do you think is the significance of representation in the media, especially for African audiences?  Representation in media holds immense significance for African audiences. It acts as a mirror reflecting their cultures and lived experiences, building a deep sense of belonging and self-worth. This is important because the media has the power to combat negative stereotypes that have plagued the portrayals

talent and showcasing the work of musicians, filmmakers, directors and other creatives. By championing diverse voices and experiences, our understanding and connecting with young African audiences will be deeper. It’s about empowering a generation and ensuring the media reflects the richness of African stories.

Who are some individuals or figures that have inspired you in your journey as a presenter and journalist?

My journey has been a mix-and-matchtype situation. I take the good of what I like from various sources and individuals who have paved the way for journalists and broadcasters, especially amplifying the female voice.

How do you handle criticism and feedback, both professionally and personally?

I believe criticism and feedback can be tools for growth if applied correctly. No matter how odd, nice, or bad feedback is, I always learn to take out what is most necessary, important, and edifying, both professionally and personally. Life is a journey and a learning process, so every piece of information that can make that journey easier is paramount.

Beyond Wallpaper

Unconventional Wall Coverings For Unique Spaces

Walls are frequently the blank canvas that needs to be decorated when making over a room. Though there’s nothing like classic wallpaper to liven up your space, many unusual wall-covering options are available. Explore these six unconventional wall coverings to transform your area into a creative and distinctive artwork that will go beyond the norm.

(1) FABRIC WALL PANELS

Consider fabric wall panels as an alternative to traditional textiles. These panels give your home an opulent, tactile feel and are frequently adjustable. Fabric wall coverings, ranging from plush velvets to rough linens, provide a touch of grandeur and warmth, resulting in a visually and viscerally stimulating environment.

(2) WOOD VENEER FINISHES

Wood veneer coatings have a natural appeal that can elevate any part of a house. These covers provide a flexible option for various design styles, simulating the warmth of real wood. Wood veneer gives your walls a classic and elegant touch, whether you go for a clean, modern finish or a rustic, reclaimed wood appearance.

(3) CORK WALL TILES

Utilise cork wall tiles to embrace texture and sustainability. Beyond being environmentally sustainable, cork tiles give your room a distinct tactile and visual dimension. Cork is an excellent material for home and business settings because of its warmth and natural grain, creating a friendly ambience.

(4) METALLIC WALLPAPERS

Metallic wall coverings can add a touch of glitz and contemporary style. These covers include reflecting parts that play with light because they contain metallic materials like silver or gold. When it comes to adding a touch of luxury to areas like dining rooms, bedrooms, or accent walls, metallic wallpapers are a fantastic option.

(5) CHALKBOARD AND WHITEBOARD PAINT

Use a chalkboard or whiteboard paint to express your creativity. Make your walls come to life with interactive areas ideal for leaving notes, sketching, or writing. Thanks to these useful coverings, your walls can change to reflect your ideas and inspirations, which are not only practical but also unexpected.

CONCLUSION

(6) 3D WALL PANELS

Three-dimensional wall panels can add depth and interest to any room. These panels’ dramatic shadows and light play produce an aesthetically fascinating impression. A sculptural aspect added by 3D wall panels turns your walls into a work of art, regardless of your preference for geometric patterns or organic textures.

Beyond conventional wallpaper, the world of wall coverings provides a canvas for individual expression and creativity. Choosing the organic beauty of cork, the rich feel of fabric, or the interactive quality of chalkboard paint are examples of non-traditional wall décor options that may transform your walls into a reflection of your distinct style and individuality. If you have the guts to go against the grain, you can see your room become a real oasis.

Sea salts, which have calming properties, can help you achieve a good night’s sleep. A sea salt bath helps warm your entire body and lowers stress levels by supplying magnesium and other essential nutrients. As a result, the body can enter a state of relaxation and dilatation of blood vessels, and the body may get a signal to go to sleep from the drop in body temperature following the bath.

Adding bath salts to your beauty routine may enhance the experience and help your body and mind by reducing stress and providing other health advantages. Unique minerals like magnesium, calcium, and potassium found in sea salt and Epsom salt help relieve aching muscles, lessen inflammation, and improve the general condition of your skin. When used in a relaxing bath with the best natural skincare components and aromatic essential oils, these salts may enhance your mind, body, and skin. Let’s explore the advantages of taking a sea salt bath.

4. RELIEVES ACHING MUSCLES

The magnesium and sodium in a salt bath can benefit your muscles and joints greatly. In addition to relieving strain on joints, the buoyancy of the water can help lessen pain and discomfort.

3. RELIEVES DRY SKIN CONDITION

Sea salt baths can help heal disorders, including acne, psoriasis, and eczema, by lowering inflammation and restoring the skin’s pH balance. Soaking in a mineral salt bath is one of the best ways to cure itching, calm inflamed skin, and lessen dry skin. Furthermore, it has the potential to effectively manage various skin disorders by reducing inflammation and providing longerlasting comfort.

5. STIMULATES CIRCULATION

Increasing blood circulation with a sea salt bath or warm water soak can enhance general health and well-being. Enhancing blood flow has several therapeutic advantages for your body since it facilitates the delivery of essential nutrients and oxygen to all of your major organs. This may also apply to your skin, giving it a renewed, dewy sheen. It can also improve your general health and well-being by decreasing blood pressure, strengthening your immune system, supporting nerve function, and potentially lowering your chance of developing heart disease.

Taking a sea salt bath can help eliminate pollutants from the skin, encourage a natural detoxification process, and enhance the general health of the skin. Specifically sodium and potassium, the minerals in sea salt baths have a thorough cleaning effect on the skin, clearing your pores of impurities and dead skin cells to leave your complexion looking fresh and smooth.

CONCLUSION

In addition to promoting relaxation, a sea salt bath can relieve sore muscles and joints, increase circulation, and soothe sensitive skin. Soaking in a sea salt bath before bed can also improve sleep. Many different sea salt products are on the market, some of which include extra ingredients or fragrances to enhance your experience.

SETTING BOUNDARIES

The Art of Saying No A

CLARIFY PRIORITIES

Saying no at the right time protects your interests; it could be things you need to do at home, work, or for your education. Before committing yourself to an opportunity, you need to set your priorities and know if this new opportunity will interfere with what you have already set out to accomplish, especially if you are on a deadline. We all have what’s keeping us busy at different times; if what you have on your to-do list will be affected by an activity that brings no profit or has no importance, then saying no is the right thing to do.

s humans, we each have our own beliefs and values, from a personal point of view, based on cultural heritage or religious beliefs. Whatever it may be based on, we try our best to uphold those values. As we journey through life, one of the most essential skills we must develop is setting boundaries. These boundaries safeguard our well-being, values, and priorities, too. As part of creating boundaries, knowing when to say no is paramount when staying true to ourselves. This article delves into setting boundaries by saying no when necessary.

ASSERTIVE COMMUNICATION

One thing about some people is that if you show a bit of hesitation or indecisiveness, they will take advantage of it and try to pressure you more to do what they want. For this reason, one has to be assertive when saying no and do your best not to seem shy or have your voice shaking. Also note that being assertive isn’t being rude; be direct and firm, but not rude. Instead of saying, “I don’t think I can do this”, a firm way would be, “I wouldn’t be able to do this”.

OFFER ALTERNATIVES

Say you cannot perform a request at that particular time; offering alternatives could be ideal, especially if such a request is not timesensitive. You could suggest a different time frame or place or offer to support fulfilling the request in another way.

SET CLEAR LIMITS

Be clear and specific about your boundaries, and do not give room for anyone to misinterpret you in any way. Make them understand your dos and don’ts. This way, they will know what they should table before you and what not to bring up.

ACCEPT REACTIONS

When setting boundaries, not everyone will respond positively. Some people could start seeing you in a bad light, especially since they wouldn’t be able to exploit you and your emotions. Learn to accept the different reactions you will get as a result of setting boundaries; it’s inevitable.

Setting boundaries is an essential aspect of self-care and maintaining healthy relationships. Many people have issues saying no, mainly because they are scared of conflict or disappointing people, but one needs to understand that putting yourself first at times is essential.

Things You Shouldn’t Do BEFORE AND AFTER SEX

Regular intimacy has well-established benefits for both physical and emotional well-being. Sex has several benefits, such as enhancing heart health, lowering stress and anxiety, and relieving aches and pains. Unfortunately, there is a chance that many seemingly harmless behaviours before and after sexual activity might cause pain or health problems. In light of that, here are some things you might want to take into consideration before and after sex.

THINGS YOU SHOULD AVOID BEFORE SEX

AVOID SPICY FOOD

Lessen your usage of spicy sauce if you want to have sex. It might be challenging to relax after eating spicy meals like curries and peppers since they can aggravate acid reflux symptoms like heartburn and a burning feeling in the throat. Due to their lower level of digestibility, rich, fatty meals like fried chicken, citrus fruits, carbonated drinks, and caffeinated beverages can all contribute to heartburn. Thus, go easy on your stomach.

AVOID DRINKING TOO MUCH

While many have the habit of drinking right before sex because it helps to get them in the mood, excessive drinking is not advisable. An erection that is not powerful enough to carry out the deed is called erectile dysfunction (ED), and alcohol is a known risk factor for ED. While occasional excessive drinking may not always be the cause of erectile disorders, frequent heavy drinking might cause longterm issues.

DON’T SHAVE RIGHT BEFORE

There is no problem if shaving is part of your way to groom your lady bits, but you should make sure you plan ahead of time. Because of the friction during intercourse, shaving exacerbates the sensitivity, fragility, and irritation of the skin surrounding your genitalia. Shave the day before your planned intimate activity to lower your risk.

THINGS YOU SHOULD AVOID AFTER HAVING SEX

DO NOT FORGET TO USE THE BATHROOM STAY AWAY FROM WEARING TIGHT-FITTING CLOTHING POST SEX

Emptying your bladder after sex is a good idea since it helps facilitate the passage of germs from the anal region to the vaginal or urethra. Infection risk is decreased, and the area is cleaned when using the bathroom.

You should avoid wearing tightfitting lingerie or nightwear because there is generally an excess of bodily fluids and friction that spreads bacteria. Instead, it is a good idea to allow for unrestricted airflow.

CONCLUSION

AVOID USING SCENTED PRODUCTS ON YOUR GENITALS

Despite their positive effects, scented soaps, gels, washes, lotions, and other genital health products should be avoided just after intercourse since they might irritate both internal and external skin. Strongly scented soaps and products can change both good and regular bacteria. It is advised to wash the genitalia with just warm to regular water. Make sure your after-sex cleaning process is as light and easygoing as possible to prevent aggravating the vaginal area with strong smells or treatments.

Even though it is normal for lovers to make pre- and post-sex mistakes, we need to be more mindful of some behaviours that may cause discomfort or give us health problems. Some of those habits have been listed in this article, so now the ball is in your court. If you are not guilty of those habits, good for you, and if you are, it’s time for you to make a change.

MOVIE REVIEW:

The Fall Guy

Atthis year’s Academy Awards, The Fall Guy stars Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt presented a video tribute to stunt performers that included clips ranging from the silent era up through recent action juggernauts like RRR and the Fast & Furious series. It was a step forward for a group whose contributions are frequently undervalued despite, as Blunt put it, “risk[ing] life and limb” for cinema. And yet, the segment didn’t come with an award attached.

There’s a joke about the lack of Oscars for stunt people in The Fall Guy, directed by David Leitch — himself a former stuntman who doubled for Brad Pitt and Jean-Claude Van Damme before moving up into the director’s chair with John Wick in 2014.

This film is based on a TV series of the same name; although stunt performers aren’t officially recognised by the Academy, their daring frequently makes them objects of popular fascination in films and on TV. (Gosling’s already played one twice, in Drive and The Place Beyond the Pines.)

Although its roots are in the ‘80s, The Fall Guy feels very connected to contemporary Hollywood. There’s also a bit where Gosling’s character, washed-up stuntman Colt Seavers, walks onto the set of the movie that’s hopefully about to revive his career and is asked to step into a booth so his face can be scanned and used in perpetuity by AI — a key sticking point in last year’s SAG-AFTRA strike. The technology is used for evil here, of course, in a movie that preaches belowthe-line solidarity and the triumph of pluck and talent over money and ego.

Love is also a powerful force in this film. It’s what drives Colt to return to stunt work after 18 months of painful rehabilitation in the wake of a near-fatal on-set accident depicted in the opening sequence: When producer Gail (Hannah Waddington) calls Colt, now working as a valet, to persuade

him to come back to filmmaking, she tells him that the film’s director, Jody Moreno (Emily Blunt), asked for him specifically.

Colt and Jody shared a connection — expressed here, in part, in a montage of them goofing off with rubber knives and breakaway glass bottles — on a previous film. They tried to stay together after Colt’s accident, but the relationship just didn’t work out. He’s still in love with her, though. And he’ll do anything, including being set on fire and setting a new world record for barrel rolls, to get another chance with her.

The humour in The Fall Guy is silly, which consistently works; Jody’s “big break” is directing a sci-fi epic called “Metalstorm,” and Lietch and company have a lot of fun playing with the film-within-a-film’s alien costumes. And the story is very self-aware, which mostly works. At times, the movie’s nods to its own structure are charming, like a segment where Colt and Jody discuss the thematic uses of split screen over the phone. They’re in different locations but share the screen thanks to the use of a classic technique — guess which one. Others, like the meta arc of Colt and Jody discovering the power of love while shooting a film about the power of love, can tip over from clever into cheesy.

The film is so self-aware that it raises questions about which of its flaws are intentional and which are, well, flaws. The filmmaking here is as polished as one might expect from a Hollywood crowd-pleaser, well lit and only occasionally showy in terms of its camerawork. And the combat and car-crash stunts are great — they better be, given the subject matter. But there are places where the film’s VFX are puzzlingly crude compared to the professionalism of the rest of the craft: Gosling is obviously composited into a sequence where Colt skates alongside a speeding truck, for example.

At the film’s world premiere at SXSW, Gosling was very open about not doing his own stunts for The Fall Guy, a fact he presented with the self-deprecating charm that’s become his signature. And there are times when the movie coasts on Gosling’s charisma — which is fine, honestly, because he’s got enough of it to power three films like this one. And he’s not the only one with star power in this movie: Blunt rises to the occasion as both a romantic and comedic lead, and Winston Duke, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Stephanie Hsu all shine in supporting roles.

This is popcorn filmmaking at its most cheerful and enthusiastic, driven by cheeky needle drops, rousing action, and movie stars. It might not give Hollywood power players any more respect for the contributions of stunt performers and coordinators, but it does put a romantic spin on their work that will continue the public’s love affair with the profession. It also ensures that we’ll continue to see a lot of Ryan Gosling in the coming months, which is never a bad thing.

WATCH OF THE WEEK

KNUCKLES

The Sonic the Hedgehog movies were good primarily because they had Jim Carrey and made a lot of money. Hollywood, of course, has no self-control, so inevitably, there’s more. Lacking Carrey to help carry the load, Knuckles, spun out of that game-to-screen universe, isn’t just bad, but a next-level degree of bad, starting with the puzzling question of for whom this sixepisode Paramount+ series was made.

Having played the stiltedsounding warrior echidna in the 2022 Sonic sequel, Idris Elba reprises the voice of the titular animated figure in this live-action show, but that’s small compensation for the loud, tedious plot that ensues, which sends Knuckles – after a brief introduction with his movie pals – on a quest to a bowling tournament in Reno, Nevada. Why there? Because that’s the destination of Wade Whipple (Adam Pally), a supporting character from the movies whose level of cartoonish obnoxiousness, as presented here, makes children’s TV shows from the 1970s appear understated by comparison.

Adhering to his warrior creed, Knuckles brings those impulses to bear, trying to teach Wade to find his bowling version of the eye of the tiger, which is as silly as that sounds. Most of the action, meanwhile, stems from a nefarious character intent on siphoning off Knuckles’ power, with a couple of well-armed henchmen in hot pursuit.

Despite only six half-hour episodes to complete the trek from points A to B, Knuckles goes nowhere fast and doesn’t seem to be in much of a hurry to get

anywhere. Instead, the show indulges in detours that include exploring Wade’s personal life, bringing his mom (Stockard Channing) and sister (Edi Patterson) into the mix.

Charitably, the series might be seen as a sort of bonus for Sonic fans to keep the motor running while waiting for future movies. Still, it’s hard to imagine anyone on the shaving side of puberty being wowed by this iteration.

Because of Sonic’s box-office success and relationship to the popular game, Knuckles arguably serves its purpose simply in bringing attention to Paramount’s streaming service, wringing additional benefits from the franchise.

“I do not make jokes,” Knuckles tells Wade. “I make warriors.”

At least he got the first part right.
